(Worthy News) – Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers during a closed briefing Monday that recent White House rhetoric about Greenland does not signal an imminent U.S. invasion, emphasizing instead that the administration’s preferred goal is to purchase the island from Denmark, according to people familiar with the discussion.
Rubio’s remarks came amid increasingly forceful public statements from Donald Trump and senior officials, who have declined to rule out military options. The president has repeatedly said that acquiring Greenland is a U.S. national security priority tied to countering Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic and securing access to critical minerals.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration is considering “a range of options,” adding that use of the U.S. military “is always an option” for the commander in chief. Still, U.S. and European officials say there are no signs of preparations for a military invasion of the island, which is a self-governing territory of Denmark.
Rubio addressed the issue after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer asked whether the administration planned to use force in places such as Mexico or Greenland. According to those briefed, Rubio played down the likelihood of military action and stressed negotiations as the primary path forward.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, a close Trump ally, echoed that view, saying the administration’s approach “is all about negotiations” and legal control needed to expand U.S. activity on the island.
European leaders have warned that any U.S. attack on Greenland would threaten the future of NATO. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said such a move would cause the alliance and the broader international order to collapse. Meanwhile, Trump dismissed Denmark’s recent security investments on the island as insufficient.
Trump has revived interest in acquiring Greenland since his first term, but recent comments have heightened concern across Europe. Presidential adviser Stephen Miller said Monday that no country would militarily oppose the U.S. over Greenland’s future, underscoring the administration’s confidence as diplomatic tensions continue to rise.
