(Worthy News) – In a historic milestone for human space exploration, the crew of NASA’s Artemis II mission has surpassed the distance record set during the ill-fated yet heroic Apollo 13 mission more than five decades ago.
At approximately 1:57 p.m. ET Monday, astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen crossed beyond the 248,655-mile mark from Earth—breaking a record that had stood since 1970. The previous benchmark was set by Jim Lovell and his crewmates during their emergency return trajectory after an onboard explosion forced them to abandon a planned lunar landing.
The Artemis II crew is expected to reach a peak distance of roughly 252,752 miles from Earth as their Orion spacecraft swings around the Moon in a carefully calculated “free-return” trajectory—mirroring the path that once brought Apollo 13 safely home.
The record-setting moment came during a 41-minute communications blackout, as the Moon blocked all signals between the spacecraft and Earth. Despite the temporary silence, the crew remained fully engaged, conducting scientific observations and documenting the lunar far side with high-resolution imaging equipment.
During a seven-hour flyby, the astronauts rotated duties—balancing mission operations, physical conditioning, and detailed geological observations. Their vantage point offers a rare opportunity: thanks to unique solar alignment, approximately 20% of the Moon’s far side is illuminated in ways never before seen directly by human eyes.
In addition to mapping and imaging, the crew witnessed a remarkable solar eclipse from deep space, as the Moon passed directly between their spacecraft and the Sun—revealing the Sun’s corona during a 53-minute occultation.
The mission also carried emotional significance. A pre-recorded message from Lovell, who passed away in 2025, welcomed the Artemis crew into what he called his “old neighborhood,” encouraging them to carry forward humanity’s exploration legacy. Another tribute moment included the proposed naming of lunar features in honor of loved ones, including Wiseman’s late wife.
Launched from Kennedy Space Center, Artemis II represents a major step toward NASA’s long-term goals of establishing a sustained human presence on the Moon and eventually sending astronauts to Mars. Powered by four RS-25 engines and twin solid rocket boosters generating 8.8 million pounds of thrust, the mission reflects renewed ambition in American-led space exploration.
Following the lunar flyby, Orion will complete its gravitational “U-turn” and begin a four-day journey back to Earth. The mission is scheduled to conclude with a Pacific Ocean splashdown off the coast of San Diego on April 10.
As Hansen reflected after the milestone, the achievement is not just about breaking records—but inspiring future generations to go even farther.
