HR2 Powering the Outdoors: How America’s Energy Workers Keep Hunting and Fishing Thriving. 9-18-25 by John Rush
SPEAKER 04 :
This is Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 05 :
You are going to shut your damn yapper and listen for a change because I got you pegged, sweetheart. You want to take the easy way out because you’re scared. And you’re scared because if you try and fail, there’s only you to blame. Let me break this down for you. Life is scary. Get used to it.
SPEAKER 04 :
There are no magical fixes. With your host, John Rush.
SPEAKER 05 :
My advice to you is to do what your parents did. Get a job first. You haven’t made everybody equal. You’ve made them the same and there’s a big difference.
SPEAKER 13 :
Let me tell you why you’re here. You’re here because you know something. What you know you can’t explain, but you feel it. You’ve felt it your entire life. That there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there. It is this feeling that has brought you to me.
SPEAKER 06 :
Are you crazy? Am I? Or am I so sane that you just blew your mind?
SPEAKER 12 :
It’s Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush. Presented by Cub Creek Heating and Air Conditioning.
SPEAKER 09 :
And we’re back, Hour 2, Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Our next guest joining us now, Scott Angel. Scott, how are you? Founder of USA Energy Workers. Welcome back.
SPEAKER 06 :
I am great, and it’s good to hear your voice. And a special shout-out to those Denver Broncos and our homeboy, Sean Payton. There we go. Super Bowl coming your way.
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, we sure hope so, Scott. And speaking of things that are coming around the corner, fantastic things, I should say, September 27th, so next Saturday, Americans will go out of the woods and waters to celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day. And what folks don’t realize is because of what our energy workers do, there’s a lot of what they’re going to go enjoy on behalf of them?
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, there’s no doubt. Look, in addition to producing the energy to fuel this great country and this great economy, energy workers do so much more. Congress over the years has softened to dedicate a portion of the revenue that is generated on federal lands and waters to restoration, conservation, and those projects are showing up in a zip code near you every day, either through the Great American Outdoors Act or or the Land and Water Conservation Fund. And these congressional acts have dedicated funds to these outdoor projects. In your area, the Rocky Mountain National Park, Gunnison Valley Project, including Alpine Tunnel, Taylor Canyon, also the National Forest in Colorado. We’d like to think that we do more than just fuel this country. We help make sure that these monies are available to help the outdoor recreation project opportunities in this country. And we’ve been doing it for a while. And it’s important, I believe, that the listeners of America understand that it is really more than just about energy, that what we do with our oil and gas business here in America is we balance the three E’s. It’s really a balance between energy, environment, and economy, John.
SPEAKER 09 :
I didn’t realize this, but some of what you just said on an annual basis generates almost, not quite, just a little under $3 billion a year. In other words, it’s not a small amount of money.
SPEAKER 06 :
No, look, outdoor recreation is a big deal in America. Our folks love to hunt and fish all across in all 50 states. And, again, you know, when we talk about National Hunting and Fishing Day, we have made a connection to the USA energy worker who gets up every day, puts on his hard hat, his steel-toed boots, kisses his family goodbye, sets out to do the hard work, no doubt, to bring energy to our great states. But at the same time, it’s important, I believe, for the national conversation that folks know a great deal of the money that is generated for the federal treasury is, in fact, dedicated to conservation and recreation opportunities. And it’s a real cool thing, right? Yeah, absolutely. Take some of the proceeds from our non-renewable resources and put them into taking care of our renewable resources. And that is a big deal. And the western states in particular, Colorado, big winners with this policy. So we’re excited about it. And we want folks to go out and celebrate not only when you talk about the huge impact. of the economic number that you just spoke about, the jobs, right? So many jobs associated with outdoor activity, and USA Energy workers are proud to be a part to make it even a better experience, if you would, sir.
SPEAKER 09 :
No, and Scott, you just bring up some great points. I mean, a lot of people just think about the – how should I say this? The energy worker in this case. And granted, there is a ton of – for all of you listening, and my listeners probably know this, Scott, but there are so many – byproducts and additional jobs created through the energy sector in the United States of America. I mean, Scott, you would know this number better than I, but you could literally take that one well, that one energy worker, that one natural gas, the BTU coming out of it and so on, and literally, I don’t know what the multiplier is, Scott, but it’s got to be at least five times when you look at what goes into the rest of the economy. Am I wrong in thinking that? No.
SPEAKER 06 :
You stated exactly right. It is definitely a multiplier effect there. And again, one of the unfortunate things about, we believe, the policy that came out of the previous administration in the White House was to say no to USA Energy workers, at the same time say yes to foreign energy production. about that is a couple of things. Number one, the environmental metrics are better here than they are with many OPEC nations. So that’s number one. But number two, we don’t generate, this is incredible observation that I want you listeners to know. When we get it from a foreign country, we don’t generate the federal revenue. And therefore that revenue is then not available to share with the national forest with U.S. parks and all the kind of things. You know, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which I think has been around since about 1968, has funded at least one project in every county in America, whether it’s a walking track or a tennis court or a swimming pool. And again, all of the money that funds the Land and Water Conservation Fund comes from offshore energy. So when we get it from places like like Iraq, or we get it from Mexico, or we get it from Canada, we don’t generate that federal treasury that can then be shared for these projects. So in a state that loves its woods and waters like Colorado, we believe there’s a strong connection. Yes, sir.
SPEAKER 09 :
Absolutely. Scott, how do folks find you at USA Energy Workers?
SPEAKER 06 :
You know, we would encourage folks to see us at USA Energy Workers dot com. We got a nonpartisan fact based petition. We’d love for you to consider signing it. Let us know that you want to support, again, common sense energy policy that balances the three E’s. We believe in all of the above. We think there’s room for everybody that you can pay your way. We’d also like to say that, you know, in some kind of special way, we believe that if you can read, you ought to thank a teacher. Our teachers deserve our appreciation. If you can read at night,
SPEAKER 09 :
In your cool or warm home, thank a teacher and a USA Energy worker. Amen. Scott, as always, I appreciate it greatly. You’re welcome anytime. Next time you have something that comes up, let me know. We’ll have you back on. Thank you so much, John. I appreciate it. You’re very welcome. And as Scott, his last name, by the way, you can tell where he’s from, Louisiana, but it’s A-N-G-E-L-L-E. But we say it on gel. There’s an O, which is how we say it because of where he’s from. I love Scott, by the way. And he’s been in the previous Trump administration. A key individual doing a great job for the energy, you know, the U.S. energy side of things here. And just a great individual. And I learn something from Scott every time we have him on. Golden Eagle Financial coming up next. And Al did a great interview here of late. Listen in. We’ll be back. If you want to find Al directly, just go to klzradio.com.
SPEAKER 10 :
TJ here with KLZ and Al Smith of Golden Eagle Financial. And Al, I have a question for you. I’ve been putting money away for a while in a savings account or maybe a couple of investment accounts, but what am I doing wrong and what can you do better than that?
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, I think a savings account is important because all the financial gurus, including myself, agree you should have three to six months savings that you have ready liquid access to. But retirement planning is a bit more long-term and And it’s a bit more strategic. We want to take a look at the sum of money you’ll need way into the future. And we want to look at how that money can last by providing you income for as long as you live.
SPEAKER 10 :
What kind of planning or strategy do you provide for folks with that that have a big savings but haven’t made that next step?
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, that’s a good question. If someone has a large amount in savings, one of the things I do is we have a conversation about their risk tolerance. Nobody’s comfortable losing money, but having money in the market over a long period of time is a mechanism to accumulate wealth. And so we talk about the different levels of risk and the different products that are available. And we don’t put everybody into one box, but I have an enormous assortment of financial products. And it’s not that there’s good ones or bad ones. It’s there are some that are more appropriate for some people, but not for others.
SPEAKER 10 :
And that sounds excellent. How can folks get in touch with you for that meeting?
SPEAKER 15 :
You can reach me at 303-744-1128. And if I’m not there, it goes to voicemail, but I return my voicemails promptly. And we could have a conversation in the office. If you live a considerable distance away, we can have a long phone conversation or a Zoom call, whichever you would prefer.
SPEAKER 10 :
And as always, you can find him at klzradio.com slash money. Al, thanks so much for joining us today.
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, thank you, TJ. Thanks for the conversation.
SPEAKER 10 :
You bet.
SPEAKER 03 :
Putting reason into practice. This is John Rush.
SPEAKER 09 :
We are back. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 5CC. Okay, news that came out right before coming on air today. This, I think, came out just literally, I want to say, an hour or so before coming on air. So actually half an hour. 4.27 p.m. Eastern Time, there was an announcement made that Erica Kirk, that is Charlie Kirk’s widow, is going to take lead of Turning Point USA. Andy and I spent a little bit of time on Tuesday talking about, you know, who’s going to be next and so on. And from what the article was that I happened to read today, that in prior discussion, Charlie expressed to multiple executives that this is what he wanted in the event of his death. So one of his wishes, I believe, and the way he had things evidently set up was to have his wife take over And it’s a big job. And by the way, I don’t know her. In fact, I don’t know the organization as well as probably some of you out there listening to. I’ve said this publicly. I’ve watched Charlie through the years sort of develop. I’ve watched Turning Point USA. I even talked about on the podcast, which you guys heard before me coming on air today here live, that While I knew of the organization, watched a lot of different clips from Charlie, I’ve never been to a Turning Point USA rally. I wouldn’t say that I was somebody that followed Charlie Kirk around from event to event to event. Doesn’t mean I didn’t respect him. Doesn’t mean I didn’t like what he was doing. I just – you guys all know me. I don’t do a lot of that, period. I’m not – somebody that typically runs around to a lot of different events i’ve seen donald trump himself at uh one or i think one or two different uh points throughout back when he was running clear back in the you know 2016 uh end of things and then i can’t remember if i saw him this last go around or not honestly i do so many different things i don’t remember i don’t think so i think i’ve only been to one major rally of donald trump’s anyways Partly because I’m not a big rally guy. That’s just me personally. Nothing against him. I’m just not one of those guys. In this particular case, Turning Point, they posted this out this afternoon that Erica is going to be taking over. And again, you know what? Personally, I don’t know enough about them, the organization, the leaders behind it. I don’t know her on a personal level. I can’t tell you if this is a good or bad decision. What I can tell you is if that’s what he wanted, then that’s what’s happening. And as with every organization, things will continue on. And I’m sure the way that the board is even looking at this is, OK, if this is what Charlie wanted and this is the direction things need to head, then this is what we’ll do. This is where we’ll go. I will say this. I know she’s got a lot of of support staff. around her i.e board of directors advisors different people that are surrounding you know turning point and i think she’s got a a you know how should i say she’s got some momentum i think moving forward and that will suit her well and again i don’t know her personally so i’m not going to say anything bad about her and that they are making the wrong choice because i i don’t know her i you know honestly i can’t make that Now, I also will say this. Anybody out there that doesn’t know her intimately and know her in a way where they know her background, know her leadership skills and so on, anybody else saying otherwise, frankly, they’re wrong because they don’t know either. And you’re going to hear some people come out and probably say that wasn’t the best of choices. I’m not going to say that because I don’t know. Here’s what I do know. Anytime there’s a leadership change, and I’ve been through a lot of leadership changes in different organizations, churches, nonprofits, and so on, and here’s what I will say, and I think Charlie can agree with me on this, time will tell. That’s always the way it works. Anytime a long-term pastor that maybe even started a church from scratch and gets to the point where they’re ready to move on or retire or another opportunity comes along and they feel the need to leave and go do something else, and somebody else comes and steps in, Time will tell as to how well the next person in charge does. That’s true with any organization, whether it be a large Fortune 500 company where one CEO steps down and another one steps in, to churches, to nonprofits, to even regular businesses that get bought and sold and so on. It’s always interesting to see what happens when the next leadership team, quote-unquote, comes in. And again, I have no— I have no say in this whatsoever because, frankly, I don’t know really any of them that are on the board or are running Turning Point USA. So I will say, and this is what’s going to be interesting, because I do believe what Andy said on Tuesday is correct, I do feel like they do need a unifier that can come in and help the organization stay unified moving forward in its main mission, and this whole divide that they have going on, and it’s there, on some that are for Israel, some that are against Israel, they’ve got to get that figured out. You know, the the quote unquote Candace Owens of the world, they’re going to have to figure out how to deal with the Tucker Carlson’s of the world. They’re going to have to figure out how to deal with. And hopefully that’s something where Erica can come in and handle that in the right manner and, you know, bring them together some way, somehow. Or you’re going to see some division and you’re going to see some folks probably not be super happy and they may go a different direction. And you know what? Sometimes that happens as well. And honestly, sometimes that’s not all bad. Sometimes that’s not all bad. So it’ll be interesting to see. That was an announcement, though, that was made about a half an hour prior to us coming on air at 3 o’clock. She’s a little older than Charlie, by the way, about five years, by the way. She’s 36, and I believe he was, what, 31, Charlie? Am I saying that right? I think he was 31, so she’s a little older. That’s not bad, by the way. And it’ll be interesting. I didn’t know this. I think my wife was showing me this the other day. Charlie, was she not a Miss Arizona, Miss USA pageant holder or something at one point in time, I believe? A very beautiful lady, by the way. And I will give her hats off for that. She’s a very beautiful lady. And I believe my wife was actually… saying something about that the other night that she was actually um in in the pageant end of things at one point in time again don’t quote me on that i was listening and working and honey if you’re listening i apologize Miss Arizona USA in 2012. So yes, my wife was correct. And I remember her saying something along those lines. I didn’t get the exact date, Charlie, I will be honest. And my wife may have not even given me that exact date, but that’s her background. So that being said, she has some ability in the leadership end of things because you don’t win some of those. And Charlie, you would know this. You typically have to go around after the fact and And do some things publicly and so on. So she’s going to have some experience in that end of things. And of course, she’s been married to Charlie Kirk and they’ve got two young kids and she’s got enough experience along those lines, even sitting probably in the background to know certain things. So again, am I against this pick? No, I’m not. But again, I’m a nobody. I don’t know the organization well enough like I do other organizations to be able to say, yeah, that’s a good pick or no, that’s not a great pick. So, again, I don’t have that ability because, again, I don’t have that insight. I don’t have the intimate knowledge of what’s going on inside of that organization to say otherwise. And frankly, again, I encourage all of you. Unless you do, or unless you know somebody that does, refrain from bad-mouthing this decision. Because you don’t know. She may do a bang-up job. She may come right in and already have some vision, and maybe her and Charlie had already been talking about certain things, and she knows exactly what direction they need to head and what she needs to do to handle certain things. And off she goes. Again, I don’t know. Time will tell. And that’s all I can say now. And I will also say this. I will personally, I’ll give her the grace needed to get in there and get comfortable and move the thing forward and then determine what happens after that. I will be that person that will give her the grace needed to make that happen. By the way, that’s the way everybody should be looking at it. Some will not. Some are going to be probably upset and angry at this decision. I’m not one of those. And again, time will tell how well things work moving forward when it comes to Turning Point USA. Do I think it’s a bad choice? No, I don’t think it’s a bad choice. Was it my top choice? Andy and I discussed that on Tuesday. Probably not. But again, I’m not in charge. I’m not the one that gets to make that decision. I will say that I think there’s probably some people even internally in that organization that probably are are probably a little shocked at the decision, because I think there’s probably some internally that felt like they may have been in the running to take that position versus Erica. But she’s the one that was chosen by the board of directors. And that’s the way it is. So enough said. All right. We take a little bit of an early break because I want to come back and talk about Jimmy Kimmel. And I’m going to come at it in a little different direction probably than what a lot of people out there talking about Jimmy Kimmel are coming from. And I’ll explain that as soon as I come back. Mile High Coin is next. And at Mile High Coin, again, if you’ve got things that you’ve been just sitting on because you thought, yeah, you know, I’ll keep that and I’ll do something with that later on and I’ll just add that to my pile. SPEAKER 09 :
All right, biggest news story right now, I feel, and I don’t think I’m wrong in this, is Jimmy Kimmel. And is he being fired? Is he being let go? What’s going on with his particular show? And so on. Now, there’s been a lot of stuff posted about this. I’ve been reading a lot of social media and so on from all sides, by the way. And I’ll just be straight up honest. Most are wrong. Most are wrong. First of all, people are saying, well, his free speech is being infringed upon. No, it’s not. No, it’s not. He works for somebody. And that’s the first thing that the majority of people forget when they start talking about Jimmy Kimmel in his free speech. What Jimmy said—and by the way, it all had to do with him wanting to shove blame— upon the right for Charlie Kirk’s death when, in fact, it was the farthest thing from the truth. That’s where this all stemmed from. I’m not going to get into all of the exact quotes of what he said and so on. You guys can go look that stuff up. But in essence, what Jimmy was doing was trying to shove blame in one direction That it wasn’t. It’s that simple. He was trying to divert, if you would. He’s trying to divert from anybody saying this was a left-wing lunatic that actually shot Charlie Kirk to blaming it upon our side. Am I correct, Charlie, in basically saying it that way? That’s essentially what Jimmy was doing. Okay? And he’s wrong. He’s a thousand percent wrong. Now, here’s the biggest difference. And this is where we talked about this a little bit, even with Andy on Tuesday. I’ve talked about it on the roundtable as well. But yes, people have freedom of speech. And I will defend that right until I go to the grave. But this isn’t that. And let me explain. When you work for someone, and it’s especially true in this particular case, but it’s true across… all forms of work. And I always have to remind people of this, and it’s something that I wish they taught more in school. When you agree to work for someone, and by the way, it could be as a subcontractor or it could be as an employee. It doesn’t matter in this particular case. When you work for someone else, you’ve agreed to sell your time to that particular company for X amount. That’s the agreement that you’ve made. Now, it may not be in writing. As a subcontractor, it probably is, but it may not be in writing as an employee, but that’s essentially what you’ve done. You, as an individual, have said, okay, XYZ company, I’ve agreed to sell you my time for X amount of dollars in return. And it could be done by the hour. It could be done by the day. It could be done by the week. It could be a salary position. It could be a contract position whereby it’s done on a per item basis or a per job basis. No matter what, though, you have decided, you have agreed to sell your time to that particular person, particular company for X amount. Now, in turn, here’s how this works. That company now owns that time because they paid for it. They bought it. They bought your time. And some would say, well, it’s just modern day slavery. No, it’s not, because you agreed on the front side to the arrangement. You said, I will do X for X. And I will sell you my time for X. Meaning, they now own you. They don’t own you, but they own your time. And in turn, they own your means of production. They own what you’re saying. They own what you’re doing. They own your time and what you’re doing while working for them. Meaning, if they tell you that, hey, you need to wear this uniform to perform this job. Okay, you put the uniform on. You know what? I need you to say this when you answer the phone. Okay, you better say this or you may not have the job. There’s a script, in other words. I need you to do X, Y, Z. Now, at any point in time, if you don’t like that arrangement and you don’t like the way that your time is being purchased, you can agree to leave. And or they can agree to say, you know what? We no longer need your time. We’re not going to buy that time anymore. You need to go sell your time somewhere else. And by the way, if we talked more of the way I am, we’d have less issues in the workplace. Because people wouldn’t feel so entitled when they’re on the job to certain things. Because unless you agreed upon that in the first place, you’re not entitled to it. Now, I get it. We have labor laws and so on. And we have laws that say, you know, you get a 15-minute break in the morning, a 15-minute break in the afternoon. You get a mandatory 30-minute lunch and so on. I get it. Those are laws that we have. And by the way, if as a part of this agreement you want more than that, then you need to settle on that on the front side of your agreement when you go to sell your time to that employer. It’s not hard. Hey, you know, I want two weeks vacation every year. Okay, then you specify that on the front side and you tell that employer that I will sell you my time for X, but included in that is I get two free weeks a year. In other words, I’m not going to be here, but I still get paid. And that employer can say, okay or no. Or in some cases, the employer may even offer that. You know what? I’m going to buy your time for X. And, oh, along with that, I’m going to give you health and dental and maybe this, that, or the other as benefits. And, oh, by the way, you get three weeks vacation. And then you can say, okay, great. I’ll accept that. Again, you’ve made an agreement to sell your time to that particular employer for X amount. Jimmy Kimmel did exactly that. He has said, in this case, it was what, ABC, right, Charlie? Okay, ABC, I will perform, in his case, because he’s a performer, I will perform for you for X amount. And I don’t know, Charlie, whether it was a per show, a per year. Folks, I don’t know. I haven’t read the contract. I don’t know. All of those guys, by the way, have a contract. Guaranteed. He doesn’t get on stage without a contract. Right, Charlie? There is a contract in place that he probably even has an agent that’s getting a cut of. Because in a lot of cases, the agent and the attorneys therein are putting all of this together. Now, I guarantee you somewhere in that contract gives ABC the right to tell Jimmy what he can and can’t say. Guaranteed. What he’s allowed to put out and up. And I’ll give you an example. While I am a contractor for Crawford Broadcasting, I am still my own boss, but I’ve agreed to work with Crawford to produce this show on a daily basis. Only this show, by the way. The other shows I own outright. But this show, Crawford Broadcasting, I agreed to do for X amount. And we’ve had an agreement on that. And I’ve agreed to do that. Now, I also know that I have pretty much free reign to say anything I want to say here on this program. Crawford has never come to me and say, John, you need to say this. But I also know. And by the way, we’re very aligned in our thoughts and our beliefs and so on, so it’s not an issue. But I also know that if I came on here and started spewing out all sorts of Marxist beliefs and talking about the control of production and that communism is the only way to go and we need to change the country around and we need to go after these Marxist ideals and I believe in them and you need to start voting for these particular individuals and you need to start believing this way and that way and I became totally anti-God, I can tell you right now I wouldn’t be on air. Because that is not in line with what Crawford Broadcasting wants for their company. And I know that. And I’m accepting of that. And again, because we’re already aligned, it’s easy for me to do that. But if I were an atheist… And I wanted to come on air and do a show with Crawford Broadcasting knowing it’s a God and country station. And yet I’m an atheist. There might be a conflict of interest there. And I probably would have to decide as an atheist that, OK, I’m probably going to have to work in a few, you know, God things into my programming because I’m on a God and country station. and the Pledge of Allegiance is going to play, and the stand that Mr. Crawford comes out and does is going to play, and we’re going to have Breakpoint, which is one of the commentaries that’s there, and old Bob Duco is going to be on at 5 o’clock, and he’s going to talk about a few things, and that might be going against everything I believe in. I would have to have that understanding on the front side, and you know what? It might not be a good fit for me if I was an atheist. In fact, probably wouldn’t be a good fit if I was an atheist. Meaning, if I went ahead and agreed, I’m not sure Crawford would ever do that, but let’s just say for this particular scenario that Mr. Crawford said, sure, you know what, we need somebody during that slot. John’s doing an awful job. He’s terrible. We’re going to put you in his slot. And so, you know, I don’t know. Joe comes along. and he’s going to go ahead and take my slot. But Joe’s an atheist. Joe’s agreed to go ahead and do things for Crawford Broadcasting, but all of a sudden Joe starts to kind of slant away and starts talking about, you know, Marxist things, and, you know, BLM is okay, and it’s okay to riot and do the things that they do. In fact, I’m all for that. That person’s not going to stay on air very long. They’re going to be let go. I can assure you they’re going to be let go. Just like… For example, there were other radio ownership groups in the country that when COVID hit, told their hosts, you’re going to get the vaccine and you’re going to support it or you’re not going to stay on air. And yes, that happened. And yes, they either did that or they weren’t on air. Yeah, we have one that is actually on Legends, Tron, who actually left one of those organizations because of that. So I’m not speaking untruth when I say that. In fact, there are some other radio programs here in town who I respect dearly who will tell you one of the biggest mistakes they made was going along with that and pushing a vaccine that never should have been pushed in the first place. And I feel bad for that particular individual because that should have never happened. That didn’t happen here on Crawford Broadcasting, but I’m giving you examples of where that was the agreement, and if those people wanted to keep their jobs, that’s what they did. Jimmy knew the parameters of what he was supposed to do and not do. My point is, this is not a free speech issue, like so many are making it out to be. Even our side is going down that path, and that’s not the right position here. This is not a free speech issue. This is an employer and most likely a contractor that agreed to put out a product and probably even have certain ratings along with that product, and I’ll get into that in a second. But those agreements were there. Jimmy broke that agreement. And I know there’s even some scuttlebutt out there about how the FCC got involved and we’re kind of putting some pressure on and so on. Honestly, I think that has nothing to do with why Jimmy is not on air right now. Nothing. Now, it’s going to make it look like that and the left is going to jump on that, but I’ll tell you right now, that is not the issue. In fact, here’s my take on all of this. Sometimes, and I can say this because I am one, sometimes employers… look for reasons to get rid of someone. They know they need to get rid of them. They’re trying to figure out how to do it in a nice, polite way where there’s not a lot of kickback to them. And so they look for opportunities to let someone go, to end that agreement that I just got done talking about. I get it. They could just say, you know what, you’re done. Get out of here. But all employers know that depending upon the circumstances, and by the way, the higher the profile, the individual you’ve made an agreement with, the more of this there is a concern over. Because there can be kickback. Just like a lot of talent, we call it in our industry, depending upon who the talent is, there might be some kickback. Look at all the different things that happened with Howard Stern over the years and the kickback that happened by letting him go. Companies know that those things can be there, and they don’t want that negative press, that kickback. Instead, what they do is they sort of just sit back and think, you know what, something will come along at some point and our opportunity will arise and we’ll take advantage of that. I feel like with ABC and Jimmy Kimmel, this is that opportunity. This is the opportunity. In other words, I think ABC has probably, some of the executives, has probably been thinking about, you know what, ratings aren’t that great. He’s already behind Colbert. His contract’s up at the end of the year. Charlie just told me in my ear. So, you know, you start combining all these different things. And then when something like this comes along, it sort of becomes an easy escape route, in this case for ABC. And they take it. And frankly, I don’t blame them. I don’t know the numbers because I’m not ABC and I don’t have the internal sides. I don’t know the internal sides of things like I should, but I guarantee you if Colbert’s show wasn’t making a lot of money, Kimmel’s probably wasn’t either. In fact, the majority of them are struggling to make money. Revenues are down. The talent fees are way up. It’s lopsided. So anytime that starts to happen, the network’s going to look at it and say, how do we get out of this situation that we’re not making any money on? It’s a business, folks. And this is the thing that the left, by the way, tends to forget sometimes because, frankly, they have no idea how to make money, most of them. I get it. There’s some billionaires on the left, and they do. But in general, most lefties have no idea how to make money. They hate capitalism. They have no idea how to make money. It’s not in their wheelhouse. In fact, there’s a lot of even small business owners that are extremely liberal that struggle to make money. Some do by chance, and they get really lucky. And they’re pretty sharp business people. They’re still lefties. But most lefties struggle to make money because they don’t understand how it works. So in this particular case, I don’t feel like Jimmy Kimmel is being fired necessarily for what he said, although that was the reason it’s being blamed upon. My feeling is ABC was looking for an out and he gave it to him. He’s as much to blame as anyone. He gave them that out. That’s my thought. And I just want to remind everybody, even those of you that are on the right, this is not a free speech issue at all. It’s not even remotely close to a free speech issue. What Jimmy Kimmel said was while he was on air working for ABC. They have full control over what Jimmy says because they’re writing the checks. Now, if Jimmy had been all off by himself and had said something off the cuff, you know, you might have to let that one slide if you’re ABC. But even then, he’s talent. It’s no different for me. And if I go out and post something on my own personal, which there’s no such thing, social media pages. And it’s contradictory to what we do here on Rush to Reason and Crawford Broadcasting. In other words, if I put out some Marxist propaganda, personally, Crawford Broadcasting is well within their right to say, yeah, John, this probably isn’t going to work out. You probably should go do something else. And I would get that. Even though it’s on my own time, quote unquote, I still represent them. And now, I get it. There’s a fine line between where’s your personal life, where’s your business life. And I understand that. And I do believe that people deserve to have their own personal life. What Jimmy does outside of his show is Jimmy’s business. And I’m all for that. Unless Jimmy makes it public. In other words, if Jimmy’s in a room by himself with a couple of other friends and he’s talking about things and things leak out, I’m not for that, by the way. I think that’s garbage. Those things are private. He’s talking in private, and he’s got the ability to talk in private, and I see nothing wrong with that. And I’ll give every talent person out there, Jimmy Kimmel included, that ability to do so. This isn’t that, though. This isn’t, again, a free speech issue. This is Jimmy Kimmel working for somebody saying something that at the end of the day has had a ton of kickback. Rightfully so, by the way, because he was wrong in what he said. He was lying, by the way, in what he said. And now he’s not on air anymore. So I wanted to spend some time on that because I think there’s a ton of confusion and things that are just being said wrong on both sides of the aisle, our side included. People are making this a free speech issue, and it’s not. It’s not even remotely close to being free speech. So we’ll leave it at that. Now back to Rush to Reason on KLZ 560. All right, we are back. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Texting back and forth with somebody that, by the way, is extremely arrogant, in my opinion, that basically accuses me of being an arrogant blowhard. So, you know, here’s my answer on that. Every radio has a tune knob. If you don’t like what I say and you don’t like the way I say it, you are more than welcome to turn that knob and listen to someone else. And quite frankly, you won’t hurt my feelings one bit. I have thick skin. You’re not the first person that I’ve ever heard say they didn’t like what I say. You are more than welcome to turn the knob. And listen somewhere else. It doesn’t hurt my feelings one iota. So I’ll just kind of say that in closing. And by the way, everything I just said a moment ago about Jimmy Kimmel, not Larry. He’s my Saturday person. Charlie just tried to look up and see exactly how much is the Kimmel show actually making and where are they at and so on. And best Charlie can figure is it’s probably not above water. In other words, with the time off that Jimmy takes, the fact they have to pay other people to come in and sub for him, he takes a ton of time off on an annual basis. Bottom line is that’s probably not a profitable show. that would be my take. By the way, a couple of you texting in and talking about what I said a moment ago in regards to working for someone else, selling your time to them, and so on, you’re exactly right. I mean, you guys have it dead on, and that’s exactly what happens in the employment world. I don’t know how else to say that. I wish… We did a better job of teaching our young people what I just said because they would look at their job and their careers probably differently than they do now. The way I phrase it and put it is we’re all self-employed. Whether you actually work for yourself or not, you do. In other words, technically, you may not have your own business, but you are. Because you, as a person, have agreed to sell your time to someone else in exchange for X amount in return, meaning you are, in a way, self-employed. And depending upon where you work and how effective you are at that job, may either mean promotions and you go further along or you get let go. And I understand there’s some really bad businesses and employers out there. Excluding them, in most cases, the better you perform and the more money you make the company, the more money you’ll make. It’s just natural how that works. And again, as I said a moment ago, not all employers are that way. I get that. There’s some bad employers just like there’s some bad lawyers, just like there’s some bad talk show hosts, just like there’s bad doctors, just like there’s bad everybody. I get it. Every industry has good and bad. But by and large, most companies, if you help them make more money, they’ll help you do the same. It’s just a natural cause and effect that’s there. And then if you go and do something like Jimmy Kimmel did, you’re not going to be working at all. Again, the reason I spent so much time on that last segment is I just feel like, because I’ve seen this, I feel like there’s such misconception that on both sides of the aisle when it comes to what’s really happening with Jimmy Kimmel. And most people are not explaining it in the way that I just did. They are looking at this as a free speech issue when it’s not. And I can’t tell you how many different times I’ve been on air and have talked about that very thing that when you’re working for someone else, they do have control over what you say and do for that matter. They can – for example – I had a pretty strict policy back in the day because I had auto shops, and I had guys that would wear uniforms that would have my name and theirs. I had my company name and their name because that’s the way it works in most auto shops. It’s funny that kids today will actually go out and buy shirts that way. I mean, I grew up wearing uniforms and hated it. The first thing I did as soon as work was over was take my uniform off, put regular street clothes on, and then go home because I really didn’t want to wear my technician uniform around everywhere. It’s funny. Today, that’s like a badge of honor, and they even make shirts. And clothing like that that these kids wear. Ironic how that is, but at any rate, I had a strict policy with my guys that depending upon where they were going after work, I didn’t want my uniform worn there. So, for example, I couldn’t control what they did, but let’s just say they were all going to the strip club. I didn’t want my uniform worn there. Depending upon what bar they might be hopping in at on the way home. I didn’t want my uniform worn there. So I had strict policies along those lines that I made them adhere to. And for the most part, they all did because I had really, really solid people that worked for me. But there were places I didn’t want my uniform being at. Rightfully so, by the way. And that was my option as an employer to say so. Especially in this case, I own the uniform. So, again, people tend to forget that when you have a job, there are things that go along with it, requirements, I guess you could say, that go along with it. It’s just not free reign. You can’t just do whatever you feel like doing. And, again, these are things that we do not teach well enough. We really should start in junior high. We don’t teach this at all in junior high and high school so that when kids go off even to college or the trades or whatever they do, they have a huge misconception and huge entitlement when they go to work for somebody because nobody’s ever taught them the things that I’ve just said. They have no idea that they just sold their time to someone. It’s completely backwards the way that works. And I’m guessing that a lot of you out there that are employers would firmly agree, even some of you that are employees, would firmly agree with what I’m saying and how that works as far as that employer-employee relationship is concerned. And yeah, we do not teach that well. In fact, we don’t teach it at all. We sort of – well, there’s a lot of things we don’t teach when it comes to working and so on. It’s a whole – Kelly Victory talks about it almost every single time she’s on. The whole everybody gets a prize, everybody gets a ribbon thing. That doesn’t cut it in the real world. But unfortunately, it’s how we’re raising a lot of our young people. I think that’s changing, though, by the way. I do think some of these younger generations that are coming up, that’s not like it used to be. In fact, I don’t think even some of the parents are doing that like they once did. Some of the parents are now saying, yeah, you know what? You need some tough love. You need this whole gentle parenting thing. which, by the way, hasn’t worked, it isn’t turning out so well. All right, we’ll take our last break. Roof Savers of Colorado coming up next. SPEAKER 04 :
This isn’t rage radio. This is real, relatable radio. Back to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 09 :
All right, we are back. Dave, I know we’ve got a minute or so left. Go ahead, sir.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, just real quick. You know, what people need to realize is that First Amendment free speech is only protected against the government encroaching upon you. It’s not applied to the private sector. That’s all it applies to. People need to realize that we’re woefully… uneducated when it comes to civics and government and what actually your rights are and what they entail.
SPEAKER 09 :
And furthermore, one other thing I want to add to that too, Dave, that people are getting really confused is when the FCC steps in and says something, it’s not government controlling speech. The FCC is there to make sure that our airwaves are being handled correctly. It’s their job to do that, Dave.
SPEAKER 08 :
Exactly. And, you know, to reiterate what you were saying the other day, when you were warning people on the left that, hey, you might want to be careful what you say because your company might just be looking for a reason to get rid of you. And Jimmy Kimmel didn’t realize that. He thought he let his arrogance, his ego go under his head. He thought he was more important than what he was. And he thought, I can say whatever I want without any consequence. Well, guess what? No, you can’t. And more than likely, just like Colbert, I think you guys were looking into this. How much money are they making or how much money are they losing? Ultimately, that’s the bottom line as far as ABC or any other broadcast.
SPEAKER 09 :
That’s exactly right.
SPEAKER 08 :
If John Rush isn’t making money or John Rush breaks his contract with Salem Radio, guess what? John Rush is no longer on the radio because people aren’t listening and advertisers are losing money. Nobody wants to advertise with you then.
SPEAKER 09 :
That’s right.
SPEAKER 08 :
You’re spot on. That’s the bottom line thing with Kimmel. And he didn’t realize that. He let his own ego go to his head, and he let his mouth write checks that his butt couldn’t catch.
SPEAKER 09 :
There you go. I’ll leave it at that. That’s a great closing statement, Dave. I’ll close with that, and it’s Crawford Broadcasting. I don’t work for Salem. I don’t know that I could. I should probably not say that, but that’s a whole different organization. So I won’t go down that path. I’ll leave that one alone for now. We’ll be back. Hour number three is next. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 1 :
I’m a rich guy
