Hey, I just returned from the South. I was in Nashville, and I was in Louisville, Kentucky, which everyone that wasn’t from Louisville called it Louisville or Louisville, and I’m like, it’s Louisville. And they’re like, I mean, I’m not even saying, I say it perfectly, but I know it’s not Louisville. But I just want to say, you people in the South are legit so nice. People in the South, I’ve never had so many doors held for me. And one guy dropped the door in my face, and I turned to the person that I was with. I said, I’ll guarantee you that guy’s not from Kentucky. When I was in Kentucky, I said, he is not from here. And the driver that was driving me in the van or whatever from the hotel, Cindy, she goes, no, he’s not. No, he’s not.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, I remember the first time I went to New York City when I was a teenager, a young college student. And I’m doing what I grew up in Oklahoma doing my whole life. How are you, sir? Good to see you guys, everything. Let me get that door for you, whatever. And people thought I was crazy, you know, absolutely crazy. And, you know, I mean, I had a cop on the street tell me, you can’t just stop and talk to people like that. And because, you know, people get away from you. What a sad deal, because… You know, it’s just here everybody’s your friend until you prove you’re not friendly.
SPEAKER 06 :
And when you go to the grocery store, the aisles, like, you can’t even, like, look at all the cereal boxes. It says people, neighbors, friends, churchgoers are stopping to talk to each other in the aisles. And they’re just, you know, how’s Sally? Oh, your mom. Oh, she needed that new ramp for a wheelchair. Oh, a bunch of us are doing it on Saturday. I’ll be over to help. Like, it’s just, I love it. I cannot wait for my daughter to move to Henderson outside, in between Nashville and Memphis for Christmas. Christian school education because I just enjoy the people down there so much. But I digress. We’re talking about your column, Theories for Thought. What are you teaching us this week?
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, everybody I know that has become successful in anything, they have a motto, a creed, they have words that they live by. And, you know, whether you’re a person of faith or you’re an athlete or you’re a business person, you need to know what is it that drives you. You need to reduce that. I mean, even in the scriptures when they approached Jesus and said, what’s the most important thing? And they were trying to trap him, but he said, here’s what you need to know. Love God and treat your neighbor like yourself.
SPEAKER 05 :
Oh, I love it.
SPEAKER 04 :
I mean, and I got to tell you, anybody, if you don’t have a creed to live by, treat everybody the way you’d like to get treated, and you’ve got plenty to worry about the rest of your life. And I think people who succeed have that. For me in business, I always tell my colleagues, we succeed when we create value for other people. So forget yourself. It’s not about us. Let’s go find some people and create value for them, and we’ll get all we want. And that’s our key to success right there. I mean, We succeed when we create value for other people. So what I’m talking about is having a theory, having words that you live by, a code, a creed, whatever it is. And everybody I’ve ever seen that’s reached the top of their profession and has become successful, if you’ll ask them, they’ll tell you the words they live by.
SPEAKER 06 :
I I the in terms of, you know, you know, advice that you give people, this seems to be something a lot of people turn to you for as we’re talking about theories for thought. And. What are some of the most common things? I’m curious, and I love to digress with you because I’m just so interested in what you talk about. What are some of the most common things that people ask you for advice about besides money?
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, I think people want to be in a relationship. People want to be in physical shape. And, you know, the psychology today has done a survey for the well, my whole adult life. And I remember they did it when I was in college. Like, what are the number one things? And it’s always get rich, be in love, get in shape. Those are kind of the top three all the time. And stay healthy. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And those are things people want to do. And, you know, so I think that I just answered a young lady from India this morning, and she wanted to know if I thought there was a one true love for everybody out there or whatever. You found yours. Yeah. She said, I feel like I’m behind my peers on finding my soulmate. I said, first of all, don’t ever compare yourself to anybody. And I told her there are three states of being. One is being in a great relationship. The second best thing is to be happy alone, and the worst place you can be is in a bad relationship. Oh, yes. Don’t slip out of second place and go to third. Right. I mean, find the right person or don’t. And I told her about the poster in my office at home that my staff bought me. Three dozen attributes of success, but number one is marry the right person. So you’ve got to find that thing. And so those are the questions people generally want to ask about is, you know, they want to get rich, they want to be in love, they want to be in shape. And those are the things that seem to motivate people. And those are, you know, I think 500 years from now, it’ll be the same thing. People always struggle with those things. And there’s plenty to struggle with. It’s not easy.
SPEAKER 06 :
You know, when you talk in this column, Theories for Thought, about the Four Agreements, and I don’t read nearly, I mean, you read a book a day. I’m lucky to get in maybe one a month. But I have to admit, I do listen to a lot of history podcasts every night. But the Four Agreements is such a wonderful book. Number one, be impeccable with your word. Two, never assume anything. Three, don’t take anything personally. That was a big one for me to learn. And number four, always do your best. My daughter just watched a movie and it’s like the life list or something like that. And she said it was sad, but she said it was life changing for me, mom, because it’s about how every day you can do your best to be your best. I said, oh, that reminds me of my friend, Jim. He said, what would you do next if you were amazing?
SPEAKER 04 :
She goes, yeah, that’s it. Miguel Ruiz wrote that book, The Four Agreements. I would recommend it to anybody. But he takes it further than we’re used to in those things. When he talks about doing your best, everybody thinks they’re doing their best until they’re called on to do a little better, and then a little better after that, and a little better after that. And there’s always more in your reserve. So that’s why Coach Wooden’s advice, what would you do right now if you were amazing? And that’s a pretty good place to start. And, you know, so, yeah, I know people that live by, you know, they want to be impeccable with their word. That’s a great goal to live. It’s a great way to live your life. But that goes beyond just telling the truth or not telling lies. You know, being impeccable is to communicate with others in a way they can depend upon you. You’re reliable. You are known for that. and uh so i i highly recommend those but you know the the theories for thought is always about the you know what is it that drives you and you should be able to articulate it very simply to someone because it should be that that part of your life and you know and like i said if you don’t have another one do unto others as you would like them to do unto you is a great place to be that is what that that’s on like i i love that i put that i’ve put that scripture up on

Oh, thank you. Thank you. All right, so let’s start off with why is it important to you that we recognize Earth Day?

Well, if you didn’t know, and you did say that, but I got the chance to perform next to a lot of amazing stars like Gwyneth Paltrow and Jane Lynch. on Glee and also Beyonce on her world tour. Cool. I know. I feel cool saying it out loud, but I’ll tell you one of my favorite roles is actually spreading the word about the environment. I’m so lucky I get to do this. So with climate change, the need for action is greater than ever as we’re learning. So simple things we can do to help, like recycling, reusing, turning off those lights, but supporting environmentally friendly products are really going to help us do our part.

You know, I was listening, Heather, at the beginning when you were talking about being on Glee and the other cool things that you’ve done. And one of the girls, women, I should say, Aisha Bowe, they were talking about how she was told when she was young, your dream, your dreams are too big. And she’s an aerospace engineer and just, you know, a real brainy chick. And so they were kind of saying like, you know, you’re never tell, you know, a girl, a person, their dreams are too big and your dreams have really come true in a lot of ways. So what are some of the highlights of what you’ve done and what’s next for you?
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, first of all, thank you for saying that. I really appreciate it. Second of all, I am so proud of her because that is huge. She can show all of us that she can go to the darn space. She can go to the furthest part of the world and back and own it. That’s the coolest part and I think that’s kind of how I grew up was my parents never gave me advice on dancing. They just supported me in the most loving way and allowed me to do it because I loved it. That was always the answer was like, do you love this? And if you don’t, don’t do it. And so it was instilled in me in a young age to love whatever I’m doing. And so with dance and with acting, I’m always like making sure I’m still in love with it. And I think when you’re leading with that love, it is going to translate to, you know, these younger generations, your audience is going to feel it. And so I always just lead with that that love for whatever I’m doing.

Hey, Angie Austin here with the good news. Well, that was fun to talk to Jim Stovall. I always learn lessons from him. And, of course, getting to talk to a Hollywood star is always fun as well with Heather Morris and talking about some of the dreams she’s achieved. And then, of course, we talked about the rocket today with the six women and how exciting. That was just fun to watch. I just enjoyed that and listening to their screams, too, when they had some fun. You know, like the landing and other things, I think, just take you by surprise. I just need to hear from Gayle King about overcoming her fears, you know, of doing something like that and how she now feels like she can do, you know, anything. You know, Jim talked about, oh, and I’ve got some last minute tax advice coming up as we head into tax day. in just a few minutes. But Jim talked about Don Miguel Ruiz’s wisdom in his book, The Four Agreements. And it’s a book that I really enjoyed and got a lot out of. So I just kind of wanted to touch on The Four Agreements. My dad always talked about being impeccable with your word after we reunited after all those years. And he lost so many years with his children and his family. But We ended up with eight good years there at the end. And he was such a good role model for my children as a sober grandpa who had really achieved so many things in his life. I mean, he really was brilliant. He had his PhD, did Tai Chi every day. He played chess every day. He read a lot of books and he reached out a lot in the community and taught so many people in his community at the university. He was a professor and he taught Tai Chi right up until pretty much the end of his life. He i think did tai chi yeah pretty much until he was hospitalized right when he you know was uh saying goodbye per se all right so the four agreements by don miguel ruiz that’s something jim highly recommends and i’ve taken so much wisdom from jim i call him a mentor, which of course he is to me. Don Miguel Ruiz’s four agreements offer a practical code of conduct based on Toltec wisdom to transform life and achieve freedom, love, and happiness. And this goes along with my Christian faith. And these are the lessons. Be impeccable with your word, which I think is all about, you know, honesty being the best policy and, you know, really speaking with integrity. Don’t take anything personally. That was a big one for me because I often did that. And so many things aren’t about you. I mean, People are fairly narcissistic. Usually they’re not doing things that are about you. It usually has something to do with them. I used to work with a weatherman and he’d be kind of broody and not in a great mood sometimes. And I thought this somehow I’d make him angry. And he said once, Angie, it’s not all about you. And I was like, oh, wait, so this has nothing to do with me. Don’t make assumptions. And there you go. I was making assumptions. And always do your best. By consistently applying these agreements, individuals can improve in communication and reduce suffering, and cultivate a life of greater joy and fulfillment. Here’s a more detailed look at each agreement and its implications. The one that my dad always said, be impeccable with your word. This emphasizes speaking with integrity, honesty, and clarity, which I think is so important for us to teach our children and for us to show them by example of us doing the same thing, being impeccable with our word. It means using your word to create a positive and loving world rather than dwelling on negativity or gossip. And I think as Christians, you know, like as a Christian, I too feel like my actions are so important to set, you know, a good example. And I’m sure I fall short of that on many occasions. But I really do try to speak with integrity and honesty. Don’t take anything personally. That’s the second lesson. This agreement helps understand that others’ actions and words are reflections of their own perceptions and beliefs, not necessarily about you. It encourages you to detach from their emotions and focus on your own well-being. And just to not be so full of yourself that you think everything’s about you. Just don’t take it personally. And don’t make assumptions. That’s the next one, number three. This highlights the importance of asking questions and communicating clearly To avoid misunderstandings and unnecessary drama. Don’t you have a friend that’s into all kinds of unnecessary drama? It’s such a waste of energy. I was just with a bunch of my girlfriends in Nashville, and we all visited also in Arizona about a month ago. We had two really nice trips. They’re my old friends from NBC in Los Angeles. And we talked about one of our friends that we still really love, but traveling with her is so difficult because it’s just her… her life is like a tornado of unnecessary drama and it’s never changed there’s always drama and a lot of it she just creates it’s so unnecessary and it just drains your life so don’t make assumptions don’t communicate clearly don’t create unnecessary drama by actively seeking clarification you create a more authentic and meaningful connection with others So seek clarification if you’re not sure and always do your best. This agreement emphasizes that your best is all you can give in any situation and encourages you to be present, authentic, and avoid self-judgment as you are doing your best under the circumstances. By embracing these agreements, you can transform your beliefs and your actions, fostering better relationships. Pardon me, reducing needless suffering and cultivating a life filled with purpose and fulfillment. And again, I just really like the four agreements. So I thought I’d share a little bit more of that since Jim emphasized that today as well. Okay, here is some great advice for you. Really, I’m thrilled to have you. Some expert last minute tax advice. Mark Stieber is joining us. Mark is the chief tax officer with Jackson Hewitt Tax Services. Welcome, Mark. Good day. Very exciting time. Good to be here.
SPEAKER 05 :
It is actually. I’m all ready to roll. So let’s talk about some of the top tips for some of the last minute filers.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, that’s a large bucket of people because there’s tens of millions of people who wait to this time every year, which is not really a financial best practice, but it is certainly a thing. So I’ll simply say with the waning hours in front of us, make every use of what remaining time you have, depending on when you’re listening to this and do not miss the deadline. There’s penalties and other risks. That being said, don’t rush so much to not hit the deadline that you don’t get organized. You guesstimate or estimate because accuracy matters. And more importantly, you hurry and you leave something off in the way of a benefit or make a mistake that causes another downstream error later. So be organized. Find your documents. Find you a trusted, experienced professional. If you waited this late, you probably should get some help. And simply commit to a deadline of getting it done in the next time that you have. Don’t put it off any longer. Don’t extend unless you must. And simply start to look towards 25 because 2024 is over and it’s time to wrap that up and put a bow on it. You know, when you talk about…
SPEAKER 05 :
you know, getting expert help, you know, whether you’re late or not, you know, I’ve, you know, I went to college, I’ve done very well in my careers. And I always get expert help because I find things change so often. Different things happen each year. I might have thought something could be written off, and I realized it can’t. Or maybe it used to be able to be written off, and now it can’t. So expert help, I think, regardless of how much you think you know. I did actually get help one year from my brother who graduated in the top 1% of his class at West Point Military Academy. It’s the only year. But I actually got a letter from the IRS saying that I didn’t claim something that I should have claimed in terms of a retirement account or some investment account or something. And I’m like, oh, great. The one time I didn’t get expert help.
SPEAKER 03 :
That’s more common than you think. And especially as the IRS and states in particular have gotten more sophisticated with their data matching, you know, specificity or specificity and accuracy matter now more than ever. You know, you can’t guesstimate that small job that you had or that side hustle income that you got paid through that third party app. or that gaming income that you didn’t claim because that was just a small win in Vegas. The accuracy matters because the IRS has that data. And you may not go to jail or even get audited, but you’re likely to get a question. Then you’re going to have to deal with that. So be accurate. Locate all your documents. If you didn’t get it, that doesn’t mean you just get to leave it off. You have to put that on there because odds are the IRS has it. And as you say, taxes change, laws change, life changes actually more than tax law changes. And the mistake you make might not lead yourself to jail or an audit, but you can cost yourself money. And that’s probably the bigger crime, in my opinion, leaving off a credit or leaving off a benefit that could be worth $500 or $1,000. And you’re never going to see that money. And a pro can help ensure that. Plus, they can help reduce stress. So I know at Jackson Hewitt, we’re pro, pro, but we also have self-prep. We recognize that, but it’s not for everybody. And sooner or later, you may have an issue that’s so big, you’re going to need some help. And we’re here for that.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, I’ve found in my dealings with the experts that it definitely pays for what you pay for the service. It more than pays in the tax benefits, et cetera, for sure. And let’s talk a little bit about, you know, natural disasters. Will your tax return differ? Do you get more time? Do you get more benefits like Let’s talk about someone who’s been affected by a natural disaster. You know, I don’t know what this is considered under, but I’m assuming it’s a natural disaster. Many of my friends, I work for NBC4 in Los Angeles, and I know a lot of people who lost homes in the fires there. It was just catastrophic. So let’s say a natural disaster. How does that tax return differ?
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, much like tax professionals, not all tax professionals are the same. Much like disasters, not all disasters are the same. The disaster that has tax benefit are generally your federally declared disaster. And you know it if you’ve been in one, your California point. I live in Florida, hurricanes, other places that have had flooding or what have you. But a federally declared disaster, which is declared by the administration or FEMA, has a whole host of benefits. The top shelf ones that you see are more time to file, an extension of time to send in your tax returns. And while that is a true benefit, you got extra time, I have found it’s a false benefit. Many people have gotten their lives in order, and that’s most important, and they’ve gotten their families back in order, and they’ve taken care of the important priorities, but then they’ve got this extra time on their hands, and they think, well, I’ll just file my taxes way later, when in the reality of it is, if you’re in a federally declared disaster area, there’s a whole bunch of other tax benefits that are yours, especially if you’ve suffered economic loss. They start with being able to claim an economic loss on your tax return and reducing your tax. A second benefit You can carry that loss backwards and get prior taxes. A third benefit, those returns are prioritized and you have to do it right and put the disaster and some information on your return. But the IRS will quick jump that return and get you money quick. So waiting till later might be OK if you don’t have the rest of your life in order. But if you’re fixed and ready to go and you’re just looking for fast cash. Talk with a pro, calculate your loss and getting your documents. There’s a lot of latitude there, too, in calculating your loss. But you carry that back and you can have cash in a very short amount of time, which is more life altering and life fixing than that false delay that you’ve got several more months to go do it. So talk with a pro if you’ve got a disaster, especially in a federal disaster area and especially if you’ve had an economic loss. There’s a lot to do.
SPEAKER 05 :
Now, Mark, I know you’ve been doing this, you know, more than 35 years. And I love to kind of pick people’s brains. How did you get into this and stay into it so long? Like, what led you into this area of expertise?
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, it’s a long, painful story. And the funny part of this, Angie, is I’ve only had two jobs in my whole life, two companies in 40 years. I got into it, as many of your listeners may know, especially the gray-haired old ones, back in 1985 with the Tax Reform Act under Ronald Reagan, the first piece of major tax legislation arguably in 80 years. when they started to change all the tax rules. I came out with just an accounting degree and somebody said, we need help in taxes. And I said, I hate taxes. But then I figured how big this was over my career. It’s the largest single financial transaction to most Americans. You have to do it every year for 40, 50, 60 years for some people. You know, it has a large financial consequence. And many people just think it’s this horrible thing I have to do for an hour a year when the reality is taxes are now a year round event. It’s never been a bigger financial impact. You know, taxes are used to socially construct the company or country from buying cars to buying houses to equity redistribution. It’s a very important act, not just something you have to do like brushing your teeth or exercising. It’s a critically important thing to do. But if you don’t do it right, you’ll pay too much. And I don’t mean to that tax pro. I mean to the government. And here’s a final point to your listeners. The IRS is not in the business of making sure you get all your money. They’re not going to send you a larger check because you left… a benefit or a credit or an election or deduction. They’re going to come to get you if you didn’t pay all your money. But if you leave off a benefit, you know, you just lose that money. And many people think I can do it on a smartphone at the red light on my commute in. Not a good way. Not a good best practice. Not for the next half century that you’re going to be filing tax returns.

Well, there’s a lot of sites out there, irs.gov, good stuff. There’s emergency management information on FEMA if you’re in a disaster and people know about that.
