HR1 Andy’s 5-Star Movie Reviews: Light of the World, Long Walk, and The Baltimorons 9-12-25 by John Rush
SPEAKER 07 :
It’s finally Friday on Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush. So I tell him I’m a pro jack. And who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama himself. So we finish 18, and he’s going to sniff me. And I say, hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know? And he says, oh, it won’t be any money. And when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness. So I got that going. And movie reviews with Andy Payne.
SPEAKER 20 :
I think that you got the wrong impression about me. I think in all fairness, I should explain to you exactly what it is that I do.
SPEAKER 05 :
What I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.
SPEAKER 15 :
What do you want to do tonight?
SPEAKER 07 :
The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world. Stick a fork in me, Jerry. I’m done. Now, here is your host of Rush to Reason, John Rush.
SPEAKER 08 :
And it’s Friday. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Myself, Andy Pate, Charlie Grimes, and it has been one heck of a week, so I’m glad it’s Friday, Andy. Yes, I agree. Finally here. What a week. What an awful week. Yeah, it has not been a good week.
SPEAKER 04 :
No.
SPEAKER 08 :
Not by any stretch of the imagination.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, they got him.
SPEAKER 08 :
It looks like it.
SPEAKER 04 :
It looks like they got it. So, I mean, that’s good news. And, you know, I haven’t been here to comment on this.
SPEAKER 08 :
Can I just kind of… Yeah, and for all of you listening, some of you asked, you know, what are we going to talk about today? We’re still going to do movies and all that like we normally do. I talked about that even yesterday. We don’t have a ton of time today to cover a lot of things in regards to that, but we’ll have Tuesday. And there’ll be a lot more information by the time Tuesday rolls around that we can discuss where it won’t be a lot of hearsay stuff. We’ll have a lot of factual things we can talk about on Tuesday.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, I was thinking about that myself because it was like, oh, maybe we should shelve all the movie stuff. I talked to my wife. She says, no, Andy, they’re going to need to get away from this. I said that yesterday. It’s been all Charlie Kirk. Yep. Okay, let me just, because I haven’t been here, let me get my feelings on it, okay? Whole generations are being conditioned to believe disagreement equals violence. Right. And this has turned them into people who feel that I’ve got to respond to violence with violence. And, you know, it doesn’t matter if the left says don’t kill. Okay, that doesn’t matter. Because here’s what they basically say. They go, they tell young people, don’t kill. Now, don’t be violent. But just so you know, those guys over there, they’re Nazis. Nazis kill millions. Gosh, if they were gone, it could save millions of lives. But don’t kill. Right. They’re fascists, fascists, oppress and kill their racist, racist own slaves. But don’t kill. OK, but just, you know, boy, oh, boy, if they were gone. Things would be better. Here’s the big problem, John. It’s not that they’re saying these things about us. It’s that these things aren’t true. I mean, really, if I really were a Nazi, fascist, racist who hates gay people, should anyone be forbidden from saying it? No, no, they should be allowed to say it. Absolutely. The problem is none of it’s true. And this is why the left has to say these messages over and over and over and over and over. Why? Because there’s no evidence of it. So they are speaking it into existence. They are programming young people. And when you program a bunch of young people like that. You’re going to have some who are going to do what we just saw. In fact, not just young people. Look, they’ve aged. It is now people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s. People of a lot of ages now will act out and do these things. They feel if I shoot Donald Trump, I am saving millions of lives. If I shoot Charlie Kirk, I am saving. They honestly believe that they are doing a service for humanity. And I think that’s the sad thing.
SPEAKER 08 :
What do you think? Yes, you’re 100% correct. And part of the news today that just came out, and again, folks, please, be careful with a lot of things you read. There’ll be a lot of other things that are disseminated over the weekend, even into Monday. There’s some reports out now that he was actually a registered Republican, but a really wild, white, nationalist-type Republican and all of that. And, again, folks, I don’t know. There’s a huge, long tweet that’s out right now, an ex-post, I should say, rolling through and describing a lot of the things that he actually was involved in and believed in and so on. And, again, what I would say is be very careful with reading a lot of those things right now because the reality is we don’t know. And there will be so much misinformation out there. not only today, but already has been out, but through the weekend even, as we get even closer to Tuesday, as I said a moment ago, there’ll be a lot more factual things even by then that we can dig into, Andy and I can. But in the meantime, I would be really, really careful in what you share and claim as being, you know, this is exactly who this kid was. At this point in time, we don’t know. We have no idea.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, we absolutely do not know. I hypothesize.
SPEAKER 08 :
What we do know is his dad was a—we know his dad’s a 20-year sheriff. Oh, yeah, yeah. We do know that. That is a fact.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, and the latest I’ve heard from—this is from Town Hall magazine, so that’s a reputable source. Does that mean it’s true? No, folks. This is so early in the process. They’re saying parents were Republican, but he had moved—gone away from their belief system. Obviously, I was raised by Democrats. I know what that’s like. OK, so I don’t know. I don’t know. All I know is this. He wanted to kill and he did.
SPEAKER 08 :
They claim that he was involved, which I’ve never heard of this movement, the GRIPER, G-R-O-Y-P-E-R, GRIPER, GRIPER. Have you ever heard of anything along those lines? Nope. Have you, Charlie, ever heard of it? I’ve never heard of any such thing, any such group, by the way. So that’s something I’ll have to do some research on because I have no idea what that even means. I’ve never heard that term even before now.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, the closest reports we have are that he did write basically a number of things that were clearly backing of Antifa and pro-trans and that kind of stuff. Those were the early reports. Once again, this is why I like that we’re not going to talk about it in detail today because by Monday we’re going to have a lot of new facts. Right. And we’re really going to know what’s going on. I’ll simply say this. Young generations have been indoctrinated, I will use that word, indoctrinated into believing that a bunch of people who are not dangerous really are. And you’re going to have a certain percentage of those people then think, my goodness, maybe it would be acceptable to take them out. And what’s really disconcerting is when you look at the poll numbers of Democrats, how many of them believe that to some degree or another this kind of thing is okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, that was the most disturbing thing of the week, Andy, was all of that. Right. All of the applause, maybe that’s the right word to use, for the murdering, for the assassination of Charlie Kirk. The applause from, and these were people from the left, the applause from the left was just abhorrent.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, let me close with this. I want to say something about you, John Rush. If somebody on the left were killed in this way, I know that you would behave exactly the opposite of what all those are doing.
SPEAKER 08 :
Absolutely. I said that this last week.
SPEAKER 04 :
You would mourn their death. You would not look for every reason to say, you know, oh, but they were terrible, they were this or that, but, you know, oh, but we shouldn’t kill. You would simply say… This is wrong. This is monstrous. I pray for their family. It’s a tragedy. It shouldn’t be that way.
SPEAKER 08 :
That’s right. Absolutely. All right. We’ve got more fun coming your way, so we start off that way. We’ll talk again more about that on Tuesday for sure. Never fear. And as Andy said, there’ll be a lot more factual details out by Tuesday that we can talk about.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. And by the way, today we’re going to do three movies. Yes, go ahead. What are they? Well, really quick here. They are Light of the World, The Long Walk, and Baltimore Ons. And the reason I want to start with Light of the World is it’s a Christian movie, and it’s about… Jesus. And I think right now is a very good time to start with that.
SPEAKER 08 :

SPEAKER 04 :
Back to Rush to Reason. And welcome back to Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560, John Rush, together with Andy Pate and John! Are you ready for a movie? After this week?
SPEAKER 08 :
Yes. Absolutely. Yes, I am, absolutely.
SPEAKER 04 :
Let me tell you what, this movie is one I think we really need right now. Another cartoon about Jesus? It’s a Christian film that’s not from Angel Studios in Light of the World.
SPEAKER 05 :
Walker into one! He’s the king of all kings!
SPEAKER 23 :
I knew a guy who ate those.
SPEAKER 14 :
The baptizer?
SPEAKER 23 :
With the honey and the wild hair.
SPEAKER 14 :
That gets me every time.
SPEAKER 22 :
about this Jesus Jesus is no messiah he’s nothing and sometimes evil men silence those who speak the truth what is true this is not the end it’s the beginning
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, what do you think, John? Sound nice?
SPEAKER 08 :
You know, this is one I did watch previews on. Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay. Well, this is the story about Jesus, of course, from his ministry to death to resurrection. As is often the case with Bible movies, the account is given from the perspective of one person, thus helping us see the life of Jesus in a new light, which is kind of interesting, right? That person is John. The Baptist? No! It’s John the Apostle, who was widely viewed as the youngest apostle. That provides a different wow factor for the teenage follower. You can kind of understand it a little better. Now, before he meets Jesus, we see young John with his mother, Salome, and his father, Zebedee. Mom is excited about the coming Messiah. Dad isn’t. You know, John, it’s like a lot of church families, right? The mother gets everybody up on Sunday, and the dad is just like, you know, I don’t believe, we’ve waited long enough. I don’t think this Messiah is coming. Well, this is a fishing family, and one day John is told to sell the daily catch. His dad is trusting this to him, even though he’s the youngest. Well, this is important since he must also pay off Matthew, the tax collector. Well, through a bout of clumsiness, John offends a centurion and loses most of the money. The message from Matthew, get me twice as much in three days. So John has a different reason for seeking out Jesus. He wants help for his family’s financial problem. That’s kind of interesting. I’d never thought about that. But then he sees the miracles and hears the message, so he joins the ragtag group of disciples. From here we see Jesus bring light to the darkness, whether in our community, our lives, or even ourselves. This wasn’t the expected Messiah who would overthrow the oppressors. This Messiah overthrew everything within us. The question is, will this film do more than relay history? Can it change us? And that’s the story of Light of the World. What do you think? Well, sounds great, of course. Okay, well, what works in Light of the World? Well, first of all, the simplistic cartoonistry. One sec. Sorry about that. It’s a real throwback to earlier times. It’s simpler to look at, helping us focus on the story. And, you know, the pace is excellent, too. But back to the cartoonistry. Having that simple look I think is a lot easier for kids to follow.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
That makes sense.
SPEAKER 08 :
I get that.
SPEAKER 04 :
The cartoons today are so beautiful, but it’s almost like they’re made for people in their 20s and 30s, right? And this, kids can really follow it, and, of course, I could, too. The pace, excellent. No, they’re covering a lot of ground. I’ll get to that in a moment. Interesting take on Jesus. He’s a nice guy, relaxed personality. Watching him wince at John the Baptist eating locusts, that was a good touch. I like that. He’s more real. I like that Jesus is more real. All right. All vocal performances are spot on from lesser known actors also. But every single one, they nailed it. I like that. Showing the personal life of one young apostle really brings a human touch to Christ. One that I hadn’t seen before. Now, here’s the biggie. Of course, it’s faithful to Scripture. Some details are blended, but they’re covering a lot of ground here, John. So they’re kind of adding in, taking a liberty here and a liberty there, but they’re not messing with any doctrines. And I understand that. I was very impressed with how they kind of blended events and so forth. And still, it was all true. I like that because, come on, it’s an hour and a half. I liked how Jesus seems very human despite his godhood. very relatable which i like yeah yeah it was most don’t do that no a lot of them don’t and they almost have them speaking you almost think they’re going to have them speaking in king james right right there’s none of that here he’s just a guy very good okay who i like that yeah he’s one of us but i like that he’s also the son of god right and finally this is i can’t say a shockingly timely message about being silenced or even killed for speaking the truth in a fallen world wow. I mean, what a time for this movie to be out. It was something. And the reason I mentioned that is you could just, when words about that were spoken in the theater, you could just feel a hush over the crowd.
SPEAKER 09 :
Hmm.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right, what doesn’t work in Light of the World? The plainness of the cartoonistry makes this feel almost TV-worthy. It’s lower budget, and you can tell, and I’m just going to be honest with that. I don’t want people going to this saying, Andy, that looked a little lower budget. That wasn’t like Disney. No, it is not.
SPEAKER 09 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, I didn’t mind. I thought it looked pretty cool. Okay. But, just letting you know, there is an altar call at the end, and this seems, yeah, I don’t know. It just seems highly unlikely any non-Christians are going to go to this. But maybe they will. I mean, it’s possible. Could you bring, I guess that’s always the question, could you bring a non-Christian kid to this movie? It depends on the parents. Obviously, not if the parents are anti-Christian. I think that’s going to be pushing too far. But if… If this is just friends of your children and you would like them to see this as a witness, I always feel a little queasy about bringing other people’s kids to things like that, John. I do. Because how would I feel if my kids’ friends were bringing them to Muslim messages or to Hindu messages and things like that? So I always think of do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Mm-hmm. I don’t know, but I will say this. It’s harmless at the very least. There’s nothing that’s pushing you into anything bad, but at the end, there is an altar call, so I just wanted people to know.
SPEAKER 09 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right. Rotten Tomatoes, they gave this 83%. Now, that’s a very high score, but I did look, and these were mostly faith-based. You didn’t have a lot of the major reviewers even watching this movie. So there’s a bit of a bias there. The crowds, though, who went to it, obviously Christian crowds, gave it around 95. I mean, they really liked it. Do I like it? Yes. Quality, three and a half stars. Okay. I personally, just for the way it was quick on its feet and the way it conveyed things in a light fashion and conveyed it, Jesus, from, I think, a very good perspective. I personally liked it more. For me, it was at least a four star. Wow. Okay. But I can understand. I’m talking general audiences here. For general audiences, I think three and a half is about where a lot of them would put it. Do I recommend going to this? Yes, I do. Political, three. Obviously, it didn’t say anything about politics. Moral, religious, five. Five? Yep.
SPEAKER 08 :
I was going to say, yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, but there have been Jesus movies that weren’t.
SPEAKER 08 :
True. Good point.
SPEAKER 04 :
Where I’m like, hey, man, they put in some agenda here, some agenda there. Good point. I didn’t see any agenda. And I like that. I don’t want you to try to fit in some modern agenda about pro-war, anti-war, pro-this, anti-that. It was just telling the story, but in a fresh way. I like it. Do I recommend going to Light of the World? Yes, I do. I think it’s definitely worth seeing. And who did this movie? Oh, gosh, I don’t have it in front of me. I’m sorry, John. I was having to do three movies this week, so I was having to pile through it. But, yeah, I’m sorry. I don’t have it in front of me. No, no, that’s fine. That’s fine. But it was a very Christian group. There was no weird doctrine. So I feel pretty good about it. The product itself is very safe.
SPEAKER 08 :
Good movie.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, very good movie. I liked it. Light of the world.

SPEAKER 06 :
The best export we have is common sense. You’re listening to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 04 :
And welcome back to Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560, John Rush, together with Andy Pate, and John! Are you ready for a second movie? This one I saw the previews to. Yeah, pretty interesting, right? Okay, an early Stephen King book gets a chilling new film in The Walk.
SPEAKER 05 :
It takes heavy sack to sign up for this contest. I’m not going to go through the whole rule book, but it boils down to this. If you fall below the speed of three miles per hour, you get your ticket. Walk until there’s only one of you left. Who’s ready to win? It took me a while to realize the truth of this. This is walk or die. as long as you can. But sometimes the body won’t listen. For some, your heart will stop. For others, your brain. And the blood will flow suddenly. There’s one winner. And no finish line.
SPEAKER 08 :
What do you think, John? Like I said, I saw the previews and it’s kind of a… It’s just weird.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, it is. Okay, well, we’ve seen these dystopian films before, right? Where collapsed societies use young people as pawns in terrifying ways. I mean, the most famous was what? Hunger Games. Right. Yeah, but there have been a bunch of them. In The Walk, we have a simple premise. America’s been torn apart by a terrible war and now descends into barbaric practice… of having a bunch of young men walk until all but one drop. They take one from every state. So you got 50. Okay. Okay. If you can’t maintain three miles an hour, you’re shot. And that’s the end.
SPEAKER 08 :
It’s that simple.
SPEAKER 04 :
It’s that simple. Are these volunteers? Sadly, yes. Times are desperate, and the winner is set for life. But it’s such a gruesome reality. Only one will live. Again, it’s like the Hunger Games. And now there are a few well-known young actors in this. Cooper Hoffman, I don’t know if you remember him. He was great in Licorice Pizza. Did you see that? I did. Surprising little movie. I don’t really think that’s your kind of movie, but it was a very good movie. It’s different strokes, right? Here he’s a central character named Raymond, number 47. So he’s 47th, right? He’s neither athletic nor impressive, but Raymond, he makes some profound statements. David Johnson, he stole the show in Alien Romulus, and here he plays the upbeat Peter, number 23. Ben Wang was terrific in the Karate Kid Legends, and now he’s Hank, number 46. There are many more, which, of course, means what are we going to see a lot of? Death, right? I mean, that’s what you’re going to be watching. But what else do we see? Well, we see relationships and interesting dialogue, believe it or not. I was really interested to see, okay, could they keep this up? And as the miles go by, characters bond in their misery, even finding happy moments. Hovering over them is the Major. He’s played by Mark Hamill. Now, he’s a sadistic military leader. He helped produce this idea, and he loves their doom. What a monster. Much of this is an allegory for war, and I believe that’s why King wrote it. So Mark played himself. Yeah, basically. Sorry. I know. Sorry. Look, in real life, I think he’s a class A jerk. Yes, he is. Okay, but setting that aside. And he is in the movie as well. Oh, yes, he is. All right. Yes, he is. This was written by Stephen King, apparently in response to the senselessness of Vietnam. All right. And why do aging overlords in society sacrifice the young? And they do for their ends. Well, ultimately, we’ll witness exhaustion, torment, brutality, and savagery. And that is the story of The Long Walk. What do you think?
SPEAKER 08 :
It looks gruesome. Yeah. The previews look gruesome.
SPEAKER 04 :
That’s a tough watch. Okay, well, what works in The Long Walk? First of all, John, the writing is pretty good. Given the setting, it really is. You’ve got some good lines. You have a number of plot twists. I like that. Terrific acting, start to finish. Hamilton. Hey, hats off to him. He’s a great sadistic villain. Did a great job. Hoffman and Johnson, they lead the way, but the entire cast is tremendous. There is no one in this movie who didn’t come through where I was thinking, you’re taking me out of the realism here. Nope. Every single one of them was spot on. Now, it’s strange watching the beauty of nature, by the way, surrounding a death walk. I’m just going to say that that was kind of an interesting theme throughout it. It’s a great irony also. This attempts to be a left-wing film because it shows the inhumanity of silencing free speech at one point. But in reality, this has become a prime right-wing theme. in america okay it’s the right that doesn’t want speech right now it’s right so i thought this is kinda interesting because they were depicting hamill is very much a traditional right wing militaristic kinda guy who would stop people from you’re reading this talking that speaking out on this And yet, that is totally the theme of the left right now. So I don’t know if this really has, I think it intended to have a left-wing view. And Stephen King, by the way, came out and said some very insensitive things about Charlie Kirk.
SPEAKER 08 :
Which he had to retract.
SPEAKER 04 :
Which he had to retract because he’s a jerk too. Right. Okay. But I don’t know if it really came off this way in the movie. To me, I could very easily take it as my side. So I prefer to look at it as no sign.
SPEAKER 09 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay. It’s just because I think we can all agree or I wish we could all agree. Free speech. Good thing. Okay. And finally, I loved watching friendship develop in the heart of hopelessness. Again, like war. It does. Some of the best friends that you could ever have were with you in a foxhole. All right. What doesn’t work in the long walk? Well, I got to say it, John, the premise is ridiculous. It is. What idiot in any society would sign up for this? Seriously. You have a 1 in 50 chance. A 1 in 50 chance of surviving? We’re watching the impossible. There’s no way this would happen. These morons are even rah-rah for a while. Sure, that’s depicting King’s view of war. I get that. And I can believe war. I can’t buy any of this. And so the entire time I’m watching this, I’m thinking… You know, at the beginning, Hamill gives some like speech explaining every time we do this, our GDP jumps forward. You are doing a service for our nation, yada, yada, yada, which, of course, is also an allegory of war. Whenever we get into a war, wars can take us out of a depression.
SPEAKER 10 :
Right.
SPEAKER 04 :
But it was you’re sitting there thinking, I’m not buying any of this. None of this makes any sense. You’re you’re depicting something that wouldn’t happen otherwise.
SPEAKER 08 :
Even in the worst of times.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. Because even if you form this thing, nobody would volunteer for it. Now, you could make people do it, but these are volunteers. Okay? It doesn’t make it.
SPEAKER 08 :
It would be one thing if they went and rounded up 50 young men.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
That would have actually been better, right?
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, yeah. Because that’s more plausible. And that’s also more the way they do it in Hunger Games, and that’s why it works. Right? Yeah. So it didn’t really work. It’s too long at two hours and 15 minutes and far, far, far too predictable. OK, you know what’s coming, right? You know, they’re going to die in some different ways. Yes. But this is really 49 are going to die. Yeah, 49. But you have a good idea who will make the final group. You really do. Right away.
SPEAKER 08 :
Typically how they start movies off.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
So you just watch character. You can kind of figure out, you know, this guy’s probably going to be it.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. John, I’m sorry, but when it’s totally predictable and I have to watch through the first hour and 15, hour and 20, hour and a half, hour and a half really, just to get to the group where I know it’s going to be, okay, that’s watching a lot of stuff play out that I knew was going to happen. That’s a long run. OK, it’s not just a long walk. It’s a long run for me. And I’ll be honest, it was monotonous. It became monotonous because of that. Even though I was enjoying a lot of the dialogue, I don’t think it was scintillating. I think at moments it was very profound. But even though I was enjoying the acting, which I thought was terrific. I was bored. It’s like, you know.
SPEAKER 08 :
And that’s not how the movie is. You know, the previews don’t make it look like that.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. Of course. And obviously it’s not totally boring. Why? Because you’re seeing horror. Horror is not boring. Horror is shocking. And it wakes you up. And, you know, every time you see one drop or get shot, yeah. Okay. I’m not heartless, but I am a movie critic. And I’m watching this and I’m thinking, is it entertaining? Okay. Yeah. Or is it preachy? And to me, John, it was preachy. I think that this was trying very hard to be an allegory about war and not to be as entertaining as it could be. And I thought it really fell short in that degree. All right. So Rotten Tomatoes, of course, they give it 93%. I don’t think it’s a bad movie. I’m going to give it three and a half stars. I just can’t go all the way up to 93. Okay. All right. I’m giving you this quality three and a half stars. Just because of the acting, some of the writing, and the look of it, the directing, it was pretty good. Political, I’m going to go, golly gee, it’s anti-war. So, but I mean, I’m anti-war for the most part. Political three. I’m going to give it, I think it is what you, it’s a Rorschach test. You take it how you want.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right. More religious, two and a half. They just get a little more out there with the language.
SPEAKER 08 :
They need to.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, yeah. It’s a little exaggerated, but you know.
SPEAKER 08 :
It’s the end of the world, though.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, I’m just telling you. Look, I’m just letting people know what will be in the movie. That’s all. Okay. So I’ll give it two and a half. I’ll just knock it down a half star. Do I recommend going to the Long Walk? Yeah. If you like that kind of movie, right? If you like that kind of movie.
SPEAKER 08 :
The dystopian end of the world, you know.
SPEAKER 04 :
Dystopian depression. Yes. If you’re into dystopian depression movies, and a lot of people are, by the way.
SPEAKER 08 :
They are.
SPEAKER 04 :
And you are just fascinated at watching death parade by. then yes, by all means watch it because this will have better acting than you generally see. I love the main two. Actually, I love the main probably six actors.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
They’re all terrific.
SPEAKER 08 :
I mean, I think certain people, myself included, like those sorts of movies to get your juices flowing as to if things got to this point, what would it actually be like?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. And that is the only thing that I had a problem with. It wouldn’t be like this.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right. Because you’re not going to get the volunteers.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, you’re not. It’s ridiculous. What idiot if they are still I don’t get me wrong. Everybody is poor and suffering. The country is torn apart. It’s poverty stricken. I get all that terrible economy. But wherever they are in these 50 states, they’re still breathing. They’re still alive.
SPEAKER 08 :
They’re upright.
SPEAKER 04 :
They’re upright. Yeah. And to jump into a one in 50 chance for riches. No, not like that.
SPEAKER 08 :

SPEAKER 04 :
Now back to Rush to Reason on KLZ 560. And welcome back to Rush to Reason. Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. John Rush together with Andy Pate. And John, are you ready for a third movie? Our last one. Yep, it’s a triple feature, John. Triple feature. Okay, well, opposites attract with unexpected results in The Baltimoreans.
SPEAKER 17 :
What’s going on? This morning, Dad got married.
SPEAKER 16 :
So they’re doing their reception.
SPEAKER 17 :
Tonight. I know Christmas Eve is your favorite.
SPEAKER 16 :
It’s good. It’s okay.
SPEAKER 17 :
I love you, Mom. I’ll see you tomorrow.
SPEAKER 16 :
Merry Christmas. I love you.
SPEAKER 17 :
Oh, my God.
SPEAKER 12 :
I’m taking you to dinner, and I’m not taking no for an answer.
SPEAKER 15 :
No. Come on.
SPEAKER 12 :
No. I overheard you talking to your daughter, and I know you don’t have plans. Let’s go.
SPEAKER 11 :
No! Yes! Ba-da-ba-ba-ba-ba! Charge! Charge! You married?
SPEAKER 16 :
I was.
SPEAKER 11 :
Oh, I’m sorry. Did he kill himself?
SPEAKER 16 :
Why would you say that?
SPEAKER 11 :
It was a dumb joke.
SPEAKER 16 :
Is that what you do?
SPEAKER 11 :
Comedy. Used to do it, and something messed up happened, and I don’t do it anymore.
SPEAKER 16 :
This is really odd, but my entire family is two blocks that way.
SPEAKER 12 :
Let’s crash a party.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yeah?
SPEAKER 12 :
Hell yeah.
SPEAKER 16 :
Hello. Mom?
SPEAKER 14 :
What are you doing? Hi, everybody. Cliff Cashin. Really, really thrilled to be here. Your mom’s pretty awesome. We’ve been having the most amazing day together.
SPEAKER 01 :
Me lady.
SPEAKER 12 :
I can get out of the car on my own, you jackass.
SPEAKER 15 :
All around the same time I went through menopause, my ex dealt me for a much younger woman and I became a grandmother. What?
SPEAKER 16 :
Your face. Where are we going with this kid?
SPEAKER 12 :
I have no idea. I just really like you.
SPEAKER 18 :
Is that the ghost from Christmas Past?
SPEAKER 16 :
Where’s the next ghost of Christmas Past? Or did you divorce her already?
SPEAKER 14 :
Well, I guess that makes me the ghost of Christmas Present. Cliff Cashin, still really, really thrilled to be here, gang. Thank you.
SPEAKER 04 :
What do you think? Sounds funny. Yeah, it does. And he is a very enjoyable guy, by the way. He is the actor Michael Strassner, and he stars as Cliff. He’s a comic with a miserable life. See, John, Cliff does improv. But there’s incredibly little paying work for improv. Think about that. Comedy clubs, yes. How many improv clubs are there? Not very many. Yeah, not very many. Most people don’t want to watch that. Worse yet, the entire improv atmosphere drew Cliff into alcoholism and attempting suicide. Well, Cliff is engaged to Brittany. She’s played by Olivia… All right. And I’ve seen her around and she never wants him entering the improv world again for obvious reasons. He’s been sober now for six months and it needs to continue. Well, during the Christmas season, Cliff has a minor accident, chipping a tooth, bleeding and miserable. He finds the only dentist who will help that night. And her name is Didi. Well, played by Liz Larson, who I’d never seen before. So this was interesting. Dee Dee is a very real character. She’s in a lousy mood as disappointment takes her from family obligations. She’s divorced, bitter, and a workaholic. And that’s the only reason that she’s the only one available that night. Well, Cliff is incredibly annoying. I think you got that from listening to the preview. Yeah. He’s a very annoying guy and terrified of pain. Dee Dee can’t stand him. I mean, she really can’t. She can’t wait for this to be over. But through a bizarre set of circumstances, she winds up having to drive him home. Well, over time, Cliff’s crazy personality disarms Dee Dee and an unlikely bond forms. They each go to situations that scare them and they do it for each other. This was very interesting. Dee Dee, she brings Cliff to a Christmas party at her ex-husband’s home. Okay, where the new woman is, all of it, because she’s been invited there because mom is there, kids are there, you know how it is. Sometimes you get invited to awkward parties. This is one of those. Cliff brings Dee Dee to an improv house. That’s his hell, his personal hell. And each of them finds support from the other. They each find support from the other that they never expected. Because he is irritating. She hated him. They had nothing in common. And she was just his emergency dentist. and was trying to get on her way. And here they wind up being the two people who go to each other’s worst nightmare to get them through it. Okay. Which I kind of liked. Well, can this grow into romance? And what about Brittany, Cliff’s girlfriend? And in a working class like Baltimore, can two people find magic in one surprising relationship? And that’s the story of the Baltimore-ons.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
What do you think? Doesn’t sound bad. All right. Well, what works in the Baltimore-ons? First of all, these aren’t beautiful people, and I like that. Okay, Stroessner, he looks like a young Rob Reiner. You know Rob Reiner. Meathead, right? He really looks like him. He and Larson have excellent chemistry, both when she hates him and as things change. He is a genuinely funny guy. A very… I really enjoyed him. I like how at the party he keeps saying, really, really thrilled to be here. Thank you. And he was, nobody knows him. And he’s telling them how thrilled he is to be there. It was funny. He’s a funny guy, perhaps funnier in his hopelessness. It’s partly because he has no hope in life. That you might as well just be funny and be yourself.
SPEAKER 08 :
Gotcha.
SPEAKER 04 :
And have you ever noticed when you’re in a totally hopeless situation, it takes away all your inhibitions? Just be yourself, because why not? Right? I like that. It was fascinating to see her hopelessness, too, as only he could put a light in her eyes. she was very tense very bitter very upset at life and only he could put a smile on her face okay now is the film funny i think that’s the main thing right is it well written yes i laughed a good number of times and yet these two characters also totally drew me in all right so i i cared more about them honestly john than most characters i see in movies today i have Probably, I would say, less than 10 movies a year where I really care about the characters this much and feel involved in them. Really like seeing them because these two felt so real. The camera work, it was almost just video. of your phone worthy it was better than that don’t get me wrong but it felt so real it felt so normal the homes the houses were not upscale not you know not hollywoody they were everything was just totally real and i felt drawn in i liked it and finally oh you got a terrific performance really quick from olivia lucardi as britney his girlfriend you really feel for her Okay, because she’s been there for him through his worst times. And this is really hard for her, this whole thing. I guess a big thing also for me was that this was totally plausible. As crazy as Cliff can be, the film just breezes along. It takes you along. And just as good, there were the sad moments when Cliff and Dee Dee, they shared life’s frustrations with each other. There’s just a lot going on here. I’m not giving you any of the points, but I’m telling you the basic feel for it. It’s good. It’s very good. What doesn’t work, though, in Baltimore Ons? Well, the actual stand-up improv wasn’t very entertaining at all. And that surprised me. I kind of figured, okay, that’ll be the scene where they really go for the yucks. It wasn’t. It ends well, but it was meh. I was pretty surprised, and that was a letdown. Because if he has to go in and do this, you kind of feel, okay, this will be a really funny scene. It wasn’t. It was depressing watching this relationship bloom when another was failing. That was kind of hard for me to watch. And there were several moments depicting racist attitudes toward black people, but none the other way. We’re in Baltimore. Right. So you depict or talk about bad racial attitudes toward black people, but no bad racial attitudes toward white people in Baltimore. I’m sorry, but that was just are we in the opposite world here? Right. OK. Bottom line is racism goes every way. And it was just very imbalanced. It was a bit out of place also for such a feel good film. And those are just little moments. It wasn’t hovering over you the whole time. But it was just a couple little moments and you’re just kind of like, you know, could have done without that. All right. Rotten Tomatoes loved this movie. They gave it 95%. Now, I’m going to give it two scores. General score, you can write this one down, three and a half stars. So all three movies today, three and a half stars. This is a well-made movie in that the acting is very, very good. The writing is quite good. The directing, it’s all good. And it breezes along. It is a little long, but it’s good. Political, I’m going to give it two for the reasons I just mentioned. Moral, religious, three. It doesn’t preach at you. Either way, so that’s good. This is a movie, though, for certain people. For me, this is four and a half. This is a movie that I really enjoyed. Okay. Okay. But different people like different kinds of movies. Do I think John Rush would enjoy this movie to a degree? Yeah. Do I think he’d enjoy it as much as me? No, you know, it’s just, we, you and I have a little different kinds of movies. We like, do I recommend going to the Baltimore on the, Yeah. Yeah, I do. If you want to see a breezy, romantic comedy that is very different from what you’ve seen before, go to the Baltimore Ons. I think you’ll have a nice night out.

SPEAKER 08 :
All right, we are back. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Myself, Andy Pate, Charlie Grimes. Question of the day. On his way to being inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, President Abraham Lincoln, during his 12 years of wrestling, was known to have only lost one match out of how many? And it was one out of 300. Wow. Did you know he was a wrestler? I did not know.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, I actually did know he wrestled.
SPEAKER 08 :
Really? You did? I did not know that.
SPEAKER 04 :
I knew that about him. I did not know he wrestled like that that much. I’d like to know who beat him.
SPEAKER 08 :
Some short guy.
SPEAKER 04 :
That guy must have been really good.
SPEAKER 08 :
I have no idea. Because he was really tall, right? Abe was.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, he was pretty tall.
SPEAKER 08 :
Tall, lanky.
SPEAKER 04 :
Fairly, yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
I guess. I mean, I don’t know. Obviously very strong. Obviously. Obviously. All right. Today’s impossible question. Why was the book Green Eggs and Ham banned in China from 1965 to 1991? Why was the book Green Eggs and Ham banned in China from 1965 to 1991?
SPEAKER 04 :
Does a communist nation need much reason to ban something?
SPEAKER 08 :
No, but in this case, which I didn’t really know this about green eggs and ham, I’ll give you the answer towards the end of next hour, those of you that are listening, instead of waiting all the way until Monday. This is a good one, because I would not have guessed this at all. Charlie, any idea why green eggs and ham would have been banned? I would have never guessed this.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
So those of you that are listening, stay tuned. Don’t cheat. You can wait and get the answer here at the end of next hour. Okay. And for next hour, Andy, we’re going to do what you and Richard will start off. We’ll do NFL picks. Right. Correct. And then we’re going to do what movies?
SPEAKER 04 :
We’re going to do school movies because it’s that time of year, John. Every year we do our back-to-school segment. Back-to-school, back-to-school. Yeah, movies of school. Obviously, it’s a pretty broad category. Give us a call. Let us know which ones you like.
SPEAKER 08 :
And if you want to start texting some of those in on the forefront, you’re more than welcome to. Now, one thing I should always say for a lot of you that listen to the replay of our hours, which we appreciate greatly, by the way, just remember that that particular hour we do it one time. And then we get on the road and head home. So you can text in all of your suggestions that you want, and I’ll add them to my list, but we’re not going to mention those on air because we’re no longer here. We’re out of here. Exactly. And even in this case, sometimes you guys will even text in about the topics or the movies or different things that Andy does during the first hour, which this will be replaying from 5 p.m. It’ll be almost 6 o’clock when you’re hearing this as a replay. Again, you can text us all of those things, and I’ll read them, and I’ll even respond, but we can’t mention things on air if it’s in the replay hours.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, we cannot.
SPEAKER 08 :
It’s not Andy and I doing the same thing twice.
SPEAKER 04 :
We don’t do time travel. We’re not good at that.
SPEAKER 1 :
No, we are not.
SPEAKER 04 :
Although, you know, when John Rush really, really wants to get home, he does drive pretty fast.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, man, I wish I could just, you know, what is that, the old Star Trek, you know, just transport me?
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, John, after a couple hours looking at me, you want to look at your wife?
SPEAKER 08 :
It’s that green T-shirt he’s wearing that says Packers all over it.
SPEAKER 04 :
I know. It’s terrible, isn’t it?
SPEAKER 08 :
He’s always wearing this Packers outfit. For those of you that don’t know Andy, well, you should by now know that he’s a Packer fan. We’ll talk about it. Did they win last night, by the way? They did, didn’t they? Yeah, they did. They killed the Redskins?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yes. The Redskins. Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
It’s the Commanders, right? Whatever. They’ll always be the Redskins to me, Andy. Yeah, I don’t, you know, I’ve never cared. Yeah, anyways. All right, we’ll be back. Don’t go anywhere. Hour 2 is next. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 1 :
Thank you.
Andy’s 5-Star Reviews: Back to School Movies & The Joe Burrow Conundrum
