John Rush welcomes David Gonzalez from Mile High Coin for an eye-opening conversation about forgotten value hiding in your jewelry box. From unworn gold to vintage watches, David shares real stories of clients shocked to discover tens of thousands of dollars sitting in their drawers. The two discuss the process of free appraisals, how to sell items safely, and why gifting the value now might be more impactful than leaving it in an estate. Listener Louie calls in with his own testimonial. Plus, John warns about crypto scams targeting seniors and widows—highlighting the growing danger of “pig butchering” scams
SPEAKER 12 :
This is Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 13 :
You are going to shut your damn yapper and listen for a change because I got you pegged, sweetheart. You want to take the easy way out because you’re scared. And you’re scared because if you try and fail, there’s only you to blame. Let me break this down for you. Life is scary. Get used to it.
SPEAKER 12 :
There are no magical fixes. With your host, John Rush.
SPEAKER 13 :
My advice to you is to do what your parents did! Get a job, Turk! You haven’t made everybody equal. You’ve made them the same, and there’s a big difference!
SPEAKER 09 :
Let me tell you why you’re here. You’re here because you know something. What you know you can’t explain, but you feel it. You’ve felt it your entire life, that there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there. It is this feeling that has brought you to me.
SPEAKER 13 :
Are you crazy? Am I? Or am I so sane that you just blew your mind?
SPEAKER 10 :
It’s Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush. Presented by Cub Creek Heating and Air Conditioning.
SPEAKER 11 :
All right, happy Monday. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Thank you all for listening. Hopefully you had a great weekend. I did. Charlie Grimes, our engineer today. We’ve got David Gonzalez joining us from Mile High Coins. So I normally wait to do Question of the Day until we’re done with our guests, just because I want to be nice to you guys. But today’s Question of the Day fits in. So I’ll give Fridays really quick. Which actor was in the following movies, The Outsiders, Wayne’s World, and Tommy Boy? Answer, of course, is Rob Lowe. But today’s question of the day, which goes along with David being here, I don’t think Ann, who does these questions, knew this, but how much on December 12, 1980, did Leonardo da Vinci’s notebook sell for at auction? That is the question of the day. So knowing you’re in this world a little bit, I thought that question of the day is appropriate. Nothing like being on the spot, so repeat the question. How much on December 12th of 1980, so that gives a little hint, did Leonardo da Vinci’s notebook sell for at auction?
SPEAKER 1 :
Notebook.
SPEAKER 11 :
Thoughts? $1.5 million. You’re low.
SPEAKER 04 :
Ooh, $5.5 million.
SPEAKER 11 :
You’re pretty close. $6 million. No, you’re pretty close on the $5.5. A little lower than that, but pretty close to that.
SPEAKER 04 :
So there you go, folks. Wow, that’s great.
SPEAKER 11 :
Good job, David. Now, given that was 1980, today it would be three times that amount.
SPEAKER 04 :
Absolutely. Well, in 1980, gold was $800. Now it’s at $3,400. Yeah, what is it, $3,400?
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah. And not going anywhere down, I don’t think, anytime soon.
SPEAKER 04 :
All of the unrest that we’re seeing in the world tends to drive gold, and people tend to seek after it when there’s instability or questions on the future and all that kind of stuff. Yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
And for a lot of you listening, and David, you can chime in here, but for a lot of you listening, you probably have more of it that you’re not even using. What I mean by using is you’ve got a piece that maybe you had made years and years ago, could have even been from previous relationship, marriage, something along those lines, could have been… Who knows what could have been something passed down. And, you know, it just doesn’t get worn much. And my thought on that, David, is, OK, so if that’s the case, it’s just sitting there. You know, you could turn that into cash, at least find out what it’s worth. But at that point, if you want to turn that into cash and have that cash go, you know, do something either for you in regards to the financial end of things or better yet. Here’s another idea for you. If there’s something else you’ve always wanted, you know, something on your bucket list where you’ve always thought, you know, I’d like to do such and such or I’d like to have such and such. Well, you may very well have the means to do so. You just don’t know it. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 04 :
Rarely does a person come in with a little baggie full of gold or a big baggie full of gold and we go through it and I give them the number. Rarely. Is that person not surprised?
SPEAKER 11 :
I was going to say, rarely are they disappointed.
SPEAKER 04 :
No. I mean, they just don’t realize and connect the dots. And I think I shared with you, we did the Colorado Home and Garden Show a couple years ago. And, you know, home improvement projects, they want to do a new deck, they want to do an outdoor kitchen, they want to do this, they want to do that. and the stuff is just sitting in the jewelry box.
SPEAKER 11 :
And really quick, to dovetail into that, what I’ll hear from a lot of folks is, well, we’re saving to do this, or that’s not quite in the budget yet, but we’re getting there. And then little do they know, they probably have just what they need and maybe even beyond with the items that we’re talking about.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, I had a lady come in. She had done some business with me a couple months ago and came in with what she thought was a box of silver. So she thought some silver dollars, some old silver rounds, just a hodgepodge of stuff. And her aunt had wrapped each individual coin in napkins or tissue paper. Okay. Each individual coin. So this hodgepodge. So she opens up maybe 10 or 15 pieces. She got tired of opening them up because they were taped with scotch tape also. So she comes in. Well, what she didn’t realize was the gold at the bottom of the box. She was thinking $1,000. I wrote her a check for over $26,000. Wow. Amazing. She about fell on the floor.
SPEAKER 11 :
By the way, that’s a good story because depending upon the circumstances, that may be somebody that really needs that $27,000 or could have, as you said a moment ago, lots of projects, things they’d like to do. And this is the other thing, too. A lot of people think, well, John, if it’s worth that much today, and David talks about gold, you both do talk about gold not going down, so why wouldn’t I hang on to that? Well, keep in mind, when it comes to some of the things we just mentioned, home improvement projects especially, they’re going to increase in value as well. So remember, some of these things we talk about when it comes to keeping your home updated. I talk about this on my Saturday morning show, Fix It Radio, all the time. You guys will hear a replay of that tomorrow between 2 and 3. And that is, Dave, it’s simply the fact that if you don’t keep your house up, then the negative effects or the price coming down because you’re not keeping things up could far outweigh what we’re talking about turning gold in or silver in or the silver set or whatever it happens to be, the stamp collection, the watch, you name it. Turning some of those things in and then putting that back into the house where some would say, well, that’s not a very good use of those funds. Actually, it’s probably a really good use of those funds.
SPEAKER 04 :
Indeed. And also, too, I mean, having $10,000 or $15,000 worth of jewelry sitting in a jewelry box versus $250,000 in investment gold in a safe deposit is two different things.
SPEAKER 11 :
Correct.
SPEAKER 04 :
So, you know, gold goes up 10% or 15% when you’ve got a quarter million dollars. That’s a big number. That’s a big number versus, hey, I just got this scrappy little stuff laying around. Not sure what it is. You’re not even using. Yeah. And don’t like it.
SPEAKER 11 :
To your point, it’s sitting at the bottom of the jewelry box. And if you’re not wearing it and not using it, why not turn that into cash?
SPEAKER 04 :
And oftentimes, you know, it’s kind of neat. You know, people that are a little bit older will come in and they’ll bring that stuff in that they inherited. You know, they’re in their 80s and they got stuff.
SPEAKER 11 :
The second generation now probably.
SPEAKER 04 :
Exactly. But they want to gift it. to their kids and grandkids now. So instead of hanging on to it and, you know, when they die and that kind of thing, why not watch the kids and the grandkids enjoy the fruits of that?
SPEAKER 11 :
Good point. Great point. Okay, so walk us through. If somebody goes through, and I’ve mentioned this numerous times the last couple of weeks especially, KLZ listeners, they can get a free appraisal. on what they’ve got if they decide to at that point in time okay you’ve given them appraisal in some cases it may be immediate in some cases you may have to do a little research depending upon what they’ve actually brought in but appraisals done they decide okay i want to take that 20 grand let’s just say and i want to turn that into cash how long does that take
SPEAKER 04 :
It’s immediate. Okay. Five minutes. They come in and we test everything. We go through everything. We are identifying what’s 10 carat, what’s 14 carat. And we provide transparency, too. So we help you understand what is the weight, what is the stuff valued at, what are we making, what are the fees that we have to pay to a refinery or to eBay, those types of things. Right. But then we’re writing a check. So they’re walking out with money right away. And so it doesn’t take long at all. Now, if we’re dealing with something more complicated, there are times that we’re dealing with higher-end coin collections. And we do brokerage arrangements where they’ll pay us a fee where we represent the individual. And we work on, again, 100% transparency. And we work on a set fee. We provide the receipts, the invoices, all those types of things. Sometimes that can take a little bit of time, but we’re trying to maximize the value of what we get for each of those coins as well. But generally speaking, I would say nine times out of ten, you’re walking in an hour, later you’re walking out.
SPEAKER 11 :
The other thing, too, then, David, I’ve been talking about this a little bit off air that you guys will start to see more and more of is the whole watch end of things as well. So for those of you that might have some heirloom watches or maybe you’re a guy that’s got two or three different types of watches, Rolexes, whatever, maybe one of those was gifted to you for, I don’t know, retirement or something along those lines, and you’re just thinking, you know, that’s another item I just don’t wear. I’m probably not going to pass it down. You know, the next generation doesn’t even wear a watch. They’ve got an iPhone, so… or an iWatch, or an Apple Watch, I should say. So the reality is probably not something I’m going to pass along. You guys can work on that as well, right?
SPEAKER 04 :
Absolutely. And you get into some of those older Rolexes, and there are lots of times where we’re paying people
SPEAKER 11 :
more than what they paid for it probably yeah absolutely um you know depending on condition depending on if there’s boxes and papers and that kind of thing so yeah and let me really quick let me just add something to that too for those of you listening that have even an older rolex because i went through this i’ve got one i’m gonna have david appraise But I actually had one that belonged to my grandfather that my mom passed down. So it was passed to her, then passed to me. And I actually was looking at it maybe just because I thought, well, I’ll wear this. I’ll get it restored and wear it. I actually had a couple of different people look at it on the restoration side that said, even though it’s beat up and it’s not in great condition, it’s worth more the way it is right now than you restoring it, so don’t touch it. So there’s a thought for some of you where you may have had a thought of having something like that gone through. Ask David first before you think about doing that.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, indeed. You know, it’s almost like taking the patina off of an antique. Yeah, it’s always good to get things looked at before you let somebody else just tinker with it and mess with it and that kind of thing.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, because they may actually ruin its value by doing so. Or, how should I say this, highly depreciate its value. Maybe that’s a better way to say it. It might not ruin the value, but take it from what it was today and lower its value when it’s all said and done.
SPEAKER 04 :
You’ve got to be very careful, especially with the Rolex, because if you have a Rolex that’s under warranty and a… non-authorized dealer cracks that watch open or some pawn shop it is no longer and the warranty is gone so you want to be super super careful with what kind of time frame if people are out there listening they want to get in and do something is something you’re a few days out on or you’ve got pretty immediate openings where are we out on that usually three to four days out okay we’re we’re booked pretty pretty solid for three to four days um but yeah just call in and we schedule out a month or two months you know just depending on schedules and The way our office is set up, it’s private. It’s safe. You’re walking into a conference room. You’re not in a strip mall pawn shop where people are walking in and out and who’s watching you go in and carrying this and carrying that. So it’s a very pleasant environment.
SPEAKER 11 :
Makes total sense. All right, David Gonzalez, Mile High Coin, 720-370-3400. And don’t forget the website. You can always go to klzradio.com, rushtoreason.com, but also coinbuyers.com. CEO, any one of those ways, get a hold of them, take that collection in, find out what you want to do and get it appraised. And then at that point, at least you’ve got the knowledge of here’s what it’s worth. And then, you know what, sit down and decide what you want to do with it from that point forward. Absolutely. Always appreciate it. I learn something every time you’re here. All right, John.
SPEAKER 04 :
Thank you very much. Enjoyed it. Appreciate you.

SPEAKER 12 :
God. Country. Reason. Now back to John Rush.
SPEAKER 11 :
We are back. Louie, what’s going on, sir?
SPEAKER 03 :
Oh, I’m just sitting in traffic listening to your great radio show and wanted to call and say… A lot of kind words about David and Mile High Coin.
SPEAKER 11 :
Awesome. Well, A, I appreciate you calling in. I’m sure he does as well. And the more I get to know David, the more I like him and have learned from him. By the way, Louie, you know me. I’m always willing to learn and enjoy people that are genuine, which David very much is. And I appreciate him being a part of what we do here.
SPEAKER 03 :
Oh, absolutely. I was down there a couple weeks ago with a bunch of old stuff that I got from grandparents and parents and What have you. Unfortunately, we never had that antique roadshow Nirvana moment. But he did take very good care of us. And that little tiny bit of gold we had was worth more than all of the 1800 silver dollars. Wow. Wow. Yeah. Like he told me, he says, Louie, it’s just worth the silver. He says, that’s all it is. There are so many of these out there.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER 03 :
And, you know, these were all circulated coins.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right, right.
SPEAKER 03 :
But that being said, I was so comfortable with him with his open and honest appraisal and evaluations of and explanations thereof that, yeah, I just wanted to call and say I can’t say enough good about the man.
SPEAKER 11 :
Well, again, I appreciate you saying that, and again, the more I’ve gotten to know David and just have conversations with and so on, by the way, the more I’ve learned about a lot of these things, which I’ve had a few things going on, as you know, Louie, but I’ve got to stop long enough to put all of our collection together because I’m just like everybody else, Louie. I’ve got all sorts of stuff that has sort of been passed down, and you throw it in the safe, and it just keeps collecting and collecting, and I need to go through and dig out all of my stuff and do the same thing.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah. Yeah. I thought maybe some of those, what were they? Civil War, silver certificate, paper bills. I mean, they’re just old, I don’t know, $2 bills or whatever they were, but they’re Civil War. I thought, well, those got to be worth something. David said, they’re not even worth the paper. Wow.
SPEAKER 11 :
Good to know. Good to know. And that’s the knowledge that you need. As you know, Louie, it’s like you with everything that you do on the pinstriping end of things and so on. The knowledge factor is huge. And nothing worse than talking to somebody that just tries to snow their way, BS their way through something. And I appreciate David because he’s not that way at all. He’s very honest.
SPEAKER 03 :
You’re very honest, very honest, very open, very comfortable to deal with.
SPEAKER 11 :
That’s awesome. Well, I appreciate you calling in and saying that, Louie. I mean that sincerely. Thank you. And that wasn’t staged. I did not ask Louie to call in. That was all on you, Louie. So thank you.
SPEAKER 03 :
You’re welcome. Thank you much, John. All right, man. Have a wonderful podcast.
SPEAKER 11 :
I’ll do it, man. Appreciate you, Louie. Thank you very much. And there’s a great testimonial. And that was a good friend of mine. You guys have heard him on Drive Radio on Saturdays. Louie does all of my pinstriping on my cars and such. Just a great guy. And again, just like David, very down-to-earth, honest guy. Louie, call in and say that. It just gives you an idea of who you’re dealing with if you’ve got a collection of any kind and you’re just looking to know what value is. And again, no pressure. You can tell from David that there’s not going to be any pressure if you decide to not sell that. I mean, at David’s end of things, he’s just happy to help and get you a number so you know what to do from there. And then you can take that information and move forward with it. All right. Speaking of some things in the news, and I thought I’d start off today with this. I’ll get to the L.A. riots probably in the third hour, to be honest with you. I’ve got some guests and some folks joining us on the front side. I want to spend a little bit of time on that because that’s a large subject that is, I mean, a lot of people think it’s just cut and dried. And it is for the most part. But there’s a lot of facets to it, the National Guard and so on, that I want to get into. So I want to have plenty of time to do that. But I thought I’d squeeze in here. We’ve got a special guest joining us here. at 330, but Greta Thunberg, who most of you know who she is. She was the young gal that for a while was, you know, you see the clips all around about, you know, her and climate change and, you know, we’re in an existential threat of it. Yeah, how dare you? You know, she’s talking to the adults and so on. I mean, you can go out and see the clip of her, and if you don’t know who she is, you will once you see that clip because it’s been circulated literally everywhere. You know, she, for the most part, is a household name because of that particular event, that particular thing she was speaking at. She was at some conference when she was speaking at and said that. And just so everybody knows, too, Greta has been groomed, is that the right way to say it, Charlie, by her parents on the whole, you know, environmental end of things and groomed in the wrong way because she’s very un, how should I say this, uninformed, not uneducated because she’s educated but just in the wrong way, but she’s very uninformed about on a lot of the things that she talks about. And unfortunately, because of her age, she doesn’t know one side versus the other. She’s literally just repeating what she’s been pumped full of by her parents. And those of you that are on the left, if you think I’m wrong, prove me wrong, because I’m not. That’s exactly what Greta has done. It’s where her opinions have been formed from. I highly doubt even in her early 20s now, what is she like 20 or 21, I want to say, Charlie, she still has not really had a chance to form her own opinions at this point in time. So in turn, She thought, by the way, shows how uninformed she is. She thought she would get on a ship, a boat, if you would, and head on over to Gaza, to the Gaza Strip. And she was going to go there to help the Hamas relief effort, I guess you could say, which I have a hard time even saying, by the way. You guys all know my feeling on the whole Hamas situation, and this is where I and a lot of other Christians, by the way, will differ greatly. I’ve got some folks that I have even… I guess is the way for me to say it, that are in the Christian community that are so dead set on the fact that, you know, Israel hasn’t done right by Gaza that I have quit. I’m no longer on social media. I’m no longer a friend of theirs. And I would have a hard time being a friend of theirs, period. And, yes, these are the sorts of things that I – We’ll get divided over not too many things. I normally will let politics and those sorts of things, you know, sort of go by the wayside. But when it comes to these sorts of things to where you’re going to now be on the side of a terrorist organization, which is Hamas. And don’t come back at me, well, it’s not Hamas, it’s the people of. It’s the same thing, folks. It’s the same thing. They voted for it. They got it. They’re a part of it. And you will be hard-pressed to convince me otherwise. So even these Christians that will run around, conservative Christians, I’ve even seen them on, again, I’ve seen them on social media talk about how tragic it is and what’s happening today. and what Israel’s doing that’s wrong, and the fact that we’re helping Israel, we’re just as wrong, and the whole Free Palestine movement. It’s all a bunch of hooey. It’s a bunch of nonsense. Now, you’ve got Greta Thunberg running over there, who she was going to basically chime in and do the exact same thing. Well, not so fast. Not so fast. She, her boat, and I was watching a lot of social media about this yesterday, but her boat was intercepted and boarded by Israel. In other words, you’re not doing this. We’re not going to allow you to do this. And man alive, I read so many things on social media yesterday that, you know, Israel is awful and she’s been kidnapped and this, that, and the other. And at first I’m thinking, we couldn’t get that lucky. to have her kidnapped, but she’s not kidnapped. She, yes, has been detained by Israel, by the Israeli forces, and she’s not going to be allowed to carry on and do what she was initially planning on doing. And I am one that says I am very much okay with that. I am very much okay with that. She, again, is a very uninformed young person that really doesn’t have any idea what she’s doing, And getting a lot of publicity out of it, and then you’ve got a bunch of knuckleheads out there that think that she’s doing everything the right way, and they’re now going to somehow feel sorry for her. And these are, once again, very uninformed, and I’ll just say it as it is, racist individuals that have no idea what they’re talking about. None. None. Because if you really look at the entire situation, which we’ve talked about on this program since Hamas invaded Israel, we’ve been talking about that now for two years. This October, it’ll be two years, I believe, right, Charlie? It’s two years in October, yes. So well over a year we’ve been talking about it, a year and a half. And there’s nothing that Hamas ever does, in my opinion, that’s good. They use their people as human shields. They use their schools and hospitals for their headquarters. They do all sorts of things that are just frankly not cool, not kosher at all. And at the end of the day, they are in the wrong. And I said it from the get-go. I would have wiped them off the map. That place wouldn’t exist today. By this time, I would have already wiped it off, dozed it over, and I’d have something else there by now if I was in charge. And a lot of people, you know, I’ve had people even on air come back and say, well, what about all of the innocent people? They’re not. They’re not. Sorry, you’re not going to convince me that they’re innocent. They’re not innocent. They stayed. They’ve decided to stay there for whatever reason. And the reality is, no, they’re not innocent. They could have gotten out of there. So you could have escaped. You could have done any – and by the way, if it means you have to escape, what does that tell you the type of government you live under? So reality is they voted for these knuckleheads. They got what they voted for. They’re there now, and they were a part of what happened. I firmly believe they were a part of what happened against Israel on that October day. So the reality is I have no sympathy whatsoever. So you’re not going to convince me otherwise, so don’t even try because – These people that are on the other side, the Greta Thunbergs of the world. And we know Greta’s very uninformed already when it comes to the whole client activism things that she’s involved in. But add to that this, she’s really, really uninformed when it’s all said and done. Dr. Scott Faulkner coming up next, who’s not uninformed, by the way, when it comes to things regarding your health and your health care. And it really is health care with Dr. Scott. SPEAKER 11 :
Michael Bailey, we just talked to David Gonzalez from Mile High Coin about collections and things like that that have value. Well, guess what? You also need an estate to determine where those items would go if, in fact, you decide to keep said item. So talk to Michael Bailey today. He is our mobile estate planner. Find him at klzradio.com.

When it comes to your estate, you really don’t want to leave things up to luck. Michael Bailey doesn’t rely on chance. He relies on solid, thorough planning and getting to know you as you develop your plan together. That’s because a good estate plan isn’t about luck. It’s about wisdom, preparation, and making sure your family is protected no matter what. Think about it. When you pass on, will you leave your family to guess what to do with your possessions, investments, and other assets? Or would you want to make those instructions very clear so your family can know your final wishes in detail? That’s what an estate plan does. It’s not about luck. It’s about making sure what you want to happen is followed, your assets are protected, and your family isn’t left searching for answers. Rely on solid planning from Michael Bailey, not good luck charms. Find the mobile estate planner Michael Bailey on the klzradio.com advertisers page to make sure your last wishes are followed.
SPEAKER 12 :
The best export we have is common sense. You’re listening to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 11 :
All right, somebody asked a moment ago, too, who was on with me earlier talking about coins and jewelry and gold and all that. Again, David Gonzalez, mile-high coin. His number, 720-370-3400. Again, 720-370-3400. 3-4-0-0. You can also find him at klzradio.com. It’s Mile High Coin or my website as well, rushtoreason.com. He’s listed there as well. And again, heard a great testimonial from one of my good friends, Louie, on all the things that David does, which we appreciate. Greatly. All right. We got our next guest. We’re trying to get rounded up. If not, we’re going to continue on. Regardless, we have somebody who was going to come on and talk about digital coin and cryptocurrency and things that are kind of opposite, by the way, of what we were talking to David about, because those are hard assets. Not that crypto isn’t, but… They’re not. It’s not the same. I don’t care what anybody says. Not the same as hard, tangible assets you hold in your hand. Cryptocurrency is one of those items that you frankly you can see its value, but you never see it. It’s all digital. There is no hard asset there. And I know some people would argue with me on that and that that is not the case. So it is not a quote unquote asset. hard asset and looks like our guest is not going to be available anyways we’re going to talk about cryptocurrency i you guys all know my feelings on this as i talk to different people not a big crypto guy now some out there are and i’m not i’m not against it and i really want to say that it’s to each his own I’m not somebody that has ever invested a lot of money into crypto. I have a very little bit just so I can keep tabs on what it does, you know, day in and day out and bought crypto years ago. I mean, way before even 2020. I want to say all the way back, probably 2013, 2014, something like that when things first kind of got started. No, I didn’t go out and buy crypto. a boatload. So it’s not worth a boatload today. So no, I’m not one of those individuals that bought a coin, which I guess if I hadn’t cashed in, I’d be a lot better off. But I didn’t. I wasn’t one of those individuals, again, because I’m not I’m still to this day, still not a big believer in a lot of people. could have bought early sold today cashed in and yes it’s real cash and yes they could have cashed in because there’s somebody else willing to buy you know their currency but i look at crypto differently than a lot of other folks do and you guys can do whatever it is you feel like you need to do again it’s one of those that’s kind of teach its own i i’ve always looked at crypto and people argue with me and say that i’m not correct in this but i’ve always looked at crypto as as Its value is based upon what people believe it should be doing. Now, some would say, well, that’s no different than the dollar. Well, it is a lot different than the dollar. The value of the dollar is based upon all sorts of things, including our overall economy, what’s happening with imports and exports, and even the dollar can affect that, which then has an effect upon the dollar. So lots of facets coming and going when it comes to the value of the dollar. Our debt, for example, as a country, has a big effect on it. And sometimes, well, not sometimes, typically what happens in crypto is as our dollar weakens, crypto will get stronger. And the opposite also happens. If our dollar increases, crypto will typically go down. Crypto is very, very volatile. It’s probably the biggest reason why I’ve never been one to invest a lot of money into it because while you can make a lot with it, you can lose a lot. The other thing about crypto that you have to be extremely careful of, in my opinion, is there is so many crypto scams that are out there. I was reading something today. I actually sent this on to my wife because I was just, I mean, I’m chuckling at it, but I should be crying. I was reading an article, Wall Street Journal. It’s talking about pig farms, not the type of pig farm that we typically think of with pig farm. Pig farming in the sense of cryptocurrency and scams and so on is they’re trying to find, quote, unquote, the pig. And there’s multiple ways they do that. And then they try to extract out of that pig, that person, all that they can. It’s called pig farming. It’s not making bacon in pork chops. That’s not the type of pig farming here that we’re talking about. Pig farming, in regards to what I’m talking about, are the scams that happen all over the world. And up until recently, they were all run through one particular organization called that handled sort of the money end of things and even the money laundering of it. And I was reading an article about a particular gentleman that, I’m not exaggerating, had been fleeced for $1.6 and then another $1.4, so $3 million. $3 million. Not $300,000, not $30,000, $3 million. It was all of his life savings, older gentleman. And the way it works is somebody comes along and they send him a message through social media, Facebook, or even an errant text message. And they start this relationship. And it’s all done, by the way, very slick. And sleek, it’s all fake. The person sending you the messages and sending you pictures and so on is not the particular individual. But I am not exaggerating. These people will – I’ve read many a story on this. And they will spend days, weeks, months – building a relationship with someone where they’re trying to build the trust they’ll have conversations and you know they’ll exchange photographs and things along those lines and and at the end of the day that person on the other end is not real they prey on the emotions of others They do their best to find people that are wealthy. And a lot of the conversations will go along those lines. You know, what do you do? You know, what do you do for fun? What are your hobbies? And by the way, a lot of those answers to, you know, what do I do for a job and what I do for hobbies are a hint into your life and telling that other person your value, your net worth. For example, if you’re somebody that is CEO of whatever company, okay, there’s one hint. Or you’re a business owner, there’s another hint. Or you’re… Your hobbies are you play a lot of golf and you like to travel. Well, golf isn’t cheap. That’s a more expensive sport, and traveling definitely is. So you get my drift. Or you like boating, or you like this, or you like that. And they’ll prey on those particular individuals and are trying to gather as much information in the fact-finding stages early on so they can actually build that relationship and at the end of the day take your money. And again, money. The reason I’m talking about this is because it all surrounds itself around cryptocurrency. And they will even go as far as to tell you that they’ve got a family member. In this particular case, the gal told this particular man that her uncle was big in crypto and had some inside edge on crypto and, quote, unquote, the tokens that you can buy that give you some assurance that you’re going to make money with crypto and on and on we go. And it’s all a scam. Every single bit of it is a scam. And at the end of the day, this particular person did all of the things that they asked. And of course, after he realized the mistake that he made, no longer. You know, can’t get a hold of that particular person. They ghost you is what they call it. And that person ghosted this particular gentleman that lost all of the money. He went ahead and went to the FBI. The FBI did everything possible they could to try to regain the money. They may at times be able to get some money back because crypto is all blockchain and they can’t figure out exactly where the money went. But again, if that money has gone someplace overseas and it’s been laundered, and that’s what was happening in this particular article, There was a particular company that was in charge of laundering the majority of that money. They since have been not necessarily shut down, but they’re no longer allowed to operate with other banks inside of the U.S. So that’s one plus that came out of this particular story I was reading today. But, again, part of maybe my – Being against cryptocurrency is because of how many people can get scammed with it so easily. There are even, this is an article, I mentioned this to you guys a couple of weeks ago, there’s even cryptocurrency ATM type machines where you can go feed it $100 bills buying crypto that then gets sent on to somebody who’s trying to scam you. So my point with all of this is be extremely careful. Be very vigilant and determined in anybody that reaches out to you, especially if it’s somebody that you don’t know. And unfortunately, these particular individuals will prey on those that are older. Not old, but older that are most likely single or they’ve been divorced or they’re widowed or whatever the case may be. And they prey on those particular individuals. And by the way, they can get your name from all sorts of places. Believe it or not, your name and phone number is listed. A lot of different places. Between all of the leaks that have happened over the years with not only financial institutions but health clubs and the like, your name and phone number is most likely already on the dark web, probably being sold as we speak. They’ve got the ability to reach out with that information, and they do. And as they do, they will target certain individuals. Keep in mind, not only is your name associated with your phone number, but who you are and some of that information is also associated with that. And when these people are buying these lists, they’re not just buying a name and a phone number. They’re buying identities. And in some cases, enough where they could steal your identity. But they’re really buying that information on you, your value, your net worth, where you live, all of those sorts of things. And I’m sorry to say, but they’re targeting those that are bigger fish in the sea versus those that are minnows. They’re going after the quote-unquote whales. They’re not going after the minnows. So if you are somebody that has some means, you have found yourself recently divorced, you found yourself recently widowed, and by the way, this is for both sides of the aisle, male or female. It’s not just the male side. This can go both ways, male or female, and they will target you in all these different ways. My point is be extremely, extremely careful. Do not be lured in. Nobody out there that you’ve never known before is trying to be your friend. Meeting by chance does not happen. They are targeting you. They didn’t just send you a wrong number text. No, that was sent on purpose. They’re trying to target you. And how do I know that? I get errant text messages quite often. My wife and I all laugh about it. And sometimes I’ll play along with them for a day or two until I get tired and then I just delete them and off I go. But sometimes I’ll just fire right off. I’ll fire right back and say, if you’re interested in doing X, Y, Z, if you’re somebody that’s trying to scam me from crypto and this, that and the other, and I’ll name off all the different ways that you can be scammed with crypto. It’s amazing how fast they go away. They don’t even respond. A lot of times it’s a one text message exchange and they’re gone. And the reason for that is because they know you’re smart enough. You’re not going to get scammed. Why are they going to waste their time with you any longer? Now, sometimes I’ll waste my time and I don’t look at it that way. I’ll explain. Sometimes I’ll waste my time for two or three days with some of these people. And my wife and I will laugh about some of the messages that go back and forth. And it’s all of what I just talked about. Who are you? What do you do? What are your hobbies? This, that, and the other. And here’s why I’ll do that. The longer I keep them on the hook and they’re talking to me, there’s one less person out there they’re trying to scam. And maybe I’m looking at it the wrong way, but I look at it that way. And I don’t waste a ton of time, and my wife knows that because I don’t have a lot of extra time. But I will play with them a little bit here and there because I’m not joking. I’ll get one or two of those a week. Not joking. One or two a week. Just an inherent, you know, out of the blue, you know, are you going to meet me for dinner tonight? Blah, blah, blah. And you’ll get those kind of messages also where they act like they’re sending a message to their friend, but you’re not their friend, of course, because they know you’re not your friend. And by the way, sometimes if I’m in a really bad mood, I’ll respond with you’re not that stupid to send a message to a random stranger because it really was your friend. You would have had all of that input and you don’t you don’t text the wrong number the way we do things today in our phones. Sometimes I’ll even respond that way if I’m not in a good mood and if I don’t want to be bothered. And by the way, you won’t hear from them again because they already know, oh, they’re on to me. This person’s on to me. So, again, and the thing you always have to keep in the back of your mind is it’s not anywhere close to the person that, you know, sometimes they’ll even send you a picture right off the bat. It’s never that person that you’re talking to. It’s usually some, and I’ve talked about this before, it’s usually somebody that’s enslaved. Literally, they’re enslaved to work for these companies that are trying to scam you out of money. Could be male, could be female, could be young, could be old, but it’s never the person that they’re sending you a picture of telling you who they are. So that’s a little PSA for today. Kind of goes along with the whole cryptocurrency thing, mainly because that’s their method. That’s what they will get down to to try to steal your money because rarely, rarely will they ever ask you to send them a check. That’s just not going to happen. They’re doing it in other ways whereby you can never get your money back. So point being, be extremely careful. If you’re into crypto and you know how it works and you’re on your own and can do it on your own, more power to you. That’s up to you, and you’re the one that’s in charge of all of that. But just don’t be scammed by anybody anywhere, especially those of you that maybe have had some – It’s a misfortune. And what I mean by that is you’ve had a divorce or you’ve had a loss. You know, a spouse has been lost. You’re a widow now. Please, please, please be extremely, extremely careful. And here’s what I will tell you. Here’s what I will do for you. If you think you’re being scammed, send me a text message and ask me what my thoughts are. You could even send me a screenshot of some of the messages that you’re having, and I can tell you right off the bat whether you’re being scammed or not. And nine times out of ten, you are. So if you ever have somebody that you need to reach out to to tell you whether you’re being scammed or not, I can do that for you. I’d be more than happy to. Just send me a text message off our text line, and I would be happy to help you. The last thing I want to see is any – I read the story today about this particular older gentleman being scammed out of $3 million. It just breaks your heart because that money will never be recovered. That poor man now is without his $3 million retirement that he had probably worked his entire life for, and it’s extremely, extremely disheartening. But, yes, there are people out there that will do that in a heartbeat. So up next, Cub Creek heating and air conditioning. If you’ve got a problem at all this week, it’s going to be hot. Now back to Rush to Reason on KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 11 :
All right. We are back. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 516. I appreciate you all listening. Somebody also asked if I would talk about or explain the U.S. dollar being fiat currency. And yes, it is. Fiat currency is currency that will adjust with, honestly, in some cases, just a whim. And it does. Sometimes our dollar will change based upon currency. Wall Street, inflation, things along those lines. And yes, it’s very much that way. As much as I wish it would go back to the gold standard, we haven’t been on the gold standard since, gosh, the 70s. I don’t see us going back to the gold standard ever. I believe it was 1971 is when we actually went off the gold standard. And keep in mind, I wasn’t super old at the time. So personally, I can’t really remember. I didn’t really know enough in 1971. I mean, I was, what, seven years of age or so was all. So I mean— I mean, there’s a lot of seven-year-olds that might understand that. I was doing other things, and granted, I started working when I was about nine or ten with a paper route and started realizing what money probably was at that point and so on. But no, I will tell you, in 1971, I wasn’t too concerned about… whether we were on the gold standard or off the gold standard. Charlie, you’re older than me, but you probably weren’t much different even at your age in 1971. So there’s a lot of you listening that might be older, might be in your 70s or 80s that can remember some of those. But the majority of you guys as listeners, you don’t even remember when we were on the gold standard. So we haven’t really been on it for a very, very long time, decades. And I can tell you, if there’s one thing I can pretty much assure you of, we’re not going back on it. Now, that’s the selling feature that a lot of the Bitcoin folks or the cryptocurrency guys, and there’s more than just Bitcoin. I shouldn’t just say it that way because there’s Bitcoin, there’s Ethereum, there’s all sorts. And there’s a lot of them I wouldn’t invest a nickel in. If I was going to own anything at all, it would be Bitcoin. And that’s what I do own. I don’t own anything else. And a lot of the folks that are in the crypto side will tell you that because of our fiat currency as a country, that that’s the only stable currency out there. I would disagree with that, by the way, because that’s not true either. Because keep in mind, crypto is not based on anything either. Faith. Faith. That’s it. And if you can prove to me otherwise, I’m all ears. But cryptocurrency is literally based upon faith and faith alone, faith that that currency will have some value. I get it. Nobody has to explain to me that where it gets its value is there’s a limited supply of and blah, blah, blah. I know all that. I’ve interviewed a bunch of different people on the crypto sides of things on this program. So I understand how it works. I understand the mining aspect of it even. I’ve even watched some of the guys that mine crypto, and that’s a whole other conversation in and of itself. So I understand how crypto works. doesn’t mean that it’s any better at the end of the day than the U.S. dollar. That’s my point. And here’s where I’ve always gone when it comes to the U.S. dollar versus crypto. And so far, no one’s ever proven me otherwise. I can take a $100 bill of Benjamin anywhere in the entire world. I can go anywhere on this planet, and I can exchange that $100 bill for pretty much anything I want in goods or services. There might be a rare exception where that can’t happen, but it is extremely rare. I can literally travel all around the entire world with a $100 bill and cash it in. That’s how valuable that $100 bill is worldwide. Can you do that with crypto? No, not really. I mean, you can go around the world and spend crypto depending upon where you’re at and their understanding of, but can I go to a village in Africa where they don’t even have internet connection and spend crypto? No. Can I spend $100 a bill? Absolutely I can, all day long. They would welcome that in a heartbeat. In fact, you could spend a $5 bill and be just fine there. And how do I know that? I’ve done it. I’ve done it. So anybody out there, the day that you can’t spend a Benjamin worldwide, that’s the day I’d start to fear. That is not the case of where we’re at today. And frankly, I don’t see that in the near future even because that $100 bill still has a lot of value on a worldwide basis. All right, Paul Leuenberger, when it comes to insurance, we started talking today about coins and valuables and collections and so on. Keep in mind, that has to be insured as well or should be insured depending upon how you’re storing it. Somebody also asked in a text message, where is Mile High Coin located? So if you’re looking to do something with your collection, he is not that far from us here at the station.
