Join the experts at Drive Radio for another exciting session where we dive into the intricacies of classic car maintenance. This episode kicks off with a fascinating discussion about ignition timing for a 1955 Bel Air Chevrolet. As always, we’re taking calls from automotive enthusiasts seeking advice on everything from radiator maintenance to understanding modifications in modern vehicle fuse boxes.
SPEAKER 24 :
Being an expert on general automotive knowledge, what would the correct ignition timing be on a 1955 Bel Air Chevrolet with a 327 cubic inch engine and a four barrel carburetor?
SPEAKER 23 :
It is a trick question. Watch this. Because Chevy didn’t make a 327 in 55. The 327 didn’t come out until 62. And it wasn’t offered in the Bel Air with a four-barrel carb until 64. However, in 1964, the correct ignition timing would be four degrees before top dead center.
SPEAKER 25 :
Get ready for another hour of Drive Radio, brought to you by Colorado’s select auto care centers. Got a question for the experts? Then give them a call, 303-477-5600. Now it’s time to pop the hood and get our hands dirty. Drive Radio on KLZ 560 The Source.
SPEAKER 19 :
All right, Hour 2, Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Myself, Pat Schneidt from Alltech Automotive up in Fort Collins. We also have Ken Rackley, Toontech Automotive, who’s down here not far from the studio, Colfax and 225. Of course, Charlie Grimes, our engineer, Larry Unger, answering phones, speaking of the phones. Some of you have texted as well. Yes, if you call and the lines are full, like they are now, you will get a voicemail message. You are still calling the right number. There is none other to call. Don’t leave a message. Just keep trying, and as soon as somebody drops off, you’ll get through. We will fix that voicemail message during the week so next weekend we don’t have These situations, we did some updates here of late, and that’s why the change. On top of that, if there is something that you really are wanting to get an answer for quickly, text us, 307-200-8222. I’ll do my best to text back or I can answer that on air as well, and I can squeeze those in even in between phone calls. Somebody else asked, why do all the stations in town only have three lines? That I can’t answer. We do have a fourth line. It’s a backdoor number that I don’t give out publicly. We use that for special guests and things along those lines. And my gut feeling is because I typically can only talk to one person at a time. Occasionally during the week, I’ll interview two guests at once, and I have two different channels we use for that, and that would leave a line open for somebody still to call in on. And that’s my explanation as to why you only need three lines, because beyond that, I don’t – Yeah, like Charlie just said, you’re just going to wait longer on hold if we had more lines. So I’m guessing that’s why we and a lot of other stations only do the three lines is because of that. So, Conrad, you are next. Go ahead, sir.
SPEAKER 16 :
Thanks for the show as always, brother. Thank you, man. Did you make it to Barrett Jackson this year?
SPEAKER 19 :
I did not. With everything else regarding the other show and the things that have happened of late, I did not go because I felt like I should be here.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yeah, I figured you probably were here because you haven’t had any non-live shows anymore. Well, you know, my question for the day, or my favorite car, of course, is my own, you know, the Torino. So I’ll answer that question.
SPEAKER 19 :
We wish for everybody listening, you have a Starsky and Hutch Torino with a little different engine than what they had. Yes. There you go. Nice.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yeah, well, it’s going to have it definitely for sure. That’s what I’m calling about, John. You know, we’re building that 521 engine. for her and the rain, I’m gonna go ahead and pull it and get it boiled. I think it’s pretty clean, but you might as well do it right now. Spend a lot of money on that engine. Don’t wanna take any chances, but it’s a stock police interceptor for 460 police interceptor radiator. And my nephew was kind of concerned that maybe that wasn’t enough radiator for that engine, but the increase in the horsepower, but I feared that it was designed for heavy duty use. And I really don’t want to go with an aluminum one because I wouldn’t be able to have an air conditioner, condenser, and all that. So I’m learning if we do that. I was going to take it with Spikes Radiator. I hear they’re really good. Have you ever heard of them?
SPEAKER 19 :
Don’t know them. Okay. And really quick, before you boil it and do all that, Conrad, it’s really easy. As you’re draining it, take a flashlight, and even now today they make nice little camera. Bluetooth, go to your phone. Yeah, the Bluetooth, go to your phone. You can run a camera down and even look at each individual. Nice and clear. fin and if it were me conrad i wouldn’t send it anywhere before draining it and then doing that you know scope it basically inspect it and if everything looks clean and you don’t have any corrosion around any of the the uh you know the ports the tubes on the on the fins and that i don’t think i would do anything with it and then last question is it a three or four core I think it’s a four. If it’s a four-core and you drain it and it looks clean, I wouldn’t mess with it. Yeah, right. I wouldn’t do a thing with it. And here’s why, for everybody listening. Some of you are saying, well, why, John? Well, because when you send it out and somebody goes to clean it and boil it, they’re not just cleaning and boiling it. They’re going to remove the ends. So they’re going to desolder those, take them off. They’re then going to do all these different things, and they’ll run like a pipe cleaner, if you would, through all of the tubes and so on to get everything cleaned out. And then they resolder everything back together. Well, my theory on that is it’s kind of that old, if it ain’t broke, let’s not worry about it. The resolder process. Yeah, you now have another risk of a leak and things like that. And reality, Conrad, is if it’s not needed, don’t do it.
SPEAKER 16 :
Okay. That’s what I wanted to call you about.
SPEAKER 19 :
And I’m guessing on yours, it’s not needed, because I know how much you drive, and my gut feeling is it’s not going to be needed.
SPEAKER 16 :
Well, you know, it’s got an aluminum intake manifold on there. That’s the problem between Ferris and non-Ferris metal.
SPEAKER 19 :
You don’t drive it enough to worry about it.
SPEAKER 16 :
Okay. Okay. And you’ve got enough radiator for that big engine.
SPEAKER 07 :
I don’t think you’d get much bigger than that.
SPEAKER 19 :
Even if you went to an aluminum, you’re not going to change much, Conrad.
SPEAKER 09 :
I mean, what’s behind the radiator in terms of a shroud and a fan, I guess, would be a question. Yeah, make sure you can pull a lot of air.
SPEAKER 16 :
As long as you’re pulling air through it, Conrad. It’s a clutch fan.
SPEAKER 19 :
You have a clutch fan with a shroud and all that? Yeah, I wouldn’t worry about it. Should be fine. All right. Okay. Conrad, appreciate you, as always.
SPEAKER 16 :
Have a great day. You betcha, man.
SPEAKER 19 :
Thank you, as always. I appreciate you very much. John, Cheyenne, what’s going on?
SPEAKER 15 :
I was wondering if you guys can help me. It kind of bugs me and troubles me. I have a 2010 Lexus RX350, and the main fuse box under the hood, when you take the cap off on the left top side, There’s a two-inch plug with about two dozen wires that go into it and makes a U-turn and plugs back into the fuse box. And I watched three different videos on YouTube, and everybody plugs in the plug box. But on mine, my plug comes up, and it looks like the dealer did it. It plugs into another female plug. It has a two-wire pigtail splice out and a white deal with a two-pin clip plug. It looks like a jumper clip.
SPEAKER 19 :
Probably a security device the dealer put on at one point in time. And personally, if it were me, I would remove that and put it back the way it would have been originally. Correct.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, because I’m scratching my head. I don’t understand.
SPEAKER 19 :
It’s a pigtail they put in most likely for an immobilizer, they call it back then. They still use them today, trackers and immobilizers, things like that, John, where in a lot of cases dealers had a little chip key thing that they would even have to plug in to be able to move the vehicle. It keeps them from getting stolen and so on. And most likely that’s what it is. And if you don’t need any of that and you’re not using it, which you’re not, I’d pull all that out.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah. Why does it run now and I don’t have to do anything?
SPEAKER 19 :
Well, they probably, before it got delivered, they probably changed the one end that would have to have that key device or whatever that was needed at the time in it. Because believe me, when they’re going to deliver the car, they’re not taking a lot of time. That probably got done in five minutes or less.
SPEAKER 07 :
Probably less, yeah. They probably had that especially. especially made for that vehicle.
SPEAKER 19 :
I know exactly what to do. You trace it out, you’ll find what we’re talking about.
SPEAKER 07 :
And so one of the dealers, what they would do, this is back even in the early 2000s, what they would do would go in and cut the start wire and put a jumper in there. And so when you bought the car, if you wanted that security device, you pay them $200 and you have a removable plug. If you didn’t want that device, they would just put a plug in there that you couldn’t remove, but it’s spliced in there with Scotchloks. I hate that stuff. We’ve run into that causing no-start problems down the road, but it was an easy thing for them to do, and it would keep them from getting stolen off the lot or whatever. And an upsell. They had an upsell deal for however much, and all they had to do was give them another key.
SPEAKER 19 :
So if it were me, again, John, if it were me and you’ve got the ability, you want to trace that out, but what you’re saying, I would almost guarantee you is the situation. Because it just sandwiches in that plug, right? It’s a pigtail.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah. Yeah. Well, see, that’s the deal. It goes from a two-inch plug into a female two-inch plug, so that has to be a deal or two. That’s all it is. It’s just a pigtail. We call them T-taps.
SPEAKER 19 :
It’s just a T-tap. Yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
they put electrical tape over it after they, of course.
SPEAKER 07 :
Sure.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, of course.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. It’s a T10. Yeah. Cause I mean, you go in to buy that vehicle. If they sell you that accessory, they can just slap it on and you’re down the road, you know, that you can pick it up that night still. So, yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
So do you guys think if I put it back to where I’ve seen other people’s fuse boxes without it? You should just be able to remove the T-tap.
SPEAKER 19 :
That’s what we call it, John. You should be able to just remove that. If it’s male, female, male, female, just pull it. Plug it back in.
SPEAKER 15 :
I won’t have any reset computer problems is my question. Shouldn’t.
SPEAKER 07 :
Shouldn’t. Do it with everything off. Key off all that. Key off. Maybe disconnect the battery. Thank you. I was going to say that. Disconnect negative terminal and do that and then plug it back in. Okay.
SPEAKER 15 :
Thanks. That really bugged me. I had no idea what that was.
SPEAKER 07 :
Probably 99% of the people never even notice that.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right. Okay. Yeah, it’s pretty obvious when you pull the cap. It’s a big mess. Right. Well, thank you, guys. Thank you very much.
SPEAKER 19 :
You’re welcome. You’re very welcome, John. Thank you. Let’s take a break. We’ll come right back. Line open, 303-477-5600. Jeff Craig, you guys hang tight. We’ll be right back. Drive Radio, KLZ 560.

Here’s why you need personal injury attorney Kevin Flesch on your side. He understands the way the jury thinks. In the context of a personal injury case, you’ve been hurt by someone else’s negligence. The idea is that you’re going to try to recover so that you can get back to where you were just prior to that incident occurring. What that really means from a jurist’s perspective is that you’re going to be asking them to award you money. So when we talk about fairness, we’re talking about six people that you don’t know. Those six people view the evidence and make a unanimous decision that will decide what the fair value is. When you’re the one who’s hurt, you have a good idea of what you think it’s worth. The question is, can you persuade those other individuals whom you don’t know and were witnesses to believe that’s what the case is worth? Kevin Flesch understands the way the jury thinks. All right, we are back. Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Thank you guys for listening. We appreciate it very much. Jeff in Montana, you’re next. Go ahead.
SPEAKER 14 :
Hey, good morning again, guys. Your show kicked off with a bang.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 14 :
That Jerry calling in about the Cheetah. My last name is a German name. It’s pronounced Cheetah.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay, nice.
SPEAKER 14 :
So, you know, we’ve always looked for all things Cheetah, but I had never heard of that vehicle.
SPEAKER 09 :
Now you kind of want one. There you go. I do. That’s right.
SPEAKER 07 :
Be one of the 13 people that still has one.
SPEAKER 14 :
Well, that was going to be my point is I went out and did a quick search, and in 2015, Hemings had one listed for $580,000. Yep. Okay, maybe a picture. Probably a bit more than that. Right. Right.
SPEAKER 19 :
And really quick, Jeff, going back to our call and Fix-It Radio talking about just different things and warranties and investments and so on. That is a car, by the way, that if somebody had enough money and you were able to buy, you’re going to make money on that car, not lose any. Right.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yep. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 19 :
That’ll be a million bucks before long if it isn’t already.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah. Yeah, I was going to say it’s probably up there.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yep.
SPEAKER 14 :
It’s probably up there. Yeah. But I did some… And a little bit more research, and there’s several companies that make kit karts for cheetahs, and one’s called Evolution. And so you can buy, like, the basic frame, and then you put, you know, all the motor and transmission, all the other stuff you want in there, and the frame starts at 65K, so that’s a little more doable. That’s frame and body. I mean, it’s all complete without the drivetrain.
SPEAKER 07 :
Sounds like an easy project. Yep, if you’ve got some skills. Oh, yeah. Still 100 grand by the time you’re done. At least, yeah.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, a weekend. A weekend, you know. Yeah, get it done.
SPEAKER 07 :
Have it done by Monday.
SPEAKER 14 :
But you’ve given me food for thought. And then on the heads-up display question earlier, too, I think, if I remember correctly, they were looking at integrating forward-looking infrared. Okay. Into that. And so when you could see animals and different things, that’s because they had infrared heat signatures.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. And I think that must be what they had on that one that I saw. But, yeah, I don’t know.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, that’s used in the military a lot. So I just see that as one of the things coming down the pipe. As we have more and more cameras on there, how hard is it to integrate another – FLIR camera in and integrate that into a picture. I don’t know when, but I predict that’s probably going to be something that comes down the road. And then, before I get to my question, why three lines? You know, the late, great Rush Limbaugh even only had three lines. And I think that was just the way they made them back in the day. Our station here in Missoula, Montana, has seven lines, but they just upgraded. Town Square Station, and they just upgraded. So… I think it’s just the systems that they built just had three lines. And as you said, why do you need any more than that?
SPEAKER 07 :
I mean, do you hold for, you know, 15 minutes?
SPEAKER 19 :
Even today, some have been holding that long already. So it just increases that.
SPEAKER 14 :
Right. But my question is, I have had on and off sporadically on my 2007 sport track. And it seems particularly in the winter that I will get a remove object under passenger seat light. And I press the button and it goes away. But at the same time, the airbag light is on. And I had a big clue as to what’s going on just this week when my 90-pound granddaughter got in and out. I noticed that when she got in, it went out. And then as she got out, it came back on. So I don’t know if you have any familiarity with that warning light or not, that warning message. But to me, it seems like it might be the airbag sensor switch in the seat.
SPEAKER 19 :
That’s what it seems like. It’s weight controlled.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, maybe there’s something under, maybe it’s detecting upward, maybe something, yeah. Pushing on the bottom. Exactly, or, yeah, something weird. I can’t imagine, yeah, hard to say what that would be sensing with that message, yeah.
SPEAKER 09 :
Is there anything under the seat?
SPEAKER 14 :
There isn’t. No, I have cleared it out multiple times, so. Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
Nothing hitting any of the wires for the buckle or anything?
SPEAKER 14 :
Not that I know of, not that I can tell. My wonder was, you know, all things airbag, I proceed with extreme caution, even more so than touching brakes. I had a friend who said, I’ll do anything that helps the car go. I won’t touch anything that makes the car stop. And with this one, I won’t do anything that makes the car explode.
SPEAKER 09 :
That’s very good advice. Kind of, I think, what Ken is saying, too. It would be good to check the integrity of that wiring connection. So if you thought about removing that seat, unbolting it from the truck, to do that, you would have to disconnect the wiring harness connection and just want to make sure that that’s clean and tight. If that is clean and tight, then it may be that airbag sensor in the seat, like you’re saying.
SPEAKER 14 :
Is that something I can replace, or is that going to require a full street work?
SPEAKER 07 :
That is in the upholstery, I believe. Yeah, you have to take the cushion out, or it’s on top of the cushion. Yeah, pretty sure. It might even be part of the cushion, actually.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, okay. So basically, check the connectors.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, yeah, check the connectors under there. On the buckle itself, too, I don’t think it would set that code, but at least, yeah, the main harness underneath that seat should be only one connector, I would imagine. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER 14 :
I hadn’t thought about the buckle part. Yeah, every time she goes in, her seatbelt goes on. So is that interconnected with the airbag as well?
SPEAKER 07 :
It is, yeah. It has to be buckled in order for the airbag to even activate.
SPEAKER 14 :
Oh, okay. Interesting. Yeah, because it won’t go off if the seatbelt’s not on.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right, yeah. If the seatbelt’s not on, it won’t… It won’t activate. Yeah, it won’t activate.
SPEAKER 14 :
And it detects whether… The passengers there.
SPEAKER 07 :
The weight. By the seat belt, and then the weight. Yeah, yeah. Sensor in the seat sees that there’s weight on it, how much weight, and then the buckle says that it’s buckled, so it’s ready to go at that point according to that weight. Typically, the buckle’s going to set a different code than your message that you’re getting, but, you know, just an airbag light typically on that, but…
SPEAKER 09 :
You might try, without a passenger in the seat, just close that buckle, fasten that seatbelt, and see what behavior changes.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yep, that’s just what I was thinking of doing. Okay. All right, I’ve got a couple of paths.
SPEAKER 19 :
All right. Appreciate you, Jeff.
SPEAKER 14 :
Thank you very much. You said, if not, what?
SPEAKER 07 :
Get a bag of flour, said him. Yes, strap it in.
SPEAKER 14 :
There you go. Yeah. There you go. All righty. Thanks, Jeff. Thanks, Jeff.
SPEAKER 19 :
Appreciate you. Jeff and Golden, Craig, guys, hang tight. We’ve got a review coming up and a break as well. We did a review earlier this week on a Lexus GX550 that for some of you might be an interesting vehicle, so stay tuned. We’ll be back right after that. All right, we are back. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. We’ve got a couple of car reviews to do. Richard, you lately, and this is a car that’s pretty popular among a lot of individuals, 2024 Lexus GX550 Overtrain. Talk about that.
SPEAKER 06 :
No, sorry. And I missed it. 550 Overtrail.
SPEAKER 19 :
Overtrail.
SPEAKER 06 :
Overtrail.
SPEAKER 19 :
Sorry, that’s my bad. I knew that, too. Overtrail.
SPEAKER 06 :
Nope, you’re good. Yeah, so 2024 Lexus GX550. This is the all-new, maybe one of the hottest cars on the market right now, Dad, right? It is a, well, I’ll just say it’s a hot item in that it is, Lexus has redesigned the GX. It was getting stale, I’ll just say it. They’ve sort of redesigned it a few times. I think they’ve hit the mark on this vehicle. I’ve got several compliments on this car, Dad. Several people commented on it, and it’s one that we’ve been wanting to get in for a while now. So we’ll jump right into it. Different trim levels, right? There’s all sorts of things you can do. The Overtrail is the one that we had more gear towards the off-road. It’s got a few different off-road pieces on it as far as… You can read a little bit more about that yourself, depending on how you want to equip it. There’s a luxury version that’s actually got a third row, which kind of fits into that larger SUV sort of market. But we didn’t get a chance to do that. We just had your typical kind of, I guess, it’s technically a five-passenger vehicle. I will say this, Dad. It’s a new 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6. It’s fantastic, and they have solved some of their power problems that they had over the years that you’ll talk about here in a second that were well-known, right? They did a phenomenal job on it. I think it works well. It drives really well. It drives smooth. It feels smaller than it is, Dad, right, in that you get in this car and you don’t feel like you’re driving a large boat because sometimes some of the large cars – out there, they have that effect where it feels like you’re driving a larger vehicle than you actually are.
SPEAKER 18 :
Right.
SPEAKER 06 :
And that’s something that it just can take away from the total value of the car as far as that goes. Its body on frame, as you know, obviously has a lot of the off-road, you know, that gives it some of the off-road capabilities. But you’ve seen these, you haven’t driven it yet, but from what I was describing to you, they made a lot of improvements from the previous generation to this iteration.
SPEAKER 19 :
I like – I’ve not driven this car, but I like the look of this vehicle. I think they’ve done a really good job on it, and I’ve been up and close. I’ve sat in it, all of that. I mean, that part of it, Richard, I really enjoy, and I think Lexus did a really great job – or, you know, Toyota. That’s the owner of Lexus. They did a really good job on this vehicle. though about this particular vehicle that you and I were commenting on because I was driving a vehicle you were driving that vehicle and we were commenting on you know just everything from you know road noise and power and different things but this particular vehicle because of the roof rack you didn’t care so care for so much did you
SPEAKER 06 :
Dad, I had several people get in it. They are Lexus fanatics. That’s all they basically own. And they love everything about this car except for the roof rack. And I’ll just say it, Lexus, we had a similar vehicle. I think we had a Toyota, no, a Sequoia that had the similar roof rack. There’s just something about the design of it that causes excess road noise or wind noise everywhere. above about 50, 55 miles per hour.
SPEAKER 19 :
That would drive me crazy, by the way.
SPEAKER 06 :
And here’s the deal, Dad. On an otherwise quiet vehicle on the inside, and like I said, smooth, got a nice cooler box, pun intended, on the inside. You’ve got really easy-to-use controls, which I got several compliments on. It takes away from the vehicle. Now, I think you can remove it, and so I’m not going to knock the vehicle for it, right? I think if you got the luxury trim that offers that third-row seating and some other, I think you could get away from it. I just would love, because I know the reason they put it on there on the over-trail is so that you can put some accessories and you can do some things like that. that with it that you couldn’t do maybe standard right or you don’t have to buy an aftermarket accessory i just would love it if they would engineer it better to not have that outside of that that one of my most favorite cars that i’ve driven over the past number of years So this vehicle, and don’t fall out of your chairs, folks, $84,575, which some of you are going to say, oh, my goodness, folks, for a large SUV that’s in the luxury market, which is what this vehicle is, that’s right in line, Dad, and some could argue it’s even a little bit less. Yeah, true. Good point. It’s cheaper than some of its competitors out there. So I love it. The fuel economy, just for folks, if you care, with the V6, it’s got the twin turbo. It doesn’t have a hybrid option yet, but I guess we’ll see what’s coming. I’ll be honest. I didn’t look too much into that. It’s a 15 to 21 for an average of 17. I already gave the price point. I would really highly encourage folks, and here’s the deal, Dad, if you want one of these things, you’ve almost got to get on a waiting list. That’s how much they are in demand right now. So we encourage you, if they have one, maybe they’ll let you test drive it at a Lexus dealer. If they don’t, still go in, check it out. And when you do that, let them know that John and Richard Rush from Drive Radio and Rush to Reason sent you.

SPEAKER 19 :
We are back. Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Thanks for joining us today, by the way. We appreciate it very much. And I’ve had several different questions today really quick on when to change oil, things along those lines. One in particular, which I want to cover really quick, is this particular person has a vehicle that’s using about a quart of oil every 1,500 miles or so. And the question was, you know, it’s got 135,000 miles on it. At what point should I think about doing something else with this engine or with this vehicle? And I’m like, It’s a quart every 1,500. Under the new car warranty, if it’s not using a quart in about 600 to 700 miles, the factory won’t even do anything on that engine. So no offense. Keep driving. Have fun. Enjoy it because it’s not using enough oil to worry about it at this point.
SPEAKER 07 :
Every five tanks. Exactly.
SPEAKER 19 :
Put a little fuel in it or put a little oil in it along with the fuel and call it good and keep driving. So that for a lot of you listening, if you’re in that same boat, engines use oil and most just don’t check to know. Right. Right.
SPEAKER 07 :
Exactly. So, yeah. And we try to inform people of that. You know, when you brought it in, it wasn’t registering on the dipstick. You probably had no lights or no.
SPEAKER 19 :
But it’s still using oil.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yes, they do. That’s right.
SPEAKER 19 :
Consume. Craig, what’s going on today?
SPEAKER 12 :
Hey, John, this is Craig in Loveland.
SPEAKER 19 :
Good to hear from you, man.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, you bet. I just wanted to compliment you on your show, yet you’ve had several compliments today. And ongoing, just so worth the time. Thank you. It’s amazing. Your guests are awesome, always knowledgeable, very generous with their tech tips and stuff like that. I do have a question on my own vehicle, and then I’ve got a quick comment after that. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 19 :
Go for it, Craig. Perfect.
SPEAKER 12 :
I’ve got an 11 Expedition. Runs great, 140K. But I’m starting to suspect some transmission issues when the vehicle is under stress, going up a hill, trying to pass foot all the way in and maybe against a wind or something. The transmission seems to want to slip or hesitate or surge, and it’s pretty consistent when it’s under stress. And it’s a sealed unit, so I don’t know what the diagnosis steps are at this point.
SPEAKER 07 :
Are there any lights coming on, any check engine light or anything? No.
SPEAKER 01 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
Typically, if there were to be a slip, I would say it would turn a light on. So probably not a slip, so to speak. And Ford doesn’t know how to detect misfires, so that could be a misfire. And not saying that is it, but when were the last time, like, the spark plugs or the coils were replaced?
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, they haven’t been, but in reference to that point, it sometimes will even rev up while it’s feeling like it needs to shift. It’s going to hesitate, shift, rev up a little bit, and not find the right gear.
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, okay.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
So it does feel like an exact slip. I mean, you can see it on the tack and everything. It’s hunting. Yes.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah. It’s hunting. Exactly. And then it’ll find it. And then, of course, by that time I have to take my foot out of it because I can’t pass any longer. I’ve missed the opportunity. And then I’m wondering, uh-oh, is this thing going to blow up or what?
SPEAKER 09 :
I’m sorry if I missed it, but did you mention already, have you serviced the transmission fluid or anything regularly or regularly?
SPEAKER 12 :
Not at all.
SPEAKER 09 :
Not at all. Okay.
SPEAKER 12 :
No, no. And we’ve had it since it was new. So that was my, you know, I can’t check the fluid, but. Can I service?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yes. I would do that first. And that fluid can be inspected. Absolutely. It just has to be done from underneath, yeah.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, so there’s a service procedure. But at that mileage, do it. Yeah, I think what we’re saying is if there is a transmission problem, you won’t fix that with the fluid service, but you will definitely help prolong the life of the transmission and the shifting precision of that transmission if you can.
SPEAKER 19 :
Well, and in some cases, I’ve been doing a bunch of studying on this of late, Craig, and depending upon the condition of the fluid, what it’s doing at that time, and so on, in some cases, servicing it may actually help with that problem, but you won’t know until you do it.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, okay. And it’s needed, as Pat said, regardless.
SPEAKER 07 :
Way past, yeah, exactly. It should have been done at 50.
SPEAKER 12 :
That is true. Hey, listen, I’ve got a comment that I’d like to make, and… I don’t want to put John on the spot, but I want to let the world know that I hired John as a business coach about a year and a half ago. And I have, well, we’ve started an auto parts business, used auto parts online through eBay and other sources. And John helped me navigate the startup of all that, the correct way, the best way to do that, paid off, steady growth, with John’s gentle hand of guidance. And I just want to announce to you, John, I don’t think I told you this, but we were told by eBay just a couple of days ago that we are now in the top 5% of all eBay sales internationally as well as nationally.
SPEAKER 19 :
Awesome. Good job, Craig.
SPEAKER 12 :
Congrats. And we’re selling a lot of product. We’re shipping a lot of product. Your gentleman with the ignition issue on the GM… truck, kind of spurred me to this. Nice. Yeah, because he talked about eBay. But, yeah, I mean, we’re just smoking, and I want to thank you for it. I want to thank you publicly. I can call you. I know I can call you, but I want to do it publicly. That’s huge. It means a lot.
SPEAKER 08 :
Thank you. I appreciate that very much. Thank you, sir. Well, congrats on your business, and I will second what you just said. John is a great business coach. He’s a great business person, so we’re all fortunate to have him in our circle.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, absolutely. Good to call you a friend.
SPEAKER 19 :
Craig, thank you, sir. I appreciate it. Tell your wife hi for me as well, if you would, please. I will do that.
SPEAKER 12 :
I’ll do the same to yours. Appreciate you, man. Love you, Craig.
SPEAKER 19 :
Thank you very much. I appreciate those kind words. I mean that sincerely. So, Jeff and Golden, you are next.
SPEAKER 11 :
Hey, how are you doing, sir? Good, sir. How much did you pay that guy to call in? Not near enough.
SPEAKER 19 :
No, I’m just kidding. Craig and his wife are great people, very much. That’s awesome, man.
SPEAKER 11 :
Love them dearly. That’s a great testimony right there. That’s cool. I need to, you know, I’ll be, hopefully I can be a pupil at some point here, too. Well, thank you.
SPEAKER 19 :
I’m here to help.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah. Question. Working on a, what’s a 15 Kia Optima. Working out for a friend. and it’s got no fan, right? And I think she says it overheats, obviously, on her. I have yet to get it to overheat. Actually, she was adding just pure water right before the cold snap, so I made sure to get some coolant in that mixture, and I probably saved a cylinder head and whatnot block on it. So I’ve driven around. I can’t get it to necessarily heat up on me, but the fan, I did notice the fan doesn’t come on now. I’ve checked. I’ve, like, arced over the… The sensors, there’s a couple sensors on that thing, coolant temp sensors. And I think I’ve taken those out of the equation, and it still wasn’t one to turn that fan on. And I did read somewhere that it can be an air conditioning connected to the air conditioning. And a guy said he fixed his air conditioning, and then all of a sudden that fan started coming on. And so I’m just a little bit of a – I replaced the – Was it the relay for that fan? But I talked to a guy yesterday. There may be another relay in it.
SPEAKER 19 :
Possible.
SPEAKER 07 :
Does the fan come on when you turn the AC on?
SPEAKER 11 :
No.
SPEAKER 07 :
No, it doesn’t.
SPEAKER 11 :
And the AC doesn’t blow cold either.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. And then on the scanner, what do you see temperature-wise? Like coming from the coolant temp sensors? Good question. Yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
That’s a good question. I haven’t done that. My dang scanner got stolen about a month ago and I have about another one. But I did go get it. I haven’t had any live data like that to compare, but the needle’s working on the gauge, so I was thinking that that was fine.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, sometimes they run two different sensors for that, though. They might. Yeah. One for the computer in the car and one for the gauge. Right. Sometimes, and not necessarily that’s the case, but yeah.
SPEAKER 19 :
And I’m assuming, Jeff, you’ve checked all fuses and all of the easy stuff so far?
SPEAKER 11 :
yeah okay okay have you yeah yeah have you tried putting power right to the fan to see if it even works yeah see if it spins yeah yep yep i even bought an extra another fan down it yeah okay and it does um yeah the fan works but it’s a dual fan it’s a dual i think it’s a dual speed motor though on that probably variable yeah yeah yeah so there’s it seems like there’s a logic issue somewhere
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, so, I mean, getting live data is going to be your first step because you need to see what it’s – Is it telling it to even come on? Exactly. Is it commanding it on? Is it not getting the right sensor or something? Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, what temps it’s reading and so on, Jeff?
SPEAKER 1 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right, right, and I haven’t – like I said, I’m down a tool. I need to pick up another scanner, but if I can get a guy to scan it enough for me, I’m probably going to bring it over to the shop that’s just real close to me, and he was going to –
SPEAKER 07 :
That’s next step.
SPEAKER 09 :
That seems like next step. I think you’ve covered a lot of the basics already.
SPEAKER 07 :
See what your inputs are and know what’s capable of working.
SPEAKER 11 :
The only thing I haven’t done is that extra relay. If there is definitely two relays going to that fan, I know I’ve looked at the one, but I haven’t located and figured out which the other one is. So I guess I ought to do that before I get too… Right. Exactly. So, and another question, what is any, you know, I just bought, I’m like, I’m just like Mr. Rush there. I bought me an electric, but I did, I got the, I got a leaf. Okay. I mean, this is, I went from a 69 F two 50 to this leaf kind of quite a jump, but it’s been interesting. You know what I mean? It’s an interesting learning process. Oh yeah. Going to find these plugins and showing, you know, bear what you get to the location. And then there’s just a, you know, a cut bear wire and all this stuff. Well, crazy. Yeah, not for everybody. They’re very nice to drive. They’re comfort-loving. I mean, how quiet they are and all that stuff is amazing. Do they tune them? Can you get a guy to make them go faster?
SPEAKER 19 :
Not that I’ve seen. I’ve looked. I haven’t seen anybody other than Tesla that’ll give you the download if you pay him to do so. I’ve not seen anybody else that’ll override and do any kind of programming.
SPEAKER 09 :
I’ve actually not owned one, so I might be speaking out of turn here, but I’ve heard that they’re actually pretty responsive and peppy to drive overall as a vehicle class, right?
SPEAKER 11 :
Oh, they are. No, it is. It’s amazing. You can go from 60 to 80 just with a, you know, it’s amazing. Yeah, where you better hold on to the steering wheel because she’s going to move on. You know what I mean? It’s crazy. Yeah, no, they’re amazing. But it does have that limit, and I just always like to – I mean, I’m a race car guy anyway, so it’s – There you go. I was just curious, you know what I mean? And the guys at Nissan, they gave me a couple numbers. I didn’t take it down there, but they had a couple guys where they think you might be able to. Okay.
SPEAKER 19 :
So I didn’t know, like – They’ve had to jailbreak it and do something along those lines, and yeah, that I don’t know, Jeff.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right, yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
Probably not worth it. It’s really not worth it. I mean, it was just kind of more of a fun question.
SPEAKER 07 :
Just make your foot respond quicker. Yeah. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER 11 :
I’ll tell you what, they do incredible in the snow. I’m running this front snow tire. They’re heavy, yeah, absolutely. 4,600-pound Volkswagen Rabbit, you know what I mean? And the thing just plows through the snow.
SPEAKER 19 :
That’s right. That’s crazy. Thank you, sir. Jeff, appreciate you very much. Got a couple lines open, 303-477-5600. Eric, hang tight. We’ll take you as soon as we come back. Drive Radio, KLZ 560.

All right, we are back, finishing out the first hour of, or sorry, second hour, I mean, of Drive Radio. One more hour coming your way is what I meant to say. Eric is next. Go ahead, Eric.
SPEAKER 10 :
Hey, guys. Hey, last week, John, you were talking about the whole cold weather thing. Right. Starting that one. And lo and behold, on Tuesday, I think it was either Tuesday or Wednesday, I’m wandering online. There’s a USA Today article. Regarding the whole cold start thing that completely went against what you were saying. And I’m reading this laughing at what they were at their comment. And it did not mention that other that shop that or that other guy you were talking about. Dave. But yeah, Dave. Yeah. And I’m laughing at some of the comments or some of the article. And then I’m looking at the comments. and there’s probably about 50 people commenting, and 45 of them are saying the same things that we were saying last week. No, this is not the way you need to do it. And then there’s people asking, like, other questions, and then all of a sudden there’s somebody going, oh, no, all of you people are wrong. If this was the case where you had to do this and this and this, the manufacturers would tell you to do this, and none of this is, they’re correct. You don’t need to go through all this process. And it’s just like, really? Have you ever bothered to look at vehicle cold start on YouTube? And especially they’re talking about, and a guy last week brought that up too, is there’s videos showing what they deal with in Siberia when it’s 75 below. And the fact that you have to put a cover over the car if you let your car shut off. You have to put a cover over the car and then a portable heater in the right spot in order to warm the oil up. And after an hour, it shows the oil is finally thin enough to where you can attempt to start it. But they’re showing at 70 below, they pull the dipstick out, and it’s just like tap, tap, and you break the dipstick, and the oil breaks off in chips. It was frozen solid.
SPEAKER 1 :
Wow.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, well, and to your point, Eric, and I think, unfortunately, there are a lot of very naive individuals. And it’s interesting, as I talked last week about that whole conversation, what started at Dave, Dave’s Auto Center up in Utah. There’s no secrets there. He’s the one that really got that going. It’s interesting. I watched a video of him this last week where he said, I didn’t say any of that, kind of backtracking on… Some of what actually came out. And I’m like, well, yeah, you did. In fact, there was a lot of people that even took that video and added their own comments and said, well, yeah, Dave, you actually did.
SPEAKER 07 :
But you said here you really didn’t. Yeah.
SPEAKER 19 :
I mean, it’s like, well, that is exactly what you said. And you you really because of his following misled a lot of individuals that, frankly, I think. are frankly misled because he was completely wrong. And I talked about that last week. But yeah, Eric, I mean, all you have to do is study, you know, super cold weather, not only driving, but just what happens with certain types of, you know, machinery and engines and things that have fluid in them and so on. It’s like you knucklehead. Yes, you have to warm things up.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. And like I say, if you decide to get bored and waste time on YouTube and start looking at these videos out of Siberia and whatnot, and when they’re dealing with the cars, I mean, you just sit there in amazement and kind of chuckle at it. And the one I’m watching, this woman, they’re talking about there’s an eight-story parking garage where, and I guess a lot of vehicles over there have double windshields.
SPEAKER 07 :
Wow. Insulating factor. Yeah. Wow.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, that would make sense. Yeah, they basically glue a second windshield on top of the main windshield, your regular windshield, because of the icing issues. And she’s showing, she pulls into this eight-story parking garage and gets about one and a half levels in, and every window completely just… ice is over from the temperature change.
SPEAKER 19 :
Wow. Interesting.
SPEAKER 10 :
You know, and it’s like your watch is going, okay. And then they show, well, this is why we have, you know, starting sensors on our cars. And, you know, they replace batteries like every other year in most cases because they die. And, you know, and it’s showing this car was idling. The battery, it shut off. The remote start or whatever, it shut off. And two hours later, the person came out, and then they were shown the process to get the car restarted. And it’s like, yeah, okay. But, hey, and then I missed it last week. The question last week was, what car would you buy when you’re talking about Barrett-Jackson? Go ahead. So here’s a question for all three of you guys based on that. Watching Barrett-Jackson, watching Super Saturday last week, and they had the gullwing, the Mercedes gullwing, and they said it was, yeah. And I’m watching this. I’m drooling over it. My wife makes the comment. She goes, I mean, it’s a nice-looking car, but, I mean, is that grounds for divorce right there?
SPEAKER 19 :
It’s on the table. And that’s another one of those cars that if you ever have a chance to own one, you will never lose money.
SPEAKER 18 :
Right, right.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, exactly. I mean, they’ve kind of peaked a little bit, but not really. They’ll come back. Yeah, it’s like they kind of peaked a little bit, or it’s more like they’ve plateaued, and then I think they’re going to start going up again, because they were saying that the 56… There was only 300 of them, and they’re all accounted for.
SPEAKER 19 :
When you’re that low in numbers, it’s like art, Eric. They will come back, period. I’d be afraid to drive it, honestly.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, right. Well, you don’t.
SPEAKER 19 :
You go park that car and just take pictures.
SPEAKER 10 :
That’s right. And then once a month, you push it out of the garage, hand wash it, push it back in, and put the cover back on it. you know type type thing you know or you put it that’s the put in a museum is really where it should go yeah its own climate control exactly yeah yeah but when she but when she said that she goes yeah it’s a beautiful car but i just kind of don’t get it i’m just like
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, well.
SPEAKER 10 :
Your father was a mechanic his entire life. You grew up working in his shop. He would know.
SPEAKER 19 :
He would know. That’s right. Good one, Eric. Good one.
SPEAKER 04 :
Hey, man, I’ll let you go.
SPEAKER 19 :
Appreciate you very much. Thanks for the call, Eric, and the reiteration of what we talked about last week as well. Michael in Cheyenne, hang tight. Mike in Highlands Ranch. So two Mikes. One line open, by the way. 303-477-5600. 303-477-5600. And then, again, just back to some of the questions I’ve gotten in regards to oil changes. So one other one I wanted to add in before the top of the hour. Somebody texted in in a vehicle where they don’t drive a lot per year for pretty low miles. They did an oil change back in September. They’ve put about 1,200 miles on it since, maybe 1,600. And they’re going to get ready to go on a 3000 mile trip here in the not too distant future. Wanted to know if they should change oil prior to the trip. And I know the vehicle and all of that. And basically what I said was, go have a fun trip. Change it when you get back. You really at that point, you don’t have enough miles on it to justify changing it now. You will when you get back. It’s highway miles that you’re driving. So, yeah, you’ll be a little bit over probably the mark I would want to be at actually an oil change, maybe about 500 miles. But given the fact you’re doing a road trip, I don’t care about that. Go have fun. Enjoy your trip. All right. We’ll be right back, guys. One line open again, 303-477-5600. Drive Radio, myself, Pat, and Ken. We’ll be right back here on KLZ 560.
