Appreciate Bill filling in the last couple of weeks for me. And he’s becoming an integral part of what we do here on Ready Radio, Bill Anderson. But he is out, actually on vacation as well. So, Bill, if you’re listening, I appreciate you very much. Thanks for all that you do. And several things I want to discuss today. You can also text us a question or a comment, 307. 200 82 22 307 282 22 so first things first and i don’t pay a lot of attention to the news and things when i’m out on vacation and so when i talk about that on the daily program but i did notice this past week which i thought would be a really good topic for ready radio today And I’m not sure that they will ever admit, even if they do know what happened, I don’t know if they’ll ever admit to the entire blackout that they had, the power outage in Spain and Portugal. It affected a large part of Europe. I think there were, oh, I don’t know, tens of millions affected. of individuals businesses and so on that were without power and it lasted a couple of days and i think they’ve now gotten everything back up and restored and at first they had an excuse of there was some sort of a atmospheric disturbance that was one of the first things i read this past week and i’m like yeah i doubt it probably not now could be you know i could be wrong and that could be Although I highly doubt that’s the case. And the reason I say that is because if it was that type of a disturbance, chances of it affecting them and them only is probably slim. Some, some, I don’t know, I don’t have an opinion on this one way or the other. I haven’t studied enough to know or talk to anybody on the inside that can give any insight as to what exactly happened in that particular power outage. But some say that a lot of it has to do with their high share of renewable energy, solar and so on, and that something there happened. happened regardless here’s the point of the program today it affected tens of millions of people to the point where they didn’t have wi-fi they couldn’t pump fuel i mean this was almost like an apocalypse type setting to where literally everything was out and granted it the rest of the world wasn’t so there was ability somehow for them to communicate uh with others but bottom line It did affect a lot of people. Some are also claiming that maybe it was a cyber attack and on and on we go. The prime minister, Spanish prime minister, is calling for answers. Again, will we ever know what actually happened and why the power went out? No, I don’t think we ever will. And even if they do know, I doubt if they ever admit to you what exactly it is. And even if they do. chances of it being some made-up excuse as to what happened, that I could believe. Will you get to the real crux of what actually happened? I highly doubt it. Keep in mind, this shut down airports, transportation, all sorts of things were really, I was reading it as I was gone, at a standstill. And again, millions of people, tens of millions of people affected by that. And my point is this could happen anywhere. This could happen anywhere. And for those of you that are here in our country, those of you that might even travel, some of you travel on a local basis, some travel internationally. These are things that, again, we talk about this stuff on Ready Radio on a regular basis. I’ve done entire one-hour programs on if this were to happen while you’re traveling. Are you prepared? I can go back in the archives and even find some of those programs we’ve done. But literally, if this were to happen to you, you’re getting off the airplane or you’re traveling, you’re in your hotel, whatever the case may be, and there’s some sort of a total blackout, how are you managing even while you’re away? Because remember, when you’re traveling, you don’t have all the same items with you that you would normally have. And I’ve got some essential items I’m going to talk about today in regards to the show alone, which kind of tie into what we’re talking about here. But… Bottom line, if this were to happen to you while you’re traveling, how do you survive? And I get it. It’s only a couple of days. But, man, for a lot of people, there are folks out there that would struggle to even go a couple of days without power, especially when you can’t travel, can’t do anything. Now, in this case, it didn’t shut down vehicles other than the lack of fuel for some that would be running on empty, of course. But the reality is this was a big way. Me, personally, I look at this as a big wake-up call across the world as far as how the grids, grids plural, function. And the reality that this literally could happen, I think, to a lot of places. We’ve seen huge power outages in the wintertime in Texas because they have their own grid and they rely a lot also on renewable energy and they’ve had issues there. You know, we see these things happen from time to time. And I know I talk a lot about, are you ready in case the power goes out? I’m going to continue to talk about, are you ready if and when the power goes out? Because I think that’s one of our largest concerns. threats, I guess that’s the right way to say that, that we could face when it comes to our modern civilization, power. And the fact that… All of us, myself included. I mean, what we’re doing right now requires power. I wouldn’t be on air right now without power. We as a station have backup generation just in case things go completely down. We have the ability to do an emergency broadcast. We can help in that particular end of things. We can still broadcast our shows and other things. Reality is, though, we have backup generation because, again, we can’t do this without power. Well, Charlie, you gave a great point there in my ear a moment ago. How do people hear us without power? You’ve got to have some sort of a portable radio battery operated, some of them. I have a wind-up one to where you can actually wind it up, and it generates its own internal electricity, if you would, that give you the ability to listen to certain stations, emergency broadcasts, which we are one of those, and there are some other stations in town that are also. So the reality is, though, Yes, how would you actually listen to these things? In this case, there was even cell phones that were down. A good percentage of cell phones weren’t even working because, again, the Internet itself was down. Cell towers were down. Some of those have backup generation for a limited amount of time. And depending upon how they’re set up, they may not have any. There’s a lot of cell towers with no generation backup. Some of the larger sites will have generation backup. But not all do. And you can typically look at different sites and know whether that’s actually got backup generation or not. And the way they do that is they will put in certain towers with certain, some of you that are in that industry know more about this than I do, but they will put certain towers on generator backup, and I’m guessing so they can get spotty coverage if they need to. It won’t be like you would have normally with all the different cell towers that interlace, but they pick prime towers. Towers, I guess you could say, that they want to keep operational. And I know this from personal experience. They will typically pick those that are the highest and have the most effect upon an area. They’ll do generation backup for those particular sites, but they don’t do it for every site. So point being, in this case, they even lost cell service. So I go back to, if this were to happen to you personally, Do you have the ability to survive and get by in case power is out for an extended period of time, even while you’re traveling? And again, that’s a question that I ask a lot of people a lot of the time, because frankly, I don’t think most people put much thought into it. They just flip the switch. They start the car. They do whatever they need to do. And off they go. And nobody thinks twice about how that power is actually delivered. And what if… Something were to happen to where that power is no longer delivered. What do you do? And this is a big one, by the way. You guys know. I mean, a lot of you listening travel on a routine basis. Do you have the ability to handle things along those lines if you’re traveling and there’s no power? Mark, go ahead, sir.

Awesome. Did you get some suntan?
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, I had some sun. I mean, you know, weather over there is always a little bit dicey at times. It’s this time of the year where it can rain and so on. But, you know, all in all, still good. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 03 :
Good. So I got a question. This is the second time this has happened since I got a smartphone. My dog decided to use it as a chew toy. Oh, boy. And cracked the screen so I could see the screen, but I couldn’t access anything.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right.
SPEAKER 03 :
And so, therefore, I can’t text anybody online. and nor can I do any banking. And so when I was trying to log into my bank accounts, that was a no-go because they try to send you the two-step verification via text. And I couldn’t open the phone to access the text to be able to access my banking. Not only could I not text, I couldn’t do any banking either. So as far as Apple goes, I’ve heard that there’s some way to do – there’s like a workaround for people that have Apple to check texts. But I have an Android. Have you ever heard of anybody or do you know how to access texts? via android because i tried going through like verizon through the website through the provider that i bought the phone from and i couldn’t find anything to be able to access texting and that and i’m going to throw that out to everybody else listening because i i guess charlie you’re an android user you might know more about this than i would i i honestly mark
SPEAKER 09 :
I have no idea, and as you know, I’m an Apple guy, and some would be mad at me for that. Others, like me, use the platform. I’m always one where it teaches on. I’m not going to criticize anybody one way or the other for the platform that you use. iMessage, to your point, Mark, gives you the ability through online or with another device, iPad, iPad, My laptop, for example, I can get text messages through that way, so I don’t have to have my phone to actually get a text message, and that’s the one beautiful thing that Apple has going for them. I don’t know, and this is something that, again, a lot of you Android users folks, users would have to answer for me. If you had an Android tablet, Mark, as a backup, even an older unit that you just had kicking around, you know, go buy a used one for $30, $40, $50, and I’m not exaggerating when I say you can buy them that cheap because you can, will that still pick up your text messages?
SPEAKER 03 :
I have no idea. I mean, because wouldn’t you have to have the same SIM card or take the SIM card out of your phone and put it into that unit? Because I tried going on my laptop. I tried going through YouTube to try to find hints. I couldn’t find anything. Charlie, do you have any?
SPEAKER 09 :
I’m asking Charlie because he’s an Android user. Do you know of anything? Charlie thought maybe, and this is something to check out, if you’ve got, for example, Samsung phone, if you use a Samsung tablet, could you then do some of what you’re talking about? And again, Mark, you bring up a great point because, hey, I’m not an Android user and I don’t have that answer.
SPEAKER 03 :
So I do have Samsung.
SPEAKER 09 :
Oh, Charlie sent another great idea. Do you happen to save any of your old phones where you could just pop a SIM card into an old phone?
SPEAKER 03 :
Oh, I do keep all my own phones, and that actually didn’t even cross my mind. I actually went to Samsung’s website because it said something about how you could link it up, but I guess you have to do that when you get the phone maybe, and I didn’t have that already set up. It actually had my TVs on there for whatever reason, but that doesn’t help me on the texting side. So, yeah, no, I didn’t think about trying an old phone, and, yeah, I could have – I thought about it a little more, maybe poked around with that, but my particular phone, when you pull the back off, like my older phones, when you pull the back off, it would have kind of an area where you could pop a SIM card out, a memory card, and the battery. Well, this one doesn’t have any of that. that I could find. It’s all embedded.
SPEAKER 09 :
Right, right, yeah, and the newer iPhones now for years have very, well, they’ve always been that way. You’ve never been able to take the battery out of an iPhone. You’ve been able to take the SIM in and out. Now, I will say, Mark, that the later phones now, they’re all SIM-less. They’re all a built-in, quote-unquote, you know, digital SIM, if you would. So even that becomes a little different situation. Now, what you can do for those of you that are Apple users, where if that were to happen to you and you’re not using iMessage like I am, where it’s on multiple devices and so on, you could call your provider and say, hey, I’ve got a new phone. Here’s my IMEI number. My old phone has, you know, bit the dust. I need to re, you know, I need to re-up this one. And they would do that for you as long as you had a backup phone.
SPEAKER 03 :
Right. Yeah. And I didn’t want to have to go back and forth because I had already I already have a place in Greeley that does phone repair. No, no. I’ll put a plug out there. They did a great job. I called them. They ordered the screen. They had it fixed within three days. Nice. So, you know, it was a first world problem.
SPEAKER 09 :
No, well, you know, they are, although this situation that was happening over in Spain and Portugal, they had a huge first world problem, Mark, because when people can’t get on the phone, I had a text message a moment ago from Mickey that said AM radios, AM portable radios over there were selling like hotcakes.
SPEAKER 03 :
Oh, wow. Wow. Yeah, we keep at least half a dozen in the house. And for years, my family has kind of called me old man for it, but whatever. It’s funny.
SPEAKER 09 :
I was going through some stuff last night looking for – long story, but I was looking for a – how do I want to explain this? I had a device where I thought my power supply – had gone bad and so i thought you know i’ve got i say you know when i throw even a device away i’ll i’m one of those guys mark where i keep a tub of of those power supplies and they’re all different as you know i mean they can range anywhere from you know five volts to seven volts to nine volts to 12 volts they come in all sorts of different ends and so on well as it turned out I end up going through my tub of those and find the exact one I needed. It was only a volt or so off of what my old one was, plugged it all in, got what I needed up and running and so on. And so I’m one of those like you where I save a lot of that stuff just for that reason, have backup.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yep, I do. It’s funny. I was going through another box, and I was actually trying to find some fittings of all things. And I’m like, you know, I know I have these fittings, and I normally keep everything – categorized, you know, fittings with fittings, parts with parts, electric with electric. Same thing. I went through and I’m like, you know what? I remember in my mind just a few months ago, I was doing X and, and I think I put these fittings in with a bunch of cables for whatever dumb reason. So I went and looked, and sure enough, I found the box with the cables and had the fittings in there. There you go. And I found cables that I needed. So I was like, oh, great, okay. I’m so glad I’m not fully losing my memory.
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, in my case, when I was going through all of that, I didn’t finish my story, but as I was going through all those things last night, Mark, looking, and I knew they were there, but it was a reminder that I probably have, I don’t know, three or four different battery-operated AM, FM. I’ve got an old sports Walkman, the whole nine yards. I’m going through this tub, and I’m like, well, you know what? I’m hanging on to those. They might come in handy someday.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, the other thing they’re great for is, like, sporting events. Right. And I know you’ve never been to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, but I have several times. And when you go up there, they broadcast the race over on AM Station. So as you’re on the mountain, you can hear, you know, hey, this is what’s going on, this is what’s going on, instead of having, like, a scanner. which of course is all the inside radio and you could do that too but a simple battery powered and and i i brought it up there and i had like a bunch of people standing around me like hey man can we listen to your radio Yeah, sure. Yeah, this is really neat. But, yeah, this will be one year. I won’t be able to make it up there because tickets are like $100 now. But they are going to be televising. I know this is the wrong show, but they are going to be televising, I believe, this race.
SPEAKER 09 :
I read that. No, Mark, you were right. I’m sorry that I hadn’t said that earlier on even my daily programs. I think that’s news. It doesn’t matter if it’s drive radio or not. I had read the same thing. That’s going to be, I think, one of the only or first times I’ve ever done that, right?
SPEAKER 03 :
I believe it’s the first time. So in years past, they’ve been running literally hand-running cables up and down the mountain, and they’ll have sections where they make sure that the cables are not messed with with the spectators. And hopefully not the cars because, man, they are booking up that hill. But this year, I don’t know how they’re doing it, if they’re doing like a fiber optic line or something. But I guess they’re going to have the whole thing televised, which is going to be amazing. Because they did, you know, I think it was last year, you could log in and watch it. And it wasn’t bad. You know, it was not as grainy as you would expect. think of like an older recording or anything like that. But to watch these guys cook up that mountain, I mean, it’s the second oldest race in America other than 8500. It’s amazing technology. Absolutely amazing.
SPEAKER 09 :
Very cool. Very cool. And I did a little bit of browsing as you were – Chatting about Pike’s Peak a moment ago, and Mark, I think you’re correct. I did a little bit of checking when it comes to Android and getting text messages in when your phone dies. And other than swapping the SIM into another device, I don’t think there’s anything out there you can do.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, that’s unfortunate, and it feels very vulnerable, and it’s really brought up a thing. I’ve been talking to my wife, like, what do we do? She worked for herself as a real estate agent. I mean, if you work for yourself, that’s your whole world.
SPEAKER 09 :
Right. Well, and for me, and this is not plugging Apple, everybody can do whatever they want to, and some guys love Android, and that’s fine. Again, I’m not trying to sell or push anything. But for me personally, because of everything I do and my ability to communicate quickly, whether it’s a text message and I don’t have to pick up my phone and grab it and respond and so on, the ability, Mark, for me platform-wise to use multiple devices and do all the same thing literally simultaneously on the Apple side is why I keep using it.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, that might be my next step is just to switch over and bite the bullet, as they say.
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, and again, everybody, you know, everybody can criticize one versus the other. And what I’ve learned over the years, Mark, is everyone has a pro and a con to it. And at the end of the day, you pick your platform and go forward. And, you know, I’ve and by the way, I read all of the different things where people, you know, they did this and they did that. And this guy hates this and this guy hates that. And Again, at the end of the day, it really comes down to what are you used to, and platform-wise, and or, you know, for like your wife, for example, on the business side, how do you get all of these things done simultaneously and never lose contact with anybody on the business side?
SPEAKER 03 :
Oh, yeah. Google’s really figured out a way to mainstream things as far as technology goes. I know I’m taking up some time, but… No, no, you’re fine.
SPEAKER 09 :
This is all great to me. This is stuff that affects everybody, Mark.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, and I hate to age myself, but my daughter is actually – she’s written five books now. She’s 11 years old, and she’s on her fifth book. She’s going to be publishing them herself. And she’s using Google Docs, which I’ve never used before. Oh, that’s great. And then she asked me, hey, can you help proofread this? And I’m like, this is incredible. I mean, I feel so ridiculous that I’ve never used this before.
SPEAKER 09 :
I’ve used it for years. I’ve been using that end of things probably since the, gosh, I want to say probably last 15 years, Mark, pretty easily.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, it’s impressive. If you’ve never tried it and you’re listening… It’s worth it. I mean, even if you use it for something basic, but she was, you know, as I didn’t realize this. So she was logged in. I was logged in. You can see what each other’s doing. Yeah. Yeah. So I’m proofreading and changing her stuff. Right. And then she would approve it and then edit live, like at the exact same time.
SPEAKER 09 :
Basically, you can collaborate back and forth that way. Yeah, I do that with a lot of my coaching clients, Mark. We’ll have a particular document or a spreadsheet or something that maybe they’re like you. They’re wanting me to go through and do some different things for them, make sure we’ve got everything handled, I’s dotted, T’s crossed, and so on. And collectively, we can work on the same spreadsheet, same document, whatever it happens to be at the same time. That’s awesome. And not even be, you know, literally I’m on the phone in one place, and they could be in some cases I’ve got clients on the East Coast. They’re on the East Coast, and I’m here locally in Denver, and we’re doing the same thing at the same time.
SPEAKER 03 :
That’s awesome. That’s really cool. Yep. So I will probably be looking into the iPhone, even though I’ve been an Android guy, and I just – I don’t know why I picked Android. Probably what it was was Fallout from PC versus Mac back in the 1980s when I was in high school and we had these things that looked like shoeboxes. And I’m like, what is this? But I know things have really advanced.
SPEAKER 09 :
Really quick, I’ll just put a plug in, and I’ve said this before, and the only plug that I’ll give Apple is, and even though they’re, by the way, they’re as liberal as a company as anybody, and as woke as any of them out there are, Mark, but by the way, they’re no different than Google or anybody else that’s out there in that space. They’re doing the exact same thing that they’re doing. They’re all equal when it comes to that, with one exception. I will tell you that I believe, and because you’ve seen it over and over again, Apple is very sensitive to their customers’ data and who has access to it, i.e. FBI and others. And they will do everything they possibly can to protect your data from getting into hands that it does not belong in, period. And they are really big on that. And they have fought for your rights and mine when it comes to the feds trying to recover different things on different devices. And that’s probably the other reason why I keep using Apple or even started way back when, is they are very, very big on your personal security, making sure nobody else has access to your stuff.

She said the hotel, the power was going on and off, you know, intermittently. The air conditioning never worked. Oh, and only a few of the elevators were working.

Wow. Yeah, that was a big deal. I was telling Charlie during the break, that’s about one of the only, or maybe I read a couple of different articles when I was out because I try my best not to look at stuff. That one I couldn’t avoid, John, because it was such a big deal.
SPEAKER 12 :
Oh, yeah. The one thing for the previous caller… A lot of times, if it’s going to send you a two-party authentication, if you’re on your computer, it’ll ask you, do you want a text or an email? And he might be able to change it to email to get on until his phone sticks.

You know, you’ve got to be able to access your email if you’re on your computer. But Samsung, you can have a tablet and a phone that’ll sync to each other.

Just like a smartwatch, too, will sync to it. Most Android devices will work that way.

And will it still pick up text messages and so on from one device to the other?

I’m not totally sure, but I know back in the day, I used to be able to log into my Verizon account on my computer and look at my text messages. I don’t know if that’s still around. I’m not with Verizon anymore, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t be.
SPEAKER 09 :
And I am, but I’ve never had to do that, so I’ve never looked into it, John.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, it was years and years ago the last time I did it. But you were talking about crank radios, and sitting in my workshop garage, I have a realistic Radio Shack AM-FM weather band that has a crank on it.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yep.
SPEAKER 12 :
And you know what? It still works, and it works pretty good.
SPEAKER 09 :

And it runs on, I think, three AAA batteries. But the other thing I have, and I don’t know if I told you, I have a Ryobi One tool set, and I have the radio that goes with that. Oh, cool. And it’s AM-FM, but it runs off the same battery.

Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER 12 :
So if you lose power and you’ve got all your batteries charged, the thing would probably last about five days without having it charged.
SPEAKER 08 :
Good point.
SPEAKER 12 :
And the nice thing about it, it’s got a USB-A port. on it where I can connect the charging cord and charge my phone off of it.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, that’s a good idea, too.
SPEAKER 12 :
But the other thing when it comes to phone charging, and I have one for backpacking, is pick up a 20,000 milliamp phone battery. That thing will charge. I know the one I have, it’ll charge my phone, it’ll charge my wife’s phone, and it’ll keep our phone charged for five days without backpacking. And the one I have has a little solar panel on it, and I think it costs $30 on Amazon or something like that, maybe a little more with the tariffs, but not by much. And it’s just a battery pretty much, but it’ll charge my phones and everything else. And that’s the key. If you lose power and you don’t have a generator, if it’s a power outage, A lot of people you’ve seen go out to their cars and plug their phone in, which always would work. But did you see the conspiracy theory that it was a targeted EM pulse?
SPEAKER 09 :
You know what? I have read a lot of different things. I’ve read that. I’ve read where, again, as I was saying earlier, folks are blaming it on alternative energy. There’s some excuses out there that, well, you know, there was a shunt, quote, unquote, and that shut down part of the grid. And then even though it tried to come back up, that failed and blah, blah, blah.
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, in August of 83, I’m sorry, 2003. One switch knocked out the whole Northeast for a 24-hour period, if you’ll remember.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, very true.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, it took out New York City, and this is where people should have learned. The subways were down. They had to be let out by the police with flashlights. The stores had no power, and some people would go in and say, like, I need to buy a bottle of water or whatever. No cash in their pocket, so they couldn’t do that.

Right.

And then the opposite was also some people in the store, well, I don’t know how to make change because they couldn’t use the machine. They didn’t know how to do change back. You know, $250, and I give you a five, and they didn’t know how to make change. Got it. And the other thing is how many people, not our generation, but younger than us, have no cash?
SPEAKER 09 :
Most.
SPEAKER 12 :
In their pocket.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, most.

And hours out, you need to buy something. You can’t use a debit or a credit card.
SPEAKER 09 :
What are you going to do? That’s a great point, and that’s why I think everybody out there, period, I don’t care what age you are, John, should be carrying a certain amount of cash, small denominations as well, ones, fives, tens, twenties. I mean, you really should be carrying probably, I know a lot of people would probably argue with me, but I think you’ve got to have at least $100, if not a couple hundred bucks in denominations along those lines.

Especially if you’re traveling.

Absolutely if you’re traveling.

And then the same thing, you know, you don’t have to use it, but get 50 euros in small or, you know, and just have it in your pocket in case of an emergency like that.

So over, and I’ve been to Europe for years and years, John, your wife would know this. Will they still take a Benjamin over there if need be?

Will they still take an American dollar?

So some of the kids, people on my crew, they went to a restaurant and the restaurant couldn’t take cards. So between U.S. cash, I think maybe they had some euros and some British pounds they were able to pay for.

Yeah, we’re in the car, as you can tell.

Yeah, well, because Charlie was mentioning during the break that things like ATMs and other things along those lines, when the power’s out, they’re not working. Drugs, all that kind of stuff.

Anytime my wife and I travel or we’re traveling, if I’m going, even if it’s just away for the weekend or something, I’ll grab a couple of hundred in cash just to have pocket money. Just in case. Because you never know. And then the other thing You want excellent service in a restaurant, when they come back, when you tip and catch, you get a big smile.

Mark had called or Mark had texted back in and said in his particular situation with his particular bank, it’s either a text or a phone call. And I’m guessing, depending upon your financial institution, might very well be the case. There’s no email option is what Mark was saying. So in that particular scenario, you’ve got to find… Some other method of communicating and I think for and I think this is a we never talked about this on ready radio By the way, I think for a lot of folks, you know, you look at your old cell phone and think well What I’m gonna do with this now in some, you know Particular providers give you the ability at times to trade that phone in and upgrade and do some things along those lines but you know depending upon circumstances you may think about just hanging on to an old phone I do actually I got I think an old iPhone and believe it or not an old Android as well that I just hang on to for reasons like what Mark just mentioned reality is there’s not a lot of value for those old phones and as long as I could get a phone call Which, by the way, most any device, all the way back to where we had flip phones, if you can get a SIM card in them, will take a phone call. So the reality is on the banking end of things, like what Mark was talking about, even being able to retrieve a phone call, listen to a phone call, have somebody talk to you, you could pretty much get whatever you need handled in that manner. And most any old phone that you could slip a SIM card into would allow you to do that. So… Charlie had a great point there. Make sure that if you hang on to any of those older devices, you’ve got the ability to charge them. Some had really unique charging systems for some of the old phones. Some used some micro-USBs, mini-USBs, USB-C. Apple, for the longest time, had their lightning connectors. I mean, there was all sorts of different chargers back in the day. Now, with the A lawsuit that was over in Europe with Apple, almost everything now, whether you’re Android or Apple, uses USB-C to do the charging. So most modern phones in the last several years are using USB-C. But if you’ve got some old things you’re kicking around, hanging on to like we’re talking about, make sure you’ve got the ability to charge those up. Because if it’s dead and you can swap your SIM card over, well, that’s great, but it ain’t going to do you any good if it’s dead. So to Charlie’s point, and this is one of those two folks where what I would do, and I do do this, I actually keep those particular devices in a drawer that’s really accessible where I know I’ve got everything in one place. I’ve got the charger. I’ve got the phone. I’ve got it very easy. In other words, I don’t have to go dig around some – you know box it’s got 500 other things inside of it to go find that phone i keep that readily available for some of you you may want to get a shoe box or one of the plastic storage boxes or something like that go ahead put that on a shelf whatever i mean everybody’s different as far as how you guys store things in my case i’ve just got it in my desk drawer where i sit and do the majority of my business I work from home for the majority of the time unless I’m here. And I’ve got that in my desk drawer, makes it really easy. It’s right at my fingertips. If something were to happen and I needed it, I’ve got it right then and there. I don’t travel with that. I mean, I don’t bring that with me because typically unless I’m going out of town, you know, I’m not that far away. And for those of you listening to when you travel as a pair. You can typically even use the other person’s device if you ever got in a really big pinch and you needed something. Most cell companies, this is something else that I should throw out there. I didn’t know we were going to go down this path, but Mark, thanks for taking us down this path because these are things everybody should know to do. You ought to be able to log into your cell phone provider account. For all of you listening, it’s really important. Now, a lot of you pay your bills and do things along those lines and have that access, but believe it or not, a lot of people hardly ever, if ever, log into their account. You get set up on an auto payment, maybe through a credit card or something along those lines, and you may not ever log back in to your actual cell phone provider account. T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, you just don’t have much reason to log back in, so you don’t. My point is… If you had another device that can access Wi-Fi and you’re in Mark’s position, you could typically log into your account, re-register whatever that old phone is with that SIM card, or if your SIM card’s getting swapped, whatever. Sometimes you’ve got to go online and re-register something online in your account to get that device to work. My point is you can do all of that online without ever having to make a phone call. You’re not on terminal hold with AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Mint, whoever it happens to be. You can do all of that online pretty easily. I know Verizon, for example, gives you that ability where you can literally log into your account, go look at that particular device, change out the IMEI number, which is what that communication – basically the communication number is for that particular either hard – Hard SIM that’s built into the phone like a lot of the new iPhones are, or your digital SIM, I should say, or an actual SIM that would slip in if you need to change something along those lines, you can. Now, one other thing that I always do, and this is something that maybe I’m weird for doing, I save old SIMs as well. Now, I don’t save every old SIM, but I probably still, and this I do carry around with me. I’m not sure why now because my phone doesn’t take a SIM, but I do carry with me a couple of extra SIM cards that are able to be accessed. They’re open. They’re not locked. I could re-register those if I had to. So point being, even if I got into a real pinch and somebody else that I was hanging around with had a SIM, phone with a SIM card, I could literally take one of my SIM cards, go online, go to Verizon, re-register what I need to do there, slip that in somebody else’s phone really quick, make whatever phone call I would need to do or get this particular two-step verification handled like Mark was talking about a moment ago, and off I go. So I do carry that with me for that reason alone to where even if I got in a bind and I needed to borrow somebody else’s phone for a moment, say, hey, let me slip my SIM in really quick so I can make a phone call or get a verification so I can get my passcode and everything else I need to do banking-wise handled, you know, off you go. So lots of ways to do these things. And what I’m saying is I don’t think it’s ever a bad idea to hold on to an old cell phone. and for sure hold on to, if not one or a couple, old SIM cards. At one time, you used to have to buy SIMs. Literally, they’d charge you $8, $9, $10 for a SIM back in the day. There’s a gazillion of them kicking around now. You can pretty much pick up one pretty much anywhere. You probably have some kicking around a desk drawer someplace. Round those up. If you have to tape them to the back of these cell phones we’re talking about keeping stored, And the charger along with it, you know, rubber band all that together or however you want to keep tabs on those things and store that stuff together so that if something like that were to happen to you, like what happened to Mark, you’ve got the ability to get back up and running fairly quickly because, yeah, things happen. You know, I’ve done everything. You know, I’ve… I’ve never had one lost to the dog chewing it up, but I have accidentally jumped into water with your phone in your pocket, and yes, I’ve done stupid things along those lines to where everything at that point then is fried, and no, once it goes, at least the older phones, the new ones are different, but the older ones, when they got wet, you were done. No, a bag of rice isn’t fixing it. Been there, done that back in the day. I get it. Most of the modern phones, Charlie, I think even your new Samsung is probably waterproof now, so they’re a lot different than they used to be along those lines. But even still, you can sometimes, even with the modern, quote-unquote, waterproof devices, if you plug those in – this is another reminder, too, that I should mention. If you’ve been out with your phone and it got wet – don’t plug it in. Even in a rainstorm, don’t plug it in. If you’ve got wireless charging, use that to charge your device up until things are dried out really well because I’ll tell you, if you plug in when things are wet, you can do damage. How do I know that? Voice of experience. Okay, so these are things that over time we all learn through different sets of circumstances. And reality is if your device is wet, make sure that it is fully dried before you go plugging anything into it. And if you need to charge it, use your wireless charging if your device is so equipped, which a lot of devices now for the past, gosh, Charlie, probably 40, Five years or so have been wireless ability to charge that way. And that’s something else, by the way, that you should always have handy. If you don’t use a wireless charger, but you ever got into a bind where your regular cord won’t charge for whatever reason, the port gets damaged, something like that happens. Always have a spare wireless charger kicking around that you could go throw your device on and utilize that way if you have to. So just as a side note, there’s all sorts of ways you can handle those things. A lot of cars have wireless charging in them as well. A lot of the newer cars that give you the ability to charge a wireless phone. So just be thinking ahead. That’s what we do on Ready Radio is try to get you guys to think ahead on what if X, Y, Z were to happen. How do I handle that moving forward? So just something to think about along those lines. All right. I watched a video that Dan sent me the other day. Dan, thank you for all the videos you do send me if you’re listening. I do appreciate it very much. I try to watch every one of them if I can. I don’t watch all of them through and through, but I get the gist of the majority of them and do watch probably 90% of the ones that you send me. And there was an actual video that he sent me the other day that – talked about 10 essential items that this particular person would use for the show alone. In other words, if they give you the ability to bring certain things with you, what would those items be? And this is a person that’s actually been on some of those shows. I thought that was rather interesting as well. And he was talking about some of the different things that happen on the shows and so on, and I found it very interesting. But I’ve got time here really quick to go through what these 10 items are, because I think these 10 items, by the way, are things that you probably would want to keep handy, period. I mean, if these would work for the show alone, where you’re literally out in the wilderness dropped off, and you’ve got to figure out how to survive up to 120 days, whoever survives the longest wins the, what is it, Charlie, a million bucks or something? It’s a pretty big number. A hundred grand, I don’t remember what it is. A hundred grand, a million, I don’t know what it is. I think it’s a million bucks, Charlie. I think it’s what they get. I don’t remember that exactly. It’s a sizable amount. Somebody can correct me on that if I’m wrong. I don’t watch Alone a lot, but… The 10 items. First one, sleeping bag. Yeah, that one’s pretty self-explanatory. You can pretty much, with a good sleeping bag, pretty much weather most any storm, along with some of these other devices I’m going to throw at you, no matter what time of the year it is. So having a good sleeping bag on hand, great idea. A bivy bag, we’ve talked about this one before on this program, one of the different items we talk about keeping with you. And a bivy bag is basically an outer bag for your sleeping bag that makes it waterproof. You know, weatherproof is what I should say. So, in other words, you’ve got a good sleeping bag. You maybe don’t have time to get your shelter all built. It’s getting close to dark, but you still need to get, you know, warm and so on. Reality is that sleeping bag with a bivy bag over the top of it, you could pretty much weather a lot of storm with that, even without a lot of shelter around you. Now, if you have this next item with you, you’ve now got yourself double covered, and that’s a tarp, just a 12 by 12 tarp. Easy to carry. A 12 by 12 tarp will do a lot of different things, not only protect you from the ground, but can protect you from storms overhead. Tarps are so versatile that it’s one of those things that I’m not really sure why, when I go through a lot of these lists of things that you talk about for the essentials that people should have around, I don’t know why tarps aren’t listed more often than they are. To me, that’s like tarps and bungee cords. are like, to me, some of the most essential things you can have. You can literally take either some parachute cord, some bungee cords, a tarp, a sleeping bag, and the next item is, of course, a fire starter. You have some of those things handy, and you’re going to pretty much survive most anything that gets thrown at you within the first 24 to 48 hours to where you can then start building a really good shelter. But fire starter was next on here. And not like fire starter that’s in like a brick form, but the regular old magnesium stick fire starters where you scrape things off, you know, get a spark going, and you’ve got fire and off you go. I know. There’s all sorts of other things you can do. Vaseline, you know, soaked in a, you know, or a cotton ball soaked in Vaseline, blah, blah, blah. Yes, I know there’s all sorts of other ways you can actually, you know, use, you know, things to start a fire with, steel wool and a battery and so on, but this is easy. You can take a fire starter, actually loop it onto your body where it never leaves you. You can even put it on a lanyard-type setup to where once it’s in your pocket, if it were to even come out accidentally, it doesn’t get lost because if you’re out and about and you need fire, that’s the first thing you’re going to turn to, of course. Of course, a cutting tool, knife, machete, something along those lines. This is an interesting one that I thought was really good on his part. A large metal pot for water. And think like old coffee pot, the old type that used to stick on top of the campfire, that type of a metal pot. You can use it to… boil things in you can put all different things inside of it not just water but you can put you know if you’ve killed an animal something along those lines and you’re looking for some food you know make some stew whatever that large metal pot makes it really easy to put water in and make something out of when it’s all said and done a sewing kit this one that’s another one i thought yeah great idea having a small sewing kit which you can pick up at probably the dollar store You can use that to fix all sorts of things from tears in your clothing to something that might happen in your sleeping bag to on and on we go. So a sewing kit is a good one. This is the need if you’re looking at, okay, how do I collect food items? In other words, how am I going to survive an extended period of time? What do I need to capture or kill said animals? Bow and arrow. And if you’re not proficient at it, in most cases, I know there’s some HOAs that probably frown on you shooting your bow and arrow in the backyard, but for most people… You can do archery pretty easily in your basement, your backyard, all sorts of ways to do that. And trust me, there’s lots of videos on how to make backstops and so on. If you want to know how to do that, just go look it up. And, yes, you can get pretty proficient with a bow and arrow, and you would be surprised how many things you could actually take down with one. Key with a bow and arrow, patience. patience fishing equipment that’s the other one that he had on his list which i thought was a great idea as well a line and a rod and of course a multi-tool to go along with that you can do all sorts of things with fishing equipment including making nets and things like that that would aid you and also catching fish and things along those lines if you find yourself out to where you’d need to do some of that and then last but not least is the one thing that he said that he should he would take with him anytime he would go anywhere is salt plain old salt. Why? Because your body needs it. It helps you retain water, which you’re going to be, you know, you’re going to be expelling a lot of when you’re working and doing things. And it’s just naturally also gives you flavor to food that you would be cooking that you wouldn’t get otherwise, making you actually eat more of said food, which you’re going to need at that point in time as well.
