In this episode of Rush to Reason, join Andy Pate as he takes the helm and leads listeners on a journey of cinematic motivation through some of film history’s most impactful speeches. Along with guests Ashley Cart and Luke Cash, Andy recalls iconic movie moments from Braveheart, Rocky, and more, discussing how each film scene fuels personal drive and ambition. Whether it’s the battle cries of William Wallace or the underdog spirit of Rocky Balboa, there’s no denying the powerful effects these stories have on our inner motivation.
SPEAKER 18 :
This is Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 04 :
You are going to shut your damn yapper and listen for a change because I got you pegged, sweetheart. You want to take the easy way out because you’re scared. And you’re scared because if you try and fail, there’s only you to blame. Let me break this down for you. Life is scary. Get used to it. There are no magical fixes.
SPEAKER 18 :
With your host, John Rush.
SPEAKER 20 :
My advice to you is to do what your parents did!
SPEAKER 22 :
Get a job, Turk! You haven’t made everybody equal. You’ve made them the same, and there’s a big difference.
SPEAKER 01 :
Let me tell you why you’re here. You’re here because you know something. What you know, you can’t explain. But you feel it. You’ve felt it your entire life. That there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there. It is this feeling that has brought you to me.
SPEAKER 17 :
Are you crazy? Am I? Or am I so sane that you just blew your mind?
SPEAKER 29 :
It’s Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush. Presented by Cub Creek Heating and Air Conditioning.
SPEAKER 23 :
Filling in is Andy Pate, party of choice.
SPEAKER 08 :
Are you motivated? Luke, are you motivated? This is the most motivated I’ve ever been in my life. Exactly. Ashley, are you motivated?
SPEAKER 28 :
I feel like I need to go run up and down some stairs right now.
SPEAKER 08 :
You go do that and we’ll keep your seat warm.
SPEAKER 28 :
We have 12 flights of them here in the office.
SPEAKER 08 :
There you go. Welcome to hour number two here on Rush to Reason. I’m Andy Pate filling in for John Rush. Joined once again by Ashley Cart. Her. And Luke Cash. Man. That’s right. Man and her and me. Whatever I am. What am I? I’m not sure. Okay. Pretty sure I’m a guy. How progressive of you. How progressive of me. Exactly. Okay. Motivational movies. There are so many and they are so good. I’m going to start with the most obvious one. By the way, at the end of these, if you can, say how it motivates you. Sound good? We’ll try. We’ll try. Luke is like, oh man, I’ve never been motivated. What do I do? I know. Okay. Here we go. The first one, obviously the speech from Braveheart.
SPEAKER 20 :
What will you do without freedom? Will you fight? Against that? No. We will run. And we will live. Aye. Fight and you may die. Run and you’ll live. At least a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives? But they’ll never take our freedom!
SPEAKER 06 :
I want to go fight in a battle now.
SPEAKER 08 :
I mean, I’m telling you about that. That was such wonderful. I was very motivated. There’s nothing that can’t be achieved by a motivated group of men in skirts wearing blue makeup. What do you think?
SPEAKER 06 :
I think that’s very right.
SPEAKER 08 :
I mean, I would simply be frightened by any group of men in skirts wearing blue makeup. I would go the other way.
SPEAKER 06 :
You know, motivate me however you would like. If you do it with a Scottish accent, I’ll be that much more motivated. Even if it’s Mel Gibson’s kind of rough Scottish accent. The attempt is what motivates me.
SPEAKER 08 :
What would scare you more? Downtown, a gang of trendy Aragua, or a gang of Scottish men in skirts wearing blue makeup?
SPEAKER 06 :
The Scottish men in skirts.
SPEAKER 08 :
That’s just a little weirder, isn’t it?
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, well, they got nothing to lose.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, absolutely. They’re ready to storm the battlefield. Okay, Luke, you’re up.
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, Andy, it’s not about how hard you can hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and get back up. Rocky, man, we’ve got to get a little Rocky in here. The Steps, you know, they made how many movies of Rocky? Like 150 million or something like that? I don’t know. Too many Rocky movies. But they’re all motivating in their own way.
SPEAKER 08 :
Since you mentioned that, here we go.
SPEAKER 21 :
Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place, and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward, how much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done. Now, if you know what you’re worth, now go out and get what you’re worth. But you’ve got to be willing to take the hits and not point and finger saying you ain’t where you want to be because of him or her or anybody. Cowards do that, and that ain’t you. You’re better than that.
SPEAKER 06 :
Ah, so good.
SPEAKER 08 :
Isn’t that so good? You know, if I’m his son right there, okay, so to be clear, I have to get hit?
SPEAKER 06 :
yeah just really yes uh i think one of the motivating things about that movie too is how motivating it is to hear the story behind that movie being made and the fact that sylvester stallone was living out of his car while trying to secure funding to make this movie and if this movie didn’t work he was that was it that was going to be the end yeah i mean well that was the original rocky yeah the original rocky that’s what i’m saying he you know the uh the amount of time and effort from Sylvester Stallone into making Rocky is motivating in and of itself.
SPEAKER 28 :
Did you ever hear about this behind-the-scenes thing? This apparently just came up in my circle, where it’s the Rocky poster was misprinted by accident, but they didn’t have the money to reprint it, so they just put it in the script of, hey, I’m wearing red shorts, not… white yeah exactly i i did see that one they didn’t have enough money to fix it so they had to improvise uh and it ended up working very well yeah it works it’s a good movie well uh very impressive i loved it i think it’s a fantastic scene and ashley you’re up all right uh so i’m gonna choose one that i guess is less motivating to me now but when i was going to school to potentially be a teacher this was one of my biggest motivating movies and it’s freedom riders with hillary swank
SPEAKER 06 :
I don’t know that one.
SPEAKER 28 :
You don’t know that one. So it’s about an actual… I don’t know that one. It’s based on a true story. It’s a real teacher who went into an underfunded inner city school. She had this class of freshmen, I think. It was a class of freshmen… that just didn’t want to learn you know they were affiliated with gangs they were dealing with you know all this awful stuff around them and so they just they did not care about her they did not care about her class and she managed to find a way to meet the students where they were find the students um interest look at the students as people and not just troublemakers and she ended up following them throughout throughout their high school career um getting them into college and changing these students lives for the better and she actually published i think a bunch of different curriculums to try to help other teachers do the same Well, that’s very cool. Very nice. So it was actually, it’s a really cool story.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay, well, you know what? I’m not going to do a clip here because you gave me another idea. I’m going to go to a different kind of movie. Because you said Hilary Swank. I’m going to go to Ordinary Angels. Did you see that one? I have not. Okay. In this one, she plays a lady who, I’ll just say this, she’s a party girl and is… Always kind of let her mouth get in the way and has not led the purest life. Okay? But she finds out that there’s a guy who is down on his luck, losing all his money. He’s played by Ellen Richson, you know, the huge guy from Reacher. Yeah. And his daughter is dying. And somehow she needs to get a transplant, I believe it is, or at least some sort of surgery. I think it was a transplant. And anyway, there is nobody who can help. And it is a desperation mode. And so Hilary Spank plays this lady named Sharon. And her entire goal, she puts her entire life into getting the help to this girl. and she will do anything it takes, and it changes her life. And so Ordinary Angels is a very inspirational movie. I know a lot of people saw it and were very inspired, but you guys have never seen it? No.
SPEAKER 28 :
No. I’m going to have to watch it.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. Remember, that was actually in my top 10 movies from 2024. Oh, yeah. Oh, no, no. Okay.
SPEAKER 06 :
All right. Luke, you’re up. Well, that was really sweet. That was really sweet. Thank you. I want to know what else is very sweet and very charming. Oh, yes. Shooting at communists. Yes! In Red Dawn. If you want to get motivated, there’s nothing more motivating than guerrilla tactics against an occupying communist force.
SPEAKER 08 :
You know what? I agree. It gives me this warm feeling. It does. In my heart. Just watching the commies get shredded by the bullets.
SPEAKER 06 :
That’s what I’m saying.
SPEAKER 08 :
I agree.
SPEAKER 06 :
Warm and fluttering.
SPEAKER 08 :
You know, and the funny thing is, there’s only one of us here who’s currently… Able to do that.
SPEAKER 28 :
Potentially.
SPEAKER 08 :
I mean, potentially. Well, you’re in the military. I mean, have you ever asked them, please, even though we’re not at war with anyone, can you airdrop me behind some lines where I can shoot up some commies? I mean, okay, so I will say that… I mean, when you’re commanding off your CO, would he be okay with that?
SPEAKER 28 :
Probably not, but I will say that our targets that we shoot at for target practice are called Ivans.
SPEAKER 08 :
Nice.
SPEAKER 28 :
So it does kind of feel like I’m shooting up some communists. Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay, okay, okay. Well, tell you what. We’ll take it. Along that theme, let’s go with one of the greatest motivational speeches ever given, and that is Bluto from Animal House. Here we go.
SPEAKER 17 :
War’s over, man. Wormer dropped the big one.
SPEAKER 1 :
What?
SPEAKER 22 :
Over? Did you say over? Nothing is over until we decide it is. Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
SPEAKER 10 :
Dermot? Forget it, he’s rolling.
SPEAKER 22 :
And it ain’t over now! Because when the going gets tough!
SPEAKER 19 :
The tough get going!
SPEAKER 22 :
Who’s with me? Let’s go! Come on!
SPEAKER 08 :
He runs out the door. John Belushi in Animal House. One of the great performances I’ve ever seen. He was incredible as Bluto. Beautiful. Did you ever see it? It was beautiful, and I was touched. There was a tear right there in the corner of my eye, right there. It was just amazing. Yes. What do you think? I think it’s good.
SPEAKER 06 :
I think that is very motivating.
SPEAKER 08 :
Were you inspired? I mean, would you bomb, you know, would you go after the Germans?
SPEAKER 06 :
Would I bomb Pearl Harbor?
SPEAKER 08 :
No, no, no, sorry. Well, actually, you might drop bombs. I mean, you’re very militant. But, Ashley, would you go after the Germans for bombing Pearl Harbor? Yes, I would. Okay, I thought you would.
SPEAKER 06 :
Okay, Luke, you’re up. Well, it was me, and then we skipped Ashley so you could play your thing. So I think Ashley owes us one.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, we skipped Ashley?
SPEAKER 28 :
I think we did, yeah. I thought we didn’t.
SPEAKER 06 :
No. I thought you did one. You did your touching one and then I shot at commies.
SPEAKER 28 :
You mentioned Red Dawn and then I said that I essentially shoot at commies.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, okay. You get to do two then.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay, go ahead, Luke.
SPEAKER 06 :
All right. Let’s go with fighting, maybe not fighting commies directly, but kind of in a different way, like spiritually fighting commies and then also fighting them on the hockey rink.
SPEAKER 08 :
Spiritually fighting commies.
SPEAKER 06 :
I was waiting for you to get to a point with this. I’m sorry. Miracle. Yes! We’re fighting commies in spirit and on the rink. I just don’t like commies very much.
SPEAKER 08 :
How many commies did we actually take out in Miracle? I was wondering. You know, not enough. Not enough. Okay, I do have a bit of the speech. Here we go.
SPEAKER 17 :
One game. If we played them ten times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can. Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players. Every one of you. And you were meant to be here tonight.
SPEAKER 08 :
It goes on. It’s just such a wonderful speech. It is one of the best Hollywood speeches I’ve ever heard.
SPEAKER 28 :
I need someone to just give that speech to the U.S. Olympic hockey team before they play this year.
SPEAKER 08 :
They need it.
SPEAKER 28 :
They need it.
SPEAKER 08 :
I think that would be very good. Okay, Ashley, guess what? You’re up twice. Go.
SPEAKER 28 :
All right, I’m keeping with the military theme with these, with Men of Honor and Hacksaw Ridge.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, nicely done. Nicely done. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER 28 :
Uh, Hacksaw Ridge in particular makes me feel like I could definitely, uh, storm a Japanese beach. Yes. And then men of honor just makes me think that I could accomplish anything that I want to in the military.
SPEAKER 08 :
Does it? It really does. Yeah. I think it’s very impressive. Very impressive. You know, who else is impressive? John from Cheyenne. John, do you have, how are you doing today? I’m doing well, sir. Are you feeling motivated? It’s a new year, a new you. It is.
SPEAKER 09 :
So let’s get motivated for the new year. Okay. First, I have a question. Yeah. When Luke said Red Dawn, he meant the original and not that terrible remake. Oh, I hope so.
SPEAKER 06 :
I mean, both of them were shooting commies. So, I mean, the remake might be terrible, but it’s more dead commies. So we’ll take it.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. Luke is not very discriminating when it comes to shooting commies. He’s pretty open to it. Okay.
SPEAKER 09 :
Okay. That remake was terrible. being an old guy like you andy that remake was terrible i did like the first one better but luke has a point dead commies dead commies come on man yes so how about i don’t know andy i think you’ve seen this movie battleground 1949 cast of characters about the 101st at Bastogne. No. I’ve not seen this. No. Okay. It’s got James Whitmore, Van Johnson, Ricardo Montalban, and the cat. Really good cast. Definitely worth a watch. I’m going to ruin it for you, but it’s 1949, so I’m allowed. Right before dawn, they show all these guys dug in. They’re just about out of ammo. Fixing bayonets. Oh. And all of a sudden, James Whitmore, who’s the platoon sergeant, is walking along, and he sees his shadow for the first time in three weeks. Because if you remember the Battle of the Bulge, they couldn’t get any air support because it was raining and snowing. And it’s a great movie.
SPEAKER 08 :
That sounds— That sounds intense. It really does.
SPEAKER 09 :
It’s one of those ones that is usually on TMC all the time, and if it’s on, I’m watching it. It’s just that good. And then let’s go to the 80s, Andy. How about Vision Quest? Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
I didn’t think of that one. Nicely done, sir. Does that motivate you? How about that?
SPEAKER 09 :
Oh, gosh. To just say, I am going to do this, no matter what it takes, and he does it should motivate everybody.
SPEAKER 08 :
When I think 80s, I’m motivated by Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Is that the same?
SPEAKER 09 :
In a different way. In a different way. No, I’m kidding. And the other one is one of my favorite westerns goes back. The original Magnificent Seven. Oh, yeah. When they’re outnumbered and Steve McQueen looks at Eli Wallach and just says, we deal in lead, friend. That was like the coolest line in that whole movie. It was so cool.
SPEAKER 08 :
By the way, Yule was cool too.
SPEAKER 09 :
Andy, quick question. I got to ask you about one of your reviews. I didn’t hear it. Did you review Song Sung Blues?
SPEAKER 08 :
I did not. There were so many. And this was really, I had to pick one movie over the holidays that I couldn’t see because there were so many. I was doing three a week. And so I picked Song Sung Blue because it wasn’t getting very good reviews. And so I decided to skip that one. Did you see it?
SPEAKER 09 :
No. Yeah, my wife and I went to see it the Friday after Christmas. Oh, what’d you think? And it was good. It was good. It had some sad parts in it, but all in all, three out of five. Oh, well, that’s pretty cool. Maybe three and a half. That’ll work. You know, when it comes out on video, because I never knew… Kate Hudson sang as well as she did, as she does. Actually, she is a good singer. That I knew. Yeah, I never heard her sing before that, and she was really good. And then, of course, we know Hugh Jackman can sing. Well, he’s a great singer.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 09 :
I would say three and a half out of five. All right. Worked. Worth a watch. I don’t know if you want to do a late review on it or when it comes out on video.
SPEAKER 08 :
I don’t know. Maybe I will, but I’ve got to be honest. I’ve got so many coming up, so we may just go with yours, sir.
SPEAKER 09 :
You just reviewed it. My wife gave it a four. She liked it more than I did. Okay. Fair enough.
SPEAKER 08 :
All right, sir. We better let you go. All right. We got to take a break because we got to come back with more motivational movies.
SPEAKER 28 :
Are you guys already feeling motivated? I’m feeling pretty motivated. I’m feeling really motivated.
SPEAKER 08 :
I want you to know we’re only 24 minutes into this hour and I’m thinner. It’s incredible.
SPEAKER 06 :
That’s impressive. You do actually have for real in front of you a bowl of vegetables.

SPEAKER 08 :
And welcome back to Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560, Andy Pate filling in for John Rush, along with Luke Cash and Ashley Card. Okay. You know, a movie that always inspires me is a movie that is full of athletes in the greatest game ever done, dodgeball. Yes, I got to play these clips from the announcers from dodgeball. Here we go.
SPEAKER 10 :
time is out it looks like the clock is about to strike midnight on this cinderella story turning average joe’s into the proverbial pumpkin i sure do like pumpkins cotton average joe’s wins in a shocking upset i feel shocked what do you think beth cotton hey i spoke with white goodman before today’s match and he told me that his team really wants to win this one
SPEAKER 03 :
Yes, no, I’m being told that average Joes does not have enough players and will be forfeiting the championship match.
SPEAKER 11 :
It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off for him. Looks like Peter LeFleur has actually blindfolded himself. Yeah, he will not be able to see very well, Cotton.
SPEAKER 08 :
That’s Jason Bateman. He was so hilarious in that movie.
SPEAKER 06 :
It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off. It’s one of the most iconic quotes. I use it very regularly. It’s so good.
SPEAKER 08 :
They’re going to have to forfeit. It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off for them.
SPEAKER 06 :
Very good.
SPEAKER 08 :
Anyway, I found it very inspiring, that movie.
SPEAKER 06 :
As you should. As you should.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. I often now blindfold myself and let people throw things at me. I’m just confident.
SPEAKER 28 :
Corey was telling me about that.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. Yeah. I come out of it confident. I can take anything. Luke, you’re up.
SPEAKER 06 :
I thought the bruises were just because she hit you regularly.
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, it’s not just her. The neighbors, you don’t want to get in on.
SPEAKER 06 :
Wallop on you.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, they throw things too. Fair enough. Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER 06 :
Okay, you’re up. Something that inspires me very greatly is Matt Damon. But more than Matt Damon is the indomitable human spirit and Matt Damon in The Martian.
SPEAKER 28 :
Oh, that’s a very good one. I love The Martian.
SPEAKER 06 :
It’s a great movie.
SPEAKER 08 :
Great acting. A little slow.
SPEAKER 06 :
A little slow. The author of the original book that the movie’s based off of, Andy Weir, is, like, the greatest sci-fi author of our time. And just, like, the time and effort and intelligence and, like, ingenuity and, like, surviving in that environment. Like, real science applied to it. It’s like… Very creative.
SPEAKER 08 :
Then you have all the tall blue people killing you.
SPEAKER 06 :
And then you have all the tall blue people killing you. Oh, my gosh.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, I wasn’t ready for that part of it.
SPEAKER 06 :
The next inspiring movie from the same author, Project Hail Mary, which is coming to theaters soon. I hope it’s good because, man, I’m looking forward to it.
SPEAKER 08 :
I sure hope so. I sure hope so. Okay, Ashley, you’re up.
SPEAKER 28 :
So this one inspires me to go back to school. It’s The Theory of Everything. The story of Stephen Hawking. And honestly, it just makes me want to go back to Cambridge. I spent a month studying over there, and I want to go back. So bad.
SPEAKER 08 :
I think Hawking was just showing off.
SPEAKER 06 :
Thinking he’s so smart. Yeah, what are you in that wheelchair for, buddy? What, are you trying to get one over on me? What, you think you’re better than me?
SPEAKER 1 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
Just because you’ve got an IQ, which is basically the combined total of Colorado.
SPEAKER 28 :
So what? I mean, Colorado’s so blue, I don’t think that’s exactly an accomplishment.
SPEAKER 08 :
No, well, I set a low bar. You know, he’s only one guy. I mean, you know, and I’m in Colorado.
SPEAKER 06 :
That lowers it even more. Colorado’s trying its best. To get dumber.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay, here we go. Yeah. This, getting serious now, this is a movie that is a beautiful movie, wonderful movie. And by the way, it came out, I believe, a week or two after Driving Miss Daisy or before. It was right around Driving Miss Daisy. And you’re thinking, why are you reminding us of this? Because it had the same, one of the same lead actors, Morgan Freeman, who is one of my favorite actors. And here he is talking down to Denzel Washington in Glory.
SPEAKER 13 :
What are you? So full of hatred, just want to go out and fight everybody. Because you’ve been whipped and chased by hounds. Well, that might not be living, but it sure as hell ain’t dying. And dying’s what these white boys been doing for going on three years now. Dying by the thousands. Dying for you, fool. I know, because I dug the graves. And all the time I’m digging, I’m asking myself, when, when, oh Lord, is going to be our time? Well, time’s coming when we’re going to have to ante up. Ante up and kick in like men. Like men!
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, my gosh. There aren’t many guys who can do a speech like him. I’m sorry. There just aren’t. Morgan Freeman is up there. Yeah. And Denzel, he played this young, hot, angry, racist, intense, bitter guy. He was so good. He was so good. And so many of the actors were so good in Gloria. Either of you ever see it? No. Civil War movie of the one black regiment. And it was. But they were led by Matthew Broderick. And it was just very good. Very good.
SPEAKER 06 :
Okay, Luke, you’re up. Well, let’s keep this Morgan Freeman train going with the Shawshank Redemption.
SPEAKER 08 :
Woohoo!
SPEAKER 06 :
That motivates me. A little escape action? A little freedom? I know you act that way.
SPEAKER 28 :
Does it motivate you to get arrested just to escape prison?
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, yeah. No, it motivates him. I’ve noticed at the end of every work day, he just wants to run out of here.
SPEAKER 06 :
I’ve been slow.
SPEAKER 08 :
And sometimes he crawls.
SPEAKER 28 :
I’ve noticed him tunneling out of his office.
SPEAKER 06 :
I was going to say, I’ve been tunneling through the wall. Well, unfortunately, it just leads to the next studio. But, you know, eventually we’ll work our way through enough to get out of here.
SPEAKER 08 :
Luke, folks, Luke isn’t the brightest guy, okay? Not many people would try to tunnel out on the 12th floor. Okay, just so you know, but Luke does that.
SPEAKER 06 :
I might not be the brightest, but I am the most resilient and the most motivated. And that is the topic of the day.
SPEAKER 08 :
Shawshank was awesome.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 08 :
It really was.
SPEAKER 06 :
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it, but I can replay that movie almost frame for frame in my head.
SPEAKER 08 :
And by the way, Tim Robbins. Love him. Yes. The guy is a terrific actor. Terrific actor.
SPEAKER 28 :
Okay. Ashley, you’re up. All right. This one might be a little bit of a deep cut depending on what kind of movies you watch, but it’s a movie called Fireproof. It is produced by Sherwood Pictures. It’s a Christian production company. And that one I watched with my family as a kid, and I rewatched it as an adult because it motivates me to be better in my marriage. Oh, very nice. It doesn’t really. It does. It does. You know, the whole thing is, you know, learning how to be really the main character is learning how to be a good husband. But then we later find out that the same methods were used by his mom to learn how to become a better wife. And it’s like, you know what? It motivates me to stay godly in my marriage and be better in my marriage.
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, that is beautiful. That’s really beautiful. I’m never going to watch it. But I mean, you know, that sounds really good. I’m kidding. I’ve actually seen Fireproof. I like it.
SPEAKER 06 :
That is a deep cut. I totally didn’t recognize the movie you were talking about until I looked up. Oh, yeah, I did see this at some point. I don’t remember when, but I remember.
SPEAKER 08 :
While we’re becoming better people, how about a movie that tells you how to become better newscasters in Anchorman? Here we go.
SPEAKER 28 :
I’m going to start keeping a tally of how many times Andy mentions Anchorman.
SPEAKER 08 :
I always have to. This is so wrong. So, guys and folks, please, a little content here, but just please bear with me.
SPEAKER 15 :
Rick, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safe house or a relative close by.
SPEAKER 08 :
Just a second. I got to start it a little sooner. The thing jumped ahead. And here we go.
SPEAKER 16 :
That escalated quickly. I mean, that really got out of hand fast. It jumped up a notch. It did, didn’t it?
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, I stabbed a man in the heart. I saw that. Brick killed a guy. Did you throw a trident? Yeah, there were horses and a man on fire, and I killed a guy with a trident.
SPEAKER 15 :
Brick, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safe house or a relative close by. Lay low for a while, because you’re probably wanted for murder. I’m proud of you, fellas.
SPEAKER 16 :
You all kept your head on a swivel, and that’s what you gotta do when you find yourself in a vicious cockfight. Can you believe Mantooth and the whole Channel 9 evening news team? I mean, where’s your mommy? Someone’s gotta change your diapers. I’m telling you, this Corningstone business is really hurting our rep. I know exactly what you mean, Brian. Every newsman in this city’s laughing at us. And I don’t like it. I don’t like the put-downs. We’re going to do something about it. It is time to put an end to this. Because last time I looked in the dictionary, my name’s Ron Burgundy. What’s your name? Brian Fantana. Champ kind. Brian Fantana. No, you’re Brick. I’m Brian.
SPEAKER 08 :
I’m sorry. Last time I looked in the dictionary, my name is… Okay, I know it’s a stupid movie. I don’t care. I love Anchorman. What do you think, Luke? I think it’s funny. I mean, didn’t you hear the motivation in their hearts? They were going to go out and do something.
SPEAKER 06 :
They were going to do something big.
SPEAKER 08 :
Brick is such an idiot. Steve Carell plays Brick, and he’s just hilarious. Luke, you’re up.
SPEAKER 06 :
Can you follow that?
SPEAKER 08 :
Can you come up with something more motivational? I’ll try my best.
SPEAKER 06 :
I think it’s about halfway between. It’s also kind of funny, also kind of motivating. Also, genuinely incredible performance from Shia LaBeouf in Peanut Butter Falcon. Yes. That movie is so good.
SPEAKER 08 :
So I got you to see that.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yes, I’ve seen it, and I adore it dearly. It is absolutely incredible.
SPEAKER 08 :
I gave that best picture.
SPEAKER 06 :
You did?
SPEAKER 08 :
Like three years ago, and not many people have seen it. I don’t know why. Is it wonderful?
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah. Again, Shia LaBeouf is incredible. The story is very endearing, very funny, definitely worth your time. I barely hear anyone talk about it.
SPEAKER 08 :
Do you love the scene where he’s swimming and pulling the guy across to keep him out of the way of the boat, and the guy has no idea what he’s doing for him? Yes. Oh, folks, if you have not seen Peanut Butter Falcon, please do yourself a favor. Rent it. You will like it. I have yet to hear a single person not love Peanut Butter Falcon. Very good.
SPEAKER 28 :
Okay. Ashley, you’re up. All right. I will say very, for me, very motivating movie for the year 2028 is Hillbilly Elegy. Oh, okay. Because it motivates me to vote for J.D. Vance for president.
SPEAKER 08 :
J.D. Vance! I like J.D. Vance. I’m a J.D. guy. I actually really like J.D. Vance. And look, virtually everybody’s saying it’s going to be Vance Rubio. Rubio has already come out and said, I’m not going to run against him because basically he wants me on the ticket. So what a twosome. Looks like a good ticket. I think it sounds like a lot of fun. Hillbilly Elegy. Well done. Okay, let’s take a break. We’ll come back. I got some more. I got some more motivational stuff. Not as motivational as dodgeball. I don’t think I can top that, but I think I can do all right. What do you think, Luke?
SPEAKER 06 :
We’ll give it a good shot.
SPEAKER 08 :
You were a big drop-off from Dodgeball when you did Shawshank. It’s not nearly as motivational.
SPEAKER 06 :
I know, but I think maybe with 150 more motivational movies, I’ll be able to reach a fraction of what Dodgeball has to offer.
SPEAKER 08 :
I believe in you, man. I do. Thank you. Okay, up next is Flesh Law. Unlike lawyers whose skills are rusty, and boy, a lot of them are, by the way. People don’t know this. A lot of lawyers don’t spend much time in the courtroom. They don’t. They get to where they’re just shuffling paperwork. But Kevin Flesch, he stays sharp with lots of time in the courtroom. So call Flesch Law, that’s F-L-E-S-C-H, at 303-806-8886.
SPEAKER 05 :
Here’s why you need personal injury attorney Kevin Flesch on your side. He understands the way the jury thinks. In the context of a personal injury case, you’ve been hurt by someone else’s negligence. The idea is that you’re going to try to recover so that you can get back to where you were just prior to that incident occurring. What that really means from a jurist’s perspective is that you’re going to be asking them to award you money. So when we talk about fairness, we’re talking about six people that you don’t know. Those six people view the evidence and make a unanimous decision that will decide what the fair value is. When you’re the one who’s hurt, you have a good idea of what you think it’s worth. The question is, can you persuade those other individuals whom you don’t know and were witnesses to believe that’s what the case is worth? Kevin Flesch understands the way the jury thinks. Call now for a free consultation, 303-806-8886.
SPEAKER 07 :
TJ here with KLZ Radio, and I’ve got Al Smith from Golden Eagle Financial with us once again. Al, we are coming into a new year here now, and we’ve talked recently about getting a fresh look at our retirement accounts. So tell me what that means a little bit. What kind of stuff do you want folks to look at?
SPEAKER 26 :
Well, a fresh look is not only looking at the past and seeing how you’re doing, but putting together what you would like it to look like in the future. Not just growth, but are things on track? Some other maybe non-financial things. Are there some other things that you have concerns about as you get closer to retirement?
SPEAKER 07 :
Very cool. And what do you do for folks when they come in? And let’s say it’s a potential client that you’ve never seen before. Where do you start looking with a new account like that?
SPEAKER 26 :
Well, I have a pretty lengthy conversation where we dive into a timeline when they might like to retire and a few income things so we could get a handle on the amount of money they’re going to need to retire. What does that look like for you? Are you going to be traveling a lot? Are you going to be skiing? Are you going to be spending a lot of time at home? Because some people’s idea of retirement means they’re going to need $10,000, $12,000 a month. Other people, $4,000 or $5,000 is going to be very adequate depending on what kind of things they do in retirement.
SPEAKER 07 :
That’s pretty great. Al Smith goes through a lot more than just numbers, folks. He’s about people and really wants to find out exactly what you want to do with your retirement. Al, how do people get in touch with you if they want to start that process?
SPEAKER 26 :
Well, you can reach me at the office, 303-744-1128. My cell is 303-875-4572. I reply to texts and And if you’d like to hear about taxes as you get closer to retirement, there’s an event coming up January 10th at Arapahoe Community College.
SPEAKER 07 :
You got it, Al. And as always, you can reach Al from the klzradio.com website. Just go to klzradio.com slash money. Al, thanks so much for joining us today.
SPEAKER 26 :
Well, you’re welcome. Thanks for having me, TJ.
SPEAKER 18 :
Live and local, back to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 08 :
And welcome back to Rush Reason. Denver’s Afternoon Rush. KLZ 560. Andy Pate filling in for John Rush. Along with Ashley Cart. Her. And Luke Cash.
SPEAKER 01 :
Man.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay. We’re going to do a little rapid fire here. And I’m going to do a lot of different ones that you may not have heard. But I’m going to change from what I was going to do. Because Luke. You mentioned one Mr. Shia LaBeouf. I did. Have you ever seen The Greatest Game Ever Played? No, I have not. It’s really good. John loves it. It’s a golfing movie. A little slow, I’ll be honest, a little slow, and it’s about this really poor kid back in the days when poor kids couldn’t golf. And he gets a chance to go after the world championship. And it’s really good. So the greatest game ever played. It’s worth watching.
SPEAKER 01 :
Trust me.
SPEAKER 08 :
Worth renting, folks. It’s a feel-good movie. Very inspirational. Luke, you’re up.
SPEAKER 06 :
Let’s go with some sports movies. Sports movies are very motivational. We will start with The Blind Side.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 28 :
I don’t care what Michael Orr says about, like, the truth around the movie. The movie is good.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, I mean, the movie’s good. I remember enjoying it. I know there’s some controversy around, you know, some of the how it came to be.
SPEAKER 08 :
I think people need to chill on that. And for Michael Orr, wherever he is, you know, hey, man, you had a great run. You know, but all movies take liberties. That’s the way it is. I mean, you have to because you’re making entertainment. Does that make sense? Yeah. Yeah. You know, nothing against him. He seems like a great guy, but apparently he’s very upset. Okay, Ashley, you’re up.
SPEAKER 28 :
All right. This one’s going to be a big motivator for me. It’s Ocean’s Eleven. It motivates me to go to Vegas and rob a casino.
SPEAKER 08 :
All right. All right, you know, and you need that because ordinarily you can’t get up for doing that because you’re breaking the law.
SPEAKER 28 :
Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, and so you need motivation to do it. You need a little help, a little kick in the pants, right?
SPEAKER 28 :
Yeah, it gives me just the right amount of motivation to go, you know what, I’m going to go rob a casino.
SPEAKER 08 :
That’s why I watch The Italian Job. It really helps me do that. But that’s not the movie I’m going to say. I’m going to say a movie that you guys have not seen, which was one of my very pleasant surprises last year called The Lost King. And it stars a wonderful performance from an actress named Sally Hawkins. And it’s about her trying to find the lost tomb of King Richard. And yeah, I know that doesn’t sound exciting, folks. It doesn’t. I’m telling you what, it is really well acted, very touching, very moving. And boy, does she have to go to the ends of herself to be able to do this and basically give up everything. And it’s really well done. The Lost King. One last thing, too. Reviewers across the board gave it great reviews. Okay. For what it’s worth. Luke, you’re up.
SPEAKER 06 :
Let’s get a little Disney Pixar. This one taught me how to drift cars. Yes! I don’t know. There’s something kind of just naturally inspiring about that Americana style, Route 66, drive fast. I don’t know. It scratches a really particular itch for me.
SPEAKER 28 :
You heard turn right to go left, and you took that to heart.
SPEAKER 06 :
I did. I did.
SPEAKER 08 :
You know what, guys? I’m going to be honest. I found cars very motivational. I’m not kidding. No jokes here. I think it’s a good story. In two ways. First of all, I did like the racing strategy and what he was doing. But also… The idea of honoring your roots, honoring these small towns that have been left behind and looking into them and understanding there’s a whole history there. That’s fantastic. And we shouldn’t forget that. We should keep it and honor it.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, and also, you know, the whole story about respect in there. You know, Lightning McQueen, you know, the car, is some hotshot newbie, and he thinks he’s all that, and then it’s like, you know, through this experience, it’s like, you know, it’s respect, it’s humility, it’s, you know, come to the end of the movie, it’s not about winning, it’s about doing the right thing. Yeah. That’s very nice.
SPEAKER 08 :
I think it’s very motivational. And by the way, it’s one of the last great Pixar’s that came out. Very good movie. They started going down. Yeah. Not right away after that, but shortly after that. Okay. Very shortly after that. Ashley, you’re up. Go.
SPEAKER 28 :
All right. I am going to go with another sports movie. This one’s Disney. I really liked it as a kid. Glory Road. It’s a basketball movie.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yes. I actually saw that. And it was good. It was really good. I like that movie. Okay. Then I got to do another basketball movie. I got to go with Hoosiers. Gene Hackman, you ever see it? No, I have not. Luke, you’ve got to see Hoosiers. It was up for best. No, I’m serious. It was up for best picture. Okay. It was so good. And the acting was amazing. So there you go. Hoosiers.
SPEAKER 06 :
Luke, go. All right. Well, we’re not shooting hoops, but we’re shooting guns in Black Hawk Down. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
No man left behind. No man left behind. Boy, what they go through, too, right?
SPEAKER 06 :
Very motivating in kind of a dark way. But, you know, motivation is motivation.
SPEAKER 28 :
But very well done. Okay, Ashley, go. All right. Like, true, honest, makes me cry every time I watch it. Motivational movie is Facing the Giants. oh yeah yeah good one good one i’ve thought of that one i re-watch the scene of the football player walking across the whole field at least once every two months cry and then feel motivated to actually keep going very cool okay then i gotta do a football one here we go rudy rudy rudy rudy another one that’s very controversial but such a good movie
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, yeah, I don’t care how real it was. It was a great movie, folks. Lighten up. It was great. And the music, oh, my gosh. It’s incredible. I love the music. Wonderful story. I love the movie Rudy. And, you know, it’s also Sam from Lord of the Rings.
SPEAKER 28 :
I was going to say, that’s Samwise Gamgee.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, you know, and when Rudy rescued, you know, the hobbits, I think it was fantastic. Okay, Luke, you’re up. Go.
SPEAKER 06 :
Andy, do you want to build a rocket? I do. Well, let’s go watch October Sky.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yes!
SPEAKER 06 :
That’s on my list.
SPEAKER 08 :
October Sky, folks, if you have not watched October Sky, why are you cheating yourself?
SPEAKER 06 :
I watched that one for the first time in a physics class in high school, and I was very shocked. You know, your physics professor says, hey, let’s go watch a movie. And I’m like, oh, boy, what’s this going to be? Oh, this is really good, actually. It’s so good.
SPEAKER 08 :
It is so good. How’s the acting?
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, I think it’s pretty impressive, yes.
SPEAKER 08 :
It is really good. Okay, Ashley, go.
SPEAKER 28 :
All right, I have mentioned my English degree once before, so that leads to this one, the Dead Poets Society. Oh, fantastic.
SPEAKER 08 :
And I am inspired. His teaching style and the way he brought it out in them, amazing, wasn’t it?
SPEAKER 28 :
It was absolutely amazing. And, you know, beyond that, with the English majors, it inspired us to name a club that we created when we would have our English major parties called the Drunk Poets Society.
SPEAKER 08 :
Which isn’t far off the case because they got a little wild in the Dead Poets Society. I mean, it was very cool. That is a wonderful movie. Tell you what, let’s come back and go rapid fire. You guys ready? We’re going to go rapid fire. I got so many motivational movies and they are good. Up next is Michael Bailey Law. In fact, Hunter talks often about how the industry has shifted towards sales instead of comfort and how Cub Creek refuses to operate that way. Hunter and the ream certified pro partner technicians at Cub Creek are true craftsmen. They take pride in their work. They operate with integrity and they’re always on your side. Are you ready? I’m ready. Let’s go for it. Okay, here’s one that motivated me. The Green Book. Have you seen that? Never even heard of it. Guys, I gave it Best Movie a few years back. It is a black, gay, jazz pianist, no, classical pianist, and a racist white guy driving him across the South. It is funny, it is outstanding, it is worth seeing, and it will inspire you. The Green Book. Go, Luke!
SPEAKER 06 :
All right, let’s go with 12 Years a Slave.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, yeah. Well done, sir. Ashley, go. Let’s go with The King’s Speech. Oh, excellent, excellent. I’m going to go with I Can Only Imagine. A Christian movie? They went through a lot. Okay, go, Luke. Let’s keep a music ball rolling with whiplash. Yeah! Not as pure. Not as pure. No, no, but really well done. Ashley, go.
SPEAKER 28 :
Near and dear to Coloradans’ hearts is Temple Grandin.
SPEAKER 08 :
I don’t know it.
SPEAKER 28 :
It’s a movie about an autistic woman who just blows up, just completely reinvents the cattle industry in Fort Collins and slaughterhouses and all that stuff. She’s a tenured professor at CSU.
SPEAKER 08 :
Way cool. I’m for anything that’s meat-eating, just so you know. Okay, I’ve got to go back to Daisy Ridley. I mentioned it earlier, Young Woman and the Sea. Folks, if you haven’t seen it, please do.
SPEAKER 06 :
Luke, go. Let’s continue the sea going with Soul Surfer.
SPEAKER 08 :
Ooh, well done, sir, well done.
SPEAKER 28 :
And, Ashley, you’re up. Water-themed, Sully.
SPEAKER 08 :
Sully. Nicely done, nicely done. I’m going to go with, ooh, there’s so many, Dunkirk.
SPEAKER 06 :

SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, we’re going military. Go, Miss Military.
SPEAKER 28 :
Erin Brockovich.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay. You go the opposite.
SPEAKER 28 :
I’m going the opposite direction.
SPEAKER 08 :
I’m going back to the military 1917. Trust me. Very good, Luke.
SPEAKER 06 :
Go. I’m also going back to the military or staying in it with mine.
SPEAKER 08 :
I have not seen it. Pretty cool.
SPEAKER 06 :
I like it, yeah. I think you should take a look. Very cool. Okay, Ashley, go.
SPEAKER 28 :
All right. Not military, but Congress, 1776.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, nicely done. A little music there. Yeah, a little singing. How about The Boys in the Boat?
SPEAKER 23 :
I don’t think I’ve heard of that one.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, it came out early last year. Really good. Very, very good. Luke, go.
SPEAKER 06 :
Let’s go with Silver Linings Playbook.
SPEAKER 08 :

SPEAKER 06 :
Yes. Very nice. You are up, Luke. Go. I like music. I also like La La Land.
SPEAKER 08 :
Excellent music. Really good.
SPEAKER 28 :
Okay, Ashley, go. Let’s go Rocket Man.
SPEAKER 08 :
Rocket Man. Okay. Depressing, but good. It got less depressing at the end.
SPEAKER 28 :
Yeah, it had a happy ending. Yeah, it did.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay, well, let’s go with Bruce Almighty. Ooh, okay. He turned his life around. Go ahead, Luke.
SPEAKER 06 :
There you go. Let’s escape the clutches of the man in the Truman Show.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yes. That was tough. Go.
SPEAKER 28 :
Let’s go with Coach Carter.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay, here’s one you guys have not seen, Searching for Bobby Fisher. It’s a little kid who plays chess. Trust me, it’s really good. Luke, go. Sounds good.
SPEAKER 06 :
Let’s see some Schindler’s List next.
SPEAKER 08 :
Ooh. Ooh. Takes a while for the inspiration, but yeah.
SPEAKER 06 :
But, you know, once it gets there, it gets there. It gets there.
SPEAKER 28 :
Okay, Ashley, go. I’m going to go back to education with the Ron Clark story.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, okay. I’ve not heard of this one.
SPEAKER 28 :
It’s another one about a teacher who gets into a bad school and a bad class and turns everything around.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay, I’m going to do one for creationists like me, God’s Not Dead. Quite good.
SPEAKER 06 :
Okay, Luke, you’re up. Let’s do one for meatheads like me, Creed. Yeah, I like Creed. I like Creed. I’m also not a meathead. I just wanted to find something to go along with it.
SPEAKER 08 :
I thought it was good. Okay, Ashley, go.
SPEAKER 28 :
I’m going to go with radio.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, I liked radio because I like the actor. Okay. Up next is Chariots of Fire. It’s classic. Trust me. And what a great song. Luke, go. Oh, a few good men. Yes. You can’t handle the truth. Can you handle the truth? Ashley, go.
SPEAKER 28 :
I can’t handle the truth that we haven’t mentioned this one yet. Remember the Titans.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yes, it’s on my list. It’s on my list, but I’m going to go with Hidden Figures. Yeah. You ever seen that one? Okay, Luke, you’re up.
SPEAKER 06 :
Go. Oh, let’s go with, I think this one’s on Netflix right now based off of a video game, Forward Unto Dawn.
SPEAKER 08 :
Ooh, nicely done. Ashley, go.
SPEAKER 28 :
I’m going to go with 42.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay, I’m going to go with a, that’s a good one, Jackie. I like it. I’m going to go with a very inspirational tale, Pay It Forward. Okay. A little Haley Joel Osment. It was terrific. And Luke, you’re up.
SPEAKER 06 :
Let’s get more Shia LaBeouf as a CGI penguin and surfs up.
SPEAKER 08 :
Exactly. You can’t do better than that. That’s very, guys got one minute. Go, Ashley.
SPEAKER 28 :
The Pursuit of Happiness.
SPEAKER 08 :

SPEAKER 08 :
I’m going to go Military U571. Very cool. Luke, go. Oh, let’s keep military going with Courage Under Fire. Yes, go.
SPEAKER 28 :
Let’s stop the military with The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
SPEAKER 1 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
I’m going football. We are Marshall. Luke, go.
SPEAKER 06 :
I don’t think there’s any football in Snowpiercer, but it’s a good inspirational and motivational movie anyway.
SPEAKER 08 :
Well done. Ashley, go. Little Miss Sunshine. Little Miss Sunshine. I’m going to finish it up with a few with a flurry. I’m going to go Gandhi, Invincible, The Passion of the Christ, The Rookie, Team America, of course, and Jesus Revolution. Those two movies have never been said back to back. And folks, that is going to end it here for Rush to Reason. Ashley, did you have a good time?
SPEAKER 28 :
I had a great time.
SPEAKER 08 :
