(Worthy News) – Continuing to raise the long-standing alarm that Iran is close to developing a nuclear bomb, the UN’s nuclear watchdog chief has announced that the Iranian regime is “pressing the gas pedal” on its enrichment of uranium to near weapons grade, Reuters reports.

In a statement Wednesday, Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said Iran’s announcement last month that it “dramatically” increased enrichment of uranium to up to 60% purity, closer to the roughly 90% needed for an atomic bomb, is beginning to take effect.

“Before it was (producing) more or less seven kilograms (of uranium enriched to up to 60%) per month, now it’s above 30 or more than that. So I think this is a clear indication of an acceleration. They are pressing the gas pedal,” Grossi told reporters at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Noting that Iran would still need time to install extra centrifuges for the accelerated production of uranium, Grossi nevertheless said: “We are going to start seeing steady increases from now.”

While Iran has always insisted its nuclear program is for civil domestic usage, Western powers, including the US and Israel, believe Tehran is aiming to build a bomb that could be used against them or their allies.
