Good deal, man. A little warm. It is a little bit warm, and we could use a little bit of moisture, too. Yeah, no doubt. I think Monday, you know Red, my buddy. I do. Yeah, he’s got his granddaughter in town. He called me yesterday, and he goes, hey, I want to get some tickets for the Rockies. Of course, the All-Star game was just awesome. done you know so they don’t start till friday and so i grabbed him some tickets for monday and there’s a 60 chance of rain monday and of all the days yeah you know that’s the way it always works well again thank you for being with us and uh it’s been a while since travis has been on and that’s been my fault totally but uh If you have not looked at air guns in a while, I highly recommend you come over to Airgun Outdoors. And I’m telling you, it is unbelievable where the air gun industry has gone to. And you were just telling me. Five years next week for the store.

Yeah, the store opened five years ago, and it’s amazing. I happened to be, during COVID, when I opened and couldn’t get products, I opened the store with eight guns. Wow. And now I believe I have about 50, 60 in stock. Yeah, I was saying, we’re surrounded. It’s a big difference from when I opened. But yeah, no, it’s been an awesome ride, and I love seeing the trajectory of it. Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER 11 :
All right, we’re going to get a few things, and I’ll go ahead and introduce. We’ve got Kyle Sobs with us. He’s a good friend of Travis’s, and we’re going to be talking about an event coming up here in the fall in Grand Junction we’ll get to. But, Kyle, thanks for being with us.

And you’re big into this as well, aren’t you?
SPEAKER 12 :
Oh, I love it. I think it’s great. You know, we’re having a lot of fun with the airgun stuff and getting out there and doing some shooting. It’s a good time.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, man, I tell you, the first time Travis took me out, I couldn’t believe it.
SPEAKER 12 :
I couldn’t either. We were just laughing when we were done. Oh, my gosh, we just had so much fun.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right. Yeah, it’s really cool. All right, let’s talk about some new things in the store. I see some things I haven’t seen before.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, definitely. We’re working on some new lines. I have probably the biggest new line is a company called Guide Outdoors. They make thermal optics, amazing products, great warranties. I’ve had so many requests to bring these products in. So I contacted them, worked with them, and it’s been a great partnership. My customers that have these optics love them. So a lot of guys are using them for coyotes and predator hunting, things like that. And they’re outstanding. So if you haven’t seen those, come check them out. I’ve got several different options in the store. And then also bringing in some of the manufacturers that I bring in of air guns have had some new models. So we have new guns. If you haven’t been in a while, come check them out. There’s actually some sales, too. So a lot of my manufacturers don’t do sales very often. And when you have new models, things like that, then sometimes I get the approval to run some sales.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah. Cool, because they need to get them out there and get them in the hands of people, right? Exactly. Yeah, for sure. So have you seen that grow a lot, too, with just new manufacturers coming on the scene every year?
SPEAKER 06 :
You know, there are some new manufacturers, and that’s actually part of… things on the docket this year to bring in some new um new companies so there there’s um as you know air gunning in europe is huge there’s a lot of manufacturers in europe so there’s a couple that i’m going to look at bringing in uh to add to what i have here um we already have some uh amazing uh manufacturers like fx day state um brk uh air force raw um western air guns so and the nice thing is is if if i can bring in quality products that are made in the us that would be my first choice but in an industry that um you see so much of it coming from you know england and sweden things like that um you know we bring in those really really high quality products um but western air guns those are that’s an american company um air force raw those are all american companies so those are brands that I love working with as well.
SPEAKER 11 :
What’s been some of the improvements, say, over the last couple of years that some of these manufacturers are coming out with?
SPEAKER 06 :
You know, I would say the biggest improvement. So when I started in air gunning like 20 years ago, there wasn’t much of a long range or even slug option. So now we’re getting into long range. It has been for several years, but it just that’s the part that that keeps growing. So, you know, we’ll go out and Kyle got to see this. We were out shooting golf balls at. Yeah, this is great. Almost 400 yards. Not every shot, obviously, but we’re within MOA at that distance. So we’re pinging a few of those. But people would think an air gun that, you know, I would say most people think 100 yards is long for an air gun. But you’ve been out with us, you know, shooting prairie dogs. It’s not, you know, that’s 100-yard prairie dogs that chip shots. Mm-hmm. But yeah, I think that’s probably where we’ve seen the most progression. Different barrels, different liners, twist rates, things like that for high ballistic coefficient slugs. So like my PRS competition gun, I’m shooting a 40 grain boat tail hollow point. And actually, there’s a couple options. So you can get the hollow points if you’re going to hunt. And then if you’re just doing competition, they have a round nose that’s going to be even a little bit slipperier. But, yeah, it’s not a problem reaching out.
SPEAKER 12 :
It’s awesome. We love it. I mean, I’m used to regular gunpowder guns. I never thought there would be a day where I’m like air guns and we stumbled on a store and it was, it was great. We had, we had so much fun and it’s the point. That’s all I do now. It’s awesome.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah. It’s a lot of fun. Once again, we are coming to you, uh, from air gun outdoors today. One, two, five, four, three, uh, again, Parker road. I’ll just say North highway. 83 is what it’ll show online. And Travis Peacock, the owners with us in Kyle Sipes also, um, Some people say, what else could you use these for? I mean, you know, you’ve got the coyotes. You’ve got, you know, some prairie dogs and stuff. But you get a lot of ranchers around and have some pesky little varmints.
SPEAKER 06 :
Exactly. And pesting, yeah. This is the season. I have tons of guys that own ranches, work on ranches that are trying to mitigate their pest problems, whether it’s prairie dogs or rats, mice, ground squirrels, things like that. And a lot of them never thought of using air guns. But it opens up the possibilities, especially I have a big group of guys that use it for pigeons. um so if you have a a barn or a dairy or a you know a ranch that’s you know you have an enclosure pigeons are going to find it and when they do they crap all over everything it’s such a mess and um these guys will go out and just clean house and then they’re amazed at hey i don’t have to go scrub all of my equipment down because it’s you know full of pigeon droppings so that one’s been really big um i do have a lot of guys that are using them for rats Um, and then, um, obviously prairie dogs and ground squirrels are, are number one. They have tons of people that are using them for that. The nice thing is, is they’re so quiet, um, and, and crazy accurate that you can, you can shoot, shoot, shoot. And it doesn’t, you know, you pull out something that, yeah, pigeon might fly from one side of the barn to the other. I mean, they’re not.
SPEAKER 11 :
Trying to get out of there.
SPEAKER 06 :
Right. And then with the prairie dogs, people don’t realize how smart prairie dogs are. And they hear a supersonic crack, and they’re gone for a while. And then they slowly start coming back up with air guns. They’re subsonic and suppressed. So it’s ridiculously quiet. And from a mitigation standpoint of rodents and pests, it’s outstanding. Right.
SPEAKER 11 :

Well, and it’s funny you mention that because I’ve had people purchase guns, and they’re like, hey, can you come out and… you know, give us a rundown and show us how they work and things like that. And let’s go sit in the pasture and take out, you know, uh, these prairie dogs. And that’s not a problem with somebody, you know, wants to buy a gun or two and, and wants, um, me to come out as long as it’s not like four hours away, but, um, I don’t mind doing stuff like that, setting up, uh, I’ve done group events where, you know, be a group of, you know, six or eight guys that are, you know, interested in checking out air guns. I’ve brought, you know, demo guns, went out, sat and shot. So if, you know, if we have that, somebody is interested in that, they can reach out to me. Right. And I’d be happy to set something up.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, cool. Scott, what do you, I mean, you’ve been into this now. It sounds pretty good. What do you like to go out and shoot?
SPEAKER 12 :
You know, I love the competition side of things. The accuracy on these guns are just unreal. You know, and one of the things that I loved most about it was, you know, just Travis. He’s involved in it, so he helps with the teaching component of it. You know, my daughter, the biggest thing I love about it, my daughter’s 12. She suffers from RA, rheumatoid arthritis. And so she loves sports, and I’m giving her a different avenue. And the competition side, we went and did a PRS match and shot against the gunpowder guns out in Albert County. She did great. She had fun. She loved it. Wow. That’s what’s cool about it. I’m giving my daughter and other youth different avenues of sport because that’s what it can be. So that’s what I enjoy most about it.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right. It is great for youth to get – I mean, it’s fun for us, okay? Right. But if you want to get your kids into something and – From the ammo side, very easy to buy, you know. Oh, sure. And, you know, less expense, you know, from traditional guns and all. But, man, I’ve seen so many times. And you see videos sometimes where people think it’s funny handing the, you know, 8-year-old a 12-gauge shotgun and kicks him down and everybody laughs, you know. but the kit and so it is a great way to get kids out too and let them really get used to handling a gun and shooting it easy and you know dealing with accuracy and stuff too yeah i love it i think it’s great she shoots an fx leopard
SPEAKER 12 :
And she has it all painted up. Oh, really? Curled out. I said, run with it. Go with it. I showed Travis. He goes, that’s great. So it’s pretty cool. Yeah, it’s neat to see her get involved in it. And, you know, when she gets back from her trip in the next week, we’re already going to schedule our next match. So I’m excited. I love it.
SPEAKER 11 :
That’ll be cool. All right, Travis, you got some.
SPEAKER 06 :
decorations on the wall here from africa yes and that’s uh you know and you know you’ve hunted africa tons of people hunt africa but um not that many with an air gun so when i told people never even thought about it to you i was like when you told me you were going to africa to hunt with that i was like are you kidding me Yeah, exactly. And so it’s been a couple of years since I was in Africa, but I have all the mounts now in the store. We took eight animals. We used a .50 caliber Air Force Texan LSS. So it’s a suppressed gun. So it was quiet, which, you know, I shot my golden wildebeest. And he ran, that whole herd ran 50 yards, turned around and was like, what was that? And then he, you know, stumbled, fell over, and that was it. 50-yard run on a, you know, with an air gun.
SPEAKER 11 :
What were your PA, your professional hunter, your guides and stuff, what did they think about that on the first animal, just to see it?
SPEAKER 06 :
They thought it was amazing. It’s, you know, they’re, you know, they’re powerful, they’re accurate. I mean, as obviously it’s not going to be like a, you know, shooting a centerfire 338 or something, but, but, you know, I always say it’s think of muzzleloader. So it’s about the same as that. And I’m shooting a 388 grain 50 caliber. It’s a 510 slug. um and it’s pretty impressive and they have a a new one out that has you know 30 to 40 percent more power than that even um that one’s not suppressed so it’s definitely louder sure um but you know it’s it’s all about accuracy one shot one kill kind of thing you don’t have to take 10 shots right right um but yeah that was amazing i uh i was supposed to go back again this year just had too many irons in the fire. So I’m going to push that back and, and go do that again. Um, I have had some customers go and they’ve absolutely loved it. Um, cause when I went and hunted there, um, actually supplied those guys with a full setup. So now, um, I just, if customers want to go, I get them, uh, connected with my guides. Uh, they hook up the trip, they go over there. They don’t have to bring anything, the air guns there, all of the accessories, um, um so they can go hunt wow yeah it’s and yeah then the hunting aspect of well you know another big thing is hogs so um i’ve hopefully this fall i have some uh um some contacts in texas to go do some hog hunting right and that’s the thing with the air guns is you have hogs come into a feeder and you’ll shoot the first hog and the other ones run 20 yards and then come back because they’re not used to that sound. The impact on the hog is louder than the shot. And then you can take multiples. Yeah, that’s cool.
SPEAKER 11 :

And… We will get to this now. I can really give him his title, Event Director. All right. Now, what kind of event is coming up in the fall?

Oh, man, we’re bringing something beautiful for 2027. It’s going to be different. It’s a four-day event. It starts in September. It’s September 23rd through the 26th. And, you know, we’re adding a new stage. You know, it follows suit with a lot of other big events in the country. But we’re going to be bringing a different flair. We have a day that we haven’t really released yet. It’s a little bit of a secret. We’re going to release it slowly. We’re bringing an event. You can tell me. I won’t tell you. I know. I know. That would break my promises with all the NDAs. It’s something neat. I’ll just say it’s animated. It’s an animated event that falls suit with some of the stuff we’ve been talking about. It’s going to be competitive. It’s going to keep people on their toes. And that’s going to be the whole event. So it’s World Airgun Championships. And… Our intent is we’re holding it at Cameo Colorado. The state of Colorado is psyched, for lack of better words. We’re talking wine venue. It’s something for everybody. A lot of events I’ve gone to for IDPA and some competition stuff, it’s meant for the competitor. Our events, stuff we’ve done for 10-plus years is bring an event that wraps around for your wife, your boyfriend, your children. You know, we’re talking with RC car sponsors and having rock crawling there. You know, something for the kids to do. We have a huge team of individuals that are working on things that benefit the Down Syndrome Foundation. So we’re going to have Nerf guns there. We’re going to teach, you know, if there’s special needs children, we’re going to have something for them to do that gives them the excitement that we feel. Um, you know, I have a couple of friends that I go to church with, um, that are all on board with this and it’s, it’s great. And they’ve worked with huge organizations. I’ve, I’ve, uh, uh, you know, a couple of our other employees work in Texas, um, and they’re on board to be able to bring on the right people because that’s what it takes, um, to be able to bring this massive of an event. So we’re excited.

I just had them on a couple of weeks ago, um, down to McCamie and we went through and God brought this complete, um,

fold out thing of the whole property of what that’s like down there yeah oh my it’s unreal it’s crazy i was out there for a qualifier with one of my good friends he’s an ro i mean he’s on our team to build this event his name is mike freon uh he’s he’s a great dude ex-military guy and and i went out there just to see you know what the event was going to be like and he wanted me to compete and i’m just going to hang out Next thing I know, I’m calling Travis. I’m walking the facility with the event staff, and I go, dude, I found our place. I found where we’re going to put on the greatest show in Aragon’s community, and we’re just jazzing. It just has not stopped the energy. We’re blessed right now, so we’re really excited.

I can’t stop talking about this to my friends that are fellow shooters. And it’s just like every time I think about it and their game, they’re like, do you want to put a concert here? And I go, yes. Yes. How many people? We have this new PRS range that they just revealed. They’re like, we can hold a 9000 person concert. And I go, let’s talk about it. I mean, it’s they got Wi-Fi at every station. I mean, it’s just it’s it’s it’s the shooter’s playground of shooters events.

Oh, yeah. No, I have thermal, night vision, standard optics. Kyle was just peeking out the window. I have an ARC and EP5 technology. 7 to 35 by 56. And if you want to reach out and touch something, that’s a great scope and it doesn’t break the bank.

Phenomenal glass. It’s unreal for the price. That’s all I have on my guns now is Arkin’s product.

yeah it’s unreal yeah there’s there’s really good options there um like i said we have all kinds of stuff in the store um we have targets we have uh you know like the thermal binoculars right when you look through those it’s amazing um you take them down and it goes into sleep mode you bring them up it sees your eyes and turns on It’s the technology and stuff is unreal. Really?

It did to us. I mean, that’s how we made it in the store is we were looking for the end of the world gun. And then next thing you know, my buddy was up from Albuquerque, you know, rifle, sorry. And it was just, we were just hooked. I think I have, what, four or five of them now? They’re beautiful. I love them. They look good.

Welcome back to Sportsman of Colorado. Ryan Resch joins us once again from Bighorn Firearms, 2175 South Jasmine. Ryan, are you catching your breath over there?
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, a little bit. Definitely been… working some later than normal nights and then uh going home getting some rest and getting right back into it so uh haven’t been getting too many breaks these days it’s just kind of uh you know one customer filling in after the next uh people trying to beat the deadline so um you know that I 100% understand that mindset and happy to facilitate anybody who chooses to try to go ahead and get one in before then. The real hobbyist, the enthusiast, I think everyone’s kind of come to grips with getting these. by the eligibility card to purchase post August one, but you know, there, that’s still a process that hasn’t been 100% hired out yet. Uh, that goes live on CPW website on Tuesday, the 20th. So we’ll kind of, I think get a better grasp of what that’s all looking like. Lots of people offering classes, uh, seeing some different, uh, varying. pricing on that stuff, you know, especially the 12-hour class. We’ve heard some crazy numbers on that.
SPEAKER 11 :
What do you kind of, I mean, if you want to share, what are you kind of hearing for four- and 12-hour classes?
SPEAKER 04 :
I’ve heard as much as like $1,000 for the 12-hour class, which just seems kind of crazy. But that’s not a class I believe we’re going to offer here. I think we’re going to really promote people getting more hunter safety. Kill two birds with one stone, you know, get eligible to hunt in Colorado and also get eligible with the four-hour class to purchase semi-automatic, detachable magazine firearms. And, you know, that four-hour class with the four-hour class, the way it’s set up, the process really, you know, after wrapping my head around it, is not going to be too much different than going and getting your concealed carry permit. So if you’ve already done that, I think you have a pretty good idea of what the overall time and money involved is going to be if you qualify for that four-hour class. The 12-hour class is in a league of its own. Yeah. There are plenty of people that are going to be offering the 12-hour class if you choose to go that route. But I really think you benefit from getting your hunter safety and doing the four-hour class. I think that’s really the way to go. And that is going to be the way that we are going to guide people to getting the eligibility card if they choose to do so, which I think is going to be a lot more popular, I think, than…
SPEAKER 11 :
most people are kind of thinking so sure and you know it may be it may be hard you know for some people to get in and get into a class you know for hunter safety just by itself here in Colorado so I did talk with Dan Coyle again Colorado Parks and Wildlife he is the firearm safety manager there that’s uh sort of heading this up i guess he was on our show and recently and you know you can’t all the other states colorado recognizes hunter safety so there are states around that you can get your hunter safety through then uh you just have to get that number that certificate or card whatever and then get that verified through CPW, and then you’re set. So just for example, you’re in Texas. You can take Texas class or Florida, and some of these are online only. I mean, you can do. And then they said you just have to get that certificate and that card to CPW here, and they will verify that, and then you’re good to go. So that may be an option for some people.
SPEAKER 04 :
yeah yeah once once you’ve proved that you’ve completed a hunter uh safety course and uh cpw verifies that then i believe uh at that point you do qualify for the four hour class so there are definitely some alternative paths to getting that uh being that it is pretty challenging to get in a uh um a class here in colorado and it is an eight hour minimum in person i believe and um and then you do have to do a shooting on the range with uh cpw as well i think they offer a part online class too right right yeah you still are required i think for like at least a half day plus the shooting uh in person so you’re right Now, once you get there, we’re going to have it all ironed out, you know, you’ve been working hard at it to simplify for your customers. Yeah. Yeah. A nice smooth path from point A to point B. And if you’ve done the concealed carry permit, this process is going to be much different than that. So, you know, don’t kind of get discouraged and think this is going to be an impossible thing to do. It’s going to be pretty simple all in all. It’s going to cost you a little bit of time and money, but once it’s done, it’s good for five years, and you can buy whatever you want. Right.
SPEAKER 11 :
And that was my next point. Once you get that card, it’s good for five years. And then after that to renew, you just have to do the four-hour, I’m assuming, right?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, I believe that’s to be accurate. They talked about that a little bit when I went through the CPW training to teach the firearm safety program curriculum.
SPEAKER 03 :
Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER 04 :
We’re hoping to be able to offer the class twice a month. We’re still kind of working out the details on that. There are some other places locally that are going to be offering them weekly. And so there’s going to be availability for the class. But if you are subscribed to the mindset of beating this deadline, we’ve got guns. We’ve got staffs. waiting ready to help you get squared away this saturday we’re going to start cutting off any special order make a background check submitted by july 28th which is not this coming tuesday but the following tuesday so this saturday will likely be the day we cut off for any special orders um unless we have uh some sort of uh agreement on we can’t get this thing in by by the time by the deadline and get submitted by the 28th if you have travel plans or anything like that that you are committed to getting uh set up with the eligibility card post august 1. so um and we will definitely assist you with that and make it uh as cost effective and um uh least time-consuming scenario that we possibly can for you. So July 28th is the last day to submit background checks, and the last day to pick up is going to be before close on the 31st. Now, there are some challenges with that, too, because per the FDD’s requirements, we are no longer able to transfer guns outside of our posted business hours. So if you come in to pick up at 4 p.m or let’s say 4 45 p.m on saturday we close at five o’clock and we’ve got a line of ten people and you know we can only get so many guns transferred in that time so right you know it is going to be a time critical thing and we’re still kind of working out a procedure to guarantee that anybody who shows up on the 31st is going to be able to leave here with that gun We don’t really want to push it to that, but I know we’re not going to have a choice because people are very eager to beat the bear market.
SPEAKER 11 :
Sure. Once again, Ryan Resch is with us. It is Big Horn Firearms. And as I mentioned just a second ago, Ryan has been working diligently since all this kind of was even first getting talked about, how to make this easy for his customers. So we’re Tuesday through Friday, 11 to 6 p.m. And Saturday from 10 to 5 p.m. We’re closed on Sunday and Monday. um we have not done any expanded business hours you know we’re a small staff everybody’s here every day open to close right now um we’re we’re doing our best to get everybody taken care of as quickly as possible and um you know there are definitely some uh outlying factors you know people have travel plans and things like that so definitely think about that before you come in and make sure if you do come in make sure you’re letting us know about those things because that that can really um have a big uh effect on whether or not you’re gonna be able to get this uh get your last purchase before august 1 out the door before the 31st so right okay so as you are hearing this

By the close of business today on Saturday, and I know we replay on Sunday, and then the following Thursday. So as you’re hearing this on Saturday, at the end of today is their cutoff for special orders, correct? yes okay all right and ryan his staff will help you hey you got a knowledgeable staff there and don’t wait don’t put this off thinking hey you know you can get this done because we’re up to you know ryan you got to wait on a lot of things here i mean and nobody knows the timing of all this of how long it’s going to take so i mean better today than waiting to monday even right right right yeah i mean that’s that’s why we’re you know

um really taking a consideration or because there’s a lot of factors there too that can dictate when that item typically arrives so i would say on on long guns we’re typically within five days and most can worry that quick or sooner But there are, you know, some instances, and there’s some sort of weather that pops up, you know, wherever stuff’s coming from. I mean, that can hold us up a day or two. And, I mean, you know, a couple of days can really be the difference right now between being taken at home before August 31st or not.

We’re going to go to the phones now, talk to a great friend of the show, and we’ll tell a little bit more at the end of this segment how we know each other, but B.J. Hartley joins us. He and his wife just returned from Alaska with one of our partners, Sportsman’s Cove Lodge, and I want to get B.J. on. Kevin Flesch and I are going to be heading there August 22nd for a few days to fish as well, so B.J., Welcome back. How are you? Doing great. Good, man. So tell us about Alaska.
SPEAKER 05 :
Well, I had never been there before. It was a very learning experience for me. We flew into Ketchikan and stayed the night. We went in an extra night, so we had some time there. The weather was perfect. Some of the things I learned on this trip before we even got to the Sportsman’s Cove was that It never freezes. It never snows in Ketchikan, Alaska.
SPEAKER 11 :
Wow. Okay.
SPEAKER 05 :
To me, that was just amazing because Alaska, you think of snow all the time.
SPEAKER 11 :
Sure.
SPEAKER 05 :
One of the other things we learned while we were there is in Ketchikan, they get between 14 and 15 feet of rain. I did not realize that. So that was great. Ketchikan was great. We worked with the resort. Ahead of time, when you register and you sign up to go out, they actually send a folder out that gives you your hotels, your airline flights. It is very, very informative. If you follow the information that they give you there, it makes for a perfect trip.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, sure. That is so cool. Just follow instructions. Sometimes us guys are not good at that, are we?
SPEAKER 05 :
Correct. Sometimes we don’t read all the fine print.
SPEAKER 11 :
Exactly. All right. So you decide to fly in a day early, give yourself a little extra time. And I will say this is what we’re doing on our trip there. We are going to be… flying out early the morning of and getting there in time to catch the plane and get there on the same day so certainly recommend if you’ve got the time to do what bj and his wife did uh because i mean catch can is a beautiful beautiful spot all right so you got there and uh and then tell us about the the plane trip or what what you did then to get over on the plane and the ferry
SPEAKER 05 :
To start off, yeah, we flew in. We flew in the day before. So we got off the plane. The airport is on an island. So from the island, you catch a ferry that takes you across. I’m not sure what the waterway is, but it takes you across there and you get off the other side. And then if you’re going into town, if your hotel’s not closed, you just call one of the local cab people and they come get you or call your hotel.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right.
SPEAKER 05 :
And they will send a shuttle out to get you. So you guys probably aren’t going to have that. The float plane company that’s out there will actually go pick you guys up at the airport and take you right to their terminal, which is right on the coast. Yes, sir. They’ll greet you. It’s great. And then you’ll get on a small float plane. I think it’s a 35, 40-minute ride from their terminal out to Sportsman’s Cove.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 05 :
Um, the weather was rainy when we were on the plane, but you could still see enough, um, of the, of the country to, to actually enjoy the float plane ride.
SPEAKER 11 :
Were you surprised how vast Alaska is?
SPEAKER 05 :
Oh my God. You don’t realize there’s that many islands that there’s that many trees. Um, the islands are so dense that you can’t even walk on them because it is a rainforest. So, um, the plane ride was great. Um, They had everything down to a T where within minutes, everything that they said was going to happen, happened.
SPEAKER 11 :
Wow, that’s awesome.
SPEAKER 05 :
I thought that was great because I was very apprehensive, have never done one of these trips before. So I was very apprehensive, and I was at ease that they took care of you, and they knew what you were going to do or not do, and they emphasized that, hey, you need to do this.
SPEAKER 11 :
right right okay so um so then you get there uh to the lodge um talk about accommodations a little bit um we stayed i think it was the eagle’s nest it’s a fairly new it’s a fairly new part of the resort they have rooms everywhere it’s really kind of a neat layout everything’s
SPEAKER 05 :
Separated by stairs and space. So we stayed in a room. I think there’s six or seven in this building, but it was fairly new.
SPEAKER 03 :
Top of the line accommodations.
SPEAKER 05 :
Everything you wanted, they had. If you didn’t have it, you wanted it, you asked them and they got it for you. Wow. So king-sized bed, nice showers. Everything’s off-grid, so it’s really amazing how they’ve adapted to… my style of life your style of life um with their adaptations they run generators to run the power i don’t know how the water works but everything is is brought in by boat right so it’s just amazing that they can they can make a five-star resort out in the middle of nowhere um but the food the food was great it was served single plate so the food was good you never went hungry um there there was never a lack of food or a lack of if you wanted food you could have it right now did you guys stay out all day yeah we went out we actually fished four days okay we’d get up in the morning five o’clock 4 30 get out and it was kind of neat because you know you always think what are they going to feed us in the boat what are they going to give us um They have a sandwich bar, so you go in there first thing in the morning, and they have all these fixings for sandwiches, and you make your own sandwiches.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 05 :
Which I thought was kind of interesting, but after you did it, it’s like you knew what you were going to have, you knew you were going to like it, and it made for a great lunch.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 05 :
So that to me was just incredible, but it was a great idea because… It wasn’t a mystery what you were going to eat.
SPEAKER 11 :
Sure, sure, yeah. And, you know, I’ve been to some different places, you know, and I’m a mayonnaise guy, and, you know, sometimes I put that on a form or something, and I get out there, and it’s mustard. You know what I mean? So, like you say, there’s no surprises.
SPEAKER 05 :
There’s no surprises. Yeah, wow.
SPEAKER 11 :
And then, yeah, talk about the dinner a little bit. Yeah.
SPEAKER 05 :
The dinners were, you know, we had meatloaf one night, which, you know, you think, okay. But it was just kind of neat that, you know, everybody got the same thing. They pretty much picked something that everybody liked.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right.
SPEAKER 05 :
Which, to me, you know, when you have 30 people in a room and you don’t have somebody complaining about the food, I never heard one complaint about food. So, to me, that’s huge.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Now, who was your captain?
SPEAKER 05 :
micah was our captain okay i met micah at the uh at our um expo this year and my hunt expo a great captain um and then and then i’m trying to remember or i’m gonna probably not remember it till the end but our deckhand him and micah they were fun together it was it was it was a fishing trip like you and me and four of our best friends went on right And they made everybody feel comfortable. My wife was with me. And there was four veterans went with us and then my wife. So it was very, very interesting to see how that came together. But they took care of my wife. I mean, they kind of catered to her a little bit more just because she’s little. And she’s a female. It was respect for the female, which you don’t see much anymore. Yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yes, sir. Yeah. And let’s hit the fishing real quick, and then I’ll circle back to a couple other things.
SPEAKER 1 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 11 :
How was the fishing?
SPEAKER 05 :
The fishing was great. The fishing was more than I expected. You know, I’m used to reeling in fish, and when you’re dropping stuff 200, 300 feet into the water, it’s a lot of work to bring up fish. I know. We caught our fair share of fish. We got enough fish. We brought it home. We caught some shrimp. They put some shrimp pots out, and then they put some crab pots out also. So we got the full gamut of everything that comes out of the water there, which was really neat. And then the boat brought in a 121-pound halibut, which was fun. It was great to watch it. It was great to see them get it in the boat because 121 pounds don’t come in the boat very easily.
SPEAKER 11 :
No. Yesterday, they just posted on their Facebook page, they had a guy with 150 pounds. And, man, if you’ve never pulled anything up, as Vijay just clearly stated, from 300 feet on the ocean floor, son, it is all the work you want, isn’t it?
SPEAKER 05 :
Oh, yeah. It’s a lot of work. And then there’s some adrenaline there, and the captain has almost as much, he’s so passionate about his job, but he has almost as much adrenaline coming in him as you do you when you’re reeling in those fish. But we caught halibut, we caught cod, we caught, oh, they’re called yellow-eyed, but they’re bright orange fish.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, I tell you, those yellow are so good to eat. Now, certain regions may have different deals, but the place we went last year, and I think even the year before, you can only catch one of those a year.
SPEAKER 05 :
Correct. That’s what it was with us. Okay.
SPEAKER 11 :
And, yeah, but that is a really good eating fish, man, I’m telling you. And they’re so cool. And once you see one, you’ll see why they call it a yellow eye because the eyes are extremely cool. I mean a bright, bright yellow.
SPEAKER 05 :
So we’d go out fishing. We’d get our limit of halibut. We got our limit of halibut every day, so halibut wasn’t a problem. Some of the other stuff we didn’t get. The salmon weren’t running, so it’s like we didn’t spend a lot of time. We tried a little bit, but not a lot of time.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 05 :
You guys could probably be closer to the time of the run. Right. But then we come back from fishing, and they pull the boat in, and they do what they call, it was kind of like a weigh-in thing. It’s like, you know, they weigh your fish, they take your pictures, and then the crew, the deckhands, all get together, and they all fillet the fish as they come in on the boat. So everything is done according to a bucket color.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right.
SPEAKER 05 :
So it was really amazing how fast our boat full of fish was cleaned, and then they… They actually shrink wrap it and put it in a box, and we brought a box of it home.
SPEAKER 11 :
