SCOTUS to Consider Whether Maryland Parents Can Pull Children Out of LGTBQ-Inclusive Lessons

(Worthy News) – The US Supreme Court has agreed to consider whether parents of elementary school pupils in Montgomery County, Maryland can pull their children out of lessons that use storybooks featuring LGBTQ characters and storylines, the Associated Press reports.

The case was launched against Montgomery County, Maryland Board of Education in May 2023 by a coalition of Muslim, Christian, and Jewish parents who want to “have the right to opt their children out of classroom instruction regarding family life and human sexuality.” The school district had announced in 2022 that the elementary curriculum would be changed to include storybooks featuring young LGBTQ characters as a means to foster inclusivity.

The plaintiffs claim that Montgomery’s new policy violates their right to constitutional rights by requiring their children to participate in lessons that violate their religious beliefs.
The plaintiffs argue there are opt-out provisions in sex education classes that could be applied in this case too.

The Supreme Court will hear an appeal filed by the plaintiffs after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit ruled that the school district is not required to provide an opt-out provision in this case.

The high court Justices will hear the case in the spring or during the court’s new term starting in October.
