SPEAKER 06 :
It’s finally Friday on Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush. So I tell him I’m a pro jack. And who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama himself. So we finish 18, and he’s going to sniff me. And I say, hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know? And he says, oh, it won’t be any money. When you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness. So I got that going. And movie reviews with Andy Payne.
SPEAKER 10 :
I think you got the wrong impression about me. I think in all fairness, I should explain to you exactly what it is that I do.
SPEAKER 11 :
What I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.
SPEAKER 09 :
What do you want to do tonight?
SPEAKER 06 :
The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world. Stick a fork in me, Jerry. I’m done. Now, here is your host of Rush to Reason, John Rush.
SPEAKER 05 :
John Rush.
SPEAKER 03 :
All right, we are ready. Friday edition, Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Myself, Andy Pate, Charlie Grimes, of course, our engineer. How’s Andy this fine Friday? I’m doing very well, sir, and yourself? Very good. Heading into the weekend. What’s wrong with that? Oh, nothing. We’ll take it. Nothing. Bruce Simmons joining us as well, our reverse mortgage professor. Bruce, how are you, sir?
SPEAKER 05 :
I’m fantastic. Happy Friday the 13th. Ready for Christmas, Bruce? I’m never ready for Christmas. I love it, but I’m never ready for it.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, I think you, well, this year, especially as short as it is between the two holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas, you’re not the only one.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, yeah. It’ll be fun, though. Lots of family and friends, so it’s always good.
SPEAKER 03 :
Speaking of family and friends, a lot of people this time of the year to where, you know, as we all age and different conversations come up and so on, and this is something that, you know, I wanted you to address, whereby… It’s not always mom, dad, grandma, grandpa that thinks about the reverse mortgage. Sometimes as a family, you can start down that path and start asking some of those conversations and so on. And I guess the question I would have for you is if somebody’s around the dinner table and you kind of get to where that topic might be able to be broached, how do you start down that path? that’s a good question um as far as like the family member mentioning yeah in other words hey you know i hear this guy on the radio all the time he’s on john’s show uh he talks about reverse mortgages you know hey mom dad is that something that you know we maybe ought to you know address a little bit or have a conversation over i guess it would depend on on what you know about their finances to begin with if
SPEAKER 05 :
If you know that things are maybe a little tight, or maybe they’re concerned about long-term care, for example. They own their home free and clear. Okay. Money’s not an issue, but they don’t have long-term care insurance. Okay. That would be a very good point.
SPEAKER 03 :
And typically, Bruce, I mean, maybe not every kid knows that, but… For the most part, I think a lot of kids, siblings and so on would kind of know, you know, where’s mom and dad at? I mean, those conversations typically happen. I know they happen among siblings. You have those conversations just to say, hey, you know, we got to make sure that everything’s all, you know, dialed in with mom and dad as we kind of head down this road. We know that, you know, they’re not spring chickens anymore and not that we’re trying to put anybody, you know, in a home or in the grave early. But these are conversations that families start having. And I’ve got to believe that you could be a part of that.
SPEAKER 05 :
I think that, and I do meet with a lot of families, adult children or even grandchildren, attorneys, financial advisors, but I think that the way I would approach it is trying to explain to your parents that it’s not the devil. Right. You know, I hear this guy on the radio, and reverse mortgages have gone through some changes recently, and I think a lot of financial advisors are starting to realize the value of them if properly used. Have you guys ever considered something like that? Oh, no, we don’t need it. We don’t need it. Well, maybe we could take a look at it just to see if it’s possible, if it makes sense. Are you open to gathering information? Something like that, because the way I’ve run into more often than not is adult children are interested in the reverse mortgage, and the parents are like, well, I don’t want to Give the house to my bank. I want to give the bank my house. I want to give it to you guys. Make sure you have it. And they just don’t understand it. And the kids need to explain, look, Mom, I don’t want your house. I want you to be happy. There you go.
SPEAKER 03 :
And by the way, at the end, depending on how things work out, the bank’s not necessarily going to have it anyways because we have options. Let’s talk about those.
SPEAKER 05 :
Exactly. That’s one of the misconceptions that I’ve been battling for 21 years, almost 22 years about reverse mortgages. The bank’s going to take your house. No, no, they’re not.
SPEAKER 07 :
Bruce, so what’s your experience usually in these meetings? Do people usually come in a little tense and leave very relaxed?
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, it depends on how open they are to it. Some people, I have had some where it was very tense. They’re almost If one spouse is against it and one spouse is for it, that can create some tension because I’ve run into that a number of times. And if the spouse that’s against it is willing to listen, a lot of times they’ll leave, okay, that gives us something to think about. And not that they’re going to sign on the dotted line, and I never ask people to do that, but open up. the conversation. Let’s talk about it. And what happens is maybe six months, a year, two years later, I’m talking to them about more details. Okay, let’s take a closer look at this now.
SPEAKER 03 :
Gotcha. Yeah. Yeah. And my point is, you know, a lot of people will gather around families and so on. And again, some of these conversations will just sort of naturally occurring, you know, occur depending upon you know, what you’re doing and what you’re watching and so on. You know how that is, Bruce. Some things just spur a long conversation. And my thought was, hey, let’s put a plug in for you because you’re able to then, you know, after the holidays, sit down, have a conversation, and really get down to the brass tacks of is this a good fit or not.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, especially if you hear them say, oh, yeah, it would be nice to go visit – Johnny and Sally and their new great-grandbaby, you know, in California, but we can’t afford it right now. We just can’t afford it.
SPEAKER 03 :
That’s right. Hey, the other one that might come up around the dinner table this time of the year for everyone is going to be, hey, property taxes are like at an all-time high. Mom, Dad, how are you going to handle that next April?
SPEAKER 05 :
Insurance as well, too, both. All property charges are just going through the roof. My insurance went up $900 this year. And taxes are crazy, too. So, yeah, that’s inflation. That’s a great point, John.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah. So my point is, as you’re around the table this year and some of those conversations might come up to sort of, you know, ease the pain, I guess you could say, Bruce, or, you know, put a little bit of ease into the room. You know, hey, all of you listening have that conversation. You know, there’s never a guarantee, but at least have that conversation. Say, hey, mom, dad, there may be an answer for this and it may be a lot closer to us than you think. You know, let’s go ahead and call John’s guy and have a conversation and see how it goes.
SPEAKER 05 :
That’s great advice. I think that’s an excellent idea.
SPEAKER 03 :
Okay. How do they do that, Bruce? How do they get a hold of you?
SPEAKER 05 :
Give me a call at 303-467-7821. 303-467-7821. Or you can go to my website or KLZ’s website as well.
SPEAKER 03 :
KLZradio.com or our website, RushToReason.com as well. Bruce, again, I probably won’t see you before Christmas. Merry Christmas to you and your family, and we appreciate all you do, sir.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, Merry Christmas to both of you guys. Keep up the good work. We’ll do it. And fight the good fight.
SPEAKER 03 :
We’ll do it. Thank you, Bruce, very much. We appreciate it. And yeah, for a lot of you listening, those conversations could easily come up. And we have, you know, Bruce could very well have a solution for you. And you don’t know until you have that conversation. And ultimately, Andy, a lot of people, I think, get afraid of them because they’ve heard so many bad things that really they should stop and just have a conversation to find out.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, they feel they’re risking their home right now.
SPEAKER 03 :
It’s not that way. Right. All right. Hi-Fi Plumbing is next. Hi-Fi Plumbing and Electrical, by the way. SPEAKER 16 :
Suck it up, buttercup. Back to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 07 :
And welcome back to Rush to Reason. Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560, John Rush, together with Andy Pate and John. Are you ready for a movie?
SPEAKER 03 :
Which one are we doing first? I didn’t ask you that earlier. I apologize.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, let me lead into it. How’s this sound?
SPEAKER 03 :
Let’s do that.
SPEAKER 07 :
Like Venom and Morbius, another Spider-Man villain becomes a hero in Kraven the Hunter.
SPEAKER 09 :
I stared death in the face and for the first time I saw my true self. My son, they are prey. We are predators.
SPEAKER 08 :
Why do you hunt?
SPEAKER 09 :
My father puts evil into the world. I take it out. is about strength. Tell me about this hunter. Once you’re on his list, there’s only one way off. Who’s next?
SPEAKER 06 :
Embrace who you really are, son.
SPEAKER 08 :
And you will become that weapon.
SPEAKER 09 :
You are exactly like our father. Just another man hunting for a trophy. There is an animal in each one of us.
SPEAKER 06 :
Don’t you want to know why they call me the Rhine?
SPEAKER 07 :
All right. That was actually The Rhino. Don’t you want to know why they call me The Rhino? He was kind of trailing off there, wasn’t he? Well, what do you think, John? Kraven the Hunter.
SPEAKER 03 :
Got some good actors in it.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, it’s another Marvel movie. Actually, it has a heck of a cast.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, I see that. Well, let’s jump in.
SPEAKER 07 :
Aaron Taylor Johnson, he stars as Sergei Kravenov, the muscular hunter known as Kraven the Hunter. In the Spider-Man cartoon world, which, as you know, I’m very much into, I watch Spider-Man cartoons, I watch all the cartoons, have for many years. Well, in that world, Kraven was given great power through a serum from his scientist girlfriend, um… Yeah, scientist girlfriend. That’s really what she is. And her name is Calypso. And as a big game hunter, you see, he goes out and hunts animals. As a big game hunter, he hears about Spider-Man, and he wants to hunt the most dangerous game of all. Therefore, he becomes an enemy to Spider-Man. And that’s the story of Kraven the Hunter. But, hey, let’s throw that all out and make this movie instead. What do you think?
SPEAKER 03 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
This has nothing to do with that. Unreal. They just threw all of that out to make this movie. Here we go. Here, a young Sergei is given a magical potion, not scientific, magical potion from Calypso. And rather than being a scientist, she comes from a line of mystic priestesses.
SPEAKER 08 :
Hmm.
SPEAKER 07 :
And she later becomes a lawyer, which I guess is similar to being a mystic priestess in a lot of ways. I don’t know. As a teenager, Sergei is on a safari with his father, Nikolai, played by the great Russell Crowe. Right? We were saying great cast here. And his brother, Dmitry. Dad is a Russian gangster, by the way. So he’s a bad guy. I gathered that. Yeah. Anyhow, there’s an accent. And he does a great job with the accent, just so you know.
SPEAKER 08 :
Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER 07 :
Anyhow, there’s an accident with a CGI lion attack, and one thing leads to another, and Sergei gets Calypso’s potion. Well, now Sergei has great powers like speed, leaping ability, night vision, and even relating to animals. As such, he becomes a great anti-poacher, a vigilante defending the animal kingdom. Kind of, John, he’s kind of the punisher for our furry friends. So who does Kraven hunt? Bad guys! He hunts those poachers. He hunts the criminal. Maybe he hunts fishermen who catch over their limit. I’m not really sure. But whatever you do, don’t mess with the animals around this guy. Well, Craven becomes the scourge of the criminal underworld, as they call him the hunter. But he tries to leave his father alone. Anyway, he’s too much for the bad guys until one becomes a badder guy, and that’s the rhino. No, he’s not a Republican in name only, though it would have been fun to see Craven face off against Liz Cheney. What do you think?
SPEAKER 03 :
Good point.
SPEAKER 07 :
That would have been good. Action, action, action. I’d love it. Well, the rhino, he becomes huge, incredibly powerful with impervious skin and a horn. And this sets up a big battle. And ultimately, Kraven must stop evil and rescue basically all of nature and stop bad guys everywhere. And that is Kraven the Hunter. What do you think?
SPEAKER 03 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
Hard to tell, right?
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, okay. You tell me.
SPEAKER 07 :
What works in Craven the Hunter? Well, first of all, Aaron Taylor Johnson is really ripped. The guy is really, you know, he’s gone all Wolverine. He’s got the muscles. He’s ready to go. And the family development with Russell Crowe and the two sons is interesting. It’s very interesting watching the two because he is a very active son, and his brother is actually a very quiet son. piano playing son. And so watching that kind of a dynamic and then of course you just have such great acting going on. That’s very interesting. Next there are some good action sequences. And Kraven, he moves like a lion. Because This potion basically combined lion skills with the magic of the potion with him, and that’s why he has what he can do. And, of course, they make it so you have the CGI of him moving like a lion. That’s interesting. What else works in Kraven the Hunter? Nothing. John? Nothing. That was it.
SPEAKER 03 :
That bad, huh?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, that was it. Sorry, Charlie.
SPEAKER 03 :
Just one of the star-studded cast.
SPEAKER 07 :
I should have had Charlie queue up crickets for this. I didn’t get to it. Yeah. Well, we’ll get to that in a moment. What doesn’t work in Craving the Hunter? Well, first of all, you’ve got some laughable CGI at points. I thought the line was pretty good early on, but that was about it. I thought Kraven was fighting the logo from Rhino Watch at one point. It was just like crazy. Go Kraven, right? There was virtually no humor. This is like the anti-Deadpool. I mean, come on, man. It’s a Marvel movie.
SPEAKER 03 :
It didn’t sound like there was much…
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, and just so you know, this is made by the Sony line of the Marvel movies, and I think this is going to be the last one. It kind of looks like this will be the last one. Real low-grade Wolverine kind of feel to the movie, right? Just not very funny, not that entertaining. Next, only a little content is added to make it R-rated. This is an R-rated film, barely. Now, that’s really stupid, John.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, why?
SPEAKER 07 :
Right. They should either have gone all in on the R rating, right, and jacked it up, kind of gone all John Wick with it, with the action, right? Go all the way. Or back away, since the R rating limits the audience. You don’t want to do that. That was really dumb. I don’t know why they did that. And it’s going to cost them money. It seems none of the classic characters are developed anything like the cartoon. Now, granted, this isn’t going to bother John Rush, but for people like Andy Pate, this is a problem. The foreigner, he has these weird hypnotic powers. I’m sorry, he was nothing like the cartoon. The chameleon came from a totally different place than the cartoon. I mean, he became like the cartoon character, the chameleon. But he wasn’t that person. OK, the rhino was a totally different person from who he comes from in the cartoon. Heck, even Craven, as I told you, was developed totally different from the cartoon. Why not just make a different movie altogether? Why even have Craven make a different movie or something? I don’t get it. Not since Ishtar have I seen so many great actors performing in a bad film. All right. The award-winning Ariana DeBose, she struggles as Calypso. Does her best, I guess, but her role was boring. Russell Crowe, he looked happier in prison during Gladiator than he did in this movie. I mean, I’m sorry, it wasn’t working. Not that he wasn’t doing his best with the role. You know, Russell Crowe always does his best as he can with a role, right? He always brings it. He doesn’t just cash the check and go home. But what are you going to do with this role? This movie should have starred everyone who got turned down for all the other good jobs. I mean, seriously. In fact, it should have been shown, you know, as the cast at the end. That should have been shown as the cast at the end, right? Instead of rolling the cast, it should have been everyone who was turned down for good jobs in other movies. That should have been the cast of this movie. This movie… Look, I’m not going to say it was horrible, right? What was it, a couple weeks ago or last week that I did the zero-star movie of the year that was unbelievably bad? Look, it’s not that bad. It’s got the action here and there. You know, you’ve got some tense moments and so forth. But honestly, I never really cared about the characters. I didn’t care about him at all. I didn’t care about Kraven. I didn’t care about Calypso. I didn’t really care about his dad. I cared a little bit about his brother, but not a heck of a lot. And… Honestly, the rhino, I didn’t care at all about. He was a boring kind of villain. This was just bad. And so for quality, I’m going to give it one star. Rotten Tomatoes gave it 14%. That’s not good either. No, no. That’s actually, I mean, that’s actually leaning toward a half star right there. I’m not going to be quite that mean. It wasn’t that bad. But it certainly wasn’t good. So I’m going to give it one star. A political… I’m going to give it two and a half stars just for the, you know, animals thing. I don’t know. No, you know what? Make it three. I don’t really care.
SPEAKER 03 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
There was nothing said in this movie that I cared enough about to make it have a political… Yeah, yeah. More religious, three, whatever. I mean, it is R-rated, but, you know, it’s not showing… Sounds barely. Yeah, but it’s not showing a bunch of skin that I can remember. If it did, I’d just… You know, I may have blacked out portions of this movie, just so you know. It was that bad. I stayed in there, though. I stayed in there. This thing, another thing, John, for a lousy little film like this that has really not much story. I mean, the storyline is worth an hour of film, okay? This was like 207, over two hours. Solidly over two hours. That’s a long watch.
SPEAKER 03 :
That’s a big burden.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. I went the distance. Yeah, you did. I went the distance. I went 15 rounds. I did my best. Folks, do I recommend going to Kraven the Hunter? Of course I do not. This was pretty bad. Madam Web, which also came from the Sony line of these Marvel movies. This is actually, I think, a tad beneath Madam Web. We’re about the same. It’s right in that range, guys. This is not worth seeing. Don’t waste your money. Don’t waste your time. Don’t even rent it. Just the moment you feel like renting Craven the Hunter, just watch Avengers for the 18th time and enjoy yourself.

Folks, I am speaking with perhaps the only person in America who has not seen Lord of the Rings.
SPEAKER 03 :
I have not. That amazes me. Never even read the books. Just never did.
SPEAKER 07 :
Now, I’ve only read part of one book. I didn’t really get into the books.
SPEAKER 03 :
My wife’s read them all. I know a lot of people that did, but I didn’t.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay, well, here we go. John, a Lord of the Rings cartoon at Christmastime? Heck yeah, in Lord of the Rings, The War of the Rohirrim.
SPEAKER 06 :
We have faced down death, famine, war to hold these lands together.
SPEAKER 12 :
You do not command the loyalty you think you do. Brothers of Rohan, arise! We have to get our people out.
SPEAKER 06 :
You’re stronger than I knew. Rohan still stands!
SPEAKER 07 :
Rohan still stands, John. I know you were worried, so I’m just letting you know Rohan still stands. You feel better?
SPEAKER 03 :
I’ll show you how out of the loop I am. I didn’t know this was a cartoon.
SPEAKER 07 :
You didn’t, huh?
SPEAKER 03 :
No. Or animated, I should say.
SPEAKER 07 :
I just want to ask, can you imagine Joe Biden saying the word Rohirrim? I’m just saying it like it’s kind of funny. Okay. Well, in this prequel, we are brought over 180 years prior to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Okay. So this is, and even before that, this is before Bilbo, who you don’t know. Yeah, you don’t know these guys. They’re short. I’ll just tell you that. How’s that? Well, let’s set the characters. Gaeli, she stars as Hera, the daughter of Helm Hammerhand, king of Rohan. Now, Helm, he’s a powerful king, and he has two sons who couldn’t be more different. You got Haleth, who’s like Helm, and you got a Hama, who is more sensitive. Kind of reminds me of Jacob and Esau, you know what I mean? Okay. Well, Hera is, well, a woman, so she’s their sister. Well, Helm has a very powerful rival named Freyka, who calls a meeting to campaign for a wedding between Hera and his son, Wolf. And Wolf is voiced by Luke Pasqualino. Well, Helm fights Freyja. He’s not going to go for this, so they get in a fight. All right, so you got the king against his biggest critic. They get in a fight, tragedy ensues, and Wolf vows vengeance. Well, leading his army, Wolf lays siege to Rohan, bringing destruction everywhere we turn. Now, who can rise up against him? Hera? It’s got to be Hera. Why? Because pretty much no one has left. She always has been a tomboy, and now she unleashes her warrior side against a man who was once a friend. Now this story, John, it’s not written by J.R.R. Tolkien. It’s not canonical, so to speak, right? And it’s the first one to put a woman front and center as the hero. So can Hera save Rohan? And what price must she pay? We find out in Lord of the Rings, The War of the Rohirrim.
SPEAKER 03 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
Does that at least sound interesting?
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, not bad.
SPEAKER 07 :
I mean, it sounds like battles and sword fights and so forth. Okay, what works in Lord of the Rings, the War of the Rohirrim? Well, first of all, the backgrounds, they feature great artistry, and you would expect that. Just beautiful. watching some of the eagles fly over these vast lands. It’s pretty impressive, and that’s one of the things that is a real signature aspect of all the Lord of the Rings movies is that the backgrounds are just spectacular. Hera. She’s a good heroine with a blend of strength, courage, intellect, and femininity. She’s the total package, John. Okay. Gotta like Hera. Okay. Wolf is an interesting villain, driven by rage over his loss. He’s ruthless, but he’s vulnerable. I kind of like that. The battle and fight scenes are well choreographed and very brutal at times. So that’s what works in this movie. Now, what doesn’t work in Lord of the Rings, The War of the Rohirrim? Wow, this is big, really. The characters use a truly annoying cheap cartoonistry with too few frames for their movements. It’s like flipping pages to see a character move. Now, I mean, for instance, let’s say they do a cartoon and you’re just watching a character walk across a long room. And ordinarily it would take like 30 frames to do this, right? And so you have that nice smooth motion as the character walks. Imagine using only 10 to 15 frames. Chop, chop, chop. So this gives a choppy feel to the action, unlike the smooth style we’ve grown to enjoy, say, with Pixar and DreamWorks. This is totally different. And it’s on purpose. This is actually a style. But I’m telling you, it’s an annoying style. Next. There’s about 90 minutes of story in a movie that goes over two hours. I think it was 214. So this really drags at times. It really does. Next. The stereotype of the strong-willed woman who won’t be told who to marry, it’s threadbare. We’ve seen this stereotype how many times, right?
SPEAKER 03 :
Right.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. Do something new. But anyway, despite all the battles, the film feels very predictable, which is tough for a two-hour and 15-minute movie, John. I don’t want predictability when I’ve got to sit there that long. Here’s a biggie. It needed more humor. It needed snappier dialogue. So I guess it had that in common with Craven. Not very funny at all. And Lord of the Rings has a number of very funny moments. Not here. This is huge. No elves, dwarves, trolls, and very few orcs. This is barely a Lord of the Rings film. It’s almost all people. Come on, man. We’re watching Lord of the Rings. I want to see these magical creatures that we normally don’t get to see in all the other movies. Right?
SPEAKER 18 :
Right.
SPEAKER 07 :
I mean, why don’t I just pop in Braveheart and watch that again? OK, I thought I was going to see something new or at least see some of these classic characters or different ones. They really didn’t. There was like one creature, a couple of orcs, and that was it. It was really, really stripped down and basically just people. Finally, this is clearly a feminist film as if Lord of the Rings needed one. I mean, why can’t warrior princesses fall in love anymore? And why do the men have to make so many stupid decisions in these movies? It’s driving me nuts. By the way, let’s take a step out of this movie for a moment. I got to do a study here real soon on Disney princesses. And by princesses, I don’t just mean those who are princesses. I mean Disney female leads. When’s the last time one fell in love with a guy? I mean, he had Tangled. I mean, there was a time when almost every single Disney female lead.
SPEAKER 03 :
Good point.
SPEAKER 07 :
Ariel from Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast and so forth fell in love with a man. Now, the last bunch of Disney movies and Disney and Pixar movies have had virtually none of that.
SPEAKER 03 :
Never thought about that.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. In fact, one of the female leads, of course, in Lightyear married a woman.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. You had a female lead in Strange World. Of course, that didn’t matter because the boy was, you know… He was gay. But even movies where you don’t have any of that, these female leads, almost none of them are falling in love with men anymore. They don’t need men. Never thought about that. Right. And this one’s exactly the same. Hera in this movie, she doesn’t need a man either. She just says flat out she doesn’t want to marry. You know, and that’s okay, as I got nothing against that. You choose your lifestyle, whatever. What gets me, though, is that that has become so prevalent in these kids’ films. It is a very obvious thing, a very, very, very obvious trend now, that with kids’ films, the last thing they want to show is a woman, is a girl who wants to marry a boy. And they don’t have it in this movie either. I mean, have you noticed this?
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, no, not until you just said that. Now that you say it, yes.
SPEAKER 07 :
I’ve got to check the numbers.
SPEAKER 03 :
I never really thought about it before, Andy, but you’re right.
SPEAKER 07 :
My wife and I were talking about it, and in the last few years, there was one or two females who wanted to date or marry a boy, and that was their big thing.
SPEAKER 03 :
Maybe they should turn some of the writing over to Hallmark.
SPEAKER 07 :
Maybe. You know, maybe. Okay, let’s jump in here. Rotten Tomatoes gave Lord of the Rings The War of the Rohirrim 54%, not a real ringing endorsement.
SPEAKER 01 :
Not great, no.
SPEAKER 07 :
No, no, no. And you know what? I’m going to go right about there, too. Quality, two and a half stars out of five. This is a dead average movie. It’s too long. It has too little story for too much picture. The way the characters move, yes, you do get more used to it as the movie goes on, but it is… Well, it’s cheap and annoying. It’s like, look, draw more pictures.
SPEAKER 03 :
Spend a little more money.
SPEAKER 07 :
Spend a little more money. Have these people move much more fluidly. Right. And by the way, how about having a little bit of humor in this movie? Lighten it up a little bit. And you know what? It wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world for this beautiful woman and a handsome man to fall in love. I guess I’m getting old-fashioned. I’m just getting tired.
SPEAKER 03 :
No, I can’t argue with you on that one.
SPEAKER 07 :
Although it’s not their fault that the last several movies have been like that. Political, I’m going to take it down just to two stars because of the kind of feminist angle to this. The men really do a lot of stupid things in this movie. It gets old. And at the end, two women ride off together, not in love, just as cohorts. More religious, I’ll give it a three. It was pretty neutral. There was nothing wrong with it. The thing about it is J.R.R. Tolkien was actually a very moral-centered man. And so it’s just kind of wild that this has been done with his storyline. So there you go. Do I recommend going to Lord of the Rings or the Rohirrim? You know, folks, at least it’s interesting to see a Lord of the Rings cartoon come out. This thing is of the quality that it should have been released on TV. It’s cheaper. And the characters, like I’ve been saying, they need to simply draw more and add some humor. It’s not that well written. It’s not that well drawn, at least with the characters. It’s just not that good of a movie. I wouldn’t waste the money. There you go.

Now back to Rush to Reason on KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 03 :
All right, we are back. Friday edition, Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush. Myself, Andy Pate, Charlie Grimes, and movie reviews, by the way. You can always go to the website and find out even some of the past movies that Andy has done. Just go to the show notes section of our website, rushtoreason.com, and you can find those there. Yesterday’s impossible question, why do books smell, or old books smell, I should say. And Charlie actually got this right in my ear yesterday. Because they’re made of paperwood, they’re decomposing.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 03 :
So that’s the smell that you smell with old books. Today’s impossible question. What do the residents of the Galapagos Island use in place of a formal postal system?
SPEAKER 07 :
Finches to fly messages around.
SPEAKER 03 :
Pigeons.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, I’m just saying because of Darwin’s finches.
SPEAKER 03 :
I don’t know. I got nothing. I wouldn’t have gotten this one either. Charlie, any ideas? Nope. Nope. Charlie said tree mail, but no. So anyways, answer that on the Rush to Reason Facebook page.
SPEAKER 07 :
Maybe they just yell at each other.
SPEAKER 03 :
That could be.
SPEAKER 07 :
I mean, it’s not a very big place. No, it is not. Okay, just thinking.
SPEAKER 03 :
I’m surprised there’s residents even there. They use turtles, Charlie says. That’s not a bad idea.
SPEAKER 07 :
Sure. Maybe they have literal snail mail. That could be. I don’t know.
SPEAKER 03 :
Anyways.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. Can we talk a little about lefty loonies?
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, we got a few minutes here. Go for it.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. Well, you know, last week we looked at some lefty loony movies. You know, these big time leftist, you know, wacko liberal actors. But you got more today. We’re doing part two today. We’re going to do part two. I’m going to take a little different angle to it, though, because I’m going to list some off and just say, would you go to this? Would you not? Because we it’s a real difference. Some of them anger us so much that we don’t even want to see their movies. And that takes a lot. But what I wanted to ask is, why do we go to these movies with these super liberal actors? I mean, are we just entertainment addicts? Because I think there’s another reason that we conservatives do that. I think there’s a good reason that we conservatives go to their movies.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, I mean, personally, it has to be a pretty good movie for me to actually go in the first place or even take time at night to watch it on TV or watch a movie, rent it, do whatever. It has to be a really good movie for me to even do that.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. What you just gave was a businessman’s answer and a very good one. In other words, it’s the same reason you’ll hire a liberal person. You go on merit. Right. Okay. Does the movie merit my watching it? Now, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any who go so far as their conduct makes them no longer merit watching. And that gets really extreme.
SPEAKER 03 :
I’ve got a few of those, though. Right. I talked about that last week.
SPEAKER 07 :
Sure. And we’ll get into some of those today. But for the most part, we look at merit. And it’s like, look, if you’ve made a good product, I want to admire your product and what you did. But I got another thing, too, I want to add. Conservatives don’t want to control people. Right. So we don’t want to look at everybody and say, the moment you don’t think like I do, I want to cancel you out of my viewing. I want to cancel you out of my world. I want to silence you out of my world. We want to celebrate their talents. We want to celebrate their abilities. And this is why it was so painful when NFL players would kneel during games and were basically kneeling in favor of racism. Right.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right.
SPEAKER 07 :
Is really what they were doing. That’s right. Against America and for racism. That’s right. You’re right. You know, they were denying the incredible advances we’ve made in America, you know, regarding racism.
SPEAKER 03 :
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 07 :
And, you know, and did I stop watching for a long time? Yes, I did. I stopped watching the NFL period. It was my way of protesting. And those of us who did protest in that way, we obviously brought about big results. The crashing TV ratings did what? They drove away the kneeling and guess what? Now we got NFL players openly doing the Trump dance.
SPEAKER 03 :
It’s way the opposite.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, it’s totally the opposite.
SPEAKER 03 :
We got them wearing MAGA hats.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right. I think that we go to these movies because we want to celebrate greatness and we don’t want to control even the liberal actors. I don’t want to only like you and not just actors, but friends. I don’t want to only like you insofar as you agree with me. What do you think?
SPEAKER 03 :
No, I would agree with that. I mean, we we base things off, you know, for example, we all at times. Well, not weekly, but pretty close to it. We go to Costco. Now, we know that Costco isn’t super conservative, although anymore they’re not.
SPEAKER 07 :
See, I go to Sam’s Club because I’m an American, but go ahead.
SPEAKER 03 :
And what I was going to say is if you look at even where the donations and things like that go, they’re not as far left as they once were. If they are, Andy, they don’t publicize it like they once did. Right. that’s one of those to where, okay, why would you shop in a place where you know it’s a bunch of liberals that own it? Well, no offense, you’re probably not going to buy anything if you use that standard because there’s a lot in the marketplace that is controlled by the liberal. I mean, let’s face it, most of Wall Street is very liberal when it’s all said and done. We know that on a, you know, we talk about that on a monthly basis.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, I mean, Sam’s Club is definitely a little more conservative than Costco, but only a little more. Let’s face it, we go to the one that’s closest.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, Andor has the right product mix. They both have different product mixes as well. They’re not the same.
SPEAKER 07 :
No, they’re a little different, but they’re similar. I mean, the style is similar, what they do. I’ve been to Costco. Although Sam’s Club does not have the chicken bakes that you can get in the deli at Costco.
SPEAKER 03 :
And those are delicious. The way I look at it, and it’s not exactly this way, but if you’re more business-oriented and you need things for your vending machine business or your regular business or you have a restaurant or whatever, you’re typically going to be more on the Sam’s Club end of things. If you’re looking more for the retail aspect of things and you’re looking for maybe even that one-off special that they have running right now or even some of the things you mentioned a moment ago. A little more variety on that end of things at Costco. I can see that. Point being, we all shop at different places, even though you know that the owners of may be very liberal. Right. Why? Because we like what they’re selling, Andy. Well, let’s talk really quick. Which really, in a movie, that’s what they’re doing as well. Right. We like what they’re selling.
SPEAKER 07 :
We like what they’re selling. Let me give an example here. We’ll talk about them in the next hour. Seth Rogen. Seth Rogen hates America. Seth Rogen hates Trump, hates America, and those are not the same. I’m saying this guy has a lot of hate in him. He’s a very hateful guy. He would deny that. I don’t care.
SPEAKER 03 :
No, he is. I would agree with you on that one.
SPEAKER 07 :
And yet I love watching Seth Rogen. I like his movies for the most part. They’ve gotten lesser because he’s getting old. But, you know, I mean, he’s done some great stuff.
SPEAKER 03 :
He’s getting old and he’s getting too angry. That’s what happens when they get angry.
SPEAKER 07 :
When they let their anger through to the movie, to the movies, right, to the films. But when you watch Seth Rogen and he just cuts you up, he has some great lines and his delivery of the lines is so great. Don’t you just admire the artistry? Absolutely. Absolutely. And isn’t it fun to admire the artistry? In fact, I almost feel better knowing I’m admiring the artistry of somebody I disagree with. There’s something freeing about that. It’s like, look, I’m not valuing people just because they agree with me. Because if I do that, all I care about is me. And I want to be better than that. And liberals, the moment a conservative comes out as a conservative in Hollywood, not only do a lot of people in Hollywood refuse to work with that conservative, but liberals don’t want to go to their movies at all. They lash out at Clint Eastwood. It’s crazy.
SPEAKER 03 :
True. And others like him. You’re exactly right. And a lot of those, as we know, a lot of those actors, actresses will get, how do you want to say it, turned away from other type of deals that might come along because of their views. Yes. Yeah, they’re canceled. Thank you, Charlie.
SPEAKER 07 :
They get canceled. Now, we on the right, we tear into some liberal actors, too, and we’ll do it today on the show. But guess what? They’re not losing any jobs over this.
SPEAKER 03 :
No.
SPEAKER 07 :
No, they aren’t.
SPEAKER 03 :
No. Good point. All right. We’ll come right back here in a moment. Golden Eagle Financial is up next. One of the things I was going to talk about and mention as we head down this stretch into the end of the year, make sure you’ve got your financial house in order. Al can help you with that, setting goals for 2025 and beyond. And if you’ve never really sat down with a financial advisor in the past, I highly recommend you do that. SPEAKER 03 :
Live and local, back to Rush to Reason. All right, we are back. Got a few seconds left of this hour, then we’ll come back and do loony lefty movies along with NFL picks.
SPEAKER 07 :
You know, one thing I’d really like to hear in Hour 2, in the second half of Hour 2, of course, is I’d like to hear from anyone who has an actor or actress they just won’t watch. Or they will rarely watch. Maybe watch old movies that they made, so forth. You know, meet the parents with De Niro.
SPEAKER 03 :
Senile.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, but I’d like to hear it. Or if you want to say, nope, I’ll watch any of them. I would like to hear some people’s opinions on this. I really would.
SPEAKER 03 :
I have some that I won’t watch. Some of it’s not just because they’re liberal. Some of it is because I really don’t think they’re as great of an actress or actor as maybe they think they are. That’s some of it for me as well, but that’s another conversation.
SPEAKER 07 :
They often are not as great as they think they are.
SPEAKER 03 :
That’s typically true. Very well said. All right, so we’ve got Hour 2 coming up next. Don’t go anywhere. Remember, again, movie reviews. We’re going to go back and list some of the previous ones as we head into the holidays because there’s a lot of things that you’re going to still see out in the theater right now that Andy’s already done. Go back into our show notes section and look at what some of those reviews are like before you go spend the money at the theater. We’ll be back. Hour 2 is next. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 1 :
Thank you.
SPEAKER 08 :
I’m a rich guy
