Miami Dolphins’ offensive lineman Bayron Matos airlifted to hospital after injury during training camp

MIAMI DOLPHINS VS JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS PRE SEASON WEEK 3 AUGUST 26^ 2023 EVERBANK STADIUM JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA

Per NFL.com, Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Bayron Matos suffered an undisclosed injury at the end of Wednesday’s training camp practice in Miami Gardens, Fla., and was airlifted to a medical center via helicopter.

The injury happened in the final minutes of Day 1 of the Dolphins’ training camp, with sources saying that Matos, 24, was involved in a collision with a teammate and suffered loss of feeling in his right side. Hal Habib of the Palm Beach Post reported that it wasn’t entirely clear exactly how Matos was injured, but said that the offensive tackle was “immobilized and strapped to a board before being carted off the practice field by first responders.” Several of Matos’ teammates grouped around him while medical personnel tended to him.

A CT scan and MRI were later conducted, with Matos, a second-year offensive tackle, listed in stable condition, per the Dolphins. No specific timetable for return was provided.

Matos, born in Los Mina, Santo Domingo, was a two-sport athlete in basketball and baseball in his youth and only started playing football in 2022. Hewent undrafted in 2024 but signed with the Dolphins as a free agent through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program — an initiative that gives athletes from countries outside the U.S. a chance to play in the NFL. He spent time on Miami’s practice squad over the past year before signing a reserve/future contract in January. He has not yet played in an NFL game.
