(Worthy News) – The United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza on Wednesday, proposed by ten non-permanent council members. The resolution sought a “permanent ceasefire” and the release of hostages in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The veto sparked criticism from other members, with a senior U.S. official accusing them of rejecting compromise efforts.
The 15-member council voted on a resolution put forward by 10 non-permanent members, calling for an “immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire” and the release of hostages. The U.S. cast the sole dissenting vote, using its power as a permanent member to block the motion.
The United States told the UNSC that they would only support a resolution that explicitly called for the immediate release of the hostages as part of a ceasefire agreement.
This is the fourth Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza that the U.S. has vetoed since the war began.
