HR1 Andy’s 5-Star Movie Reviews: Gabby’s Doll House: The Movie and Dead of Winter. 9-26-25 by John Rush
SPEAKER 05 :
It’s finally Friday on Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush. So I tell him I’m a pro jack. And who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama himself. So we finish 18 and he’s going to sniff me. And I say, hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know. And he says, oh, it won’t be any money. But when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness. So I got that going. And movie reviews with Andy Payne.
SPEAKER 12 :
I think that you got the wrong impression about me. I think in all fairness, I should explain to you exactly what it is that I do.
SPEAKER 08 :
What I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.
SPEAKER 17 :
Chief Mayne, what do you want to do tonight?
SPEAKER 02 :
The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world. Stick a fork in me, Jerry.
SPEAKER 05 :
I’m done.
SPEAKER 18 :
Now, here is your host of Rush to Reason, John Rush.
SPEAKER 15 :
All right, happy Friday. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Thank you all for listening to us today. Andy Pate with me today. We’ve also got another special guest. Yes, we do. He’s been with you before. Many times. Never me, though. Tanner’s here with us. Tanner Coleman. Tanner Cole, man.
SPEAKER 18 :
That’s right.
SPEAKER 15 :
Tanner Cole, man. All right, and Charlie, of course, our engineer.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 15 :
So what do we got in store for us today, Andy?
SPEAKER 18 :
We got a couple movies. Gabby’s Dollhouse, the movie. John, I know you’ve been looking forward to that one for the last, what is it, five, six years now?
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, yeah, definitely, definitely.
SPEAKER 18 :
I know, I know. Folks, it’s been embarrassing. Every time I come in, John is like, is this the week? Well, John, this is the week.
SPEAKER 15 :
This is it.
SPEAKER 18 :
And the second movie is Dead of Winter.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay, are they both horror movies?
SPEAKER 18 :
No. Okay. Well, for you? Maybe. Yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
Maybe.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, Dead of Winter isn’t a horror movie. It’s a murder thriller.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay. All right. So, not my favorite. I don’t know. Maybe? Yeah, you might like this one. We’ll find out. Yeah. I can do, I’m just not, as you know, I’m okay. I’m just not a slasher guy. Yeah, you don’t do slasher movies. I don’t do slasher flicks anymore. I did when I was a kid, but I haven’t done one of those in a long time.
SPEAKER 18 :
Except Scary Movie.
SPEAKER 15 :
That one’s hilarious, though. That was hilarious. That’s like Not Another Teen Movie. I mean, it makes fun of every other movie.
SPEAKER 18 :
I know, it’s so great.
SPEAKER 15 :
Then they’re funny. I love it. That’s a whole different thing, yeah.
SPEAKER 18 :
I’ve seen Scary Movie and Not Another Teen Movie too many times, John.
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, man. Almost where you, like, memorized it.
SPEAKER 18 :
I know. They’re so funny. All right.
SPEAKER 15 :
And then what are we doing second hour? We’re doing picks because Richard’s on vacation. That’s why Tanner’s here.
SPEAKER 18 :
That’s why Tanner is here. Tanner’s a fill-in for Richard. Now, the standard is high, Tanner.
SPEAKER 15 :
Personally, I don’t think you’re up to it. I told Tanner this yesterday because I didn’t, you know, originally I wasn’t sure whether he was going to be able to help, not help, whatever. So I thought, well, if I’m going to fill in for the NFL pick end of things, I cheated.
SPEAKER 1 :
You did? Yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
I did. I used AI. And I gave Tanner yesterday some of the AI answers on the pics. He’s like, oh, those are pretty good. When we get there, I’ll read a couple for you. Okay. They’re pretty good, actually. It wasn’t half bad. They were right last night.
SPEAKER 18 :
That’ll be worthwhile. That’ll be at the top of our two.
SPEAKER 15 :
Because I’ll let you guys do it, but I’ll read you a couple of what it said. It’s pretty fun, actually.
SPEAKER 18 :
You know, John, pretty soon you’re going to be doing the entire show with AI.
SPEAKER 15 :
I’m hoping.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, I can tell.
SPEAKER 15 :
I’m working towards that.
SPEAKER 18 :
And for the movie topic for Hour 2, we’re going to do murder mysteries.
SPEAKER 15 :
Because of? One of these is one, right? Dead of Winter. Okay, perfect.
SPEAKER 18 :
Because of Gabby’s Dollhouse, of course.
SPEAKER 15 :
All right, so be ready to text your favorite murder romance movie, whatever mystery. Murder mystery is what I should say. Not romance, but murder mystery. Some of them could be romances, but murder mystery.
SPEAKER 18 :
Any movie where someone gets offed and you’ve got to figure out who did it.
SPEAKER 15 :
The whodunits.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, that’s it.

Suck it up, buttercup. Back to Rush to Reason. And welcome back to Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560, John Rush, together with Andy Pate and Tanner Cole.
SPEAKER 03 :
Man.
SPEAKER 18 :
And Tanner. What’s up? Buddy, I got a question for you. It’s kind of personal.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, what’s going on?
SPEAKER 18 :
Are you ready for a movie?
SPEAKER 03 :
I’m ready for a movie.
SPEAKER 18 :
All right, Tanner, you know, it’s been a while since we’ve had a kid’s film.
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh.
SPEAKER 18 :
We haven’t done one of those in quite a while, have we, John?
SPEAKER 15 :
No, we haven’t.
SPEAKER 18 :
So how about a little kid’s film? Let’s watch Gabby’s Dollhouse, the movie.
SPEAKER 01 :
Do you want to come to Cap Francisco? Do it. We’re here. The tall house.
SPEAKER 07 :
Not overdramatic. I think we’re moving. Everyone, lean left.
SPEAKER 12 :
The other left, baby box.
SPEAKER 07 :
I’m learning so much today. No! Time to get tiny. Let’s get this dollhouse back. Oh, this is awesome. My hair. My tushy. My fashion. Oh, wait. Kitty scratched that. I look fabulous. I have a feeling we’re going to need backup. What’s wrong? This is a dollhouse problem. Looks like Cakey got fakey.
SPEAKER 18 :
And that is Gabby’s Dollhouse. Tanner, what do you think? Does that sound exciting?
SPEAKER 03 :
I don’t even know what to say. My jaw was dropped watching that whole preview. You sure it was. I know it was.
SPEAKER 18 :
Okay, well, Gabby’s Dollhouse is a Netflix kids show, okay, where many things are shaped like kitties. It’s really cute. Gabby, she’s played by Layla Lockhart Cranor. She has a dollhouse. And when she pinches the cat ears on her headband, she shrinks down in animation form so she can play in it. And she does songs and dancing. It’s very cute. The show is very interactive, doing crafts with kids and with the help of the Gabby cats. I know what you’re wondering. Who are the Gabby cats, right, Tanner?
SPEAKER 03 :
Oh, definitely.
SPEAKER 18 :
Exactly. Okay, well, let’s see. Here are a few. Mercat, Kitty Cat, Cat Rat, Pillow Cat, and Gabby’s best friend, Pandy Paws. But now full-size Gabby must go to Cat Francisco with her grandmother.
SPEAKER 15 :
Cat Francisco?
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah. You know, they should have done, I don’t know, they should have done Catlanta, Kittyapolis. What do you think? Okay, Cat Francisco. I hope they weren’t walking on the streets. It’s not too safe there. But anyway, they go to Cat Francisco.
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, they’re used to feces, so they work well.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, I guess so. They should have had the entire city be a litter box. Sorry.
SPEAKER 04 :
That would have been pretty good.
SPEAKER 18 :
Anyway, she’s with her grandma, Gigi, who’s played by Gloria Estefan.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh. Oh. Okay.
SPEAKER 18 :
Did a nice job, by the way.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 18 :
And she has her dollhouse in tow. But it becomes unhitched. Oh, no. It winds up purchased by wealthy Vera the Cat Lady, played by Kristen Wieg. And she wants to add it to her kitty collection. Oh, no. Can Gabby rescue the Gabby cats? Along the way, Gabby meets Chumsley. He’s played by Jason Matsoukas. Have you heard of him?
SPEAKER 03 :
I don’t think so.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, he does a lot of comedy voices. He’s actually very good. He’s a stuffed cat whom Vera tossed aside as she outgrew him as a child. Chumsley misses Vera. Well, another problem arises. There are more forces wanting the dollhouse. Kitty Rangers 1, 2, and 3, they were going to buy the dollhouse before Vera beat them to it. They’re like Girl Scouts, selling Kitty Ranger cookies and stuff like that. Well, live action and cartoon adventure roll into one as Gabby tries to rescue her friends. And that’s the story of Gabby’s Dollhouse. What do you think, Tanner?
SPEAKER 03 :
I think John and I are going to go see it together. Yeah, we’re going tonight after the show.
SPEAKER 18 :
Would you two do me a favor when you enter the theater, hold hands and skip?
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, we’ll be sure to do that.
SPEAKER 18 :
I got my kitty ears ready.
SPEAKER 15 :
Just so you know, that’s the way to do it. That’s an image I don’t need in my head.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yes, it is. What works in Gabby’s dollhouse? Well, there are always three big questions with kids’ movies these days. Right. Number one, will kids like it? That’s the biggie. Okay. Okay. No. They were pouting when they said your name, John. I didn’t understand that. It seemed kind of harsh. But anyway, they really enjoy Gabby. She’s interactive. And kids in the audience actually get to sing, dance, and shout. Everything they normally can’t do in a theater. Yay! It was great. We all got to dance. I did the Trump dance. Yeah, I was really good at it, too. A lot of people then everybody started doing it and some parents got angry. There’s a larger message of adults leaving childhood behind. Exhausted parents, I think, are going to probably like this message. And it encourages kids of all ages to keep the magic as they grow up. Now, here’s a biggie. No woke messaging. Even with, you know, Gabby and Gigi, they’re Hispanic. No biggie. They didn’t have ice. Raid the dollhouse.
SPEAKER 04 :
Nothing like that happened.
SPEAKER 18 :
There was no woke messaging at all. This is totally harmless, folks. You can bring your grandkids to it. I will say this. It’s for granddaughters. OK, it’s for the girls. It really is. But it’s totally safe. They’re not going to be mesmerized into hating America or burning flags or anything weird. It is totally safe and really a lot of fun. Layla Cranor and Kristen Wiig, they embrace their roles. Wiig, I’ve come to believe, can do anything. I mean, she is just really funny. You remember her in Anchorman, too? She was a love interest. Yeah, she is just a really funny actress and pulls it off here, too. Cartoonistry in this movie is simple but fun for little kids. But there are also some impressive moments. This surprised me because you had a lot of the really simple-looking cartoonistry and then suddenly a big, beautiful scene that they put right in out of nowhere. I like that, and I think it was good for the kids and it was easy for them to follow. Finally… Great message about becoming adults. It’s fine to grow up, but don’t stop playing. I like that. Okay. Now, what doesn’t work in Gabby’s Dollhouse? Well, far too many characters and subplots. There were. And that’s boring for adults.
SPEAKER 15 :
For kids, that’s tough.
SPEAKER 18 :
Well, and that’s what I was getting to. It’s boring for adults, but it’s also difficult for kids, John. Kids want to focus on one little set of characters, like in Cars or Toy Story or Bolt, right? Bolt had what? You had the main characters and then a few side characters like the pigeons. Just a few things worked in little by little, but nothing too much. Here, they work in the side characters too much. It’s distracting. This needlessly adds gnomes, the kitty rangers. There’s too many side stories. It lacks focus. There are some dumb sequences. I mean, obviously, okay, you’re probably thinking, they’re all dumb. No, no, I mean… Dumb within… I would never say that. Dumb within this genre, okay? Like Vera competing with her cat pal in yoga poses. It was really weak. I think Kristen Wiig just really wanted to do the scene. An editor needs to look at Kristen and say, Kristen… This is boring for kids. It’s not going to work. Don’t do it. We’re not going to use it. At the bottom line, this needed editing. They should have cut 15 minutes at least, and that would have made it even better for kids. It wasn’t that long. It was about an hour 37. So a little over an hour and a half. They should have wrapped this up in 120. Okay. In my opinion, I think they would have had a tighter film. It would have been excellent. But this was still solid. Okay. Rotten Tomatoes. They gave Gabby’s Dollhouse. I haven’t seen the latest numbers, but at the time it was 75%. Okay, that’s a good score. You know what? I agree with that score. Quality, three and a half stars. This is really good for little girls. I mean, it’s really good for little girls. And the girls who were in there were ages like two to, I don’t know, about eight or nine. And they were all having a lot of fun and doing the dances and stuff. And now they all know how to do the Trump dance. I think that’s important. Political, three. More religious, four. A very good moral. I loved it. And once again, didn’t preach any woke nutsiness to your kids. Do I recommend taking your little girls to Gabby’s Dollhouse, the movie? Yes, I do. I believe it’s made for them. I would say the top age, though, for me, in my opinion, would be six or seven.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 18 :
There you go.

SPEAKER 09 :
The best export we have is common sense. You’re listening to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 18 :
And welcome back to Rush to Reason. Denver’s Afternoon Rush. KLZ 560. John Rush. Together with Tanner Cole. Man. And Andy Pate. And John. Are you ready for another movie? This one looks pretty good, actually. Okay, well, John, in the frozen wasteland of northern Minnesota.
SPEAKER 15 :
Of course.
SPEAKER 18 :
We get a murder thriller in Dead of Winter.
SPEAKER 08 :
Tie that again, and you’re dead.
SPEAKER 05 :
Hello? Anyone out there? It’s an emergency. There’s been a kidnapping. Anyone? Hello? Oh, hey there.
SPEAKER 08 :
What are you doing up here?
SPEAKER 05 :
Just a little fishing.
SPEAKER 08 :
By yourself?
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah. See, you wouldn’t happen to know where Lake Hildar is, would you?
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. Just back over the hill here.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. Well, stay warm.
SPEAKER 11 :
What did she want?
SPEAKER 08 :
I gave her directions to the lake.
SPEAKER 11 :
Honey, do you stop being so nice to people?
SPEAKER 07 :
You hurt. I’m not leaving you.
SPEAKER 18 :
That is Dead of Winter. Now, I know you’re thinking it stars Dan Muir. Yeah. Because he’s up in Minnesota. Yeah. But I want you to know, no Dan Muirs were harmed in the making of this movie.
SPEAKER 15 :
Good thing.
SPEAKER 18 :
I’m very happy about that. Okay. Emma Thompson. Do you like Emma Thompson? I love Emma Thompson. By the way, she produced this as well. Oh, okay. Yeah. She stars as Barb, a recently widowed woman in her 60s. Now, she runs her bait and tackle shop she built with her husband, whom she loved dearly. His name was Carl. Now, Barb is quietly taking his ashes to scatter them at a lake where she had her first date with him. But she encounters a man chopping wood outside a cabin. The credits call him Camo Jacket. They don’t give him a name, right? Just Camo Jacket. He’s played by Mark Menchaca. There’s blood in the snow. Just a deer, he mutters. Deer. And she’s like, okay. I mean, that’s believable up there, so why not? Barb goes on her way, but later hears gunfire and sees the man dragging a young woman back home in the woods. That’s not good. Okay, there’s too much going on here, so now Barb investigates. Well, it turns out the man is married to a woman, Purple Lady, we call her.
SPEAKER 15 :
Purple Lady.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yes, and she’s played by Judy Greer. Do you know her?
SPEAKER 15 :
Not really.
SPEAKER 18 :
You would know her face. She’s been in a lot of stuff, but she always plays comedic characters.
SPEAKER 15 :
Not here, trust me.
SPEAKER 18 :
Okay. Well, this is the real boss of the situation is Purple Lady. Purple Lady bosses Camel Jacket around mercilessly, and it’s clear the two of them have the young woman, Leah, as a hostage with nefarious plans. Okay. So now we have Barb, a Northwoods woman. And she’s trying to survive because these two, well, let me put it this way. They’re in a makeshift cabin, okay? Sorry, you’re talking cabin in the woods, right? Yikes. But she has to find some way to get this kid out of there, but she has no weapons or fight training. And she’s wanting to rescue this young woman from Lord knows what. Well, Barb’s main opponent is Purple Lady, who’s intelligent, ruthless, and highly focused. There are a couple hunters who come by as well. And Purple Lady has camo jacket. But this is a cat and mouse game, really, between the brilliant psychotic and an old woman with no cell service missing her husband. What can Barb do in The Dead of Winter? What do you think, John?
SPEAKER 15 :
Sounds good. The previews look good.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, they do. Well, what works in Dead of Winter? Naturally, the acting is outstanding. I mean, just outstanding all around. Perfect in every way. Thompson and Greer play totally different characters from anything I’ve seen them do before, and they each nail it. Greer, for instance, she provides such an excellent villain. So calculating, so evil. No conscience at all. It was really something to watch her in this role. And I was shocked at how Thompson… I wish I had a way to convey this, John. How she groaned and suffered through falls and injuries. I mean, rarely have I ever seen age shown so honestly in a thriller like this. I felt her agony every step of the way. There’s a scene with her, I’ll just say, sewing up, which is really something, okay? You are going to feel the cold. You are going to feel the reality of it. You are going to feel every creak. every pain that she goes through in what she’s trying to do. Now it was also amazing to see how she never gave up and would do anything to stop evil. I loved it. The pacing is just right. Slow enough to allow for Barb to remember earlier times with Carl, her late husband. It’s slow enough to show the gray cold or the elements, but it’s fast enough to move the story, jump the plot and bring the action. It’s only an hour 38. Yeah. It’s not too bad, right?
SPEAKER 04 :
Right.
SPEAKER 18 :
Well, Laurel Marsden does a good job as Leah, the young woman who’s kidnapped. She’s terrified and it shows. It’s not her fault she’s up against someone so formidable. The kills and action are well staged and brutal. It’s well done. And here’s something not preachy at all. Here we go again. Zero agenda. Zero agenda. You’ve got a very impressive ending with impressive visuals. I’ll just leave it at that. Now, what doesn’t work in Dead of Winter? Because right now you’re listening to this thinking, man, I’ve got to see this movie.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, sounds good.
SPEAKER 18 :
I mean, this sounds great. Well, the worst killer in a murder thriller is implausibility. Okay? I need to believe each step in the story. This could happen. That could happen. So could this. You can surprise me, but keep it real. Okay. Well, Dead of Winter has a couple big implausible moments. And I did talk to some other people who watched the movie afterward, and they said the exact same thing. No way. Okay. And a couple of these. Two hunters really do something dumb. Barb allows something dumb with a car. I mean, look, these people were acting like they were making teens in a slasher flick look smart. Got it. With some of these choices they were doing. So this is a thumbs-up movie, but with a real, hey.
SPEAKER 15 :
Just make sure you’re aware of that.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, you’re watching this and you’re going, they’re not really going to, no. Okay, they’re doing it. All right, then. All right.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 18 :
John, how many hunters have you known? Tons, right?
SPEAKER 04 :
A lot, yeah.
SPEAKER 18 :
How many would open themselves up? to gunfire from a known threat?
SPEAKER 15 :
None.
SPEAKER 18 :
None. Okay. I’ll leave it at that. Okay. Rotten Tomatoes gave this 76%. I am going to give it, just like Gabby’s Dollhouse, 3.5 stars. 3.5 stars. Don’t let the implausibility keep you from seeing some incredible acting and a good story. This is… A well-made movie. It has a great look to it. You’re going to feel these characters more than you feel most characters. You’ve got a great cat and mouse between the main two characters. It is a good movie. I enjoyed this movie. For me personally… The implausibility bugged me, but for me personally, this is at least a four star just for me.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right.
SPEAKER 18 :
But I’m going to go three and a half stars in general because of implausibility, political three moral religious. I’m going to go three and a half.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 18 :
Because I just thought I had a really good moral about her and her husband. Oh, And I really like that about remembering your husband, honoring your husband, you know, your spouse in that way. And I really liked it. Do I recommend going to Dead of Winter? Folks, I do. This is an unexpected little jewel in late September. I did not expect this. I enjoyed it. And Emma Thompson is a treasure. Go see her in Dead of Winter. I do believe it’s worth it. Just understand when you see some things that you’re like, eh, that wouldn’t happen, blow it off and enjoy the movie.
SPEAKER 15 :
There you go. As you know, there’s a lot of movies out there that you could kind of say that about. I get that.
SPEAKER 18 :
There are. There are. I just don’t want it in a thriller, right, in an action, you know, a tense, more tense thriller than action thriller, although there is action. I mean, this poor thing is she’s running her heart out. She’s doing everything she can.
SPEAKER 15 :
Again, the implausibility side of it. Why didn’t she have a weapon? I mean, you’re going to the middle of nowhere. You know you’re going to an area where not only strangers and things like that, but animals and so on. Why would you not go with a gun?
SPEAKER 18 :
Well, first of all, she doesn’t seem to be like a gunny, not anti-gunny at all. She’s just, you know, fishing is what she does. She’s just going up to a lake to scatter her husband’s ashes, you know, drill. She has to drill through the ice to do it.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right.
SPEAKER 18 :
And she’s going to scatter her. She doesn’t think she’s going to see anyone up there, John, because there is no one up there.
SPEAKER 15 :
Got it.
SPEAKER 18 :
Except maybe Dan Muir out in the forest.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right.
SPEAKER 18 :
Okay, you might run into him.
SPEAKER 15 :
So she’s not counting on encountering anything.
SPEAKER 18 :
No. No, not at all. This was totally surprising.
SPEAKER 15 :
So there maybe is some plausibility to that.
SPEAKER 18 :
It’s not too bad. Here is where the plausibility… outranks the implausibility for me. In so many of these kinds of movies where you have older stars like Liam Neeson, they make them able to move and do things like they’re almost 25. They don’t do that with her at all. I loved it. And you might think, oh man, that’s going to slow it down and make it boring. No, it made it more interesting. It was really neat watching this elderly woman have to struggle through doing this, doing whatever it took to rescue this young girl. And that felt incredibly real. So it was kind of weird having it feel incredibly real in just a couple moments. By the way, a couple little scenes. That’s all I’m talking about that really, you know.
SPEAKER 15 :
Other than that, not a big deal.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah. Other than that, no big deal. And if you let that slide, you’re going to have a lot of fun.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay. Okay. Good to know. I mean, the previews look really good, so.
SPEAKER 18 :
I thought so, too. So, yeah, I was actually, when I saw the previews, I was actually looking forward to this movie, and it did not disappoint. Dead of winter, it’s worth seeing.
SPEAKER 15 :

SPEAKER 15 :
Now back to Rush to Reason on KLZ 560. And we are back, Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Myself, Tanner Coleman, Andy Pate, Charlie Grimes, of course. All right, tomorrow you’re going to a big meeting that we’re having here in the Aurora because of, or we’re having in Aurora, it is the GOP’s, is it not annual? It’s just a state meeting they’re having, right?
SPEAKER 18 :
It’s annual, a state central committee meeting.
SPEAKER 15 :
And is this the same time every year? Is this something that is…
SPEAKER 18 :
I don’t know if it’s exactly the same time every year. I’m sorry. I forget.
SPEAKER 15 :
But a meeting you’ll be at.
SPEAKER 18 :
They have a couple big issues that they want to address.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, and we talked about this a little bit on Tuesday. They want to do the opt-out of the primary. Now, one thing I read today that some on one side are saying, and I wanted you to clarify for me, is they’re saying that we shouldn’t even be voting on the opt-out again because it was already done once before. So basically, why is it happening again? Give me some… Insight onto that.
SPEAKER 18 :
Well, actually, both sides are kind of saying that because one side, those who are in favor of the opt out say that they had a vote. Golly, I forget when quite a ways back saying that like 90 percent of those present. voted in favor the problem is is that it’s not of those present okay you have to have 75 of the total membership of the party okay i mean the total membership of the state central committee okay okay and that’s over 400 members and so you’ve got two or maybe is it five i forget the exact number but it is a lot of people you’ve got to have 75 of all of them not just those present And I think there’s some confusion where they say, well, they held a meeting, and the vast majority of those present, they had that. And therefore, that should be locked in. It wasn’t, and they’re upset about it. Now, on the other side, they say, we have voted on this before. We didn’t reach the quorum. We didn’t reach the amount that we needed. This should be a dead issue. Both sides saying we shouldn’t be voting on this, and yet we’re about to vote on this.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 18 :
And obviously, as you know, I am while I am against open primaries in principle, I think only Republicans should choose Republican candidates. I think that makes sense. I mean, you’re choosing candidates who are going to represent you and your party before the electorate. You should be able to choose who represents you. OK, I wear an R. I should be able to choose who, you know, represents me with an R. I get that. But the problem is the state voted in open primaries and a strong majority as a ballot measure. Yeah. As a ballot measure. This was not put through by any leaders. This was not put through by Jared Polis. This is put through by the voters. The voters said and with a heavy. I think a majority of unaffiliated voters said, we want to have open primaries. And I think you brought up a great reason why the other day. A lot of them feel disaffected. They still feel some allegiance to one of the two parties. But they left for other reasons. And they want to be involved.
SPEAKER 15 :
OK, so really quick, because this came from Rhino Watch, which I hate mentioning that name, but they talk about how, you know, Horn is trying to pretend that the state central committee has the option of voting against opting out of the disastrous open primary. It does not. More than 2000 delegates at the 2024 assembly and convention voted overwhelmingly more than 90 percent to direct the SEC to affirmatively opt out of the open primary system. This wasn’t a suggestion or an advisory note. It is binding. Is that true or not?
SPEAKER 18 :
That’s not true. There was no vote held there that was a binding vote to make us opt out of the vote. That’s why we’re holding votes specifically for the opt-out. I wasn’t there. I assume it was a statement of some sort.
SPEAKER 15 :
I mean, these people are crazy, so I’m not taking this with any kind of validity at all, but I thought I’d bring it up.
SPEAKER 18 :
Look, all I know, and, you know, I’d have to look into it in more detail. I’m afraid I have not. I apologize. But I do know that these people lie more than they breathe.
SPEAKER 15 :
Correct.
SPEAKER 18 :
And so, you know, I’m not going to believe what they say.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay, what about the attorney situation?
SPEAKER 18 :
Okay, the attorney situation is that the attorney right now for the state party is also, what’s her name?
SPEAKER 15 :
Brita’s.
SPEAKER 18 :
Brita’s personal attorney. And apparently this is a real problem, they say, because there’s a lawsuit against Brita and also against a number of other people. As you know, that lawsuit was brought by the Davidians beforehand. Brita was voted into power and said, I’m going to dismiss this. We don’t need this, obviously. And it is ridiculous. It was utterly ridiculous. And now what they’re saying is you can’t have a lawyer… representing you and representing the party at the same time. To which I say, why not? They’re both the same interest. It’s both in the interest of the state party to not be sued in this way, and it’s in the interest of BRITA to not be sued in this way. Now, if they had conflicting interests, that would be a problem. They don’t, so there’s no conflict of interest. And also, there’s another big problem. We paid, as you detailed before, tons of money Correct. Okay. I don’t know. Was he Williams’ personal lawyer? I don’t know that because he wouldn’t have had to be because Dave directed so much party money to the guy. Why would he have to hire him himself?
SPEAKER 04 :
Correct.
SPEAKER 18 :
And the guy represented Dave’s interests at every step of the way. In the name of representing the party, he represented Dave’s interests every step of the way. Okay, now do I have a problem with that? Actually, no, I don’t. That’s okay. I don’t like the way they wasted all that money on a lawyer. I don’t think there should have been any lawsuits. All of that set aside… Dave had a lawyer that represented the party’s interests that he simply linked to his. Brett is doing the same.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, and I’ve got to go back through for everybody listening, and I will at some point. I just have been so busy I haven’t had time. I’ll go back through some of the FEC reports and look at some of that. Oh, the amounts were staggering. No, I meant now, currently, where we’re at. I haven’t done any of that. I apologize. Normally, I do, but I haven’t had time to do that lately.
SPEAKER 18 :
Well, keep in mind, here’s the thing really quick here, John. The same side caused the lawsuits in both cases.
SPEAKER 15 :
Exactly.
SPEAKER 18 :
That I understand. Yeah. Right. The lawsuits that were being thrown out before were being led by Dave’s side.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, this is the pot calling the kettle black.
SPEAKER 18 :
Right. The lawsuits that Britta is fighting off were started by Dave’s side.
SPEAKER 15 :
Correct.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
Correct. I fully understand. Now, and I’ve said this before, and I’ll say this again today, as you guys are all going into this meeting tomorrow, and I know some of you are listening. If, in fact, it does pass, I don’t know that it will, but if, in fact, it does pass to opt out of the primaries, and I said this Tuesday, I’ll say it again, the party’s over. We’re done.
SPEAKER 18 :
I agree.
SPEAKER 15 :
You might as well just close up shop, call it good, because the GOP in Colorado is done at that point. There’s no sense doing anything else. We’re finished.
SPEAKER 18 :
Oh, yeah. I mean, first of all, I mean, there’s so many reasons why.
SPEAKER 15 :
This whole idea that because of open primaries we don’t have good candidates is absolute hogwash. That has nothing to do with it whatsoever. In fact, I will counter that, and Andy has many, many times. It’s because of open primaries that we actually have individuals like Gabe Evans that did win. Right. that are representing us in D.C., that are doing the things necessary, the Jeff Herds, which I know a lot of you don’t like, but I talked about that some yesterday. You know, you guys in your purity test and having no grace has to end. You ought to all go look in the mirror at some point in time and look at yourselves and understand what you’re actually doing when it’s all said and done. I talked about that in depth yesterday, Andy, on the program, but at the end of the day, reality is I would go as far as to say that the open primaries have actually helped us
SPEAKER 18 :
the gop not only in colorado but nationally because if you had it your way we wouldn’t have those same representatives today there’s absolutely no question that in 2024 the open primary really the primary okay and it happens to be open uh rescued the gop here in colorado there’s no question let’s just take a look at cd3 and i’ll leave it at that okay um who did jeff heard beat in the primary Ron Hanks.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right.
SPEAKER 18 :
Had he won, that would have been disastrous. Well, we would have lost. We would have lost. We have to keep in mind, that’s a very tough district that Lauren Boebert won by less than 1%.
SPEAKER 15 :
That’s right.
SPEAKER 18 :
Barely won. And she was going to lose again. That’s why she fled that district to go to CD4. That’s right. Ron Hanks, not only was Ron Hanks such a horrible candidate that the Democrat was pouring money into ads, big money, to help Ron Hanks in our primary. Right. I mean, think about that for a moment. That’s right. Tanner, that would be like the Chargers pouring money into getting the Broncos to play a worse quarterback.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay?
SPEAKER 18 :
I mean, seriously. But not only that, but Ron Hanks had nowhere near the funding. to be able to compete in that election against a democrat millionaire he would have gotten swamped and also ron hanks held a number of positions which whether or not i agree i actually agree with a number of them but the problem is that they are positions that could only possibly win in a deep red cd4 kind of district okay that’s just reality that’s the market you’re right okay So the open primary gave us Jeff Hurd. We have that seat. And as a result, we have a House majority for Donald Trump.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right. Absolutely. Which Andy and I have talked about many times. We would not have had you guys gotten your closed primaries prior to all of that.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah. Well, and actually not even a closed primary.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, they don’t want a primary at all. Just get rid of it.
SPEAKER 18 :
Right. They want it to go away. Yeah, and by the way, it’s right there on the state party website. If we do not have the open primary, if we opt out of it, we don’t get a closed primary.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right.
SPEAKER 18 :
And by the way, that’s a myth.
SPEAKER 15 :
You get caucus only.
SPEAKER 18 :
You get caucus and assembly.
SPEAKER 15 :
And assembly only. Yeah, I should say that. Sorry.
SPEAKER 18 :
You get caucus and assembly only. Right. Those are attended by less than 1% of Colorado Republicans. And they say, well, anybody can attend. Doesn’t matter who can. It matters who does. So you would use a system that 99% of Colorado Republicans have said we don’t want to go to. And you would say, that’s what we’re going to use to choose our candidates. In that, Ron Hanks would have won.
SPEAKER 15 :
All right. Question of the day. Yesterday’s, which U.S. president dedicated the Vietnam Memorial? That would be Ronald Reagan. Today’s impossible question. This comes from Jersey Joe, by the way. Which letter of the alphabet is never silent in the English language? Which letter of the alphabet is never silent in the English language? Any ideas? Charlie, do you know? By chance, Mr. Grammar Expert? Charlie does not know. I’m surprised at that.
SPEAKER 18 :
It’s never silent?
SPEAKER 15 :
It’s never silent. So some letters, you know, get sort of skipped over or they don’t get enunciated or whatever the case may be. This is the only letter in the language that doesn’t.
SPEAKER 18 :
K?
SPEAKER 15 :
No. Can I tell you, there’s lots of times K is silent.
SPEAKER 18 :
Okay. I don’t know. Q? I can say them all. How’s that?
SPEAKER 15 :
Guess this one, or not guess, but put this one into our Facebook. If you want our Facebook page, Rush to Reason, that’s where that’s at. If we have time later on during the program, I’ll give you the answer. By the way, I never would have guessed this, so if I didn’t have the answer in front of me, I wouldn’t have the foggiest idea. All right, we’ll be right back. Don’t go anywhere. Cup Creek Heating and Air Conditioning coming up next. I talked to Hunter today, by the way, and they’ve got, of course, their furnace tune-up special. SPEAKER 15 :
All right, some of you may be thinking, and I just asked Andy this, why did he not review One Battle After Another? Because it’s really big. They’re promoting it huge. You’ll see it even on some of your social media feeds and so on. And frankly, folks, all I had to do was watch the previews to know I’ll never watch it because it’s about as woke as it gets, Andy.
SPEAKER 18 :
Oh, yeah. It’s highly political, super-duper woke, left-wing, left-wing, left-wing. But that isn’t actually the biggest reason. For me, a lot of this is scheduling. It’s almost three hours long, and it overlaps.
SPEAKER 15 :
It knocks out everything else.
SPEAKER 18 :
Right. It overlapped with the other movies. I could not have reviewed other stuff. So that’s fine.
SPEAKER 15 :
And, again, that one’s pretty easy. That happens now and then. That one’s pretty easy to tell you what that movie’s all about because literally you can watch. They don’t disguise it. Watch the previews, and it’s as woke as woke can get.
SPEAKER 18 :
Look, you can see the message of that movie. Just watch the Oscars. Right. Okay? And you’re good. You’re good. You don’t have to watch the movie.
SPEAKER 03 :
That’s Leonardo’s, like, second woke movie in a row that’s supposed to be a cool action movie, but…
SPEAKER 15 :
It’s so woke. They’re no fun to watch.
SPEAKER 03 :
I’ve seen the preview like 10 times. I saw it last night while watching football, and I was like, this looks awful. I think it’ll have a semi-okay first week.
SPEAKER 15 :
The liberals will go see it the first week.
SPEAKER 18 :
Right. The Libby’s will go. They’ll pack in.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right.
SPEAKER 18 :
And then it’ll fall apart. That’s my prediction.
SPEAKER 15 :
Dow’s way up. Andy mentioned that a moment ago, too, for a lot of you that not to beat our own drum.
SPEAKER 18 :
But we must.
SPEAKER 15 :
But we’ve talked about this now for a while, Andy and I have, because there’s so many naysayers. One of them we talk to on a pretty routine basis. I love Jordan Goodman. We have a lot of fun with him. And I know some of you listening even at times struggle with Jordan. I don’t. I’ve been talking to Jordan now for so long that, believe it or not, he has actually moved to our side more than what some of you out there would ever have guessed. If you go back and listen to even some of his early shows that he did with me years and years and years ago. I mean, I’m talking almost a decade ago.
SPEAKER 18 :
He used to be totally green energy.
SPEAKER 15 :
He’s come way much over to our side than what he used to be.
SPEAKER 18 :
John, what were we telling people when the stock market was down around 38? Just wait.
SPEAKER 15 :
Wait. Just wait. Hold. Hold. Just wait.
SPEAKER 18 :
And now it’s over 46.
SPEAKER 15 :
It’s all going to be fine. Just wait.
SPEAKER 18 :
We made you money, folks.
SPEAKER 15 :
And again, Andy and I, by the way, would have even been more accurate faster if you could have got the Fed to do what they should have done prior to. last week and i know we keep saying that i sound like a broken record but the reality is it still isn’t enough they’ve got to get more done and if they will you’ll see because the one i talked about this yesterday and wednesday the one biggest sector that still is waiting for a little bit of a shot in the arm is the housing sector which is a huge sector huge section i should say of our economy because of all the sectors connected to That’s exactly right. We’ve got to give it a shot in the arm. It still hasn’t happened yet. It’s coming. It’s too late in coming. Andy, Tanner, both, you can blame that on the Fed. Because they’ve made it political. Jerome Powell has made it political. Everybody talks about it. It’s what cracks me about the left. Well, you know, you can’t push the Fed, and we need them to be separate. We need them to be independent. Then quit being so dang political, Jerome Powell. Yeah. If you if you want to be that way and you want to stay independent and you don’t want the White House interfering, then you know what? Then do your dang job in a nonpolitical way.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah. Look, I don’t like the idea of the president controlling the Fed.
SPEAKER 15 :
I don’t either.
SPEAKER 18 :
But the Fed right now is nothing but an activist against the president.
SPEAKER 15 :
They’re acting exactly the way you would expect some hardcore lefty to act against Trump.
SPEAKER 18 :
They just want Trump.
SPEAKER 15 :
That’s all they’re doing. And in turn, and for all of you listening, make sure you remember this. They’re all doing that off the backs of middle America. It’s not really hurting that even low end of the spectrum because they’re on government cheese and so on. So that part of it’s not as big of a deal. But those that are in the middle, especially, they’re the ones that are getting affected the most by what the Fed is doing. And really, those folks are even on the left that are in the middle in that middle section should be realizing this and frankly should be as mad at Jerome Powell as guys like I, Tanner and Andy are, because the reality is, yes, they’re affecting your paycheck. He’s affecting your paycheck on a regular basis and taking money out of your pocket when it’s all said and done. So be mad at him. Don’t be mad at Donald Trump. Our two is coming up next. We’ll have NFL picks to start with. This is Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 1 :
Thank you. The Rich Guy.
