Join John Rush for an in-depth dialogue with Jimmy Graham, a leader in school safety and security training. As they dissect the barriers posed by existing administrative structures and budget allocations, Graham offers practical solutions that challenge the status quo. Instead of dwelling on the impasses, they discuss viable pathways to implement effective security measures in schools, touching on everything from budget reallocation to community-based protection. This episode is not only a call to action for policy makers but a guide for concerned parents looking for ways to advocate for safer educational environments.
SPEAKER 04 :
This is Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 03 :
You are going to shut your damn yapper and listen for a change because I got you pegged, sweetheart. You want to take the easy way out because you’re scared. And you’re scared because if you try and fail, there’s only you to blame. Let me break this down for you. Life is scary. Get used to it. There are no magical fixes.
SPEAKER 08 :
With your host, John Rush.
SPEAKER 12 :
My advice to you is to do what your parents did.
SPEAKER 13 :
Get a job, sir. You haven’t made everybody equal. You’ve made them the same, and there’s a big difference.
SPEAKER 11 :
Let me tell you why you’re here. You’re here because you know something. What you know you can’t explain, but you feel it. You’ve felt it your entire life, that there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there. It is this feeling that has brought you to me.
SPEAKER 10 :
Are you crazy? Am I? Or am I so sane that you just blew your mind?
SPEAKER 06 :
It’s Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush, presented by Cub Creek Heating and Air Conditioning.
SPEAKER 18 :
And we are back. Our number two, Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Jimmy Graham joining us now. Jimmy, welcome back. How are you, sir?
SPEAKER 09 :
I’m good, sir.
SPEAKER 18 :
How are you? I’m good. It’s been a while since we’ve had you on, and I appreciate you joining us. For those of you that don’t know Jimmy, he’s a veteran Navy SEAL, former CIA protective officer, founder also of Able Shepherd, and there was a lot going on last week, and your timing and being here is perfect.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, rough week, man, rough week.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, that’s probably putting it mildly. And you’re an expert in a lot of these areas. We’ve had you on in the past, even talking about, you know, how do we get school security? You know, how do we make that better? How do we change some things that are going on in that end of things? We’ve talked about other things throughout the years. But, you know, given that that’s one of your expert areas, and, of course, the whole Charlie Kirk end of things is a whole other topic. But let’s get into the school sides of things first, Jimmy.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, yeah. So Evergreen, obviously we’re back to school, so we start putting out what can people do, and there’s actually, I think it’s Tuesday, coming up this Tuesday for Douglas County School Board, having a meeting, and they’ve got all the speakers out there. The problem, in my quick opinion, is you’ve got kind of the people that are the problem saying what’s the solution.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, so expand on that. I mean, and I don’t disagree with you at all. I agree with you fully on that. And the problem we’ve got is, well, I can go down the list of the issues we have on the school sides of things and the whole excuses as to why we can’t do this, that, and the other. And the reality is the budgets, Jimmy, are completely, you know, lopsided. But explain this event and explain what you just meant.
SPEAKER 09 :
Which means that there is – What other profession do you have the problem, the people that are a problem, you put them in charge of the solution. So many, many times, you know, we’ve talked many times about this, when there’s been failures in schools and all that, you’ve got a roving patrol, meaning an officer, an SRO, that goes from school to school to school, and they cover three, four different schools with one person. Like, that’s not the answer. One person is not the answer. We need to take a more aggressive stance on what are we really doing to protect our kids. We’re really good at protecting our money. and are diplomats but we won’t apply the same skill sets and standard of protection to our children.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, and as I said earlier, a lot of this, Jimmy, is because we’ve got budgets that are lopsided. We have public school systems whereby the admins keep growing, yet even in defense of teachers, even their salaries aren’t growing at the same rate. The reality is at the end of the day, we’re not willing to spend money on facilities like we should for lots of things facilities-wise, not just for somebody being there to be security for the kids, but even in the systems themselves, Jimmy, we’re not willing to invest in those things.
SPEAKER 09 :
That’s right. That’s right, because we want bigger schools and bigger, like you said, overheads, like administrators and multiple principals. I truly believe that the answer is going to be smaller schools and more of them, smaller churches and more of them.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, and we could talk about that for literally the rest of my program today and the theory behind that. And I’m with you. I can’t disagree with you. In fact, I’ll tell you right now that we’ve got, in a lot of cases, declining school population, even among the front range here, Jimmy. Even with the growth that we’ve had population-wise, we’ve got a lot of school districts whereby – the growth of that district is declining. In other words, there’s less students today than there was four or five years ago, yet they want more money. They want a higher per pupil cost. And again, that money’s being driven into the areas that we don’t need, but not into the areas that we do need.
SPEAKER 09 :
Right, right. And then everything that makes sense that would actually work, you’re saying that’s off the table. So you’re saying there’s not enough police. I’m like, there’s enough men. And when I say men, I mean women as well. But if you get capable men that aren’t crazy people and they train to a standard, they protect the schools. You just might have to redesign them so they could have a place where they could do some work with their laptop. But we do it all the time. So when they say it can’t be done, it’s really annoying to those of us that are doing it.
SPEAKER 18 :
I had a great text message over the weekend where somebody asked, hey, John, why can’t we fix some of what’s going on security-wise in our schools by using a lot of retired veterans to do that job? In some cases, they would do it for little to no pay. And my answer back was, well, because we have such a bloated admin, they’ll never go down that path, Jimmy. It’s just not going to happen.
SPEAKER 09 :
Right, right. And that’s the thing. It’s like they want the answer. When you give them the answer, they don’t want it. It’s very easy to destroy. It’s hard to build. So to build something like that would take a little bit of standard and some training and all that. But once you get it, you’ve got it. And then you’ve got it, and then there’s a solution.
SPEAKER 18 :
Well, and I also feel, Jimmy, maybe I’m wrong in saying it this way, but it’s also one of those things where if it’s not their idea, they don’t want to do it. Am I wrong in saying that?
SPEAKER 09 :
No, that’s absolutely right. And if you want to get down to the core of it, what is the solution? The solution is me. Like, if the problem is me, the solution is me. Me be a better man, raise better kids, that see people made in the image of God. And if you believe that people are made in the image of God, you wouldn’t shoot holes in them.
SPEAKER 18 :
Okay, so among these, you know me, I’m a solutions-driven individual. I’m one of those where, okay, here’s the problem, let’s go attack it, let’s fix it. I know in some cases that’s extremely hard to do because in this case you’ve got to work through boards and teachers’ unions and so on. But for those people that are out there listening that are sending their kids off to public school, how do they handle it? What do they do to fix this?
SPEAKER 09 :
They stop asking permission. They start doing it, right? So like You don’t need permission to raise your kids. You don’t need permission to say certain things if you get scared, and we just saw that. If you don’t want to stick your neck out there, you just have to. And why? Because your kids are worth it. So you know how to raise your kids, raise your kids. So everybody’s so timid, and they feel like they need permission to go raise their kids the way that this country raised their kids, and you simply don’t.
SPEAKER 18 :
Talk about Able Shepherd. What is that organization? What do you guys do? What do you provide?
SPEAKER 09 :
Able Shepherd, we started off as a security, maybe cops, trained cops and security guards. It turned quickly into a community program to where we’ll take anybody in there that wants to protect themselves and their communities, start off with maybe I’ve never even touched a gun, and then walk them through that. What it grew into was spiritual, mental, and physical. So we’re making better people, and while you’re there, we’re teaching you how to protect your family.
SPEAKER 18 :
So if there’s somebody out there listening, let me say it this way. Somebody out there is listening. They’ve got maybe a charter school, private school, because I know this is a little bit harder on the public school sides of things. Let’s say that they’re one of those individuals or a church organization even. Will you help them?
SPEAKER 09 :
We help all of those people. I don’t want to say waste our time. We don’t pursue public schools because they’re such a hard no. But as far as charters and privates, absolutely. A lot of our solutions are free. If you want to put in the legwork, these are just fill in the blank where you’d be charged tens of thousands of dollars. Just get the template, fill it out, and you’ll be on the road to improvement.
SPEAKER 18 :
And again, I’ve known you for years now, and I know the types of things that you do. And for everybody listening, Jimmy, you’re not telling people to do outlandish things to protect kids. These are common sense-oriented approach to getting things fixed, right?
SPEAKER 09 :
That’s right. And there’s a responsibility. You can’t have a bunch of wackos grabbing their shotguns and showing up at the school. You just can’t do that, right? Correct. Therefore, men can’t take it away. But there is some responsibility to that, and it’s just flat-out time. So how many people, how many good men need to die before men find their feet? I’ve been saying that a lot lately.
SPEAKER 18 :
Well, unfortunately, more and more, and again, we could go down the path of why is this happening and what’s the condition of our country, spiritually speaking, and so on, and I think we know the answer, although I will say that after the events last week of Charlie Kirk, I think there’s going to be a couple of younger generations that this was a huge wake-up call, and I’m already seeing it, Jimmy, where a lot of these young people are saying, wait a minute, time out, this is not how this is supposed to work.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, such a global impact, Charlie Kirk. And then he broke through barriers of Hollywood, of sports. There’s so many people whose hearts are pouring out right now. And it woke up the world, right? So I sat there with my daughter. She had a TPUSA meeting. She started months ago. They had their first official meeting two nights ago. It was a beautiful thing, a beautiful thing.
SPEAKER 18 :
That is awesome. No, and I’m not one where even last week, you know, I guess I looked at things a little bit differently. And, yes, I’m very saddened by what happened. It shouldn’t have happened. It’s egregious what happened. But what I did say last week, and you’re already starting to see it, you know, God can take something that’s very evil and turn it into good, and he’s doing that.
SPEAKER 09 :
Absolutely. Absolutely. We’ve got investors calling. We’ve got people calling saying, you have the solution. I want to hear that again, because we put this out, and then people just kind of go back to work and forget. I pray to God this doesn’t, like, I won’t lose steam on this. I will not, right? I was just texting back and forth between you two, TPUSA, earlier today. I won’t lose steam on this. I hope others don’t, and I hope we get united and make an actual difference.
SPEAKER 18 :
How do they get a hold of you, Jimmy?
SPEAKER 09 :

This is John Rush.
SPEAKER 18 :
And this is Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Marty, you’re next. Go ahead.
SPEAKER 10 :
John, what happened to Charlie Kirk was disgusting, disgraceful, and unforgivable. That’s regardless of who did this crime, who did this offense. Here’s what needs to be talked about next. And I tell you right now, I’m still affected by this event. There’s tremendous anger in my heart for what’s going on. And I know human anger does not produce the righteousness that God seeks. But I’m telling you right now, there is an anger. Here’s where the Christian conservative has to move forward, has to do it different this time. Go back to the Trump assassinations, JFK, 9-11, the 2020, all of these just, yep, this is, we all figured it all out. This is who did it, how he did it, why he did it, and end of story. You can go back to bed, Christian conservative, Fox News boomer, no further questions needed. I want to make sure people are clear, John. that the first report that this, again, kind of retarded-looking guy, weirdo guy, just the angle where they show us that the shooter was perched. I saw the video more times than I wanted to. John, he had a water flow of blood coming out the side of his neck. He was shot from his right-hand side, John. And the FBI and that lying scumbag, Hindu scumbag, Kash Patel, who disrespects Charlie Kirk and says he’ll see him in Valhalla? That is a mythical, demonic place. Charlie Kirk is with our Lord Jesus Christ right now. So we better get past the trauma and say, okay, I’m sorry, this story isn’t going to fly. The classic, perfect, cookie-cutter, deranged, white man, trans, all these different… Do you believe that for two seconds, John?
SPEAKER 18 :
Well, as I said earlier, Charlie, as time goes by, I should say, I think we’ll learn more. And frankly, at this point in time, I have no idea. What I have seen as far as shot trajectory and so on, if in fact that was the shooter and where he was at on the rooftop and so on, yes, all of that makes sense. How all of it was pieced together and what all happened before and after in regards to him himself, I have no idea. At this point, I don’t know.
SPEAKER 10 :
Thank you. What we can do as Christian conservative Americans, kind of Trump. Before we get started, we automatically reject your first prescribed, this is why, how, when, where. We reject all that. We laugh in the face of government that tries to say, because they’re upset right now, because they’re scared right now, because they’ve been traumatized right now, we’re going to pound whatever lie down the throat of the American and get it to go away. It’s not going to fly, John. It’s not going to fly that the Thomas Crooks, cases show up wipe out a leader or try to and then so so ultimately marty i mean i’m not i’ll ask you point blank who do you think did this and why i will say it like this and i never would have said it had i not been had trump not revealed himself he’s a different man that came down the escalators in 2015 i’ll leave it like this because i don’t know yet but i’m of the opinion that this was known that this was high level, and this was probably associated with the friction around Israel relations, Bibi. And you’ve heard the reporting that Charlie said, I don’t want the Jewish money. Get it out of TPUSA. We don’t want that influence. Bibi’s a bully. He’s a monster. He’s a great white shark. What’s bigger? Could we sacrifice Charlie Kirk? Because, see, here’s the thing. I don’t believe it.
SPEAKER 18 :
I don’t believe any of that at all. Yeah, you’re going down a path there that I wouldn’t buy into, Marty.
SPEAKER 10 :
I’m sorry. The lone gunman, the Lee Harvey Oswald, the Thomas Crooks, that’s laughable, just like the moon landing.
SPEAKER 18 :
And why would that be, you know, just being devil’s advocate, Marty, why is that laughable? You don’t think one individual could do this?
SPEAKER 10 :
Because I do. I could have. I mean, no offense.
SPEAKER 18 :
I mean, the shot that he took, how far away he was, the type of weapon that he used. I mean, no offense. Anybody with minimal training could make that shot. It’s not that big of a deal. In fact, he almost by the way, he almost missed. I mean, I’m of the I’m of the belief that he was such a bad shot and was probably extremely nervous with what he was doing. And most people that are right handed will pull the shot to the right, which is exactly what happened. I honestly don’t see it being much different than that because he almost missed.
SPEAKER 10 :
Why did he take apart the gun? Why did he take apart the gun and reassemble it in the woods and leave it there? Why did he do that?
SPEAKER 18 :
You know, Marty, my answer to that would be deranged people do deranged weird things, especially after doing something that they know. In the case of this kid, knowing how he was raised, I guarantee you he knew that he had made a huge mistake. And deranged people that know they’ve made some major mistake will do all sorts of weird things. Just like people, Marty, really quick, Marty, just like when people have car accidents, for example, people that leave the scene of an accident, let’s use that as an example. Somebody that leaves the scene of an accident and knows they did wrong, typically they’ll do all sorts of weird things that later get found out. Why do they do that? Because they didn’t do what they should have done in the first place.
SPEAKER 10 :
Right, but that’s given this guy a ton of credit, but then dismissing, you know, the brilliance to do this all alone, undetected, get the shot off, accomplish it.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, you know, and no offense, Marty, I mean, given, and I’m sorry to say this, but I will say this, this is not to go against TPUSA or anything along those lines, but given the weak security around a lot of these events, and I mean that sincerely, I’ve been to a lot of these types of events, Marty, and I look around and think, you know, there’s really nobody here really watching, you know, X, Y, Z, and I’m trying to be as sincere and as nice in saying this as I can. I’m not trying to throw stones at anybody, but at the end of the day, no offense, security’s not at an all-time high.
SPEAKER 10 :
No, and we saw that in Butler, Pennsylvania. Correct.
SPEAKER 18 :
Where we had another… I mean, that one we had, you know, a presidential candidate and a next president that was actually there. In this case, it’s no offense, it’s TPUSA and Charlie Kirk. It’s not like it’s the president. I understand that, but I guess what we’re trying to get our heads around… Really quick, Marty, just to interject, and I’m not saying I would ever do anything along these lines, because I wouldn’t, but could you or I have pulled that off? Sure, it’s not that hard.
SPEAKER 10 :
I think there’s just a different level of coordination, planning, knowing. The Butler, Pennsylvania one is truly laughable now that you know kind of the guy walking around for all these hours. Same thing here, though, in the sense of, I mean, we’re supposed to trust our FBI, but yet… Ash Patel announced the arrest of that white loser. Was the arrest of that white loser to cause abilities to get what I’m what I’m getting at is that their first story is a lie. Demand more. Don’t stop because Charlie’s death is so worthless. If we continue this apathetic moving on yesterday’s news.
SPEAKER 18 :
But at the end of the day, Marty, I mean, to taking, you know, assassinating Charlie Kirk, you know, I guess depending upon what organization you think would have been involved in doing so, at the end of the day, the opposite result is going to happen. In other words, I don’t know who would have thought taking Charlie Kirk out accomplishes anything for their cause, because all you did was just awaken a firestorm. You’re not helping anything. If you’re really out to change something, yeah, you changed it, but for yourself, not for the better. You just awakened two generations to something that I’m not sure they would have awakened to otherwise.
SPEAKER 10 :
Maybe, maybe. There’s no maybe there, Marty.
SPEAKER 18 :
Look at what happened over the weekend with a lot of young people and the filling of churches and so on. The reality is you definitely awoke people that wouldn’t have been awoken otherwise. I mean, Marty, I’ve heard from young people that I don’t think ever would have texted or messaged me or emailed me prior to this event happening, people that have probably been listening to my program for a while. But these are young people now that are literally awakened and are saying and doing things that I don’t think they would have done otherwise.
SPEAKER 10 :
That’s fair, and there’s absolutely going to be a response, and you saw that this weekend, a response. When you asked what was the motivation, what was the gain, if you are silencing a movement, and here’s what I’m saying, Charlie’s latest messaging was, maybe as Americans we should step back and look at our relationship with Israel. That’s it. But if that gets in our college-age people’s minds, our boomers are in love with Israel, they will go to their graves saying Israel is our greatest ally. But if the 20-somethings, if our 18-year-olds say, I’m not going for that, see, it severs that tie between the United States and Israel, and it’s this huge movement.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, that’s never going to happen, though. No offense, that’s not ever going to happen.
SPEAKER 10 :
If the next generation says, no, no, we look at Israel like North Korea, not our best friend and baby.
SPEAKER 18 :
Not happening.
SPEAKER 10 :
It was getting ready to happen. That’s why he’s gone.
SPEAKER 18 :
Nah, not going to happen. That wouldn’t happen even with Charlie being around. Not going to happen, Marty. Sorry. You’re delusional in thinking that’s going to happen. Not going to happen.
SPEAKER 10 :
If college campuses are now all anti-Israel for the proper reason, meaning they’re a violent, destructive, hateful country, you don’t think that changes relations?
SPEAKER 18 :
But Marty, that’s where you and I will just have to agree to disagree because I don’t agree with you on that one. And I’ll say that straight. And anybody who’s listened to me for a length of time would know that that is not me. That is not the way I look at it.
SPEAKER 10 :
And that’s okay. What I’m telling you, though, is that they do not want that other perspective, anything other than Israel’s a baby, Israel’s innocent, Israel, Israel, Israel.
SPEAKER 18 :
And I would never go as far as to say that any country, including ours, is innocent. I would never say that, Marty, but I don’t think they’re the devil like you’re painting them out to be either.
SPEAKER 10 :
They are troubling in Qatar, killing people. What are they doing in Qatar? What are they doing in Yemen? What are they doing in all these countries other than fulfilling the greater Israel promise, which gives them… John, you’ve got to be open-minded to the wickedness coming out of our little friends in Tel Aviv. This is not the babies of Moses. This is not Abraham. These are not those Jews. These are a different form of… very violent demonic and you can see with netanyahu he’s a killer don’t cross him and so i’m just saying we’ve got to reassess their interests are not ours we have no fear of iran we have no fear of the middle east but for israel we must reassess that because they’ve gotten us involved in things that have really changed us, 9-11 is the perfect example, John.
SPEAKER 18 :

Putting reason into your afternoon drive, this is John Rush.
SPEAKER 18 :
All right, we are back, switching gears now. We’ll talk a little bit of sports and what happened to the Broncos, and I think, Richard, yesterday personally, and I know I’m a Bronco fan, but I think I would have said this across the board, we got robbed.
SPEAKER 04 :
You know, Dad, it felt like that, although… You kind of go back through it, and I feel like this is one of those games, unfortunately, where you almost have to chalk it up to the Broncos literally did everything they could to lose that game.
SPEAKER 18 :
No doubt.
SPEAKER 04 :
And they ultimately basically just gave Indianapolis too many chances. And obviously what you’re referring to is the last, you know, the field goal, 60 yards. craziness that is, you know, I don’t know why Indianapolis wouldn’t have tried for, to get closer or whatever it might be. But then you have Sean Payton taking timeouts, which gave Indianapolis extra time. And then you have Bo Nix throwing an interception, which took at least three points off the board. You have our kicker who is about 94% accurate dad from that range.
SPEAKER 18 :
I know.
SPEAKER 04 :
And he misses a kick. So that’s, those are six points right there. not to mention there was several other times during the game where I felt like the Broncos should have gone to… Because here’s the rule, right? If you’re up seven… you should go for two because if you kick the extra – so let’s say you score a touchdown, right, and that puts you up seven points without the extra point. But then once you have a – or once you get that extra point, it would put you up eight. Well, if you go for the two-point conversion, that puts you up nine, which is two scores no matter how way you slice it in the NFL, right? The only way you can ever get nine points in a single possession in the NFL or football in general, you can only get eight. and there was two times in that game in which the Broncos should have gone for two to put themselves up nine, and if they do that, I believe they lost the game by one, right, if I’m not mistaken, Dad?
SPEAKER 17 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
And so either one of those, that field goal is to tie, not win the game, and you just had some really poor decision-making from Sean Payton, from Bo Nix, and not to mention, Dad, our defense, which was incredible in game one, and Honestly, there’s talk that they’re supposed to be one of the best defenses possibly of all time. Well, you can’t get gashed like you did, no offense, Daniel Jones, who was the Colts quarterback, who was the first-round pick for the Giants a number of years ago, has moved around. maybe found a home in Indianapolis. We’ll see. Wins the job. You know, that guy torches you for almost 240 yards in one half. Jonathan Taylor, their running back, runs for, I think, 140. I mean, you just had everything sort of go wrong, Dad. And at the end of the day, you did come down to, you know, a field goal attempt. But I’m with you.
SPEAKER 18 :
And I have heard this from numerous folks that have even texted me, one just now, that, you know, on the same token, it’s a 60-yarder. Why are you even trying to block it? Just let the guy miss and be done with it.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, and that’s some of what came out today, Dad, is Sean Payton basically said that he called for the block and he probably shouldn’t have because that’s a typical block they use on a much shorter field goal. And I agree. I don’t know what, honestly, a 60-yarder, you sort of take your chance.
SPEAKER 18 :
Right. 50-50 that he’s going to, well, it’s probably even higher than that. It’s probably more like 70-30 he misses anyway, so just let him kick it.
SPEAKER 04 :
Dad, mind you, this guy, who I think is his first pro season, he’s out of Notre Dame, his career long to that point, not even an NFL game, career long in general, was 54 yards.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, so you just let him kick it. Don’t worry about it.
SPEAKER 04 :
You should have. Honestly, the only thing I could argue to get it done is save one of your timeouts, ice the guy, get him to think about it, and then go. Honestly, your guy should have just stood there. I mean, you still put pressure on him, right? You still rush him.
SPEAKER 18 :
Oh, yeah, you still rush him, but you don’t have to jump up and try to put your hands in the air and do all that. The reality is he’s probably going to miss it anyway, so just let him kick it.
SPEAKER 04 :
You are correct.
SPEAKER 18 :
I was so disgusted by some of that. And you’re right. We had other opportunities to win and made some really key mistakes. Even our kicker said, listen, a lot of this is on my shoulders. No. You know what? I appreciate him saying that, by the way. That’s a stand-up guy. Him saying, listen, I let down my fans. I let down my teammates and so on. No, pal. It’s not all your fault. If we’re relying on you to win the game, we didn’t play the game right in the first place.
SPEAKER 04 :
you are 1,000% correct, and that’s where the Broncos, I feel like they erred. And, again, it really should never – and I know everything leading up to this, Dad, you know, bled up to the kick and should he have made it. And the answer is yes, he should have made it. Bo Nix shouldn’t have thrown the interception. Sean Payton shouldn’t. But, you know, we’re all humans. We all make mistakes. And at the end of the day, I feel like the refs, you just – honestly, you can’t leave it to them. And what I will say is this, though, on that last play – By the letter of the law, was it a penalty? Yeah.
SPEAKER 18 :
But would they have normally called that? Probably not. That’s my whole point.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, and that’s the thing, right? Let’s be honest. The end of game should be officiated differently, right? Unless it’s one of the most egregious penalties that have ever happened. For example, a few years ago when Sean Payton was coaching the Saints and they were playing the Rams, remember there was the missed pass interference penalty. that the the call and I guess it went against the Saints right it should have happened and it didn’t and uh and and basically the Rams went to the Super Bowl I think they won the Super Bowl and it’s like that kind of thing is that’s really egregious right it’s pretty clear it was holding and you had that happen earlier in the game I’m not sure how much of that you watched but the the Colts were grabbing the Broncos there was one drive where I think the Colts had four penalties and the crowd was all upset You know, and would I have been upset if it was reversed? Absolutely. However, you can’t do the things they were doing when you’re pulling jerseys, when you’re casting guys, when you’re holding their arms.
SPEAKER 18 :
They’ll let you get by with a lot of stuff until you start seeing the jersey tear away.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, and that’s the thing.
SPEAKER 18 :
Or pull away, I should say. Not tear away, but pull away. When you start seeing the jersey come away from the body, they’re going to call you.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, and even offensive linemen, right? Offensive linemen are sort of noted for that, you know, Dad? And they will do that kind of stuff to where, you know, you play. They’re always doing that, right? That’s right. They’re always holding that guy, you know, because this is how it is. And there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s just…
SPEAKER 18 :
The whole key is, and you know this as well as anybody, the whole key is if you’re keeping your hands close to your body and you’re keeping all of that kind of quote-unquote internal, you’re typically going to get by with some holding. The minute you start holding and your arms and things are getting away from you and it becomes more apparent what you’re doing, you’re going to get called for it. That’s how it works.
SPEAKER 04 :
You are 1,000% correct. I play.
SPEAKER 18 :
I know that’s how it works. And the reason for that for a lot of you where you’re like, well, how do you know that, John? Because the refs have a lot of things to look at, and they’re looking at more than just one player. And a lot of times they can’t see those things that are happening close to the vest, if you would, quote, unquote, Richard. But when you start getting your arms away from you, it becomes more apparent what you’re doing.
SPEAKER 04 :
You are correct. If you ever watch games, the holdings that usually get called are not when the defender throws his arms up in the air and flops and does that thing. It’s when the offensive player extends his arms from his body, Dad, and you can see the jersey being pulled. You can see the guy’s movement being hindered. By the way, I’m not even blaming the Broncos. Honestly, after yesterday, I was so mad at the ref. I was like, that’s ridiculous. He can’t do it. Slept on it, looked at some more tape and film, and listened to some more people talk. And you go back, and literally it was the Broncos. The Broncos gave that game away, and it was a classic example of poor coaching. I’ll just say it. I know Sean Payton’s come in, and he’s done a lot of positive things. But, man, that was not their best performance yesterday.
SPEAKER 18 :
No, and I think, you know, ultimately the question is, can they learn from that? You know, it’s early in the season. Chiefs are 0-2. I mean, at the end of the day, is it really going to be that negative? Not if we come back from this, learn, and make adjustments as are needed. We’ll still be fine by the end of the year. It always hurts to have a loss because a loss is a loss, whether it’s by one point or two. 50 points. Doesn’t make any difference. You’ve still got an L next to your team name at the end of the day. But can they recover from this and move on? I think they can, yes.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, they absolutely can recover from it. The hard part is this, that last year you played the Colts at home. You beat them because they actually were leading, but then Jonathan Taylor drops the ball before the end zone, and then they throw a weird trick play, and you end up intercepting and taking it to the end zone, and you end up winning. Well, you had a lot of tiebreakers last year that got you into the playoffs. That was one of those tiebreakers that was getting you there. So now the reverse is going to hold true, and it’s all going to go back to a Week 2 game where if you are in a tie with the Colts, it could very well end up being this game determines that they get in over you. Now, like you said, long season, Chiefs are 0-2. You’ve got a divisional. You haven’t played any divisional games yet. It is a conference game, which is a bummer because conference matters more than if this was against an NFC opponent. But like you said, it is a long season, lots to go, and they should recover similar to the Chiefs game last year. We had the heartbreaking loss to the Chiefs. On a similar situation, granted, it was a blocked field goal versus this situation, but it seems maybe we’ll just get this one out of the way earlier this year, and then we’ll go the rest of the year and not have any issues.
SPEAKER 18 :
Well, let’s hope that would be best. Okay, last but not least, before I let you go and go to break and come back, do a couple car reviews. I, for one, and Donald Trump tweeted or put on his social media, he agrees with me. I hate the new kickoff in NFL. I think it is the dumbest thing. Donald Trump agrees. I get it. Injuries are down and all of that. It just looks so stupid. I’m sorry to say the ball’s moving like Trump says. The ball’s moving. No one else is. That’s not football.
SPEAKER 04 :
yeah it is it is definitely a weird thing and i’m i’m not a fan of it and i understand the the idea of what you think what mean your concussions and things of that nature and it but at some point in time that it is football big violence for a possible offer one of those violent things now Unfortunately, in today’s day and age, you can’t do that. And the numbers show that it doesn’t matter, right? Yeah, some people may not like it. You, President Trump, may not love it. But it’s likely here to stay, Dad, because the numbers are down as a result. And kickoffs are up because some of the other changes they made. Because now it used to be you got the ball in the 20. Well, then they moved up to the 25. Well, now, Dad, if you kick it into the end zone, you get the ball in the 35. If you kick the ball short of the quote-unquote landing zone… you actually get the ball in the 40. And so there’s a lot of incentive for teams to get returnable balls, make more exciting plays, because that’s what the NFL really is going for, is they want those kickoff returns with touchdowns.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, where before a lot of them were going around to the end zone.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, because, well, keep in mind, again, honestly, instead of, I think they could have done some other stuff like move the kickers back. That’s what I would have done. I would have just moved the kicker back more.
SPEAKER 18 :
That’s what I would have done.
SPEAKER 04 :
I mean, they’re already kicking from – I think now the kickers are kicking from the 30 or 35. I think it’s the 30. But, again, with the legs that these guys have, they can easily kick it out of the backfield. Well, and that’s kind of my thought is, you know, keep moving it back to where they do make – and here’s the deal. Move it back – and then move the guys up to, I don’t know, I’m with you. I think it’s kind of silly, but unfortunately it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
SPEAKER 18 :

SPEAKER 08 :
We don’t yell at you. We inform you. Now, back to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 18 :
All right, it’s that time of the week where we put in our car reviews. Richard, what have you driven lately?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, Dad, so I actually drove, I think, my favorite car of the year so far. And that’s saying something because we’ve had some really fun cars. And this is actually an SUV. It’s a 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9. This is the, let me make sure I get this right, the all-wheel drive performance calligraphy edition. Folks, this is Hyundai’s. plug-in totally electric suv it’s very similar to a kia ev9 which similar manufacturers cousin whatever you want to say sunday is separate so we’re going to review this that it’s got all of the bells and whistles that you could imagine on this vehicle five years 60 000 mile new vehicle warranty 10 year 100 000 mile powertrain warranty 10 year 100 000 mile electric vehicle warranty seven-year unlimited-mile anti-perforation, and a five-year unlimited-mile roadside assistance. And some of you are saying, Richard, why are you giving me the warranties? Well, folks, because this is one of the best-selling features of a Hyundai, and it’s not only on this vehicle, Dad. It’s on their other vehicles, too. But it is a fantastic value that you get when you buy this car. Total price on this vehicle, Dad, $77,040. Now, that’s not including some tax credits and stuff that you can get, which obviously does run out at the end of this month. And if you’re listening to this review after the fact, just keep that in mind. However, Dad, I love this vehicle. And the main reason is because it overperforms. It under-promised and over-delivered for me. In terms of range, I believe they say this thing can go up to 335 miles on EV. I was actually closer to like 360 miles, to be honest with you, Dad. Mind you, this is the all-wheel drive variant. It’s a three-row electric SUV, and I was able to fit six full-size adults in this vehicle along with, Cargo behind the third row, which is great. It also comes, Dad, with a… If you’ve got the level 2 or the 240-volt outlet in your home, you don’t have to go buy a new charger. It comes equipped with one. It’s got several different adapters, all different types. It kind of comes nicely, conveniently tucked in the frunk, and it’s a modified frunk. It’s not a full-size, as some of these other vehicles are. But I just love this vehicle. It ran well. You can adjust the one-pedal driving to be basically full one-pedal or a lot less, depending on how you want to drive. If you want it to drive more like a traditional car to where it doesn’t break at all, you can set it that way. It’s got massaging front seats, or at least front driver’s seat. It’s got heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel. I think the second row had heated and ventilated seats. It’s got… all the great sound system that you’ve come with with Hyundai. And folks, if you have not been in a Hyundai in a while, especially this model, this calligraphy performance level or trim level, it’s just phenomenal. I don’t know how to say it. It’s one of my more favorite cars. And I will say this, it is a very unique looking car where you may have seen this car driving down the road and you’re not sure what it is. And I would encourage you to get out and see that. Again, depending on What you qualify for, Dad, as far as different tax credits, whatever it might be, the price that I mentioned earlier may not be that way for you. And I will say this. I drove this thing everywhere, and pretty much every night I was able to plug it into the level 2 charger that I’ve got at home, or that they provided, I should say, and basically charge this vehicle back up to full range. And I will say, there’s something about the EV market in that way. it’s nice to get in, Dad, and basically have a full tank of fuel.
SPEAKER 18 :
Every day.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right? And yeah, and fuel, obviously, in this case, is electricity, but you’ve got a full battery or 80%, depending on, we can get into that later, but every day, right? You don’t have to worry about stopping. But the nice thing at the same time is I didn’t feel like, I didn’t feel a ton of range anxiety because, again, you’re getting over 300 miles on a full battery. Now, That is here in the summer in Colorado, Dad, which is about as close to ideal conditions as you can get. I’m sure as it gets colder out, that’s going to go down a little bit. But it’s just something to know. Outside of that, Dad, I have no negatives on this car. It drove well. It was fun to drive. The kids, when you put them in it, we call it rocket booster mode. And honestly, you change it to sport mode. But the ultimate thing is these electric cars drive fantastic.
SPEAKER 17 :
They do.
SPEAKER 04 :
Encourage folks, head to your local Hyundai dealer, check it out. Again, Hyundai IONIQ 9. This was the Calligraphy Performance Edition. And when you do that, let them know that John and Richard Rush from Drive Radio and Rush to Reason sent you.
SPEAKER 18 :
All right. You drove another car this last week as well. Actually, this was probably a couple of weeks ago. We got a little bit behind with me being out of town. So give us an update on the other car.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, Dad, and you’ve driven this car in the past. It’s the 2025 Volkswagen Golf R, which is the hot hatch vehicle, right, Dad? And the new things on here, manual transmission, unfortunately, is no longer available. It’s giving you 13 more horsepower. Some new infotainment system, which works really, really well, and this is part of the 8th generation Golf for 2022. The vehicle as we drove it, Dad, was about $53,731. And mind you, this is the Golf R, right, Dad? Some other people are going to say, well, that sounds pretty high for a Golf. Well, this is kind of the top of the line. Correct. This is the black edition, which has got some different styling and that sort of thing on it. I will say that the hot hatch piece of it, and you’ve driven this car in the past, it really stays true to form with this vehicle, doesn’t it?
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, it does. And by the way, one of the more fun cars to drive, and I mean that, it really does put excitement back into that segment of the market. And you’ll probably talk about this. Not a huge car. It’s not one of those cars you’re going to put a family of four or five in. It’s not designed for that. This is more of the smaller, what I would call more economical type car. But they’ve made this car, how should I say it, Richard, just a lot more fun to drive in that section of cars.
SPEAKER 04 :
It is a blast. It’s got all these different modes that you can choose from. You can, in theory, take this car out and drift it, which we obviously didn’t do. It’s got a 2-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, all-wheel drive with torque vectoring on it, the 7-speed automatic transmission. So, again, in our up here, Dad, it does have all-wheel drive, which is fantastic, especially, again, with some of the stuff that does come in, that white stuff. Outside of that, it was a little rocket ship. You can put this car in manual mode. You can paddle shift. You can really have some fun with this vehicle. It gets up and goes. You mentioned size-wise. I was able to fit two kids and booster seats in the back, and the hatch does open up. You can fit some stuff in there, a ball bag or whatever it might be. It is not the biggest car out there, especially if you’ve got a taller vehicle. back seat, passenger side passenger, you’re going to have to scoot the passenger seat forward. Would it prevent me from buying the car, Dad? No, because I’m not buying the car for the back seat. I am buying this car because it’s just an absolute blast to drive. And it’s really hard, Dad, to find a car for, and real quick, I’ll give you the price on this before we get out of here, $53,731. Depending on what you get, you can get this car for right around $50,000. It’s really hard to find a car for $50,000, Dad, that runs this well and is this fun to drive. straight out of the box and so i would encourage folks if you’re in the market and you know who you are if you’re in the market for this hot hatch again 2025 volkswagen golf r black line and this car was fantastic really enjoyed it head to your local volkswagen dealer test drive them if they’ve got them and when you do that let them know that john and richard rush from drive radio and rush to reason sent you all right one last question really quick on the ionic nine did your wife like it She actually did. The only reason that we would not have considered that car for full-time is just size. But, and I’ll just give it out, when you have four kids, you need that back behind the third row space, Dad. Right, for all the other stuff. However, outside of that, everything else about it, she really loved it. You know how particular she is in a good way. But it still worked, and it got the kids in and out, and yes. So she did like it, just for a family of six, not quite enough room.
SPEAKER 18 :

Now back to Rush to Reason on KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 18 :
All right, I know this doesn’t fit into today’s program, but I was just telling Charlie during the break that I spent a bunch of time on a ladder yesterday doing a bunch of things out in my barn and so on, and I will just say, A, I’m not as young as I used to be, and B, working on a ladder, you guys that do that all day long, respect. That’s all I’m going to say, respect. because every muscle in my body aches every single time the next day, every single time I’m on a ladder for a good part of the day. It’s just, for me personally, strenuous. So you guys that work on ladders all day long, hats off. You do something that, frankly, I don’t want to do on a daily basis. All right, Hour 3 is next. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 12 :
I’m a rich guy.
