(Worthy News) – Iran’s parliament on Wednesday ratified a sweeping 20-year strategic partnership with Russia, signaling a significant deepening of ties between the two heavily sanctioned nations.

The long-term agreement, which was originally signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on January 17, had already passed Russia’s legislative process in April. The newly approved pact encompasses closer military coordination, joint defense measures, and enhanced economic cooperation.

Though the agreement stops short of a mutual defense clause, it commits both nations to respond to common military threats, advance military-technical collaboration, and engage in joint military exercises — moves that underscore a strategic realignment amid shared tensions with the West.

Military ties between Tehran and Moscow have steadily grown since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Western governments accuse Iran of supplying drones and missiles for use in Russian attacks, an allegation Iran continues to deny.

On the economic front, the partnership includes provisions for bolstering direct interbank transactions and promoting domestic financial systems as alternatives to Western-controlled mechanisms. Last week, a free trade agreement between Iran and the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union also came into force, significantly reducing tariffs and aiming to boost trade across sectors.
