Join us for an engaging Drive Radio episode where we spotlight significant shifts in automotive tools and tactics. Following a light-hearted father’s day exchange, we delve into the greening of tools and how battery technology has revolutionized the industry from handheld devices to fully electric vehicles. Our discourse expands into political decisions impacting automotive regulations and market dynamics, with a sharp focus on the expectation vs. reality of electric vehicle viability. As we celebrate the tradition of craftsmanship handed down through generations, we probe what lies ahead for car enthusiasts and the industry at large in this ever-evolving auto
SPEAKER 14 :
Being an expert on general automotive knowledge, what would the correct ignition timing be on a 1955 Bel Air Chevrolet with a 327 cubic inch engine and a four barrel carburetor?
SPEAKER 24 :
It is a trick question. Watch this. Because Chevy didn’t make a 327 in 55. The 327 didn’t come out until 62. And it wasn’t offered in the Bel Air with a four-barrel carb until 64. However, in 1964, the correct ignition timing would be four degrees before top dead center.
SPEAKER 04 :
Get ready for another hour of Drive Radio, brought to you by Colorado’s select auto care centers. Got a question for the experts? Then give them a call, 303-477-5600. Now it’s time to pop the hood and get our hands dirty. Drive Radio on KLZ 560 The Source.
SPEAKER 07 :
And it is Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Thanks for listening. We appreciate it very much. Lines are full. As soon as somebody drops off, give us a call. We’ll get you right on air. Text line, don’t forget, 307-200-8222. Again, 307-200-8222. Of course, Charlie Grimes, our engineer today, Larry Younger answering phones, and Pat Schneidt joining us from Alltech Automotive up in Fort Collins as well. Buck, you are next, though. Go ahead, sir.
SPEAKER 12 :
Good morning, and I want to wish you guys happy Father’s Day.
SPEAKER 09 :
Happy Father’s Day, Buck. Thank you. Thank you, Buck. Happy Father’s Day.
SPEAKER 12 :
And I talked to Larry, and he said he’s a grandfather, so I’ll even go as far as I don’t think you may be a grandfather, but happy Grandfather’s Day, too.
SPEAKER 07 :
I am. Thank you, Buck. Appreciate that.
SPEAKER 12 :
I got a few myself. You got a couple items here. You mentioned what my dad taught me. And my dad was pretty handy. Back in the 50s, cars were a lot simpler and equipment was a lot simpler. But he taught me some basic mechanics. And then he was a pretty good carpenter. He taught me a lot of carpentry and plumbing and stuff like that.
SPEAKER 07 :
Nice.
SPEAKER 12 :
And so I got out of that stuff. And he also taught me that when you do a job, you do it right.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yep. Yes. Yep. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 12 :
I had to learn that the hard way a couple times.
SPEAKER 07 :
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 12 :
There’s a party or two I’d like to go to because I didn’t do it right the first time. But the message got through.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yep.
SPEAKER 12 :
The other thing you’re talking about, old tools and whatnot, I have a problem. I’m a hoarder.
SPEAKER 07 :
You and a lot of others, Buck. You’re not alone, by the way.
SPEAKER 12 :
I have some of my grandfather’s tools. Of course, they’re antique now, so I have an excuse for them. But the way the tools have changed, I went to air about 30 years ago, and that was a cat’s meow. But now with all of the battery-powered stuff and the good-quality battery-powered stuff, I bought a 12-volt tool
SPEAKER 07 :
way back what 40 years ago and they didn’t last very long but the new stuff is by top quality absolutely yeah absolutely yeah i’m glad you said that buck it has changed so much from what it used to be that and again that all comes from battery technology which is affecting a lot of the things that we do from handheld devices cell phones laptops electric cars on down the line we go the battery technology has changed immensely
SPEAKER 12 :
And with the change in technology, the change in technology in vehicles has required me to update what I use to work on things. And as Pat and you well know, some of that stuff is kind of expensive.
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, that’s it. Yes, very expensive.
SPEAKER 12 :
You know, when you talk about people charging $200 an hour or $150 an hour, It’s pretty expensive to work on a car. Well, it was back 50 years ago, but then you could do a lot of it with a pair of pliers and a screwdriver and a crescent wrench.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 12 :
And now you’ve got to buy a fairly expensive scan tool to even get started on them. You can buy some cheaper ones.
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, it’s funny with the advent of front-wheel drive and the transverse-mounted engines now. You can get to the front three spark plugs. You can’t get to the back without taking off about two hours’ worth of stuff.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah. And of course, they keep cramming it together tighter. That’s right. A lot of the new pickups, you have to pull the body off in order to work on anything.
SPEAKER 09 :
That’s right.
SPEAKER 12 :
You’re right. Yes. So the other thing is when you’re buying tools, I’ve got some of the tools that I use from some of the cheaper places. But when you get to buying technical tools, I will give you an example. I needed to check the fuel pressure on a newer car, and I had an old OTC fuel injection test kit from probably back in the 80s. And I didn’t have the right adapters, so I went to one of the cheaper discount places and bought me a fuel pump checker. And it was kind of funny. I was running it. It would show real high pressure, but I couldn’t get any volume. But it still maintained the pressure. And I finally got to digging into it. They had a series of quick connects, and they were all screwed up. And I got the gauge off of my old one, took the quick connects off and threw them away, and I solved my problem.
SPEAKER 09 :
Nice. It was just restricted flow.
SPEAKER 12 :
It would pump high pressure as long as you weren’t flowing anything to it. And what was happening, my gauge would go over there at the high pressure… And then it wouldn’t reset when you let the fuel out. So I spent about three hours figuring that out. But anyway, I want to wish you guys, again, Happy Father’s Day. Again, I really enjoy your programs. And I guess other than that, it’s a… Chamber of Commerce Day up here in Cheyenne.
SPEAKER 07 :
Absolutely. Well, Buck, thank you. I appreciate that. Happy Father’s Day to you as well. We appreciate you very much. Thank you.
SPEAKER 12 :
Okay. Goodbye.
SPEAKER 07 :
All right, Buck. Take care. You bet. Have a good one. Bob, you are next. Go ahead, Bob.
SPEAKER 17 :
Hey, let me start by, I had a question, but let me start by saying this. Happy birthday, U.S. Army. That affects me. Yep, absolutely. Happy birthday, Donald John Trump. I’m so happy we have him. He’s 79 today.
SPEAKER 22 :
Yep, nice.
SPEAKER 17 :
He’s sharper than any other 79-year-old I’ve ever known.
SPEAKER 07 :
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 17 :
Speaking of Trump, Thursday he signed that EO executive order precluding California from exceeding any EPA. That’s right. over and above the feds. And, you know, of course, Colorado, anytime California does anything, we jump right on.
SPEAKER 07 :
That’s right. So that affects us as well.
SPEAKER 17 :
They have some form of what the California EPAs are doing. And I suspect, this is my suspicion, and I think it’s going to be true, General Motors, Ford, and Solantis, the two-and-a-half big three… They are going to abandon their EV program, and they’re probably going to copy Toyota with hybrids. I have no issue with hybrids. I think that’s a good technology, and Toyota has perfected it. But I’m wondering if this is going to affect things like now Colorado. They were talking about landscapers and even home gardeners. You know, anything you bought, a lawnmower, a snowblower, a leaf blower, it had to be electric instead of – and I know you like some electric stuff. But if you’re a landscaping company, that can kind of work for you.
SPEAKER 07 :
No, it’s not.
SPEAKER 17 :
So no, it won’t.
SPEAKER 07 :
I mean, we’ve we’ve tested some of that stuff out in the past, even, you know, from mowers to we were a kind of a beta site for Makita for a while on doing backpack blowers that were electric and so on. And yeah, Bob, it’s just it’s just they’re not at that stage where it works. It can’t they won’t run long enough in the amount of effort and time and money it takes to outfit, you know, a trailer to have charge capabilities and so on. It’s just in maybe others. Yeah. Others would disagree because there’s lawn services out there that run this EV scheme. That’s what I call it. It’s a racket. It’s a marketing thing where they’re, you know, telling you they’re going to be greener by cutting your grass with, you know, an electric mower and so on. Bob, it’s not worth it. It’s not cost effective. And those companies come and go because they can’t make it work either because it’s just, again, it’s not cost effective. You can’t do it.
SPEAKER 17 :
Yeah, I quit doing my own yard work when I turned 70, so five years ago. And the company that I have, they’re great. They show up on schedule. They come in here. They do everything that would have taken me a half an hour to do. They do it in 15 minutes, and they’re gone. Right. So the other thing is Colorado, I don’t know if you know this, but, you know, if those things stand – We’re not going to be able to have either a charcoal, you know, plain old lump charcoal, or a propane outdoor gas grill. I don’t know. I don’t think that EO that Trump did, I don’t think he addressed things like that.
SPEAKER 07 :
I’m going to talk about that this week, and I have not read through that yet, but I will.
SPEAKER 17 :
That’s pretty lengthy. But I think in April, the Senate took care of that. Remember the controversy? You couldn’t have any… uh gas uh water heaters or furnaces uh unless they were you know if you had to replace them you had to go to electric right pumps and stuff and everything in my house is gas my i got a double oven gas stove top gas water heater gas furnace gas you know so i don’t know what that how that’s going to shake out. But I think that the only true EV cars that are going to be around are going to be Teslas. And I don’t think that Tesla is a car company. I think it’s a technology and a robotic company.
SPEAKER 07 :
It’s all of those, and keep in mind, Bob, so it’s a technology company, but it’s driven more towards data collection. So it’s really a big, you know, Tesla’s a big data collection company is what it really is at the end of the day. Yeah, they’re making electric cars, but they are collecting data on all their drivers as we speak.
SPEAKER 09 :
And using that to further their artificial intelligence algorithms.
SPEAKER 07 :
And selling that data to other, you know, people don’t realize this, but that data is being sold, you know, shopping patterns, driving patterns, all that stuff is being sold all over the marketplace, Bob.
SPEAKER 17 :
Yeah, but there’s a handful of other car companies that are pure EVs. They’ll be gone.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, I’m not going to argue there. I will argue with you, and I guess we’ll see who’s right, you or I. GM especially. Ford, maybe. GM is not going to abandon its EV end of things. Sorry, they’re going to be around for a long time. They are in it, if nothing else, just for the contest against Tesla. They’re not going anywhere on their EVs.
SPEAKER 17 :
Well, they’re still losing on every unit.
SPEAKER 07 :
Doesn’t matter. They made so much money last year, Bob. They were the number one car company in America last year, and they made a boatload of money. They’re not abandoning it.
SPEAKER 17 :
In totality, but how much did they make per unit of EVs?
SPEAKER 07 :
They didn’t. They lost money, but they still made money overall, so they’re not going anywhere with their EVs. Don, you’re a business person. I’m not in charge, though, Bob. That’s the difference between me and them. Mary Barra, their board, and so on, they are not you and I. I would abandon it. I would have never done it to begin with, but reality is I’m not in charge. They are.
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, they’ve got another reason. Either they’re learning something from it or they’ve got a light at the end of the tunnel. They’re not throwing money away for no reason, but we just don’t know what that reason is.
SPEAKER 07 :
No, and a lot of it is because they’re, I hate to say this, but they’re really going after the political end of things, and General Motors isn’t dumb on that end of things either. But, no, they lost money on every EV they sold. They still are losing money on every EV they sell. But, Bob, this is where you and I will differ. They’re not going to abandon them. They’ve got new models coming out as we speak. They’re not abandoning anything.
SPEAKER 17 :
Well, their new models were pre-Thursday.
SPEAKER 07 :
Doesn’t matter. They’re still going to make them, Bob. And part of that is because there is still some market share. You know, again, Tesla hasn’t gone anywhere. And, yes, even if mandates go away and even subsidies go away, there will be certain buyers that buy EVs, period, just because of what they are, the performance side and so on. Will they sell the same amount? This is even another conversation regarding Tesla. Will they sell the same amount they have been in the past when the subsidies go away? Probably not. I don’t think they will, no. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER 17 :
Well, we’ll see. I don’t know.
SPEAKER 07 :
But last year, General Motors had a record profit of $15 billion. Oh, my gosh. That’s even with losing money on EVs. So, yeah, they’re doing fine.
SPEAKER 12 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. And that was with $187 billion in sales. So, yeah, even with their loss on EVs, they still made $15 billion last year.
SPEAKER 17 :
Well, they would have made more if they didn’t lose on EVs.
SPEAKER 07 :
They would have. That’s right. But, again, they’re still doing it.
SPEAKER 17 :
All those electric Corvettes selling.
SPEAKER 07 :
What’s that?
SPEAKER 17 :
How are those electric Corvettes selling?
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, actually very well. I mean, if you order an E-Ray, you’re going to be on a waiting list, so you won’t get it right away. It’s a hybrid. It’s not really an EV. It’s a hybrid version, just like what a lot of the other hypercars are doing. Ferrari’s got them and so on, so they’re not the only ones doing that either. Yeah, well, okay. Thanks, John. You bet. Take care. Appreciate you very much. We’ll take a break. Thelma, hang tight. We’ll come right back to you. We’ve got lines open, 303-477-5600. Drive Radio, KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 01 :
Air conditioning season is starting in Colorado. Are you ready? Take advantage of Geno’s Auto’s air conditioning recharge special. Is your vehicle’s air conditioning ready to keep you cool on hot Colorado days? We all know how fast Colorado can heat up. The refrigerant in your air conditioning system gets contaminants, evaporates, and breaks down over time. That refrigerant needs to be able to absorb heat to be able to cool your vehicle’s interior. Geno’s uses a cooling machine that takes out the old refrigerant and cleans it. Then they put the clean refrigerant back, topping off with Freon at the right level. To make your life simpler, Geno’s offers loaner vehicles so you can drop your car off and pick up when ready. We back up our work with Napa’s nationwide 36-month, 36,000-mile warranty. Stay cool this summer by making sure your system is up to date and ready for this year’s summer heat. Give us a call or go online to schedule an appointment. We’re AAA approved and located at Bowles and Platt Canyon. Stop in or visit us online at genosautoservice.com.
SPEAKER 03 :
Here’s why you need personal injury attorney Kevin Flesch on your side. He understands the way the jury thinks. In the context of a personal injury case, you’ve been hurt by someone else’s negligence. The idea is that you’re going to try to recover so that you can get back to where you were just prior to that incident occurring. What that really means from a jurist’s perspective is that you’re going to be asking them to award you money. So when we talk about fairness, we’re talking about six people that you don’t know. Those six people view the evidence and make a unanimous decision that will decide what the fair value is. When you’re the one who’s hurt, you have a good idea of what you think it’s worth. The question is, can you persuade those other individuals whom you don’t know and were witnesses to believe that’s what the case is worth? Kevin Flesch understands the way the jury thinks. SPEAKER 10 :
Thank you for taking my call, and I want to wish everybody, every father a happy Father’s Day, whether they be… Our father, our grandfather, our great-grandfather, all of them.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, thank you, Thelma. Very kind of you. Thank you very much.
SPEAKER 10 :
I had an accident with my 02 Tacoma Toyota. Okay. And I would like to sell the part off of it if someone would be interested in… Getting parked or whatever.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. And I remember talking to you not long ago. You replaced that truck with something else, right?
SPEAKER 10 :
Yes, I did. I tried Ridge Land or whatever it was. I called them, and they told me they had one, but it was a little bit more. And then I called them back and asked them what kind of deal could they give me with – if I paid for it cash and I was a veteran. And they said, we’ll call you right back. And I never heard from them.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. So what did you end up buying?
SPEAKER 10 :
I got an old 17 Dakota with a camp on the back.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 10 :
it and they gave me a good deal okay good okay awesome okay so and how badly uh wrecked is the o2 in other words what you know what kind of parts are left on it that are still good and all of that well they went the the wreck was one of the craziest things i ever seen they went they were going north i was going south, and I was going into the intersection going south, and they were speeding about 30 miles too fast. And when they hit me, they hit me on the right side where the light is.
SPEAKER 18 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 10 :
And really went that area. But anything else, doors, windows, you know, whatever, It’s still good and possibly some of the parts. I’m not a familiar person with all the parts on it, plus it had a little camp on it also.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. And, Pat, she’s more up in your area. Do you know anybody that would be a good place to go to try to offload some of that, anything that you can think of?
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, there is a business in Fort Collins called Scott’s Used Parts. They may purchase the truck as is and then sell parts off of that because I will tell you that that vintage of Tacoma’s is very, very popular. And so we have customers looking for them all the time. We’re not in the used parts business, but I’m wondering if I should even just swing by and take a look at it, maybe take a few pictures and show them around.
SPEAKER 10 :
Well, I can send you some pictures if you will give me a…
SPEAKER 07 :
phone that i can send you pictures of it yeah we can do that you know what let me do this uh and you can send them i can send them right on to pat so let me give you the text line number it’ll look it’ll accept pictures and i can send those on to pat thelma so our text line is 307 200 80 222 8222. Yeah, just send me those pictures, and I’ll forward those on to Pat. I’ll give him your phone number as well, and that way you guys can connect.
SPEAKER 10 :
That sounds good. 307-200-8222.
SPEAKER 07 :
Correct. You got it.
SPEAKER 10 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
All right. We’ll help you out, Thelma. Okay, thank you very much. No, we appreciate it. Mike in Westminster, do we have our review ready, Charlie, so we can play it now? Okay, so we’ve got our car review coming up next. Mike, hang tight. We’ll come back and take you right after that. This is Drive Radio, KLZ 560. We do car reviews each week, which this week, Richard, we’ve got a review again. What did you drive recently?
SPEAKER 08 :
So, Dad, I drove actually one of my more enjoyable cars of the past few months, and kind of some of you are going to think, well, that’s kind of a weird thing to say, but, you know, it is what it is. This is a 2025 Volkswagen, a Volkswagen Taos. This is the SE, Dad, which is kind of their middle, sort of kind of middle value pick, I guess you could say. This car, Dad, or I should say this SUV is As it sits with 31, 475, and you can get an S model for about 26, or you can get the SEL for about 36. So right there between kind of the mid-20s to mid-30s as far as that goes, Dad. This on it, I’ve got the window sticker here, so I’m going to give folks some of the features. This has the all-wheel drive, the 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder engine, the start-stop system, 18-inch wheels. rain sensing wipers, rear windowed washer and wiper, all that sort of stuff, illuminated mirrors, front row charging ports. It’s got cloud tech and cloth seating surfaces, which I’ll talk about in just a second. It’s got a lot of other obviously kind of safety features as far as the digital cockpit and push button starts and remote engine start and all sorts of things, Dad. All of these things for, like I said, $31,475. And it also has, Dad, which this might be a nice thing, 24-hour roadside assistance for three years and 36,000 miles, which I think is a really, really nice feature on that. All this to say that the reason it was one of my most enjoyable cars is because for the money, it is really hard to beat, and it was just a fun car to drive. You got in it. The controls were very functional. They were very intuitive. They worked really, really well. The soft tech that features or that… the cloth kind of like material I mentioned, it kind of was like a suede, kind of like a leather, Dad, but you felt like you could beat it up a little bit more. And you know kind of what I mean, right? When you have kids especially, it’s not something that I worried about getting super dirty or anything like that. I felt like I could spill something on it and wash it off, right? And it’s not something that did happen, but I felt like it could. And especially here in Colorado, Dad, right, we see a lot of Volkswagens around People take them off-road all the time, and it’s something I felt like you could do, and you didn’t have to worry about taking super, super great care of it. This is the updated Taos generation that was introduced in 2022. They’ve revised the styling a little bit. I already mentioned the engine. The all-wheel drive models do have a new transmission on it, Dad, and they’ve also updated it with a larger touchscreen, and so that kind of goes back to some of what I mentioned. Relatively quiet on the inside, Dad, right, for a car in the low 30s in terms of a price point. In this segment, Dad, and you can speak on this, kind of this, I guess it’s the small SUV, or Volkswagen kind of says it’s like the extra small SUV category. This is becoming a really popular category, and for this price point, I think the Taos fits really, really nicely.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, and again, for a lot of folks, that particular segment, as you know, Richard, is huge. And I mean, when I say huge, I mean huge. There are several, typically in a manufacturer, several different cars that fit in a particular lineup. And what I mean by that is, no, they’re not all the same size as the Taos and Volkswagen will even have smaller, larger. And so my point is that midsize, small to large, midsize SUV, end of things, Richard, is absolutely ginormous. It is a huge segment of the marketplace right now. It will continue to be a huge segment. And the reason for that is because the cars in that segment, the cars are so versatile that you find yourself not needing anything else other than that particular vehicle. That’s why they’re so hot right now and why everybody wants one.
SPEAKER 08 :
Absolutely. And especially, you know, I’ll go back to the kid side of stuff. I was able to get two car seats in here. Are you going to be able to fit two rear-facing car seats? Probably not. You’ve got to kind of move that front passenger seat up. But like you said, Dad, in terms of versatility, especially in an urban environment where you may be going into some tighter spaces, but you still want a little bit of room, this vehicle fits for that. Now, it’s not ginormous by any means, right? Right. you know, going to get a full sheet of plywood in the back, but I don’t think most people would expect that, right? They just want a car that’s reliable, works here in Colorado, that all-wheel drive is a great feature to have, right, for all of the weather that we do have. There’s a few other kind of, I guess, features on this car I really, really like as far as some of the visuals of it. It’s got a full LED bar that’s It makes this car really recognizable in kind of how they’ve done some stuff.
SPEAKER 07 :
I see that. It’s a really good look. I mean, their update, it’s a good-looking car. They’ve done a good job on it.
SPEAKER 08 :
And again, for folks who haven’t driven one, Dad, or maybe they’ve seen these from afar and you’re not sure what it is, I encourage you to check it out because, again, if you were in the market… for that extra small kind of SUV type of a vehicle. Like you said, Dad, the options are sort of endless. And I was actually talking to someone about this this past week. When it comes to a car, folks, we don’t tell you a lot of times, you know, yes, this car is for you. No, there’s lots of options. You have to be the judge, right? Do you like the styling? Do you like the fit? You may like what we have to say about a car. You may not like what we have to say. We’re just trying to give you a very, you know, overview perspective to see if it maybe piques some interest that you have, Dad. And I think that this, again, the 2025 Volkswagen Taos will do that for a lot of people. So encourage people. Go check this vehicle out, Dad. Last thing I’ll tell people real quick is fuel economy. It’s got an average of 25 and 33 for an average of 28, so almost 30 miles per gallon, Dad, in this car, which is really fantastic. Yeah. Again, check it out at your local Volkswagen dealer. Let them know that John and Richard Rush from Drive Radio and Rush to Reason sent you.

Do you know that your windshield is getting more expensive to replace? Most vehicles have options that help keep the vehicles from avoiding accidents or even keep it in the traffic lane. These windshields require more than just a replacement of the glass. They also require a calibration of the computer system to make sure everything is operational to the specifications the manufacturer set when the vehicle was built. You can’t trust the traveling glass replacement shop to do these necessary calibrations as they require special equipment and in most cases, an indoor shop to perform the calibrations. We have two Novus locations that can replace your windshield and also do These calibrations, Novus Fort Collins and Novus Sterling, both are fully equipped with the latest technology to service your vehicle properly. Find either location by going to any of our websites, ready-radio.com, drive-radio.com, or fixitradio.com. Just click on the Novus link. That’s Novus Auto Glass.

SPEAKER 10 :
And we are back, Drive Radio, KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 07 :
Mike in Westminster, you’re next.
SPEAKER 15 :
Hey, John, how’s it going? Good, Mike. Got a problem with my pickup. I don’t drive it all the time. And the wasps like to build nests in it. In the mirror, the mirror on it, door mirrors, and under the bed rail.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yep.
SPEAKER 15 :
Any ideas?
SPEAKER 07 :
Other than hanging some of the, you know, repellents, I guess. They’re really not propellants. They’re a catch device, I guess is what you could say. You know, the yellow tube looking things. That’s a good one. Outside of hanging some of those even like off the mirror where they’re not going into the mirror, but they would go to that instead. No, that’s the only thing I can think of, Mike.
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, and so that’s a good one. We do those in our shrubs in the backyard, and they work. The other thing that we do is we buy a six-pack of wasp spray cans, and they just grab one of those every time you go to the truck and be ready because, yeah, you don’t want to get stung, but, yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, believe me, I did that one time. I was cutting the grass first time of the year and went over the sprinkler box. Okay. Got about 10 feet, and I got stung all over the place.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yep. Oh, my. And as you know, Mike, and for some of you listening, if you’ve got other ideas, please call in and let us know. They come in waves. That’s how I’ve seen it, Mike. One year, you know, they’ll be really, really bad. The next year may be not so bad. The problem we’ve had the last couple of years is we haven’t had super, super bad winter. So they’re, you know, quote, unquote, not – Not dying off. I don’t know how else to say it, but they’re just not dying off in the winter like you would be normally. So in my opinion, they’re worse this year than they’ve been. And those yellow tube things, that’s the only thing I have found that actually attract work. And the thing on those, as you know, you’ve got to stay up on those. You can’t just hang them and then leave them forever. You’ve got to keep the stinky smell in it to where they’ll be attracted to it and so on. Otherwise, they don’t do any good either.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, I’ve got a couple of those on the house, but with the truck out there,
SPEAKER 07 :
I thought I’d ask to see what I could do. I’d hang one off each mirror if it were me. Okay. I mean, it was going to look goofy, but not going to hurt anything. Right. I’m going to just take them off when I move it. That’s right. Use a mechanics wire or something like that and just kind of wire them on and take them on and off, and off you go.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay. Now, do you know what, if I say, have you seen the rubberized red ties?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yes, yes, yes. Yes, absolutely. You could use those. Yeah, sure.
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, I went to a store looking for those, and I said rubberized bread ties, and the manager didn’t know what it was. Really? You know, it’s like, really?
SPEAKER 07 :
I can’t think of the actual name for those things, but they’re always in the, you know, they’re usually in, like, Home Depot. They’re at the end cabs on, you know, for all your tie straps and all that junk is. So they’re reusable.
SPEAKER 09 :
They’re not like zip ties.
SPEAKER 15 :
The official name is gear ties. There you go, gear ties. Gear ties, there you go. Perfect. But I always, never fails when I go on a bike trip. Yep.
SPEAKER 07 :
getting some along the way because I need it for some stupid reason. Those things are great. I keep them around. I keep a stock of them. They’re just great. I use them for all sorts of stuff. They’re great. Yep. All righty. Thank you, gentlemen. All right. Appreciate you, Mike, very much. Thanks. Great question, by the way. Mike in Highlands Ranch, you’re next.
SPEAKER 16 :
John, another great show today. Thank you, sir.
SPEAKER 07 :
Thank you.
SPEAKER 16 :
Now, kudos to Larry for getting behind the mic today as opposed to… Oh, yeah, earlier?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER 16 :
And way to go, Larry. I mean, take the rest of the day off, bro. I was really touched by the lady from Greeley that called about her Tacoma. And the reason I say that is because, in my opinion, the essence of this show, of your show, is to help people like that who have… for lack of a better term, little or no knowledge about what to do in those instances or mechanics, etc. She was obviously an older lady and bless you guys because of what you did there. That to me is is one of the top two or three reasons that your show exists.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, thank you, Mike. And she’s already texted us, and I sent those on to Pat already, and we’ve already got a plan in place to help her out. So that’s going to work out fine, I think, when it’s all said and done. Yeah, thank you for pointing that out.
SPEAKER 16 :
Like I said, that’s something that this show – I think it exists for. The other one, my dad’s maintenance, the question of the day or his thing was, take care of your car and it will take care of you.
SPEAKER 07 :
Very true.
SPEAKER 16 :
Oh, I love that one.
SPEAKER 07 :
Very true.
SPEAKER 16 :
And I have followed that edict Since Christ was a corporal.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. In fact, I probably, I know for me, Mike, and, you know, again, I love my dad dearly. He’s in memory care. We’ll go see him tomorrow and, you know, have as much fun as we can with that end of things. But I will say this, Mike, as much as I love my dad, I am more of a maintenance hound than he was. I think I learned it, but then I added to it is what I did.
SPEAKER 16 :
Well, my dad was also an avid high-performance car guy. Oh, my gosh. He would buy. I’d go, wow. As I look back on it, I wish that our family would have kept some of the stuff that he owned. Anyway, listen.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 16 :
Thank you guys very much for another delightful show.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, thank you, Mike. I appreciate you very much. Thanks for saying that. And somebody was saying, too, on the wasps and stuff, they’re agreeing with us. Those things just get dug in. As you guys know, they’ll find different places in the winter to get down in and, quote, unquote, hibernate. And, yeah, they are dirty little monsters. I don’t know how else to say it, but they are, and they can just be – absolute nuisances and all of you are saying essentially the same thing that you really just have to try to manage them as best you can and several of you you know chiming in on that thank you for doing so by the way i appreciate that because other than other than just the traps i really don’t know you know to eliminate them i because they like to go to water they like to go to mud but the problem is you know depending upon your property you’re not going to eliminate that stuff it’s it’s a part of what you’re doing in your property you’re not going to eliminate that Sorry.
SPEAKER 09 :
They might move from one bush to another, from one corner to the other, but they’re not going away.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, and again, if any of you have any better ideas on how to eliminate some of that end of things, not bees, but the wasps especially, the bees, I don’t worry too much about the bees. I’ll be straight up honest. Unless you’re bothering them, they don’t bother you. The wasps, they’re nasty little boogers. They will just get you for no other reason than to get you. They’ll come into attack mode. That’s right, exactly. All right, we’ll come right back. Lines are open, 303-477-5600. This is Drive Radio, KLZ 560.

SPEAKER 11 :
Hey, Jeff. Not that I’m an expert on wasps, but one of our local talk stations here once a month brings in a Montana State University Extension forestry guy named Dr. Peter Kolb, and he has a wealth of knowledge on a bunch of things. One of them is wasps. First of all, there’s three kinds of wasps that we deal with here. There’s hornets, there’s yellow jackets, and then there’s muddobbers, the European ones. And you need different baits for each kind. I did not realize that when you go to, like, I can’t remember the popular brand for traps. But when you go to them, they have yellow jacket traps, and then they have one called Y, W-H-Y, which is yellow jackets, hornets, and wasps. Well, wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets. So you need to know what kind of wasp you’ve got in order to be able to actually defend against it. Me, I hate the yellow jackets here. They’re just mean.
SPEAKER 07 :
They are.
SPEAKER 11 :
There’s just nothing redeeming about those little suckers. So I focus on those. But the other thing he said is that they die over winter. I know you were talking about does it get cold enough.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right.
SPEAKER 11 :
But typically all the drones die over winter.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 11 :
All you’re left with is the queens. So if you want to get rid of them, uh starting in april or or maybe even a little earlier in colorado yeah um start putting your traps out there because you will catch the queen ah and you will decrease the number i did not know that okay good good info strategy yeah thank you jeff i didn’t know that i didn’t either and i’ve done that for two years now and this year last year i had some pretty good numbers in my traps and this year i’ve down by maybe an order of magnitude by times 10. And, uh, I have not had a wasp problem around here at all. So, uh, um, I just have to say Dr. Kolb is right. So, uh, and then the final thing is that inside those mechanisms, I don’t know if you advise this or not, but there’s a type of, uh, insecticide called a, um, Oh, come on. Pyrethroid. Uh, And they’re based on the pyrethrum chemical that’s in marigolds.
SPEAKER 18 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 11 :
Not marigolds, chrysanthemums, sorry. But it’s a synthetic version, and one brand that I use is Tempo. And you can get it in any farm and ranch supply. You mix it with water. It’s like 16 millimeters to a gallon. and spray that in there, and it kills almost on contact. Not quite, but within a half an hour, anything that comes in contact with them dies. So that might be, you know, just around the edges of the mirror inside the housing.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right.
SPEAKER 11 :
Rain’s going to get in there anyway. Water, you know, it’s meant to.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right, good point.
SPEAKER 11 :
Liquids get in there. So just spraying a little bit of that in there periodically might do a lot to, and even under the engine compartment, any place you might build traps.
SPEAKER 07 :
Good to know. Yeah, good to know. And then somebody else texted in, too, to keep in mind, too, in some cases, depending upon, as you said, Jeff, the species of wasp, they actually can have their nests underground. They will actually bury themselves underground, and some of those nests can get huge and vast. That would be another thing where if you’ve got that situation, doing what you’re saying would work as well. Yes.
SPEAKER 11 :
Those are the yellow jackets. The yellow jackets are ground dwellers. The paper wasps are the ones that go under eaves and the little hives. And there’s a bunch of other things. But, yeah, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been bitten by or stung by yellow jackets just because I was in their area. And they said, oh, that’s a good idea. I’m going to hit this guy. I wasn’t doing anything to threaten him. I was walking by in one case and felt the stings. They’re just mean people. They’re like the fire ants of the wasp world. They have no redeeming value. That’s right. And I just can’t stand them, and I will get rid of them as much as possible. But just wanted people to know some of the options out there.
SPEAKER 07 :
Good to know.
SPEAKER 11 :
Some of the tricks of the trade.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, great. Yeah, thank you for all those tips. That’s what this show is for. Thank you, Jeff. You betcha. You bet. Have a good one. Appreciate that very much. Dennis in Lakewood, you’re next.
SPEAKER 14 :
Hello. Thanks for taking the call. Sure, Dennis. I have a 22 Tacoma, and it’s called an air dam in the front underneath the bumper, and that thing just makes it almost impossible to change the oil the way I do it, lying on the concrete under the truck. I had to take it off to lower that metal guard under the engine and then put it back on. I wonder, could I take it off and leave it off?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, you can. They put that there to help with aerodynamics and cafe ratings and things along those lines. Some will tell you that it’s there to help with the cooling of the engine and so on, although I would debate how much you actually get out of that. The majority of the cooling is going to come from air movement through the radiator itself and the fans pulling and so on. And will you notice any real difference? I highly doubt it, Dennis.
SPEAKER 09 :
Dennis, did you say it’s a 22? Yeah, 22.
SPEAKER 1 :
22.
SPEAKER 09 :
The question I would have is, are there any electrical connections, lights, or even parking sensors in that air dam?
SPEAKER 14 :
No. It’s just a piece of plastic. I had it off and looked it over pretty careful. I don’t think you have.
SPEAKER 09 :
I think, obviously, it’ll change the looks of the front of the truck a little bit, but if you’re happy with that, I’ve done it on my trucks. Take it off and leave it off.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah. Okay, very good.
SPEAKER 07 :
Thanks for the tip. I will highly doubt you have any negative effects from it and make your life a lot easier for what you’re talking about doing. And keep in mind, too, Dennis, that this is something that those that might argue with me keep this in mind. All plow trucks, when you go to put a snow plow on a truck, and a lot of three-quarter ton trucks will have air dams and things like that on them, Dennis, all of those things are coming off. You’re putting all your snow plow apparatus on. Yep. And the reality is it doesn’t change anything at the end of the day.
SPEAKER 09 :
Brackets and linkages, they all interfere with those air dams.
SPEAKER 07 :
That’s right. So all the air dams come off when you’re doing that as well. So not a huge issue.
SPEAKER 14 :
Okay. Well, thank you.
SPEAKER 07 :
You’re welcome, Dennis. Have fun with that. And, again, happy Father’s Day to everybody. To you as well. And, yeah, for a lot of you that are do-it-yourselfers and, you know, do things at home along those lines, in some cases, guys will take those air dams off just because it looks better with them off. Now, in some cases, it looks better on, depends upon the vehicle, but you’ll find in a lot of cases that, you know, guys will pull those off. And I can’t tell you how many of those over the years doing snow plow installations and so on that, you know, I have taken off from literally decades ago. I’d like to know how many are in the back of your shop, John. Or… yeah well typically um that’s again one of those things where it’s one of those things where you let’s save that when we sell the truck we’ll put it back on no you don’t no you don’t no you don’t you sell the truck and it’s next guy’s not going to worry about it anyway so no you know you don’t that’s right that’s that old thing where you know it’s sort of like we were talking earlier with some of the tools and stuff when i was telling pat during the break that i’m this is not an exaggeration between myself you know being a you know mechanic all those years And then my dad, of course, you know, collecting things. And, you know, I’ve got more toolboxes than I know what to do with. I’m going to have to get rid of some at some point here. I’m not exaggerating. I most likely have. And I’ll count later today just to come back and verify this. But I believe I’ve got six to eight air half inch drive impacts. Snap-on, Mack, Ingersoll, Rand, you know, you name it. The whole, you know, shoot and match. and yet i still turn to my electric you know uh cordless impact for the majority of things even if it’s rotating tires and things like that you just are not dragging that out with an air hose anymore no the the two reasons too i mean the air you’re still tethered to the airline and and you’ve got a range right right the the battery powered um they’ve gotten stronger and you go where you want yeah For example, taking the blades on and off of my mower. In that case, I just keep the socket on the impact knowing I’m doing that weakly. It sits right on top of my bench, and as I want to go out and do it, I’m not dragging anything out other than that. How do you get underneath it? Do you lift it? No, yeah. In my particular case, my mower deck flips up. Oh, excellent. My mower deck’s out front and it flips up. Excellent. And it makes it really easy. Makes it really easy. Do the blade end of things. Yeah, I’m very fortunate on that end of things because my particular mower, it’s very easy to change blades and sharpen blades and take them on and off and clean the deck and all of that. Is it a walker? Yeah, it’s a walker. Oh, that’s a great mower. You know the mower. Oh, my gosh. They’re made up in your area. Yeah, they’re awesome. Yeah. It works very well for what I use it for and the maintenance sides of things on that. There’s some things about the mower that maintenance-wise I don’t care for because some things are very tight and very packed in and so on, but in the case of the deck, and how it operates and cleaning it and getting to the blades and so on it is probably one of the not probably it’s one of the easiest ones on the market to i love that to utilize yeah it works because when you do mow and you get all the grass packed under you don’t want to leave that set that’ll cause corrosion it’ll mold i mean you want to get that cleaned out power wash that every time the deck that’s amazing car wash every time i do i i don’t this time of year when blades get sharp and you’re done with all of the debris and crap and things you’ve already picked up i sharpen every other week not every week some would say you should do every week but i do every other week and it’s fine yeah but yeah that makes it super easy with the electric impacts and all that so all right guys with that we’re going to go to top of the hour news break lines are open 303-477-5600 give us a call we’ll get you right on air and a text line 307-200-8222 we’ll be right back drive radio klz 560.
