Got a question that came in via email, and this comes from Mark, so we’ll ask Mark to Mark. What’s the recommendation concerning transmission fluid change on a 2024 Chevrolet Equinox all-wheel drive, 32,200 miles? Mark, I’ll let you field that one.
SPEAKER 10 :
Well, I’m assuming this is going to be a CVT transmission as well?
SPEAKER 07 :
Uh, I’d have to look that one up on a 2024 Equinox. Uh, hang on. Let me look and see that one. I don’t know, Mark. Um, let me see.
SPEAKER 10 :
I mean, generally for it’s a six, that’s a six speed.
SPEAKER 07 :
That’s a, that’s a 60, 46 speed.
SPEAKER 10 :
Okay, that’s a good transmission. It’s got a good reputation. We’ve had good luck with them. The fluid, you still want to change every 30,000, especially if you’re loading it up with any weight or taking it up the mountains. You know, harsh conditions are pretty much just driving in Denver, so even stop and go can be really tough on them.
SPEAKER 07 :
And you’re at 36, I mean, or 32,000, sorry. Is it an emergency right now? No. I mean, anywhere between now and probably that 40K mark, you’ve got some time. I mean, I wouldn’t, you know, again, this isn’t something that you’ve got to budget tomorrow to get done. Although I think you’re, to Mark’s point, you’re at a point where. I would get that done sooner than later. And then to Mark’s point, if you’re somebody that lives in the mountains and you’ve used it a little bit heavier than K, you may be in a little bit more of a of a rush to actually get that done versus letting that, you know, put that off just a little bit. But reality is, yeah, you’re kind of at that point where it’s time to do that.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, transmission is just their life gets shorter as they get hotter. And the more viscous, the better the fluid is. Sorry, less viscous. Right. The longer the transmission lasts. So if the fluid breaks down, the transmission gets hotter. Its life gets shorter in direct relationship. We have the BG low viscosity transmission fluid. If you have concerns, if you have extra weight or do drive in the mountains, that fluid will protect your transmission even better. It’s more expensive, but just getting that fluid changed and keeping it fresh is going to definitely extend the life of your transmission.
SPEAKER 07 :
All right, and Scott just sent me something. Scott Watley, he’ll be on a little bit later here for Sportsman of Colorado, and he just sent me a, it’s probably somebody that’s trying to work with him, a non-refundable deposit hold agreement. This is for a used car, by the way. And this is a totally non-refundable, meaning if you don’t buy this vehicle, you’re not, in this case, it’s 500 bucks, you’re not getting this $500 back. This is a seven-day hold, meaning somebody is charging you $500 to hold the vehicle for the next seven days. Run. Run, run, run.
SPEAKER 10 :
Right, that’s a big red flag.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, if they’re charging you 500 bucks… To hold a vehicle, first of all, there is no vehicle, in my opinion, there’s no vehicle out there worth spending $500 for a hold on. I don’t care what it is. I don’t care if it’s brand new. I mean, it could be the rarest of all vehicles. Am I going to spend $500 for a hold? First of all, if I want to buy it, I’ll buy it. I don’t need it held. Right, right. So I’d have to ask the first question, why are we holding this for seven days? Is it because we need to get our money rounded up? Do we not have financing? I mean, what’s the scoop? Why are we waiting seven days to actually buy a vehicle? Number two, what’s so special about this vehicle? I can tell from looking at it, there’s nothing special about it. It’s a 2017 Lincoln with 90-some thousand miles. Sorry, nothing special about that vehicle that I need to spend 500 bucks for a hold on. So… I hate to say this, but I’d probably lose the 500 and buy a car somewhere else, and I never would have done this in the first place. This goes against everything I would ever believe in doing, folks.
SPEAKER 10 :
That red flag would just tell me this company isn’t great. I would not want to work with them anyway.
SPEAKER 07 :
Thank you, Mark. I would look at it exactly the same way. So here’s the reality. And, Scott, thank you for sending me this. And what he said was people don’t listen. No, they don’t, Scott. They do not listen. In this particular case, and those of you out there listening to me, please, please, please, please, please. Never, ever get into a situation like this. I don’t care if it’s a new car. I don’t care if it’s a used car. Now, I understand the dealer side. A dealer may say, you know what? I can hold this car for 24 hours. I’ll put a hold sign on it. If you’re not back to do something by tomorrow at this same time, next person that comes along, we’re going to sell it to. I know other dealers that will say something to the effect of, you know what? We’re not holding anything. Maybe we can put a non-refundable deposit on it, but the reality is we don’t hold cars. If you want to buy it, let’s get a deal done now. Otherwise, the guy that walks in next wants to buy it. It’s for sale. And by the way, as a dealer, that’s exactly what I would do. If you want to buy the car, it’s here now. Get your money out. Let’s buy it. If you don’t want to buy it and the next guy does, guess what? Guy that comes along with the first money, he’s going to buy the car. And that’s how I would look at it. I would never in my entire life think of charging someone a $500 non-refundable deposit, and it just wouldn’t happen. So personally, for me, any dealer that would put something like this in front of me, I would be walking. Out the door.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, I don’t like that.
SPEAKER 07 :
Saying, I’m not buying that car nor any other car from you because this is not the proper way to do business. And it’s not the proper way to do business. There is nothing special about a 2017 Lincoln. I’m sorry, folks. Maybe there’s a lot of Lincoln lovers out there. Mark’s laughing at me. But maybe there’s a lot of Lincoln lovers and one of you would disagree with me. But in my book, there isn’t a 2017 of anything.
SPEAKER 10 :
Well, any car.

Worth holding.

Sorry. Any car. They’re not that unique.

I mean, and if it were, and it was something that, you know, super low miles and maybe it’s something that you really want and you’ve been looking a long time. Well, first of all, if that’s the case and you’ve been looking for a long time and it’s the car of your dreams and you want that car, you’re going to buy it anyways.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, you should be ready for the sale.
SPEAKER 07 :
Thank you, Mark. You’ve got your money. You’ve got everything else rounded up. There’s nothing else there you need to have that vehicle held for. So, again, this is a major, major, major red flag. I won’t name the dealership just for obvious reasons. I’m not going to do that. I won’t name the dealership name. But I would not do business with anybody that put anything like this in front of me that made me pay $500 to hold a vehicle, especially a used vehicle with 90-some thousand miles on it. Sorry, folks. I’m not doing that. And you shouldn’t either. And this is where you call the guys at Ridgeline, Justin and Josh, and ask them. They can help you out when it comes to buying new and used cars. And that’s something I get questions on all the time. And I guess I don’t say that enough. If you have something you want to buy as far as a used vehicle is concerned, call the guys at Ridgeline first. They will do their best to find you a car. If they don’t have one, they get lots of cars that are offered to them to not only buy, they go to auctions and so on. They may not have the car you want today, but they might be able to have that car in the next week. So, you know, again, whatever you’re looking for, give them a call, let them know what it is, and then they can take it from there.
SPEAKER 14 :
Scott, what’s going on, man? Hey, you got into it, man. I’m just so fired up listening. I had to call you. But here’s basically the deal. They did the $500, and like you say, why sign something that locks you in? The person did listen by taking it to a mechanic. They had the car 48 hours. It needed $1,500 worth of work, which, let’s be honest, I don’t care where you buy a car with that mileage, you’re probably going to need that amount of work.
SPEAKER 07 :
You’re probably going to have that.
SPEAKER 14 :
That’s true. Yes, yes, yes. But they took it back to the dealer and said, hey, it needs this amount of work, and, you know, is there some negotiation? And they said no, and they said, well, we don’t want the car. And they said… Well, you’re not getting your $500 back. And they said, we’ve had it 48 hours just to get it checked. They paid $250 to get it checked out. So just a terrible deal. And I am working on it until Monday, trying to get the dealer on to give them a chance to… And you know what? Hey, every business has the right to set up their business.
SPEAKER 07 :
I agree. I mean, right, wrong, or otherwise, you’re right, Scott. They have the right to do whatever they do. And in this particular case, somebody agreed to do what they offered. What I’m saying, though, and I think what you’re saying as well, is this is a bad deal. I would have never taken the car to even get it checked having signed this.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, it’s a buyer beware.
SPEAKER 07 :
To me, that’s a red flag.
SPEAKER 14 :
Exactly. Yep. Sure. And so, uh, Hey, and this is what I’m, people don’t listen. I mean, you, you’ve got some guys you work with. We worked with Dan at Lend-A-London. So I said, look, just leave me over there. We ended up getting him a car, Dan, Dan.

different things you know and and so everything worked from that standpoint but then they’re wanting their money back and i’m like man you don’t give me much room when you sign something like that you know right you know yeah no you’re right no and that’s what you know scott this thing i don’t think a lot of people understand is when you’ve put your pen to paper in this case probably given a five hundred dollars and you sign that this isn’t coming back unless you buy a car and it’s applied to the car reality is you’re gonna be out 500 bucks yep sorry i mean i hate to say it that way scott but you’re you’re thankful it’s 500 bucks yeah it’s not five grand but the reality is you’re gonna be out 500 i i highly doubt unless these guys want to you know be in their good graces and actually give the 500 bucks back i don’t see that and really scott they’re not out 500 they’re out 750 right yeah you’re you’re a thousand percent right out of it that was my next point they didn’t just stop there i’m glad they listened but then i

Yeah, this is a simple text message even. Should I put $500 down on a deposit for a car? You know what my answer would be back automatically without even knowing the car? No. I don’t even have to know the car, Scott. No.

But you brought up a good point. They took away their negotiating power right up front.

Correct. It’s like, why would you do that? Yes, absolutely, Mark. Yes. Yep. Yep. Well, good deal, bud. No, Scott, I appreciate that. It’s a great topic because people get sucked into things they shouldn’t do.

Well, I appreciate you, man. Thanks for sending that. No, I appreciate it. Yeah. Guys, please, buyer beware. You know, a contract’s a contract, which this basically is. You’ve entered into that. You’ve signed this deposit hold agreement. It says right in big, bold letters, non-refundable.
SPEAKER 10 :
That’s the key word right there.
SPEAKER 07 :
It’s right at the top. I mean, they didn’t hide this. It wasn’t like they didn’t tell you it wasn’t refundable. It’s literally in big, bold letters, non-refundable deposit hold agreement. And you signed it and gave them 500 bucks. You’re not getting your money back. And Again, am I against this company for doing so? I wouldn’t do business with them. They can do business, like Scott said, they can choose to do business however they want to. It’s completely up to them. I wouldn’t do business with them because I wouldn’t put $500 down on a used car. I wouldn’t put $500 down on any car.

If they won’t let you take it to inspect it, there’s another red flag.
SPEAKER 07 :
The only time I have ever put money on a car is there was, I believe, when I bought my first C8, my first Corvette, to get an order in because they were so popular, you had to give a deposit. to get yourself in line to buy that car. Now, that one happened to be refundable, so I was able to put a deposit on. If I wanted it back, I could, or they would apply it to the car. And they knew that if I didn’t want it, somebody else in line would. But if I wanted to keep my place in line, I had to keep, I think at that time it was like $1,500, and you had to give the $1,500 and keep your place in line. It wasn’t non-refundable, but that’s what it took to get your place in line. That’s about the only time. I’ve ever given anybody any money on the front side, and that’s a very unique situation. Those don’t happen very often. That is for somebody that’s a car person that’s looking for a particular car. In that case, I was ordering a new car. That’s a totally different set of circumstances than putting $500 down on a used car. I’m sorry, a used car is a used car is a used car. And there’s going to be another one just like it somewhere else in town. So reality is there’s nothing unique about, in this particular case especially, there is nothing unique about this car to put $500 on. I’m sorry, there just isn’t. And by the way, this is true whether it’s a dealer, whether it’s somebody that you find on Marketplace, whatever the case. Do not put any money on the front side until you know for sure you’re going to buy that car. You have all of your ducks in a row. You’ve got your financing lined out. You’ve got all of that stuff done. Then you just go buy the car and call it good.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, and also keep in mind when you’re looking at the used cars, you’re going to have to put $1,500, $2,000 into most cars. Cars aren’t perfectly fixed up and maintained and then sold immediately. That just doesn’t happen.

All right, several of you texting in your worst jobs, which a couple of you, just like me, grew up in the car business and had to do the same thing I did and understand full well what I’m talking about with cleaning the drains and so on. A couple of you also said that you follow the same dealer owner. I believe he’s out of Texas that does the Ford. He’s got his own social media. He’s a Ford dealer, talks about all the things that we’re talking about right in line with what we talk about here on a regular basis, by the way. And he’s coming at it from a dealership point of view versus what we talk about. And I appreciate him, by the way. I think he’s a great guy to follow. And then I did have some he must be somebody from either either knows a dealer or is a dealer or something talking about in Colorado. Now it’s getting pretty standard for used car lots. to ask for that seven-day hold and putting a nonrefundable deposit down. I’m just going to tell you straight, and I responded this way, not from either or not. I would never buy a car from anybody that’s asking that. First of all, if you’re not ready to buy the car, that’s on you. Second of all, if I need that car held, I don’t know why I would need it held. Am I thinking about it? Do I not know I want to buy? What am I doing, by the way, in that particular case? A, I wouldn’t put a deposit on anything. If I’m ready to buy, I’m ready to buy. I’m not giving a deposit on anything because when I’m ready to buy, I’m going to buy. Second of all, why do they need a hold? And why do they need money down to hold it?
SPEAKER 10 :
It certainly isn’t something you should have to do to go have your car inspected or checked out once before you buy it.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, and that’s where I was going with that. So, Mark, thank you for saying that. I mean, if I’m having to give them money to hold the car so I can now go get it inspected to determine if I’m going to buy it or not, that’s on them, not me. I mean, my feeling is if they’re not going to give me at least 24, 48 hours to get the car inspected to find out if I want to buy it or not on a used car – and go through that process, then I’m buying a car someplace else. If that’s what you’re requiring from me to actually go get that car inspected, then I’m buying a car someplace else. And for all of you listening, there’s a gazillion used cars out there. I mean, no offense, you don’t have to buy that car there. You can go take your pick as to where you want to go buy a car, and I wouldn’t buy one. So whoever, I appreciate the text message, but I’m not buying a car from anybody that does that. And I, throughout my career, have bought a lot of cars. Still do. And I’m not buying a car that way. If that’s the requirement from somebody to buy a car, I’m buying that car someplace else because I’m not doing that. So I appreciate the text message. I really do. And I thank you for sending that. But if that’s the standard now in Colorado, we’re in trouble because the used car business is probably going to suffer because guess what? I will rail on this every single week until that changes. So if you’re a used car lot, and or even a new car lot that’s requiring that, shame on you. And you’re going to have to prove to me why you feel that’s a necessity, I should say, to do. Because if that’s the particular situation that you’re in and that’s what you’re required to do for your business model, you’re not doing something correct. And I’ll coach you on that if you’d like, but that’s a bad business model. Joe, go ahead.

John, just an object lesson. I don’t know if you watch these videos, this guy, your Royal Garage, he’s the black and red shirt.

Yeah, man bun.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, the little man bun. I just saw one. It’s an object less about buying parts than Amazon. He had this Nissan Murano. They had it in three, four times. The car wouldn’t shut off. It would start uncommanded. They replaced all the engine modules. They went through the wiring, couldn’t figure out. And he asked the guy, well, what did you do before this problem started happening? He said, the only thing I did was replace the hood latch assembly. And so he said, well, give me the old one. So he takes the old one. He puts the old one. And the old one had a broken piece of metal. It wouldn’t clip. He hooks up the old broken hood latch, and the problem goes away. He puts the new hood latch back in, and the problem reappears. And what it turned out to be, the guy ordered his hood latch. The hood latch has a little, not a transistor, a little.
SPEAKER 07 :
There’s a sensor in it that knows whether the hood’s shut or not.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right. And he bought off Amazon, and apparently that little sensor.
SPEAKER 07 :
Probably had the wrong resistance in it.
SPEAKER 11 :
Whatever. And it was sending a signal.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yep.
SPEAKER 11 :
Put the hoods open. No, but it wouldn’t let the car shut off, even. And, in fact, he had no hood latch sensor connected, and the car functioned perfectly. So it worked fine with the old broken hood latch. It worked fine with no hood latch. But as soon as he put the Amazon hood latch assembly in, and they spent days and days and thousands of dollars replacing engine control modules.
SPEAKER 07 :
All for a $40 part, probably.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right, which the customer probably saved $10 by buying it off Amazon.
SPEAKER 07 :
Probably, if that.
SPEAKER 11 :
That’s a great lesson.
SPEAKER 07 :
And that happens, and we see that all the time. Now, the one thing I will say is the one thing that I was always big on and I try to instruct all of my clients to do is you’ve got to get the full story on that car as to why the customer dropped it off in the first place. What have you done to this car prior? So the only thing I’m going to blame the guys at Royalty on is why didn’t they get that story on the front side?
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, about the hood latch, that I replaced the hood latch.
SPEAKER 07 :
Why didn’t they ask that up front? They should have.
SPEAKER 11 :
They should have, but it was just amazing to me. You would never think, I didn’t even, John, if you asked me, does the hood latch assembly have a microprocessor in it? I would have said, I don’t think so, but apparently they do.
SPEAKER 07 :
A lot do, and it can be the front, the trunk, the doors. I mean, those things are in a lot of places, especially on late-model modern vehicles. And, again, this is where—and I think the guys at Royalty, I mean, I kind of like those guys, kind of don’t. It depends on what they’re doing. I think they’ve created a huge social media following, which, by the way, is probably making as much money as the actual shop itself is. That’s a whole other conversation. They’ve gotten so big on that end of it. And some of their social media stuff, I like some of it. I’m like— No offense, you guys are running down a path that at the end of the day, yeah, it’s great for social media, but you’re really not accomplishing anything. Their whole oil filter spiel that they went through was utter nonsense, to be honest with you, because they got all bent because some of the Napa gold filters they were getting were coming out of China, and they got all butthurt over that and did a whole big deal out of it. As it turned out, it was not a burger when it was all said and done, but they made a big to-do out of it, and it’s kind of what made them famous, to be honest with you.
SPEAKER 11 :
And, you know, anything you see on social media, you have to take with a grain of salt.
SPEAKER 07 :
Correct.
SPEAKER 11 :
You know, you’ve got to be able to pick. You know, you’ve got to be able to pick. It’s like panning for gold, John. You’ve got to pick out the nuggets from the rocks.
SPEAKER 07 :
Very true.

Very true. And I thought this was a great nugget, that something as simple as a hoodlatch sensor.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, and what that really also says, Joe, is don’t buy your parts someplace else and have somebody else install them. At the end of the day, let them procure the part for you.

And, you know, for all I know, it could have been some other garage repair. True.

Could have been, although I’ll be honest, Joe, unless it’s a backyard mechanic, very, very, very few shops are buying parts off Amazon and putting them on the car because there’s no warranty in doing so.

You would hope so. And whoever, whether it was the owner of the car himself who said, I can do this. Yeah. Probably the owner said, I can do this. You know, it’s two bolts. What the heck? I mean, it literally was two bolts, John.

And so no doubt he saved $20 on the hood latch assembly. Yep. And cost himself several thousand dollars and weeks in the shop.

And Richard, what have you driven lately? This particular car, by the way, I got a chance to get behind the wheel of as well, but let’s go ahead and talk about it.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yes, this will be a fun one, Dad. It’s the 2025 Lexus TX350. This is the F Sport handling trim, and the price for this vehicle came in just under $70,000 at about $69,430. This was also the all-wheel drive version, Dad. It’s got the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. Turbo engine, 275 horsepower. Like we mentioned, all-wheel drive. It’s got the F-Sport tuned suspension. It’s got an F-Sport exterior styling. The 22-inch wheels on the panoramic glass roof. Let’s see here. Heated and ventilated second-row captain’s chairs. Heated and ventilated… front power seats. You’ve got a third row in this vehicle, Dad. And for those that are familiar with not only Lexus, Dad, but also Toyota, this is the Lexus version of the Grand Highlander, right? And that’s just the best way I know how to describe it. So if you look at this vehicle, see it down… driving down the road. It’s really, in my opinion, a really good-looking vehicle. And in terms of functionality, which we’ll get to here in just a second, great. It was introduced in 2024, Dad. The F-Sport handling is new for this year. Also, the 12.3-inch digital instrument panel is now standard. and there’s automatic curve speed reduction for the cruise control. All of that to say, folks, this is a three-row SUV that is really phenomenal for a family. And if you’re looking for… I’ll be honest, I’ve got a family of six. If you’re looking for a vehicle… that is a people mover, not necessarily going to take you a ton of places off-road, but you need to get to baseball practice or football or soccer or hockey or swim lessons or whatever it is, or school. And maybe you’ve only got three kiddos, but maybe you want to have room for that other friend that hops in. And you want to do so in style, that, right, of the luxury that Lexus provides with the soft-touch materials. And I know in a lot of cases, some dealer benefits that we’ll get to here in a second. This is the vehicle for you. It drove really well. I really like the turbocharged engine. And again, you don’t necessarily get in a lot of these vehicles, but I think you will enjoy this vehicle the same way that I did.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, car worked great. I had a chance to get behind the wheel for a couple of days, and it worked very well. One thing about this car that… Actually, I really enjoyed, and I didn’t get into the technology end of things and study how they’re doing this, but the deceleration end of things on the car, it feels very much like you’re driving an EV, I guess you could say. The compression braking that they’ve put into the powertrain is probably the best way for me to say that, Richard. Works great. You literally feel yourself slowing down without the need to really use the brakes. Brakes are still needed, of course, to come to a complete stop and so on. But as far as driving it, you almost feel like you have one pedal driving like an EV has.
SPEAKER 08 :
You did, and I’m with you. I didn’t quite expect that. And normally, folks, unless you get an EV vehicle, even some hybrids that don’t quite have the sort of deceleration that this vehicle did, which made it actually easier to drive, and you combine that with a lot of the other technology features, i.e. the 360-degree camera and kind of the cross-traffic alerts and some of that, it’s really not difficult to drive because this is a larger SUV.
SPEAKER 07 :
It’s a bigger car, yeah, absolutely, yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
Not the largest by any means, and not that that’s a bad thing, but it is a little bit bigger, like you said. So it felt, when they combine that technology, it doesn’t necessarily feel like you’re driving a larger SUV. It sort of almost feels like you’re driving, I guess, well, I’ll just say it’s a smaller SUV, right? Not quite a sedan, but definitely something that’s smaller in size. Because this, I believe, is equipped with the 5,000-pound towing capacity as well. So you could do kind of a small trailer, that sort of thing, depending on where you’re going. And as far as room, folks, the third row, again, I did put the kids in there, put them in with some booster seats. They were able to get back there. Even with that being said, there was still room for some backpacks and some cargo behind the third row. And that’s always the question, right, Dad? A lot of these vehicles, they say they have a third row, but that third row is really not a full third row. In this case, I can confidently, well, I can’t say a full-size adult is going to fit back there, Dad, but you’ll be able to get someone up until 12, 13, 14 pretty easily, depending on their size, without too many issues. And, again, I really enjoyed it. And one thing I’ll note, and I don’t know if this is for all Lexus dealers, but I can’t say, but if you’re looking at maybe comparing this to similar vehicles or maybe not the luxury, I do know that a lot of Lexus dealers, well, actually, if you take it into the dealer, you know, needs its normal service, whatever it is, will give you a courtesy car to drive, which you don’t necessarily see in a lot of cases. And if you go with maybe, again, a different manufacturer or whatever it might be, you may not get that. And so if you are limited in your car options or whatever it is, that may set it apart. However, we are going to put the caveat, Dad, which is that they don’t know if every dealer… Every Lexus dealer does that, but it’s definitely something that we noted on a personal experience with just some friends and family out there. But outside of that, really enjoyed this vehicle. Last thing we’ll say, Dad, is fuel economy, 20 and 26 for an average of 23, and I think you and I were right there, right about 24, 25 miles per gallon, which is really, I guess the only negative I would say, Dad, I would love it to have a little bit larger of a fuel tank. being as big of a car as it is because after about a week’s worth of normal driving, we were kind of running on the low side on the fuel side of things. So that’s the only thing there. But outside of that, I encourage folks to check this vehicle out. Again, 2025 Lexus TX350 F Sport handling. This was the all-wheel drive model. All right, a couple of questions that came in via email that I will answer that we’ll take a little bit of time with, by the way. So those of you that emailed in, rest assured I’ll get to those here in just one minute. Paul in Denver, though, you’re next. Go ahead.
SPEAKER 12 :
Hey, John. My vehicle has an LM2 battery, which is a liquid nitrogen battery. I was surprised by it because I’ve had the same car before. Mine is a 2023, but I had a 2019 version and it did not have that type. So Subaru has changed for a lot of their vehicles now to have an LN2 battery in it. Now, I started doing some research on the batteries because I had never seen or heard anything about it. My understanding is they’re typically used to support a stop-start feature. or regenerative braking, neither of which my particular Subaru has. So it was kind of strange initially thinking about why they would put it in there. My guess is that they probably got a great deal of Interstate who supplies their batteries for them. and was projecting they’d just be able to get a whole lot of the same batteries for many of their models.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, that, and sometimes it’s where the battery is also mounted that can require – these are AGM batteries for all of you that are listening. So in some cases, Paul, it’s also where is that battery located, meaning if it’s got any kind of – potential off-gassing that might cause a problem for the cabin, especially batteries, always batteries that are mounted inside trunks, and sometimes they’re underneath the floorboard area and so on. In those cases, they’re always going to be an AGM. Now, in your case, that’s not where it’s mounted, but maybe it’s in a position where they felt like the off-gassing might be a problem.
SPEAKER 12 :
No, it’s in the same position that my 2019 has been in.
SPEAKER 07 :
Then I don’t have any idea why. And you wouldn’t necessarily have to replace it with one of those, by the way.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, right. So it’s either gone bad completely. I’m still working on some diagnostics on it because at one point it was at 20% and CCA and you know, even after charging it.
SPEAKER 07 :
So I’m still working on… I will say this about AGMs, and this is what I have found on a personal basis, that they go bad just like other batteries do. In fact, I think when they fail, typically what happens is something has failed internally. There’s an internal short or something has come apart, which can happen, whether it’s a regular battery, an AGM, or whatever. And I think people get this misconception that AGMs are somehow tougher of a battery than any others. No, it’s just a different technology as far as how the battery is built. It doesn’t mean they’re any tougher or any better, by the way, than another battery. They’re definitely more money. Yeah, but they fail, Paul. I’ve had one. I mean, I’ve had them fail. They fail, absolutely. They don’t give you much warning either. No, and they’ll just like, done, I’m done. I’m not doing any more. There’s no warning in them. That’s the one thing about them I don’t like is it’s not even a slow progression. It’s just like overnight, okay, I’m done. Also, what most people don’t understand is some of you that use battery tenders and things along those lines, they require a different tender to even keep their charge up than a regular battery requires.
SPEAKER 12 :
So here’s something that you brought up that I’m confused about because everything that I’ve read, remember I started from a point of ignorance on the LN, the liquid nitrogen batteries, but what I’m reading is they’re different from… glass mat batteries. And even I spoke to the main distributor for Interstate, which is out of Colorado Springs. He covers that territory, and he differentiated them. Now, Interstate has some great AGM batteries because they use the pure lead. But they’re not using liquid nitrogen in their configuration. So I’m not understanding why you’re representing that the LN batteries are glass matte batteries. Because that’s not my understanding. I mean, again, I plead ignorance on this.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, and I’m by no means an expert when it comes to, you know, AGMs versus the LN2s. I’ve always been under the understanding that it’s just a matter of, to your point, how they’re constructed, but essentially both doing the same thing. So I’ve never known them to be much different from one to the other.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, they’re…
SPEAKER 07 :
According to what I’m reading… And I’ve always understood that the LN2 has more to do with the size and construction of the battery. In other words, like other batteries, you can have a 24-24F, depending upon its application. I always thought the LN2s were more of the construction of, but still being a basic glass mat battery.
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, they’re using liquid nitrogen, and… And it allows them to store energy in a different way.
SPEAKER 07 :
Maybe you know something that I don’t know, Paul, but that’s never been my understanding on an LN2. I always thought that an LN2 was just a different designation in how that battery is built for its application, not in how it’s actually constructed and built. So you’re telling me something I’ve never heard.
SPEAKER 12 :
OK, well, maybe you can cover it another time. Because I’m reading this literally. I just pulled up one of my references that I read prior. So it’s liquid nitrogen. It’s connected to the electrodes. And the liquid nitrogen is, when the battery is charged, it’s pumped into the tank where it’s stored, whatever. And it’s discharged, the liquid nitrogen is released. So in an automobile battery, in the L2 battery, and it’s cold temperature is saying it’s what’s used to generate the electricity. And it has to do with thermal electricity as compared to what would typically be in a standard vehicle.
SPEAKER 10 :
Well, it’s a battery, so it doesn’t generate electricity.
SPEAKER 07 :
Stores it.
SPEAKER 10 :
It stores it only. Right.
SPEAKER 07 :
And, again, even the stuff that I’ve read in the past, Paul, what you’re telling me is all news to me. And I’ve never known nitrogen to – nitrogen is extreme. As you know, liquid nitrogen is so cold that it’s what they use to freeze off even cancer spots or moles and things like that on your body. Dermatologists use it all the time for that type of a purpose. I’ve never known it to be extreme. used as a way to construct a battery, that this is all news to me.
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, that’s why, I mean, when you think about it, LN, it was strange because when I saw LN, what does LN mean? And it’s on the battery, it says group size LN2. So I literally called the Subaru, I was trying to look up LN2 group size, or group sizes for my vehicle, and it just said LN2. And when I called the Subaru parts guy, Subaru parts department at a dealership, I said, what type of battery is this? What, what is the group size? And it says, it’s just LN2, but what type of battery is it? He didn’t know what group size it is. It’s just this LN2. Now LN, you think about liquid nitrogen, LN, that makes sense. The other thing I saw that I read was that we’re a typical, uh, number of cycles that a, uh, standard battery has the, um, The LN2s have significantly more. Again, that makes sense when I read that it’s typically used for start-stop vehicles.
SPEAKER 07 :
Sure.
SPEAKER 12 :
Because they’re having to go on and on and on. I mean, it’s in the range of hundreds of thousands of start cycles. And as compared to, I think it’s 60,000 for a regular battery. So that’s what I’m dealing with. I don’t know. I’d love to learn more about it because I’m still testing my vehicle. I mean, I’ve got a snap-on battery tester, and at one point it said it was 20% cranking amps. Which means it’s probably, I mean, honestly, it’s probably pretty accurate, Paul. Well, I tested it again after I drove it because for a while I hadn’t used it for like three, four days, which shouldn’t. Shouldn’t matter. No, shouldn’t matter. And so I really don’t have anything else on it. And then I charged it up again and I driven it around a little bit and it went up from there. to still low, but it wasn’t 20%. So I’m just monitoring it for now.
SPEAKER 07 :
And I would, again, I’m not debating anything on here, and I’m reading different things even on the Internet where in some case, it’s funny because I’m reading all sorts of stuff where LN2 is just the size, LN2 is shorthand for liquid nitrogen, although I’m not convinced that that’s filled with liquid nitrogen.
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, I mean, that’s what I’m calling it.
SPEAKER 07 :
I’m not convinced it is.
SPEAKER 12 :
It’s a strange thought. I mean, I get it. I get it.
SPEAKER 07 :
I’m reading so many different things on it that I am not convinced that it’s got liquid nitrogen inside of it.
SPEAKER 12 :
And apparently the parts department doesn’t know what the heck group size it is.
SPEAKER 07 :
I always thought LN2 was just the size of the battery in its application. Now, if somebody else is listening and can correct me on any of this, please let me know. I am by no means an AGM expert other than I know they fail just like any other battery does. And what I do know is when they fail, it’s like immediate. There is no warning. Right. That I do know.
SPEAKER 12 :
It says here… One of the main challenges is the need for a liquid nitrogen fluid, which can add complexity and cost to the system, low power output. Now, this has – it’s rated – my particular version is at 620 cca.
SPEAKER 07 :
Coal cranking amps, yeah.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah. And I tell you, the distributor says that it’s really a very – and what I’ve read also, which is consistent, because I’m always – Talking to people about these things and asking them and then comparing it to what I’ve read. Sure, sure, sure, sure.
SPEAKER 07 :
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 12 :
Because I’m starting from the ignorant position on the science of it. And but they were all consistent in saying it’s low quality. uh level version of an agm okay it’s a it’s equivalent of a cheapy agm okay okay you know now it doesn’t mean it is an agm and like i said interstate you know their batteries uh well they have different levels of batteries but interstate has a couple of levels where they use pure lead And, obviously, they’re more expensive because you can buy an AGM battery pretty inexpensively at a Walmart or whatever, you know, for a little over $100. Yeah.

I think I’ve sent you a little video on how to defeat that, and the part number is like $10 on Amazon. Now, some of the newer cars now, they have a switch, and you can press that, like my wife’s car.
SPEAKER 07 :
But it’s every time you get in.

Yeah, but you’ve got to remember to press that every once in a while, you know, and so on and so forth. On my 2019 Cadillac that I just bought, It was old enough that didn’t have that switch on there. And I replaced that pigtail in there for $10 on Amazon. Works perfectly.

The stop-start is gone.

Yeah, and for some of you that don’t want that, there’s a defeat device. That’s what it’s called, a start-stop defeat device. And there’s more than one out there, too, Bob, depending upon what vehicle you’re driving and what you’re looking to do and so on. And personally, this is what you want to do. Some people still like it. Some people don’t. Some people just hit the button. This is personal preference as to what you guys want to do.
SPEAKER 06 :
I don’t know why any would like it. It’s an absolute nuisance. It’s totally ridiculous. It was something that was federally mandated. You know how I love that.
SPEAKER 16 :
Right.
SPEAKER 06 :
But anyway, for $10, most cars that don’t have the button that you can select each and every time you get in the car.
SPEAKER 07 :
The other thing, folks, I’ve known to do real quick is you can actually just jumper the switch, meaning it’s engaged all the time and you never have to hit the button. And that’s essentially what some of these harnesses that you’re putting in are doing.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, and it doesn’t turn on any – It turns on nothing. No alarms on the car, nothing. Right. The stop start, gone. Yeah. Ten bucks.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, good idea. All right. All right. No, appreciate it, Bob. Thanks very much. Lonnie, let’s do this. We’ve only got a minute here before we go to our top of the hour. I want to give you plenty of time when we come back. Got a great question, by the way, a young person up in Nebraska asking, you know, why do a lot of the diesels, when they’re so hot out, when you shift – You can hear the engine, the engine fan, they just seem really loud. And yeah, that is, by the way, not a dumb question, great question. And in that particular situation, it is the fan clutch being engaged. Those diesels, any engine, by the way, when they get hot will do it. But the diesels, you especially notice it because… They are shifting at a lower RPM, and they’re moving a lot of air to keep things cool. A diesel engine generates more heat than a gas engine does. Most people don’t realize that, but they’re a heat generator because of the way the combustion works. And so, yes, they will generate heat, and they’re kicking that fan clutch on. And when you’re shifting, you’ll hear that fan clutch at that time because it’s fully engaged, and that’s exactly what you’re hearing. Great question, by the way. Nothing dumb about that at all.
