HR2 Drive Radio: May 17, 2025 by John Rush
SPEAKER 07 :
Being an expert on general automotive knowledge, what would the correct ignition timing be on a 1955 Bel Air Chevrolet with a 327 cubic inch engine and a four barrel carburetor?
SPEAKER 22 :
It is a trick question. Watch this. Because Chevy didn’t make a 327 in 55. The 327 didn’t come out until 62. And it wasn’t offered in the Bel Air with a four-barrel carb until 64. However, in 1964, the correct ignition timing would be four degrees before top dead center.
SPEAKER 18 :
Get ready for another hour of Drive Radio, brought to you by Colorado Select Auto Care Centers. Got a question for the experts? Then give them a call, 303-477-5600. Now it’s time to pop the hood and get our hands dirty. Drive Radio on KLZ 560 The Source.
SPEAKER 17 :
All right, and we are back. Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Again, if you’re just joining us, thank you very much. We have Roy and Dietze both from Pro-Tech Auto Shield with us today. We’ll get into more things along the lines of window tint and PPF, which is paint protection film, and ceramic coating. And one thing we haven’t talked about yet is just the whole PDR end of things. If you guys find yourself with a door ding or hail damage or something like that, chances are you can have that removed by them. without going to the collision center and having to have panels painted and all of that. We can talk about some of that as we get going. Mark Ernst, he also with us from accountable up in Broomfield. Uh, we have Burke pain though, joining us now, Burke, welcome. How are you, sir? I’m doing good about yourself. I’m doing very well. BP appraisers, which, uh, uh, you guys, um, have been with us now for a while, Burke, and you just went to a conference. Talk about that if you would.
SPEAKER 14 :
So, uh, every year as part of our continuing education, um, with, uh, The ASA, we attend the automotive specialty groups, and this year it was held just outside of Washington, D.C. We had 12 or 15 appraisers that were there this year were able to make it, and we talked about the market. We talked about, you know, where we kind of see the market going, what are the trends going on right now, that kind of thing. Really informative, like I said, with the continuing education, staying up to date on where the market’s going and what the industry standards are as far as appraisals go.
SPEAKER 17 :
So anything new? I mean, I’m interested in knowing what the market trends are saying. Anything new along those lines? Any big changes coming?
SPEAKER 14 :
Not necessarily any big changes. What we’re seeing is the market’s kind of staled a little bit. And the one big takeaway was great cars are still selling for great prices. And I think that once the economy kind of stabilizes and we get some breathing room there, that I think that we’ll see things start reappearing back into the market again.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay. And I want to go back up for a moment as well. Good cars, you know, the best cars, in other words, are still bringing the best prices, which is kind of typical, Burke, as you know. It’s kind of true with even art pieces or high-end guns and things like that. If it’s a unique piece that has a high demand, the prices typically don’t vary much one way or the other. Now, the problem is, though, and we talk about this quite a bit when you’re on, people look at those cars that get sold and they think, well, I have the same car out in the garage. Why? Well, you probably don’t, so no, your car in the garage probably isn’t worth what just went through at that auction, correct?
SPEAKER 14 :
Absolutely. You know, we’re talking Concourse, you know, Category 1, Category 2 cars. These are cars that are absolutely phenomenal, you know, eat off the… oil pan and that type of thing. The one big thing we really discussed a lot was the cost of restoration now. Cars that need a lot of work are not selling very well right now.
SPEAKER 17 :
Yeah, and I appreciate you mentioning that because this is, I think, a misconception a lot of people have with that car that Grandma had, and they’ve now inherited it, and they think it’s worth what that last car that just went through Barrett-Jackson brought, and so they’re thinking that they’re whatever. I mean, I don’t even want to name off cars, but they’re whatever, whatever car is worth the same price. Unless it’s been on the rotisserie, to your point, Burke, and it is perfect and or it was all original and it’s all numbers matching and it’s never been touched or blemished or whatever, which, by the way, there’s very few of those left, Burke, as you know. Reality is because of that cost of restoration, which for some of you listening, maybe you don’t realize this, but that full rotisserie bill, Burke, you know this as well as I, 100 grand is a low number to get one done.
SPEAKER 14 :
Oh, absolutely, and, you know, a lot of times these guys are doing, you know, they’re doing it on a car that they love, so they’re not quite as concerned about the turnaround. Expense doesn’t matter. Right, but they’re occasionally will show up on a car, and someone will, you know, have spent $200,000, and I can’t bring it in anywhere near there, you know, because the number, you know, I won’t stroke someone’s ego. The number’s the number, and that’s the way it is, you know, and… It’s just, you know, it has to be that way.
SPEAKER 17 :
Well, and by the way, I appreciate you doing that. And for those of you listening, if you’re looking to have a car appraised, we talked a few weeks ago about diminished value and all of that, or even some of you that have been involved in an accident where there’s potentially diminished value you need to get with Burke, make sure you’re getting compensated and made whole from the insurance company, whether it’s somebody else’s or your own. Same thing applies, Burke, either or. So you’ve got to make sure you’re being made whole there. But some of you guys that have classic cars or you’re inheriting one, and now, Burke, there’s, I don’t know, let’s, you know, I don’t want to try to exaggerate, but there could be three to ten family members involved in all of a sudden there’s this heirloom car that everybody wanted to get their hands on. Everybody’s decided now because we can’t decide who’s going to own it at the end of the day, or maybe one person wants to own it but still has to compensate all of the other family members that are now involved. What’s that price? That’s where you become involved, right?
SPEAKER 14 :
Absolutely. And you also, you know, there are still those barn finds out there. And, you know, as we’ve talked before, I’d hate to see someone who doesn’t know exactly what they have, you know, sell it for way cheaper than it can.
SPEAKER 17 :
Good point.
SPEAKER 14 :
You know, I’m going to, when a client calls me, I’m going to ask them what they have. And, you know, I’m not going to come out and do an appraisal on an 84 Chevette, you know. Right. Unless it’s been like it’s got a supercharger motor in it or something like that. But I’m going to tell them, I’m going to say, listen, this is where they’re selling for. you’re better off selling this on your own rather than paying me to come out and take a look at it.
SPEAKER 17 :
And by the way, I appreciate that because, yeah, to your point, there are some of those vehicles out there where somebody might think that, yeah, this car is an heirloom and it’s worth all sorts of money and it’s old. And so, you know, we know there’s a lot of value here. Well, just because it’s old, depending upon the car, the demand, the make, the model, the mileage, the condition. And, Burke, I mean, this could even be on very popular cars where – You know, it’s a 67 Camaro. I’ll rattle that one off. It’s a 67 Camaro. Everything’s all original on it. But, you know, maybe at one point in time, Burke, somebody changed the color or somebody put a different engine in it or whatever the case may be. Well, now you’re looking at that car saying, yeah, there’s some value here. And yes, a 67 Camaro has some value and especially one that’s been unadulterated. They’re they’re worth decent money, especially if it’s the right car. You know, model of 67 Camaro. But if it’s just a regular old, you know, 67 Camaro three speed Burke that somebody has gone through and did a bunch of changing around on. No offense. That car will still bring money, but it’s not going to bring what you see some of these other 67 Camaros going through auctions bringing.
SPEAKER 14 :
100%. You know, that’s the big thing. And, you know, we see it all the time. We have people, you know, ask, you know, hey, you know, come out, look at this car, and it’s rusted out. But I saw this one go across Barrett-Jackson. Yeah, but that’s after you dropped $200,000 on it. Right.
SPEAKER 17 :
Absolutely, yeah. And there’s where some of the misconceptions come into play, and families even will say, well, yeah, that car’s been in the family forever, and Grandma bought it new, and it’s got to be worth a boatload of money. Maybe, maybe not. It depends.
SPEAKER 14 :
Absolutely. And the other thing we talked about in our appraisal conference was that Old Navy had Chevy pickup trucks, blue Chevy pickup trucks in most of their stores.
SPEAKER 11 :
Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER 14 :
Those are now hitting the market, and there’s no VIN on them. There’s no documentation. So people need to be careful if they’re looking at Chevy trucks right now because they’re hitting the market and they’re being sold as a true… 1950 Chevy pickup when it’s truly not.
SPEAKER 17 :
I did not know that. You just taught me something that I remember seeing the trucks, but I wasn’t aware that those were non-Vin. In other words, good luck doing anything with that truck, especially if you’re in a state like Colorado. That’s a truck where if you brought it here, Burke, for those of you listening, and Burke, you know this, that would have to go through a complete inspection process. You’d have to assign a VIN number. It’s not going to be a 1950 Chevy when you’re done. It may not even pass emissions in this state when it’s done. You’ve got a basket of troubles, let’s just say it that way.
SPEAKER 14 :
Absolutely, because it’s not documented. And, you know, yeah, you’re going to have to bond around the title. You’re going to have to do all kinds of stuff. And it’s going to be a lot of work and a And I know that State Patrol is months behind on their certified bin inspections, and so it’s definitely going to be a lot of work to get it done.
SPEAKER 17 :
That’s good to know. I was not aware of that, meaning, as always, Burke, buyer beware. And here’s something, Burke, I know you’d be willing to do for people. If you’re looking at a vehicle and you’re wanting to have an opinion on, is this something I should even continue to look at, Burke, you could tell them, you know, yep, that’s a car that I think collectively, let me come out, let’s do an appraisal, let’s take a peek at it. Before you buy it, let’s make sure you’re on the right track. Or in some cases, Burke, you might just say, yeah, no, move on.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, and I have. I’ve done, you know, we’ve done some pre-purchase inspections. We did one not too long ago. Guy wanted to buy it for him and his son to drive to Home Depot and go to the farmer’s market in, and I slid underneath there and found that the frame was cracked. And I talked to the guy and I said, well, here’s, you know, here’s what it’s going to, I called a couple of my contacts and said, what’s it going to cost to fix this frame? And So I was able to say, hey, this is what you’re looking at. Do you have the bandwidth to take this project on?
SPEAKER 17 :
That would be one I would run from, so good advice on that one. How do folks get a hold of you, Burke?
SPEAKER 14 :
The best way to get a hold of us is either on our website at BP Auto Appraisals. You can also hit us up at Facebook, BP Appraisals on Facebook, or our phone number, 720-295-0108. Awesome.
SPEAKER 17 :
Burke, I appreciate it. Thank you for the update, and we’ll have you back here in the not-too-distant future again.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, could I make one quick announcement real quick? Absolutely.
SPEAKER 17 :
Go ahead, Burke. Absolutely. Go for it.
SPEAKER 14 :
So we’ve got the Street Riders for Life Applebee’s Car Show coming up Memorial Day weekend.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay, so next weekend.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yep, we’re going to be doing a special there. We’re going to be actually giving away an appraisal at the show. Awesome. Well, actually after the show. And all we’re asking people to do is go on to our Facebook page, like us, message me with your make, model, vehicle, and we’re going to randomly draw one of those individuals to get a free appraisal.
SPEAKER 17 :
Nice. And where’s the car show at, Burke?
SPEAKER 14 :
It’s on Colfax at the Applebee’s on Colfax. You know, I don’t know the exact address. I probably should have known that.
SPEAKER 17 :
Well, I tell you what, when you get that, send it to me, text me or whatever. I’ll make sure I put that up here before we’re over with the show today, and then I’ll have producer Ann put that up on our information as well so folks know what’s going on also.
SPEAKER 14 :
Absolutely, and this is a big show. I think it’s their 41st annual or something like that. They’ve been doing it a long time.
SPEAKER 17 :
Awesome.
SPEAKER 14 :
Oh, here we go. I’ve got the address here. It’s 10625 West Colfax Avenue in Lakewood, Colorado. And the show starts at 9 a.m., I believe, or 8 a.m., sorry, 8 a.m., It runs until usually about 3 or 4, depending on the weather.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 14 :
And what day?
SPEAKER 17 :
Is that Saturday, Sunday, Monday? Which day?
SPEAKER 14 :
Monday. Monday. Monday the 26th.
SPEAKER 17 :
All right. Awesome. Okay. I will put that down. If anybody wants to know more information, they can call you, I’m guessing, as well. Right, Burke?
SPEAKER 14 :
Oh, absolutely. And it’s actually for a donation for a nonprofit that donates dogs to for law enforcement and military to help with PTSD. Awesome. So, really great show. If you come out, stop by the booth, talk to us, and get signed up for that, possibly win that free appraisal.
SPEAKER 17 :
Awesome. Burke, you are awesome. I appreciate it very much, sir.
SPEAKER 14 :
All right. Well, thank you so much.
SPEAKER 17 :
You’re very welcome. Have a great rest of your day. Thelma, hang tight. We’ll get back to you in a moment on your purchase car question. We’ll be right back. Drive Radio, KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 01 :
Air conditioning season is starting in Colorado. Are you ready? Take advantage of Geno’s Auto’s air conditioning recharge special. Is your vehicle’s air conditioning ready to keep you cool on hot Colorado days? We all know how fast Colorado can heat up. The refrigerant in your air conditioning system gets contaminants, evaporates, and breaks down over time. That refrigerant needs to be able to absorb heat to be able to cool your vehicle’s interior. Geno’s uses a cooling machine that takes out the old refrigerant and cleans it. Then they put the clean refrigerant back, topping off with Freon at the right level. To make your life simpler, Geno’s offers loaner vehicles so you can drop your car off and pick up when ready. We back up our work with Napa’s nationwide 36-month, 36,000-mile warranty. Stay cool this summer by making sure your system is up to date and ready for this year’s summer heat. Give us a call or go online to schedule an appointment. We’re AAA approved and located at Bowles and Platte Canyon. Stop in or visit us online at genosautoservice.com.
SPEAKER 03 :
Here’s why you need personal injury attorney Kevin Flesch on your side. He understands the way the jury thinks. In the context of a personal injury case, you’ve been hurt by someone else’s negligence. The idea is that you’re going to try to recover so that you can get back to where you were just prior to that incident occurring. What that really means from a jurist’s perspective is that you’re going to be asking them to award you money. So when we talk about fairness, we’re talking about six people that you don’t know. Those six people view the evidence and make a unanimous decision that will decide what the fair value is. When you’re the one who’s hurt, you have a good idea of what you think it’s worth. The question is, can you persuade those other individuals whom you don’t know and were witnesses to believe that’s what the case is worth? Kevin Flesch understands the way the jury thinks. Call now for a free consultation. 303-806-8886.

All right, we are back. Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Thanks for joining us. Thelma, welcome. How are you?
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. I’m okay, I suppose, and thanks for taking my call.
SPEAKER 17 :
Thank you. What can I help you with, Thelma?
SPEAKER 07 :
I had an accident with my truck.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
And now I need a… Better vehicle than what I’ve got. Okay. They gave me a big wheel, but that don’t hit the spot for me.
SPEAKER 17 :
What do you have right now? What are you driving now that was wrecked, Thelma?
SPEAKER 07 :
I was driving a Toyota Corolla, which was 02, and it got me to and from. I walk to work, so I don’t have to drive that to work.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
I usually drive from Wellington to Fort Collins for shopping and do some work over at Fort Collins. And so now I am stranded and would like to get a decent vehicle.
SPEAKER 17 :
All right. Do you have anything in particular in mind? I mean, what is it you would like to buy?
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, I would like a smaller, a small truck.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
And that, uh, because I sometimes, sometimes, uh, do hauling here or hauling there. I have a, an apartment in Fort Collin that I usually go over there and work maybe once or twice a week, or maybe just once. It depends on the weather.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
And I’ve been told that I should retire, but I don’t want to.
SPEAKER 17 :
It’s all right. I don’t blame you for that at all, Thelma. I think personally, and you’ve heard me talk about this on more than one occasion, yeah, I think people should work longer than probably most do just because I think it’s good for you. So I think I’m on your side. Keep working. Keep doing it. Now, do you have a price range in mind, Thelma?
SPEAKER 07 :
Well… I was looking anywhere from probably $10,000 to $15,000. Okay. Is that a good price range? I haven’t bought a vehicle yet. for quite a while.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay. Well, here’s what I’m going to tell you to do just because we’ve got help in not only your area but in the Boulder area as well. Call Ridgeline Auto Brokers. Talk to Justin. And again, he’s in your area and they’ve either got vehicles that they may have already in stock. If not, he can look for a vehicle for you, Thelma. I’m looking online. They’ve got a 2018 Tacoma. A little higher price than what you’re wanting to spend but might still… work well for you, and you’re more than willing, again, call them and find out exactly what they can do for you. You want the phone number?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yes. 303-442-4141. That is 303-442-4141. 401-401.
SPEAKER 17 :
You got it. Absolutely. And talk to either Josh or Justin. Justin typically will be the one answering the phone anyways. But go ahead and talk to them. Tell them exactly what you want, and they’ll do the rest.
SPEAKER 07 :
Where are they located at?
SPEAKER 17 :
They have a location in Fort Collins and one in Boulder both.
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, okay. Okay. Very well. Very well.
SPEAKER 17 :
And they’re more than happy to take care of you. I guarantee you that. Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. And I would like to let you know, I’m a veteran. And we have a fantastic veteran breakfast every Saturday morning in Loveland at the Golden Corral.
SPEAKER 17 :
Oh, okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
would like to come to it, I think we usually have about 150 veterans.
SPEAKER 17 :
Wow, that’s a lot. And what time is that, Thelma? So it’s on Saturdays?
SPEAKER 07 :
It’s on Saturday, it’s 8.15, and it usually lasts after we have our little ceremony, and then We have breakfast, and it used to be about a little after 9 or so.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay. Good to know. I’ll see if I can’t rearrange my schedule at some point and come up and visit.
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, we would love to have you.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay. Well, I would love that. Thank you, Thelma, for the invitation. I appreciate that. Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
Thank you.
SPEAKER 17 :
You’re very welcome, Thelma. And call them. They’ll be happy to take care of you on finding a truck. All right. We’re up against a break. We’ll come back here in just a moment. Lines are open, 303-477-5600, Drive Radio, KLZ 560.

All right, we are back. Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Again, Mark Grunze with me from Accountable up in Broomfield. Also have ProTech Auto Shield, Roy and Dietze here with us as well. Fred in Castle Rock, you are next. Go ahead, Fred.
SPEAKER 12 :
Hey, good morning, John. Good morning. Hi, Roy and Dietze and you all. I’ve actually met Dietze before, but I wanted to talk to you real quick. I’ve got a, I was hoping to get a hold of Burke while he was on, but I’ve got a 2021 BMW. It’s an M40i and some panel truck backed into my wife’s side, down in both of the passenger side doors. Yeah, it’s taken us probably four months just to be able to schedule it. It won’t be in until the 2nd of June. But I called Burke, and I’m going to hook up with him. He already did a little research for me. It just takes time to go through that process.
SPEAKER 17 :
Absolutely. It sure does.
SPEAKER 12 :
And so I’m definitely going to have some diminished value on this.
SPEAKER 17 :
Yeah, and Fred, great example. And this is what I was talking about with him a few weeks ago. But, you know, with you being here now, good reminder. And it doesn’t have to be, you know, a nice BMW M4 to have diminished value. It could be a, you know, in your case it’s a 2021. No offense, it could be a 2021 F-150 or a 2021 BMW.
SPEAKER 12 :
you know Chevy whatever I mean reality is there’s diminished value no matter what it’s just how much yeah exactly I mean it’s a sad thing because we had just bought it my wife ran her little Acura RDX into the ground and I said we’re going to get you something nice you know we’re getting older and can do that but and then lo and behold now we’re sitting driving this car around for four or five months with a big dent in the side and I’m looking forward to working with him he’ll take care of you as you know he’s a great guy and we’ll definitely take care of you Fred Next vehicle, if you have time. Yes, go right ahead. I’ve got a 2000 Toyota 4Runner. I’m at 397,000 miles on it. All original. But when I stop, like I put a hard stop on it, like I’m coming up to a line that changed yellow, you know, I’m trying to stop quickly. Then it stops, and then as soon as I let off the brakes, there’s like a pause, like the transmission doesn’t engage right away until I step on the throttle a little bit and it clicks in. But otherwise, I had the transmission overhauled, oh, probably a year and a half ago.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 12 :
But this was there before even that. It shifts fine. The car runs great. I just immaculate on my maintenance and all that. I just don’t know what happens. I put the brakes on, it stops. And then I let off the brake, and like it spins freely just for a short period of time, and then it engages, and it just runs fine.
SPEAKER 17 :
Interesting. And it was doing this before the transmission replacement?
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 17 :
And did you use, did they overhaul your existing transmission, or did you end up with a different one?
SPEAKER 12 :
No, no, they overhauled my existing one.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay, so they overhauled the old one. Okay.
SPEAKER 12 :
Frank, a quick thing. Those of you that have old 4Runners like that, you know, the little solenoids or whatever that engage things or don’t disengage things. I went through three different versions of that and two different mechanics, and they couldn’t figure it out until they went to the stock Toyota one, and it worked fine. Yep.
SPEAKER 17 :
That is very common. Yeah. Anyhow. And I’ll be honest on that one. What I would do, because of the specialty side of that, I would go to Toy Exis, who’s one of our sponsors. And they’re a little ways from you, so you don’t have to drive to them. But I would go take that to them. They’re down off of… Kind of the downtown area, south downtown area, right off I-25 and kind of that Broadway area, Fred. But that’s their specialty. They know that vehicle like the back of their hand. I would have them take a peek at it, drive it, see what’s going on. I don’t know if there’s anybody else I would tell you to go to that knows them as well as they do.
SPEAKER 12 :
I’ve been to them before a couple of times, and any repairs I’ve ever had down there, the service is great. They do know those vehicles.
SPEAKER 17 :
They do. And, you know, Paul’s the owner. And, yeah, and I know that’s typically not your normal thing. And, hey, they’re going to understand that as well. They know you’re down in Castle Rock. You’re not just going to come up to them to do oil changes and things like that. But in this particular case, given the specialty of that, I would have them look at it.
SPEAKER 12 :
Okay. I’ll do that. Do you have time for a fourth or a third? Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER 17 :
Go ahead. One more time. Go for it.
SPEAKER 12 :
I got a 1954, I’ve spoken with you before, listened for a long number of years, 1954 Kaiser Manhattan, and it’s got a 226-inch flat six. It was stock supercharged because they didn’t switch over to V8s at the time, so they did that to get the extra boost. It didn’t end up helping them as a company. They ended up going out of business. Right, right. I’m looking to do repairs on it. It sat for 15 years. And I need to go completely through the vehicle. I drove it down to the place I had it in storage. And it drove then, but I don’t want to start it up. I don’t want to do anything to it unless I have someone go through it mechanically. Gas tank, fuel lines, you name it. Yeah. You gave me a reference to somebody down in Lilton.
SPEAKER 17 :
Cars Remember When would be the only place that I would start with, and whether they do it or not would be up to them. But they’re the only ones that I would think of to be a starting point on that car. And, Fred, I know them well enough to know that if they can’t do it, they can at least recommend somebody that could.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah. Now, he told me that none of his mechanics are familiar with the Kaisers at all. A lot of the stuff I don’t think is really specific to Kaisers, but I understand they’ve got a throughput.
SPEAKER 17 :
Well, they do, and you do want somebody that’s more familiar with that car than somebody that is not. At the end of the day, it saves you money because if somebody’s familiar, they know more of how things even work and come apart and so on. That is not a car that’s in my wheelhouse. I’m sorry to say I don’t know anybody to send you to. That’s not something, unless, Roy, you know somebody on the Kaiser end of things. I do not, Fred. Is there any clubs around, Fred, on the Kaiser end of things that you know of?
SPEAKER 12 :
There is, and I’m a member. They’ve been around, gosh, since the late 50s, the Kaiser-Fraser Owners Club International.
SPEAKER 17 :
Do they know anybody?
SPEAKER 12 :
I’m going to reach out to some folks. It’s thinning out. This isn’t a car that retains value like some of the… No, you’re correct.
SPEAKER 17 :
They do not. You’re right. You know, the other person to call on that, by the way, would be Burke Payne, our appraiser, because of all of the things that he does along those lines, Fred, you might call Burke and see if he has any ideas.
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, sir, we’ve just come full circle. So I’ll talk to Burke about my BMW and my Kaiser.
SPEAKER 17 :
There you go. You can just ask him on both.
SPEAKER 12 :
Hey, I appreciate you, John. You betcha, Fred. And top quality folks. Thank you, Fred.
SPEAKER 17 :
I appreciate you very much. And, yeah, ask Burke on both of those, and he’d be happy to help you out, I’m sure. Do I need to take a break, Charlie? We’re good, right? I’ve got another five minutes? Okay, we’re good. Okay, Ed Narvati, you’re next. Go ahead. Go ahead, Ed.
SPEAKER 09 :
Hey, I’ve got a problem, and I’m hoping that you can help me some.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 09 :
I had an 85 Chevy pickup truck, short wheelbase, 1500, and it got stolen. Aurora Police found it, and I’m having problems getting it out. I do not have a title on it. The title is in North Carolina, under somebody else’s name. I have a bill of sale that is notarized. And I have all the police reports, but they say I cannot touch this without the title. I went to the DMV in Arvada here, and they’re no help whatsoever. And I’m just asking for help to see how I can get this back out.
SPEAKER 17 :
And it’s in impound now with City of Aurora, is that right? Yes. Okay. And here’s what we’re up against. Because it has no title and you can’t get a title in Colorado without a VIN verification, what you’re going to need to do, because here’s what I would do. First things first, see if you can’t get a VIN verification. And that’s going to be calling City of Aurora and asking, hey, how can I get an appointment either with you guys? It has to be done by State Patrol is the problem. The only way they can do VIN verifications in the state is Air Care Colorado or Colorado. State Patrol. You’re not going to get it to Air Care Colorado because it’s an impound. State Patrol could go get it for you. So the first thing I would do would be to call State Patrol, share with them what’s happening. Can you help me get a VIN verification, see what they say? Once you get a VIN verification, you then could go to the DMV. It doesn’t even matter if it’s stolen or not. Just go to DMV with your North Carolina title, with your bill of sale, and with your VIN verification. You could get a Colorado title at that point. With that, you could get it out of impound.
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, the problem is with North Carolina. They will not send me a duplicate copy of the title.
SPEAKER 17 :
Oh, so you don’t have the North Carolina title in hand? I do not. Oh, yeah, that is an issue. So you have a bill of sale. Is the person that had the car originally still around?
SPEAKER 09 :
That I’ve been trying to contact.
SPEAKER 17 :
I cannot find him anywhere. Yeah, because what North Carolina and Colorado or any state would tell you is that duplicate title is going to go to that owner.
SPEAKER 09 :
Correct. That’s what they told me.
SPEAKER 17 :
And therein lies the problem, so we’ve got to find that owner. All right. The only other thing that you could potentially do would be to hire an attorney and get some legal advice on this, Ed, because some of this is a little bit out of my wheelhouse. I know the procedures on how this is all working, but you may have to figure out a way to sidestep that, legally speaking. And what I don’t know is whether that’s an attorney in Colorado or North Carolina or a combo of the two. Well, I would venture to say it’d probably be Colorado. Well, not necessarily, because the title, the first title is in North Carolina, and they’re going to have to get you. In other words, first things first, what the state or what Aurora’s looking at or what anybody’s looking at is who owns the car. We need proof. Granted, you’ve got a bill of sale, but we need to know where was that original title at, actually have it first before you can even then get Colorado title because DMV is not going to do anything without that. So you might actually have to have an attorney in North Carolina to actually be able to get the title in hand first.
SPEAKER 09 :
Okay. Okay.
SPEAKER 17 :
And as you know, the legal thing, an attorney in Colorado can’t necessarily practice unless he’s got licensing in North Carolina. I’m guessing you’re going to need a referral or somebody from Colorado to North Carolina or find somebody in North Carolina that can help you, legally speaking, because a Colorado attorney can’t. Okay.
SPEAKER 09 :
All right. That helps a little bit. Some other alternative is wait until it goes to auction and buy it back at auction.
SPEAKER 17 :
The problem is, even then, I’m not sure how they’re going to auction it without title because I guess they could run it through as a parts car sort of a thing with no title. Maybe. And even then, though, Ed, you could be waiting. I’m not joking. You could be waiting two years. Yeah. I’m not exaggerating. It could take that long to cycle through. Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
All right. Well, thank you for your help, and I’ll try to contact somebody.
SPEAKER 17 :
Yeah, I would try to contact somebody in North Carolina to represent you to see if they can’t work on your behalf to get that duplicate title. Great. I’ll try that. Okay, Ed. Appreciate you very much. And that is a reminder to all of you listening that when you get a car in your possession and you have a bill of sale to make sure you have everything necessary to get title in your current state, because we have lots of listeners, Nebraska, Wyoming, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Montana, Florida listeners, Michigan listeners. We have people all over. So wherever you live and you’re going to title that car, You’ve got to make sure you’ve got all your ducks in a row to get that done, or you’re going to be back in the same boat that he’s in. I hate to say that, that Ed’s in. So, anyway, we’ll see what we can do to help you as much as we can, Ed. But hang tight. Mike and Eric, you guys hang tight. We’ll come right back and talk to you. This is Drive Radio KLZ 560.

SPEAKER 15 :
Hey, on your caller with the car and Aurora impound, I hope he’s still listening. He’s got a charge being charged to him for storage every day.
SPEAKER 17 :
Every day.
SPEAKER 15 :
And I, you know, that charge may be more than the car is worth when he’s done.
SPEAKER 17 :
It could very well be. We were talking about that through the break, Mike.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, I hope he’s still listening, but that one is going to be interesting because how long has it been there, did he say?
SPEAKER 17 :
He didn’t say. I don’t know. All right. Well, you know what? He did say they just found it and called him, so probably not very long at this point, meaning I would get it in and out of there sooner than later.
SPEAKER 15 :
Absolutely. I mean, those charges, and hopefully, I hate to say it, but it happens, a lot of those places, they get ransacked, as you know. And if there’s anything in it of value, it won’t be there. And then they’ll point at the sign saying, not our responsibility. Hey, 2015 Ford Escape SE. Okay. Needs struts and shocks. It is, and by the way, that vehicle belongs to a friend of mine in Florida. Shout out to Steve Horvath at Geno’s who found me a great Napa store down there. And they did wonderful work on it, but we still have one other project, and that is the struts and shocks on it. How tough of a job is that one?
SPEAKER 17 :
Mark, you can answer that better than I can.
SPEAKER 05 :
Most struts are now assemblies, so it’s not a big deal to replace them. On an escape, you’ll still need an alignment with it. Yeah, yeah. And it’s not hard, but the parts are not cheap at all. And there’s still a fair amount of labor, so it’s a $1,000 project real quick.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, that doesn’t surprise me. She went about it all backwards, but at least we found somebody good. put new tires on it, et cetera, aligned it with the new tires, new brakes, and I went, boy, I would have backed that up. I would have started with the struts and shocks. Right, right. Then the tires, then the alignment for the whole shoe. But, you know, it’s done now. Right, right. All right. Thank you very much.
SPEAKER 17 :
You are very welcome. Thank you, Mike, for that. I appreciate that as well. Somebody said that my last VIN verification was done by Broomfield Police. And please tell me when that was, because to my knowledge, things have changed. And there’s only, again, two entities in Colorado that can do that. the VIN verification, but I may be wrong. And it used to be even dealers could do VIN verifications, but I don’t think that’s even the case anymore. I’ll do my best to try to look that up and let you guys know. Jim in Castle Rock, go ahead.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yeah, this is Jim. Yeah, go ahead, Jim. You bet. Yeah, I did a title from Vermont on a Jeep Cherokee here in Colorado. I couldn’t get a title on because I couldn’t find the previous owner of it.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 16 :
and sent the VIN number with a bill of sale to the state of Vermont, and they’ll give you a title. You can register it in the states.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay, and again, possible, and I’m not going to say you’re wrong, Jim, but I do know this, every state’s a little bit different, so I don’t know what he’s actually tried to do in North Carolina, nor do I know what their rules are. I can tell you right now, in Colorado, that would not fly. You’re not going to get that done here in Colorado.
SPEAKER 16 :
I did it here.
SPEAKER 17 :
No, no, no, I meant if you were out of state, say you’re in North Carolina trying to get a Colorado title as a duplicate, you’re not going to get that done in that same fashion in Colorado.
SPEAKER 16 :
I thought he was good at misstates.
SPEAKER 17 :
No, he’s trying to get a title from North Carolina that doesn’t know where the owner is. North Carolina will not give him the duplicate title, even with the bill of sale. They want to send the duplicate title back to the original owner. And Colorado, I will tell you right now, if you were in Vermont trying to get a Vermont title and a duplicate Colorado title, it’s the same way here in Colorado. They’re not going to give you a duplicate title just because you have a bill of sale. They’re not going to do it. They will give that title to the original owner that had that car originally, or had that title originally here in Colorado.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yeah, I couldn’t find the original owner on Cherokee.
SPEAKER 17 :
And you were really lucky that Vermont did that, by the way.
SPEAKER 16 :
Well… They advertise it. You can go online, and they advertise it online.
SPEAKER 17 :
Yeah, and again, like I said, Jim, every state does that a little bit differently as far as their DMVs are concerned, and evidently North Carolina is very much like Colorado, it sounds.
SPEAKER 16 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 17 :
So you were lucky. You did really well on that. You were very fortunate there.
SPEAKER 16 :
Okay. Thank you, Jim.
SPEAKER 17 :
Appreciate it very much. John in Denver, go ahead.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, I have an old truck, 1955, and I recently changed over from horseless carriage plates to classic vehicle plates. And there’s two plates, you know, one for the back, one for the rear. And I have a really cool old 1955 Colorado license plate I was running on the front. But am I required to run both of those classic car plates? You know, one on the back, one on the front. Am I required to do that, or can I leave that front one off and put this other 1955 one on?
SPEAKER 17 :
Do you want the legal answer or the John Rush answer?
SPEAKER 05 :
Well, how about both? Well, you can’t have two different numbers on your same car, so that’s never allowed.
SPEAKER 17 :
Yeah, you’re not supposed to, although I will tell you in Colorado on old classics like that, unless you run into an officer that’s just total by the book and he’s being a total jerk about things, you typically wouldn’t have any issues running the one on the back that’s the legit plate with its tag and everything on it versus the other one on the front. Now, the other thing you can do, and this is possible, You could even on the classic car registration side, they will allow you. You have to go through the process, but you can you can register it under your other plate that you have from 1955. Let’s say they’ll let you do that. Wow, I didn’t know that. Yeah, you go down to the DMV, take your plate, that number, and it’s a process. And there’s a cost, of course, to it. It’s not free junk because nothing ever is along those lines. But you can actually take that 55 license plate and register it to that truck under the classic designation. Wow. I didn’t know that. Yeah, it’s something they changed. Oh, it’s been a while ago now. But there’s a lot of people. You’ll see a 1940 with a 1940 plate on it, and that’s how they’ve done it. That’s a legitimate plate on that car registered as a classic, and they’ve gone through that process to do so. Wow.
SPEAKER 06 :
I’ll have to think about that. I was thinking about putting the three of them on there. Go ahead and put the front back on. and then putting also that 55 on there on the back.
SPEAKER 05 :
I know I’ve been pulled over just on test drives in Mayberry, also known as Broomfield, just because the plates had different numbers, and that’s the only reason they pulled me over. Right. That is one thing.
SPEAKER 17 :
Especially on a daily driver, John, they will definitely look at on a 55, especially if you’re just tooling around or going to a car show or whatever. Again, it just depends on the officer and how sticky they want to be and where you’re at to Mark’s point.
SPEAKER 06 :
Right. Yeah. Okay. All right. But you can do that.
SPEAKER 17 :
And for all of you listening that have classic cars, you can take a… By the way, people sell license plates. That’s why if you have an old plate, even from 1975, you’re probably best off to keep those plates because they’re actually marketable.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, that’d be cool.
SPEAKER 17 :
People will, especially if it says 1975. So, for example, I have a 1968 Buick Grand Sport that I had in high school. And a few years ago for a present, my wife actually found some 1968 license plates. And my plan is, I haven’t done it yet, but my plan is to take that down and get that car registered with those plates so that it’ll say 1968. And, yes, you can do that in the state of Colorado. They allow you to do that on those classic license plates. You can’t do it on anything else. In fact, we have a law now on a new car where if you’ve got a car you’re currently driving, say it’s a 2020, and you go buy a new 2025, and the plates from 2020 are still good and you want to use them on the 2025, you cannot. They will reissue you new numbers. If you want to keep the same ones, it’s now a vanity plate. You have to apply the same way you would for a vanity plate with those old numbers, but you cannot just transfer those plates over to the new car. They make you get new license plates. That’s a law that came into effect. here not that long ago. A couple of years ago, I want to say. Jeff in Montana, hang tight. We’ll come right back. This is Drive Radio, KLZ 560.
