It’s finally Friday on Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush. So I tell him I’m a pro jack. And who do you think they give you? The Dalai Lama himself. So we finish 18, and he’s going to sniff me. And I say, hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know? And he says, oh, it won’t be any money. But when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness. So I got that going on. and movie reviews with Andy Payne.
SPEAKER 17 :
I think you got the wrong impression about me. I think in all fairness, I should explain to you exactly what it is that I do.
SPEAKER 09 :
What I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.
SPEAKER 02 :
Chief Mayne, what do you want to do tonight?
SPEAKER 12 :
The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world. Stick a fork in me, Jerry. I’m done.
SPEAKER 09 :
Now, here is your host of Rush to Reason, John Rush.
SPEAKER 01 :
Filling in is Andy Pate, party of choice.
SPEAKER 04 :
And I’m your host, Andy Pate, filling in for John Rush for one more day. Charlie, is John back tomorrow? Yes, he is. John will be back tomorrow morning for both shows, so get ready for that. I’m sure he’s going to be able to tell us plenty about his trip and hopefully show us some pictures of cars. He’s going to a car show. When John goes to auto shows, they are fun. Okay, I mean.
SPEAKER 08 :
Life at the party or what?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, he’s dancing on tables. No, it’s just incredible cars and just really cool stuff. And I’m sure he’s going to be putting up, I asked him to put up some of the photos. on Rush to Reason. Joining me, of course, is Tanner Cole. Man. And Luke Cash. Man. And gentlemen, we are going to be doing movies today. We got a triple header of movies going today. We’ve got, let’s see here, Predator, Badlands. I’ve been looking forward to that. Sarah Zoyle and Nuremberg. Man, Hollywood’s putting out a lot this fall, aren’t they? Have you noticed the volume? It’s been a lot. It’s like every week, there’s like five new movies. I can’t see them all.
SPEAKER 07 :
I think last time we were on, you had three movies as well.
SPEAKER 04 :
I have done more triple features this year than I’ve ever done. It’s crazy. Okay, let’s do impossible question of the day. Here we go. From yesterday, which fabric is made from the flax plant? Come on. You guys weave a lot of fabric. I see you back there in your office.
SPEAKER 08 :
From flax?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
I don’t know.
SPEAKER 04 :
Plastic. No, actually, the answer is linen. Hmm. Linen is made from the flax plant. Now, you know, there we go. I know you looked at totally fascinated by that. Okay. Today’s impossible question. We’ll probably try to answer it at the end of the day. What is the Northern most capital city in the world?
SPEAKER 08 :
It’s gotta be like the most North. It’s gotta be somewhere in like Greenland, right?
SPEAKER 04 :
Come on. This is easy. Santa’s workshop. No, that’s not it. Foolish. I should have known. Uh, yeah, it might be in Greenland, but Greenland is actually a country. Okay, it’s actually, yeah, sort of a continent. Is Greenland a country or a continent?
SPEAKER 07 :
I thought it was big enough. I think it’s a country. Yeah, it’s one of those weird ones where it’s not really in a continent, but it’s not its own continent.
SPEAKER 04 :
Is it going to be like a county of America?
SPEAKER 07 :
I hope so.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
I’d love to visit.
SPEAKER 04 :
And if they really push, they can get statehood?
SPEAKER 07 :
I mean, it might not be such a bad state to move to with how crappy some of them are turning into.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, that would be great. Wouldn’t it be great if we could just move a few diehard Republicans to Greenland and make that the place to be? I think that’d be… We could actually have the free markets. Greenland is beautiful, just so you know.
SPEAKER 07 :
So is Iceland.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yes, it really is. Okay, let’s take a break. When we come back, I’ve got three movies to get into. We’ve got to do Predator Badlands. You guys like the Predator movies?
SPEAKER 08 :
I’ve enjoyed about half of them. Exactly. Haven’t they made like 10 of them?
SPEAKER 04 :
No, but they’ve been hit and miss. We’ll see if this one’s hit. Up next is Dr. Scott Faulkner. Hey, does it feel like doctors just manage pain but never fix anything? You ever kind of notice that? Gil, what was your experience like working with RoofMax?
SPEAKER 18 :
Very good. With Dave Hart, we right away connected. You know, he was a very nice person to talk to, very accommodating. He even came over to my location when I asked him that I couldn’t go to him. He came to me and he walked the roof and he said, Gary, there’s just a couple of minor repairs needed. A few shingles needed to be replaced. And that was the start of our, you know, my conversation to go with him. I said, well, give me a bid and we’ll go from there.
SPEAKER 07 :
That’s great to hear. And how long did the process take from your first call to the final treatment?
SPEAKER 18 :
Well, it was an excellent experience. They were very accommodating with my time. Dave was very willing to meet my needs. And so it gave me an idea of what it would take to repair it. It wasn’t very much. And so I think it was maybe he came over one day and then maybe two days afterwards and got it all done. All in one day. It was awesome.

SPEAKER 04 :
Mm-hmm. Pal? Are you ready for a movie? I’m ready for a movie! All right. Hey, that was good. That was good. What do you think, Luke? Is his manhood up to an eight?
SPEAKER 08 :
We’re getting there. We’re getting there, yeah. I’d do seven and a half. Let’s not push him. Okay, you’re right.
SPEAKER 07 :
I could do it in a Predator voice.
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, I don’t know. I’m ready for a movie.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, that’s not bad. That’s not bad. Well, speaking of Predator, it’s a battle to the death in Predator Badlands.
SPEAKER 14 :
So this is your first hunt.
SPEAKER 01 :
And you’ve come to the most dangerous planet in the universe. You’re after a creature that can’t be killed. The definitive apex predator. I could help you. Well, good luck with your journey. Here, you’re not the predator. You’re the prey.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right. Now that’s how Tanner feels every time he goes into a singles bar. It’s true. Women everywhere crawling all over him. Do you feel like prey? I mean, do you actually just run in fear?
SPEAKER 07 :
Most of the time I get out of there before I talk to any of them.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, that’s pretty wise. We just scare him. Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
Can’t trust him.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right, well, here we go. Deck, that’s the name of the character. The Halls. Deck the Halls. Well, we’re coming to that time of year, right? So Deck, okay. Deck. Now, he’s played by Demetrius Schuster Koloa Matanji. Quite a name, right?
SPEAKER 07 :
That is quite a name. Is he on the Supreme Court?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, he is. He’s actually on the Supreme Court. DSK, they call him. He’s the youngest member of the Yautja clan. That’s what predators are, it turns out. Yautja. His older brother wants to toughen him up so Deck can earn his cloak and achieve glory. Well, how do you do this as a predator? I mean, do you start a business?
SPEAKER 11 :
No.
SPEAKER 04 :
Donate time down at the mission? Heck no! You have to kill something that’s almost impossible to kill. Well, Deck is sent to Genna, a death planet, to hunt the Galisk, it’s called. It’s an unbeatable foe. Nobody can beat the Galisk. Well, while there, Deck runs into Thea. She’s played by Elle Fanning. Do you know her? She looked familiar. Yeah, well, she’s a synthetic woman. Well, half a synthetic woman at the time because she’s missing her legs. She’s been left there by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation of Aliens lore, which is interesting. So a little bit of a crossover there. Well, there’s a race to capture the beast, and it’s led by Thea’s sort of sister, Tessa, who’s also played by Fanning. All right. You kind of get in this idea. So you got two synthetics. One is still working with corporation. Thea has been stranded down on the planet and she is found there by deck. Moving forward. Well, as always, the evil corporation, they’re always evil in the movies, right? They want to capture a monster and weaponize it. I’m sorry, I’ve seen this so many times, right? But let’s be patient here. Oh, did I mention Deck’s dad wants to kill him? Yeah, I kind of left that out. There’s a reason for that. It seems dad must remove any weakness from his clan, and Deck is seen as too weak. He’s a little guy. He’s the runt of the litter. Still bigger than us, but he’s the runt of the litter. Maybe Deck is a closet peacenik hippie. I’m not sure. But Dad wants to kill him. Okay. Anyway, Ghana is a bad place, especially for a newbie. And I mean, this place is unreal. Plants strangle you with living vines and they paralyze you with venomous stingers. The grass is like sharp glass. And I mean really sharp, it’ll go right through you. Everything wants to kill and eat you. I mean, this is basically New York in two years, okay? This is a horrible place. Thea, she helps Deck as he’s in hostile territory, facing the horrifying Galisk, racing against Weyland-Yutani, and running from dear old Dad. Boy, it’s hard to be a team predator, isn’t it? Well, can Dex survive and bring justice? Or is this predator doomed in the Badlands? That’s the story of Predator Badlands. Badlands, sorry about that. What do you think, Tanner?
SPEAKER 07 :
It sounds fun. I would love to just be in one of these writer rooms and come up with these names. Tessa, obviously, you can come up with, but some of those other ones you said, I would love that.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. A lot of proper nouns. Luke, are you going to name your first child Deck? Nope. Okay, then. Here we go. What works in Predator Badlands? I got good news, guys. A lot does. Mm-hmm. All right. First of all, it’s got good pace with excellent action. Excellent action. The battles against the synthetics are as good as battling all the planet’s dangers. And by the way, battling the planet’s dangers. Wow. These plants shooting these vines at you that can grab you and eat you and do all these things. You’re thinking, I’ve seen stupid stuff like this. No, they do it better. Okay. It is very cool. And you are totally surrounded. It is really good. It’s good special effects. I enjoyed it. There were nice performances from Koloa Matanji and Fanning. They both did a really good job, especially, I’m just going to say, Elle Fanning knocked it out of the park with this. Because what they did with these synths, synthetics, is they gave them more personalities. All right. So they actually have personality. Why? So that they can relate to the creatures on the planet so that they can track down this creature. Because remember, the evil corporation wants to get this galisk and bring it back and weaponize it. So what they do is they give them actual personalities. So she has one, and it’s very funny. Just very enjoyable. Okay, next. Surprising chemistry and lightheartedness with Thea and the ape-like Bud. Little guy. Ape-like. All right? And Bud is a lot of fun. You have moments of humor and caring that break up the relentless battles, which is a good thing because the battles are very intense. One thing I really enjoyed about this is you had a small group. Because really, this centers around the three of them. This centers around Dexia and Bud. And by having a small group, you can get that chemistry going. It’s not like one of these films where you’ve got a group of 10, 20, where it’s really difficult. Have you seen these?
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, I know what you’re talking about.
SPEAKER 04 :
Where all you’re doing is watching a bunch of CGI battles, and you’re like, halfway through, man, am I bored. Yeah. Not here. Not here. You actually enjoy watching the chemistry go between these three characters. Very good. Next, exploring Predator lore from their perspective. It’s pretty interesting. I thought it’d be boring, but it was actually pretty good. There was good, good CGI and special effects. Better than I expected. A good soundtrack. I always like that for one of these movies. Best Predator movie I’ve seen since the one with Arnie. Wow. I’m just going to say it right out. Nice message on forming your own clan, your own family. Okay. Your family isn’t necessarily the one that made you. It’s the one you choose.
SPEAKER 07 :
Or that adopts you.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. Or that adopts you. And by the way, that’s very true. This movie has that going on. It’s very cool. Okay. What doesn’t work in Predator Badlands? Well, you know, it’s got a pretty good script. It really does. But it could have been better. Even more humor would fully achieve the feeling we got from, remember Bill Pullman in Aliens? Yes. He was hilarious, right? He was fantastic. Nothing knocked it out of the park like that, although Elle Fanning did come close. She was funny. Very funny. The usually solid pace, well, it slowed a bit in the middle. It really did. It needed just a little more editing. I think if they had clipped, say, 10 minutes out of this, this thing would have been tight and rocking. Still good. All right. And finally, some of the early battles, they were a little confusing. It was hard to know which Yelcha is whom. Right. Because we can’t really tell them apart. I mean, the only thing we know is this one’s shorter. But when they’re going back and forth at each other, it’s kind of hard to tell. Right. This is one of the problems with some of these movies where there’s a lot of gray. These characters are gray. Those characters are gray. Everything’s gray. And you’re kind of wondering what is actually happening there. It’s not that bad. For the most part, you can follow it, but it’s not perfect. So there’s the downside. OK. Rotten Tomatoes gave this 86%. Audiences, last I saw, had it around 95. Wow. Okay. I’m not going to go that high. Quality, I’m going to give it four stars, which, by the way, is exactly what I gave Aliens Romulus, which was the most recent Aliens. And what was interesting with both those movies, I was saying this before the show, you guys remember, is with Alien Romulus and Predator Badlands, I was trying to see, okay, these are two… series that have really gone downhill, right? They’ve gotten a little silly. They’ve gotten long, drawn out, bad. Predator had gotten ridiculous. Are you going to revive it? Are you going to revive the series? Are you going to make us want to see these again? In both cases, yes, they did. Alien Romulus is definitely worth seeing. That’s a four-star movie. Not phenomenal, but very good. This is a four-star movie. I laughed a lot. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the characters. I was actually engaged. I wanted to see it. I wanted to see how it ended. It was good. It did move on a little bit longer than it should have, but it was worth it. It had a good payoff. So, quality four stars. Political, three stars. Moral and religious, three stars. No preaching. I like that, don’t you?
SPEAKER 08 :
Mm-hmm. We’ll take it.
SPEAKER 04 :
I mean, I don’t want to convert to whatever the Yautja religion is. And there isn’t one.
SPEAKER 08 :
No, you don’t want to be cast into the Rocky Mountains with only your bare hands and told to go fight a grizzly.
SPEAKER 04 :
How’d you know what I’m doing this weekend? Every weekend, my wife has something for me to do to prove myself to her, and that’s what I’m actually doing. Has she talked to you? It’s going to be really hard, too. She’s actually laying money against me. That’s not good. Okay. Actually, Predator Badlands, folks, do I recommend going to it? Yes, I do. This is a fun action movie. I will say this. Obviously, it’s got some gross killing. Because it’s Predator or Aliens. I’m going to have some gross killing. I got it. It’s worth it. It’s worth it. This is a fun movie. Is it a great movie? No, but it’s a good one. And I do hope we see more of this good going into the holiday season. Let’s take a break. SPEAKER 04 :
You know what?
SPEAKER 08 :
I got another question for you.
SPEAKER 04 :
Are you ready for a movie?
SPEAKER 08 :
As ready as I can be. I’m so tired.
SPEAKER 04 :
Folks, Luke has been working sick. Amount of hours. Now, Tanner never works. He sits here and just collects a check. Whittles my thumbs, yeah. It’s amazing. How’d you get that? I don’t know. Hard work. That’s great. Tanner does these videos. Nepotism. He complains. He’s complaining about having to do 20 hours a week for his food stamps. It’s really great.
SPEAKER 08 :
No, I watched him put in a formal request for four-ply in the bathroom.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, okay.
SPEAKER 05 :
diva you’re a diva okay here we go uh can a black girl in the old south get rich striking oil let’s find out in sarah’s oil my name’s sarah rector the state gave me 160 acres on account of my ancestors and there’s a lot well how do you know that god gave me the ears to hear it do you hear it blue There’s oceans down there. Nobody but you, Lord. I got oil on my land, and I’m looking for a partner to help me drill it out.
SPEAKER 19 :
Bertson Byron Smith, at your service.
SPEAKER 08 :
I look for oil, and I drill for it.
SPEAKER 05 :
I was singing 50-50. We should have our lawyers meet.
SPEAKER 08 :
That’s my lawyer, the Texas Handshake. There ain’t nothing more binding.
SPEAKER 05 :
We’re in Oklahoma. It goes double for Okies. Here we go.
SPEAKER 11 :
Nobody but you, Lord.
SPEAKER 16 :
What’s the damage? Well, this might be the end of the road.
SPEAKER 05 :
You kept it so easy!
SPEAKER 16 :
Well, she guessed. She’s gonna do the right thing.

SPEAKER 19 :
Got some real nice mud here. Hoping you might test it first.

SPEAKER 15 :

SPEAKER 15 :
You want a war? You’ve told me things about my soul.
SPEAKER 08 :
Ain’t nobody ever done that for me. Ain’t nobody ever cared.
SPEAKER 09 :
We’re dealing with some mighty devious folks over there.
SPEAKER 05 :
then you need to fight for what’s ours. Is that why I see dynamite? That’s my oil! No, it ain’t!
SPEAKER 08 :
I would not do that if I was you.
SPEAKER 02 :
We took the liberty of wiring up your wheels just in case you wanted to do something foolish.
SPEAKER 05 :
It’s funny. When the land had only weeds and lizards, it was all mine. But when people found out there was oil on it, they started thinking it’s theirs. All I’m asking is to keep what’s mine.
SPEAKER 02 :
Her name is Sarah Rector, and you’re going to be hearing a lot about her.
SPEAKER 08 :
All right, Luke, what do you think? Sounds very Hallmark-y. Yeah, it does. I don’t know. Not generic in a bad way, but that brand of feel-good, rise-above movies.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, actually, I think it does. It sounds generic Hallmark-y. Yeah. It really does. Well, here we go. At one point, this is a true story, after Oklahoma became a state, certain black people from certain backgrounds were given tracts of land, 160 acres, to start a new life. Now, this was under the Dawes Allotment Act of 1887. Just giving you a little history here. And this brings us the true story of Sarah Rector. Now, Sarah, played by Naya Desir Johnson, she receives 160 acres due to her black and Indian heritage. All right. Pretty cool. Sarah was well, she was much more educated than most people. She could read and speak eloquently. And as a Christian, she believed God gave her this land for a reason. While fighting through racism in the nearby town, Sarah and her parents got an oil company to start drilling on her land. But it didn’t go well, so they pulled out. They left the equipment, saying it was too expensive to even tear it down. And you can kind of understand seeing what they go through to put it in. Well, Sarah wasn’t deterred. Even though her parents, they wanted to sell the land off to pay off the taxes because those were coming due. Sarah pressed on to find someone to run the well. She was sure there’s oil there. Oceans of oil. Well, this brought in wildcatter Bert Smith, played by Zachary Levi. You guys like him?
SPEAKER 08 :
He sounds familiar. What else has he been in?
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, I don’t know. Shazam? Oh, yes. Yeah, stuff like that. Good guy. I like him. Well, he’s a guy who wasn’t racist, but was at the end of his rope. Okay, Burt was a con man who built women out of money to get by. But he was also a wildcatter. He would go out and try to get these rigs to work. And just a very interesting guy. I liked him. Okay. Well, there are many challenges. A ruthless oil company led by a guy named Devnan. He’s played by Garrett Dillahunt. He’s determined to get Sarah’s claim. There are also massive expenses for drilling, especially when setbacks occur. Which, by the way, my wife’s in the oil business, and I actually hear about some of these things. And it’s true. If something goes wrong in a rig… Oh, yeah. Now, obviously, this is modern rigs today, but even then, when something goes wrong in a rig, it doesn’t go wrong on the surface, okay? It goes wrong hundreds and thousands of feet down where it’s hard to get to. It’s incredibly expensive, all right? And they had to deal with these setbacks. And, of course, Bert is no angel. Well, against all odds, Sarah Rector fought hard to keep her land. Could she strike oil? And that is the story of Sarah’s Oil. What do you think?
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, like it sounds very kind of generic Hallmark-y. Like, not bad, not great either.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, that’s okay. I like Hallmark-y movies.
SPEAKER 08 :
They can be all right.
SPEAKER 04 :
Saturday afternoon, watch a little.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, relax to it. The mom in the movie is a great actress. I can’t remember what I’ve seen her in, but she’s good.
SPEAKER 04 :
She’s very good. Okay, what works in Sarah’s oil? Well, they’re solid acting all around, better than most recent Christian films. I like that. Levi, he really surprised me. Not only did he nail the accent, as you probably heard in the preview, but also he just displayed a lot more acting depth than you normally do. He normally does fairly comedic characters. This was a little more broad. I liked it. There’s a straight depiction of racism and greed in the old Southwest. No sugarcoating. And I like that, too. The storyline is easy to follow, though it does take some detours, I will say that. But it’s really easy to follow. You really know where you are every step of the way, and I need that. Okay, when I’m watching these historical dramas, you’ve got to keep me on the right page. This is a Christian-themed movie that anyone can watch. I like that, because you always wonder that with the Christian movies, right? Is it one that non-Christians feel really uncomfortable in, or is it one where they don’t at all? Here, not at all. OK, I mean, it’s not preachy. It’s just honest. She was a Christian. Her family was Christian. They were gospel Christians and they were very happy with it. And there you go. OK, what doesn’t work in Sarah’s oil? Well, there’s too many side characters and distractions. This was a problem. And that’s what brought some of the detours I was talking about. Nothing bad, just too many. All right. They could have edited out 15 minutes easily. There are a couple of characters and. This is a real problem with these historical dramas. They tend to leave everything in. It’s like, look, guys, I could read a book to get everything, okay? A couple of these characters really weren’t adding much to the flow of the story, and that means they were slowing it down. Not terrible, but just a little bit. The pacing is inconsistent. It speeds up, slows down several times, and it’s kind of noticeable. Zachary Levi’s character never seems to fully fit the film. OK, and don’t get me wrong. He’s central to the film. He’s very important. But, you know, he’s is he good guy, bad guy? It’s all very confusing. And at times you don’t stop caring. You’re just like, you know what? Let’s get back to Sarah. All right. No offense. It’s not like Zachary Levi did a bad job. He did a good job. It’s just like, I don’t care. Right. Right. Let’s get back. Okay. There are romantic possibilities with Bert and a couple of women in the film, but these seem to lead nowhere of consequence. Why have them? Who cares? I mean, do you really care?
SPEAKER 07 :
More than one. I mean, even that.
SPEAKER 04 :
I want to know, does she keep her land against the evil oil company barons? Right. Right. And no, folks, not all oil companies are evil. Actually, at the end of the movie, they mention some good things that happen with oil companies. But… Does she keep her land? Does she strike oil? What does she do with her life? What happens with this little town? That’s what I cared about. Stay with it. Okay. A female senator and an NAACP journalist. Well, actually, they could have played larger roles. I think that would have been more interesting. And just as a reminder, NAACP back then was not this left-wing Marxist group that it is today. Okay. When it started out, it was starting out to advance politically. Colored people who were obviously being held back terribly in our country. I think it’s a phenomenal thing that it was there. And at the time, it was very good.
SPEAKER 07 :
She got her reparations.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. And just so you know, this guy who played the role, I think he could have done a lot more. I liked him, and they did virtually nothing with him. So it was kind of a waste. All right. Rotten Tomatoes gave this movie 68%. Hmm. I find that pretty fair. I’m going to give it just a smidge under that because I just thought it slowed down too much and got a little too distracted going off into things that didn’t matter. I’m going to give it three stars, quality three stars. Political three, don’t really care either way. Moral, religious, I’m going to give it a four. I think it had great morals. That’s no big surprise. Do I recommend going to Sarah’s Oil, folks? Yes and no. This is not one of these Christian movies that’s going to blow your socks off. Right. OK, but it’s also not a bad one where you’re saying, oh, my gosh, the acting is horrible. I can’t take this. This looks like a school play. Right. It’s nothing like that. It is a good, solid quality movie about a historical character who was a wonderful story and very interesting. So do I recommend going to Sarah’s Oil if it’s for you? Yes, I do.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
Does that sound fair?
SPEAKER 08 :
Sounds fair. Yeah. If you’re into it, go see it.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. And by the way, once again, your non-Christian friends, are they going to be offended? No. Not at all. Okay. Up next is somebody who never offends you. That is Geno’s Auto Service. More service rewards and a better warranty. Call Geno’s at 303-794-6700 or you can find them at klzradio.com.

Now back to Rush to Reason on KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 04 :
And welcome back to Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560, Andy Pate filling in for John Rush, along with Luke Cash and Tanner Cole. And Tanner!
SPEAKER 07 :
What’s up?
SPEAKER 04 :
Are you ready for yet another movie? I’m ready for a movie. All right, well, guess what? The Nazis. They’re bad guys. I think we can all agree, right? Famously. Yep, they are on trial in Nuremberg.
SPEAKER 02 :
Dr. Kelly? Can you tell me what I’m doing here? I couldn’t say. Doc, I’m just a translator. Translator for what? We’ll see.
SPEAKER 19 :
You are standing inside a secret military prison. It currently houses what’s left of the Nazi high command.
SPEAKER 02 :
Sir, I’m a good psychiatrist, but this might be a little bit beyond my area of expertise.
SPEAKER 09 :
I’m going to put Herman Goering on trial. He’s the face of the Nazis now. As he falls, so do they all. He will try to outwit me, but no man has ever beaten me. Why not just shoot them? I’m not going to make them martyrs. There will be no statues of them. This war ends in a courtroom. The world needs to know what these men did so that it can never happen again.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, what do you think?
SPEAKER 07 :
Anything to do with Nazis I’m usually into because it’s most critical time in human history.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
It’s so cool.
SPEAKER 04 :
I still just can’t believe it happened.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, I mean.
SPEAKER 04 :
I mean, my goodness.
SPEAKER 07 :
I feel like just even when there’s a movie with Nazis in it, I automatically think it’s a better movie because I’m just like. It’s the most pivotal time.
SPEAKER 04 :
I know, it’s incredible. Well, okay, at the close of World War II, there was a debate in our government over whether to simply execute the remaining Nazi leadership or put them on public trial. I didn’t know that. There was actually a debate over this. Do we want to give these monsters a platform? Then again, do we want them to die in darkness without fully exposing their crimes? It was a tough question. And I mean, it was very close. It was on the edge. In the end, Chief U.S. Prosecutor Robert H. Jackson, he’s played by Michael Shannon, pushed for a first of its kind international tribunal, which was held at Nuremberg. Well, leading up to these trials, a psychologist, psychiatrist really, named Douglas Kelly, played by Rami Malek. Do you like him?
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, I like this guy. Well, he was brought in to evaluate the defendants. The main defendant was Herman Goring, of course. He’s played by the great Russell Crowe, and he was Hitler’s second in command. Well, the interplay between these two resembles Silence of the Lambs, with a captured monster in the shrink assigned to him. There’s both a loathing and a relationship of sorts between the two. Well, naturally, Kelly, well, he’s both searching for weakness and also trying to stop suicides. Why? Since these condemned men would love to end it all before taking the stand. I mean, they figure we’re going to die anyway.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right.
SPEAKER 04 :
We want to die before we are put up there. But with Goering, he faces an evil genius with both charisma and ego. It’s chess against a master. Well, could Goering pull off the impossible and turn these trials against his accusers? Could he somehow evade full judgment? That was the question. Jackson has no intention of allowing this. He wants an inquisition, the well-deserved kind. But Goering isn’t just a speechmaker like Hitler. He’s a strategist. And he is also the leader of these monsters being put on trial in Nuremberg. What do you think?
SPEAKER 07 :
Great cast. Looks good. Some of them probably escaped to Argentina, but we’ll never know.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay. Yeah, I don’t think so. Anyway, what works in Nuremberg? Well, first of all, Russell Crowe, of course, is strong. You expect that. Now, I’m not going to say he was a strong Silence of the Lambs strong. It wasn’t that good. But he was very solid, very good job, as is Jackson. You have simply great acting, milking every emotion and tactic from two historical figures. And it was kind of fun watching them get ready for the trial. I like that. There are actually some lighter moments, keeping this from being a historical slog all the way through. The music is well done, as are the costumes, set designs, all very authentic. And that’s important. You want to make sure that they capture the era. And they do. A great reminder of the Holocaust, much needed by both sides today, showing how clever skewing of facts brought escalating blame to the Jews and finally death. And it was haunting. Watching it was just haunting. The Holocaust film they show at the hearings was a pure horror show, and it was real. They actually showed the actual film that was actually shown at Nuremberg. Wow. It was something else. Many Nazis were sick in their personal lives. They lived these sick lives right behind the scenes. But Goering was a dedicated family man. I didn’t know this. This was quite a different look at him, even in a film showing his full evil. All right. What doesn’t work in Nuremberg? Well, it was far longer than it needed to be. Rather than producing greater intensity, the sheer length robs the film of its impact. It was too long. They dragged it out. That’s bottom line. They dragged this out and they went on some bunny trails that really, really, really didn’t keep you focused on the point. There’s too much content, not enough punch, bad pace. Too much focus on painting today as being like Nazi Germany. I understand Nazi Germany can happen at any time, but they spent too much on it. They overplayed their hand, especially down the stretch. This movie didn’t know when to end. It was Lord of the Rings, Return of the King, 18 endings or whatever. It’s kind of like, okay, wrap it up, wrap it up, and they weren’t doing it. The biggest problem isn’t the propaganda of the movie, but rather the pace. It was a slog. And so, like I said earlier, it had some lightness that kept it from being a total slog, but not enough. Finally, the government’s case, I’ll be honest, it was unimpressive. I mean, really, it wasn’t so much about the case they made. It was about the film they showed that made the case for them. I wasn’t that impressed by it. I wasn’t impressed by the chess game. All right. Rotten Tomatoes gave Nuremberg 69%. I’m not bad. I think it’s a little too rich, so I’m going to go two and a half stars. Really, this is not an entertaining movie. It’s not one I’d really want to see again. Fine acting, but just not a well-crafted story for a lot of it. Political, I’m going to drop it to a two, a little preachy toward the end. Not too bad, but a little bit down. Moral, religious, well… You’re seeing horrors, horrors, horrors. So within the genre, I’ll give it a three. Okay, I’ll give it a three. It’s okay. Do I recommend going to Nuremberg? Honestly, not really. There are a lot of Nazi movies that reveal what happened back then, and I just don’t think this is a great one. I think there was some very good acting. I don’t think it was a great story.
SPEAKER 07 :
Unfortunate.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
With that cast, you would think it’s great.
SPEAKER 04 :
And there was some great acting. Don’t get me wrong.
SPEAKER 07 :
I was watching the trailer. Russell Crowe looked ginormous. I’m looking at photos of Herman, and he’s not that large of a dude in terms of width, not height.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, Goering was pretty big, though.
SPEAKER 07 :
I mean, tall, maybe. Some of these, he’s not as chubby as Russell Crowe was in the movie.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, right toward the end, he actually tries to lose some weight, which is interesting, which I won’t get into. Hey, why don’t we jump into some NFL picks? Are you ready? All right, let’s go. If we have the music great, if we don’t, that’s okay. Let’s just jump in. Up first, Tanner, we got the Falcons at the Colts. Colts are favored by six and a half. Does Sauce Gardner make the Colts a legitimate contender? Go.
SPEAKER 07 :
I don’t know if he does. He hasn’t looked that great this year compared to his two fantastic seasons, or less than two, but the last two years, not as well. It is in Germany, so it kind of relates to the film, but I just think the Colts, they finally lost another game to the Steelers. I think they’ll just beat the Falcons. Falcons aren’t consistent.
SPEAKER 04 :
I agree. I’m going to go with the Colts next game. The Giants are on the road at the Bears. Bears are favored by three and a half. Here’s the question. Is the spread too low? Bears look pretty hot.
SPEAKER 07 :
Ben Johnson’s done a great job. I think the Giants still score points, even though they’ve had so many injuries. Jackson Dart, I think, is going to be a legit player. I think the Bears, and I’ll take the points.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, me too. I think Giants’ defense sucks, let’s be honest. Okay, the Bills are favored by 9.5 against the Dolphins. Are the Bills back on track, or are they fool’s gold?
SPEAKER 07 :
They beat the Chiefs in regular season, but they’re 5-1 in the regular season. I think they’re 0-4 in the playoffs. Another one is 8.5 points enough. Tua and the Dolphins just seem to give you the ball whenever they’re about to score.
SPEAKER 04 :
I agree.
SPEAKER 07 :
I kind of like Bills and the points.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, Ravens are favored by 4.5 for the Vikings. After adding pass rusher Draymond Jones, can the Ravens be taken seriously now?
SPEAKER 07 :
I think everyone kind of thinks as long as they keep winning, they’re going to somehow make the playoffs. The Vikings had a big win over Detroit, though, and everyone thought the Lions were back, so I’m still going to take the Ravens, but I think J.J. McCarthy was a little better than people think.
SPEAKER 04 :
I agree. I’ll take the Ravens, but it is close. Browns, they are favored by two and a half points at the Jets. Question, who cares?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, the dung beetle bowl, you could call it. We’ve had a couple of these, and it seems to always involve the Browns. I mean, the Jets have had some exciting games, but it’s the Jets. They just gave away their two best defensive stars, so I don’t even know who to take. I’m going to take the Jets just because it’s a little more… They lost two guys.
SPEAKER 04 :
They’re probably ready. In my opinion, we should use the government shutdown as an excuse to shut this game down. Okay, I mean, we could save some real money that way.
SPEAKER 07 :
There’s another one on the list as well.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, yes. Next game, the Patriots are on the road at the Buccaneers. Buccaneers favored by two and a half. Now, there’s a couple other really good ones, but is this the game of the week?
SPEAKER 07 :
I think it has to be just because how well Baker has played without all of his weapons. And then Drake Mays, an MVP candidate. I don’t think anyone saw the Patriots being top of the AFC East. I think people could see them as a playoff team. But I like the Bucs. I’m not sure how it’s going to go. I’m not sure which receivers we’ll be playing.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, I’m not sure either. I’m going to take the Patriots just to be different. Okay, next game. Wow, the Saints are at the Panthers. Panthers favored by 5.5. Is there anyone besides Tennessee that the Saints could beat?
SPEAKER 07 :
Maybe the Browns or maybe the Jets. That bottom four, bottom five, you could give or take. Carolina’s not terrible, but they’re not great. Bryce Young looks better, but it is his third year. So I’m going to take the Panthers, but I’m not going to watch it.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, me either. Okay, next game, the Jaguars. They’re on the road at the Texans. Texans are favored by one and a half. Why is Houston favored?
SPEAKER 07 :
I don’t know because C.J. Stroud got a concussion, so I don’t know how. Maybe just because their defense is really good.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
And they have Davis Mills playing, who I forgot was even on the team.
SPEAKER 04 :
He’s all right. Good backup.
SPEAKER 07 :
I don’t know. Travis Hunter’s out as well. This is another game I’m not really going to care about, but I’ll take the Texans’ defensive touchdown.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, boy, I’ll take the Jags to be different. Okay, because honestly, I’d probably take the Texans too, but we’re agreeing too much. Next game, the Cardinals are on the road at the Seahawks, who are favored by six and a half. Are the Seahawks emerging as the NFC favorites?
SPEAKER 07 :
I wouldn’t say the NFC, but they’re going to win their division, it looks like, unless the 49ers can get healthy for once. But two of their best defensive players I don’t think are coming back this year. Cardinals did beat the Cowboys, but I don’t think Jacoby Brissett’s on a Sam Darnold projectory later on in his career. So I’ll just take the Seahawks again, probably with the points.
SPEAKER 04 :
And by the way, get used to that question. Here it comes again. The Rams are favored by 4.5 at the 49ers. Are the Rams emerging as the NFC favorite?
SPEAKER 07 :
I like them or the Lions. The Packers are a little too shaky. The Eagles are a little too shaky for me. But no Jaden Daniels. I mean, I think the Lions are going to steamroll, get a little revenge from last year’s NFC division.
SPEAKER 04 :
You mean the Rams?
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, sorry. Yeah, I’m jumping off the Rams. Who goes apparently back, too.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. Okay, we’ll take the Rams next game. The Lions are on the road to commanders. Hey, are the Lions emerging as the NFC favorite?
SPEAKER 07 :
One of them. I would say them and the Rams.
SPEAKER 04 :
I mean, Seahawks, Rams, Lions, those three teams and the Eagles, maybe the Bucs. It’s getting interesting.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, no Jaden Daniels for the commies, so they’re just not going to go anywhere. I can’t believe they let him stay on the field that game. That was stupid. It was unbelievable.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, it’s a blowout. My goodness, we only have two games left. The Steelers are on the road with the Chargers. Your Chargers are favored by two and a half. Hey, can the Chargers make Trevor Penning into a quality offensive tackle?
SPEAKER 07 :
It’s the only name I wrote down. He was a first-round draft pick for the Saints. Both of our tackles are out, it seems like, for the year. I mean, if he can just do better than our other guys, I think we have a chance. But Steelers’ pass rush is great, so I’m taking the Steelers.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, I’ll take the Chargers at home. And here’s last game. The Eagles are on the road with the Packers. Packers are, what, favored by two, I guess? What idiot made Green Bay the favorite in this game? I think this is a blowout. I think the Eagles win in a rout. And I’m not saying that just as a depressed Packer fan.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, after last game, the Eagles have had some time off. I think the Eagles are going to win, too. They’re just going to be fresher and a little more positive.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, I think they’re going to kill them.
SPEAKER 07 :
I think that could be the case.
SPEAKER 04 :
I think the Packers are going to be outgunned all over the field. In fact, this game could be over at halftime. I have no idea why the Packers are a favorite. But, hey, man, I’m a Packer fan, so I hope they win.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right. I mean, who knows? Micah could get you a couple sacks, force fumble, a touchdown. You never know.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, today’s impossible question. Let’s get back to this. And it’s, what is the northernmost capital city in the world? Rey? Okay, I’m going to try to say this.
SPEAKER 06 :
Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Reykjavik.
SPEAKER 06 :
Reykjavik? Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Reykjavik? I’m not sure.
SPEAKER 06 :
Reykjavik? Where’s that in? Iceland.
SPEAKER 04 :
Luke, are you going to name your first child Reykjavik? Nope. So not Dek, not Reykjavik. Why not? Why do you hate these wonderful names for your first child?
SPEAKER 08 :
Because I think they’re stupid and dumb.
SPEAKER 04 :
I mean, if your child is named, is a girl, a beautiful little girl, will you name her Butch?
SPEAKER 08 :
No, Hubert. Hubert for a girl.
SPEAKER 04 :
Hubert for a girl.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yep.
SPEAKER 04 :
That’s going to be a troubling upbringing for the girl.
SPEAKER 08 :
It’ll build character.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, you’re going to make life pretty miserable for her. Why would you do this to a wonderful, beautiful little girl? I hope you have a son, because we already know you’re going to be bad to a girl by giving her a terrible name.
SPEAKER 08 :
No, the son will be named Dandelion.
SPEAKER 04 :
Dandelion, jeez. Get over here, Dandy. Wow. Might as well name it after clouds. Cumulus. Get over here. Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
You could name him Declan and call him Deck. That would work. That’d be pretty good. That’d be good. Famous soccer player.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay. Folks, in the next hour, our topic, because we did Nuremberg, is going to be courtroom movies. This was a hard one, wasn’t it? I mean, did you guys have a hard time?
SPEAKER 08 :
It was pretty difficult. Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, because you want to know why? I just don’t think we watch a lot of them.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, when they come out, it’s just so dragged on, especially if you already know the story.
SPEAKER 08 :
I feel like it’s hard to do courtroom movies well. So anytime a new courtroom movie appears, you’re reluctant to go see it unless you hear really good things.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, what’s usually, because I agree with you, what is usually the problem with a courtroom movie? It’s too boring. Slow. It’s slow. You know why? Because everybody is sitting there in the courtroom, and it’s hard to bring the energy, energy, energy when you’re in a courtroom setting.
SPEAKER 07 :
A hundred percent.
SPEAKER 04 :
Unless the lawyer really has it going.
SPEAKER 07 :
You kind of need back and forth of them like out or like leaving the courtroom and then like trying to figure out something else like, oh, we didn’t know they had that piece of evidence or like trying to get a witness to go, but they won’t go. Or like there was a mob trying to sway the jurors like you kind of need that extra drama on the back end.
SPEAKER 04 :
Exactly.
SPEAKER 07 :
Inside the courtroom, it’s hard to get it.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, guess what? We’re going to have some. We’re going to have some good movies. I’m looking forward to it, folks. That is it for our number one and our two. Once again, we’re talking courtroom movies. If you have any to share, call in at 303-477-5600. Until then, keep it right here on Rush to Reason, KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 1 :
The Rich Guy.
