Being an expert on general automotive knowledge, what would the correct ignition timing be on a 1955 Bel Air Chevrolet with a 327 cubic inch engine and a four barrel carburetor?

It is a trick question. Watch this. Because Chevy didn’t make a 327 in 55. The 327 didn’t come out until 62. And it wasn’t offered in the Bel Air with a four-barrel carb until 64. However, in 1964, the correct ignition timing would be four degrees before top dead center.

Now… So somebody called and asked, okay, if we do the outside, let’s say that you do the windshield and you do the inside tint, which we’ve been talking about that for a while now because of the UV protection, and I think it helps with astigmatism and so on. So for those of you listening, if you’ve got that condition, the inside tint helps immensely. That nighttime driving where those – Those lights coming at you get kind of weird. The tinting actually changes all of that with astigmatism, and it’s not as bad. And I’ll just tell you that straight up because I have it. And, yes, in fact, it does work. Now, the question was, if I have that and then I still do the other coating on the outside of the windshield, is there going to be distortion once I’m done?
SPEAKER 03 :
The short answer, yes.
SPEAKER 07 :
Once you’re done, I should say.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yes. You’re still going to see that distortion. How bad?
SPEAKER 08 :
How bad?
SPEAKER 03 :
It’s not that bad. So you can definitely see past it.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 03 :
Like if you’re not like looking at it, which you shouldn’t if you’re driving. Right.
SPEAKER 11 :
So if you’re looking through it, you’re not going to notice it as much. The way you say it is like you don’t look at the windshield. You look through the windshield. Yes. Okay. And you’re not going to see anything.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. So as long as you’re looking through it, you won’t see it. But if you start staring at it, you will notice it.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, if you start, like, really looking for it, you’re going to see it right away.
SPEAKER 07 :
Which is something that I don’t recommend if you stare at the windshield. I don’t recommend it. Good point. Okay, is it annoying or do you just get used to looking through it and it’s not a big deal?
SPEAKER 03 :
I mean, that’s going to depend on personalities. Some people are a lot more picky than others.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, like people that don’t like to roll the windows down. You know what I mean? You know what I mean? Yeah, I’m a little picky.
SPEAKER 03 :
Like, for me, my husband had that. He had the window tint, and he had the WPF on his windshield. And he didn’t even, I don’t even think it took him a while to notice. Me, however, as soon as I got in the car and I started driving, I could tell every time I could see the lines, like the lines on the street, because they would distort a little bit. Oh. And it took me a little while to get used to it.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. But I’m assuming it’s one of those things where, yes, once you get used to it and look through it, it’s not as big of a deal and off you go. Okay. All right. So that was a text message that had come in. So if you’re listening, hopefully I got that answered. If not, please let me know and we can answer that a little bit more. Now, lots of questions, by the way, always get these when it comes to everything from, you know, wraps and window tint and the PPF, which is essentially clear bra, but you can now put PPF, uh, And you guys will laugh at me for this, but you can put PPF pretty much anywhere. And I’ve got some even in the studio. So in our studio, which we – over the, I think, kind of Christmas time, we had everything painted. So we had a deal where everything got painted, new carpet and some other stuff put in and so on. And because of the way my studio is situated – the chairs at times, if people aren’t careful, they can bang the wall. And it got to the point to where, even before painting, it banged the wall enough to where it even kind of starts to get the paint to flake off. And, you know, yes, you would think people would pay more attention, but I’m not always the only one in here. You know, we have other hosts and other people that use this studio and yes i’m in it the most but it’s not mine it’s shared by others i kind of call it mine because i’m here more than anyone but it is shared and there’s other people that use it and so on and in turn there were places where the chair would run into the wall and mark it up and i’m particular and so i thought okay once we’re done painting how do i keep this from happening so i said roy i want a sheet of ppf yeah And I will cut it and put it on the wall and so on, which I did. The mistake I made, and this is for those of you listening. So I put some PPF on the walls in the studio to where the chairs won’t bang. And if they do, it is the PPF. And sure enough, and I’m looking at it right now, it has kept the wall from getting marked up and chipped and so on. And I know the chairs are still banging into it at times. So it’s kept all that nice and clean. Now, here’s the mistake I made. And we’re going to fix it. I just haven’t had time to do this.
SPEAKER 11 :
Nice.
SPEAKER 07 :
I got the shiny PPF because we weren’t thinking. So we put the shiny PPF on, and the downside is you can see where the PPF is because it’s more shiny than the rest of the wall because the walls are flat. So what we’re going to do is they make flat PPF. We’re going to try that. And I’m going to put that on it where you don’t notice it as much. But either way, it still has kept the walls from getting all banged up. So my point with the PPF is you can use it for a lot of things. okay um for example some of you men have ladies that wear really fancy shoes and maybe you don’t want those soles of those shoes getting all messed up and for some of you that don’t know what those shoes are just go look them up and you’ll know what i mean and they’re called red bottoms and most of you don’t even know what that is but go look them up and if you’re somebody that has a wife that wears those they don’t want that surface getting all messed up you can ppf even those, and keep those from getting all messed up. So my point is you can put PPF on pretty much anything, including your phone, your laptop, anything you would not want to get messed up, scratched, whatever, you can PPF. Am I right? Oh, you’re right.
SPEAKER 03 :
I have PPF on my laptop. You’ve seen it. Yes. On the bottom, on the top, everywhere.
SPEAKER 07 :
So instead of having it in a case, you just PPF it and off you go because it’s that protective, right? And actually you did the carbon fiber.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, the clear carbon fiber.
SPEAKER 11 :
It’s pretty cool. Yeah. So I just had one of my friends doing like a granite table in my office. Yeah, yeah. And it was kind of a dull, you know what I mean, like a matte finish. Right, right, right. So we put a piece of clear brown on top of it, a PPF. You PPF’d it. Oh, my God. It made a night and day difference.
SPEAKER 07 :
A night and day difference. For a lot of you listening. expand your thoughts on, hey, I’d like to protect X, and you might be surprised at what you actually can protect, not only car-related but even other things that you may have that you want to keep looking really nice and so on. For example, a lot of you guys at golf have really expensive drivers. that you want, other than the face, to stay really, really, you know, the face you couldn’t PPF is going to affect the way you hit the ball, but you may want to keep the rest of that driver looking really, really nice. PPF it. You can PPF literally anything that you can think of that you can put a sticky product on top of. If it’ll stick, like these walls, you can PPF it, right? Yeah, absolutely. And now you get color PPF if you want to do some fancy things. Yeah. Well, and for some of you listening, you may decide that, you know, I’ve got a particular area of the house where my kids are always writing on the walls or something along those lines. Well, okay, you’ve got the ability to PPF some of those things, and it’ll just wipe right off. It’s very, very versatile. I think it’d be safe, Roy and Dita, to say, A, its technology has come a long way from what it used to be.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah.

It comes in all sorts of different now thicknesses and shades and textures and so on, and literally just kind of imagine what you want to do, and you can probably do it. Am I right?
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah.

All right, we are back. Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Somebody asked if I ever got in trouble for putting markers on the walls once. I’m a fast learner. One good licking on my end from my dad, yeah, I didn’t do that one again. So, yeah, I only colored on the walls once, and that didn’t happen twice. So, yeah, as a kid, that didn’t happen much. And then I was the oldest, so if I learned, I passed it down to my siblings. So, yeah, I was a quick learn and passed that on to my siblings as well. So, no, we didn’t have too many issues along those lines. Rand in Northland, go ahead.
SPEAKER 18 :
I have a question. I’ve got a vehicle, all the vehicles up in the center. We’ll try to figure out a way to establish a competitive retail price on it.
SPEAKER 07 :
You’re breaking up a little bit. I think I’m getting the gist, Rand. You’re trying to establish price before you sell it or what to sell it at?
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, exactly. It’s a 2013 Camaro Supersport convertible. but it’s only got 4,400 miles on it.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 18 :
And I’m not finding any comparable vehicles to even, you know, price it against or to establish a price for myself. And the other thing is, the question would be, what are good venues to sell those cars online?
SPEAKER 07 :
On that car, you say it’s 2014?
SPEAKER 1 :
2013.
SPEAKER 07 :
2013. Camaro Supersport Convertible Black, yeah. What engine? It’s a 6.2. So it’s got the 6.2 in it. Okay. So it’s got the V8. I mean, again, mileage is going to be your biggest thing on there, and there’s a huge price range on that. What are you finding? And I haven’t looked. What are you finding on a regular one that’s got miles? What are you finding for values?
SPEAKER 18 :
Oh, you know… Of course, mileage is dependent. You know, anywhere from, you know, say if it’s got 100,000 miles, it’s probably worth, you know, 17,000. If it’s got 40,000 miles, maybe 23. But this one’s only got 4,400 miles. Right. Right.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, and the best thing to probably sell that would be auto trader. I would say something along those lines where you can get some national exposure on that. I’m thinking, and again, don’t quote me on this because I’d have to do a little bit of research on this to figure it out exactly, but I would think on that car, mid-20s.
SPEAKER 18 :
Mid-20s, okay. Okay. Because, you know, dealers offer, yeah, that’s what the dealer offered me, $25,000.
SPEAKER 07 :
You know what, if that’s the case, then they’re going to turn that car around. They’re going to try to make $2,500 to $5,000 off the car. So then if they’re willing to give you $25,000, then I probably would advertise it at like $29.99.
SPEAKER 18 :
Okay, now, I did see one on YouTube. It wasn’t in Colorado. It had 5,000 miles on it. And it sold for $35, but that was a year ago.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, and unfortunately prices have come down some, although they’re not making Camaros anymore, meaning the ones that are out there will go up in value as time goes by when they quit making them. And I also will tell you just a recap of last weekend, Mecham Auto Auction down in Glendale, so Arizona. I will tell you prices, Rand, were all over the map. Some things brought what I thought were pretty fair money. Some brought what I thought was over value on certain vehicles. And then there were some I looked at and said, man, I probably should have bought that car because that car was worth – The money. So last weekend, anyways, prices were literally all over the map. A lot of that had to do, of course, when people were actually in the hall or when they were online bidding and so on. But there was no consistency to prices last weekend whatsoever. So, you know, there’s an old saying you can always come down. You can’t go up. So if you saw one that sold at that thirty five price, I think I’d start there then. Mm hmm.
SPEAKER 18 :
Okay. And last question is that I noticed… One thing I didn’t ask as well, what color is it? Black.
SPEAKER 07 :
Because the colors on those will also matter as to their values. In other words, some people won’t buy X color car. Black’s pretty safe. That’s a color that most people can handle and even change colors on through wrapping and so on. Black’s an easy color as far as that goes. Now, have you done anything to prep it and get it ready to go? In other words, has it been paint corrected and all that handling and so on? Because whatever you spend on it, you’ll get back on the flip side.
SPEAKER 18 :
It’s been garages its whole life, and the paint’s immaculate.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. All right. Then you should be in good – yeah. In that case, if you saw one a year ago that went for $35, I think, Rand, I would – I’m going to backtrack. Instead of $29.99, go $34.99. You can always come down, start there, see what kind of response you get. If you’re not getting much in the way of interest and so on, then you know you’re too high.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah. Now, here’s something else that’s kind of funny. I paid – 47 for new, and it seems like it didn’t depreciate very much.
SPEAKER 07 :
No, it has not. It has not.
SPEAKER 18 :
Is there a reason for that?
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, like I said, when they stop making them, that helped their values because you can’t go buy a new one. Anytime you can go buy a new one, it affects the price of the used ones because somebody can go buy a new instead of used. But when they’re not there anymore and somebody wants that car, you’re going to the used market. You have no choice. That pushes the used values up.
SPEAKER 18 :
Okay. And then one last question. I noticed when I was shooting pictures, I’d never noticed this before, there was about a quarter-sized little dent right above the rear tire directly at the top. And I couldn’t even notice it. I’m wondering, is that something I should have taken care of?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, Roy can PDR that. You know, they paintless dent remove that and can paint correct that afterwards so that you won’t even know that it was ever there. And if you want top, top, top dollar, yes, fix that. Yeah. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 18 :
And then one other thing, there was a little, about a three-quarter inch road rash on just one of the wheels.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, fix that too.
SPEAKER 18 :
That’s something I need to resolve.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 18 :
And what would I do?
SPEAKER 07 :
Roy can help you with that also. Roy can do all that. Yeah, and those are things, Rand, and for everybody listening, if you’ve got this kind of a car and you’re trying to get top, top, top dollar, you cannot have a blemish anywhere, period. Because what will happen is they’ll come around and say, you know, it’s got this and it’s got that. I need you to take $1,000 off or more.
SPEAKER 18 :
Okay. If I brought that in, how long would they have to have the car for?
SPEAKER 11 :
Well, it depends. I mean, just give us a call. I mean, make an appointment as we look at it. Yeah, put it on schedule. We look at it, and then we go from there.
SPEAKER 18 :
Okay. Well, I appreciate all your help.
SPEAKER 07 :
Rand, knowing the wheel and so on, I’d plan on a week if it were me.
SPEAKER 18 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
Just kind of knowing that world and how it works, getting the wheel done and so on, plan on a week.
SPEAKER 18 :

You betcha, Rand. No, appreciate it. And, yes, that’s a great car. Get your top dollar out of that. Get it over to Roy and Dietze and get those things dialed in, and that way you get top dollar out of it. Bill, go ahead.

I got two questions for you. When you donate a car, say I donate it to veterans. Uh-huh. What kind of write-off is that? I thought it was a dollar for dollar, and someone told me it wasn’t. You’ve got to put it in with the IRS’s formula and whatever it comes out to.
SPEAKER 07 :
Two ways to do that that I would do is, A, you can claim whatever you feel the value is, but it has to be a reasonable value. No, there is no IRS form for that. If you get an appraisal on the car and it’s a $5,000 car, let’s say that you donate off, then you’re going to get your $5,000 value. You have to prove the value is the point.
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, that’s what I thought. Okay. Okay, and then here’s a second question. My son brought it up because I’ve been going round and round with the batteries because, you know, I don’t drive that much. Okay. I go on vacation for two weeks. Do you come back to a dead battery?
SPEAKER 07 :
What vehicle?
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, I would say on my Colorado.
SPEAKER 07 :
No, you’ll be okay with two weeks on that one. Especially if you drive it to the airport, you’ll be fine.
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, what if you just leave it in the driver? Because, you know, everybody’s saying, well, drive it two or three times a week.
SPEAKER 07 :
On that car, if you’re driving it to the airport, coming back 10, 14 days later, it’ll fire up and run. You’ll be fine. Okay. Okay, that’s it. You won’t have any issues. You’ll be all right. All right, we are back. Rush to Reason, Devers Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Time of the week, Richard, where we do a car review. You recently drove a 2025 Hyundai Kona. Talk about that.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, Dad, so this is Hyundai’s small SUV, right? It’s definitely smaller. It can fit four full-size adults. That second row is going to be a little bit tight. No big deal, though. It does fit two kids. We’ll talk about that a little bit later in the review, but if I don’t, it does fit two kids with a booster seat, Dad. This is one of my more favorite cars because, in my opinion, it has a great value proposition, right? The one we drove was the Limited. It was about $35,000, $36,000. It’s got an upgraded turbocharged engine on it and all-wheel drive, which is available as part of this vehicle. And so especially at our altitude, Dad, right, sometimes the four-cylinder engines or even the naturally aspirated and some of the larger engines, they don’t do too well, right? They’re just not as much oxygen. This little turbocharged engine was fantastic. It was fun to drive. Is it going to win any races? No, it’s not. But is it going to get you what you need to do? Is it going to merge into traffic? And can you do so safely without having to kind of get on the – you know, get on the pedal and mash and be like, come on, go, go, go. And the answer is no. This thing’s going to do what you need it to. It’s got a lot of tech features that are standard on it, a lot of infotainment features that I think a lot of people will like, and just a lot of nice apportionments throughout the cab, Dad, that I think some people would be surprised by, to be honest with you, especially if they haven’t driven a Hyundai in some time. It’s a car that was remodeled for 2024, so this is the second generation of it. It looks great. They’ve done some updated styling. I encourage folks to check it out. There’s also an electric version of this car, Dad, which that’s not what we drove. Again, we drove the typical combustion engine, right, as far as the turbocharged four-cylinder. But outside of that, Dad, it handled really well. It’s got a lot of feature comforts that I think you’d like. It’s got a lot of safety features. And we talk about this a lot, and I don’t have the Monrovia in front of me. One of the benefits of Hyundai, Dad, and kind of their brand – is the value that you get with the warranty, right? I believe it’s a 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty on the powertrain, if I’m not mistaken. They’ve also got, I think, a five-year 60 that covers the whole car. And I apologize if I’m not getting those correct. But overall, it’s just something where if you’re wanting, if you want to have the backing of the manufacturer when you purchase a vehicle, this may be the vehicle for you, right? You don’t want to have to mess with it. I also think they’ve got some other programs as far as, some of the basic maintenance and stuff that’s available to it. Again, I would encourage folks to check this out, Dad. And you’ve driven this car, obviously, other models or the older ones. But I think when you and I both drove this car several years ago, I think our comments were similar, which is this is really a great value for the money.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, again, for those of you that are in the market for that, I guess you could say, Richard, smaller SUV because that’s exactly what this is. The Kona is an SUV. They’ve got, by the way, really quick for those of you listening, some great deals on this right now. What I mean by that is some money off or cheap interest rates or whatever the case may be, whatever you’re looking to do. But, yeah, for those of you that are looking for a car that is in that – How should I say this, Richard? Twenty five to thirty five thousand dollar range max. Really, it’s more like a mid 20s to low 30s. If you’re looking for something along those lines in a vehicle that, you know, is this going to be for a family of four? Probably not. Could this work for a family of three or especially a family of two? Absolutely. And if you’re just looking for a daily go to work to and from, it’s usually just you. You want to be able to fold the seats down and reconfigure things accordingly. Is this a vehicle that would work for that particular situation? Absolutely.

Again, I would 100% agree with everything that you just said. Again, can you get the kids to and from school on this? Yes, you can. You even got a little car room in the back. Is it the biggest SUV out there? No, it’s not, but it’s not meant to be. This is great for an urban environment. You can fit this car anywhere. You can pull it into some tight spots at the supermarket or in downtown without worry. And like you said, the other thing I would factor in is they are really running some great specials on this, and obviously that’s going to vary by area and availability. But, again, Dad, you can get a brand-new car that is an SUV. And, again, in Colorado, folks, all-wheel drive, you can get for – because an all-wheel drive, by the way, is available on every model, Dad, right? You don’t have to get the Limited, which is the top of the line for us. So to your point, you can get a SUV, Grant, on the smaller side, an SUV with all-wheel drive for less than $30,000 depending on how you configure it. So we encourage folks, check this out. And I recognize that a lot of these newer rigs are GPSed, and they’re constantly feeding data to the factories themselves. My concern is how do I make sure that they’re not selling it to the insurance or someplace else? Isn’t there a way to cut that down? And Nine News had an article on that today, too.
SPEAKER 07 :
I mean, I think even despite what they might tell you, good luck. In other words, I think even if they’re telling us, yeah, you can opt out of this, you can opt out of that, Mike, I guarantee you at the end of the day they’re still selling that info.
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, that wouldn’t surprise me. I mean, as I was talking to Larry, they know everything about us already for crowd out loud. And it’s, you know, I’m like, okay, this is just another one. And so… That wouldn’t surprise me. Now, on one of my vehicles, it has a thing where you can cut that off. I don’t believe that, like you said. I don’t buy into that. But anyway, well, that’s… I don’t buy it.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, and part of that, Mike, I’m going off of because, you know, GM had a big, huge settlement they had to pay out because they were selling all of the OnStar data, which they weren’t supposed to be doing. There was a big breach of that. And so at the end of the day, I mean, I don’t care what any of these people say. They’re all still making money off of your data, period.
SPEAKER 12 :
Oh, yeah. Yeah. No, I… And it’s going to get worse. Yeah. Yeah, I get it. I just… I get so tired of, you know, I just like to have a little privacy in my life.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, and especially when it comes to, you know, some of the cars that I know you own and I own and so on. It’s like you really don’t need to know what I’m doing. It’s not your business.
SPEAKER 12 :
No, no, it’s none of your business. And I’m probably doing it better than anybody else would do it anyway.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right, but at the end of the day, the point is they’re retrieving data from you that they are now making money off of. And it’s you. It’s your car. You own it and so on.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, no, I agree. It’s my data.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, that’s right. Now, I will say this. One thing that Tesla has made very clear is you essentially are leasing their car and their info and so on. It’s a lot like a software agreement that you click a little box and say, I agree. When you buy a Tesla, that’s what you’re doing, and he is collecting your data, and he makes it very clear that he is.

Well, I mean, at least he’s making it clear.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, he’s telling you, I’m going to sell your data, because that’s what he’s doing with it.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah. Well, that answers my question.

Really quick, Mike. That’s why people don’t understand. That’s why all these people that are mad are just morons. Tesla’s not a car company. They’re a data collection company.

I’m glad you asked. And I wondered if Mecham is in the same caliber. No.
SPEAKER 07 :
No, and I kind of knew that going into it, but I still wanted to go. I’ve been there on Mecham on the media side several times, even when they were here in Denver, but I’ve never really been to the auction as a buyer, so I had an opportunity to go. My good friends from Novus went with me, and we had a good time, so I really enjoyed the experience, Kent and Judy. We had a blast, and it was a lot of fun, and learned a lot, Buck, when it was all said and done. And no, it is not Barrett-Jackson, and I’ll just be straight-up honest. If I could get inside of Mecham and sit down for a few hours and have a conversation with them, I could help them improve their overall auction experience with all of their people attending and probably help them make a lot more money than they actually are making. And I don’t know whether they’re ever willing to sit down and do that, but they could make that experience a lot better. Now, here’s how I’d explain this. Is it still a good experience? Yes. Was it still a lot of fun? Yes. Is it Barrett-Jackson? Absolutely, positively not. Barrett-Jackson is like going to Disney World. where everything is dialed in, done right. I mean, everything in its place. And you, Ben, you know what I’m talking about. It is the ultimate experience you’re going to have when you go to an auction like that, with, by the way, all of the top-end attendees also there. Now, I would compare Mecham to Six Flags. Still a good experience. You can still go and have a lot of fun. You can still take your family along. But is it Disney World? No, it is not.
SPEAKER 16 :
Now, if you were going to sell a vehicle, which would you choose? It appears to me, and just cursory looking at both, that the overall price at Barrett-Jackson… is higher than it is at Meco.
SPEAKER 07 :
Typically. Now, I would answer that with a, that depends, Buck. And everybody listening, please hear me out, because some of you have higher-end cars you’re looking to sell. In fact, that Camaro a moment ago would be one of those, which, by the way, as far as that Camaro goes, make sure you call the guys up at Ridgeline Auto Brokers, because those are cars that they could easily consign, and you wouldn’t even have to mess with the sale of yourself. Go see Roy, get it all dialed in, then go see the guys at Ridgeline and get it sold that way. But, Buck, here’s what I say where it depends. A lot of these auctions, Barrett-Jackson included, has a lot to do with when is that car going across the auction block. And let me explain. And since you’ve been there, you kind of know this, but everybody else out there listening does not. Even at Barrett-Jackson, if you’ve got a really, really nice car, and it’s rolling through there on, say, a Friday morning at 10 or a Saturday morning at 10, the level of people there to actually get engaged in bidding on that car are not the same as it would be at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. on each one of those cars because the attendees just aren’t there because the fact of the matter is a lot of people go out and party at those things and they are not up in the morning and they’re not there that early. Some of the hardcore car guys are, but a lot of your big money guys are big money partiers as well, Buck, and they are just not there that early in the morning to actually bid on said car. So a lot of this at either auction is going to come down to can you make an agreement with them on when this thing is going to enter the auction and at what time, and I know that they can’t get exact, but they can get pretty close on the lot number as to where that thing is going to land coming across the auction block. And I think Buck on either auction, in other words, if I had a choice of being at Barrett-Jackson at 10 a.m. or being at Mecham on Friday night at 3, I can tell you which one I would choose. That would be Mecham on a Friday at 3. You’re still going to get a higher price there than you will Barrett-Jackson at 10 a.m.
SPEAKER 16 :
I kind of assumed that. I also gathered from Barrett-Jackson, they sell cars, I don’t know, Monday, Tuesday. If you’re selling cars Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday, they’re not going to bring near as much money as they will Friday or Saturday.
SPEAKER 07 :
Goes back down to where are you going to land inside of the auction itself. And, of course, the way these auctions all look at it is if you’ve got a more desirable car, So you’ve got a 70 Chevelle LS6 car that’s extremely rare and very desirable. You can probably pick your time as when you want that car to go across the auction block. If you’re taking in a 32 Ford Highboy where they’re a dime a dozen, good luck because you’re just going to get placed wherever.
SPEAKER 16 :
Now, what is the charge at Mecham’s? Barrett-Jackson…
SPEAKER 07 :
has a fairly high buyer fee with no reserve thank you that’s another big difference buck barrett-jackson for all of you listening no reserve unless you have a million dollar or more car then if you have that you can put a reserve on it because it’s such a high value car but under a million bucks there’s no reserve at barrett-jackson whatever it sells for it sells for itself for now there’s a plus to that because people there that are bidding knows this car is going to sell no matter what and they’re liable to keep bidding because they know wherever the top dollar lands they’re going to own the car at the end of the day Mecham, on the other hand, they do reserves, which I think, by the way, is a big mistake on their part. And let me explain. What a lot of those sellers will do, Buck, is they’ll bring a car in, and they want to put a $50,000 reserve on the car. And so they let the bidding get up to about $40,000 to $45,000. They then start having this banter because Mecham, and I think Barrett Jackson’s saying, you need to be in person as your car is selling because if they’ve got questions or they want to, in this case, get the reserve off of the car, they can now start having this debate. And what these sellers will do at Mecham, and they kind of play the game because Mecham lets them, they’ll get the car up to, say, 45. They know they want to get at least 50 out of it because that’s a reserve. They start battling back and forth. What they will say then is, hey, you know what? commission. Mecham then thinks, well, wait a minute. If I get the reserve off, I at least get my 10% out of the buyer. 10 is better than none because otherwise I’m not even going to get the 18. I’m getting zero if the car doesn’t sell. So, okay, we’ll go ahead and let you, Buck, sell that car at no commission. And that’s what these sellers will play that game at on the auction block at Mecham. That’s not happening at Barrett-Jackson.
SPEAKER 16 :

And that’s what I learned last weekend that I wouldn’t have not known otherwise, Buck, and that’s what some of these guys at Mecham are doing again. Like I said, if I had a couple of hours with Mecham and the guys there and how they’re running things, I could improve their bottom line immensely. I doubt they want to hear from me, though. sometimes the truth is is not wanted exactly but that’s how the two auctions work so for a lot of you guys that have some cars that you may think you could do better at auction than you would be selling in the open market and you might be right you still buck have to look at all these other little idiosyncrasies at either auction because a lot of it really does boil down to when is that thing going across the block
SPEAKER 16 :
But if you just want to go and maybe buy something, but have a good time, Barrett-Jackson’s the place to go.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, I had a good time even at Mecham, and there were some good buys at Mecham, Buck. Honestly, in fact, if you’re a guy that’s looking to buy a car, maybe keep it, flip it, do whatever, there’s good deals at both. So I’m not going to say that there’s not on that level. There’s just far more cars at Barrett-Jackson than there is at Mecham.
SPEAKER 16 :
Okay, well, I was thinking of the experience like taking my wife. If you’re a car guy, either place, like I am, either place, I’d have a great time.
SPEAKER 08 :
You would. You would, yes.
SPEAKER 16 :
I was really surprised. I took my wife to Barrett-Jackson, and she’s not a car gal, and she really enjoyed it and wants to go back. And I’m going to guess if we went to Maycomb’s, She wouldn’t enjoy it and wouldn’t have the urge.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, I can just tell you that even both of our wives that went with us, I think Kent and I had a lot better time than our wives had just because of everything that you just said. So there you go. So you are correct.

But are there things they could do to improve the overall experience? You know, absolutely. If they ever wanted to sit down and chat, I’d be more than willing to do that. I have a couple, three things that have worked very well for me when I detail my own cars, which is, I mean, just the sort of thing that you can do on your own. Murphy’s oil soap. It’s a surprisingly good cleaner for dashboards and plastic panels. It takes the gunk off. It’s very gentle. It doesn’t hurt your hands or anything else. And you can use one of those yellow foam sponges that comes out of Adobe when the outer case is worn away, because that’s just about the right kind of sponge for it. Then if you want to, you can rinse it really thoroughly and get a little bit more dirt off, or you can leave it just after the first wash. and just let the oil stay on the plastic. It helps it look a lot better, really. And I was actually taught by old body men back in the 90s that you could use baby oil on vinyl. Any sort of vinyl sides of the seats, vinyl… even plastic dashboards and such, just a very thin coat of baby oil will allow it to soak that in and then wipe off the excess after a while. Never done that. It will look a lot better.

Interesting. I’ve never used that. There’s a different kind of product I use that works really well. I’ve never done the baby oil.

Baby oil with simple, basically neutral mineral spirits without any particular, all the esters.

Which is what you’d want. That’s perfect. Yeah, great idea.

It’s dirt cheap, too.

You don’t want your car smelling like a baby’s.

And with that spray-away, that foaming window cleaner, they’re the bomb for interiors. And it’s amazing how much gunk they get off of them. Oh, yeah. And if you have a real lot of gunk on the interior, what you can do is get a brand-new one of those Mr. Clean eraser sponges. There you go.

Just a marked-up spot. But don’t get an old one because they harden, and you don’t want to scratch your glass or your film. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. So I will say it does you a lot of good to have a clean car. Anybody with a dirty car walking around with gunk on the carpet, gunk on the walls, and the dashboard all dusty and smeared, they have no pride in the vehicle. First thing, if you were thinking of taking that car as a trade-in or as buying it, you run like hell if you see all that.
SPEAKER 07 :
You are 100% correct. People don’t realize how much, Roy was talking about this during the break, how much more money you get out of a car by having it all clean, detailed, ready to go when you go to sell it.
SPEAKER 17 :
Well, the kind of person who takes care of a car’s interior is going to drive carefully because he likes his vehicle and he doesn’t want anything bad to happen to it.
SPEAKER 07 :

I’ve had people walk up to me in the house and just try to buy that 93 Saturn sitting in the driveway because they’re too eager for a small wagon.

Yep.

Which is a hole in the market. Somebody’s got to fill again. I mean, the SUVs are the, what do they call those things, the hybrid, the little, what they’re calling the little SUVs these days. They’re still too high for the kind of people who want a little wagon that they can carry the luggage to the airport back or the lawnmower to the shop and that sort of stuff. Volkswagen’s still got that Jetta wagon and there’s the Subarus, but just a cheap, well-made, simple little wagon would be a very good seller, I think.

Yep. I can’t disagree with that at all, 100%.

Sure. I’ve been doing Barrett-Jackson and Mecham for a long time. The difference between the two, for me anyways, is collectors are at Barrett-Jackson. And Mecham, it’s more of the average guy buying a vehicle.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, I wouldn’t disagree with that. There were a few high-end cars that went at Mecham that they probably solicited and got a few buyers in to look at that million-dollar plus car, Dan, as you know, because that helps their viewership, if you would, when they have some of those high-end cars go through. And they will be out even soliciting some of those guys to come and sell with them than having them go to Barrett-Jackson or whatever. But, yeah, I would agree with you. What I was going to say is there’s more of the – Everyday Joe at Mecham, where Barrett has more of your higher-end buyers and even attendees, if you would.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah. Let me give you an example that just happened this year at Barrett-Jackson. They had a C6 Corvette, red, black interior, plain Jane. Yep, saw it. Half-wheel covers. I mean, just really a plain, plain car. No special VIN number. It had 61 miles on it. This is Barrett Jackson. It took off, and it got up to $100,000. Then it slowed down. And then it took off with two guys, just two guys bidding. Those are collectors. And it sold for $300,000, okay, with a 10% buyer on top. So you’re $330,000 for a regular C6. And that’s what happens. You pick out cars in the catalog, if you sign up and you’ve got the catalog and you’re a bidder, and you go down there and you go, I’m buying that car. And all of a sudden the car goes for $60,000, $70,000 above what you were willing to top out at. And that does happen. The other thing that does happen is a stallout. And that is where you show up with your car, and let’s say the car for purposes is worth $100,000. And remember, it’s all, everything, there’s no reserve at Barry Jackson. And the car stalls out at 50,000. Your car is going to be sold at $50,000 even though it’s worth $100,000. Now, that doesn’t happen an awful lot. But what you’ve got to do, you have to protect yourself. Whereas at Mecham, you’ve got the reserve. You’ve got to have another bidder in the audience that’s going to buy your car for you.
SPEAKER 07 :
So you can get it back from him even though you’re paying that 8% or whatever it is. You’re better off that than losing out.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, 18%.

Yep.
SPEAKER 14 :
To go and put it in and pay for it.

Take it back out. That’s right. Yeah. No, you’re right. Yeah, it’s 18%. Sorry. Yes, you’re correct. 18%, not 8%. 18%, yes.

So it’s a big game. Yep. I really like Barrett-Jackson. There’s no comparison. But, boy, I’ll tell you what, when you’re buying or selling, you better know what you’re doing. Mecham, you can put the car in and, you know, this is the commission and whatever. You know, it’s no big deal. But this past year, Barrett-Jackson, the cars were below what they normally brought. But what is really on fire are trucks.
