SPEAKER 03 :
Welcome to the Mike Gallagher Show Week in Review podcast. It’s Friday, February 21st. This week we ask, is Doge cutting enough? Plus, is free speech on the chopping block in America? And we take the show to the White House. Let’s begin in the Indian Treaty Room at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, where we met President Trump’s new press secretary, Caroline Levin. I’m allowed two questions with one of the most popular ladies in the building, Caroline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, of course, Salem, and the Trump administration would go back. We used to do these events in Trump 1.0. Yes. Listen, can I just ask you on a personal level, every day when you walk into that White House press briefing room, do you feel like the Christian facing the lions? I mean, is it an emotional thing or is it just kind of because you’re doing a flawless job?
SPEAKER 08 :
Thank you, Mike, for saying that. I definitely feel blessed to be in this job and for such a time as this. And I just go out there and speak the truth and try to effectively communicate the president’s message as best as I can. Knowing I’m going into a room of people who would like to see me fail, I think it makes me feel empowered. And I’m so blessed to have a great team who helps me prepare and helps me get the answers that I need to speak the truth out there. And it’s a lot of fun.
SPEAKER 03 :
I talk to callers all over the country who continually root for you. Do you feel that kind of support from grassroots Americans who see what you’re up against? And do you know what they’re saying?
SPEAKER 08 :
I definitely do. And thank you to all of your listeners and your audience who call and say nice things. It really does mean a lot. And I do feel that. I feel the prayers. And I see the comments online. And it’s very flattering. But I don’t get complacent because every day is a new challenge. Every day is a new news cycle. And we have our foot on the gas here at the White House. And you look at what the president has done. We are fundamentally transforming our country. And that’s exactly what the American people elected him to do. And he’s done so much good in just four short weeks. We have four more years to go. So America is the golden age. There’s no doubt about it.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, I promised them two questions because you’re so busy, but I wanted the opportunity just to say thank you on behalf of the American people for the great work you’re doing. Keep fighting the good fight because we’re in for a ride.
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, thank you, Mike, and thanks to all your audience at Salem. We appreciate you guys.
SPEAKER 03 :
Keep fighting the good fight.
SPEAKER 08 :
Thank you.
SPEAKER 03 :
Free speech was all over the news this week. It seems our American media now, well, opposes free speech. Look no further than CBS’s 60 Minutes when they practically gushed over Germany’s new laws curbing free expression. 60 Minutes featured Germany and what they do with free speech. This, to me, is one of the most important issues that we could tackle. And look, we’ve got a lot of breaking news today. We’re not going to miss it all. Doge is working to cut down on government waste. The Democrats are melting down. They’re marching around with their stupid, not my president. Oh, really? Well, get ready. He is your president. I don’t care if you like him or you don’t like him. He’s your president. So you better get used to it because you’ve got four years to cope and seethe and boil over the fact that the election didn’t go your way. I hate to break it to you. Sometimes elections don’t go your way. We know what that feels like. Our side knows. So now your side, you better cope. And Sunday night, I saw this report on Germany where they’re arresting people for posting opinions. In fact, the 60 Minutes report said, includes German officials admitting you could be arrested for insulting somebody in public. Let that sink in. In Germany, you can be arrested for insulting somebody in public. Now, Jesse Waters, on Fox News last night, talked about how we cherish the right to insult one another. And let’s be clear. We do. We cherish the ability to have sharp elbows and insult one another. You don’t like what I say? You call in. You can call me a big dummy. You’ve insulted me. You know how many times I get insulted in my day-to-day job? You lose track after an hour or two. Not everybody agrees with everybody, but that’s America. That’s how we roll. And last night, Jesse Waters did a great job in talking about President Trump shepherding in this era where we really do value free speech, unlike the dirty Democrats who’d like to put the rest of us in prison.
SPEAKER 07 :
Do you think, Jesse, that establishment media figures like Brennan are laying the groundwork for further speech restrictions under the guise of preventing harm?
SPEAKER 06 :
They tried and failed. And now Trump is going to usher in a golden age of free speech in America, whether the Democrats like it or not. The Nazis abolished free speech. You weren’t even allowed to criticize the Nazi party. You couldn’t even make a joke about Hitler. And he had a stupid looking mustache and one testicle. Plenty of material there. Books were burned. Radio stations were censored. Newspapers were shut down. You actually got put to death in Germany for listening to the BBC. That happened a couple of times. So you think the media, because they’re always comparing the Trump people to the Nazis, would know something about the Nazis? You know, you had record inflation, radical medical experiments on people, anti-Semitism, militarism. I would never compare the Democratic Party to the Nazis because I think that comparison is reckless. Why is CBS defending Germany, though, over the United States of America? Well, it’s not like they’re England. They started two world wars recently. People’s grandfather, people’s father, who were older, were slaughtered by the Germans. Not to mention all the millions of Jewish people they exterminated. All of a sudden, we have to start tiptoeing around the Germans?
SPEAKER 03 :
Why? You want to know what a real dictatorship is like? You want to know what horrific, fascistic tactics are like in 2025? Not World War II, not Nazi Germany. We’re talking Germany today. This actually aired Sunday night on 60 Minutes.
SPEAKER 10 :
Is it a crime to insult somebody in public?
SPEAKER 03 :
Yes, it is.
SPEAKER 10 :
And it’s a crime to insult them online as well? Yes.
SPEAKER 05 :
The fine could be even higher if you insult someone in the Internet. Why? Because in Internet, it stays there. If we are talking here face-to-face, you insult me, I insult you, okay, finish. But in the Internet, if I insult you or a politician… It sticks around forever. Yeah.
SPEAKER 10 :
If somebody posts something that’s not true and then somebody else reposts it or likes it, are they committing a crime?
SPEAKER 01 :
In the case of reposting, it is a crime as well because the reader can’t distinguish whether you just invented this or just reposted it. That’s the same for us.
SPEAKER 10 :
The punishment for breaking hate speech laws can include jail time for repeat offenders. But in most cases, a judge levies a stiff fine and sometimes keeps their devices. How do people react when you take their phones from them?
SPEAKER 12 :
They are shocked.
SPEAKER 10 :
It’s 6.01 on a Tuesday morning, and we were with state police as they raided this apartment in northwest Germany. Inside, six armed officers searched the suspect’s home, then seized his laptop and cell phone. Prosecutors say those electronics may have been used to commit a crime. The crime, posting a racist cartoon online. At the exact same time across Germany, more than 50 similar raids played out. Part of what prosecutors say is a coordinated effort to curb online hate speech in Germany.
SPEAKER 03 :
Just by imagination, or does CBS’s Sharon Alfonsi sound a little giddy at the prospect of six armed police raiding a man’s home? to confiscate his devices and arrest him, potentially, for posting a meme online. You understand we were one election away from having that be our reality. Vice President J.D. Vance made a speech recently and addressed the rising tide of thought crime prosecution in Europe. He leaves no doubt where he stands on the issue. Here’s what J.D. Vance, the vice president, said that had all the European leaders up in arms.
SPEAKER 11 :
And unfortunately, when I look at Europe today, it’s sometimes not so clear what happened to some of the Cold War’s winners. I look to Brussels, where EU commissars warn citizens that they intend to shut down social media during times of civil unrest the moment they spot what they’ve judged to be, quote, hateful content. Or to this very country, where police have carried out raids against citizens suspected of posting anti-feminist comments online as part of, quote, combating misogyny on the internet, a day of action. I look to Sweden, where two weeks ago the government convicted a Christian activist for participating in Koran burnings that resulted in his friend’s murder. And as the judge in his case chillingly noted, Sweden’s laws to supposedly protect free expression do not, in fact, grant, and I’m quoting, a free pass to do or say anything without risking offending the group that holds that belief. And perhaps most concerningly, I look to our very dear friends, the United Kingdom, where the backslide away from conscience rights has placed the basic liberties of religious Britons in particular in the crosshairs. A little over two years ago, the British government charged Adam Smith Connor, a 51-year-old physiotherapist and an Army veteran, with the heinous crime of standing 50 meters from an abortion clinic and silently praying for three minutes. Not obstructing anyone, not interacting with anyone, just silently praying on his own. After British law enforcement spotted him and demanded to know what he was praying for, Adam replied simply, it was on behalf of the unborn son he and his former girlfriend had aborted years before. Now, the officers were not moved. Adam was found guilty of breaking the government’s new buffer zones law, which criminalizes silent prayer and other actions that could influence a person’s decision within 200 meters of an abortion facility. He was sentenced to pay thousands of pounds in legal costs to the prosecution. Now, I wish I could say that this was a fluke, a one-off crazy example of a badly written law being enacted against a single person. But no, this last October, just a few months ago, the Scottish government began distributing letters to citizens whose houses lay within so-called safe access zones, warning them that even private prayer within their own homes may amount to breaking the law. Naturally, the government urged readers to report any fellow citizens suspected guilty of thought crime. In Britain and across Europe, free speech, I fear, is in retreat.
SPEAKER 03 :
Now, this speech, what you just heard, led the outgoing chairman of the Munich Security Conference to break down in tears. Christoph Hugson said, after the speech of Vice President Vance, we have to fear that our common value base is not that common anymore. And the guy started weeping. As if anything that J.D. Vance said could lead a leader to break down in tears. Well, let’s look at reality according to 60 Minutes. At 60 Minutes reported that you could go to prison for a meme you post. If you’ve ever dared to comment on a social media post, you might have to wonder if you could have been next had Kamala Harris won. Let’s go back to the White House where we caught up with our former colleague and current member of the Trump administration, Dr. Sebastian Gorka. Dr. G, it’s been 30 days. Are all the terrorists eradicated now all over the world?
SPEAKER 14 :
Aren’t you watching the president’s Twitter feed? Can I tell you one story? The beginning. So I went, I was less than two weeks in, and I’m going across the government. I’m talking to our… tip of the spear, our intelligence community, and they’re just telling me this horror story everywhere that for four years we couldn’t kill bad guys. We were watching them. We were watching them plot, build these terror networks, these cave complexes, and the White House said, yeah, don’t worry about it. So… We went to the president, Mike Waltz, the National Security Advisor, myself, a military member of my team, and we said, we’ve been surveilling for a year and a half this ISIS terror compound in the caves of northern Somalia. We’re in the Oval, and the president goes, what do you mean we’ve been watching them for a year and a half? And he said, kill them. And so with that big, fat Sharpie pen… He did yes on this action order. We communicated it to the various commands. Less than 32 hours later, Saturday morning, I’m in the Situation Room underneath the West Wing with National Security Advisor Waltz, with my team. And it’s like… It’s like a movie, but it’s real because the situation room has all been redone. It’s, you know, floor-to-ceiling TV screens. And so we’re watching this operation. In real time. In real time on the other side of the planet. The go time was 9.50 Saturday morning. Mike hadn’t arrived yet, and it’s 9.48. Where’s the National Security Advisor? And he walks in literally, Mike, 90 seconds before the bomb drop. We sit down, and then… And we see this thing. Then my team member, God bless you, John, amazing, declassifies the video in less than four hours from our assets. The president, of course, tweets it out. And then there’s this one line. It’s all you need to know. If you want to kill Americans in block letters, we will find you. We will kill you. So, yeah, we’ve raised the bar in terms of making America safe again.
SPEAKER 03 :
I had a top administration official this morning, after I got here to this complex, say, Seb Gorka and his team are getting blank done. And that’s a great way, and I’ve known you for years, and of course we’re all cheering for you because you’ve been our colleague and our friend. But that’s what it feels like, that this golden era is a chance for the Trump administration to get stuff done, to fix the mess that Biden has left us, not only domestically, but certainly in your sphere. And that’s the world of counterterrorism.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, look, let me be very clear here and appreciate whoever that colleague was. This isn’t about me. This is the fact that President Trump and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz prioritize counterterrorism. I have an amazing team of the best of the best in my directorate here at the National Security Council. And we’re just responding to what we are being told by those who’ve taken an oath I was at JSOC yesterday, Joint Special Operations Command in Bragg. These are the people who put their lives on the line. We’re just facilitating what needs to be done. And I did an interview before the inauguration. You know, there are these moments where the big guy just plugs the USB in your head and these words come out that you didn’t rehearse. And somebody said, so what’s your vision for counterterrorism under President Trump? And I just said, protecting the innocent and bringing justice to evildoers. Mike, is it more complicated than that? It’s not any harder than that. And thanks to my wife, who was a presidential appointee in the Department of Homeland Security, she reoriented my compass last week. And she said, you know, everywhere you go across government when you’re trying to dojify counterterrorism, you know, the only question you have to ask, Seb, how have we learned the 9-11 lesson? Because the president lays a focus on one thing. Are any of these places in the world, these benighted regions, being used to plan attacks against American citizens? That’s the only question that matters. So this kind of recalibration to the basics is what I see as my mission.
SPEAKER 03 :
One of the things you’ve been successful in my world is being able to identify people the difference between good and evil. You’re a guy that has, you have a very clear focus and you’re able to say there’s a lot of evil around us. This week we’re learning about Hamas. They apparently slaughtered a young mother and those two babies. These two little babies. That’s the face of evil and yet in America we’ve got people walking around on college campuses lifting Hamas up. That’s a major failing of the left. Is it not that they’re an inability to identify what true evil is like?
SPEAKER 14 :
Well, it’s not an inability, Mike. It’s a conscious choice. When you deny the existence of God… then there is no objective truth. Therefore, they can’t be good. This is, you know, moral relativity, modern secular thought processes. And that’s why this is… I mean, my wife and I were fighting this for eight years under Obama when the then counterterrorism director, John Brennan, said, oh, terrorism… That’s a function of poverty and lack of education, which if were true, then half of India would be terrorists, and they’re not. So what is it? It’s ideology. It’s evil, the evil that lurks in the hearts of men. And because of my parents’ background, who suffered as children under… fascism and then under communism as adults, this is the baggage I bring to the table or the clarity. Evil is real. And if you don’t admit it exists, well, guess what? Evil will be done and evil will just metastasize and grow. President Trump understands it. When he is clear about you want to kill Americans, we’re going to find you and we’re going to bring down the hammers of hell on you. That’s clarity.
SPEAKER 03 :
Getting stuff done. Final question, because I know how busy you are in this neat media row that we have here in the Indian Treaty Room. And by the way, I’m stunned we can call it the Indian Treaty Room. I thought Biden would have changed it by now. Oh, no, no, no, no. And if he had, we would have changed it back. But not too shabby, right, Mike? Not too shabby. Beautiful, beautiful surround. Not the Seb Gorka studio over in Roslyn, but still a beautiful studio. And on that note, final question. Somebody asked me to ask you this question. You had a cushy gig. You had a talk show, Newsmax personality. The White House, President Trump himself calls, makes the call. How hard is that for you on a very personal level to say, you know what, I’m going to devote my time now to serving my country, and I’m going to leave behind this pretty cushy gig? Because let’s face it, I’ve been a talk show host a lot of years. It ain’t working in a coal mine. What’s that like for you? Can you talk about that personal decision? Was that a hard call?
SPEAKER 14 :
No, because I’m married to Katie Gawker. As I told her on her podcast with Jennifer Horne yesterday, the only reason I’m here at the pinnacle of my career, waiting 24 years for this job, is because of my wife. A wife who, on September the 11th, said, hey, you know something about counterterrorism? Call up the TV studio. And I said, what do you mean? You can’t call up the TV studio. And I did. I was live on camera for the next six hours. That’s how it all started. And when I said to her, look, are you prepared for us to take a 90% pay cut? Are you prepared not to see me for 12 hours a day? And she said, absolutely. So I’m only here because of Katie Gorka, because it’s not an honor to be asked by the president to serve. It is a duty to serve the nation. So yeah, with Katie Gorka behind me, it was easy.
SPEAKER 03 :

While we were at the White House this week, we got to speak to the new Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Doug Collins, our former Salem podcaster. All right, to Salem audiences, Doug Collins, of course, was a great podcaster, of course, congressman, and a guy who’s been around Georgia politics for a long time, and now a man who’s in a very, very important position with the Veterans Affairs Administrator. Mr. Secretary, it’s great to see you.
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, it’s good to see you as well. Glad to be up here. It’s going to be a good day. And believe me, we’ve been swimming real fast since I’ve been here.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, this is the first kind of White House event where, you know, we did this in the first Trump presidency. Shockingly, Joe Biden didn’t invite any of us into the White House to talk to administration officials.
SPEAKER 15 :
And, Mike, I’m standing. I need to sit down for that sign of shock. You know, really, Biden didn’t want to press it. But we’re going to be much more transparent. I mean, I think we’ve got a generation in, and you’re seeing from the other cabinet secretaries, we’re friends. Not only in the other cabinets, we work together. We’re used to using social media. We’re used to using information to get the real truth out there. Because right now, if you depend on this city to get the truth out, You’re not going to get it.
SPEAKER 03 :
Arguably, it’s how Trump won the White House the second time. You’re right, mobilizing influencers, social media. Mr. Secretary, let’s talk about cleaning up the mess, because that really is what you’re tasked with doing. With Doge, there’s been a lot of claims. Old veterans’ benefits are being slashed. There’s, of course, a lot of scare tactics on the left. That’s part of the mess you’ve got to clean up, too, to make sure that the right information gets out.
SPEAKER 15 :
Exactly. One of the things that we’ve committed to is I’m going to confront lies when I see lies. I’m just not going to call them. But when you’re fear-mongering among the veterans, and I consider this very personal, if you’re fear-mongering among veterans and their families, I’m going to call you out for it. Just on the Hill today, a senator actually said that personal information was being taken and that we were considering our veterans as roadkill. No, roadkill is the false information that is out there that is scaring veterans. That’s got to stop. We have protected a person’s information. We are actually putting monies back toward our veterans. And we’re doing the things that should have been done before. Every business in the world, every government in the world looks at itself and says, what can we do better? If they don’t like that, that just tells me they like the situation it is because they basically like government better than we do.
SPEAKER 03 :
Mr. Secretary, I got a call from one of your former constituents in Georgia who said Doug Collins is the right guy for this job because veterans know the VA is kind of a mess. I mean, that’s the problem. And so it’s a double-edged sword because you don’t want to slash their benefits. You don’t want to make it harder for veterans to get what they need. But you still got a mess on your
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, well, and that’s where we’ve committed. In the process, we’ve had some layoffs already. There’s a lot of changes still going on, but we did something that others, even in the hiring freeze, we exempted almost 300,000 positions or more of doctors and nurses, front-line facing workers. So none of our people who come to our health care centers or our CBOCs are going to find any deficiency. When they go to the benefits, we make sure that those jobs were protected as well. So if a benefit needed for, they needed to talk to somebody, they got somebody there. This lie that we’re cutting these benefits, we’re not cutting a benefit yet. I’ll challenge any of them, come show me the benefit. It’s just a lie. But they’ve got nothing else. They’ve seen an administration come in here for the last three or four weeks now and just start a revolution in the sense of let’s think about how we’re doing government. And they can’t stand it. So if you’re a veteran out there listening to this, no benefit’s been cut, your personal information is safe, and the health care system is open, we’re going to be there for you. Sure.
SPEAKER 03 :
To quote your constituent, veterans in good hands with Doug Collins at the helm, I have to ask you in closing, I know how busy you are, is this a whirlwind that is hard to keep up with? I mean, for those of us covering this, we think, how are any of these people in the Trump administration able to get…
SPEAKER 15 :
8, 10, 12, 14 hours a day? We’re getting more than that. I’m back to my about five or six hours sleep, and life is good. We’re ready to go. Wasn’t it easier when you’re doing the podcast for Salem? Well, then I can get up when I wanted to, but not now. 5.30 comes early. Mr. Secretary, great seeing you. Thanks for joining us on the Mike Gallagher Show. Mike, it’s always good to be with you, buddy. Take care.
SPEAKER 03 :
The Doge Express keeps rolling along and Democrats can’t stand it. But to some, like venture capitalist and Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary, Doge needs to cut faster and cut more. How must it feel to be on the wrong side of this? You’re opposing government efficiency? You think having government efficiency is a reign of terror? Look, Kevin O’Leary yesterday, last night on CNN, said Doge isn’t even doing enough. This is a guy, Kevin O’Leary from Shark Tank. He’s one of the rotating figures on this CNN Abby Phillips panel. And Kevin O’Leary last night said, look, you always go deeper and harder. This is what good companies do to trim the fat. It happens all the time. Companies have to do this. Southwest Airlines just laid off a bunch of people. A lot of the media outlets are laying off people. You’ve got to trim the fat. Well, in this case, what Trump is doing with Doge, what President Trump’s administration is doing is trimming the fat and getting rid of the excess on behalf of the American people. This is our money. I don’t work for Southwest Airlines. And unless you do, you don’t either. Those are private companies. Listen to what Kevin O’Leary said last night, really infuriating the panel on CNN. He says that Trump and Elon and Doge, they may not even be going far enough.
SPEAKER 09 :
There’s this concept in private equity when you get a bankrupt company and you go in there, you cut 20% more than your initial read. And then you find like a pool of mercury, the organization gels back together again. Always cut deeper, harder when there’s fat and waste. The FAA, it’s not the people. The code is cobalt. It’s from the 60s. It needs CapEx put into it for the technology to be upgraded to make it safer. fat like a chicken all of these agencies are like big fat chickens dripping over barbecues of fat this is the best barbecue i’ve ever seen but i don’t think it’s happening fast enough they’re not cutting enough keep slashing keep hacking while you have a 24 month mandate before the midterms cut cut cut cut cut cut more more cutting believe me it’s going to work out just great
SPEAKER 03 :
And not to the Democrats. It’s a reign of terror. Wow. Back at the White House, we spoke to the new Treasury Secretary, Scott Besson, about the challenges he faces in the days that lie ahead. Mr. Secretary, I know you’ve got so much to do here, and we appreciate taking a couple of minutes to join us on the Mike Gallagher Show. What does it feel like? to be the Treasury Secretary at a time like this, where waste is being uncovered, Doge is uncovering all kinds of extra… I mean, it must be like almost a banker watching the piggy bank getting sorted out.
SPEAKER 13 :
Well, look, I’m the number one bond salesman for the United States of America, and I’ve got a great story to tell that if we can get the spending down through… capturing this waste, fraud, and abuse, and then we’ll get interest rates down, and we make permanent the Tax Cuts and Job Act, so revenue’s up, spending down, that’s a pretty successful formula.
SPEAKER 03 :
It’s hard to believe that the Democrats are opposing government efficiency. I’m old enough to remember when they liked government efficiency.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, I’ve got a feeling that when you’re looking at waste, fraud and abuse and the way they’re squawking, that we’re getting close to a lot of people’s cheese. And it’s not their cheese. It’s the American people’s cheese. And it’s time to give it back.
SPEAKER 03 :
This was a scary moment actually captured on camera. London police tried to arrest a woman, not for what she was saying, but for what she was thinking. Thank goodness we’re not the UK. Tracy, my producer, found this clip from X. These are the British police questioning a woman who was literally silently praying. And as you’ll hear in this alarming clip, it almost appears as if the police are ready to charge her for a crime for how she prayed. Not even praying out loud, but silently. Are you protesting? No.
SPEAKER 04 :
Are you here to pray for the lives of unborn children?
SPEAKER 02 :
As I’ve mentioned to one of your colleagues before, I think that’s a little bit of a leading question. No, I’m not, actually, today.
SPEAKER 04 :
Can you actually be carried out elsewhere? No.
SPEAKER 02 :
I’m not doing any actions. I’m just simply thinking silently in my head. This is an abortion centre. I’m praying for those who’ve been hurt by abortion.
SPEAKER 04 :
So, when I said before, are you here to pray for the lives of unborn children?
SPEAKER 02 :
Yes. I said no. I’m praying for those who’ve been hurt by abortion. Hurt by abortion? Yes, that’s right.
SPEAKER 04 :
Are you aware there’s a public spade protection order in place here?
SPEAKER 02 :
Yes, I don’t know if you know, but I have actually been arrested twice. I’ve gone to court and been acquitted for allegedly my silent prayers. I’ve actually received an email from the police telling me I’m allowed to be in this area. I don’t know if you’re familiar with that situation at all. This is an exclusion area? Yes, that’s right. That’s why I was arrested previously. So, yes, I’m very much aware there’s a PSPO in place. OK.
SPEAKER 03 :
That’s enough. I can’t take any more of that. I cannot take… I love… I respect and cherish law enforcement. You saw that police officer. He’s reading scripted questions. And you could tell he was trying to get her to say that she was silently praying. And she initially denies it because she knows what’s going to happen.
