In this episode of Rush to Reason, host John Rush dives into the mix of conspiracy theories with a review of the thrilling movie ‘Begonia.’ Alongside his trusty co-host Andy Pate, John unpacks the gripping narrative where corporate moguls meet unexpected resistance in a bizarre and terrifying reality. Tune in as they dissect how the film twists common conspiracy themes into a chilling story while examining talented performances from a star-studded cast, including Emma Stone.
SPEAKER 14 :
It’s finally Friday on Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush. So I tell him I’m a pro jack. And who do you think they give me? The Dolly Lama. So we finish 18 and he’s going to sniff me. And I say, hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know. And he says, oh, it won’t be any money. But when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness. So I got that going. And movie reviews with Andy Payne.
SPEAKER 17 :
I think that you got the wrong impression about me. I think in all fairness, I should explain to you exactly what it is that I do.
SPEAKER 16 :
What I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.
SPEAKER 11 :
Gee, Ray, what do you want to do tonight?
SPEAKER 14 :
The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world. Stick a fork in me, Jerry. I’m done.
SPEAKER 05 :
Now, here is your host of Rush to Reason, John Rush.
SPEAKER 07 :
All right, happy Friday, everybody. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Myself, Andy Pate, Charlie Grimes, and cooler today, Andy.

SPEAKER 07 :
Back when we were kids, you always wore your outfit over your coat.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Which always sucked, but whatever.
SPEAKER 04 :
I don’t know. Growing up in Wisconsin, well, you’ve seen the fans at Lambeau, right? No shirt, 20 below, idiots, okay? So anyway, I grew up with that. So we didn’t wear that much when we went out. We just went out. We went out and got cold.
SPEAKER 07 :
All right, question of the day. We’ll get this out of the way. We’ve got three movies to do today. So this was yesterday. What are weed whackers called in Australia? Whippersnippers. Okay. There you go. Whippersnippers. Only in Australia. Yeah. Today’s impossible question of the day. Name the person who wrote the first algorithm created specifically for a machine. So name the person who wrote the first algorithm created specifically for a machine. That is today’s question of the day. Without further ado, we’ll go to break. We’ll come back. Gil, what was your experience like working with RoofMax?
SPEAKER 20 :
Very good. With Dave Hart, we right away connected. You know, he was a very nice person to talk to, very accommodating. He even came over to my location when I asked him that I couldn’t go to him. He came to me and he walked the roof and he said, Gil, there’s just a couple of minor repairs needed. A few shingles needed to be replaced. And that was the start of our, you know, my conversation to go with him. I said, well, give me a bid and we’ll go from there.
SPEAKER 19 :
That’s great to hear. And how long did the process take from your first call to the final treatment?
SPEAKER 20 :
Well, it was an excellent experience. They were very accommodating with my time. Dave was very willing to meet my needs. and so gave me an idea of what it would take to repair it. It wasn’t very much, and so I think it was maybe he came over one day and then maybe two days afterwards and got it all done, all in one day. It was awesome.

And welcome back to Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560, John Rush, together with Andy Pate and John. Are you ready for a movie?
SPEAKER 07 :
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, John, Big Pharma. You don’t like Big Pharma.
SPEAKER 07 :
No.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, they get taken hostage in Begonia.
SPEAKER 09 :
I believe every company should strive to form a diverse table to empower people of different skills and every time. What is it?
SPEAKER 16 :
Skills and identities.
SPEAKER 09 :
To foster a new generation. Okay, let’s go again.
SPEAKER 12 :
They want you to think it’s you. That it’s you who made this world. But it’s always been them.
SPEAKER 11 :
All we’ve lost, all that’s been done to us, we’re saying that right again.
SPEAKER 12 :
Greetings. Welcome to the headquarters of the human resistance. Where’s my hair? Your hair has been destroyed to prevent you from contacting your ship.
SPEAKER 14 :
What ship?
SPEAKER 12 :
Your mother ship.
SPEAKER 14 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 09 :
In the next 48 hours, the police and the FBI will begin a statewide manhunt. I’m a high-profile female corporate executive. I am crucial. In all humility, I can say that. Think of it like you abducted the governor, but worse. There is no possible scenario where you benefit from this incident.
SPEAKER 12 :
That was really good. My pulse is racing right now. I’ve done a ton of research on this. You’re killing our planet.
SPEAKER 09 :
Alien fellows. I’m not an alien. You’re lying to me. What’s the difference? You know this is crazy. You know this is wrong.
SPEAKER 11 :
I know who you are. I know what you are.
SPEAKER 09 :
I know you too, Teddy.
SPEAKER 05 :
Okay, John, what do you think?
SPEAKER 04 :
How’s that sound?
SPEAKER 05 :
Weird.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, and it’s a scary movie. Trust me. So it’s that time of year. Here we go. Emma Stone. I like her. How about you?
SPEAKER 05 :
I do.
SPEAKER 04 :
I think she’s really good. She stars as Michelle, a big pharma executive who has the world at her feet. She’s big into yoga, karate, and she keeps herself in pristine physical condition. Well, Michelle even does an HR video in which she touts diversity and she wants a fair work environment where everyone leaves on time. But overtime is certainly valued. I mean, she’s just totally… you know, manipulative as a boss. Nobody trusts her. She is the boss nobody likes.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
Because she acts, she does it all with a smile and wants to act like she’s doing everything for you when she’s doing everything for her. And she’s just, ugh, repulsive. Well, anyway, everything is going well for her because that’s how she likes her life until Michelle gets kidnapped by a couple crazy brothers. Now, these two are Teddy, played by Jesse Plemons, and Don, played by Aidan Delbus. Now, Teddy, by the way, you know Jesse Plemons, don’t you?
SPEAKER 07 :
I think so.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. Yeah, I do. Well, trust me. Let me put it this way. I’m looking at him. You’ve seen him in more things than you think. Well, anyway, Teddy is a full on.
SPEAKER 07 :
I say like him.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, he’s a good actor.
SPEAKER 07 :
He was in Friday Night Lights way back in the day.
SPEAKER 1 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. He’s been around. Well, he’s a full on conspiracy theorist whose Internet investigation has shown him Michelle is actually from the Andromeda Galaxy.
SPEAKER 06 :
OK.
SPEAKER 04 :
He shaves her head because her hair is used to communicate with the mothership. Don is Teddy’s autistic and isolated brother. He has no idea of the outside world. Don is kept very isolated by Teddy. Now, the initial kidnapping, it goes very poorly since Michelle’s karate skills allow her to pummel these two clueless morons. But hey, it’s still two guys against girl and they have a knockout injection. She’s pretty much done. Well, it turns out Teddy works for Michelle. He actually works at her company and he deeply resents her.
SPEAKER 08 :
Hmm.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, that’s easy to believe. He also has a mother who was opioid addicted. She’s played by Alicia Silverstone. Remember her? And then there’s a cop who had wrongful interactions with Teddy as a youth. Teddy’s messed up for a reason. Well, ultimately, this is a hopeless situation with a brilliant woman who holds no cards. Teddy won’t believe Michelle no matter what she says, and he is a mixture of intellect and rage. Well, how can she escape? Do we care if such an arrogant person escapes? Is there any hope? We find out in Begonia. What do you think?
SPEAKER 07 :
Weird name, by the way.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, really weird name. I have no idea why it’s there. Okay, what works in begonia? Well, first of all, there’s a terrifying reality here. It’s easy to debate conspiracy theorists, I’ve done it myself, since their beliefs are so isolated from the world of facts. You start just bringing in the facts, right? But when their arguments fall apart, they become very dangerous people. All they have is their rage, and that rage has no limits. How many times have you seen this online and unfortunately in the news?
SPEAKER 07 :
Saw it today with somebody talking about, look at the sky and all the chemtrails that are up there. Oh, God. Yeah, no people. No, those are called contrails. And no. Anyways, just side note. Yes, Andy, I’ve seen that.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, I’ve noticed they’re going straight because of the flat earth that they are going over. But anyway, well, the performances in this movie, here’s what else works in Begonia. The performances are outstanding. Emma Stone, she’s perfect as the heartless corporate leader who can act like she has a heart.
SPEAKER 05 :
Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER 04 :
Jesse Plemons has remade himself for this role. I’ve never seen him do anything like this, John, and he nails it. Now, Aidan Delbus, who is autistic in real life, he is, he brings great reality to his role, does it very well. Next, there is some dark humor, and the action is good. There’s a decent story pacing, especially later on in the movie it picks up. Fascinating watching the captor and the captive bicker. I was actually very fascinated by watching the two of them go at it because they’re almost playing out for you what you see online in these Facebook debates talking to conspiracy theorists all the time. You get some rational person. Now you get the angry people who just yell at the kook or they agree with the kook. But then you get some intelligent person. You’ve done it. I’ve done it. Joe does it. We go on there and we have to talk and reason with this person.
SPEAKER 05 :
Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER 04 :
And we’re actually seeing that happen in real life, only this is very dangerous because he’s an incredibly dangerous and sick person. Both believe they’re saving the world. which is interesting. She believes she’s doing it with her job. He thinks he’s doing it with, of course, stopping the Andromedans. And there is a good message. Misinformation and mistreatment can create monsters. I never liked when the Biden administration called anything that called them out misinformation. It was nonsense, of course. Anything that Biden information, I don’t mean to get political. But I would actually say this if I were apolitical. It was just such a pattern. Anything they called misinformation almost almost inevitably became real.
SPEAKER 19 :
Right.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. But the fact is, John, there is misinformation out there, a lot of it. And you get some winds up these kooks and makes them very dangerous. And that is something you see in this movie. Next, what doesn’t work in begonia? Not enough humor. They needed more humor, especially when you’ve got such gifted people in the roles. You’ve got to use them. And the pace, it really slowed through the middle. It was very hard. Next. Flat-out depressing. No one is likable. No hope is given. This is very Fargo-ish. In that way.
SPEAKER 07 :
It’s funny you say that because in the TV series, he’s in one of the seasons. Plemons? Yeah. And he’s actually a weird guy in that as well.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, he belongs in it.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Because Jesse Plemons can do the hopeless thing.
SPEAKER 07 :
He does. No, he does. You’re right.
SPEAKER 04 :
You know, he has kind of a hopeless look in his eyes. He does. When you look at him. Well, yeah, he does it here too. Next, the ending, while full of plot twists, gets a bit ridiculous. It really does. And… I will just say it needed to be higher tech than it was. I’ll leave it at that. Finally, there’s a rough torture scene where he tortures her. That would be a lot for some people to watch. I’m just going to be honest. It’s a bit for some people to watch that.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
So I don’t want people to go in watching this thinking, oh, there’s something like that. This will just be a fun movie.
SPEAKER 07 :
Not so much.
SPEAKER 04 :
It is. I mean, it’s very… Look, if you want to watch great acting, John, you’re going to see it in this movie. If you want to see… an interesting phenomenon watching an intelligent person talk to a conspiracy theorist, you’re going to see something. I mean, it is so rare that you see that phenomenon. We see it online a lot because we’ve dealt with it, right? I mean, we’ve dealt with it. Good point. Yeah, and to see it actually played out in a movie was very interesting, but it got very slow for quite a while, and that torture, that was rough. Okay, and you’re just like, oh, my gosh. Okay, Rotten Tomatoes. They gave this movie 87%. That’s pretty high. Yeah, I’m not going to go that high because I thought it got too slow at times. I thought it could have been funnier. I thought it was too depressing at times. It just was too much of a downer for me. When I think about these four-and-a-half, five-star movies, I’m thinking of a movie I really want to watch and want to watch again. I don’t want to watch this again. But it was well-made. In a lot of aspects. I mean, there was a lot of good directing. The editing, for the most part, was pretty decent. The writing, for the most part, was quite good. And it was just worth watching. I’m going to give it quality three and a half stars. Okay. Three and a half stars out of five, so that’s pretty strong. That’s not bad. Yeah, not at all. Political three, really, left or right, you could see people being this way.
SPEAKER 06 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
And we see people on the left or the right being this way. And what was interesting is Teddy said that he had gone the gamut. You know, far right, far left. He had done it all. Okay. And so they didn’t paint him as coming from the left or the right, which I was very surprised by. I guess that’s a positive of the movie. Right. More religious, too. Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay, for obvious reasons.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, for obvious reasons. Now, I understand it’s just the genre, but they do make it pretty rough. And so I’m going to give it two for more religious. Do I recommend going to Begonia? You know, folks, it depends on what your stomach is like. You know, if you can handle this kind of thing, if you’re into this kind of thing, and if you want to watch an intelligent person who has no power in the situation, unfortunately, she has no power, okay? And if you want to watch her spar with a crazy person who holds all the cards, now you see that in a lot of these scary movies. But if you want to see the kind of discussions that you see play out online put in a movie, okay? then Begonia is for you. And you’re going to see a lot of great acting. And by the way, it’s very tense. It’s going to pull you along. You’re not going to be, I was bored through the middle, but it picks up. You’re not going to be bored for long. It is worth seeing. If you want to see a tense thriller, then go see Begonia.

The best export we have is common sense. You’re listening to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 04 :
And welcome back to Rush to Reason. Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560, John Rush, together with Andy Pate and John. Are you ready for another movie?
SPEAKER 05 :
Movie two. All right, here we go. Movie two.
SPEAKER 04 :
We meet a small misunderstood monster in Stitch Head.
SPEAKER 15 :
shall be my greatest creation ever it’s not ready we did it i did it welcome to almost life registered trademark patents pending i’m stitch head whoa is this a castle this is where you sleep Everyone stay calm! Creature, these are our monsters. Oi! Bedtime, everyone. Story! The Mad Professor made you and all the other monsters here. The monsters were safe and never left the castle. And that’s how they live happily ever after.
SPEAKER 11 :
Is life boring? I’ll make you famous like you never believed. And the most brain-blowing show on earth!
SPEAKER 13 :
Take my hand.
SPEAKER 18 :
Up, up!
SPEAKER 03 :
They’ll love you! Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to be terrified!
SPEAKER 05 :
Are you terrified, John?
SPEAKER 07 :
This is a cartoon, right?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yes, it is. This is for kids. All right, well, high atop a hill outside the village of Grubber’s Nubbin is Castle Grottescue, or as it’s otherwise known to its inhabitants, Almost Life. Here, a mad scientist creates monsters in his electricity-filled lab. Each is a new mashing together of human and animal parts, and all are told they must be quiet and hidden, lest the villagers rise up and attack. And who guides them all? Stitch Head. Makes you wonder, why is he up there doing all this, knowing that the villagers would just attack if they saw what was going on? I don’t know. I have no idea. They don’t say. Anyway, Stitch Head was the first creation. A small boy with different colored eyes and stitched together pieces of other bodies. He is kind, caring, and given the task of introducing each new creation to the castle. He is their caretaker. But John, Stitch Head is lonely. He’s unloved. Like many first creations, Stitch Head is not valued by his creator. He was just a warm-up for the other real monsters. He was a first try. As such, Stitch Head is taken advantage of. But he cares about the monsters, and each night, as he reads them bedtime stories, he tucks them in. In a helpful video, he tells them his motto, stay quiet. I’m sorry, stay hidden, stay quiet, stay safe. But eventually, this overworked and underappreciated soul gets swept away by a new guy in town, the felonious Fulbert Freakfinder. Mr. Freak Finder runs a traveling show of freaks that isn’t doing too well, but when he meets Stitch Head, he tells him he’ll make him a star, one who will be loved and appreciated by the crowds. Well, at first it goes well, as Stitch Head indeed becomes a star. But stardom has… I’m sorry, stardom has a cost, John, and Freak Finder is using Stitch Head as much as the mad scientist did. Ultimately, we see torches, pitchforks, and poor little Stitch Head trying to survive. Can he save his misfit monster friends? Can he save himself? And can we find out what happens with Stitch Head? And that’s the story of Stitch Head. What do you think?
SPEAKER 08 :
Doesn’t sound that bad.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
I mean, I kind of like the story.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right. Well, what works in Stitch Head? A pretty good message. First of all, just be whoever you’d be if you weren’t afraid.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
I think that that could apply. It doesn’t really matter what your upbringing is, is it? I mean, you could be this crazy leftist, right? Right. All the way from the trans kids and whatever, you know, just be whoever. Or you can be a Christian. Speaking out, you could be Charlie Kirk. Just be whoever you’d be if you weren’t afraid. This theme could be used by people of any political or religious persuasion. Great point. Next. Asa Butterfield, he does a good job voicing Stitch Head. So helpful, so good, so methodical. Just a really perfect voicing, really good casting there. Next, the cartoonistry is solid and harmless. I kind of like this. The monsters, they’re about as scary as Monsters, Inc.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
You know, it’s really, they’re not that scary and they’re not supposed to be. It’s for kids. It’s for kids. Now, there was a pretty good pace through the first third of the movie where it’s very touching. All right. And you have a couple of charming friendships with Creature. He’s called Creature. And Arabella, she’s a little girl. So you got a monster and a human. They both have friendships with Stitch Head. Well, what doesn’t work in Stitch Head? Much of the charm is lost when Stitch Head joins the freak show.
SPEAKER 08 :
Hmm.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, it’s really very charming watching him survive and what he does for the other monsters and how they act within the castle. But, of course, they have to add to the story from there. And when they do and get to the freak show, it gets loud. It gets annoying. It’s not as fun. It’s the same old, same old of the trappings of success going to your head. And we’ve seen it a million times before, and it’s just not very charming anymore. The story pace slows down badly when the action picks up. You ever notice that with some kid films? Suddenly, you have a really good story going, and then suddenly they put action, action, action, action, and this and that, and a lot of songs and dance, and you’re bored. And it just falls apart. I was bored. Silly. I really was. And I wasn’t alone. Next, it needed more humor and less predictability. You could really see where it was going. Nothing seemed to work. Everything seemed out of sync in this movie, John. It seemed there just wasn’t it wasn’t working. You know, I always mention things like Finding Nemo or Cars and some of these great cartoons where the chemistry, everything works, right? It all clicks. This person says this. It’s funny. Why? Because he’s playing off of that character. And so forth. It goes back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. It wasn’t happening in this movie. It was just kind of falling apart. Finally, it was pretty awful, forgettable, with the music. The music was not good. The music scenes, I was just like, oh my gosh. End the music, whatever you do. Someone pull the record out.
SPEAKER 06 :
Wow.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay? Pull the disc out, whatever. This film is a big letdown. Now… This is something interesting because you always wonder with these kid films, is it better for kids or better for adults? Well, good news. It’s equally bad for both. This was a big letdown for adults and kids alike. You have a lousy pace and not much fun feel for the kids. And it’s flat out boring for the adults. This is just not a good cartoon. I don’t understand the score it got from Rotten Tomatoes. The… People who had kids in the audience, the kids were not responding to it at all. And when it was over, they immediately ushered out. You know, a lot of times you can tell what the kids want to stay and watch the credits and watch, you know, and listen to the music. Nope. Everybody wanted to write out. Yeah. Rotten Tomatoes gave it 68%. For the record, it started out around 80%. And I think that was some of the less honest. A lot of times the more honest critics come in toward the end. I don’t know why that is, but it’s very true. And it started going down 75, 74, 70, 68. It’s not good. I’m going to take it all the way down to one star. I was bored. Okay, quality one star. This is a boring movie. Political three, moral religious three, no problem with either one. Didn’t preach at me. I just didn’t care. Maybe it should have. This is a boring kid flick, and that’s really disappointing because right now it’s the only one.
SPEAKER 07 :
It’s too bad.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, nothing else has come out in the last few weeks. So sorry about that, John. Stitch Head is not worth seeing. Do I recommend seeing it? Of course not. Do I recommend renting it later? Not really.
SPEAKER 08 :
Is that bad?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, it’s just boring, John. And it’s too bad because you’re watching it for the first quarter. You’d be watching this and thinking, geez, Andy, this is pretty charming. I like him. I like kind of what they’re doing here. Then it kind of starts to, quote, unquote, take off, and it just takes off downward. It just tanks. It tanks. And I did read some of the reviewers. The funny thing is, is a number of the reviewers felt exactly the same. A number of reviewers said the moment you leave the castle and he goes out and does the entertainment, they said it became loud, noisy, unentertaining, and I didn’t like it. And I watched it. I was like, yep, that’s exactly how it is. So there you go. Do I recommend Stitch Head? No.
SPEAKER 07 :

SPEAKER 13 :
Now back to Rush to Reason on KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 04 :
And welcome back to Rush to Reason. Dentor’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560, John Rush, together with Andy Pate, and John! Are you ready for a third movie?
SPEAKER 07 :
Hopefully better than the last two.
SPEAKER 04 :
I think we can do, well… We’ll see. Okay, here we go.
SPEAKER 07 :
We’ll see.
SPEAKER 04 :
You know, John, it’s hard to leave your family behind. Wouldn’t you agree?
SPEAKER 05 :
True.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, it’s even harder if they are criminals. And we find that out in Violent Ends.
SPEAKER 10 :
The world’s changed. Someone gets in your way, you get them out of your way.
SPEAKER 21 :
Ask yourself, who’s it gonna be?
SPEAKER 09 :
Who’s that?
SPEAKER 17 :
That’s Sid. He’s my cousin.
SPEAKER 15 :
Somebody wrote about him. You don’t have to do this.
SPEAKER 09 :
Shut up!
SPEAKER 19 :
We all know Sid killed her.
SPEAKER 13 :
Can’t go start the war right now. It’s just bad for business. I think it was the family business that killed him.
SPEAKER 11 :
I see where this is headed.
SPEAKER 09 :
Why are you telling me this? Sweetheart, this is not you. You sure are nothing like your daddy. I’ll give you that.
SPEAKER 14 :
You mess with one person on this side of the family, you’re going to open up a whole can of worms.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, John, a lot more. It’s very taut, very tense. What do you think?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, it sounds like it.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right, let’s jump in. Well, this is actually based on a true story of the Frost family from the Ozarks. Okay, so Billy Magnuson, do you like him?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, I’m looking at all the actors in here, actually, yeah. Yeah, yeah. He doesn’t play many bad guys, though.
SPEAKER 04 :
No.
SPEAKER 07 :
He has occasionally.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, he’s not a bad guy in this.
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, he’s not. Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
He usually plays more of the comic relief.
SPEAKER 07 :
He does. He does. Yeah, that’s right.
SPEAKER 04 :
In movies. And that’s why I thought it was pretty interesting to see if he could stretch his acting talents and do more of a serious role. And just so you know, he nailed it. I’ll get to that later. All right. Well, he stars as Lucas Frost, a good guy living in the Ozark Mountains in the 1980s. His family is a crime family dealing drugs throughout the region, but they are divided into two camps, Lucas’s dad and his uncle. They have the two camps, and they are, I mean, it’s like Hatfields and McCoys. Really? They do not like each other at all. And you would think family’s family? Not here. Okay, it’s the opposite of Godfather. Okay. Lucas stays out of all that. He really does, and he has a happy relationship with his fiancée, Emma. She’s played by Alexandra Shipp. I don’t know if you know her. I’ve seen her in a lot of things. Very pretty young lady and a good actress. Well, as far as Lucas is concerned, life is good. But then a couple of Lucas’s cousins, Sid and Eli, they commit an armed robbery that goes violent. Through an unlikely set of events, Lucas gets dragged back in. Now Lucas is bent on revenge and nothing’s going to stop him. He’s had it with the family war and he’s going after the heads of the family. And there’s another dynamic here in that Lucas’s mom is a cop.
SPEAKER 06 :
Oh, boy.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yes. And so this had a real Fargo touch to it with her. It really did, as she was investigating. And I kind of wish they had done more of that, but she did a really good job. Now, there’s division everywhere in the family, right? Because you’ve got the one crime side, the other crime side, and then mom’s a cop, and then he doesn’t want to be involved with any of it. While we see Lucas targeting drug lords, his mom is unraveling the events and searching out the mystery. Well, anyway, with Lucas trying to fight his way through that world, things are going to get messy. Is there any way to stop such madness, or does it all come to violent ends? That’s the story of violent ends. What do you think? It actually sounds pretty good. Yeah, doesn’t this sound like the kind of movie that you and I would like?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, I could get into this.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. Well, what works in violent ends? First of all, the acting, John. Great acting.
SPEAKER 06 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
everybody is spot on nobody in this movie there was no one in this movie where i was looking at them saying nah they’re not doing the character quite that well nope every single one they nailed it uh magnuson he needs more roles i’m just gonna say it right now he’s good yeah he is a compelling hero in this crime action drama he really is now james brad dale I’m just going to say, best supporting actor, they might want to consider it. He’s amazing as Sid Frost, the main villain. And he’s the villain in this. You know how I love a great villain. We’ve done Best Villains Week and this kind of thing. He would be put in that role. He is a terrific villain. He is vicious. Now, you have good violence, good action. It’s very intense. The Southerners, here’s something I like, John. How are Southerners usually treated by Hollywood in these movies?
SPEAKER 07 :
Like rednecks.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, toothless idiots, right? A bunch of toothless bigots. I didn’t see any of that in here.
SPEAKER 06 :
Really?
SPEAKER 04 :
Right, and by the way, Alexander Shipp, she is black. Okay, so he is marrying a black girl. There was no talk about racism. Hmm. Good. Okay. Now, that doesn’t mean these are good people, but I mean, they didn’t even get into that. They didn’t care. This is all about crime. This is about drugs. All right. So they aren’t all toothless bigots. I like that Southerners were treated respectfully in this movie. They’re just good and bad people, and the bad guys are seriously bad. I cared about Lucas and Emma, which says a lot this year. Honestly, John, there haven’t been a lot of characters in the movies that I’ve actually cared about this year. Not many. Some really grip you. Don’t you love it when you’re watching a movie and you’re just gripped by the character? And you really want to see what happens to them as the movie goes along. Absolutely. Because it draws you in. You care about the story. You care about the movie. Absolutely. Too often this year, what you’ve had is the characters have just been people saying the lines and going through situations, and there it is. And maybe you care about it, maybe you don’t, but you don’t care much about them. In this movie, I did care a lot about the central characters, and that was good. And they’re good characters. Good characters throughout the movie, I like that. Okay, what doesn’t work in Violin Ends? The pace, it slowed badly through the middle, and this was a real problem. Also, a very few, but very bad, implausible action moments. Oh, don’t do that in movies like this. Look, when you have such great acting, and you set it up so realistically, and you make it feel so realistic, don’t have those times where there’s too much shooting aimed at a fully exposed Lucas, you know, as he’s running with too little hitting him. There’s no way that these guys from the Ozarks are that bad of shots.
SPEAKER 08 :
Very true.
SPEAKER 04 :
I mean, come on. And I look at that, and that’s just sloppy directing. At that point, I’m just saying, hey, come on now. You’ve got this great acting. You’ve got some really good writing. Come on, man. Let’s keep it together. Let’s keep it tight. Let’s keep it believable, because you’re taking me out of it right now. That’s no fun. It needed more humor, or at least some humor. There was no humor in this movie. It was just too depressing. It was a slog. Don’t do that. Have a little humor in it. Pep it up a little bit. You can do that. Next. Honestly… This felt a lot like Mystic River, the feeling of that, which I think is a terrific movie. I’m not sure. Are you a fan of Mystic River? Oh, yeah. Good. But without the compelling characters. Okay. The acting was just as good. It’s just not as interesting. All right. It just kind of moved on to a predictable close. This was just, it was not a bad movie at all. Don’t get me wrong. And again, great acting. It’s worth a ticket. But this movie, Violin Ends, is just not that memorable. Mystic River sticks with you.
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, I watched it not long ago.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, did you? Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Did you?
SPEAKER 04 :
It is. Okay, you tell everybody. We’ve got a few minutes here. Talk about the acting in Mystic River. Talk about the directing.
SPEAKER 07 :
All of it. Even though it’s somewhat slow at times.
SPEAKER 04 :
It is.
SPEAKER 07 :
But yet, it’s the slowness at times that still makes the movie super interesting. Am I saying that in the right way?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yes, you are. In other words, they’re slowing down the pace to really grind into you.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right, the characters.
SPEAKER 04 :
The characters.
SPEAKER 07 :
To your point, what happens to them and what are they going to do next and how does it end and so on.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, something very similar would be Copland.
SPEAKER 07 :
And I think especially Mr. Little Slow. That one, that movie especially, I think any of us like Charlie and I that grew up in the church with that whole legalistic end of things, which is very much in that movie, can really relate to both boys and what they’re going through living in that particular situation.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, here’s a similar case. Let’s do a totally different kind of movie. Really quick here. Let me give my review of Violent Ends. Real quick. Rotten Tomatoes gave it 79%. I’m going to give it three stars.
SPEAKER 06 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
So not bad. Good movie. No, good movie, but not memorable.
SPEAKER 06 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right? To be memorable, you’ve got to be three and a half, four stars. Right. Political Three didn’t say a thing. More religious, one and a half for obvious reasons. Right. And I might be a little kind there. Do I recommend going to Violent Ends? Yeah, why not? I actually kind of enjoyed it, but it was pretty slow during the middle. Then it picks up, but I love the acting. Okay. What was that movie, again, where they robbed the racetrack?
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh. It’s a good movie. Real good. Yeah, I’ll think of it in a second. Doggone it. I’m trying to remember. It’s not with the name that you would think.
SPEAKER 04 :
No. Are you going to bring it up?
SPEAKER 07 :
I’m going to look right now.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, you look it up. Because I want you to compare that for a moment to the attack. Logan Lucky. Okay, Logan Lucky. There we go. Compare that to The Italian Job. Now, The Italian Job had a brisk pace every step of the way through. Bam, bam, bam, bam, bam. Just moving the story, moving the story, moving the story. And the characters being developed really quick. Logan Lucky took its time.
SPEAKER 05 :
True.
SPEAKER 04 :
And was a slower movie. True. But it was terrific. And that’s kind of what I would look at with Violin Ends and also with Mystic River. Right? Copland. Some of these movies. Some of these movies that move a little slower, it’s not that bad.
SPEAKER 07 :
Agree. Agree. No, and Mystic River is exactly one of those. It’s like you expect it to be a little bit slow. It is a little bit slow, but it’s really not slow. I mean, it’s hard to explain. It’s slow, but it’s not slow. It’s slow, but it’s still interesting in the slow parts. You’re still watching it. It’s not like you want to get up and leave and come back and watch it five minutes later because you might miss something, actually. You might actually miss something.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, there’s the big key. You don’t want to miss something. Right. In Logan Lucky, it was fairly slow for a while through the middle. Yeah. But I didn’t want to get up and miss anything.
SPEAKER 07 :
No, no, no.
SPEAKER 04 :
Because it was very interesting. And by the way, I was watching some knockout acting.
SPEAKER 07 :
And Mystic River, of course, you look at the actors that are in that, that back in the day were very young and really starting off in the 80s and so on. I mean, it’s solid.
SPEAKER 1 :
Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
So, by the way, folks, if you want to rent a movie, I would recommend Mystic River.
SPEAKER 07 :
It really is a good movie, yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
It is a good movie.
SPEAKER 07 :
It’s solid.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. I mean, what do you like better, Mystic River or, I’m going to say the second one, Gran Torino? I like Gran Torino a touch more.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, probably. Yeah, because it’s got more action to it, you know, and it’s Eastwood and all that. Although Mystic River is just, I mean, Mystic River is one of those movies that you can’t hardly not like it no matter who you are.
SPEAKER 04 :
I like a lot of the characters in Mystic River. They’re all so good. But there’s no one character in Mystic River who I love as much as Clint’s character in Gran Torino. And so when you build a movie around that one central character, it’s just so fun.
SPEAKER 07 :
Absolutely. Nope, can’t disagree with that 100%. You’re right.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right, there you go. Anyway, Violin Ends. Should you go to it? You know, right now it’s a pretty good movie.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
It’s worth it.
SPEAKER 07 :

SPEAKER 03 :
Live and local, back to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 07 :
All right, Andy, what are we doing next hour?
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, next hour, of course, given the time of year, we’re going to do scary movies. Now, scary movies is not to be ghost stories. It can, right? Or not. Anything that scares you.
SPEAKER 07 :
True.
SPEAKER 04 :
I had a lot of people giving me these suggestions. Here’s a couple that I thought were really good. The last Biden debate.
SPEAKER 07 :
Good one.
SPEAKER 04 :
I’m trying to remember some of the others. Oh, the thriller, the video.
SPEAKER 07 :
How about every Kamala commercial?
SPEAKER 04 :
Every Kamala commercial.
SPEAKER 07 :
Those are scary.
SPEAKER 04 :
You know, here’s the funny thing. I know people are saying, oh, man, don’t talk politics. We’ve had it all week. But I’m just saying the last, I would say, decade of politics has had the most extreme characters we’ve ever seen in our lives.
SPEAKER 07 :
Can’t argue that.
SPEAKER 04 :
I mean, we’ve never seen obviously we’ve never seen anybody dominate the scene like Trump. We’ve never seen anybody utterly fall apart like Biden. We’ve never seen anybody as embarrassingly clueless as cackling Kamala.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right. Well, and even people like I know you sent me an article today on MTG, you know, Marjorie Taylor Greene, who where she goes from one side of the spectrum literally to like she it’s almost like she’s bipolar and she goes completely the other side.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, now she’s coming off like a lefty. She’s just weird, Andy. Yeah, and I saw a really good article on that. This one guy, he said, look, he said, these ones who become Jew haters, and he just calls it like… Like we do, like I do. And he says, what inevitably happens is when you see one of them go that way, they start going left on other issues as well.
SPEAKER 06 :
Bound to happen.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, I thought it was kind of interesting. But anyway, once again, a very extreme character. Obviously, AOC, a very extreme character. But if you go back 20 years, you know, back in the days of Clinton versus Bush, Al Gore. Yeah, he was an enviro nut. But really, these were boring people compared to what we’ve seen over the last decade. The last decade has been very entertaining politically.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, I would— I never really thought about it that way, but no, you are correct. I mean, yeah, there was a few scuttles and different things back in the day, you know, Tip O’Neill and some of those guys and so on. But all in all, they were actually fairly, quote-unquote, normal people, Andy.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, yeah. I mean, if you wanted one of the best for quotes of all time, of course, that was Reagan.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right.
SPEAKER 04 :
He was a quote machine, but, you know, he wasn’t— Trump has almost a touch of the crazy to him. He’s so outlandish. And I love it. I think he’s a phenomenal president.
SPEAKER 07 :
The difference with Trump and everybody else is he knows what eye to poke and when. Yeah. Because a lot of what he does—and people don’t realize this—but a lot of what he does is literally poking others in the eye purposely to—in a lot of ways, by the way. People don’t really realize this, but— He does that, in my opinion, in my view, he does that so that, you know, it’s like sleight of hand. I’m going to poke you in the eye over here, and you’re going to be recovering from that, and I’m going to go do this over here really quick while you’re not paying attention. That’s what he does a lot of.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, he’s trolling you.
SPEAKER 07 :
Correct.
SPEAKER 04 :
He’s trolling you while he is doing something else over here.
SPEAKER 07 :
That’s right. And very purposeful in what he’s doing, I mean. Oh, totally. Most of the left think he’s just off his rocker.
SPEAKER 04 :
They think he’s serious.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, just says things at times because he doesn’t know any better. Oh, no, it’s all calculated.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, yeah, the latest one is hilarious. They think he’s running in 2028. He has no intention of running in 2028. He knows that. We know that. And yet he’s trolling them.
SPEAKER 07 :
That’s because he knows they’ll eat it up.
SPEAKER 04 :
Because they’ll eat it up. You know, another thing about him is he’s very real. Here’s what I mean. You’ve been to sports bars, right? Sure. Buffalo, Wild Wings.
SPEAKER 07 :
Because I don’t subscribe to TV, so if I want to watch something, I have to go someplace.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. You’ve got a few games on the screen. Correct. Okay. For a minute, don’t look at the screens. Look at all the people around you in the bar there. Trump could be one of them.
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER 04 :
Reagan couldn’t. Absolutely. Reagan couldn’t. Clinton couldn’t. No, most presidents couldn’t. Bush couldn’t. Neither Bush. Obama couldn’t have been one of them. Are you kidding? He’s an uppity professor. I mean, you look at these guys. Biden couldn’t. None of these guys could. Trump looks like one of them.
SPEAKER 07 :
So does Vance. Vance is a more intellectual Trump. He is, but he can hang out there very easily. He can. Because he knows people. He’d hang out no problem. Right. It wouldn’t be an issue for him. Al Gore, could you imagine Al Gore in a sports bar? No. Thank you. That’s my point.
SPEAKER 04 :
And by the way, I love Marco Rubio. I couldn’t imagine him there at all.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, that would be a little tougher.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, he’s just this ultra smooth speaker.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, him and Ted Cruz, yeah, probably wouldn’t see them there.
SPEAKER 04 :
No.
SPEAKER 07 :
Just saying. Fetterman, yes. Fetterman all day long because that’s where he lives.
SPEAKER 1 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
I could see Fetterman and Trump at the same bar watching the same game.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, and enjoying it. Yeah, totally. And really, they’re not that different, to be honest with you. Fetterman needs to switch parties.
SPEAKER 05 :
He does.
SPEAKER 07 :
That’s another conversation for another day. And you kind of wonder with him, is he sticking with it, again, just to poke those guys in the eye? Yeah. In other words, not switching parties just so he can poke his own party in the eye.
SPEAKER 04 :
But also on opposite sides, the three-letter girls are the same. AOC and MTG, they’re the same.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. In their own ways. They are. They are in a lot of ways. You’re right. They’re cuckoos. I’m sorry. They’re cuckoo.
SPEAKER 04 :
Just outlandish. They are.
SPEAKER 07 :
They’re cuckoos. And I get it. MTG’s on our side. But is she?
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, look, on about 90% of the issues, yes.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, but it’s that 10% where she just goes off the rails and it just makes us all look like dummies. I’m sorry, but she does.
SPEAKER 04 :
Her stuff talking about Israel, she should be on the X-Files.
SPEAKER 07 :
She’s just a wackadoodle, Andy. And now she’s waffling on the continuing resolution and all the things regarding that. She’s a wackadoodle, Andy.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, she’s waffling on the border, immigration, all this stuff.
SPEAKER 07 :
It’s just like, are you kidding me? What happened to you? Did you have a lobotomy someplace along the line here? What’s gone on with you, Marjorie?
SPEAKER 04 :
I don’t know, but once again, it’s entertaining.
SPEAKER 07 :
You’ve got to admit, it’s very entertaining. No, I can’t argue that. It definitely is. I mean, again, and I know this week we’ll talk about some of that. Really quick, the continuing resolution, talking about that. I heard somebody today say, well, I think it’s about 10. I’m like, well, I haven’t really heard that yet. I think we’re still five short on, you know, need five Democrats basically to switch over to get this thing ended. I had heard it might be down to just three, but either way, it’s still going on.
SPEAKER 05 :
Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
They’re not there yet.
SPEAKER 05 :
No.
SPEAKER 07 :
And their party, you hear some of the quotes. I read this today. You look at some of the quotes from some of the folk like AOC and Bernie and so on, where it’s like, well, it’s the only thing we have left, and we’ve got to stand our ground, and if we do this, we lose everything, and on and on and on. It’s like, you people are nuts.
SPEAKER 04 :
That’s bad messaging, because at that point, you’re telling Americans, you are my leverage.
SPEAKER 07 :
You don’t matter.
SPEAKER 04 :
I need your pain for my leverage.
SPEAKER 07 :
Your life, your plight doesn’t matter to me.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, and I’ve seen both sides.
SPEAKER 07 :
I’m going to use you as a tool.
SPEAKER 04 :
I’ve seen both sides do that one in the past. It never sells. I don’t know why they’re using it.
SPEAKER 07 :
I know we can talk about this next week on Andy, but I personally, people always ask me outside of the show, they’ll ask me, what do you think about all this? Is it going to help or hurt conservatives when it’s all said and done? I’m like, currently, right now, the way the Democrats are playing this, yeah, there’s the hardcore lefties that believe every single thing they say, but everybody else is looking at this like, you guys are knuckleheads.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, on balance. Now, it hurts both sides because people start just getting angry at Washington.
SPEAKER 07 :
They get mad at government.
SPEAKER 04 :

Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560.
