Tanner’s Tumultuous NFL Picks – Week 4

Tanner Coleman

Tanner Coleman

Tanner is a staff writer and producer. He lives in Denver and is an avid sports fan. He enjoys running, classic music, and hanging out with friends

Another 6-10 weekend because I have a very difficult time betting against teams that were good last year, and have strong rosters.

Six 0-2 teams won this week. I have a hard time believing that has happened any week in the modern era of football.

The Vikings are elite, and we never saw Sam Darnold perform like this until there is no pressure.

The Panthers finally got a win after only having two wins in the last 19 games. Andy Dalton’s experience and quarterback IQ showed that this team needed a boost. And, the “Red Rifle” delivered. I even mentioned their would-be new life injected into the Panthers and they would lose in a close game. They made the Raiders look like the worst team in the NFL.

It seems like there are more mediocre teams in the NFL right now, than clear Super Bowl contenders. Teams also seem to be more even, yet every week is great for the sportsbooks and fans.

Bo Nix looked solid, but what happened to the Buccaneers? Is it another case of they thought the game would be a cakewalk?

The Jaguars are pitiful, but Jayden Daniels looks like the best quarterback of the 2024 draft so far. He was perfect Monday night with more touchdowns than incompletions. The tear-drop pass he threw to “Scary” Terry McLaurin was beautiful to watch.

And, the Steelers are 3-0 and are two games ahead of any other AFC North team, which was the consensus best division going into the season.

Lastly, what is going on with the 49ers? I know they have a lot of injuries but giving up a two-touchdown lead is inexcusable for such a well-coached, and high-powered team.

Cowboys (-5.5) @ Giants: Thurs. 6:15p – The Cowboys should bounce back from that loss to the Ravens. They almost fueled a late comeback, but fell short. The Giants beat the Browns who look awful, and did conivingly on both sides of the ball. Malik Nabers is the real deal at wide receiver, and will continue to perform, allowing for other receivers to get open. Last year, the first matchup between these two teams resulted in a 40-0 Cowboys win. I expect the Cowboys to win with ease 35-20

HOT TAKE!

Saints @ Falcons (-2): Sun. 11:00a – The Falcons being favored in this game is a little surprising. The Saints lost in a very boring game to the Eagles 15-12. The Saints most likely could’ve won the game if Saquon Barkley didn’t explode for two 4th quarter touchdowns. The Falcons look good despite the 1-2 record. They have only played teams playing over .500 football. They came close to beating the defining champs, the Chiefs.

Falcons win 21-20

Rams @ Bears (-2.5): Sun. 11:00a – The Bears were terrible in their game against the Colts, other than their one touchdown drive. The Rams have a lot of injuries, but it seems like most teams do. I think the Rams are coached a lot better, they also have a quarterback that has been elite since 2010. Rams win 27-17

Vikings @ Packers (-2.5): Sun. 11:00a – The Packers have been great without Jordan Love. Malik Willis in as the back-up, has proved the whole NFL wrong. He was essentially a castaway, but put on a show against his former team (the Titans). The Vikings are the shock undefeated team, and it feels like at some point this will have to end. There are always shock undefeated teams, but the streak usually ends by Week 6. If Jordan Love is cleared to play my prediction may change but, I am taking the Vikings for at least one more week, 24-20

Steelers (-2) @ Colts: Sun. 11:00a – The Steelers defense wins them games. Justin Fields has done a great job of not turning the ball over, and scoring when they do get into the redzone. The Colts have been a letdown. They beat the Bears barely, in a very back and forth snooze fest of turnovers and punts. Steelers win 21-14

Broncos @ Jets (-7): Sun. 11:00a – The Broncos had a surprising, yet impressive win over the Buccaneers. The Buccaneers were looking like one of the best teams until only scoring the one touchdown. The Broncos’ defense played well and Bo was able to find receivers better than he did in the first two games. The Broncos’ loss to the Steelers, was a one score game mostly and both defenses played well. The Jets had a commanding win over the Patriots. I think Jets still win 24-14

Eagles (-2.5) @ Buccaneers: Sun. 11:00a – The Eagles proved they are still a solid team. They held the Saints to 12 points and were able to win the game. The Saints were the talk of the NFL, until last week. Saquon Barkley has proven that once on a good team, with a good O-line, he is a top three running back in the league. The Bucs had a terrible home loss against the Broncos. I think most people were shocked that an 2-0 team would get blown out by a young 0-2 team. I think Eagles get revenge for their Wild Card playoff loss to the Bucs last year 28-21

Bengals (-4.5) @ Panthers: Sun. 11:00a – The Bengals are the shock 0-3 team. They should have won their first game against the Patriots. They barely lost to the Chiefs on a pass interference call. And, Monday night their defense couldn’t get off the field as the offense scored 33 points. The Panthers are a revitalized team that seems to be able to beat any team on their off days. Andy Dalton’s prowess and experie3nce serves the Panthers well, but you got to feel sorry for Bryce Young. He hasn’t even played 20 NFL games and as a #1 overall pick he is got pulled. FYI that is way before Jamarcus Russell ever got benched. Bengals win 28-24

Jaguars @ Texans (-6.5): Sun. 11:00a – The Jaguars look abysmal, and the Texans lost to the red-hot Vikings. With a clear head, it is pretty much impossible to take the Jags in this matchup. I will take the Texans to cover and win 28-13

Commanders @ Cardinals (-3): Sun. 2:05p – The Commanders are 2-1 and I don’t think anyone saw that coming. The Cardinals are 1-2 but both losses were in one score games. I like both teams a lot, especially because their rosters aren’t littered with big names and stars. I think Jayden Daniels is the man and looks ten times better than Caleb Williams with half if not a third of the weapons. Commanders win 24-23

Patriots @ 49ers (-10): Sun. 2:05p – The 49ers better win this game, or their season may end in them being a wild card team at best. Obviously, some of their top players are out like Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffery. There defense is also banged up, but the 49ers sole win was against the Jets who just beat the Patriots by 20. The 49ers should win this game. The niners to cover is a different story. 10 points is a huge spread, for a depleted squad. 49ers win 24-17

Browns @ Raiders (-2): Sun. 2:25p – The Browns have been a huge disappointment. If, Deshuan Watson was even half as good as he was in Houston, the Browns would look like a playoff team. Losing to the now 1-2 Cowboys wasn’t the worse result for the browns. Last week they lost to the Giants. And, the Giants are nothing special other than Malik Nabers, and a few key defensive players (Brian Burns, Dexter Lawerence). The Raiders had the most embarrassing loss because the “Red Rifle” went nuclear with 300+ passing yards and three touchdowns. The Raiders coach, Antonio Pierce, claimed players need to be responsible for the loss against Carolina. Both dysfunctional teams make it tough to pick, but I am going to take the Browns 21-17

Chiefs (-7.5) @ Chargers: Sun. 2:25p – I doubt Justin Herbert will play, and Taylor Heinicke won’t be able to deal with the lack of Chargers receivers nor the Chiefs pass rush. The Chiefs are a juggernaut even without Isiaih Pacheco and Marquise Brown (who hasn’t played yet).

Their O-line is one of, if not, the best in the world. Any running back they put back there will be able to run the ball somewhat efficiently. Also, Chargers star safety, Derwin James, may be out for the game as well due to a suspension. Chiefs win 27-17

Bills @ Ravens (-2.5): Sun. 6:20p – The Bills are a joy to watch. Their young defense looked fantastic against the struggling Jaguars. Josh Allen doesn’t need Steffon Diggs. He has a plethora of receivers, tight ends, and running backs to toss the pigskin to. James Cook looks like a Pro Bowl running back, and the offensive line lost a few pieces, Mitch Morse for example, and still seems to give Allen enough time to find receivers. The Ravens had an impressive win against the Cowboys, but I still think the Ravens need another receiver. Zay Flowers and their two tight ends is basically the only help Lamar has. Bills take it 27-21

Titans @ Dolphins (-1): Mon. 5:30p – The Titans are that team, mostly because of Will Levis, that plays well and then fumbles the game with one erred play. Will Levis has already created a highlight reel of terrible decisions. Throwing the ball under hand or while falling down is always going to be problematic, especially with a young quarterback. The Dolphins are a complete shell of themselves with Skylar Thompson at quarterback. This team was poised for a playoff run, but with Tua going down, their offense can’t move the ball. You would think with all of that speed you and I could move the ball down the field. The Dolphins should have never let go of Mike White. I believe he is now on the Bills practice squad, but what he did with the Jets was strong enough for a backup quarterback. He would actually give the Dolphins a chance to win games. Titans win 21-14

Seahawks @ Lions (-3.5): Mon. 6:15p – The Seahawks are 3-0, but haven’t played any top teams. The Lions lost to the Buccaneers, but bounced back against the Cardinals. The Lions don’t feel as explosive as last year. Sam LaPorta doesn’t even have 100 receiving yards yet and the team hasn’t scored more than 20 points in regulation this year. I think the Lions win but don’t cover 27-25
