God disciplines you because He loves you. “Do not despise the discipline of the Lord. Those whom He loves He disciplines” (Heb 12:6). When you sin, you get out of the protective realm of God the Holy Spirit, which leaves you vulnerable. Your spiritual life ceases to function when you have unconfessed sin.
