In this episode of Drive Radio, the discussion kicks off with fascinating insights into performance cars. Discover the thrill behind high-speed specs and why image matters in the world of fancy automobiles. As the conversation progresses, insurance becomes the central focus. Listen closely as a caller shares personal experiences with umbrella policies and their role in protecting assets—especially when state minimums are not sufficient.
SPEAKER 05 :
It’s a mighty fancy automobile. Oh, she’s a real road king, all right.
SPEAKER 20 :
Zero to 60 in 7.5. She’ll do a quarter of a mile, 13.40. 390 horsepower, 500 foot-pounds of torque. Whatever that is.
SPEAKER 05 :
Performance and image, that’s what it’s all about.
SPEAKER 18 :
There’s no such thing as a stupid question. This is Drive Radio. All of your automotive questions are just one phone call away. 303-477-5600. Drive Radio is made possible by the member shops of Colorado Select Auto Care Centers. To find one near you, go to drive-radio.com. Now, Drive Radio on KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 04 :
And we are back to our radio, KLZ 560. If you’re just joining us now, another hour left. Myself, Steve Horvath from Geno’s Auto Service with us today. Larry Unger answering phones. Charlie Grimes, our engineer. Bob and Thornton, you are next. Go ahead, Bob.
SPEAKER 15 :
Hey, I got one of your callers here was talking about umbrella policies. And I have some experience with that. For instance… I don’t have homeowners insurance because I’m self-insured on that. I have enough to take care of my own repairs. But since I don’t have homeowners insurance, the umbrella policy, and I have one, doesn’t kick in until $300,000 over and above that. And that’s why it’s so cheap.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right.
SPEAKER 15 :
It’s almost never used.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, like I told you, the reason why it’s an umbrella is because it’s an umbrella. You hardly ever need it.
SPEAKER 15 :
But you’ve got to, you know, it only picks up after, you know, that threshold.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right.
SPEAKER 15 :
If somebody slips and falls on my sidewalk and sues me for a million dollars, first 300K is on me, and then the umbrella policy will kick in that time. On my cars, you know, I probably told you this before. I’ve never had collision or comprehensive on any car I’ve ever owned. Right. And the same thing there. But I will carry $300,000 in liability, and then I have my umbrella over top of that. Got it. Did you know, oh, this will kill you, the minimum liability in Colorado is only $25,000. And in California, it’s $10,000.
SPEAKER 04 :
Actually, isn’t it $5,000 and $15,000 here in Colorado?
SPEAKER 15 :
Is it what now?
SPEAKER 04 :
I think it’s $5,000 and $15,000 in Colorado. Isn’t that our state minimums?
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, I thought it was. Okay, I could be wrong on that. California is $10,000. Can you imagine?
SPEAKER 04 :
No, it’s not enough. It’s not even close.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, we need temporary transportation to the, well, insurance companies do what they, they look at the case and they’re required to provide you with some defense. But they look at it, if you’ve got a low liability like that, it’s called throwing in the policy. They go, we’re done.
SPEAKER 04 :
Our liability… Yeah, here in Colorado, sorry, it’s 15-20. 25 for bodily injury, so that’s your 25 you were talking about. Bodily injury, 15 on damage, so it’s 15-25. And you’re right, California is less than ours.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, it’s not enough. Bottom line, you better have uninsured motorists. So the insurance company has frozen the towel on you, basically? Well, what happens is, so say you are driving and you’ve got state minimums. So you’ve got the 25 bodily, 15 property damage, and you run into Bob. Mm-hmm. And Bob, depending upon what your insurance is and whether you’ve got an uninsured motorist or not doesn’t matter. But let’s say Bob’s driving his new car, and it’s a $50,000 car that you drive into him in total. Your policy is only going to cover $25,000 of his $50,000 loss. And, yeah, you’re on the hook. And now Bob’s on the hook for their $25,000.
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, the property damage I’m not so concerned with.
SPEAKER 04 :
But I want to make sure everybody’s following me, Bob, because in that scenario, whether you’re covered or not, all Steve’s policy is picking up is 25 of your $50,000 claim.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, and then my uninsured others.
SPEAKER 04 :
And either you’re uninsured or you yourself are picking up the other 25.
SPEAKER 06 :
Now, do you go back and stew, would your insurance company go back and stew the person who’s uninsured?
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, and this is where, and Bob, you would know this as well as I, that depends on the asset base of that person. And typically, if that person has state minimums, there’s no assets to go after, so good luck. Blood out of a turnip. That’s right. Good luck.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, property damage is not my biggest concern.
SPEAKER 04 :
And actually, I was wrong in what I just said a moment ago, Bob. I was off. The $25,000 is bodily injury. If you went to the hospital and had to get covered, that’s the $25,000. As far as your $50,000 loss on the car, it’s only $15,000 Steve is covering. Yeah, that doesn’t even fix a scratch anymore. So Bob’s not picking up the rest on the $35,000.
SPEAKER 15 :
Those umbrella policies generally start at $35,000. Anything over and above 300K.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, the umbrella is not doing anything in this particular world. And again, the state minimums, you know, to your point, Bob, not only in Colorado, but California are way under what they should be. Meaning, meaning unless you’ve got a lot of money and you want to self-insure, get uninsured motorists.
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, I always carry that, but I don’t carry collision and comp on my car.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, because that’s on you. You’re the one driving. You know what you’re doing and you’re willing to take that risk.
SPEAKER 15 :
I haven’t had a homeowner’s policy since 1988 because all my properties since then have been free and clear. Okay, my second issue is, oh, did you get my picture about the Eldorado, 59 Eldorado?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, yeah, nice car.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, I always admired those, but I never rode one, drove one.
SPEAKER 04 :
Me neither. You and me both, Bob. I never have either.
SPEAKER 15 :
The other issue is, and does Dan Muir still monitor your show?
SPEAKER 04 :
He listens periodically, yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay, well, the 7th, which is next Wednesday, if the state legislature, it’s going to the Senate now, but you know how that goes. The House has passed this 25-1219. Yeah. And by 59-6, well, you know why that is.
SPEAKER 03 :
Uh-huh.
SPEAKER 15 :
You can’t find a conservative in our legislature with a bloodhound. Now it’s going to the Senate, and it’s veto-proof, so Polis can’t even veto this. After the 7th, Uber said, they’re pulling out of the state. Now, they did pull out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, but there was such an uproar, they figured that out. They pulled out of Austin, Texas, but not the whole state. And they pulled out of London and Paris in Europe, and there was such an uproar, because people depend on Uber for… Oh, getting to work, getting to hospital, doctor appointment, airport, you know, you name it. So if Dan Muir is listening, I hope he calls in. Because next Wednesday, Uber said to hell with it.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, and when is all that, Bob, going to take – and for all of you listening, that’s something that really you should be calling your state legislatures, whether either side of the aisle, talking to them. If they’re your representative, you need to be sending them a message or talking or leaving a message or doing something because, Bob, that – Uber’s right, and I don’t blame them. And for everybody listening, this is a bill that, quote-unquote, is a protection for rioters, but it’s very intrusive. It’s doing things that, frankly, would be too costly, by the way, for a lot of the folks that drive and so on. It’s not worth doing. It’s not going to do anything at the end of the day other than shove Uber out.
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, on the state side and the federal side, you know, in Colorado, there’s no reason to contact anybody here publicly. on the state or federal side, because they’re all Dems, and they’re not going to listen to you anyway.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, on the federal side, we still control the House and the Senate, so that’s different. You’re correct, though, here in Colorado, yeah. I would still, I mean, at the end of the day, Bob, they’re your representative. You still need to call and tell them what you think, no matter what side of the aisle they’re on. I know it’s not going to do any good, but it still needs to be done. They need to hear from us.
SPEAKER 1 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
They’re making a huge mistake. It’s going to, to your point, it’s going to send Uber out of the state, and there’s a lot of folks, disabled, elderly, and so on, that use that service on a routine basis that they will now no longer have that option. And you and I both know what will happen to taxi prices if that happens.
SPEAKER 15 :
You know that I’m an Uber driver.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, I knew that, yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah. But I’m hoping that Dan is monitoring that. Because he went through that in Minneapolis.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, I’d like to hear from him on that, and I’m with you, Bob. I will be shocked if this doesn’t pass, and then what happens because Uber’s gone.
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, yeah, it won’t last long because there’ll be such an uproar.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, what are they going to do?
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, people that depend on it in Minneapolis and Austin, Texas, they didn’t do it for the whole state. It was those two cities. And Paris and London.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, but this is a statewide thing they’re talking about.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, this is statewide.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. So my point is, I mean, if that passes, it’s now veto-proof. You’re saying it’s veto-proof. I haven’t checked all that, but I believe what you’re saying is true. So at the end of the day, that happens. Uber pulls out. What’s next?
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, gypsy cabs. Thank you.
SPEAKER 04 :
My point is they’re going to do nothing but make this worse, not better.
SPEAKER 15 :
There’s not enough taxis out there.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, there is not. You’re correct.
SPEAKER 15 :
I mean, I drive people all the time that are older folks that are going to, they don’t drive. And they’re going to doctor’s appointments. That’s right. They’re going to the airport. They’re going shopping. I drive them all the time, John.
SPEAKER 04 :
I hear you. Bob, it’s a huge misstep on the part of our state, but these knuckleheads down at the Statehouse don’t know what they’re doing. Well, actually, they do know what they’re doing. Here’s my opinion on this, Bob. I could be wrong. This is a big ploy by Taxi Lobby to get rid of Uber.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, I don’t know about that.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, I do. Absolutely. Those guys get in the ear of these politicians saying, hey, you guys could pass this based upon this, that, and the other. I know the leader of this particular bill is somebody that had a problem with Uber and blah, blah, blah. And while I get the fact that she had an issue, the reality is her one problem should not affect everybody else in the state, Bob.
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, her issue was not with Uber. It was with Lyft. And with Lyft, it was somebody using someone else’s app to drive. Nevertheless, on Wednesday, the legislation shuts for the session.
SPEAKER 04 :
That’s right.
SPEAKER 15 :
And if it’s not settled by then, I don’t know what’s going to happen.
SPEAKER 04 :
Me neither. We’ll keep watching it, Bob. I’ll talk about that more Monday, by the way. All right, bye. Thank you. Appreciate you, Bob, very much. Howard, hang tight. We’ll come right back to you. One line open, 303-477-5600. Drive Radio, KLZ 560.

SPEAKER 04 :
All right, we are back. Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Howard, go ahead, sir. You’re next.
SPEAKER 08 :
Good sunny afternoon. Absolutely. Nice spring day. Unlike the last fellow who addressed your topic of the day just before the top of the hour, I won’t say the most fun I’ve had in a car, but rather the most fun I’ve had driving a car was a Lotus Elise. Oh, yeah. Just about everything Lotus, as long as it has good tires and everything else is up to spec, that’s probably about the best handling car you’re going to find.
SPEAKER 04 :
For the price, yeah, I would agree with you on that, Howard. Yeah, for the price, absolutely.
SPEAKER 08 :
It sticks like crazy. Chapman did one heck of a job with all of his cars.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, that’s basically why when Tesla did their first Roadster, it was that, only electrified.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yep. Yep. Well, heck of a lot heavier, too, about. Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Point taken. It was not only a good-looking car, but worked very well for that aspect of things as well. And, by the way, if you have one of those, that’s one of those cars, Howard, whether you liked EVs or not, I should have bought one of those back in the day and kept it because they are bringing a fortune today.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, they were fantastic. You know, the Europas, the Alans. You know, the newer ones, the Elise, Evora, and so on, they’re just fantastic cars. Well, he did a heck of a job in F1 also, sort of set the bar at the time. But just to give you an idea of how well those things handle, I did a trip over to Steamboat and back, and up near the Continental Divide, there’s a turn that’s It’s a real tight keyhole. It’s marked for something like, I believe, 20 miles an hour. I had good tires on the vehicle, high-performance street tires, but I went through that sucker at 90 miles an hour. And, you know, completely comfortable. Well, you don’t want to let up on the throttle at that speed doing that.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right, right.
SPEAKER 08 :
But, you know, they just stick like crazy.
SPEAKER 04 :
That’s good.
SPEAKER 08 :
So they’re a fantastic vehicle.
SPEAKER 04 :
Awesome. Awesome.
SPEAKER 08 :
The bodies are crap on them, and they’re British cars, so they’re no damn good. But, you know, they do stick.
SPEAKER 04 :
Very good. Awesome. Good story, Howard. Thank you for that, by the way. Yep, you are welcome. Have a good one. Have a great night. Appreciate you very much. Felipe, what’s going on? Hi.
SPEAKER 10 :
Hi, John.
SPEAKER 04 :
How are you doing? I’m great. How are you?
SPEAKER 10 :
Well, I wanted to let you know that today begins the Golden Cruise.
SPEAKER 04 :
You are correct. First Saturday of the month starting in May running through September, correct?
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, you know, John, you know. You know everything.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, because I kind of live over that way, and I will do my best to go out there tonight. I’ve got a lot of housework to get done when I get home today, but I’m going to do my best to see if we can’t shuffle on over there at some point, Felipe.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, you know, it should be a good turnout because the weather is superb.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, it’s perfect. Perfect.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yes, perfect for the cruise. When is your next remote, and where will it be?
SPEAKER 04 :
Right now, we are scheduled for the Red Lion one that we do over at Loprino Foods, which I believe, I’m looking right now, I believe is the 20… I’m looking at the calendar here. Sorry, the 21st. We’re going to be the 20. Sorry, I’m looking. My bad. It’s July. I thought it was June, but we’re into July. It will be the 26th of July is our first one scheduled, but we’re early. I haven’t had any other requests yet, but that one is confirmed. We will be there the 26th of July at the Red Lion Run.
SPEAKER 10 :
I’ll look forward to it, because that’s always a good one.
SPEAKER 04 :
That’s a great show, absolutely. That’s the best one. Always a good one. One of the best ones, yeah. Also, I missed you while you were on vacation. Well, thank you. I appreciate you missing me. I always enjoy leaving, but I enjoy coming back.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, yeah, because, you know, there’s no replacing John Ruff.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, thank you, Flippy. I appreciate that.
SPEAKER 10 :
Okay, have a good night.
SPEAKER 04 :
You too, man. I appreciate you very much. No, thank you, Felipe, and I’ll do my best to get over there tonight. Jeff and Steamboat, what’s going on?
SPEAKER 11 :
Hey, you guys. Hi, Steve.
SPEAKER 04 :
Hi, how are you?
SPEAKER 11 :
John, I’m well, thanks. I just wanted to thank you, John, for your recommendation to get my pickup fixed after I got clobbered on I-25. Awesome. I was getting off I-25, and I was already on the C-470 exit, and it’s one lane, and this guy came across two lanes of traffic. I saw him out of the corner of my eye and ran right into the back end, well, the back side, the driver’s side of my truck, tore off half the bumper. Great. I saw the picture. Yeah, gee, man. But your place is great, and I need to talk to him again on Monday, but Progressive, the other insurance company called, and they said they had seen it and they were going through it with the shop. And I told the shop, what’s the guy’s name?
SPEAKER 04 :
Joaquin.
SPEAKER 11 :
Joaquin, yeah, yeah. I said, hey, you know, don’t make anything cheap just because they say it’s not worth it.
SPEAKER 04 :
And I don’t remember, what year is your truck again, Jeff? 2010. 2010. That’s another one where, you know, make sure that you’re getting all of your diminished value and things back out of that as well, like we talked earlier with, you know, Burke from BP Appraisals.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, that was timely to have him on. You know, I may have to be giving him a call. You may have to. I don’t think so. I don’t know if I do. I’m with USAA, and they are a pretty strong arm in many things, so. And, yeah, I haven’t had to make a claim on anything in so long. It’s not good. And then also, and I wrote that to you, that I’d been out scouting in your neighborhood again for a house for this spot. And to see that big development next to you, I just went, oh, my God. I couldn’t believe it.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. What do you do? Progress keeps going, Jeff, and you cannot stop progress.
SPEAKER 11 :
Well, I don’t know if we call it progress, but I guess it’s growth.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, well, growth maybe is a better way to say it. Despite what even previous politicians have tried to do here in Colorado, you’re not going to stop it. It is what it is.
SPEAKER 11 :
Oh, I know. Oh, I know. When they had the moratorium in Boulder, all the other towns around Boulder did all the building and took all the businesses. They’re so short-sighted. Yeah. I, you know, the politicians in this state have just ruined it. I feel, well, they have.
SPEAKER 04 :
And I was asked the other day, you know, via text message, you know, for me as a native and all of that, you know, how long do I stay? And the answer Jeff is, I mean, it’s where everything I have ever done is, you know, business family and so on. I mean, I honestly, what, you know, I mean, I guess at some point you could figure out a way to pack up and go, but that’s easier said than done.
SPEAKER 11 :
Well, and it is, and I don’t know where you go, but, uh, You know, it’s like us with our, you know, what we’re sitting on. We bought the property in 1990 and built in 2000, and it’s just ridiculous.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER 11 :
Where the hell do you go?
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, Steve’s over here looking at me. We’re all agreeing. He’s nodding his head with us, and, you know, yeah, that’s the question, Jeff. I mean, yeah, there are other places you can go. I mean, you can go other places, even live a little cheaper and so on, but, you know, for every pro, there’s a con.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right. Oh, I know. We’d go to Wyoming. My wife couldn’t take the wind.
SPEAKER 04 :
I can’t do the wind. Sorry, Wyoming listeners, I can’t do the wind.
SPEAKER 11 :
I love Wyoming. I’m sorry, but it’s just the wind.
SPEAKER 04 :
I mean, Jeff, I struggle with it here at times, so I definitely would not do well up there.
SPEAKER 11 :
Well, we always say, because we’re in the film business, we’re outside a lot. We work in the coldest temperatures there have been. and then some of the hottest temperatures. You can deal with it, but the wind will take your soul. That’s the way we always do it.
SPEAKER 04 :
You know what? I’m going to steal that from you because I’m with you. I can pretty much do any other extreme cold, extreme hot, all those different things. There’s just something, and maybe it’s because of our wind here. I mean, there’s one thing to be on the islands, which I just was, and have that breeze blowing off the ocean and so on. That’s a different wind, Jeff.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that’s a different wind. You love that there.
SPEAKER 04 :
You know, to your point, the wind we have here steals your soul. I’m borrowing that.
SPEAKER 11 :
Well, I better give my wife Susan credit for that.
SPEAKER 04 :
She’s right. She is on the money because that’s exactly what it does.
SPEAKER 11 :
Steve’s a matter he knows. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 06 :
Oh, yeah. I think of the old movie, Paint Your Wagon, remember? It’s called Mariah.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah. Called The Wind Mariah.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
A song like that. Anyway, hey, thanks a lot.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, you’re welcome. And let me know if anything else, Jeff. Appreciate you as always.
SPEAKER 11 :
I missed you, too, but I didn’t know you were on vacation, so good for you.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, thank you. Appreciate you very much. All right, Jeff, take care, man. Love you. Appreciate you very much. Thanks for all you do for us. And, again, all of you, great listeners, and I appreciate you guys’ comments. And on the same token, Steve knows this as well, got to take some time off periodically and go do some things, and I do my best to – Make sure we’ve got fill-in even when I’m not here, and we planned on having some fill-in last weekend. It just didn’t quite pan out. But, hey, you know what? It is what it is. We’re here today. We’re rolling along. We’ve got lines open, 303-477-5600. Drive Radio, myself and Steve, we’ll be right back. This is Drive Radio, KLZ 560.

SPEAKER 04 :
All right, we are Back Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Myself, Steve Horvath from Geno’s Auto Service. Buck in Cheyenne. Go ahead, sir.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, good morning.
SPEAKER 04 :
Good morning.
SPEAKER 12 :
I’m a little tired of you Colorado people. Oh, your wind is a killer, though. And our wind, I’m totally really mad about it. I will tell you one thing. That wind eats a lot of the Colorado liberals down in Colorado.
SPEAKER 04 :
Good one, Buck. Good one. And that’s a good thing. Good one. Good one, good one. I can’t argue with that either.
SPEAKER 12 :
We occasionally get a few up here. I grew up with the wind, so it’s not a big deal.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, you’re used to it, I guess you could say.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
And really quick, too, my other issue, and I should have said this earlier, my other thing, and I guess maybe because as I’m getting older, Buck, if I do anything, I’m moving where it’s warm, not cold.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, I don’t think I want to move because I don’t mind the cold too bad. And I’m older that I don’t have to go out in it anymore.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, there’s something to be said about that. Me, I’m still out in it all the time, so.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, well, you’ve got a business that does that.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, we do. You’re right. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 12 :
But I don’t get a big snow here. I’ve got a fairly fair-sized tractor that I brought in from the ranch and a big snowblower with it. And all of my neighbors really love me.
SPEAKER 04 :
There you go. Good for you.
SPEAKER 12 :
I don’t charge them.
SPEAKER 04 :
Good for you.
SPEAKER 12 :
Kind of what I called about, I have a… OTC Genesis scan tool. Oh, okay. Occasionally you get people. This thing will go back clear to the beginning OBD-II. And occasionally you get people that are looking that go back into the 90s. I’ve got a 95 F-250 that I use it on. But I would be willing to, for example, I was impressed enough with Pat and Fort Collins and his crew. I’d be willing to loan it to them if they get into a place they need that older scan tool.
SPEAKER 04 :
Good to know. Pat will be here next week. I will pass that along.
SPEAKER 12 :
But that’s really what I called about. I happen to be digging it out. Oh, my gosh, John talks about it.
SPEAKER 04 :
I haven’t seen one of those in years, Buck. I had one back in the day.
SPEAKER 12 :
And I know it works because I just had it on my 95.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, good for you. Good for you.
SPEAKER 12 :
Maybe I should buy newer vehicles.
SPEAKER 04 :
Nah, just keep driving what you got, Buck. You’re fine.
SPEAKER 12 :
Okay, well, I’ll let you go.
SPEAKER 04 :
Good to hear from you, Buck, as always. I appreciate you very much, and I’ll pass that along next week. David in Denver, go ahead.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yes, I recently noticed a chip in my windshield. I remember you had a sponsor. I haven’t heard them lately.
SPEAKER 03 :
Novus.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, and then they said don’t go on the… Those guys on the side of the road with the tent, they’re probably better. But someone just told me, it’s not a huge deal to me, but he said put some super glue in there.
SPEAKER 04 :
Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope. If you put super glue in it, they’ll never be able to fix it correctly afterwards. You’re actually ruining the ability to fix the windshield correctly. Best thing to do is put scotch tape over it until you fix it. okay and then fixing it would be take it to novus yep yep they’ll a lot of them will do mobile repair or you can find one of them locally that can do it uh we’ve got our sponsors they’re a little bit from you but uh if you’re up in the fort collins area and we’ve got sterling as well but yeah best thing to do on a windshield chip is cover it with scotch tape for right now and then get it fixed as quickly as you can and don’t Don’t wash it. Don’t put any soap in it. Super glue definitely is a huge, huge. I don’t know who told you that. Whoever said that has no idea how windshields are supposed to be fixed because that is the worst thing you could ever do.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, that’s why I’m calling because his advice is questionable.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, that is. It’s sort of like we had Alan Stack on a couple of weeks ago here talking about fixing your eyeglasses and so on. And, you know, super glue being an enemy of fixing eyeglasses. It’s the same when it comes to windshield repair.
SPEAKER 14 :
Okay, and then is that likely – I guess that’s where it begins, and then eventually you will have a crack.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, if you don’t fix the chip, this is kind of for everybody listening. If you get a pit and you don’t fix it, we’ll install windshields now, unless it’s one of the old rubber strip type windshields that were back in the 70s. All of the late model windshields for most of the cars on the road today, probably 95% of the cars on the road today, it’s a structural component issue. of the car now meaning there is stress on that windshield because it’s basically made to function as a structural piece of the car that’s why they’re glued in with urethane and they aren’t just held in with a weather strip like they used to be back in the day so it’s an integral part of the car now meaning there is stress on the windshield so as the body moves around you go over bumps and things like that you’re getting stress on the windshield itself so if we get temperature changes along with the stress that’s why they crack david okay
SPEAKER 14 :
All right, well, scotch tape is going on there.
SPEAKER 04 :
Scotch tape it to keep it clean and then get it fixed as soon as possible.
SPEAKER 14 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
Thank you. No, great question, David. Thank you for that, by the way, because we haven’t talked about that for a while. I’ll get Kent on here in the not-too-distant future or Chris, one of the two, and talk about that. But, yeah, those of you, if you get a chip, keep it clean. Put some tape over it as quickly as you can. Don’t go through a car wash. Don’t wash the car yourself. Keeping that soap and everything out of it is what we want to do. And the reason for that is because the resins that are used – And I can talk fairly intelligently about this because we’ve had them on enough. I’ve learned through the years how this works. But the resins that they use and the way they go about fixing that crack, they’re literally injecting the resins down into the crack, forcing it out. And then that resin is there that then hardens, becomes stronger than the glass itself. And that’s what’s holding everything together to keep it from cracking out. And… If done soon enough and correctly, and you can get it before things start to spiderweb out, and they can fix some cracks up to a certain amount of length, they’ll tell you that by looking at it. If it gets too bad, they can’t, of course. But they can go out quite a ways, believe it or not. And in some cases, they even have to drill the glass at the end, and they’ll inject it from each end into the crack to fix it so that they can get things sealed back up. but you’d be surprised the things they can actually fix when it’s all said and done but again you have to be clean not contaminated super glue does nothing but contaminate the crack it will not do anything to fix it it will not bond to the glass correctly it’s not going to keep the crack from chasing using that is nothing but detrimental to at that point you’re putting a windshield in it so So somebody saying, you know, go put $2 worth of super glue in your, in some cases, $1,000 plus windshield. Yeah, bad advice. So don’t do that. Get it fixed properly. And for those of you listening, the best thing to do, and this isn’t a bad idea, is throw some scotch tape. It’s cheap. Or, you know, your Christmas wrapping paper, if you’re getting down towards the end of the roll, throw the rest of that roll into the glove box. Kind of have it with you. If you ever get a crack or a chip like that, all you do is put some scotch tape on it, keep it nice and clean, and get it fixed as soon as you can. especially when we’re hot and cold like we are right now.
SPEAKER 06 :
And a lot of times, don’t they give you that little kit that looks like a little Band-Aid? Uh-huh.
SPEAKER 04 :
Novus has those as well.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, so have a few of those and put them in your glove box.
SPEAKER 04 :
You got it. So if you’ve got some of those that you can use or pick some up at Novus or if nothing else, scotch tape works, again, because they can peel that, you know, peel it off, razor blade it off, whatever they need to do, get in there and fix the crack, and then off you go. And, yeah, for a lot of you listening, windshield replacements, are getting to be more and more expensive all the time. And I will tell you this, because I was talking to Kent and Judy yesterday about this, the tariffs and what’s happening along those lines, believe it or not, a lot of windshields come out of areas where we’re going to get tariffed. Or they’re going to be tariffed, I should say. So there are going to be price increases most likely on glass, not only now but probably in the future as well. So for some of you that either you do your own windshield, you’re self-insured like Bob, and maybe you’ve got a crack or something now where you’re thinking maybe I should get that windshield done now versus later, yeah, do it now because prices are going to go up. And those of you that have insurance on those, it’ll be interesting to see how insurance works moving forward because these windshields continue to get more and more expensive because of all of the intricacies and things that are on them with a lot of the lane departure assist, blind spot, things like that. There’s all sorts of things going on in the windshield, the LiDAR and so on. And there’s a lot of things going on coming from the windshield itself, the cameras and so on that are mounted there. Some windshields, if you’re Driving a Range Rover, are heated, and on and on we go. I mean, these things are getting more and more expensive as time goes by, and it’s not any longer a one-size-fits-all. I think the last time I checked with Kent, just take an F-150 Ford, I think there could be up to 14, 15 different windshields for just a F-150. So it’s not like it used to be where you could even be a glass shop and stock one windshield and fit a lot of trucks. No, you can’t do that any longer. Everything is pretty much made for that vehicle. And in most cases, don’t be surprised when you make an appointment to get a windshield done. If they’re asking you for your VIN number, have that handy because most likely they’re going to ask you that to get the right windshield ordered for you because of what I just said a moment ago. And even then. you’re going to probably have to give them some other information about what’s on the vehicle because the VIN may not tell them everything. But, yes, on that particular situation, get that fixed as soon as possible. Myself, Steve Horvath from Geno’s. We’ll be right back. Drive Radio, KLZ 560. We’ve got a couple lines open, 303-477-5600.

You listen to Drive Radio because you have a lot of questions about your car. You have questions about what kind of oil to use, what the best tires are, where to get the best parts. But have you ever asked what will happen to your car after you die? Did you know that if you don’t have a will that specifically states what will happen, a probate judge will order your family to split your car evenly. And because you can’t cut up a car into pieces, your family will be forced to sell it and just split the money. According to Michael Bailey, the mobile estate planner, it is estimated that two out of three people don’t have a proper will in place. And oftentimes, things like your favorite classic car are accidentally forgotten completely. Michael understands that the only way to be absolutely certain that all of your final wishes will be honored is to take a small amount of time to talk about it. 720-394-6887 720-394-6887 Call Michael Bailey, the mobile estate planner, right now to set up a free consultation and make absolutely sure that you don’t leave anything to chance.

SPEAKER 10 :
Hey, John and Steve. It’s Chris with the 84 911. Yes, sir. How are you?
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 10 :
I wish Burke was on longer because I was going to call while he was on. He did an amazing appraisal for my car.
SPEAKER 04 :
Nice. Nice. I’m sure he’s listening, so thank you for that, Chris.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, I mean, he dug deep into the history of Porsches and air-cooled, and I was blown away.
SPEAKER 04 :
Nice. Nice. He’s a good guy. As you know, Chris, he’s a great guy.
SPEAKER 10 :
Oh, yeah. Oh, shoot. Yeah. Are you there? I am.
SPEAKER 04 :
We’re here.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yep. I just dropped. But, yeah, no, he spent a lot of time. I even took him for a ride. He loved it. And, no, I highly recommend him.
SPEAKER 04 :
Awesome.
SPEAKER 10 :
And guess what the price came in at?
SPEAKER 04 :
What?
SPEAKER 10 :
Hello?
SPEAKER 04 :
No, I’m here, Chris. What was it?
SPEAKER 1 :
$60,000.
SPEAKER 10 :
Awesome.
SPEAKER 04 :
Awesome. That’s great. So when are you selling? No, I’m not selling. You knew I had to ask. Forever. And for those of you that don’t know, because some of you might be in the dark, Chris has a beautiful, and I mean absolutely beautiful, red 911, and it is gorgeous. It’s a great car. And, I mean, Chris, you know me. I’m not mincing any words, and I would be very honest. I mean, that car is a 10 out of 10. It is a solid car. That’s beautiful.
SPEAKER 10 :
Oh, yes. Yeah, and I’ve, you know, it’s taken me four years to get it there, but I’m going to keep it.
SPEAKER 04 :
It’s gorgeous. It really is.
SPEAKER 10 :
And it’s so much fun to drive.
SPEAKER 04 :
It’s a great car. I’m envious. Yep.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yep. So, yeah, your wife, she should get one.
SPEAKER 04 :
I know. I know. She’s probably listening, you know, throwing her hands up in the air and saying hurrah. Yeah, I know. I know.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, but she’d probably want a newer one.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, I don’t know. She’d take that one of yours in a heartbeat.
SPEAKER 10 :
Well, it’s raw. You’ve got to hang on when you’re driving.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, she would take that in a heartbeat. Trust me.
SPEAKER 1 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 09 :
Great, great, great.
SPEAKER 04 :
You’re the man, Chris. Appreciate you very much. Thank you very much. Have a good one, Chris. Jeff in Englewood, go ahead.
SPEAKER 09 :
Hey, Jeff. Oh, John, sorry.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, you’re fine.
SPEAKER 09 :
Go ahead, Jeff. I got a question about a 2014 Ford Escape. Okay. It’s my mom’s car.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 09 :
Now, she was driving back home from the church, which is only 0.9, and this tranny has never been… had an issue or anything like that, but it all of a sudden stopped. Not just stopped, but she had to wind it up to get it to move.
SPEAKER 06 :
What do you think it is? It kind of went into neutral kind of a feeling?
SPEAKER 09 :
It’s a 1.6.
SPEAKER 06 :
No, I mean, it just felt like it went into neutral, like it was in park or something.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, just all of a sudden, it’s run fine for the whole time she’s had it, and then all of a sudden it just
SPEAKER 06 :
The fluid level hasn’t dropped any, no leaks or anything like that?
SPEAKER 09 :
That would be the first thing I would think. There’s no dipstick on that.
SPEAKER 06 :
There’s no leaks. Right.
SPEAKER 09 :
And I took it for a test drive after she got home, and you’ve got to wind it up to get it to go into gear.
SPEAKER 06 :
So it’s still doing it now?
SPEAKER 09 :
Uh-huh. Okay. Yeah, you’ve got to get the RPMs up to get it to go into gear.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, I think we better try to get that in and get it looked at. Absolutely. Get a scanner on it and something. I mean, it could be something as simple as a speed sensor or something. Maybe the two aren’t correlating and it doesn’t know where to go, kind of a thing. The computer gets confused.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, it’s kind of weird because it just all of a sudden started.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah. Normally you get some signs of things.
SPEAKER 09 :
Like out of nowhere. Yeah. I put a code, just a regular OBD scanner. Yeah, no codes, no nothing, no leaks.
SPEAKER 06 :
Okay. Okay. Yeah, I think you have to do some diagnosing on that one to see what’s happening. And you don’t get a good sample of what’s going on with that fluid, too. You have to get a little bit out of there and see what’s happening.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, about six months ago, she had all the boxes checked and new fluids and all that kind of stuff.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, and do you… That was six months ago. Okay, yeah, probably nothing from that because that’s too… I mean, it’s too long ago for that to probably have an effect today, so I would highly doubt there’s any issues there.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, it’s kind of weird because it just started right out of nowhere. I’m with Steve, though.
SPEAKER 04 :
You’re in England. You’re not that far from Steve. Have him take a peek at it and see what’s going on. They can do that. Over at Geno’s? Yeah. Over at Geno’s. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah. Let me take a look at it and see what’s happening. They did the breaks.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 09 :
Great. Thank you. A couple months ago. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Okay. Just have her take it down.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yep. Have her take it over there. They’ll take care of her.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah. Well, I’m afraid to drive it.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. Yeah. You might have to have a toad. Yeah, I don’t know that I would try to drive it, period, given that, because you might do more damage than it’s worth. So, yeah, probably hook it and probably don’t hook them anymore. Flatbed it over.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, it’s kind of intense when you’ve got to step on the gas.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, I wouldn’t drive it if that’s the case.
SPEAKER 09 :
All right. All right, cool. So how much is probably a diode in oxygen, do you think?
SPEAKER 06 :
Oh, we generally get about $150 for just the diagnostic, just checking it out.
SPEAKER 09 :
Okay, cool. Cool. I appreciate it, guys.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right, thank you very much. No, Jeff, appreciate you. I think I’m going to end on this. I had somebody texting asking about and kind of going back and forth via e-mail, and I think it’s easier for me to explain this on air than it is even on e-mail because I can say a lot more than I can actually type out, especially as I’m on air. talking and that is you know who would I recommend if any when it comes to a extended warranty which they’re not the only real extended warranty you can buy in terminology matters words matter the only extended warranty you can buy is from the manufacturer of the car anything else you buy is a service contract they are not extended warranties because no one can extend the warranty beyond its lifespan besides the manufacturer of that particular item, in this case, a car. So if you want an extended warranty on, for example, that Ford we were just talking about a moment ago, that would have to come from Ford themselves, not from an extended service contract. Most dealers, by the way… It’s funny how that works. They will make it sound like it’s an extended warranty, but they’re typically selling you a contract. Sometimes they’ll sell you the actual Ford one. Sometimes they’ll give you the option of either or. But most dealers are pushing service contracts because there’s more profit in that than there is in the actual extended warranty that would be sold through Ford or Stellantis or GM or Toyota or whoever. So I want to make sure that we’re very clear on that on the front side. Big difference between service contract and extended warranty. I am not a service contract fan at all. If you’re ever going to buy anything at all, buy the actual extended warranty from the manufacturer. They’re expensive. I still don’t think they’re worth it at the end of the day. But if you’re one that wants that peace of mind buying a new car, buy the one from the factory itself. Don’t buy any of the extended contracts. And I mean that sincerely. Even the ones that are on TV and that you get emails on and so on, or the ones that are chasing you down trying to sell you one on the phone. Doesn’t matter. They’re all the same. They all exclude a lot of items. They will all still require you to do proper maintenance, which, by the way, if you do proper maintenance, you typically aren’t going to have problems anyways. So my theory and my feeling on this has always been and I’ve proven it time and time again, whatever that contract would cost you. Two grand, let’s say. And they’re going to bill you that over the course of the next X amount of months as a part of that. Take that same exact money, put it into a special money market savings account, have it sit there, still do your normal proper maintenance out of your other budget like you should be, And most likely, by the time you get several years down the road, you’ll have that money sitting in that money market account you can go use for something else because you’ll never have used it in the first place. And believe me, I know this because service contract companies wouldn’t be in business if they weren’t making money off of the contract you’re buying. No different than buying insurance on your car. It’s the same exact model, and that’s how these guys do it and stay in business. So, no, I am not an extended service contract fan. I don’t care how many electronic components are on the car. I don’t care how integrated the car gets. The reality is, at the end of the day, if you do your proper maintenance and put that money aside that you normally would have put into that service contract, you’ll be money ahead. Right, Steve? Yep.
SPEAKER 06 :
And I always find it interesting, why would they want to sell a contract on the car? There’s a brand new car they’re selling you. Isn’t it a great car anyways?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. Thank you. So, yeah, at the end of the day, you guys know our feelings. Steve is exactly the way I am. So with that, Steve from Geno’s, give him your phone number really quick.
SPEAKER 06 :
303-794-6700.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. With that, we’re going to get out of here. Charlie Grimes, our engineer for today, and Larry Unger answering phones for us also. Thank you guys very much. Have a great rest of your weekend. Drive Radio, KLZ 560.
