HR1 Andy’s 5-Star Movie Reviews: Sinners & The Accountant 2 (4-25-25) by John Rush
SPEAKER 09 :
It’s finally Friday on Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush. So I tell him I’m a pro jack. And who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama himself. So we finish 18, and he’s going to sniff me. And I say, hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know? And he says, oh, it won’t be any money. But when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness. So I got that going. And movie reviews with Andy Payne.
SPEAKER 14 :
I think that you got the wrong impression about me. I think in all fairness, I should explain to you exactly what it is that I do.
SPEAKER 10 :
What I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.
SPEAKER 09 :
Same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world. Stick a fork in me, Jerry. I’m done.
SPEAKER 19 :
Now, here is your host of Rush to Reason, John Rush.
SPEAKER 05 :
Filling in is Andy Pate, party of choice. And I’m your host, Andy Pate, filling in for John Rush, along with Luke Cashman and Tanner Cole. Man. Okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
He’s getting into the band vibe.
SPEAKER 05 :
Luke, you were militant, and Tanner, you were kind of drugged out, kind of 70s-ish.
SPEAKER 07 :
I got soul in me, baby. He got soul in you.
SPEAKER 05 :
Okay, well, today we’re going to do some movies, of course. But before we get to that, last night was round one of the NFL draft. And no, folks, I’m not going to spend a bunch of time on that. Richard and I will do a full recap on Monday. But let’s do a quick recap just of round one. Tanner, you’re a big draft, Nick. I know you get into it, right?
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 05 :
Okay, let me ask you just a few questions, get some of your thoughts, and then we’ll take a break, come back, do some movies. What did you think of the Broncos pick? I mean… Who did they get, for those who don’t know?
SPEAKER 07 :
I think I’m pronouncing his name right. Jihad Baron? No, Jaday. Jaday. Jihad is something very different. Well, there was also a guy named Jihad in the draft, so that makes it a little… Jihad Campbell.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah. Yes. You ever heard of the singer Shardé? I think so. So Ja Day. Kind of like that.
SPEAKER 07 :
Ja Day. We both thought he’d go to maybe the Cardinals with the 16th, even the Dolphins at 13. Yes. The fact that the Broncos got him, yes, I’m sure Broncos fans maybe want a running back or receiver since the second best receiver and running back are still on the table, but… They now have the best secondary by far in the NFL, and they don’t even need safeties with their three corners. So it was a steal, technically.
SPEAKER 05 :
Bronco fans, I got news for you, and Richard, I’m sure, will say the same thing on Monday. You got a steal! You got a steal. He shouldn’t have been there.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right.
SPEAKER 05 :
OK, and they were not even thinking of cornerback. But you know what? When you got gold there, you don’t take lead.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right.
SPEAKER 05 :
And that’s just the way it is. He was too good. OK, let me jump in for a moment. Luckiest or the team that did the best last night?
SPEAKER 07 :
I think the Giants won the draft.
SPEAKER 05 :
That’s what I was going to say, the Giants.
SPEAKER 07 :
They got their pass rusher, Abdul, who’s fantastic. And they traded back in for not a lot to get Jackson Dart, who can sit behind Russell Wilson for a year or two. I think they won the draft.
SPEAKER 05 :
They got their QB of the future. They got the best pass rusher to come out in the last few years. The next LT, or at least LT-esque.
SPEAKER 07 :
At least Micah Parsons or something.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, Micah Parsons, whatever. Who cares? He’s good.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 05 :
Oh, my gosh. John and Cheyenne, wherever you are, probably in Cheyenne, you should be very happy right now. You guys lit it up last night. You won the draft.
SPEAKER 07 :
I was with the Giants fan watching, and he was very nervous, but then very ecstatic.
SPEAKER 05 :
Oh, I’ll bet he was.
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, he was beyond himself. I haven’t seen him that happy rooting for the Giants in years.
SPEAKER 05 :
Okay, well, let’s really quick talk about the other teams in the AFC West, one of which is your team. But first, we’re going to go to the Raiders. I would say they did quite well.
SPEAKER 07 :
I mean, with what they had there, they’re either going to take McMillan, offensive tackle, but everyone knows they’re going to take Jenty if he was there. And sure enough, he was.
SPEAKER 05 :
What the Raiders did is don’t blow it. Don’t be stupid. Take the obvious pick. Sometimes the most obvious thing is what you want to do.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right. And Pete Carroll’s there. Ashton Jenty is Marshawn Lynch, maybe on steroids. I mean, he is a bowling ball. You can’t get him down. He’s probably faster than Marshawn as well. So it was a great pick.
SPEAKER 05 :
He reminds me of Marshall Falk. That’s who he reminds me of. The way he runs. He’s got vision, eyes in the back of his head. He can cut eight ways. Look, he’s not Barry Sanders because I got news for you. Nobody ever will be. Okay, Barry Sanders is the greatest thing, and I won’t even call him a person, thing I’ve ever seen carry a ball on a football field. I’ve never seen anything like him.
SPEAKER 07 :
He was burying at Boise.
SPEAKER 05 :
Oh, gosh, he was something.
SPEAKER 07 :
That one run against Washington State broke eight tackles.
SPEAKER 05 :
He’s amazing. So the Raiders, you’ve got to deal with somebody there. Now, the good news is the Raiders are still not a good team, but they just became a lot better. Okay, let’s take a look at the Chiefs. I think they got themselves a steal.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 05 :
Offensive tackle who should not have been there at number 32. What a steal. Go.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right. They traded with the Eagles, which they didn’t really care. The Eagles, I think, got a steal as well, getting the best linebacker.
SPEAKER 05 :
Jihad.
SPEAKER 07 :
Jihad Campbell.
SPEAKER 05 :
You know they’re going to make jokes about that.
SPEAKER 07 :
They already have Nick Vaughn.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right?
SPEAKER 07 :
Nick Vaughn, who was amazing this last year.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
They already have him re-signed. So, I mean, the Eagles get better. They always take the best player. They’re the best run franchise, probably, in the NFL. Howie Roseman.
SPEAKER 05 :
Them in Detroit, yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, it’s unbelievable. Every year the Eagles are getting a great draft pick.
SPEAKER 05 :
Okay, but back to Josh Simmons, the left tackle. And the reason this is important, folks, is if you want to beat the Chiefs, who do you got to get? Their quarterback.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right. You need edge rushers.
SPEAKER 05 :
You need edge rushers. And now you got to get through Josh Simmons, who, if he dropped because of an injury, and if it weren’t for his injury, he was a top 10 talent. Right. And so they just got a left tackle. If he gets healthy… That makes life difficult. Okay, now to your team. You guys got a player I did not expect you to get because I thought the Broncos were going to take him at 20. You got yourself a little bit of a steal, a little bit of an unexpected treasure. Go.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yes, we got Omari Hampton, the running back out of North Carolina. I wanted Matthew Golden, who went next pick. Texas wide receiver to the Packers.
SPEAKER 05 :
Oh, to who? Who got him?
SPEAKER 07 :
The stinking Packers.
SPEAKER 05 :
Who was that? Oh, the Packers, my team. What shirt am I wearing right now?
SPEAKER 07 :
And jacket.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yes, and jacket.
SPEAKER 07 :
Every time Andy walks into the studio, it’s double Green Bay. He’s just rooting for one Super Bowl in his lifetime, but…
SPEAKER 05 :
they’re not two actually two dos actually i was alive for all of them so we’ve won four in my lifetime and just you know uh nfl championships total 13 just thought i’d throw that out there i love i can’t believe there was fans watching the draft in lambeau field me and my uh buddies were shocked that they were doing that oh it was packed packed house you could just see when the draft started it looked like there’s 150 000 people there okay really quick though because we got to go to break omari and hampton the reason this is important for bronco fans is you got to try to tackle this guy not you your players but i’m telling you it’s a good thing because you won’t be able to your players had better omari and hampton is a bowling ball an angry one think of a bowling ball if it’s going down toward the pins but you fill it with rage okay that’s omari and hampton He is an angry, angry, powerful runner. Remember when Marshawn Lynch went beast mode on that, you know, and they always call him beast mode because of that one run.
SPEAKER 07 :
Against the Saints, I think.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right. And he just threw off half their team, just one after the other. Omarion Hampton does that a lot. He throws guys off of him. We’re talking 250-pound linebackers. He weighs 225. Doesn’t matter. Pure muscle. The guy has one running muscle, and he just throws people off and runs angry and, oh, by the way, he’s fast and can catch.
SPEAKER 07 :
Slippery. I mean, it’s not like he’s just a straight bulldozer. The guy has some silkiness to him as well.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right. I mean, is he LaDainian Tomlinson? Once again, I’m not sure anybody is, but he’s the next best thing.
SPEAKER 07 :
What I would do for him.
SPEAKER 05 :
And you got him now for several years.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, if LT had a son, he has to be a Charger. But there was a couple of reaches. Like, I didn’t like the Vikings taking Donovan Jackson, the guard. I thought they should have gone with a safety. Nick Emanuari or whatever his name is.
SPEAKER 05 :
Emanuari.
SPEAKER 07 :
And Malachi Starks were still on the board. I would have liked that more, but…
SPEAKER 05 :
I agree, although that’s a good guard. I like the player. I had him right at the top of the second round going, so he goes about 10 picks higher. But no, I would have taken one of the safeties too. Go ahead.
SPEAKER 07 :
Also, the Cowboys have now taken an offensive lineman three out of the last four years named Tyler.
SPEAKER 05 :
Okay, I didn’t get this. And by the way, I like Tyler Booker. Terrible athlete, great offensive guard. Just a bulldozer. Dudes, you need a running back. You need a wide receiver. You got no weapons. So who are you blocking for? Yeah. Cowboys, I don’t know. They’ve been spinning their wheels in mud now for years.
SPEAKER 07 :
They’re done.
SPEAKER 05 :
They’re done. They’re done. And by the way, look at the division they’re in. The Giants just rocked it in the draft. Washington is soaring. And the Eagles are the best team in the league. Well, the best team outside Detroit.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right.
SPEAKER 05 :
Okay. I think the Cowboys, they’re heading into a tough time.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right. And then the Jaguars trading up only three spots. To go get Travis Hunter and gave up their second-round pick this year and their first-round pick next year, I don’t think makes sense to anyone.
SPEAKER 05 :
Stupid. Look, I love Travis Hunter. I love me some Travis Hunter. Everybody here loves him. CU, great player, best player in the draft, you could argue. But are you kidding? They gave up a Pro Bowl defensive tackle, Graham, who went at No.
SPEAKER 1 :
5.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right. Okay? Yeah. And all that, that’s stupid.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. That is just stupid. I mean, Graham could end up having a better career than Travis. We don’t know. And you trade all that. If it was like Arch Manning, it makes sense. Like if you go get that quarterback. Yeah, but you’re not getting that. For a wide receiver or corner, I don’t get it. And it’s not like the Jags are Super Bowl bound, maybe not even playoff bound.
SPEAKER 05 :
No, they’re nowhere close. This was stupid. These are the kinds of moves that set teams back for a decade. Right. And we’ll see how it goes. The good thing is they’ve actually got a number of good young players. Maybe they think he’ll just, boom, hit it and turn them around. I don’t think so. I think they gave up too much. Folks, you may really love that Mercedes.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right.
SPEAKER 05 :
But you’re not going to give up 200 grand.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right.
SPEAKER 05 :
Okay. You may really love that new gun, Luke.
SPEAKER 08 :
I do.
SPEAKER 05 :
You’re not going to give up $50,000. No. Okay. I’m sorry. I’m sorry you can’t do it. Okay. Why don’t we take a break? When we come back, we’re going to do movies, starting with Sinners. Are you ready?
SPEAKER 07 :
Ready.

Are you ready for a movie? I’m ready for a movie. Okay, Tanner. Vampires meet blues music in the Old South at the Sinners.
SPEAKER 11 :
I’ve been all over this world. I’ve seen men die in ways I didn’t even know was possible. Hey, brother. Be careful. I will. With all the things that I’ve seen. I ain’t ever seen no demons. No ghosts. No magic.
SPEAKER 10 :
Till now. Then get back inside.
SPEAKER 06 :
Let me in, man.
SPEAKER 03 :
You keep dancing with the devil.
SPEAKER 15 :
One day he’s going to follow you home.
SPEAKER 05 :
All right, does that sound intense, Tanner?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yes. All right. I want to see it.
SPEAKER 05 :
Okay, well, here we go. It is the early 1930s, and Michael B. Jordan, he stars as twins Smoke and Stack. Now, before we go any further, I want to ask your guys’ opinion here. Michael B. Jordan, okay, in my opinion, out of all the muscle men in Hollywood, he’s the best actor. That’s my opinion.
SPEAKER 07 :
You don’t think John Cena’s a good actor? Oh, gosh.
SPEAKER 05 :
No. No? No, I do not. But I think he’s very likable. He’s a good guy. I just think Michael B. Jordan is the best actor out of all the muscle men.
SPEAKER 07 :
He’s pretty good. Zac Efron? He’s pretty good.
SPEAKER 05 :
Okay, that’s a good one. You know what? I’m going to give it. What? Vin Diesel, no.
SPEAKER 07 :
Vin Diesel’s not an actor.
SPEAKER 05 :
Well, Vin Diesel is greater than actors, okay? He’s a step above. He’s transcendent. He’s transcendent.
SPEAKER 08 :
Michael B. Jordan is great, however. I love Michael B. Jordan.
SPEAKER 05 :
I think he’s great. Okay, who did you mention, though?
SPEAKER 08 :
Zac Efron.
SPEAKER 05 :
Excellent. And who did you say? Henry Cavill.
SPEAKER 08 :
He’s pretty good, too. I really like Henry Cavill.
SPEAKER 05 :
Is it Cavill?
SPEAKER 08 :
I have no idea. I’ve heard it pronounced both ways.
SPEAKER 05 :
But he’s good, too. Yeah, they’re all really good. You’ve got a lot of lugheads out there, let’s face it. But these are guys who can really act. All right, here we go. Well, Michael B. Jordan, he stars as twins Smoke and Stack. Now, the twins, they’ve made big money in Chicago as part of organized crime. So now they return to the South with a dream. They’re going to buy this large building that was owned by the Klan and turn it into a juke joint featuring black blues music. This is their sweet revenge. That makes sense. I think it’s kind of fun. Along the way, they pick up local musicians who can really perform, including Delta Slim, Perlene, and a young preacher’s son named Sammy. He’s played by Miles Katan. You heard of him? He’s very good, trust me. Well, against his dad’s warnings, Sammy rejects the church for the excitement of playing blues guitar and singing at the new club. In fact, he’s really the central character here. We see the usual friction, of course, between the white racists versus the black people who are wanting to build a new life back in the old South. We’ve seen this a million times, but on opening night, we also see a white guy who is far more dangerous than racist. It’s not racist at all. I couldn’t care less. His name is Remick, and he’s an Irish vampire. Have we ever seen that before?
SPEAKER 07 :
Conor McGregor?
SPEAKER 05 :
Well, that was out of the blue, but no, I don’t think so. Okay, Remick, he’s actually drawn to powerful souls, and apparently Sammy’s soul is irresistible. So Remick turns some locals, and you know what I mean by turn them, right? He turns them into vampires, and they ask to enter the juke joint. Nothing doing. They’re not invited in. You know, with a vampire, you don’t invite them in. They can’t come in. But the juke joint, they don’t know they’re vampires. They just know they’re pretty sketchy. They’re like, no, I don’t think so. First of all, you’re white. And secondly, you look kind of sketchy. But as partiers go outside, little by little for various reasons, Remick’s vampire mob grows. He turns them. Singing Irish folk songs and dancing around fires, they seek to overrun the remaining club folk. Now we have an action horror film with unstoppable vamps and dwindling good people. Smoke, he leads the good, but Sammy is the real prize. Can anyone survive? Can Sammy’s soul be saved? And can the Old South provide opportunity for freedom in music or evil and oppression? And that is the story of Sinners. What do you think, Tanner?
SPEAKER 07 :
I think it’s going to be worth a watch.
SPEAKER 05 :
All right. Well, what works in Sinners? Michael B. Jordan, first of all, he performs both roles well. He nails them both. Loved it. Weaving the different personalities of twins into a story of hope, pain, vengeance, and action. Because Smoke is more the reserved one, the business one, right? And Stack is more the outgoing partying type. And it’s kind of interesting how he does them both. Now, the music scenes are very impressive. Very impressive. Both old blues and Irish folk. And they were both cool. That’s what I liked. They didn’t do the Irish folk like it sucked. They didn’t. They did it like it was cool. They were both very cool. The art of the film is great. It’s a very arty film. Luke, you’ll like that. Let’s go. There you go. Jack O’Connell is an excellent villain as Remick. He does a terrific job. He’s cunning. He’s driven. He’s ravenous, of course. Just a bad, bad guy. But he does it with style. And I really like that. He is a bad Irishman. Now, the second half of the film is an intense fusion of great music and action horror. Boy, you don’t see that very much.
SPEAKER 08 :
No, it’s a very unique sort of mashup.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right. And that’s what I like. You know, every now and then you need a vampire movie that charts a new course. And they do. And I like that. And finally, there are no poor performances. The mood is real. It’s vibrant. And everybody does their role just right. All right. What doesn’t work in Sinners? Well, there are some real drawbacks. First of all, it’s flat out too long. There’s too much agenda. We’ll get to that in a little bit. The first half narrative was definitely too long. Here’s the problem. I’m just going to tell you right out. First half drags, second half rocks. I’ll just be honest. But this movie was disjointed in the storyline. It was tedious, especially through the first half. There’s a couple sex scenes that are needlessly disgusting. With the preacher’s kid, I’m just being honest, I’m talking to my audience here. With the preacher’s kid doing adult porn level in his first sex act, no, it didn’t make sense. And these add nothing to the story. look there are sex scenes in movies that totally add to the story right they’re part of the story these were totally needed they add nothing and they slow the story just for art’s sake I actually love artsiness, but not for art’s sake. Make it work with the story, and it didn’t. The story itself lacked focus. Remick being drawn to Sammy’s soul, that was a really cool idea, but that should have driven the narrative. They should have really focused on that, cut out a lot of the other stuff, but it was too random. And if Vamps, by the way, if they procreate that fast, because they procreate very quickly in this movie… then how can they be stopped? Okay? This isn’t the future. We don’t have guns like in Aliens that can take outside of a building. How can they be stopped? It didn’t make any sense. And here’s another one. Are these the only vamps who don’t know about sunrises? Okay? I mean, did they not get the memo? Because they’re really kind of dumb at this point. So you’ve got these implausibilities woven throughout the movie where you’re like, the preacher’s kid would not be doing a porno movie his first time out. You wouldn’t have all these other things stuffed in. The first half shouldn’t have taken so long. You shouldn’t have a lot of what’s in the movie, even though you’ve got some awesome, cool stuff in the movie. And by the way, Michael B. Jordan, he wasn’t even the center of it. The scene with Smoke slaying a Klan group, OK, it actually added nothing to the story. This was Hollywood. Every now and then, Hollywood loves to do these scenes, you know, going back with black guys killing a lot of white people because they get this revenge filled. You know, it’s this this high that they get out of it. And, you know, I can understand that in some films. And by the way, I hated the Klan. OK, but it’s just it just drags it out. It’s kind of like, OK, OK. I’m glad you feel good now. You got that out of your… Can we get back to the movie?
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, like in Django, they added the clan, and it was perfect because Jamie Foxx was a freed slave, so it made sense.
SPEAKER 05 :
It was the point.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right. This here, now, you know, don’t get me wrong. Well, here’s another thing, okay? So the clan’s people who are in the area, terrible people, right? Obviously. Right. But you got the clan’s people. You also have this vampire army that’s growing. Which one is the bigger threat?
SPEAKER 07 :
Obviously, the vampires.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right. Which one is the point of the movie?
SPEAKER 07 :
Vampires.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right. Which one should we be really focusing on so the movie clips along and goes action, action, pounding, pounding, pounding, and keeps you wanting to watch more?
SPEAKER 07 :
The Klan.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, sure. The Klan. Like, I want to see a bunch of chubby white people go down when they get shot because they’re incompetent.
SPEAKER 06 :
Oh!
SPEAKER 05 :
You know, I don’t care, okay? Get to what matters and stick with it. Here’s the thing. There was an incredible movie in this movie. But they added a lot. They dragged out the opening half and they added stuff that you didn’t need. Take that out. You could have had, this thing should have been, I’m serious, about an hour and a half long. Okay. A hundred minutes tops. Move it, move it, move it. This thing could have been great because you had all the elements of an awesome movie. Okay. Here we go. One last thing. You know, Sammy was the central story. It almost became like the twins were a sidelight.
SPEAKER 07 :
Hmm.
SPEAKER 05 :
Well, you know, I’m there to watch Michael B. Jordan. No offense. So it all just kind of strayed around. Okay, getting to it. Rotten Tomatoes gave this 97%. Which, of course, they’re going to. Right? Right. Okay. They love the woke nature of black people slaughtering white people. They love that. You know, the white villains coming in as vampires. The white clan. Kill, kill, kill. There’s nothing better. This is catnip for movie reviewers. I don’t think they’re entirely wrong. I think it’s a good movie. I’m going to give this three stars. I’m going to recommend people seeing it. It is worth seeing. It’s pretty good. It’s good. It’s good. And here’s the thing. I think when people go to it, they’re going to come out the door and think, man, that was really good. Do you know why? Because what do you remember? The first half or the second half of the movie? Second half. All right. Well, the second half is great. The second half was almost a five-star movie. About four and a half. First half, one and a half star. Political, I’m going to give it two. Threw a little agenda in there. Not too much, but they threw enough. More religious, one. Not a big deal. I don’t go to a vampire movie to be saved, okay? I get it. But they shoved stuff in there that you’re just like, this has literally nothing to do with… I want to see Michael B. Jordan fight vampires! Right? I know I’m a, you know, I’m a shallow person. I get it. But that to me is just cool. He’s cool. Vampires are cool. Let’s get on with it. All right. Do I recommend going to centers? Yes, I do. Just understand it’s got some drawbacks.
SPEAKER 07 :
If you need to go to the bathroom, go in the first half.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, go in the first half. You’re not going to miss much, honestly, because they drag the story development. They’re developing all these characters that don’t wind up meaning that much. So there you go. That is Sinners. We’ve got another movie coming right up. Up next is Veteran Windows and Doors. 35% off three windows, 40% off four or more. Call Veteran at 303-529-0720.
SPEAKER 03 :
Veteran Windows and Doors knows that other companies only care about getting the sale. Those companies sell you on emotions, pressuring you to sign today to get the best price, but they don’t even know about the critical energy codes and ratings of the windows. Dave Bancroft, owner of Veteran Windows and Doors, guarantees he will get you the right windows and doors designed specifically for your home. without the ridiculous sales tactics and needless pressuring. Dave is passionate about educating you so that you can make an informed decision on your timeline and wants to protect you as a consumer. You’ve lost thousands of dollars. Don’t deal with just the sales rep. Work with Dave. For the month of April, when you buy up to three windows, enjoy 35% off. Buy four or more windows, you’ll receive 40% off, all with free installation. Just go to klzradio.com.

SPEAKER 18 :
The best export we have is common sense. You’re listening to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 05 :
And welcome back to Rush to Reason. Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560, Tanner Cole. Man. And Luke Cash. Man. I’m Andy Pate filling in for John Rush. And Luke, buddy.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. I got a question for you.
SPEAKER 05 :
All right. It’s kind of personal.
SPEAKER 08 :
Sure. I’m ready for it. I’m ready for it.
SPEAKER 05 :
I think we’ve known each other long enough.
SPEAKER 08 :
Luke, are you ready for a movie? I am ready for a movie. Okay. Yes.
SPEAKER 05 :
That was good, that was good. Are you okay? Breathe, breathe. Wiping some sweat from my brow. You’re too ready for a movie. I didn’t know that was possible. Okay, here we go. Luke, how often do we see a sequel to a little-known movie?
SPEAKER 08 :
I mean, not very often, especially if it’s been a while. You usually get a movie, and then within a year or two, you get a sequel. And if you don’t see one by then, chances are you’re not getting one.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, in this case, it actually happened. Now, the first movie, by the way, actually had a real charm to it. Well, now we do get to see this in The Accountant 2.
SPEAKER 02 :
Good morning, Dreamboat. Could we discuss business now?
SPEAKER 06 :
Go.
SPEAKER 14 :
Do you like puzzles, Mr. Wolf? Ray King has been murdered. I need your help to finish the job he started. How does this all connect?
SPEAKER 10 :
Most brains seek a pattern that’s familiar. My brain doesn’t work that way. It’s me, your brother. Can you be in California in 24 hours? Just call it. How have you been? Merry Christmas. Happy birthday. It’s not your birthday. Birthday’s November 11th. Unbelievable.
SPEAKER 18 :
Was your brother up to speed on the case? So it’s been a minute.
SPEAKER 10 :
Braxton, thank you for coming. I’m really glad you’re here. Did you say that? Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Should we go over the plan again?
SPEAKER 15 :
Plan?
SPEAKER 10 :
Braxton. Thank you. Are you ready?
SPEAKER 1 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 05 :
Sound like fun, Luke?
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, it sounds like a great time.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, it does sound pretty fun. Okay, here we go. Ben Affleck, we like him. Yeah. He’s a good actor. I never forgive him for Pearl Harbor, but that’s okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
I’ll never forgive him for Batman v. Superman.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
Or the Justice League. That was rough.
SPEAKER 05 :
He has let us down, but he has also made about 10 million movies. So, you know, I think we’re going to come in some slack. Here we go. Ben Affleck. He stars as Christian Wolfe, a brilliant autistic accountant who used to launder money and clean books for mobsters. Now, this, of course, that put this put him on the run when they turned on him. And now he’s sort of a numbers vigilante uncovering corruption with the books. But we begin this film with retired FBI financial crimes boss Raymond King. He’s played by J.K. Simmons. And he’s meeting someone at this bingo event. They got food there, bingo. And he’s seeking intel to find some Central American refugees. Well, the problem is he’s got hitmen after him. And his last words that are written on his arm are, find the accountant. This brings in Christian, who exposes the human trafficking scheme at, of all places, a pizza company. But hey, Rain Man, these people are violent. Just want to be careful. Enter Christian’s estranged brother, Braxton, played by John Bernthal. We like him, right?
SPEAKER 08 :
I love Jon Bernthal.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, he’s great. Well, he’s nothing like Christian. Braxton is violent, sloppy, and angry about not seeing his bro for years. So we have a buddy action thriller with the two opposite brothers arguing while unleashing their different talents to battle evildoers. It’s formula, but it’s a good one. I like it. There are also a couple of key female characters here. One is Mary Beth. She’s a Treasury Department financial crimes agent. She was in the first one. She serves as the straight man to the Kooky Brothers. The other is a blonde lady hitman named Anais, and she’s played by Danielle Pineda. Have you seen her?
SPEAKER 07 :
I think so.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, she’s very good. She has an absolutely intense backstory. Just intense. And she’s actually the most interesting character in this film. And I’m not talking down the other characters. She’s very interesting. Ultimately, the brothers must survive an ace while not driving Mary Beth crazy. Oh, and they need to save the day, too. That’s important. There are a lot of kids being trafficked, and they’ve got to stop it. That is the story of The Accountant 2. Luke, what do you think?
SPEAKER 08 :
I think it sounds like a fun ride.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, it does sound like a fun ride. Well, what works in The Accountant 2? First of all, Affleck and Bernthal are a fun duo. Each of them is embracing his role for action comedy. One is playing, obviously, an autistic accountant who also is very good at violence because his, well, little backstory, his dad was rather abusive and trained him into violence. I’ll just say that. I’ll say no more. The other brother loves violence because he’s a hitman. It’s what he does. And they both embrace their role, and it works very well. Next, this kind of pairing is crowd-pleasing, and I think it was needed at this time of year. I don’t get enough of these buddy comedies like this that actually work. We get some rotten ones, but not enough good ones in the middle of April. I like that. Next, the fight scenes are energetic and fun. They’re brutal, too. And there are also some touching moments, which I enjoy. Now, it’s interesting watching how autistic people, they can’t connect or emotionally give, which I think is very interesting. This is very frustrating for the non-autistic brother, right? He has a brother who won’t connect with him emotionally at all. Right. That’s rough because you want your brother to love you, right? Because you love your brother. And that’s pretty rough. And finally, Anais. I get back to her. She’s a great character. But the fun moments are the brothers talking. Those are the funnest moments, just watching the two of them talk at each other, not even to each other. It’s pretty fun. Okay, what doesn’t work in The Accountant 2? Well, the first half, it took too long setting up the buddy action comedy that we wanted. A little bit like Sinners in that way. Just took a while to get lift off. All right, a little too long. Next… For such a fastidious lead character, this film is pretty sloppy. It needed editing. It really did. The plot was way too complicated. And they kind of left out some of the steps along the way to get where you needed to go. You know what? They really should have centered on Anais and the brothers alone. Because right there, her story is so interesting. Their story is so interesting. Adding in too many other stories… You’re getting complicated here. You don’t need it. They should have left out some of the fluff. Simplify. In fact, Anais’ story was so good, it reduced the brothers to a side story, which was weird. I was really surprised by that. Yeah, she was a very fascinating story. All in all, this had plenty of good parts, but they’re all disjointed and drawn out. There’s a lot in common with Sinners here, okay, in that way. Although I actually thought Sinners was more focused than this, and Sinners was pretty unfocused. This isn’t a great time for a film that tries to show the good in illegal immigrants. That’s probably, you know, just saying, probably not a great sales pitch at this time. Just saying. Okay, I know it wasn’t made this year.
SPEAKER 06 :
Right.
SPEAKER 05 :
But just something that they might have wanted to edit a little bit, you know. But whatever. Rotten Tomatoes gave this 75%. But the audiences that went to it gave it 92%. Now, granted, it’s people who want to see the sequel to The Accountant. I get that. I actually, I’m pretty much right there with both of them. I thought it was a good movie. Quality, three and a half stars. This is a fun movie. I really enjoyed watching the two brothers hit it off and go after each other and so forth. I really thought if they could have trimmed this movie just like Sinners with some good editing, this was a four and a half, five star movie just like Sinners was. Getting back to Sinners, with some better editing, Sinners was a five star movie. OK, there was five star stuff in this. I don’t know. Maybe this could have been five star, too. It was really good. I mean, Rain Man in an action film is kind of fun. You know, I enjoyed it. Political. Golly gee, I’m going to give it to just for the illegal immigration stuff. I think that was ill advised. more religious three it’s fine do i recommend going to the accountant too yes i do i think that this is the dumb buddy cop movie even though they’re not cops but it’s dumb buddy you know you know i mean buddy action movie it’s an action duo it’s a it’s a fun time yeah this is a summer movie happening in april and i like it like that so have some fun with that i think the reason it’s an april release quite honestly is it’s a little too long and not tight enough in the summer that’s when you get these action comedies that are just tight right and just boom boom boom boom boom drags a little but guys be patient go to the accountant too i think you’re going to have some fun what do you think sounds like a good time all right let’s take a break when we come back we’re going to do question of the day All right. SPEAKER 05 :
And welcome back to Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560, Andy Pate filling in for John Rush along with Luke Cash and Tanner Cole. Man. Okay, man, are you ready for some questions of the day? Yeah, let’s hear it. Impossible question of the day. Well, we got to catch up a little because I was a bad boy on Tuesday and I did not catch up.
SPEAKER 08 :
Bad, bad boy. Busy day. Leroy Brown.
SPEAKER 05 :
All right, here we go. Tuesdays, the yesterday question was, what happened on May 10th, 1869 at Promontory, Utah? Any idea?
SPEAKER 08 :
Tanner’s mom tripped and fell. You scumbag.
SPEAKER 05 :
Boy, you have an old mom. Just so you know.
SPEAKER 07 :
She’s 150. Yeah.
SPEAKER 05 :
Okay, here’s the answer. The Transcontinental Railroad was completed, unifying the United States. You know, the golden spike. Right.
SPEAKER 07 :
When you said trans, I was a little… Yeah, I know you were thrown off.
SPEAKER 05 :
Are you offended?
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, I was just like, first trans activist? There’s no way.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, I think trans railroads really should not be able to shower with normal railroads or go into their locker rooms. I mean, what do you think?
SPEAKER 08 :
Or play in the same sports. I’m shocked that the Trans-Siberian Orchestra is allowed in ballrooms.
SPEAKER 05 :
Exactly. I’m very upset about this, and let’s move on. Okay. The Tuesday’s impossible question. I know, I’m just jumping around. Which track is nicknamed the Lady in Black?
SPEAKER 08 :
The Lady in Black? Which track? Racetrack. Oh, okay. The one in Tanner’s backyard. Shut up.
SPEAKER 05 :
Darlington.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
I don’t even know where that is. I know Arlington.
SPEAKER 05 :
Okay, let’s move on.
SPEAKER 08 :
I know Burlington.
SPEAKER 05 :
Burlington. You guys are doing great. You’re really smart people. Okay, let’s go to today’s impossible question. We’ll start with yesterday’s impossible question because there was no show yesterday. It was a repeat. Which stadium was home to the Brooklyn Dodgers before they moved?
SPEAKER 07 :
I don’t like baseball, so I don’t know.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yesterday’s? Ebbets. You don’t like baseball? I’m a Cubs fan.
SPEAKER 07 :
I’m a Padres fan. We’re the best team in the league, but I still don’t care.
SPEAKER 05 :
Wow. That’s sad. Okay. And finally, we’re going to go to today’s impossible question, and we will not give the answer.
SPEAKER 08 :
Let’s redeem ourselves.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yes. If you want to weigh in on this one, folks, you’ve got to go to RushReason.com, but I will not give the answer. Which trainer holds the record for the most Kentucky Derby wins?
SPEAKER 08 :
Believe it or not, Tanner’s mama’s second time.
SPEAKER 05 :
Trainers? I’m sorry, do people really know trainers very well? I guess they probably do in that world.
SPEAKER 07 :
I can’t say anything about Luke’s mom because she’s my boss. Exactly.
SPEAKER 08 :
That’s why I’m making fun of Tanner’s mom because I know I’m safe.
SPEAKER 05 :
Do you have fun with that, Luke, knowing that your mom is his boss? Yeah. I mean, if he ever offends you in any way, shape, or form, you can destroy him.
SPEAKER 1 :
It’s true.
SPEAKER 08 :
It’s true. That’s pretty cool. I mean, the power is overwhelming. I feel lightheaded and ready to conquer the world.
SPEAKER 05 :
I know. Outside of Charlie, you’re the most powerful person around.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. I mean, the difference in scales are so vast.
SPEAKER 05 :
Oh, yes.
SPEAKER 08 :
See, Charlie could turn all of us to dust with a single glance should he desire.
SPEAKER 05 :
And then restore us again. You know what? And here’s the thing. We wouldn’t know he did it.
SPEAKER 08 :
Exactly. That’s the really scary part. I’m sure he has done it at least a few times.
SPEAKER 05 :
What was that two minutes of empty air space that you heard on the radio? We were all piles of dust. And then he rose us again.
SPEAKER 08 :
Revivified us and we, you know. We never knew. He was the leader of those white vampires. Yes, he was. Don’t put that on him.
SPEAKER 05 :
Charlie, do you sing Irish tunes? He will not say. Okay, next hour, we’ve got a topic, but it’s not a movie topic this week.
SPEAKER 08 :
No. Luke, what is it? We’re breaking the mold. We’re doing bands. Rock bands.
SPEAKER 05 :
Rock bands. We’re going to do rock bands. Favorite rock bands. If you want to call in with those, it is 303-477-5600. Or if you want to text us your favorite rock bands, text them to 307-200-8222. John, wherever he is, wherever he may be, will relay them to me and I can read them on air. Really quick here. Rock bands is going to be broad. Okay, so, yeah, it can be the metal rock. Everybody thinks metal rock bands. It can be soft rock.
SPEAKER 06 :
Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER 08 :
It could be punk rock. It could be grunge rock. It could be metal. Yeah, punk rock.
SPEAKER 05 :
It could be whatever kind of rock. We are very open-minded here at Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 08 :
Very so. Yes. It could be geode. It could be granite. We love Transatlantic.
SPEAKER 05 :
It could be gravel. Yeah, gravel rock. It could be the mantle, the Earth’s mantle.
SPEAKER 07 :
Boulder rock.
SPEAKER 05 :
That’s very thick rock, the Earth’s mantle. Do you think somebody would come out with a fusion form one day called thick rock? Probably not. Rock that is stupid. Rock music that is dumb.
SPEAKER 07 :
Just get me and my buddies on the drum and guitars and there you go.
SPEAKER 08 :
It’s just dense. It is max volume. Tanner just trying his best.
SPEAKER 05 :
By the way, I think everybody has heard a terrible rock band because they had to listen to it because their friend was in it.
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 05 :
Has everybody alive been through that? Does everybody have a friend who was in a terrible rock band, but they really wanted you to go to the club that night and listen to them?
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 05 :
And then they weren’t friends because it was kind of painful. Okay, folks, in the next hour, we’re going to be doing rock bands. That’s it for our number one right now. And if you want to tell us your favorites, once again, 303-477-5600. Give us a call. Until then, keep it right here on Rush to Reason, KLC 560.
SPEAKER 06 :
Average guys.
SPEAKER 1 :
Average guys.
