(Worthy News) – Russian President Vladimir Putin told President Donald Trump on Wednesday that Moscow will retaliate for Ukraine’s surprise drone strike deep inside Russian territory, while also offering to assist U.S. efforts to bring Iran to the negotiating table over its nuclear ambitions.
The two leaders spoke for more than an hour by phone, a call Trump described on Truth Social as “a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace.”
Sunday’s drone attack, which Ukraine claims severely damaged nearly one-third of Russia’s strategic bomber fleet—including nuclear-capable aircraft—has inflamed tensions across the region. The assault reportedly involved drones that had been covertly smuggled into Russia in containers over several months, reaching as far as Siberia.
“President Putin did say, and very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attack on the airfields,” Trump wrote. The statement raises concerns of further escalation just days after failed peace talks in Istanbul.
Ukraine and Russia have been locked in a grinding war for more than three years with little territorial change in recent months. The conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives, and both sides emerged from the most recent negotiations with no concrete agreement. U.S. Vice President JD Vance recently stated that the U.S. may need to “walk away” if neither Moscow nor Kyiv shows real intent to end the war.
Beyond Ukraine, the Trump-Putin call also touched on the faltering U.S.-Iran nuclear negotiations. “Time is running out on Iran’s decision pertaining to nuclear weapons,” Trump wrote. “I stated to President Putin that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon and, on this, I believe that we were in agreement.”
Putin reportedly offered to help facilitate talks with Tehran, telling Trump he could “perhaps be helpful in getting this brought to a rapid conclusion.”
Russia has drawn closer to Iran since the start of the Ukraine war, with the two nations exchanging military hardware and intelligence. In 2024, Iran sent ballistic missiles to Russia for use against Ukrainian forces, reportedly in exchange for advanced Russian fighter jets.
While some reports on Monday suggested the Trump administration might allow limited uranium enrichment in a new nuclear deal with Iran, Trump forcefully denied the claim, reaffirming his position of “no enrichment.”
Iran responded Wednesday by rejecting the reported U.S. proposal altogether and vowing to continue enrichment activities for its nuclear program.
As diplomatic fronts falter and new threats emerge, Wednesday’s call underscored both the urgency and complexity of the global flashpoints facing the Trump administration.
