However, he was one of the great aviators and navigators of flights over the north and south poles. Col. Bill Rutledge (Ret. USAF) introduces Bernt Balchen. Balchen was born in Norway. In 1918 he joined the French Foreign Legion. Balchen was an excellent athlete. In 1920 Balchen registered for both Olympic Boxing and the Norwegian Naval Air Force.
