Good morning. Very good. Okay. Glad you’re here. So for those of you listening, we’ll do some conversations today. I mean, I’ll answer questions, any car questions you’ve got, we can handle that as well. But really want to focus today on it’s that time of the year where a lot of you are, you know, you’re out doing car shows, you’re doing different things. You’re maybe looking at doing some things with, you know, the paint on the car or how to do a proper detail. We’ll even go through how to properly wash a car and do some things along those lines today as well. Explain to you. Lots of confusion, and it’s getting worse, not better, when it comes to the quality of window tint, PPF, which is paint protection film, clear bra is the short name for it, and ceramic coating. There’s a lot of dealers out there, unfortunately, that are telling you that, oh, you want that car ceramic coated? Give us an hour, we’ll ceramic coat it for you, deliver it, and they’re going to charge you X amount of money for that, and you cannot properly ceramic coat a car in an hour. It’s just not possible.

Right.

They’re doing some spray bottle nonsense, which is not giving you any kind of protection, really. It might for a little bit, maybe a few weeks, but it is not doing what true ceramic coating is doing. So while they’ll tell you that and they’ll have a big markup in that, trust me, that is not what you want to do. There’s also, and it’s still happening. Some of you text me this from time to time. The dealerships will tell you that the ceramic coating will be a hail protection coating. No such thing. Ceramic coating is not going to do anything at all when it comes to hail protection. It may do a little bit when it comes to some scratching and some things like that. And even that, it depends on how deep and how heavy that is. other item is that has gotten into your particular vehicle for example you may end up still with a door ding it doesn’t maybe scratch the paint as bad as it would have otherwise but you’re still going to have a ding when it’s all said and done that ceramic coating is not going to keep a door ding from happening no there’s no you’re not strengthening the metal of the car by putting ceramic coating on it that’s the best way to say it right exactly yeah it’s a paint product it is nothing to do with the metallurgy of the car itself yeah I wish it did. Trust me, as a guy that is very particular about their vehicles, I wish it did, but it does not. Anyways, Mike in Westminster, you’re first today. Go ahead.

Hey, thanks so much for taking my call. Thanks, Mike. I have a 2019 F-150 Twin Turbo EcoBoost.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 03 :
And, you know, love the way it runs. I did have the initial problem that was covered under warranty with the, what do you call, phasers.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay, cam phasers.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, the engine would knock when you first started it. And so I took it in, and they took care of it. My question now is, I have a, what I’m going to call a little delay in the transmission. Now, I was told by somebody, I don’t remember who, to make sure you have that tranny fluid replaced before 50,000 miles, and I did. I’ve got close to 53 on it now, so I’ve probably got about 5,000 miles on this oil. But what I’m finding is I’m getting this little delay in the morning when I shifted in and I tried to go into gear. It just kind of hesitates. I guess that’s the word. It hesitates until it warms up. It just doesn’t seem to… jump right between gears. And I know these transmissions, these 10 speeds, are not known for big reliability, I don’t think. But I’m just wondering, what can I, what have I done? Was it good to change the transmission?
SPEAKER 08 :
fluid yes it is and my gut feeling is and i guess this would be the question would be have you had i mean has anybody looked at this yet to see is there any uh any updates is there any software updates or anything along those lines that have not been done yet or do you know because typically that’s what’s going on with that end of things
SPEAKER 03 :
Oh, okay. I have taken it to Ford. Not for this. The last time I took it was to have the fluid changed. I wanted them to do it because I was still under warranty. Okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
And they should have looked at them. I don’t know why they didn’t. There are some technical service bulletins and some software updates for that specific transmission that should have been performed. And frankly, Mike, they should have done that at that same time. But if you didn’t say, you know, How should I say this? It should be automatic on the dealer side or even on the independent side, but it isn’t always. It just depends on, I’ll be honest, depends on the tech, how fast they’re doing things that day, what other extra time they’ve got and so on. They may or may not have checked that, but that’s the first thing I would look at.
SPEAKER 03 :
Okay. So I could actually just take it back.
SPEAKER 08 :
And that’s a warranty issue as well. So what you’re talking about on that, that TSB, they will do for free.
SPEAKER 03 :
Okay, so just tell them I want all TSPs.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, just say, listen, I’ve got a delayed engagement problem. That’s the technical term. So there’s a delayed engagement problem. I know you guys have some technical service bulletins along these lines. Can you check to see if everything is up to date software-wise in my vehicle?
SPEAKER 03 :
Okay, okay. And the other issue is, you know, underneath this car is a lot of plastic. I noticed that I think the transmission pan… It’s plastic, however, it’s some kind of, I don’t know.
SPEAKER 08 :
It’s composite is what we call it. It’s composite, yeah.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, and it has fins in it, which I would imagine are for cooling.
SPEAKER 08 :
That’s right.
SPEAKER 03 :
That is correct. Should I just bite the bullet and buy, just buy new pans, oil and or transmission pan and skid plate, by the way?
SPEAKER 08 :
If you wanted to upgrade the skid plate and do something heavier, that would be one thing to look at. As far as the transmission pan is concerned, unless you’ve done some huge performance upgrades to the transmission and you’re looking to do a heavier cast aluminum pan that even has more cooling and that in it, I wouldn’t mess with it, no, to be honest with you. If it’s not leaking and everything’s working, I wouldn’t worry about it.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, it’s not leaking. Nothing’s leaking. I just heard about people saying they warped.
SPEAKER 08 :
on them and uh you know well you’d and you it would if it if it had it leaked so you would know okay got no leaks so if it’s good it’s not leaking now as far as skid plates go this is true if any of you listening with trucks there’s always the ability to upgrade you know skid plates and things like that and the way i would look at that mike would be only reason really ever to upgrade a skid plate is if you’re somebody where you’re doing some you know not heavy off-roading but even you know you’re going you’re your favorite fishing hole and there’s a you know four-wheel drive road that you have to go on to get there and things along those lines honestly unless you’re doing that no reason to upgrade skid plates either okay well mine’s already broke once and that was just from ice on the road uh
SPEAKER 03 :
This is a family car, basically. There’s not a lot of four-wheel impact going on with this.
SPEAKER 08 :
If you’ve had that issue already, which that’s an anomaly. That typically doesn’t happen either. But if that’s the case, sure, you could upgrade to a heavier skid plate. Those are sold. Take one off, put a new one on sort of thing. You order it and put it on yourself sort of a thing. They’re not that hard to do.
SPEAKER 03 :
Absolutely. Okay, any other recommendations for this year with, you know, 53,000 miles?
SPEAKER 08 :
No, you know, you were on target to do transmission. Did they look at transfer case and differential at the same time by chance or no?
SPEAKER 03 :
Good question. I’d have to look at the paper.
SPEAKER 08 :
Those need to be looked at as well and probably serviced here within the next 10,000 miles or so. And then you’re going to want to do spark plugs in about 20.
SPEAKER 03 :
Ah, so about 70,000.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, I wouldn’t go any longer than that.
SPEAKER 03 :
Okay. All right. So these are not 100,000-mile plugs.
SPEAKER 08 :
They are not. Well, they are, and they’ll run that long. The problem is when you start trying to get them out of the engine, and it’s harder on the electrical components that are driving them, the resistance increases and so on. They’ll run that long, yes, but is it the right thing to do? No.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Now, I have noticed, if you have time, I don’t want to hold you up.
SPEAKER 08 :
No, you’re fine.
SPEAKER 03 :
Go ahead. Okay. So I would like to replace the plugs in this unit. and probably maybe next spring, you know, just to have it out of the way. Sure. Because I have noticed a tiny – occasionally I’ll be sitting at a light and I’ll hear a little miss, you know, like a little hesitation. And I’ll be honest with you, when gas was super expensive, I didn’t always keep premium in it. So now it’s – I just filled up. Premium, you know, was $2.94 a gallon. Right. Way cheaper. Yeah, I’m willing to fill it up with premium. Sure. with that but when it was you know four dollars that’s a little that’s a little stiffer absolutely i know i hear you absolutely mike yeah yeah especially when i got the big tank the 30 you know that’s right gallons was like oh man that’s painful absolutely especially for retired guys so okay well that’s pretty much oh i do have one question and just an opinion you don’t have to whatever um I use Best Line products. Do you care for them, not care for them, what?
SPEAKER 08 :
I don’t know the brand, to be honest with you. Is it the brand name Best Line? Best Line, yes. I don’t know that brand, actually. I hate to say that, but I know most brands, but that one I do not know. What do they make, I guess is the question.
SPEAKER 03 :
Uh, it’s a oil transmission and gas supplement. Not all, they’re not, you know, not out of one bottle, of course. Got it. It comes in a base of, uh, 10 weight, so it’s pretty much compatible with anything you use. And, uh… I put it in my old Lexus, and boy, it quieted it right down. It’s just a really nice product, nano lube product.
SPEAKER 08 :
Again, given my history and experience with BG, I pretty much have stuck with their products throughout all of the years just because it’s proven, and I’ve used it literally since I was a kid, and I’m not exaggerating when I say that. So I’ve been using their product for 50-plus years. But that doesn’t mean there’s not other good products on the market, but this one I am not familiar with.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, let’s talk pickleball then. That I’ve never played, Mike, ever.

Oh, you’re missing out, buddy. I have never played it.

I’ve watched people do it. I’ve seen the videos and had people talk to me about it and so on, but honestly, I’ve never played.

Well, you know, there’s one answer to fix a problem. You just go get rid of the truck and go buy something else. So, yeah, that’s always an option if that’s something that you can do. Feel free. Again, question of the day is what’s your wife’s or your spouse’s, I should say, because a lot of ladies listen to this show as well. But what is your spouse’s, your other half’s favorite car? 303-477-5600. Let’s talk, though, for we kind of opened up the show talking about ceramic coating and just a lot of the misconceptions that are out there and i’ve had people that have texted me this where you know they’re looking at a new car had somebody a few weeks ago that texted me and said hey i’m looking at a new truck and and uh you know the dealership’s telling me that if i want a ceramic coated you know i can just wait a little bit wait an hour or so they’ll ceramic coat it for me they want x amount of money out of it blah blah blah you know what are your thoughts i’m like run i’m like yeah no in fact i’m i’m sorry but i’m gonna say this anyways I wouldn’t buy a truck there. That’s just me. I wouldn’t buy the truck there because they’re not being honest with you on what ceramic coating even is. Now, maybe they’re ignorant. Highly doubt it because there’s enough material and enough information out there to really know what ceramic coating, true ceramic coating is versus what it isn’t. And so my feeling is if you’ve got somebody at a dealership that’s trying to upsell you on a ceramic coating at the time of your purchase, and they’re going to go do that for you in the next hour and charge you whatever the money is, $800,000, $1,200, whatever the magic number is. I think in this case it was like $750 is what this particular texter was telling me. This was somebody up in Wyoming, by the way. It wasn’t down here in the metro area. This was up in Wyoming. And my answer is I wouldn’t buy the truck there. I’d go buy the truck someplace else because they’re not being honest with you.
SPEAKER 14 :
Boy, if they’re saying about $700 around there in a dealership, you know, in a brand new car, I will think twice about it.
SPEAKER 08 :
You know what I mean? Yeah, because there’s no – well, Roy, you can explain.
SPEAKER 14 :
Just the application of the ceramic coating probably is just $700, just the application. But – to make sure the ceramic coating bonds to the paint, to the clear coat, you gotta do a nice paint correction.
SPEAKER 08 :
You gotta prep it.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, you gotta prep it. Right. And that’s the… Main thing. On everything that you do, prepping is the… Thank you.
SPEAKER 08 :
It doesn’t matter whether we’re talking, you know, you’re drywalling inside the house and you’re doing everything underneath to make sure that it’s nice and flat. So as you go put your tape and texture on, you know, you put your texture, I should say, and your paint on top. If the drywall itself underneath isn’t nice, it’s no different. It’s the same situation here. So that prepping is a big deal. And I just know because I’ve seen what it takes to do this for all of you listening. There is no way. You can get a car. I don’t care unless you had 10 guys working on an individual section of the car. But let me add a caveat to that. You could prep it maybe if you had X amount of people working on the car. You could get it prepped. But this is the other thing I know, and this is something, you know, Roy, you can talk to. The dry time alone on the correct ceramic coating, you can’t do in an hour. Am I right? No, you can’t. No. It won’t dry in an hour is my point, right?
SPEAKER 14 :
No, no, no, no, no, no, no. First of all, it takes more than an hour to apply it. I mean, it’s a few hours. Right. Yeah. And then you have the curing process.
SPEAKER 08 :
Which takes how long typically?
SPEAKER 14 :
Well, the coating that we use, the curing process is about four to six weeks.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay. Total curing.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah. But in our case, I mean, at the shop where we apply it, we have to leave the car inside for 24 hours.
SPEAKER 08 :
24 hours. Okay. So you really can’t do anything with that car for at least a day? No. yeah okay three days I know I get it yeah but at least a minimum of 24 hours on the dry time on that coating just on its own right then and that by the way I also know that if you want double layer you want to do some things differently even in different parts of the car which for all of you listening yes there is that option you can layer this and even do that differently as well which again I guarantee you that dealership is not doing. That’s something you guys do, right?
SPEAKER 14 :
That has to do with the coating that they’re using, the brand. So the coating that we use is multi-layer. So we can put 10 layers, 15 layers, whatever you want. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER 08 :
It’s all about how much you want to spend.
SPEAKER 14 :
Exactly. It’s all about the money. Yeah. But yeah, you can do whatever you want, but it depends on the brand that you’re using. Some ceramic coatings, they claim just one layer and that’s it. That’s how it is. You know what I mean? So it’s more about the brand. So you’re buying a new car and they offer to you a ceramic coating. So I recommend to do a little research about it. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER 08 :
Ask for the brand. Good idea. Those of you that maybe find yourself in that particular situation and maybe you’re buying a car where they’re telling you that it’s already been done. Okay, what brand? Who did it? What’s the warranty going to be on it? So on and so forth. Those are all questions you need to ask before you actually fork over the money for ceramic coating that I’ll be straight up honest may have come out of a spray bottle. And for those of you listening, And there’s a lot of spray bottle product on the market. And I’m not going to tell you that it’s all bad, but it’s not apples to apples. So let me just say it that way. You know, are some of the ceramic slash wax coatings better than just old straight car wax coatings? Probably, yes, depending upon the ingredients and so on. That’s one of those things also you need to be very careful of. But in general, are they going to be better? Yes. Are they a true ceramic coating like what you guys at ProTech are putting on? The answer is no, they are not. No, they’re not. It’s not the same. It’s not apples to apples. No, it’s not the same. and and for those of you that want to know more about that what i would tell you to do is you know call uh roy and it’s a at protec find out exactly you can come by the shop even they’ve typically got vehicles there that they’re either working on or they have done you guys have got videos as well of cars that you have done some of those cars being you know mine that we’ve done you know together and things like that so there’s There’s ways to look at your specific vehicle and what do you want done, what are you trying to protect for, I guess you could also say at the end of the day. So, for example, are you trying to make it shinier so that as you go car shows and things like that, you just want a better product when it’s all said and done? Are you using this as your daily driver and you’re trying to protect from all of the road grime and grit and stuff that happens all year long, including the wintertime? In other words, what are you doing with the vehicle? Some of you guys that have pickup trucks that are in the construction, and keep in mind that for some of you where you’re always worried about scratching the side of the bed or the tailgate where you’re getting in and out of the truck a lot, you can PPF those areas. Most people don’t realize that, but you can PPF those areas.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, and maybe the ceramic coating is not going to work for that.
SPEAKER 08 :
Correct.
SPEAKER 14 :
So you better go for the PPF.
SPEAKER 08 :
You may very well be better off doing it that way. For a lot of you guys that are working out of the truck, I would say that you would be best off to at least… ppf the the top third of the bed and for sure the tailgate if it were me working out of that truck on a daily basis that’s something i would look at and for some of you you may want to go ahead and ppf the whole side bed depending upon what you’re leaning against and how that’s working and so on if you really want the truck to look nice and have good durable paint and have it last a long time and by the way get better value out of it when you go to trade the truck off I would probably PPF the entire sides and the tailgate. And for a lot of you listening, that’s something that you probably have never heard because unless you’re into kind of the exotic world, most people don’t know you can PPF an entire car.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
Because most guys driving daily drivers don’t PPF the entire car. But there’s a lot of folks out there that have exotics, you know, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, things like that, where the entire car has been PPF to protect the paint across the entire spectrum of the car, right?
SPEAKER 14 :
Exactly. And that’s what we recommend. I mean, the most that we recommend is just to do the full front. I mean, we’re talking about full hood, full fenders. Right. Front bumper.
SPEAKER 08 :
The whole nose of the car.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, the whole nose. Yeah. Windshield pillars. Right. Mirrors. The front of the roof. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, top layer. 12, 18 inches. Mirrors, all that, right?
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, where the rock chips get.
SPEAKER 08 :

Hey, John. Thanks for taking my call. Sure, Bob. Hey, buddy. I’ve talked to you several times, and I have one that’s just driving me crazy. I have an 09 Chevy 2500 4×4 with a 6 liter. And I had called you before on this one. It started, this is several months ago, heard a chirping noise in the motor and took it to a shop. It’s not one of your members’ shops. It was another shop. And the guy says, oh, it’s a bad rod bearing. I have a friend that’s a mechanic. He builds race motors, and he’s a machinist. I call him, and he come over, and he said, start it up. He listened to it for about three seconds and told me to turn it off. He says, no, it’s not a bad rod bearing. He says, it’s lifters. He says, a lot of those motors just have bad lifters. So, long story short… pulled the heads off, replaced all the lifters with Tooley Johnson lifters. He had to mill the heads. The one head had a slight hump in it, but he milled four thousandths off each head. Put the heads back together, used studs instead of the bolts, new bolts on the exhaust manifold, because he says that they have a stretch, and put it back together, started up, took it on I-70 up to Genesee, and It just ran like a top, and he was checking the side mirror at the time to see if there was any smoke, any blow-by or anything, and there was nothing. Come back home, parked it in front of the house, let it idle for a little bit, just heard like a kitten, shut it off, walked down my driveway to open up. I call it a shop, but it’s kind of my wood shop. I’m actually more so than a mechanic. I went back out and started it up, and my gosh, John, you’d have thought the whole neighborhood caught on fire. It just started just burning oil like crazy. So I immediately backed it down the driveway, shut it off right away. Excuse me. We ended up pulling the intake back off of it, and it was full of oil. And when we tipped the intake up vertically, probably… I wouldn’t say a quart, but over half a quart of oil poured out of the intake, and all the plugs were fouled. Any idea?
SPEAKER 08 :
All of them were fouled, not just one?
SPEAKER 04 :
Every single plug was fouled but one.
SPEAKER 08 :
I would probably lean towards, did we break a ring in that process of driving up the hill even and back and so on, and not that that’s what caused it, but Did it just happen to be coincidental? Did we break a ring at the same time? That would be the first thing that I would look at. It’s doubtful that you’ve got a valve seal or anything along those lines because typically, A, they won’t burn as much oil as what you’re talking about and would be more centralized to a specific cylinder, not so much across the board. When you break a ring, of course, it’s going to give you all sorts of blow-by and it’s going to blow oil all the way through, back up through the intake and everywhere. So you’ll see it pretty much everywhere except for maybe the cylinder that it’s happening in.
SPEAKER 04 :
Gotcha. So his thought, and he’s about going nuts trying to figure this out, he’s wondering if because these manifolds are ABS, and being as the heads were milled four thousandths, it’s changed the angle.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, I mean, typically that four thousandths isn’t that much, and… And that intake, you know, the gaskets on it, well, of course, that one uses RTV anyway. So given the fact that that’s what you’re using to seal it back up, I would be hard-pressed to believe that’s an issue.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
In other words, I don’t think you’re going to have to machine the intake to match the hedge. You haven’t changed them that much.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. Well, actually, like I said, he’s a mechanic. He happened to have a brand-new intake. Okay. So his thought is that once we shut it off… and it cooled down, that that ABS changed. And that could be.
SPEAKER 08 :
Now, keep in mind, Bob, that could just be from age of the intake, the fact you had it off and so on. It could be that you put a new intake on it, and it fixes it. Now, given the fact that you’re where you’re at right now with already doing the heads and everything else and not really knowing what’s on the bottom end, and he’s got an intake kicking around, as easy as that one is to change, I think I would do that before I did anything else.
SPEAKER 04 :
Gotcha. Okay, buddy, I just appreciate you.
SPEAKER 08 :
You’re not out anything, really. I mean, since he’s got it, you’re not really out anything trying that and see what happens.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right.
SPEAKER 08 :
But my gut feeling is it broke a ring, but I could be wrong in that.
SPEAKER 04 :

How you doing, buddy? Good, Jeff. I’m good, good. So, yeah, I was calling. You know what’s interesting on my end of the deal with the ceramic coating industry, I guess, is or something, I am highly, what do I say, marketed to. You know what I mean? I’ve got a detail on business here. It’s about four years now, Rocky Mountain Auto Detail, blah, blah, blah, whatever website. But I get a lot of text now from these ceramic companies or whatever I don’t ever know that, because there’s never like a brand or anything, but there’s, you know, like, hey, man, you know, how you doing? You want to make an extra, you know, 10 Lamborghinis? You know, blah, blah, blah. They’re just these radical, okay, so you do know. All right, what is that?
SPEAKER 08 :
Those are typically, and I get that, by the way, not just in that business, but the other business I own, we get those sorts of things on a routine basis. Those are typically, and they’re not all scams, by the way. Some of those are somewhat legit, although I say somewhat legit because those are typically what I call third-party fraud. brokers providers whatever you want to say so they’re typically looking for somebody you know same thing by the way is happening in the construction world right now even in the roofing world where you’ll find somebody that’s out there advertising you know let us replace your roof we’ll save you blah blah blah blah blah that is not a roofing company in most cases they are farming out and finding roofing companies that will do the job So they can pull their 20, 30 percent off of the top. You don’t get as good of a roof as you would get going to a regular roofing contractor. The broker still makes their money when it’s all said and done. They’re a fly by night and they’re gone. The same thing is happening with what you’re talking about, Jeff. These are typically third party providers that have customers that need something done and they’re looking for a provider. Okay, that’s kind of what I was… And I’m not saying that they’re not legit as far as that end of it goes, but it’s really dicey on, okay, how do I get paid? Who’s the actual customer? How am I going to handle warranties on down the road? On and on we go. It ends up being a hodgepodge that I would not go down that path of.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yeah, I don’t respond to really any. I mean, I don’t. I just don’t respond to it.
SPEAKER 08 :
I get a ton of those in the other business because of the things we do there where people want X, Y, Z done. And the thing I’ve always tried to figure out is how do these guys get started in the first place? That’s the thing I’ve never been able to figure out.
SPEAKER 11 :
So I actually read a story on Reddit about one of the detailers that actually responded to them. Okay. And I guess he had already paid like $1,300 to them, and he hadn’t seen a single customer.
SPEAKER 08 :
So he was paying on the front side to get customers. Yeah, he was paying on the front side. Oh, that’s really a bad deal. Yeah, you never want to do that. Yeah, that’s a bad deal.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, so he was warning all the detailers.
SPEAKER 08 :
That’s a scam at that point. Absolutely. Yeah, that definitely makes me feel better about it. Yeah, do not, yeah. Jeff, on any of those, and by the way, all of you listening, one of the things I’ve had, you know, as I consult other businesses and stuff, Jeff, other industries, these same things can happen, and I am the first to tell my clients, run. Do not respond to any of those things at all. Typically, they are too good to be true. Let’s just say it that way.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right.
SPEAKER 11 :
I get about two, three emails a week and about four or five text messages.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yep. They are. What’s that old saying, Jeff? If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Yeah.
SPEAKER 16 :
Majority of what we’re doing is the interiors. It seems like, man, the interiors is what need the help on all these cars. And it’s like, I’ve been battling with the, you know what I mean? What you need is the higher, I’ll tell you what, to get a car, a good interior car clean, what it takes is air pressure. Like you need more, you’ve never had a big enough air compressor, you know what I mean, to clean a car right. I mean, to get in there to blast, because you can with those, that little oscillating tips and stuff like that, you can just blast the stuff out of there, you know, dog hair and everything like that.
SPEAKER 08 :
A few places, as we’re talking on Fix-It Radio, one of the few places you actually still use compressed air, that collision centers and so on. Mechanical shops, it’s going the other direction. They’re using less and less air as time goes by.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yep. Yeah, that’s the one thing I was like, when you’re talking about those tools, I was like, boy, that air, what I do to clean the cars, I was like, man, that’s one thing that you won’t replace unless you get an electric… It’s already an electric. Yeah, what am I saying?
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, yeah, I mean, we always say never say never because as time goes by and different technologies come along, they may end up doing that different ways. But, no, there are still things, even my own shop at home, where air is still the only way to go. It’s all I’ve got, yeah. Sandblasting, for example, Jeff, there’s no other thing I can use to bead blast and take care of something like you can with compressed air. Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
SPEAKER 16 :
Well, you know, I’ll give you a little, yesterday my dad and I watched, I pulled up, do you know the, I always pronounce the guy’s name, but it’s the camp, Ed Eskiderian.
SPEAKER 08 :
Eskiderian, yep, Esky Camps.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yes. Do you see familiar the guy? You know, he just turned 104.
SPEAKER 08 :
I saw that. I saw a post yesterday on social media. I think it was either yesterday or Thursday where I saw that. I think it was yesterday, Jeff, where I saw that. It’s amazing, actually.
SPEAKER 16 :
And he still goes to work every day.
SPEAKER 08 :
Still working in the plant. Go figure.
SPEAKER 16 :
He still works. There’s an interview. I just sat and watched with my old man. My dad’s 84 years old, right? He is a part of racing history around here. And he owned those cams, and his roundy round and his drag car.
SPEAKER 08 :
A lot of guys own those, Jeff, and still do, as you know.
SPEAKER 16 :
They did, yeah. And I didn’t know, really, the story of the guy.
SPEAKER 08 :
And I must have seen that Thursday, because his birthday is the 10th, so I must have been watching that on Thursday.
SPEAKER 16 :
Have you seen the vid that now, I went on the dive, you know what I mean, YouTube, and there’s a great… interview with him that’s about 30 minutes that no i have not seen that i’ll have to go look that up i will now that you’ve mentioned that i will for sure do you want it it’s like how many it’s almost like watching a man describe well basically you’re going to listen to a man describe the birth of of uh very so many things of automotive you know nascar those are those are cool those are cool it’s amazing to listen to him talk about it because he sits there and talks about hopping up a model t yep And he has such knowledge of the Model T and how they made them go faster and how fast they went. It’s just, John, you’ll, yeah, I guess it gives me shivers. I mean, you’ve got to listen to this article or the interview with him. It’s incredible.

Okay, so I have something. Since you’re on that track, Jeff, and today will be a little less call-wise just because of how nice it is outside. So here’s a question for you, and I’ll ask Roy and Dietze. Do you know where the term hot rod came from, Jeff?
SPEAKER 16 :
think I have heard it I’m trying to think there’s one that I just learned the drag I just learned where drag came from he taught me this one but I don’t uh the drag race not drag drag race you know how that became a thing uh but hot rod hot rod uh No, you’d have to tell me that one.
SPEAKER 08 :
And I read this one this morning because I didn’t know this either. So the term hot rod came from kicking out the bore or the valve size on a flathead engine is limited because with the flathead, you can’t go that far because it’s a flathead engine. So, a good way to extract more power was to grind the rod journals off-center further away from the center point of the main, so you make the rod journal smaller. This increased the throw. You can do that with small block Chevy, by the way. Giving you a longer stroke, so it made more power at a lower RPM while simultaneously increasing the compression, so you could get more horsepower by using, you know, pump gas. Yeah. The smaller rod journals were slipperier and sapped less horsepower, though it was probably minimal. It made the rods hotter, so it became known as hot-rodding a flathead V8.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay, so I watched a video not that long ago, I think it was like two weeks ago, where they explained all that, and it was like, because it would use to release energy, because you know the energy had to go somewhere. That’s right, that’s right. But I didn’t know that’s why it was called that.
SPEAKER 08 :
So that’s where the term hot rod comes from. That makes sense. Which I did not know until today, Jeff. Nice.
SPEAKER 16 :
How about, well, okay, the word, you know, to go drag racing. Okay, we’re going to go drag racing. Let’s go drag. Where did that, how did that?
SPEAKER 08 :
That I don’t know. That one I don’t know either.
SPEAKER 16 :
I’ll ruin your, you’ve got to watch the video with this Ed Escudero. This is one I’ll just ruin. I’ll ruin it. Spoiler alert, but. So he said what it is is the old boys, what they did before, they had horses, and they were plowing with their horses out there. And so sometimes they would, you know, my horse can do 20 acres in 30 minutes, Chuck. You know, whatever. Oh, yeah, well, you know, Bessie did it half that time last time, whatever. They would start to.
SPEAKER 08 :
compare their horses i did not know that they would drag yeah they were drag racing makes sense i had no idea jeff no idea now you know no very cool no those to me and maybe it’s just because i’m getting older and i find those things fascinating but that that interview with uh with this good area and I will definitely watch because to me it’s just cool to listen to some of those stories and how things were really quote-unquote birthed. And really quick, on a serious note, and I mean all of this is serious, but on a real serious note, I don’t think the average person, the average driver maybe is the best way for me to say this, Jeff, really understands how the racing end of things guys like you know grumpy jenkins and escudarian and a lot of others i don’t think any of them really understand how much positive effect they had on the whole motoring world by by what they were doing with hot rodding and and you know increasing horsepower and drag coefficient and and and i mean all the things those guys did through all of those years got us to where we are today it what in as much as i credit the engineers at the factories and so on and they’re great but it’s really those racing teams and the racers and engineers you know in that world that have really made the car what it is today in my opinion
SPEAKER 16 :
He was going on about the, they go into the, it’s the lake beds. It’s all about Los Angeles because he’s from L.A.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yep.
SPEAKER 16 :
And that’s what’s amazing. It’s that whole L.A., downtown L.A. was so about the car then.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yep.
SPEAKER 16 :
And it was the racing ruled that city.
SPEAKER 05 :
That’s right.
SPEAKER 16 :
And it’s amazing how it’s almost changed now.
SPEAKER 01 :
And it’s spread coast to coast. Yep, that’s right.
SPEAKER 16 :
It’s crazy how it changed in that town. But that’s, yeah, and they would go out 100 miles east, he was saying, out, and they had big, long lake beds. And they just would go out there and just let it just wide open, wide open. And then there was like, they put, he said, you know, like the gas stations, they have the ding-ding when you come to the gas station or whatever. They would lay those out there. but they would split them up, you know, like a half a mile apart or whatever, and then it would be like rolling start drag races.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 16 :
And they would be running those Model Ts, you know what I mean, at 140 mile an hour. That’s fast for a Model T. That’s what they did, 140. Holy shnikes.
SPEAKER 08 :

We’ll get into window tint and paint protection film and all of that as well today. One thing, though, I wanted to mention while we still have some time right now is with it being really hot out right now. Now, it’s not always hot. Mornings are a little cool. Last night was really nice, by the way. It was a really nice evening and nice, cool morning this morning. And something to remember, if you’re maybe new to the automotive world or you’re new to even having a newer car and you’re taking care of it yourself when you’re washing and so on, keep in mind that you do not want to wash a car. In the middle of a day, in hot, direct sunlight, you could end up doing as much damage to the car with the soap drying on the surface as you would if you didn’t wash it at all. And I mean that as seriously as I can. You want to try your very best to avoid washing a car in direct sunlight when it’s 95 degrees outside. You’re not doing yourselves any good in doing that. Now, if you can find some shade, get out of the direct sunlight, something along those lines, sure, that’s not a problem. But you do not want to be washing that car in direct sunlight with soap because you can end up having just as much issues afterwards because the water spots and such that can come from that will be just as bad as if you left it alone. Am I right in that?
SPEAKER 14 :
No, you’re right. Absolutely right. I mean, you don’t want to deal with water spots.
SPEAKER 08 :
They’re hard to get out.
SPEAKER 14 :
They’re really hard. Now you’re going to have to do some polishing.
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, and for some of you, depending upon your water quality, which is not equal from city to city to city, and some of you have wells and so on, you really have to be careful because those water spots, to Roy’s point, they can be just as hard to get out as anything else.
SPEAKER 14 :
Unless you’re using filter water, like deionized water. Right. Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
Which a lot of car washes use, by the way. Not all, but a lot do.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah. But, I mean, if you don’t have that, I don’t recommend you to do that.
SPEAKER 08 :
No, your best thing this time of the year when it comes to washing a car is wait until late evening when the sun’s partially down and you don’t have that direct sunlight or early morning where even if you have a little bit of direct sunlight, it’s still really nice outside. It’s nice and cool. You don’t have those midday rays that are beating down. The biggest thing you want to do is make sure that things aren’t drying. before you can get it totally rinsed and then you start drying off the car you don’t want an air drying because that’s where the water spots come from yeah right and by the way for a lot of you listening this can happen depending upon the water hardness and so on it can affect more than just paint it can affect chrome on the car it can affect the glass on the car it can affect a lot of things it’s not just the paint that we’re talking about here where you can have negative effects right yeah
SPEAKER 14 :
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 08 :
It’ll etch the glass even. And I will tell you this. Water spots etched in on the glass, let’s just say that it’s easier to get the water spots out of the paint than it is to get them out of the glass. Am I right, Roy?
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, no, you’re right.
SPEAKER 08 :
Absolutely right. It does something to the glass to where you just can’t hardly get those water spots back out. I don’t want to say it’s impossible, but it is darn near.
SPEAKER 14 :
And it depends on the glass. The glass has a lot of pores, too.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay, so we’ve got a minute left here. Ceramic coating. Can you do the glass? Does it help the glass if you ceramic coat that?
SPEAKER 14 :
How does that work? You can do glass. You can do everything on the vehicle. Plastic, glass, all the paint, obviously. Headlights, headlights, all that. The brand that we use, we have a special coating for every specific area.

So if you’ve got headlights and taillights and things along those lines, you can use it for all of that as well. What about interior?

Same thing. We have a ceramic coating just for the interior for leather, plastic, and all that.

Oh, okay. Keep the dust and all that. So when you go to wash them, all the dust and everything comes off way easier when you do that. Yes. Ah, okay. Makes total sense.
