In this episode of Rush to Reason, host John Rush dives into topics for Health & Wellness Wednesday, starting with expert insights on estate planning with guest Michael Bailey, Denver’s mobile estate planner. The discussion highlights the importance of proactive estate planning and the emotional and logistical challenges families face when unprepared.
Later, Dr. Neal Sadek, a leading dermatologist, shares groundbreaking insights on foot health, discussing common issues like fungal infections, the importance of proper hygiene, and how innovations like teledermatology are transforming care. The episode wraps with a spotlight on liver health, featuring expert advice on maintaining one of
SPEAKER 03 :
This is Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 05 :
You are going to shut your damn yapper and listen for a change because I got you pegged, sweetheart. You want to take the easy way out because you’re scared. And you’re scared because if you try and fail, there’s only you to blame. Let me break this down for you. Life is scary. Get used to it. There are no magical fixes.
SPEAKER 03 :
With your host, John Rush.
SPEAKER 01 :
My advice to you is to do what your parents did!
SPEAKER 05 :
Get a job, Turk! You haven’t made everybody equal. You’ve made them the same, and there’s a big difference.
SPEAKER 07 :
Let me tell you why you’re here. You’re here because you know something. What you know you can’t explain, but you feel it. You’ve felt it your entire life, that there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there. It is this feeling that has brought you to me.
SPEAKER 13 :
Are you crazy? Am I? Or am I so sane that you just blew your mind? It’s Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush. Presented by High Five Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling, where every call ends with a high five.
SPEAKER 04 :
I am Hans. And I am Franz. And we just want to pop your loss.
SPEAKER 03 :
Welcome to Health and Wellness Wednesdays on Rush to Reason. Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through lifestyle.
SPEAKER 06 :
I have what doctors call a little bit of a weight problem. I used to grab bear claws as a kid, two at a time, and I’d get them lodged right in this region here.
SPEAKER 05 :
Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands.
SPEAKER 01 :
Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place, and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.
SPEAKER 16 :
I’m sorry that I’m fat. All right, welcome. Wednesday, Health and Wellness Wednesday, Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. With me today, Michael Bailey from Michael Bailey Law. He’s our mobile estate planner, and I just grabbed him because he was heading out the door, and I said, hey, hang out with me for a few minutes because, you know, it’s that time of the year where, yes, it’s health and wellness, but it’s also that time of the year, Michael, where I think people start thinking about, hey, It’s year-end. What should I do in some of these areas, estate planning and so on? Now, fair warning for all of you listening, you’re not going to get that done by the end of the year. Not with me. Well, and here’s the other thing that people probably have missed this year, Michael, because I sort of did as well until I started looking at the calendar last week. There’s three weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. It’s a really short season this year because of the way Thanksgiving falls and Christmas is on a Wednesday.
SPEAKER 14 :
Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER 16 :
So it really makes for a short season in between. So, yeah, you’re not going to get that done, probably with most people, you included, partially because you’ve been booked pretty solid all the way through the year. Yes, I’m scheduling in February of next year. Okay, so get on it, folks.
SPEAKER 14 :
It’s a really good problem for me to have.
SPEAKER 16 :
Get on it, yes. Well, that’s not a problem. That’s an opportunity for you and others as well. They just need to get it done and get on the books.
SPEAKER 14 :
Sure, and that’s always why I’ve talked about An estate planning emergency, it’s probably too late. You need to be planning this on the front side. Right. I mean, I was in the ICU on Saturday signing a trust with a gentleman from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. who didn’t make it through the night. That’s too bad. And he was 84, so it’s okay. But still. But still, yeah. I mean, I got to call it 544 a.m. from his wife freaking out because he was in the ICU and hadn’t signed his estate plan. I’m like, well, he’s had it for seven weeks. Like, we’ve been in and out of the hospital. I’m like, and that’s different than this day when we’re going to the hospital? Right. So, yeah, I hate that. I’m like, we need to be planned ahead. It works so much better. Yes.
SPEAKER 16 :
And it does. And I’m with my folks here of late. And those of you that have listened to me any length of time know, you know, my mom passed away here not long ago. And we had to do some different things with my dad with memory care and so on. And trust me, folks, you want to have this stuff dialed in. And fortunately for me. And yes, Michael was the guy. Some 10 years ago, because that’s how long we’ve been together, Michael. I made my folks, literally, you guys are going to do this. And they did. And I will be the first to testify that because of all of that, and I’d already had a hard enough summer as it was, Michael, that still made it that much easier. Thank you, by the way.
SPEAKER 14 :
You’re welcome. But your parents are also very fortunate that they have you. because everybody needs someone like you to be able to handle things. Thank you. And not everybody’s family has that.
SPEAKER 16 :
And we were talking about that prior to us coming on air today. So what do families do that don’t have somebody that is fairly financially sound, good with numbers, they understand these things, they can take a lot of the emotion even out of the decisions and decide as a family, these are things we’re going to do. If families don’t have that, Michael, what do they do?
SPEAKER 14 :
You start looking outside the family. Do you have friends? Do you have advisors? Do you have a CPA? Do you have financial advisor who is capable and willing and able to do it. If you don’t have that, do you have a friend? Hopefully everybody’s got that one friend who’s like, yes, I know numbers. I’m going to go become the next Warren Buffett and make billions. And I’m like, cool, good for them. Is that somebody who could help? Or if you don’t have anybody like that, then you start looking at professionals and professional fiduciaries. I was going to say, I’m sure there’s people you can hire to do this, right? Yes. They definitely charge for their work. They’re not in it for the joy and the charity of it.
SPEAKER 16 :
By the way, I will just say this on a side note. This stuff takes an immense amount of time, by the way. It does. And so a lot of you don’t know that behind the scenes, all the things that I’ve been doing through the summer and fall and so on. And yes, there’s a lot of things that go into this. And I do my very best to make sure I separate the show from all of those things. But you guys probably know there were probably some days where… I was doing the very best I could here knowing I still had all of that on the backside to take care of. Right. Well, life affects you.
SPEAKER 14 :
It does. It’s almost like you’re like everybody else where life affects you. Yes, we are actually. It’s weird, huh? We all have very similar things when it comes to that. Yes, Michael. Absolutely. I mean, you know, two days ago my wife did not sleep well. And so she was doing okay. So last night she’s like, I need a good night’s sleep. She was feeling a little bit sick. So she took some NyQuil so that she could be knocked out and In the middle of the night, my 12-year-old knocked on the door, and I got up and went and stripped the sheets off his, because he had revisited dinner. Those nights happen. Yes. And my wife was like, oh, thanks so much for doing that. I’m like, it’s part of being a parent. That’s right. It’s what we do. But her day, she needed to sleep more than I happened to at that point. But what we do affects us, and life affects us. It does. It does. And, you know, when you’re picking somebody to be a personal representative or… Think through all of this is my point. I mean, if you do probate and you hit every single deadline and do every single thing exactly, you know, is the first possible you can do, I’m like, you can be done in two or three months. But I’m… thinking that you work for a living john and i’m thinking that i mean just i mean i see you here at the radio show you do things you have a normal life outside of just taking care of estate stuff correct and so it takes time and it takes effort and you really need to carefully consider who you’re going to put in charge not just oh well you know bobby’s the oldest so we’re going to put bobby in charge i’m like well let’s let’s think about that you know Let’s think about, you want to have a, just think through that of who can take that time, who can, and not everybody’s situation is the same, but who can handle that? Because who carries out the instructions is very important. And you want somebody who’s able to handle it and not going to get bogged down. I mean, I know full well, I’ve watched it affect you that your mother is no longer with us. But you also have the ability not to let that turn you into a blubbering blob of mush that can’t do anything ever again.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yeah, and I think my – and by the way, thank you, Michael, for – I’m just using you as a good example of how to do it. No, and I appreciate that. And my point with folks is they’re planning these things and they’re looking to the future and they’re trying to get with you and they’re trying to make all these decisions and who’s going to do what, where, how, when, and so on. These are the things that you need to be thinking through as to – You know, it’s nothing personal.
SPEAKER 14 :
Right.
SPEAKER 16 :
Who are you picking to do some of these things in your estate afterwards? Because it matters. Right.
SPEAKER 14 :
And these are the things that I can help you think through. Okay. Sometimes people are like, oh, well, you know, but I don’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings. So I’m going to put all five of my kids all together. And I’m like. Do you want them to fight? Because that’s like the best way to ensure it.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yeah. Unfortunately, in our world, it’s my sister and I because my brother passed, and we’ve been a really great team. She’s handled a lot of the things, emotionally speaking, that, frankly, I’ve not had the ability to do. We’ve been a great team. It’s worked out fabulous, and she’s thanked me for being able to handle one side that, again, is also difficult to handle. Point being, think through these things in your family and make sure that as you’re moving forward with Michael, you’ve got all these bases covered. And when these things happen, it’s not a matter of who’s favorite. It’s who can get these things done. Right.
SPEAKER 14 :
And people are like, oh, well, I don’t want to hurt somebody’s feelings. I don’t want to make them feel like they’re being left out. I’m like, just think of it this way. So, like, in my family, I’m in charge of everything when my parents go. Makes sense. I don’t get any extra money. Makes sense.
SPEAKER 01 :
I get extra responsibility. No money.
SPEAKER 14 :
I hear you. But I at least know what to do. That’s right. And that’s okay.
SPEAKER 01 :
And I’m willing to take that upon myself. That’s right.
SPEAKER 14 :
Absolutely. But, you know, I have a brother who kind of gets his feelings hurt that he’s not in charge of everything. Do you have time to do it? Do you want to do it? He’s like, well, no. I’m like, then let me do it.
SPEAKER 16 :
Don’t worry about it. Move on. It’ll be okay. That’s right. That’s right. So, well, Michael, number one, appreciate all that you do. Thanks for your support. Thank you again with everything that happened with my folks, because trust me, folks, you want to have this stuff in order. It makes things go so much better when you do. I cannot testify enough personal testimony to Michael about how well that works when you’ve got it all dialed in. I’m glad to hear that that’s the case. Thank you very much, by the way. You’re welcome. All right, and for those of you listening, you can get a hold of Michael directly. Go to klzradio.com. Go to rushtoreason.com. Go to drive-radio. I mean, wherever I am, you’re going to find Michael. It’s that simple, and I’ve done this even in the past. If you miss any of that, send me a text message, and I’ll still get you his number. So bottom line, we’ll get you with Michael, but my point is do it sooner than later because if you wait until after the holidays, it’s going to be next spring before you get anything done. Right. I mean, call me. We’ll set up an appointment. We’ll get it on the books. And then, you know, we’ll get you started. You’re the man. All right. Thank you, Michael. Appreciate it. Hi-Fi Plumbing is next. 877-WE-HI-5.
SPEAKER 12 :
The day after Thanksgiving is the busiest plumbing day of the year. Don’t let your home get stopped up. Just call High Five. During the holidays, your plumbing works overtime. Visitors and guests, big meals, we don’t need to tell you. And when your main line gets clogged, your floor and sink drains can back up, causing flooding. And even if it hasn’t gotten to the point of backing up yet, you still have a big problem that gets bigger every day. It’s recommended that you have a plumbing inspection early, and an inspection from High Five can be scheduled as soon as the same day. For a limited time, they’ll give you an additional $35 off a drain cleaning just for being a KLZ listener. So find out more about what High Five Plumbing, Electrical, Heating, and Cooling can do for you this holiday season by clicking their link on the klzradio.com advertisers page.
SPEAKER 16 :
All right, 35% is the discount right now at Veteran Windows and Doors. Find them at klzradio.com.
SPEAKER 12 :
Veteran Windows and Doors challenge you to ask every window and door salesperson about the ratings of their windows and doors. Owner Dave Bancroft knows other window and door companies are trained only to sell, not on whether their windows are even engineered for your home. Dave has an app where he can show you the exact door the other company showed you, but Dave will also include the correct efficiency ratings and codes necessary for your home. The other companies’ doors often don’t meet code, energy-efficient ratings, or give you crucial tax credits on your products. Also, Veterans installation methods are far stricter than other companies. They do more flashing, sealing, and installation than is required to ensure your windows and doors are going to work the way they’re supposed to. And Veteran now offers financing. Get 40% off and free installation when working with Veteran windows and doors by going to klzradio.com.

Listen online, klzradio.com. Back to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 16 :
All right, we are back, Health and Wellness Wednesday. And again, I appreciate you guys all listening today. It’s always a great hour. I always learn something in this hour, and I hope you do as well. We have Dr. Neal Sadek joining us now. Dr. Neal, welcome. How are you? I’m fine. How are you? I love Denver. Well, thank you. I do, too. I’m a native of this area, so I kind of have a soft spot in my heart for it as well. All right. You’re a leading dermatologist. You’ve published more than 3,000 journal articles and over 20 books. You’re the doctor’s doctor.
SPEAKER 04 :
Over 300. Actually, close to over 400. 400.
SPEAKER 16 :
400. Okay, hang on. I’ve got to change my notes. Over 400. Okay. Now, this is a topic, by the way, that I honestly, in all of the years I’ve been doing health and wellness, we’ve been doing this for eight-plus years now, feet is something that, frankly, Dr. Neal, we’ve never talked about.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, you know, it’s the most distal part of the body, but we should pay more attention to it.
SPEAKER 16 :
Agree. So I’m glad you’re here. Talk to us, number one, about our feet and specifically fungal infections.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, you know, the feet are an important part of our appearance, and I think they also play an important part in the structure of the body. And if they’re taken care of well with good health, for example, good moisturization, good desquamation or exfoliation, good cleansing, hygiene, not wearing barefoot and staying away from moist environments, You know, the feet can be really healthy and a beautiful part of the body. Okay. If you don’t do that, then you run the risk of infections, which can either be bacterial infections or fungal infections. And one of the most common infections are fungal infections of the toenails, which can be manifested as yellow or whitish discolorations or crumbling of the nail plates itself.
SPEAKER 16 :
What do you find, and as we are in Colorado, you know, we’re entering into our colder season, and a lot of people, even though they might still be wearing shorts, they probably still have at least socks and shoes, and things have changed a little bit as far as their footwear is concerned. What do you feel, especially for those of us, you know, we have four seasons here in Colorado. What do you feel are some of the mistakes people make when it comes to feet care?
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, I think one thing, they don’t take foot care in the winter as seriously as they might in the summer.
SPEAKER 16 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
Number two is they commonly, because it’s the most distal part of the body, will not put a sunscreen on their feet. They won’t get down that far. Number three, because it’s not something they see in their everyday peripheral vision, they may not recognize any of the signs of an adverse condition. again, contact part of that, such as an allergic rash, cellulitis, or anything more serious. And even a growing, again, fungus infection, which can lead, again, to dystrophy or abnormalities of the nail plate, and in the more severe cases can lead to a cellulitis or an infection of the lower extremities, which can actually lead to hospitalization with intravenous antibiotics. Wow.
SPEAKER 16 :
Is there anything, and this is something from my past where my dad struggled with his feet. He’s still with us today, but he struggled with his feet for years and years and used to tell myself and even my siblings that, you know, one of the ways to take better care of your feet is to wear white socks versus colored socks. Is there any truth to that?
SPEAKER 04 :
There’s probably not very much truth to that. It doesn’t really matter, but the important thing is to be sure that your socks are clean, that they’re washed after every wearing. And then you live in an area where people commonly will be in boots for a good part of the year during the snow season. So you need to be really careful because you can have a lot of moisture and secondary infection occurring from occlusion of wearing, again, boots for a long period of time.
SPEAKER 16 :
Is there times, and again, I think some of this is misconception, probably is even on my part, is there times where no socks is better than socks? In other words, if we’re in the summertime and it’s warm out and so on, are we better to ditch the socks during that time of the year or does it really matter?
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, it may be better to ditch the socks, but don’t necessarily don’t walk barefoot. You still can wear some sort of sandal that can be protected to the feet. So it’s not about ditching your socks. It’s about, again, keeping the area clean, keeping it well moisturized, and keeping it well humidified.
SPEAKER 16 :
Are there certain individuals that have more problem, I mean, like other diseases and things, you know, all of us have a little different DNA and different things that can affect us. In other words, where I’m going with this, Dr. Neal, do some people struggle more with their feet than others, and is some of that hereditary?
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, it can be hereditary, yes. People that struggle more with their feet are people that are overweight or obese, people that have diabetes, or people that have congenital abnormalities to their feet.
SPEAKER 16 :
OK, what are some of the just day to day care things? I know you’ve talked about some of the things just a moment ago regarding even sunscreen and things like that. But when it comes to actual foot care, you know, in the shower, bathing, things like that, are there things we should be doing with our feet that some of us might be missing?
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, I think for healthy feet, an important fact, try exfoliating your feet. Use some sort of exfoliation device, a brush or something that can exfoliate the skin, and do that once or twice a week. That can be very helpful. You should also keep your feet well moisturized. When you come out of the shower, while you’re still sort of moist on your skin, apply a good moisturizer right after that time. And if you see a sign of infection, like a yellow toenail or scaling web space problems, Again, there are great at-home products, such as WW Get My Stride that we helped develop, that you can use to treat those without actually going into a doctor’s office.
SPEAKER 16 :
That was going to be my next question. What is the Stride foot care program?
SPEAKER 04 :
All right. This is sort of an innovative program where teledermatology or telemedicine, the ability to actually send a picture of your feet or your nails and then have one of our experts analyze them and then prescribe without going into the office. If it’s a more severe infection, they’ll give you an oral antibiotic called jobenafine, and then a topical, again, stride cream to use. If it’s very minor, they might just give you the stride cream. But that stride clear nail formula or the topical agent can lead to marked improvement of your feet and nails just within a period of several days, believe it or not.
SPEAKER 16 :
I’m at the website, and I assume, is it stridecare.com?
SPEAKER 04 :
www.getmystride.
SPEAKER 16 :
Okay, www.getmystride. Perfect. Okay, so in other words, this is something where if people think that they’re having some foot problems, they can go here and, like you said a moment ago, don’t even have to go in for an actual visit. A lot of this can be done via telehealth, right?
SPEAKER 04 :
That is right. That’s the new hot area. There’s actually more telehealth visits and visits into doctors’ offices in the last year.
SPEAKER 16 :
Okay. So Get My Stride is the place to go. And once they’re there, and I’m at the website right now looking. You’ve even got a nice new limited time offer for those of you listening. I would highly suggest you go there. Now, essentially, they go in and set up a profile, I guess you could say, Dr. Neal, and then from there you guys take care of the rest. Am I correct in saying it that way?
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. We examine the photographs that you sent. We look at the symptoms that you had. and then we give you the best, again, either topical or topical and oral treatment that really can be helpful in improving the appearance and leading to better foot health.
SPEAKER 16 :
Okay, last question that I’ve got on mind, again, more of a personal question. You see all these different ads for orthopedic insoles and come in and get this done and get that done and so on. Is there any validity to that? And personally, just myself, I just noticed that I do get on the scale and I do watch my weight pretty regularly, but Dr. Neal, I can almost tell you how my feet feel as to whether I’ve gained weight or not.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, that’s really true. You know, again, your feet are a very sensitive part of your body. And if you’re out of balance, such as with weight gain, that can lead to, again, symptoms and actually changes in the skin as well as the nails that can occur secondary to that. So, again, the feet are a telltale. They’re the most distal part of our body, but they’re also one of the major telltale areas of our body and our general health.
SPEAKER 16 :
I’m sorry, I said that was going to be my last question, but I have one more you just sort of triggered in my mind. Shoes. How important are the quality of shoes, boots, et cetera? You mentioned that a moment ago here in Colorado. A lot of us wear boots from now until, oh, I don’t know, next March or so. How important is that quality of the shoe? Does it really matter or does it not matter at all?
SPEAKER 04 :
I think the quality is important, but what’s more important is the fit. Shoes should not be too tight or too loose. They should have, again, good support, again, insoles and heels. Again, the comfort and fit factor is more important than the quality or the, again, expense of the shoe.
SPEAKER 16 :
Is there a… And I’m guessing this comes down to the person and the shoe and the quality and so on. But, again, this is one of those areas personally. I can tell when my shoe’s starting to wear out just by how my feet feel and my back feels. Am I weird and insane in that area, or am I really reading that correctly?
SPEAKER 04 :
No, poorly fitting shoes can lead to, again, back problems. Back pain can even lead to, again, disc disease or narrowing of the disc spaces in the back. So it really is important to wear shoes that have good support on the soles, again, good insoles, as well as ones that fit comfortably, not too tight and not too loose.
SPEAKER 16 :
This is awesome. Number one, thank you. I’m learning. As I said earlier, I always learn something in this particular hour each week that we do. We’ve never gone into the foot end of things. I probably should have. I mean, that’s the foundation. To your point earlier, that’s the foundation of everything else that we do. And you would think it’d be just natural for us to have somebody on and talk about feet. So here’s the deal, Dr. Neal. We will definitely have you back because this is a big deal and really a big part of our health on a daily basis.
SPEAKER 04 :
Don’t forget about your feet. If you’re kind to your feet, your feet will be kind to the rest of your body. Thank you so much for having me.
SPEAKER 16 :
Oh, you’re welcome. We’ll have you back. Thank you, Dr. Neal. I appreciate that very much. And, yeah, folks, that’s one of those things that we’ve – I don’t know, Charlie, that we’ve ever done a foot segment – ever we’ve covered a lot of other things on this program from eyes and ears and your sinuses and your overall daily health and your weight and your joints and we’ve talked about dementia and alzheimer’s and brain health and all sorts of other things and we’ve literally i don’t think we’ve ever done a segment in the past on foot care and i i how should i say this i think in our brains me who i book all the guests and do the different things and stuff comes in and out of my inbox and i will say this i do think that subconsciously when there’s something that we struggle with or those are the things that we’ll just sort of naturally gravitate towards and so i’ll book guests i’ll be the first to admit it i think subconsciously when i see a particular topic and i’m like oh yeah that i’m interested in that and i can see that and so on and i personally am not someone that struggles feet-wise with some of the things that he just mentioned, and not to get too weird here, but I don’t have toe fungus and things along those lines, and that’s just not an area in my world that I’ve ever really struggled with. Now, I have struggled with my weight, and your feet can hurt because of that, and so on, and you just heard me talk about that a moment ago, but I think because it’s an area that personally I’ve never struggled with, I’ll be the first to admit we’ve never brought it to you guys as listeners. Now, I also know that I’m probably a little bit unique that way. A lot of people out there do struggle with different things feet-wise, everything from some developing blisters and other fungus and different things we just talked about with Dr. Neal. So I probably owe you guys an apology. We should have had somebody on talking about feet. a long long time ago so I will do this more regularly we’ll find more people to come on and I’ve actually got a good doctor friend of mine down in Texas that’s a podiatrist so I have some familiarity with this and I will do my best to make sure we cover feet more often than we have in the past so I apologize for not doing that we should have done that segment a long time ago. Golden Eagle Financial is coming up next. Al Smith. I talked to Al earlier as he was exiting his show, and I was getting ready to do mine. Of course, he’s here. SPEAKER 13 :
Now, back to Rush to Reason, presented by High Five Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling, where every call ends with a high five.
SPEAKER 16 :
All right, we are back, and this is Rush to Reason, of course, our Health and Wellness Wednesday segment. Troy Duhl will be joining us here in a moment. And, you know, on the foot side of things, Charlie, we were just talking about that through the break. And, yeah, I do. I owe you guys all an apology. There’s a lot of folks out there that struggle with COVID. Their feed and different things that can come up from, you know, bunions and fungus and on down the line we go. And, yeah, I will do my very best to have Dr. Neal back. And Dr. Neal actually back east. Charlie was just mentioning this a moment ago. Pretty big deal. Was actually on the whatever, Housewives of… Real Housewives of New York City. He was actually on that program. So Dr. Neal is a pretty big deal, and I feel fortunate to have him, and we will definitely have him on again. And I will get some other feed experts on as well to kind of talk about that end of things. And frankly, probably should do more in the whole dermatology end of things as well. It’s one of those things I tend to… Not skip over on purpose. It’s just one of those things that, you know, we get all sorts of requests in. And anyways, I will do my best to make sure that we shore some of that up for you all that are listening. And I apologize for not doing more of that. Troy Duhl joining us now. Troy, welcome. How are you? Good, John. How are you? Good. I was just apologizing to folks because for the first time ever on this hour, and I’ve been doing this hour for over eight years, I just had a foot specialist on talking about feet care and all of that. And I think, Troy, because it’s not one of those areas that I personally struggle with, you know, just subconsciously you sort of pass over some of those things. So I just apologize to my audience and I will do more of that because it is a big deal to a lot of people.
SPEAKER 15 :
It definitely is, and we put a lot of mileage on our feet.
SPEAKER 16 :
We do. And, you know, this is Men’s Health Month is November, and I know we’re going to focus on liver health. That’s what we’re going to talk about with you. But I think you’ve probably got products that would also help folks when it comes to feed health and so on because it all ties together, doesn’t it?
SPEAKER 15 :
It really does. And, I mean, your body is an amazing, amazing creation, and we know that the diet and exercise – affect everything. And if you have the right supplements and you’re taking care of yourself, it only helps with your foot health and your lower leg health and basically your total body.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yeah, because, Troy, I mean, as you know, I mean, these things that we’re talking about affect everything from our skin care to the way our nails grow. That can be on our hands and also on our feet. I mean, all of these things intertwine with one another, don’t they?
SPEAKER 15 :
They definitely do. And If you’ve ever had lower leg pain or inflammation or diabetes and you have lower leg ulcers and other things that are going on, you know how important what the health is.
SPEAKER 16 :
All right, let’s move this into focusing again on liver health. And again, one of those organs, Troy, I don’t know how else to say this. It really means we think a lot about heart health. We talk about other organs in our body. You know, we talk about, you know, not smoking and having, you know, healthy lungs and all these different things that we talk about. And our skin is the largest organ, of course, in our body. And Maybe I’m wrong in saying this, but I kind of think the liver kind of gets a raw deal at times.
SPEAKER 15 :
I totally agree with you. It’s not one that we always think about, but it is the organ that is most used, just about most used in our bodies. The amazing thing is, and I think most people don’t understand this, but it is the eighth leading cause of death for men. So it is a very, very important organ and one that we, like you say, often overlook.
SPEAKER 16 :
Being a car guy that I am, and a lot of folks you’ll relate to this, I know the oil filter on your car, on your engine, is so critical. I talk about it a lot on my Saturday program using, you know, top quality parts. And in oil filters, there’s a vast array of quality and features. It’s why I recommend, Troy, people go to really top-quality places to get even their oil change done because it is literally the main filter of that particular item on the car that really has everything to do with going from A to B. Well, guess what? Our liver is very much the same because it’s filtering. It is the oil filter of our body, isn’t it?
SPEAKER 15 :
It absolutely is. I really can’t think of a better analogy of what your liver does because it is the main source. I think about 95% of our pharmaceutical or 75% of our pharmaceutical products actually run through the liver. So you’ve got pharmaceuticals, you have our foods, you even have the chemicals, like you mentioned earlier, that you put on your skin. those different materials and toxins can run through your liver as well. So there are a lot of things that we don’t think about that goes through our liver because we don’t think about it. I’m not eating it.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yeah, and that organ, Troy, it’s just there. It does its job and doesn’t get a lot of fanfare.
SPEAKER 15 :
It does not, and probably a lot of it has to do with the fact that When we were growing up, if your mom ever made you eat liver— Oh, I had to.
SPEAKER 16 :
You know, I grew up in those days, Troy, where liver and onions was very much a staple of— I make fun of my sister because she was younger than me, about five years younger than me. And by the time she got old enough to where that was, you know, probably something she should have been eating, that fad had kind of, you know, quote-unquote died out. But, oh, no, I ate plenty of that as a kid.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, and we don’t look on it very fondly, and great memories when you’re thinking about that time. No, it was nasty.
SPEAKER 16 :
I can still taste it today. I can, too, and it’s not one of my favorite times.
SPEAKER 15 :
I’m glad that fad passed.
SPEAKER 16 :
And just really quick as a side note, I never could understand as I got a little older and learned what the liver does, I’m thinking, why again are we eating the oil filter? I never could figure that out.
SPEAKER 15 :
That’s a great point because you’re not getting the best things. You’re getting all those toxins in the liver. that you’re starting to chew on.
SPEAKER 16 :
But to your point, we need to keep it healthy. It is a critical, critical component of our bodies. I mean, Troy, and I’m not a doctor, so please correct me on this, but we can go without a kidney because we can donate a kidney and still operate off of one, but we can’t donate a liver.
SPEAKER 15 :
You cannot. You’ve only got one. The good thing is the liver can regenerate. It’s one of the few organs that we have that you can… lose a portion of and you get some regeneration of it. But the point is, it is very crucial. And there are an increased number of people walking around with what they call fatty liver disease. And fatty liver disease is a serious, serious condition that can start to affect all the areas of your health because your liver is not performing as well as it should.
SPEAKER 16 :
Okay, so what are some of the tips? We’ve got a lot of men and women both that are listening to us, but a lot of men especially that live, like me, they live fast-paced lives. They’re trying their best to keep up with, you know, family and finances and all the stresses of life that come on them. What do they do to make their liver more healthy at the end of the day?
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, the number one thing is make sure that you’re eating correctly. So if you’re eating right, stay away from those processed foods because the processed foods with a lot of the oils, a lot of the additives that they throw in there really bog down your liver. So what you want to do instead is make sure that you’re getting a lot of the leafy greens, get your broccoli, get your bok choy, some of those things that we don’t necessarily like or would never eat. normally run down or look at and go, hey, that’s what I want today, the broccoli. But you need to have those because they’re going to help your liver just function better. And then we know that there’s some evidence that show eggs, fish, chicken, and we’re talking about good, clean sources, organic sources of those things that really seem to help the liver detoxify itself. So make sure you’re eating healthy, and then we know that exercise is key because you’re going to help lower inflammation levels, and the more inflammation you have, that even affects your liver as well. The unfortunate final thing, obviously, we’ve taken away the processed foods, which, you know, that’s an easy thing for us to take away, but it’s not so easy to do because it’s on every street corner in America. And then the other thing is we’ve got to cut back on the alcohol consumption.
SPEAKER 16 :
Well, you know what? You took the words out of my mouth. I was going to ask that next because I’ve known – Some individuals, unfortunately, that literally lost their lives to liver disease because of, you know, an alcohol abuse situation. So that was going to be my next question is, you know, is there a safe limit or is it something that should just be avoided at all costs? Or, you know, talk to us about that.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, I mean, I think we all know what responsible should look like and probably shouldn’t be drinking it every day, drinking multiple drinks every day, but I think one glass of wine, having a beer, or even having some liquor once in a while is okay. But if you’re doing it every day, especially with hard liquor, that can start to really have an effect on your liver. So if you’re already eating poorly and then you add alcohol onto the mix and then you add the fact that you may be taking multiple pharmaceutical products, and you have environmental toxins from mold or whatever that your body’s trying to go through, you are having to really make your liver work overtime to keep you healthy.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yeah, I go back to the car, you know, the engine example, Troy, if you’re… You know, a high performance driver and you’re pushing that car, that engine to the limits on a routine basis and you’re doing things with it that everybody else isn’t doing with their vehicle. Then, yes, you’re going to be needing to do an oil change and also have even a higher quality filter than even what, you know, the next guy down the road would have on his vehicle. It’s very much relative one to the other, isn’t it?
SPEAKER 15 :
Absolutely, because if you do already have some of those issues, then changing your diet, stopping some things, and maybe even adding some supplements to that regimen is a good way to go because you’ve really got to kickstart that liver to kick off some of the toxins that are there.
SPEAKER 16 :
Okay. You said earlier that this is one of those organs that we can help rebuild and get back in shape. Talk about that end of it. You know, what sort of supplements should folks be, you know, on top of eating correctly and so on, what other things can they do to help in that area?
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, there’s a supplement called NAC. It’s N-acetylcysteine. That’s actually one that they use in emergency rooms when somebody comes in from a Tylenol overdose or acetaminophen overdose to help get their liver back up to speed because it produces a ton of glutathione, which is the main thing that you’re wanting your body to have to wipe out those toxins that your liver is dealing with. So that’s one. I would certainly put that number one on my list. And then I would look at getting some methylated B vitamins, so methylfolate, methylcobalamin. Those are great because methylation is key to your liver and how it detoxifies things. So you want to support that. And then there are a couple others I’d look at, like phosphatidylcholine or R-lipoic acid. and really look at those things, get some good quality ingredients in there, and make sure that it doesn’t have those excipients that actually cause an issue for your liver.
SPEAKER 16 :
Question for you. If they go to Centurion Labs and they go to the website and they’ve got questions along these lines, can they ask these questions and have somebody help them with what to buy?
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, I mean, feel free to send us. There’s a link to an email on there, and if somebody has a question or even has phone numbers on there, so you can call, you can send an email, and we’re pretty quick. Hopefully within 24 hours is what we try to do. to abide by and get back to you with an answer and help you out any way we can.
SPEAKER 16 :
Back to the foods, and you talked about broccoli and so on. Is there any other dietary things outside of doing the supplements you just mentioned? Is there any other dietary things where somebody would say, gosh, I mean, I can eat more of X, Y, Z. If they have that ability, what should they be looking for?
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, I mean, I think it comes down to having good, clean protein sources. So look for good, clean protein sources. And then you want to make sure that the fruits and vegetables you’re eating are high quality. So wash them, make sure that you’re getting off. I think everybody’s familiar now that pesticides are used on a lot of our fruits and vegetables. And those pesticides, if we’re not washing them, actually can affect your liver health because your liver is where those pesticides go to try to get them out of our body. So be sure you’re washing them. Make sure that you spend a couple minutes doing that. I know I used to roll, I’ll be honest, I used to roll my eyes at at my mom when she would tell me, and then I’d roll my eyes at my wife from time to time when she’d tell me that as well. But there is plenty of fact that that is the case with all of our fruits and vegetables. So be sure to wash them. And then you want to avoid, like we already mentioned, all those processed foods because those processed foods have a ton of additives that are not great for us. Okay. make sure that you’re avoiding most of those, if at all possible.
SPEAKER 16 :
Okay. Perfect. And for those of you listening, I would highly suggest that if you feel like, you know, I just don’t think that I’m operating, you know, my liver is operating at 100%. In fact, I maybe even have had a few tests that have said so. My doctors even said I need to be paying more attention to this. By all means, Centurion Labs would be a place to go. Ask them directly, as I just asked Troy a moment ago, you know, what would you do? What should you do? And there’s a lot of things, and Troy, I appreciate you saying there’s a lot of things that folks can do to help get their liver back on track. But folks, again, I’ve known folks that have lost their lives due to too much alcohol consumption. If there’s anything I can tell you to do right off the bat, just cut that back.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yes, absolutely. And then when you do that, add lots of water to your regimen. There you go. So the more water you drink, the more you’re able to flush that stuff out, and that just helps the liver a great deal.
SPEAKER 16 :
Troy, as always, you’re always a wealth of information. I learn something every time you’re on. Liver health is a big deal, as we mentioned throughout this last segment that we just did. It’s Men’s Health Month here in November. So all of you men especially, make sure you’re taking care of yourselves so that you’ll be around for your loved ones for a very, very long time. And Troy, thank you again for all that you do. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family and appreciate all you do for us.
SPEAKER 15 :
Thanks, John. Hope you guys have a great thing. We’ll do it.

SPEAKER 16 :
All right. Question of the day. Let me go ahead and get this done because we’ve been busy throughout this particular hour on this Health and Wellness Wednesday. In a study, those with the highest levels of optimism had almost a 40% lower risk of heart disease. So it is health and wellness. That applies. Thank you, Producer Ann, for throwing that in. So in a study, those with the highest levels of optimism, so people that look at the glass half full, Not half empty. I’m more of a realistic, it’s just half full. But I tend to be a little more optimistic probably than most. Anyways, you have a 40% higher, or sorry, lower risk. So in other words, your heart disease is less by 40% in those that are very optimistic. So good study, by the way. So it just shows you that, yes, the power of the mind has a lot to do even with our health. What percent, this is today’s question, what percent of Americans say they’re happier in autumn than in any other season? What percent of Americans say they’re happier in autumn than any other season? And I’m not one of these percentiles, by the way. I’m a spring guy. I like spring. It’s not that I don’t mind fall. Fall’s a great time. I love the weather and so on, the changing the colors and so on. But for me, it’s like, yeah, I know winter’s coming, though. That alone is kind of like, yeah. Because even though I’ve lived here my entire life, I could easily go somewhere where it’s warm all the time. i guess maybe because of what i’ve done with the automotive world and snow plowing and so on that i just know what the winters bring and the lack of daylight and so on so i’m i’m a spring guy i just love the springtime and what it means and things are growing and this new life is abounding and so on but so i’m not one of these in this percentile but i will give you a hint it’s more than you probably think so a lot of people Like autumn. Just that’s the question of the day. So put the number in there. What is that percentile? All right. One last thing that I want to close up today that I was talking to Rachel, who runs one of our other state stations here. We were just talking about, you know, what do you do when you don’t feel really well? And, you know, kind of what’s your daily routine and what’s my daily routine and so on. And she said, you should share this on air. I said, okay, health and wellness, I guess I can. So when I don’t feel well, and I have the same routine pretty much every day. You can ask my wife. Ask Charlie. I’m weird that way. I have the same routine. Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, doesn’t matter. I do pretty much the same thing every day. And I’m one of those where even though I work from home until I come here, And I’ve been working from home even in the business end of things, even before doing this show. But I’m a guy that gets up, gets in the shower, gets dressed. I put on what I’m going to have for work no matter what. And my wife and my family think I’m the weirdest weirdo in the world. But I wear a collared shirt pretty much every day, even on the weekends. It’s just what I do. It’s me. Now, to me, it’s a mental thing. Even when I don’t feel well, when I’m sick, I do the same thing. I get up, I shower, I get out of bed, I get myself ready. Even if I don’t feel super well and I might even have a little bit more of a lax day, I still do all of what I just said. Because to me, mentally, it makes me feel better. Just getting up, getting out of bed, getting that shower, fixing myself up. Not that I’m putting on makeup and all of what ladies do, but still, you know. Fixing your hair, doing the whole nine yards, you know, in my case, putting in my contacts, everything I do in the mornings. I do that even when I don’t feel well and I don’t miss too many days of work because of not feeling well. But even when I’m not well, I still do that. You can ask my wife and family. And even though they’ll even say, just stay in bed. No, to me, I feel better. getting up and doing things and getting into my routine and i understand there’s going to be days where people have the flu and they just can’t do that i’m not talking about that sick but even when you have a cold or whatever just getting up getting yourself ready i personally feel like there’s an added mental bonus to that back to our heart health talking about how you look at things optimistically. I do that in just all of the illness end of things. So just a little tip of what I do. All right, Cub Creek Heating and Air Conditioning. Make sure you’re dialed in with your furnace.
