Trump’s Disruption Exposes Tensions Inside Big Tech’s Conservative Wing
By Travis Pander
Two months into President Trump’s second term, some surprising voices are beginning to squirm — and not from the usual corners of the liberal elite. This time, it’s Silicon Valley’s so-called “conservative” wing, and their complaints say more about them than they do about Trump.
Executives who once applauded Trump’s pro-business promises are now frustrated by his unapologetic “America First” agenda. But perhaps it’s time they realized: true conservatism doesn’t play by globalist rules.
“None of my friends who voted for Trump are happy right now. Everyone is annoyed.”
– Reggie James, tech founder
What exactly has these elites rattled? Tariffs on Chinese goods. Layoffs in bloated government agencies. And the kind of market recalibrations that come when you stop propping up artificial tech bubbles. Trump’s refusal to cater to Silicon Valley’s crypto schemes and venture capitalist pet projects has them crying foul — even as Main Street breathes easier.
The Crypto Distraction
Tech insiders are particularly grumbling over Trump’s embrace of cryptocurrency — or at least his willingness to give it a fair shot. From the launch of the $Trump coin to the appointment of a “crypto czar,” the administration is exploring digital assets with an America-first mindset.
But critics, even some on the right, claim that some opportunists have used proximity to Trump for personal gain. Whether or not that’s true, one thing is certain: the tech world’s hands aren’t exactly clean. From FTX to pump-and-dump memecoins, Silicon Valley has done plenty of damage on its own.
“It’s wrong to steal my money for grift on the left; it’s also wrong to tax me for crypto bro schemes.”
– Joe Lonsdale, Palantir cofounder
The Bigger Picture
Some defense tech companies, like Anduril and Palantir, are experiencing cuts in military spending and now feel the heat. But others remain confident this is just strategic pruning. The long-term mission remains: rebuild American strength from within.
Even Jeff Bezos seems to be pivoting. While some interpreted The Washington Post’s sudden shift toward “free markets” as an olive branch to Trump, others see it as a coded rebuke of his tariffs. Either way, Bezos — like many billionaires — is discovering that Trump governs for the people, not the portfolios.
“Trump is kicking the shit out of America’s billionaires.”
– Noah Smith, economist
Trump was never elected to protect Silicon Valley’s profit margins. He was elected to protect American workers, American sovereignty, and American values. And if that puts him at odds with tech elites who want a globalist playing field, so be it.
