RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. — Federal authorities have charged a 38-year-old California man with a firearms offense after investigators say he twice visited President Donald Trump’s Los Angeles-area golf club, photographed security preparations and falsely claimed to be part of a State Department security detail.
Jeanine John Taele of Downey was arrested Sunday at Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles, two days before Trump arrived at the property for a Republican National Committee dinner. Authorities say Taele was carrying a magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition and had a loaded pistol in his pickup truck.

The Justice Department has not accused Taele of plotting an attack, and investigators say his motive remains unknown. A federal criminal complaint contains allegations only, and Taele is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Agents Say He Monitored Security Planning
According to a Justice Department affidavit, federal agents first noticed Taele on July 31 while conducting an advance security assessment at the Rancho Palos Verdes club. He allegedly walked across the property wearing an earpiece and took photographs and videos of agents’ security-planning activities before driving away.
Taele returned on August 2 while federal personnel were continuing their preparations. Authorities say he approached agents, claimed he worked for the State Department and said he was present for a security assignment. He also acknowledged having a loaded firearm in his vehicle.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies detained him after learning he was wanted in connection with an unrelated robbery case in El Segundo. During a pat-down, deputies allegedly found a 16-round magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition in his pocket.
A search of his truck uncovered a loaded 9mm handgun with a round chambered, another loaded magazine, binoculars and a badge reading “security protection agent,” prosecutors said.
Weapons and “Concerning” Notebooks Found
Investigators searched Taele’s Downey home on August 3 and reported finding an illegally modified AR-platform rifle, additional firearms, body armor, high-capacity magazines, bulk ammunition, an earpiece, two radio-signal devices and notebooks containing what officials described only as concerning statements.
Taele is federally charged with possessing an unregistered short-barreled rifle, an offense carrying a statutory maximum of ten years in prison. He also faces state weapons charges and the unrelated robbery allegation.
Military records cited by news organizations identify Taele as a former Marine corporal who served from 2008 to 2016, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was also previously licensed as an armed security guard in California, though his firearms permit had expired.
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, Secret Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are continuing the investigation. Officials said they had identified no credible ongoing threat to the community.
The arrest carries added weight after two attempts on Trump’s life during the 2024 campaign, including the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, and the rifle plot at his Florida golf club. That history does not establish Taele’s intent, but it explains why security personnel treated the alleged surveillance, false credentials and loaded firearm as urgent warning signs.
Law enforcement appears to have acted before uncertainty could become tragedy. The investigation must now determine why Taele was there and whether the evidence supports charges beyond the weapons offenses already filed.
