HR1 Rush To Reason November 22, 2024 by John Rush
SPEAKER 07 :
It’s finally Friday on Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush. So I tell him I’m a pro jack. And who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama himself. So we finish 18, and he’s going to sniff me. And I say, hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know? And he says, oh, it won’t be any money. But when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness. So I got that going. And movie reviews with Andy Payne.
SPEAKER 13 :
I think that you got the wrong impression about me. I think in all fairness, I should explain to you exactly what it is that I do.
SPEAKER 14 :
What I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.
SPEAKER 03 :
What do you want to do tonight?
SPEAKER 07 :
The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world. Stick a fork in me, Jerry. I’m done.
SPEAKER 11 :
Now, here is your host of Rush to Reason, John Rush. Filling in is Andy Pate, party of choice. And I’m your host, Andy Pate, filling in for John Rush, together with Luke Cash and Tanner Cole. That’s right, too much manhood. It is too much manhood in here. Okay, we’re going to kind of run through a little bit of Hollywood news. Well, first of all, piece of big news, obviously. Matt Gaetz is out for Attorney General. Pam Bondi is in. We’re going to talk about that on Monday, but do you have any thoughts?
SPEAKER 06 :
I don’t know either enough to have a strong opinion.
SPEAKER 04 :
The original case they were talking about that was such a big deal, the underage girl rape sexual assault case, I think they didn’t have any evidence. No. It’s been years, and nothing’s happened. They bring it up, of course, once he gets appointed. Him stepping down was honestly a very reasonable and just thing for him to do, just to take away the distraction.
SPEAKER 11 :
Exactly. Basically, they had no evidence. And honestly, the people making the accusations did not have very good credibility. However, it looked way too messy, way too much of an uphill climb. He steps aside. Just so you know, I was texting back and forth with John Rush, and I was saying four different names that I wanted as the new one, and one of them was Pam Bondi. So I’m happy as can be.
SPEAKER 04 :
She looks awesome. I didn’t know who she was, but I’ve heard her speak. She’s killer. Yeah, and she’s from Florida. Can’t complain.
SPEAKER 11 :
Can’t complain. Okay, next up. You know, guys, we did beat England in a war a couple hundred years ago. Nice. Revolutionary war. And we beat them badly. The underdogs. If there are any bloody Brits out there, I just want you to know you lost.
SPEAKER 04 :
You wanker.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay, and now to rub salt in the wound and finish them off, we are sending them Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia. Isn’t that terrible? I mean, how can we do a thing like that to them? Assault the wound. Assault the wound, I know. And once again, white Hollywood elites protest white supremacist Donald Trump by fleeing to white places.
SPEAKER 04 :
They’re whiter than us over there.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, and now England’s going to be even whiter. These two look like Steve Martin after giving blood. I mean, seriously, they are very white. So they’re going to run to one of the whitest places on earth to get away from that terrible white supremacist, Donald Trump. Rob Reiner! Did you hear this one? He says he’s checking into a mental health facility for post-election stress.
SPEAKER 05 :
What a loser. How nice does your life have to be for that to be like the breaking point? I don’t know. Because 77.
SPEAKER 11 :
No doubt he’s in the Robert De Niro TDS wing. He donated that. I think it was really great of him to do that.
SPEAKER 06 :
Very generous.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah. Let’s see. Both of them, they feel Trump has destroyed democracy by getting more people to vote for him. And I don’t know. I’m looking at these people right now. The meltdowns are fun. I’m enjoying it. I’ve heard they both asked if they could move in with Ellen and Portia. But the happy couple said, sorry, you’re not white enough. So they can’t go over there. So they’re stuck here. Rob Reiner. Yes, folks, he is going. Look, you know what? It is very painful if you lose a big election. Maybe I’m being too mean. What do you think?
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, that’s less Democrats voting next time. That’s all I can think of.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Unless they’re going to do mail-in ballots from across the pond, but I don’t know if you’re allowed to do that.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, we’re not allowing it. Sorry, no Brits can vote, Ellen, Portia. You’re out! That’s two votes gone. I love it. Okay, folks, do you remember Barbieheimer?
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
A year and a half ago, the theaters were absolutely flooded. We got that going on again this weekend, okay? I’m not quite sure how to put it. I’m going to take a shot at this. Wicked-iator.
SPEAKER 05 :
Stretch. Yeah, I know, it’s a stretch.
SPEAKER 11 :
Well, you try putting together wicked and gladiator, too. Okay, let’s hear it.
SPEAKER 05 :
Glicked.
SPEAKER 11 :
Glicked? Oh, that’s terrible. Wickediator is better. I win. I win with Wickediator. Glicked sounds like a disease.
SPEAKER 06 :
Exactly.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay, I’m going to be reviewing Wicked and Gladiator 2, two totally opposite movies with two totally opposite audiences. I’ll review them both today, and we will be doing NFL picks. We’ll hopefully get that in at the end of our number one with Tanner. Sound good?
SPEAKER 04 :
Sounds like a plan.
SPEAKER 11 :
All right, let’s take a break. Up next is Hi-Fi Plumbing Winter Inspections. Winter Inspections, they’re filling up fast. Don’t wait until you’re desperate on a cold night with a busted pipe. Call 877-WE-HI-5. Tell them you’ve heard about them at Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 18 :
The day after Thanksgiving is the busiest plumbing day of the year. Don’t let your home get stopped up. Just call High Five. During the holidays, your plumbing works overtime. Visitors and guests, big meals, we don’t need to tell you. And when your main line gets clogged, your floor and sink drains can back up, causing flooding. And even if it hasn’t gotten to the point of backing up yet, you still have a big problem that gets bigger every day. It’s recommended that you have a plumbing inspection early, and an inspection from High Five can be scheduled as soon as the same day. For a limited time, they’ll give you an additional $35 off a drain cleaning just for being a KLZ listener. So find out more about what High Five Plumbing, Electrical, Heating, and Cooling can do for you this holiday season by clicking their link on the klzradio.com advertisers page.

SPEAKER 16 :
Suck it up, buttercup. Back to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 11 :
And welcome back to Rush to Reason. Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Andy Pate filling in for John Rush along with… I’m looking at both of you. Luke Cash! Man! And Tanner Cole!
SPEAKER 04 :
Man!
SPEAKER 11 :
And Tanner! Got a question for you, buddy.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, yeah?
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, it’s very personal. Are you ready?
SPEAKER 04 :
I’m ready.
SPEAKER 11 :
Are you ready for a movie? I’m ready for a movie! Okay, Tanner.
SPEAKER 06 :
It’s always funny. It’s always funny.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay. A misunderstood witch becomes a classic villain in Wicked.
SPEAKER 13 :
Welcome, you students, to Shiz University. Where you can expect… The unexpected. You’re green.
SPEAKER 03 :
I am.
SPEAKER 13 :
Miss Elphaba, you can room with Miss Galinda.
SPEAKER 03 :
Oh, I saved you some space, by the way. Do you think this is fair? I do not. I was promised a private suite. But thanks for asking.
SPEAKER 09 :
You may have noticed that I am one of the last animal professors here at Shiz. But there was a time when life in Oz was different.
SPEAKER 03 :
Someone needs to tell the wizard that the animals are in trouble. That’s why we have a wizard. Because no one… What? Because no one should be laughed at. Or scorned. Or told to keep fighting. That was you who made all that happen. How did you do it? Some of us are just different. The wonderful Wizard of Oz summons you to the Emerald City. Come with me. I couldn’t possibly. This is your moment. I’m coming. You can do this. You can do anything.
SPEAKER 10 :
I am Oz, the great and powerful.
SPEAKER 03 :
Something bad is happening in Oz.
SPEAKER 10 :
The best way to bring folks together is to give them a real good enemy.
SPEAKER 08 :
You have no real power.
SPEAKER 17 :
That’s why I need you.
SPEAKER 03 :
This is so much bigger than us. I’m not afraid. It’s the wizard who should be afraid of me.
SPEAKER 11 :
It’s the wizard who should be afraid of me. Are you sleeping already? No, no, no. Wake up, guys. Wake up. This is important because women are going to make you go to this movie. So I want to prep you right now. You ready? Here we go. Okay. What if the Wicked Witch of the West was misunderstood? In fact, what if wickedness is misunderstood? What if the Wicked Witch of the West was misunderstood? Well, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, they star as the two classic witches in their youths, Elphaba and Galinda. Now, Elphaba, she has great power and was born with strange green skin, while Galinda is a classic beauty with all the ego and popularity that comes with it. Outcast even by her father, the governor of Munchkinland, Elfaba. Yeah, her dad’s the governor of Munchkinland. I forgot about that. Yeah. Well, Elfaba, she cares deeply for her paraplegic younger sister, Nessa Rose, whom she brings to the elite Shiz University. There, Elfaba demonstrates great power, drawing the attention of Madame Morrible. She’s played by Michelle Yao. You’ve seen her, right?
SPEAKER 06 :
I believe so, yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, okay. Who insists such a talent be enrolled to study magic. Okay. Galinda is instantly popular, of course, but resents Elphaba’s talent. So in classic mean girl style, Galinda conspires to make Elphaba even more of an outcast. She does it very well. Problem is, Galinda is self-absorbed, but she’s not mean. She’s a good witch. In time, she and Elphaba can’t help but become friends, though they spar over the handsome Fierro. Guy named Fierro. He’s pretty cool. But there are bigger issues at play in the Emerald City. The Wizard, he’s played by Jeff Goldblum. We all love him. He may not be all he’s cracked up to be, and oppression and bigotry, they seethe behind the scenes. Elfaba wants to stand up for the helpless, but this could make her the villain. Ultimately, this, Wicked Part 1, this is a story about friendship and hard choices. Can these two witches stay friends? That’s the story of Wicked Part 1. Tanner, what do you think?
SPEAKER 04 :
Sucks.
SPEAKER 11 :
So close-minded. Okay. What works in Wicked? Well, first of all, Erivo and Grande have fantastic voices for this musical. Grande also… I’ve got to talk about this for a moment. Ariana Grande, you know, she actually came up doing a lot of TV and so forth. But we really know her from doing her music video. She’s this little sex pot, you know, pixie and whatever. And so you kind of think, okay, that’s how she sings and dances and acts, right? Yeah. She nailed this role. She nailed Galinda so well. She was perfect. She was funny. She was, you know, really the only funny one in the film. Her voice, her singing voice. I don’t know if you know this about Ariana Grande. She’s opera trained. OK, she’s she and she sings opera. In this film and does it well. She has a spectacular singing voice. And of course, you know, so does Cynthia Erivo, just a gorgeous voice, both of them. But the one who surprised me the most was Ariana Grande. There’s something about delivering a funny line. It’s not enough to have a funny line written for you. And she had several of them written for her. It’s how do you deliver it? Right. What’s your timing? Do you say it too quickly and it goes right by people? Do you wait too long and the moment’s gone? Or do you just nail it? Now, I’m telling you guys, Ariana Grande needs to do more acting. I know she’s more of a pop singer now. She needs to get back into acting and do more of it. She is good. She was lights out. Next, Defying Gravity. That’s the song you heard. There were, I think, three really good songs in this movie and a couple others that were pretty good. Defying Gravity is the let it go of Wicked. It’s an ultimate showstopper. Real showstopper. It’s just tremendous. It’s kind of like pop. There’s another movie song called Popular, which is done by Ariana Grande in this. Really good. There are some songs in there that are catchy and memorable, and that makes a movie go well. Okay, the movie came alive, though. And it really came alive when the two of them dance. At one point, and I don’t want to give it away, but at one point, the Alfaba is a real outcast. And she does a dance on the dance floor. And then Galinda goes and dances with her. It’s an incredibly touching moment. And from there, they go off and have an important talk. And this was the first time during the movie where you suddenly… see the chemistry, and you bond with the characters. And I will say it was just a terrific moment, really well done. And finally, Wicked has one of the best endings you’re going to see all year, if not the best ending in a movie you’re going to see. So this movie ends very strong. What doesn’t work in Wicked? Gentlemen, I’m not going to sugarcoat it.
SPEAKER 06 :
Please don’t.
SPEAKER 11 :
This is a woke chick flick.
SPEAKER 06 :
And everyone was very surprised.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. This film was made to punish us for winning an election, gentlemen. I’m going to be honest. All those angry women you see doing video screaming in their cars, they’re surrounding you in the theater. And many are bald. That’s what I think. You’re thinking, no biggie, let them have their moment. Well, I’ve got the next four years to enjoy Trump. Unfortunately, this movie is almost that long. By the time I clawed my way out of the theater, Trump had already deported half of California. I’m telling you what. Jeez. This is a two hour and 40 minute movie. No. No. No, do not make a two hour and 40 minute musical like this. And by the way, it’s not just a musical. It’s more of an opera. You know the difference, right? An opera, virtually all of it is singing. Whereas a musical, you know, you have a lot of dialogue and then you get to the singing parts. This is singing almost the entire way through. And this was a real problem because while you had three songs that really stood out and a couple others that were, you know, okay, you had a lot of songs. There were like 11 songs in this. You had a lot of songs that all sounded the same, blended into each other. Did either of you guys see The Greatest Showman? No.
SPEAKER 06 :
I can’t stand musicals.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay, you hate musicals. You hate them all.
SPEAKER 06 :
I don’t, but I just never saw it.
SPEAKER 11 :
Well, when you see The Greatest Showman, you come out of there, and there’s like eight different songs that are all great, right? And they’re very different from each other, and you’re just, you know, the toe is tapping, and you’re remembering this one, this one, this one, this one, this one. I came out of Wicked, and obviously you remember Defying Gravity, but… You forget virtually all the songs. There’s not much memorable going on there. It’s just not that good, okay? I’m sorry, but most of the music in this musical is not very impressive. It’s just all the same kind of sounding stuff, and a lot of it was very unnecessary. Here we go. Half the men in this film, I think, are gay, and the other half wear tights and sing. Yeah. I’m exaggerating, of course, but just know that if Kamala had won, this would have been America. We would be living in woke hours, just so you know. I’m just saying, this is a rough watch for guys. I looked up in the audience, you know, it’s a packed house. I didn’t see a single guy in there who was not held captive by a female. Okay? Not one man went to this movie on their own. Okay, it’s just the way it is. They were dragged in there. I was dragged in there. My wife was there with me. But actually, of course, I had to do this. Like I said, there are three good songs out of a million. Way too much music. Here’s another part. The script is actually rather poorly written. This surprised me. Far too few punchlines. The side characters usually have a lot of funny side characters. No, the side characters are not funny at all. Really? I was really unimpressed. You have no really good side characters stealing the show and really bringing some fun to it. It really missed that. If it weren’t for Ariana Grande, I’m not sure I would have even chuckled once the entire two hours and 40 minutes.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yikes.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah. She was the humor of this movie, and outside of her, it was really tough. Here’s another big problem. A terrible waste of Jeff Goldblum. We’re talking one of the funniest actors in Hollywood, right? This guy can deliver a line. This guy is great. You saw him in that Thor movie, right? He was hilarious. He’s good. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You see him in so many movies. He is so great the way he delivers a line. Here’s what they did with him in this. He had lines. None of them were very funny, and you could tell Goldblum was really trying to deliver them and milk the humor for all it was worth, and it just wasn’t very funny. He didn’t have a good script. They needed to take more time and just write better stuff for this guy, this great comic actor. He was wasted, and it wasn’t worth it. Okay? Now, you may be thinking I’m ripping Wicked to pieces. No, I am not. Rotten Tomatoes, of course, gave it 92%. Actually, I think it went down to 90%. Okay, 90%. Whatever. This is a hard one to review because it’s for specific audiences. Quality, I’m going to give it three stars. Three stars. It was one and a half for me. Ironically, it was only two for my wife. She was bored out of her skull. She said it was so boring until about midway and then it really takes off. And it gets better. And the last quarter, really good, right? But boy, it’s a hard trudge getting there. I aged while watching this movie. For fangirls of the show Wicked, of course it’s a five star because it doesn’t matter if it’s 20 hours long. They’re not going to care. There can’t possibly be enough. We’re talking the age group that went and saw Titanic 50 times each. Okay? I mean, seriously. I’m just being honest. But we guys are the same way. We got movies. Got one coming up next, by the way, where it doesn’t even have to be very good, and we’re going to love it. Right? It’s true of each. So if this is right up your wheelhouse, I think you’re going to have a good time going to this. Is there talent? Yes. Is there great singing? Absolutely. Is it way too long? You bet. They should have cut. They needed, I was saying before the show, they needed Elon and Vivek to come in. And cut at least 40 minutes out of this movie. And they would have made it a better movie. Political, I’m giving it two just because of some of the woke imagery. Moral, religious, three. There was nothing preachy or really offensive about it. It was fine. I didn’t care. I was just bored. All right. But if you are, I’m just going to be honest, guys. There is a female in your life somewhere who’s going to drag you to this movie. Go, get into it, be ready to take a number of breaks, go out to the lobby, check on the scores, go back in, and smile. All right? You will be happier if you do that. And that is Wicked, part one. Let’s take a break. When we come back, we’re going to look at a movie that’s a little more up our alley.
SPEAKER 05 :
More our speed.
SPEAKER 11 :
A little bit of gladiator part, too. Sound good?
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay. Up next is veteran windows and doors. They often beat national retailer prices by 30 to 50%. For great windows and doors, call veteran at 303-529-0720.
SPEAKER 18 :
Veteran Windows and Doors challenge you to ask every window and door salesperson about the ratings of their windows and doors. Owner Dave Bancroft knows other window and door companies are trained only to sell, not on whether their windows are even engineered for your home. Dave has an app where he can show you the exact door the other company showed you, but Dave will also include the correct efficiency ratings and codes necessary for your home. The other companies’ doors often don’t meet code, energy-efficient ratings, or give you crucial tax credits on your products. Also, Veterans installation methods are far stricter than other companies. They do more flashing, sealing, and installation than is required to ensure your windows and doors are going to work the way they’re supposed to. And Veteran now offers financing. Get 40% off and free installation when working with Veteran windows and doors by going to klzradio.com.

SPEAKER 19 :
Now, back to Rush to Reason, presented by Hi-5 Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling, where every call ends with a high five.
SPEAKER 11 :
And welcome back to Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560, Andy Pate filling in for John Rush, who’s taking a little time off. And now, Mr. Luke Cashman, I got a question for you.
SPEAKER 06 :
What’s your question?
SPEAKER 11 :
Luke, buddy, pal.
SPEAKER 06 :
I’m listening. I’m listening, dude. I’m listening. I’m here.
SPEAKER 11 :
Are you ready for a movie? I’m ready for a movie! All right!
SPEAKER 08 :
Yes!
SPEAKER 06 :
Yes! Let’s go!
SPEAKER 11 :
Luke, are you entertained? It’s back to the arena in Gladiator 2.
SPEAKER 18 :
It is an art. Choosing gladiators.
SPEAKER 07 :
They’re usually prisoners of war. I claim this city for the glory of Rome. You have something in you. Rage.
SPEAKER 18 :
Never let it go.
SPEAKER 07 :
It will carry you… to greatness. I own you now. But whose head could I give you to satisfy your fury?
SPEAKER 09 :
The General will do. Rome has taken everything from me. But I will have my vengeance. There is plenty of pain waiting for you in the next life. I don’t know why you are so greedy for it in this one.
SPEAKER 17 :
Your Majesties. This is your radiator. It is.
SPEAKER 07 :
I have the trust of the Emperor.
SPEAKER 17 :
It will clear my path to the throne. You will be my instrument.
SPEAKER 10 :
I will never be your instrument. In this life or the next.
SPEAKER 17 :
Lucius, take your father’s strength. His name was Maximus. And I see him in you.
SPEAKER 09 :
Most fighters won’t survive.
SPEAKER 03 :
You must help him.
SPEAKER 14 :
I don’t fight for power. I fight the free road for men like them.
SPEAKER 03 :
Your name will be forgotten.
SPEAKER 07 :
You can still order. I must have power.
SPEAKER 09 :
Everything is forgotten in time. Empires fall. So do emperors. The odds are against you. The odds are always against me.
SPEAKER 05 :
All right, Luke, what do you think? Much more our speed.
SPEAKER 11 :
Much more your speed. Okay, Paul Mescal, he stars as Lucius, the little boy in Gladiator who is now a man. And as we begin our film, Lucius has fled as a child. He fled as a child out of Rome and is now living with his wife in North Africa. But the Romans, led by Acacius, or Asatius, I guess it is, and he’s played by Pedro Mescal. Who’s your favorite Roman general? Vote for Pedro. That’s what I say. Okay. Anyway, Asatius, he leads the Romans to attack the peaceful land of Lucius, where he’s living, because conquering armies always attack peaceful lands. I mean, that’s kind of all they do in these movies. The North Africans are overrun, of course, and Lucius loses his wife and his freedom. Now he’s a slave, and he’s sold to Macrinus, played by Denzel Washington, to be, you guessed it, a gladiator. Bum, bum. Exactly. Well, Lucius is breathing fire and wants vengeance, and Macrinus has his own designs on power. So Macrinus uses Lucius’ rage to battle into the emperor’s arena. Now, about the current emperor. Really, there are two of them, and they’re these two heartless brothers who are ruling over Rome. Gita is the smart strategist one, while brother Caricella is a spoiled child with power. Just a real… Yeah, very Game of Thrones-y. He reminds you more Game of Thrones, all right? And naturally, others are plotting to remove these losers from the throne, including General Asatius and his conniving wife, Lucilla. But the best is Macrinus. Denzel is scheming away, baby.
SPEAKER 06 :
Denzel.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, he’s got his designs on power. Well, Lucius hates Asatius and the emperors. Now, why does he hate Asatius? Obviously, you know, he led the battle that killed his wife and sold him into slavery. So he hates him and the emperors, while Macrinus and Asatius both want the throne. Kind of get the feel for it? Mm-hmm. All right. Meanwhile, there are plenty of battles, and like the first film had tigers, now we have rhinos, baboons, and even sharks.
SPEAKER 08 :
Nice.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yes, sharks. They fill the Colosseum with water and then have sharks. They should have put freaking laser beams on their heads. I think that would have added something. I’m just saying, just a little suggestion. Historically accurate. Yeah, totally historically accurate. Okay, who will survive these bloody battles, and can Rome finally be saved from these terrible leaders? What do you think?
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, I think we know the history of Rome, so we know what happens there.
SPEAKER 11 :
This is not historical, okay? Not at all. Okay. What works in Gladiator 2? Well, first of all, we’ve got to say it. Denzel!
SPEAKER 06 :
Denzel.
SPEAKER 11 :
Absolutely. What could have been a good role becomes great in the hands of a master.
SPEAKER 06 :
The best.
SPEAKER 11 :
Oh, this is something. There’s something about the guy. It’s not just great acting, but class. Whether he’s a good guy, bad guy, it don’t matter, man.
SPEAKER 04 :
Go ahead. I think he’s the biggest star that’s not on any of the lists right now. Epstein or Diddy. Gotta love him.
SPEAKER 11 :
Well, Denzel lives a pretty boring good life. I mean, there you go. Okay, the battle scenes, for the most part, have lots of gore and action. Man stuff. Yes. Right.
SPEAKER 09 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 11 :
All the performances are spot on, including the brother emperors. They’re really good. Watching great power in the hands of one chaotic child and another schemer. I mean, we see this in corporations, right?
SPEAKER 04 :
I mean, we do.
SPEAKER 11 :
Or churches or families.
SPEAKER 04 :
Hunter Biden in Ukraine.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, Hunter Biden in Ukraine. That’s a good one, right? Where you see these people who don’t belong in leadership. They got there the wrong ways, whatever ways they were. And we watch them wreck. Your company, wreck your country or state or whatever. That’s what they’re watching these guys do. And I just thought, I’m sorry, but we’ve all seen this. And I kind of liked it. Was there any other work a guy could find back then besides Gladiator?
SPEAKER 06 :
No.
SPEAKER 11 :
It just seemed like either you were Gladiator or you were in the crowd. I’m not sure if anybody actually sold food there. It was kind of fun. The pacing was surprisingly good most of the time for such a long film. I mean, this is two and a half hours, right? It’s not as long as Wicked or Woked.
SPEAKER 04 :
There’s not a part two coming.
SPEAKER 11 :
There’s no part two. This is part two. But for two and a half hours, honestly, I went in thinking this is really going to drag. It did not. It moved along pretty well. It kept you involved in the characters the whole way through. The ridiculous animal scenes were surprisingly fun and entertaining, even though you’re watching this cheesy CGI, right? And you’re watching this, you’re thinking, okay, this is just going to be stupid. A little bit with the rhino, but honestly, I was entertained. Are you not entertained? I was entertained. I was enjoying it. It had a good beginning, a good ending, and a good wrap-up for Gladiator. So that’s what works in Gladiator 2. What doesn’t work in Gladiator 2? Well, it’s still a little too long. Occasionally it loses some focus. I think they could have trimmed about 15 minutes, right? Uh, the CGI animals, they look rather fake at times and the battle scenes got a little bit silly with that. Now, then again, I’m just saying for me, I didn’t care. I was, I was having fun, but I’m just saying $200 million budget.
SPEAKER 06 :
That’s a lot of money.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, I think Elon and Vivek, they need to clean up Hollywood next. Once they’re done with the country, go to Hollywood. This needed more humor to lighten the mood and push the pace. And that was something I noticed with both this and Wicked. Both movies needed more humor because humor breaks up the monotony and wakes you momentarily and pushes along the pace. And this had only a very little bit, and it really needed more. All right, Rotten Tomatoes, they did not give this that great of a review. They gave it 73%. It’s not terrible.
SPEAKER 06 :
It’s not terrible. It’s not great.
SPEAKER 11 :
It’s pretty good, right? I’m going to go just a smidge higher than that. I’m actually going to give this four stars. I thought this was a very good, solid movie. Was it great? No, I’m not putting it up there with the greats. But is there anything in this movie that would take it down from a four from me? No, there isn’t. All right. And so I was rather surprised. I did not expect this to wrap it up as well as it did. Political three doesn’t say a thing. Don’t care. Moral religious, obviously, you know, two. I mean, come on. It’s Gladiator. Let’s be honest.
SPEAKER 04 :
We know what’s going on.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah. Do I recommend going to Gladiator two? Folks, I do. All right.
SPEAKER 04 :
Boys night out.
SPEAKER 11 :
Boys night out. You’re going to need it. With Wicked, you’re going to need it.
SPEAKER 06 :
Double feature.
SPEAKER 11 :
Hey, you know, honestly, there are going to be a lot of people who are just absolutely going to love Wicked. And Charlie, what did a caller say was the name? It was not Alfaba. What was her name? El-fa-ba-ba-ha-ha, or something like that. Okay, actually, for the most part, in Wicked, she was referred to as Elfie, kind of a friend name by Glinda. So, you know, it was very charming. I think you’ve got two movies here that are totally opposite. El-fa-ba-ha-ha? Like, mini-ha-ha? Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Benihana? Benihana? Tommy Bahamas? Sponsored Wicked?
SPEAKER 11 :
That’s crazy. I go to Alpha Bahaha to watch the guys entertain me while they crush me.
SPEAKER 06 :
I have no idea.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay, getting back to Gladiator 2. Do I recommend going to Gladiator 2? Yes. Is it as tight and great a movie as Gladiator 1? No. Is it that far behind? It is not as far behind as I expected at all. It is actually a very good movie. Folks, I recommend going and seeing this movie. You’re going to have a good time. All right? All right. All right, when we come back, we’re going to do NFL picks. SPEAKER 11 :
And welcome back to Rush to Reason. Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Andy Pate filling in for John Rush along with Luke Cash. Man. And Tanner Cole. Man. All right, Tanner, are you ready for NFL picks? I’m ready for some NFL picks. All right, Tanner, we start up with Dan’s team. Dan Muir’s team. The Minnesota Vikings are having a great season. They’re favored by 3.5 on the road at the Bears.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, the Bears offense is a joke. Caleb Williams can’t seem to stay upright. They’ve scored 46 points in the last four games, had a field goal blocked last week.
SPEAKER 11 :
Now, what is it? Is it him? Is it the line? Is it the receivers? Is it everything?
SPEAKER 04 :
I think it starts with the O-line. I mean, Swift has to score a touchdown for them to even get on the board.
SPEAKER 11 :
So basically, the Vikings are licking their chops.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, 26-13.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay, so I’m going to take the Vikings as well. Next game. This doesn’t make any sense. The Lions are only favored by seven at the Colts. Are you kidding me?
SPEAKER 04 :
They’ve won games by 30 points this year, if not more. So I think the Lions will win and cover. I might even…
SPEAKER 11 :
Do we add a zero? Do they win by 70?
SPEAKER 04 :
I mean, 750 maybe. Yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
We’ll both take the Lions. Next game, the New England Patriots. Let’s face it. It’s a rebuilding year. Nothing wrong with that.
SPEAKER 04 :
Drake May looks pretty good for coming in midway through the year, getting a concussion. I mean, he’s throwing touchdowns. He’s running the ball.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, I think he’s got a nice future. Just build around him. Right. I think they’re doing it the right way. They’re on the road now. Of course, they are young, though, and the Dolphins are more ready to compete. Dolphins favored by 7.5.
SPEAKER 04 :
I think the Dolphins win, even though they’re kind of playing for no reason. Just having two on the field, the whole team plays ten times better. I think the Dolphins will win.
SPEAKER 11 :
I agree. Okay, next game, the Buccaneers are favored by six at the Wolfel. New York Giants. John in Wyoming, I’m sorry.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, Daniel Jones is officially gone. They even cut him today. They cut him?
SPEAKER 11 :
They released Daniel Jones?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yep. I hadn’t heard.
SPEAKER 11 :
I’ve been so busy with other things.
SPEAKER 04 :
It’s phenomenal. So instead of Drew Locke starting, who’s the second string, they’ll start Tommy DeVito, if you remember him from last year.
SPEAKER 11 :
Tommy DeVito, yeah, he beat my Packers. Okay, so, all right.
SPEAKER 04 :
I’m going to take the Buccaneers by seven. Even though Chris Godwin’s out, I still think they’re a better team.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, I’ll take the Bucs, too. Okay, next game, the Cowboys. Wow. Dead man walking, Mike McCarthy. They are on the road at the Commanders. Commanders are favored by 10.5. When is the last time you’ve seen the Washington Commanders favored by 10.5?
SPEAKER 04 :
I don’t know if it’s ever happened. Even in their Super Bowl days, the Cowboys were still a good team back then, I think.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Wow. I mean, Jaden Daniels, in my opinion, is Rookie of the Year. I don’t think anyone’s even close. He’s been phenomenal. I think the Commanders win.
SPEAKER 11 :
Let me ask you about this. What about the wide receiver for Arizona?
SPEAKER 04 :
Marvin? Yeah. He’s been pretty good, but he’s had some bad games.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, well, he’s been banged up too.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, go ahead. Also, apparently on the Cowboys’ website, under quarterback, they have Daniel Jones on their website as a quarterback, the Cowboys.
SPEAKER 11 :
Might as well.
SPEAKER 04 :
Go get him. If they sign him and he starts, that would be the funniest game of all time. But I’ll take Commanders by 10.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, that would be funny. Okay, next game. Wow. This is weird. I’ve never seen back-to-back games with a 10.5 point spread. The Kansas City Chiefs are favored by 10.5 on the road at the Panthers. The Chiefs finally lost last week, which, by the way, I did predict. And now I think they’re ready to bounce back. What do you think?
SPEAKER 04 :
They’ve only scored over 30 points once this year. I think they’ll do that this week. Yeah, it’s mostly defense. Yeah, their defense has been great. I mean, Trent McDuffie, Chris… Jones. Chris Jones. They got Carl Loftus on the side, who’s great, too. I mean, not Chael Sonnen, but… Chael in the middle as well. Willie Gay. So I think Chiefs will win by, I don’t know, 20?
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, I do too. I don’t think 10.5 is enough. I really don’t. Okay, next game. You know, there are a lot of teams that are just fighting for the top pick or the top five picks. And one of them is Tennessee Titans. They’re on the road at the Houston Texans. Texans favored by 7.5. My gosh, do we have any close games?
SPEAKER 04 :
Texans, seven and a half. The season’s weird. There’s a lot of bottom feeders. And then there’s, like, it’s very one side.
SPEAKER 11 :
Have you ever seen, by midseason, a race for the bottom this fevered? No. I mean, you’ve got, like, 10, 12 teams. It looks like they are trying to tank the season and get in the top five picks.
SPEAKER 04 :
I 100% agree. I mean, I don’t know what the Titans, other than Calvin Ridley, I don’t know if they would score. I mean, he is the only reason they seem to get down the field. Will Lovis is… Well, he’s getting killed every time he drops back in his defense. And I’ve only been seeing them drafting O-linemen. I think you get rid of Will Lovis already.
SPEAKER 11 :
I think you get rid of their GM. Because if they’re drafting O-linemen and this kid’s still getting smoked every time he drops back, that ain’t good.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, remember, they fired Vrabel. And Vabel, with the team he had, took them to the number one seat in the AFC, and that team was not good other than Derrick Henry.
SPEAKER 11 :
I saw a game with the Titans, and all I can say is this. I mean, the kid is in his early 20s, right? Young, nimble, ready to go with life. I’m telling you, in two years, this kid’s going to be complaining about his hip.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
I mean, he is just getting wrecked. Okay, we’re both taking the Texans.
SPEAKER 04 :
Texans need to figure out their second half offense, though. They finally got a touchdown this last week.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, they look bad. Okay, next game, another easy one. The Broncos, who are red hot. That defense is smoke, and they’re on the road at the Raiders, who traded away their best player and just look awful. Broncos favored by six. It’s not enough, is it?
SPEAKER 04 :
No, Bo Nix had his best game, I think, last week. 300-plus yards, four touchdowns, and throwing at an 85% clip is crazy.
SPEAKER 11 :
Of course, he was up against a 32nd-ranked pass defense with Atlanta, but still.
SPEAKER 04 :
It was still impressive. Atlanta has a good offense, and they smoked him.
SPEAKER 11 :
Do they kill the Raiders?
SPEAKER 04 :
I think they win by 10. Yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
Handily. Okay, next game. The San Francisco 49ers are going into Green Bay at the Frozen Tundra to match up with my Packers. My Packers are favored by three. I’m going to tell you right out, I don’t agree. What do you say?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, I mean, after last game, barely escaping against the Bears, and the 49ers keep losing divisional games late, the 49ers are way more desperate for a win. Your division is stacked right now as well, so you’re looking for a wild card. I don’t know. I guess if you guys won and the Vikings lost… you’re still a wild card because there’s Detroit. So I think the 49ers have to win this game. I pick the 49ers to win by three.
SPEAKER 11 :
I pick the Niners to win, actually, by 10-plus.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, wow.
SPEAKER 11 :
I don’t think the Packers are a good team, and I know it’s my team, but that’s just the way it is.
SPEAKER 04 :
And the 49ers haven’t really exploded yet this year. McCaffrey hasn’t even scored yet. He’s played two games.
SPEAKER 11 :
Green Bay just lost Jair Alexander probably for the year. They’re done. Okay, I’m sorry. They’re not good. Okay, next game. Maybe the best game of the weekend. The Cardinals, Arizona Cardinals, are favored by one on the road at the Seahawks.
SPEAKER 04 :
I have it the other way around, actually. But this is a huge game because if the Seahawks win… them and the Cardinals will be tied for first in the West. And if the 49ers win, all three will be tied. If the Rams win, I think all four might be tied at 65.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, the West, they’re having a fight to the finish for who can be the most average.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, the most mediocre team. And that division, I mean, some years it looks like one of the best divisions. But the 49ers not being so good really tears it up. I mean, I like the Seahawks a lot. Granted, I have most of their… offensive weapons on my fantasy teams, but I’m going to take the Cardinals. They have won four straight, I believe. Or they’ve won five of the last six or so.
SPEAKER 11 :
You know what? We have agreed every single game. I’ve got the Cardinals too. Okay, next game, the Eagles are favored by three on the road at the Rams. Is three enough?
SPEAKER 04 :
Kellen Morse did a great job with that offense. Nick Sirianni needs to learn how to be an NFL coach, calling random timeouts, not calling timeouts at the right time. I think he needs to be examined, maybe. Yeah, but don’t the Eagles just have too much talent? I mean, we’ve talked about this. Their young talent is crazy. All those Georgia guys they have, N’Kobe Dean, Jalen Carter, I mean, and their depth, I think they’re too good. And at corner, oh my gosh.
SPEAKER 11 :
I know. Look, I think they’re the most underperforming team in the NFL.
SPEAKER 04 :
They have been for two years.
SPEAKER 11 :
And they’re like 8-2. Yeah. I just think they’re too good. I think they run roughshod over the Rams.
SPEAKER 04 :
Saquon’s the best running back in the league, yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right now, yeah. He finally got a line.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
There you go. Okay, one game left. It’s your game, sir, on Monday night. Come on, this looks like a good game. The Har Bowl. It looks like a good game, the Har Bowl. Okay, we got the Ravens. Our favorite by three going into L.A. against your Chargers. What do you think?
SPEAKER 04 :
I was really hot on the Chargers winning this game until that Bengals second half when we almost blew an 18-point lead. I think the Ravens need to win more. I don’t think the Chargers really think they can catch the Chiefs. We do play them again, but the Ravens could catch the Steelers who just lost last night.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, and I think another problem the Chargers are going to have is a problem that the Broncos had with the Ravens, and that is Lamar only has three interceptions all year. He has been very accurate, buying time with his legs, making sure that he is only throwing safe passes. He’s moving the chains. Now, by the way, the Ravens don’t have a good defense. It’s not very good at all. Herbert is going to be moving the ball, though. This could be a shootout.
SPEAKER 04 :
It seemed like the Chargers offense wasn’t going to be effective at all. But the last few weeks, they have kind of exploded. Herbert’s been throwing for over 300 yards. I mean, they look a lot better than the first few games. I think Jim gets revenge on his brother and the Chargers win.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay. Well, guys, we’ve got one more hour to go. And in the second hour, here is our topic this week. In honor of Gladiator 2, it is swords and knives. Yeah. Mainly. And there were a lot of swords and knives in Gladiator, too. Let me tell you something. And I kind of like movies with swords and knives because there’s something raw about them. It’s not just bullets flying all over.
SPEAKER 04 :
Especially a knife. It’s close combat.
SPEAKER 11 :
It’s close combat. You’re up there. Even swords are, though, right? Flashing, blazing swords going after each other. So we’re going to do any movie that has a swords or knives. You can have either or. Whatever works good for you. What do you think, Luke?
SPEAKER 06 :
I’m looking forward to it.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, I think this should be pretty fun. And also, by the way, if anybody has seen one of the two movies, Wicked or Gladiator, if you want to call in and chime in on that and give us your perspective, those are both movies that are very much in the eye of the beholder. And I knew that when I gave my reviews. It was rather difficult. So give us a call. Let us know if you think maybe I… Didn’t quite nail those movies, because maybe I didn’t. Sound good? Sounds great. Okay. Folks, that’ll do it for hour number one. Hour number two, once again, we’re going to be doing movies with swords and knives. Until then, keep it right here on Rush to Reason, KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 08 :
I’m a rich guy.
