In this episode, Lee Elsie tackles the massively debated topics from education to migration, while sharing personal experiences commuting to the Big Apple. Listen in as Elsie interviews Judge John Nazaro on the constitutionality of deporting immigrants, and discusses the implications of Trump’s legal battles. The episode also touches on the significant decline in educational competency in America, with a thought-provoking discussion provoking listeners to rethink our national education strategies.
SPEAKER 08 :
He’s the happy conservative warrior. From the Relief Factor studios, sitting in for Mike today, here’s Lee Elsie.
SPEAKER 03 :
All right, here we go. In the Big Apple, ladies and gentlemen. My name is, in fact, Lee Elsie. This is the Mike Gallagher Show. You can call in. Love to hear from you across the entire country. 1-800-655-MIKE. That’s 800-655-6453 in the state of the art. This is a state of the art Relief Factor Studios. Once again, I’ve done this for Mike a number of times in the past, but I did get a chance today to get… the opportunity to sit here in this amazing studio right here in New York City. I took the train in like I did a million times in the past when I was trying to be an actor. So here I am again, and I can’t thank everybody enough, but start with Mike. He’s the nicest guy in the business, so a shout-out to Mike Gallagher first and foremost, Eric and the rest of the crew behind the scenes, making it all go without them. it would be a disaster for sure. But I’d love to hear from you. If you’re on anywhere, you can go on MikeOnline.com and listen up that way and watch up that way. But I did want to start today with this feeling of… Exhilaration, a feeling of relief, a sense of a new chapter. This is the last day of this colossal disaster known as the Biden administration. Technically, not really the last day, but the last day of this year. 20 more days. I mean, 20 days and we finally get a chance to turn the page again. on this failed leadership. Joe Biden and his entire crew have led us down a road to ruin. And there’s no question that the country got a chance to take a step back, take a deep breath, And say, yeah, I think we can now do this. I think we can move forward and we can change the dynamic again. Biden gave us instability. He gave us a disastrous economy, mismanagement. The world is essentially in chaos. It’s one of the darkest chapters in the history of this country. And he is going to go down as the worst president in the history of this country. He’s essentially a mob boss, a mafia mob boss. And now Donald Trump gets a second shot. Right. Wiser battle tested. Ready to get in there, I think, with the crew that he wants to surround himself with, which is vitally important. Something he did not do the first go around. So Trump is going to I know he’s going to hit the ground running. But what we leave in the wake is this. Feeling of almost an un-American feeling, right? Almost as if you were ashamed to show your patriotic pride. And I do believe that we’re going to get that back. I’m sure of it. The global chaos under Biden, it has been a disaster. Think about it. We’ve got a full-out war in Ukraine. We’ve got Israel and Gaza. This whole situation could have been averted. Here in this country, and we’re going to hear from Tom Holman a little bit later on some of the things with him, but here in this country, the immigration situation has been absolutely destructive. It’s been a disaster. In fact, when you think about it, the last four years, I mean, a hundred years from now, scholars will look back at these four years and study it and say, this is unbelievable what happened. You literally have got the most crooked person in history to run this country. And all of his minions, all of his family members, I’m the doll. And you could see him parting his son. We all knew he was going to do it. But who is going to be pardoned next? What sort of insulation is he going to give himself as he walks out the door? Again, 100 years from now, they’re going to look back at this time in the history of this country and say, yeah, this is the most corrupt president we have ever had. Somewhere along the line, they’ll dig up all of the nastiness, all of the money trails. Not that they already haven’t done that, but they’ll undo it and they’ll show the American public at that time, this is what happened. This disaster actually happened. So Trump restores, he restores stability. He restores that to this country. And you know what’s funny, too, about this round with Trump? You don’t get this feeling from the progressive left that the sky is falling. They’ve accepted it. They know that he is not going to push the button and end us because that was probably a fear the first go around. No, he is going to stabilize the country. And it’s a renewed hope. There’s a renewed sense of patriotism. I can feel it. The flag will be flying higher. You know, you think about unity. This is the one thing that Biden kept preaching, unity, unity, unity. Never was able to deliver that because every speech he ever gave was divisive. But there’s no question that everybody has a sense now. It’s a different sense. It’s a different feeling. There’s momentum here. And, you know, Trump comes in and I feel as though him and the Doge and all of that surrounding that with Vivek and the way that they can trim down this colossal, massive, bloated budget that we’re witnessing. If we can get that thing under control, we can actually, you know, we can actually get back to a place where we all want to be. And, you know, I tell you. There’s got to be a call to action from all of us, too. We can’t just sit on the sidelines. We can’t just sit on our hands. We have to be proactive, more proactive. than reactive. And I think that is actually a part of the equation with Trump as well. I think that he makes people want to be part of this. And again, as I’ve said before, the symbols of this country, the flag, American pride, patriotism, all of that, there’s going to be a resurgence of that, a moral foundation that we need to return to. I mean… Every time Biden got up and I can go down a laundry list and I don’t want to spend all three hours talking about the negativeness of Biden. I want to do a lot of different things. But I know chapter and verse could go one after another, whether it’s Afghanistan, whether it’s the border, whether it’s the economy, whether it’s inflation. Do it over and over and over again. But I don’t necessarily want to do that. I want to show that. I think Americans have turned the corner. And there’s optimism. And we should celebrate the exceptionalism of each one of us. I came in here today via the train. I live in Connecticut. So it takes me a train to get here, then a subway ride. And, you know, we’ve all heard the horror stories of the subways and the trains and all of that. But you could see. I mean, these are people who go to work every day. They get up. I mean, I was on the train today by like 5 o’clock in the morning. I mean, I’ve done this trip a million times in my life. I grew up in Connecticut, come to New York all the time. But you see people who are just crazy. Battling it out every single day, trying to make a way in this world. And I swear I can feel that there’s a different sense of optimism. In their eyes, in their presence. I got that today when I was on the subway. Honest, I know the New York subway is chaotic. In fact, today, all the headlines are saying New York is not the place to be, right? So there’s terror watch alerts, there’s cops on every single corner, there’s tons of cops in the subway, which is a good thing in particular because today is New Year’s Eve, last day of 2024. But I honestly believe that there’s a sense of true optimism in this country right now, and I think that’s 100% because we’ve got a turning of the page and a changing from… poor, callous, destructive, manipulative leadership into something that really is more nationalistic. I also want to talk about that, too, because I think there’s a thought that nationalism is a bad thing. And I do want to talk about that as we move forward throughout the show today. Once again, my name is Lee Elsie. If you want to email me, you can do that. It’s L-E-E-E-L-C-I radio at gmail.com. Send it my way. I’d love to hear from you, but I would love to hear from you guys. If you want to call in, we can open those phones up and take some calls. I do have a guest coming up at the bottom of the hour. We’re going to talk about the constitutionality of Tom Holman and deporting folks. So keep it right here. My name is Lee Elsie filling in for the one and only Mike Gallagher right here on The Mike Gallagher Show.
SPEAKER 07 :
I have something I know won’t dissolve.

SPEAKER 08 :
All right, welcome back.
SPEAKER 03 :
It’s the Mike Gallagher Show. You can call in at 800-655-MIKE, mikeonline.com. And before we get to, if we can squeeze in a call, we will. At the bottom of the hour, I will be talking with Judge John Nazaro about the constitutionality of Tom Homan and deporting 12 million illegal aliens. But before we get there, Biden. The 37 death row inmates, Dan Muser, Republican, South Carolina, on him commuting those 37 death row inmates.
SPEAKER 11 :
I think it’s outrageous. You know, it’s senseless. But most of what they’ve done for the last four years is senseless. I mean, where does this ideology come from? Why do they leave the borders open? Why do one third of the women that come across be getting raped? Why do they, which is true. Why? Do they allow all the drugs? And why did they let the cartels become millionaires and billionaires and destroy much of the Mexico government? Why did they destroy American energy? It’s impossible to understand their ideology. because it backfires all the time. Look what they did in Afghanistan. I mean, very little that the Biden administration has done makes any sense. It’s really upside down and backwards, and we’re going to turn it upside right, and the American people are going to appreciate the benefits. Their ideology is awful. It’s an unbelievable level of liberalism. I mean, we’ve been giving billions of dollars to Afghanistan, for crying out loud, since the Taliban took over. Meanwhile, we have American hostages over there not accused of a crime. I mean, this administration needs to go ASAP.
SPEAKER 03 :
It’s one of two things. It’s either complete incompetence or it’s nefarious. It’s one or the other. Because, you know, you can’t rise to this level of power and not be… Not be at least somewhat competent of what you’re doing. I mean, it’s simple. In my mind, either you’re stupid or you’re doing it on purpose.
SPEAKER 1 :
Period.
SPEAKER 03 :
End of story. We have time for one call. You want to grab Tom in Sarasota, Florida?
SPEAKER 12 :
Tom, what’s on your mind today? Hey, Happy New Year. I’ll tell you, the optimism that you’re talking about, the enthusiasm. I mean, it doesn’t matter what side you stand on. This is unconscionable what’s happened the last four years, even with the passing of Jimmy Carter. All of a sudden, I look at him differently, like he actually had an America that fundamentally was sound in so many areas, like you’re talking about ideology and such. I cannot believe what we’ve just been through. But I think the onus is on Trump, Musk, and Ramaswamy. They got to turn this federal government sloth upside down, get under the carpet, expose everything. And that’s going to expose a Republican Party. By and large, it went bad, too. I mean, these people are standing in our House and Senate, and they’re permitting so much mess. You know, and I want to be friends with Putin. I want to be friends with Xi again. I think economically, if you look at Europe, Europe has peace because of economics. They might bitch and moan like old ladies, Lee, but they got peace.
SPEAKER 03 :
Right.
SPEAKER 12 :
And it’s because of economics.
SPEAKER 03 :
I like what you said, too.
SPEAKER 12 :
You got to be.
SPEAKER 03 :
No, I just want to jump in. I like what you said about Carter. And we can we can disagree with Carter’s philosophy and the way he ran the country. But you know what? He wasn’t out to bring us down. I truly believe that Biden wanted to destroy this country. And he came close to doing a second term. He would have did it. So, listen, have a great New Year, Tom. I appreciate you calling in from down there in Tampa. And, again, maybe later on, although I know it’s very cliche, maybe we’ll do resolutions. I don’t get resolutions. I mean, I’m almost perfect, so I don’t do resolutions. But if you want to call in, it’s 800-655-MIKE. And, like, I do want to get to a couple other things. I want to get to honesty. I want to get to truthfulness and how important that is. I also want to talk about education before my time is up today and how important that is. There’s a story in Connecticut, and I bring it up because it’s my home state. where there’s a young lady who was accepted to UConn, okay? Accepted to UConn. She graduated with honors, guys, and she can’t read. She cannot read. This is a story that blew up. She’s suing the state of Connecticut because of it. But I want to go down a laundry list. I have a bunch of numbers, and we’ll do that later on. about the education system. And that’s something else Trump has to attack. And as Mark said, the last caller, Trump does need to hit the ground running. It’s very important that there’s not a slow start here for Donald Trump. All right. My name again is Lee Elsie filling in for the one and only Mike Gallagher, who I think has been missing for like seven, eight weeks. Is that something that’s not right now? I think he’s going back Thursday. So keep it right here. Don’t go anywhere. You’re listening to The Mike Gallagher Show.
SPEAKER 07 :
To bring some loving here today. Father, Father. We don’t need to escalate. You see.
SPEAKER 02 :

And again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for supporting our Prison Fellowship Angel Tree campaign. See you Thursday, and Happy New Year.
SPEAKER 03 :
All right, back here we are. And thank you, Mike, as always. Mike’s the nicest. I’ve been doing this business for a long time. He’s the nicest guy in it. All right, joining me right now is a retired Connecticut Superior Court judge. And we call him the truth teller. It’s John Nazaro. Judge, good morning. How are you, sir? Good morning.
SPEAKER 06 :
So glad to be here with you this morning.
SPEAKER 03 :
Listen, I want to cover a couple of things, and there’s nobody better out there to do that than you. And we’ve talked about this a couple of times on my morning show, but I want to bring it to everybody across the country. And I just want to start with the constitutionality of the deportation of 12 million people. Now, this is what Trump says he’s going to do. Homan is on board with this. But some of these states and some of these governors, some of these mayors and some of these sanctuary cities don’t want to do it, Judge. So how does that work?
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, this is gonna be a big ask because I don’t think the federal government has the infrastructure. They don’t have the judges that are necessary, the lawyers that are necessary. There are thousands and thousands of cases. What we’ve seen under the Biden administration and even under the Obama administration was a policy of non-enforcement. So now if we’re gonna call in millions of cases Just think about the logistics. I know that each attorney with ICE, Homeland Security, has approximately 6,000 cases. And that’s a lot of cases. And that means when they get a continuance… They’re continuing them out a couple of years. So what do we know? The Constitution protects naturalized citizens. So if you were born here on terra firma, that’s considered the United States of America, arguably you cannot deport that person. That person has inalienable rights. On the other hand, if you’re a foreign born individual, a resident alien who there exists a final order of deportation, you got a serious problem. And there are folks who have that order. But ICE has not come to get them. And I think that’s what the president will be focusing on.
SPEAKER 03 :
Talk to me about, though, the individual, let’s say, obstacles that are in the way, because some of these states, Connecticut’s one, California’s one, New York maybe not so much in the city anymore because they’ve seen the error of their ways, Judge. But if they say, you can’t come and get these folks, how does Holman and the crew handle that?
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, this is a problem and it exists in the blue states. Like you said, a lack of cooperation in our state of Connecticut. The chief justice and indeed the governor and other states have indicated they will not cooperate. It’s an impediment. It doesn’t mean that ICE can’t do their job, but you have a confrontation. And there have been situations where you have ICE agents with their Kevlar vests literally waiting outside the state courthouses, waiting to legitimately take a person into custody. So states will not cooperate, can’t go into the courthouse, arguably. And we don’t want a constitutional confrontation, an 11th Amendment issue, conflict between states’ rights versus the federal government. The federal government has a right to execute its policy. And I think under President Trump, he’s made it clear he’s going to endeavor to do that.
SPEAKER 03 :
OK, but what happens? Just give me a scenario, if you can. And we’re talking to Judge Nazaro, a Superior Court judge in Connecticut. And what happens if We’ll continue to use Connecticut as an example. Let’s say Lamont says, no, we’re not going to allow ICE to do this. Can Homan come and charge these people with obstruction of justice? He actually said the word treason a couple of times.
SPEAKER 06 :
How does that work? I mean, it could happen in the theoretical. Will it? It’s not a good thing. And again, practically, how do you handle that? And you’re going to have a legitimate basis of the government denying the federal government, state government denying federal authorities to come in. And this has happened and it’s been frustrating. I know there have been situations anecdotally where you have a person with a final order of deportation. ISIS requested the state to hold that person. They go into state court and then they’re released into the community. And the state snubs its nose at the federal government. It’s happening all the time. But I’ll bet that there will be legislative consequences. President Trump will push the congressman to indicate penalties, denying federal relief for those states who do not cooperate. It’s the same concept with not cooperating with sanctuary cities or states. And so how far do we want to push the issue? How much resources do we want to devote to it? That’s yet to be seen.
SPEAKER 03 :
Judge John Nazaro is with us on the Mike Gallagher show. And we always appreciate him coming on. He’s a great guest on my morning show, bringing him on again to the national stage so everybody else can get a look at him. We have similar hairstyles. I don’t think that I think that was an accident. Let me ask you, Barbara. Yeah. Donald Trump, he’s dominated the legal landscape in 2024, and there’s a lot there. What do you see happening to him, for him, as far as 2025 comes rolling around?
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, it’s fascinating because one of the big things, and we’ve talked about this, is he has conservative justices controlling the United States Supreme Court. And that means that they’re going to be sympathetic to the concept of a president exercising authority. They’ve already ruled in this past case, probably the most significant case, about the president is immune from criminal prosecution for those acts which could be considered in an official capacity. That doesn’t mean he’s going to escape justice in the civil arena. Just yesterday, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the verdict involving Gene Carroll, and he was ordered to pay $5 million by a jury, and that apparently is going to stand. The president’s going to challenge that, and it’s going to probably go to the United States Supreme Court. These are questions that have never been dealt with before. We saw for the first time a former president indicted and convicted on felony offenses. And I don’t think that the U.S. attorneys will back down those that survive. And you can rest assured every Democratic, every left leaning U.S. attorney, if you can find one, they’re going to be asked to tender their resignations and there’s going to be a huge policy shift. So Donald Trump is going to push the envelope. We know that he’s done it before. Past behavior is an indication of future performance.
SPEAKER 03 :
So this case that he just You know, they decided against them and technically lost. From what I heard, and please correct me if I’m wrong, she just needed to prove that it might have happened? Does that sound right?
SPEAKER 06 :
You know what? Actually, the civil standard in most states and in this particular jurisdiction is proof by a fair preponderance. Did it probably? Probably more probable than not. OK, 50 percent, 51 percent. It’s not proof beyond a reasonable doubt. And this was a civil judgment. And the law is that a former president is not immune from a civil judgment. Former presidents such as William Clinton, you might remember, was ordered to sit for a deposition in a sexual misconduct type of claim. So the verdict stands, and that’s the ruling of the Second Circuit Court of Opinions out of New York. And so we’ll see. He will challenge it. I’m sure he will attempt to have the United States Supreme Court review it. With a majority of conservative justices, they may take it, case of first impression.
SPEAKER 03 :
How about in the rest of these felonies, supposedly, that he has been convicted of? What happens with those?
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, you know, Jack Smith saw fit to abandon his quest and arguably the felony convictions. These are not going to stand. And we have some saber rattling that maybe the charges will be brought in the future. It’s clear a president cannot be convicted of crime during his time in office. So that’s the question. What happens when he gets out? And there’s so many different policy considerations. Do they want to pursue it? The state courts, the president is not protected in the state courts. Do we want the states going forward with these prosecutions? Clearly, for the next four years, assuming President Trump completes the term, he’s untouchable. But we’ll see what happens after. And again, he’ll keep pushing it. His lawyers will keep pushing it. They were successful in a related situation with CNN and George Stephanopoulos. They exacted $16 million, if I recall, $15 million plus a million for counsel fees for the libelous action filed against CNN. That was very interesting. I know Mr. Stephanopoulos reportedly was not too happy about that result.
SPEAKER 03 :
Circle back to the pardons. Biden seems to pardon another hundred people every single day. And, you know, another round, another round, another round. And we’re all sort of waiting for him to pre pardon his family members. What do you think is going to happen here in 2025? Well, it’s.
SPEAKER 06 :
It’s tough. And as they said, when they gave me the robe, they gave me a robe as a judge, but not a crystal ball. But I will say this. I think that he will exercise that power to the nth degree. I wasn’t at all surprised at the pardoning of his son, even though he said he would not. Some thought that maybe that extended meeting with President Trump was to hatch a deal that President Trump would pardon his son. No. I think we can anticipate family members being pardoned. This is an exercise in the Constitution. It’s not liked by many scholars because it is basically unfettered. And let’s remember that President Trump exercised the pardon power as well with Paul Manafort and others. And General Smith in Washington, this is a privilege of the president granted in the Constitution. A lot of people don’t like it. And I expect President Biden will exercise it fully for all his friends and family members.
SPEAKER 03 :
If you could explain to everybody across the country. So now there is a caveat, a hiccup in this is that if he’s called to testify, if Hunter now is called to testify, he has to testify now, right? He can’t just plead the fifth on this, right?
SPEAKER 06 :
I think arguably that is correct because there is no criminal exposure. Having been granted this blanket pardon for a 10-year period, one cannot invoke the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. On the other hand, I think he could use the advice of counsel defense that he may unknowingly say something that could expose him to criminality on the state or federal level. So he might invoke the Fifth. You might see a contempt charge brought. And once again, how far are we going to test these boundaries?
SPEAKER 03 :
All right. Let me ask you one more. It’s a heavy one, though. These states now there’s a battle with abortion and throwing it back to the states. Clearly, constitutionally, I mean, at least seems like to me that it made the most sense in your world. How do you see that?
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, you know, I don’t think Congress is going to monkey with it anytime soon. And the Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe versus Wade, it’s now up to states. I don’t see Congress weighing in. I don’t think the courts are going to weigh in. There’s no particular case that’s percolating to the United States Supreme Court. There’s so many issues. And I think arguably… The border and the economy drove this vote in the election. Right. And those there are many one issue candidates, whether it’s abortion, whether it’s guns. And although these are legitimate issues, everybody’s concerned about it. I think there’s a lot of other things going on, not the least of which now are these the conflict in the Ukraine, the conflict in the Middle East. There’s a lot on the table for Congress to deal with.
SPEAKER 03 :
All right, I lied. I got one more quick one for you. If you see something big, do you see something big legally coming up on the horizon, something that the Supreme Court will have to jump in on and make a decision on?
SPEAKER 06 :
The Supreme Court moving away, pivoting from President Trump for a moment, this AI, this AI and TikTok in particular. There is an order by Congress banning TikTok. It’s supposed to go into effect January 19th. The U.S. Supreme Court has fast-tracked this issue and will be dealing with it on January 10th. And this is interesting. They’ve been ordered to divest to a U.S. entity. We have a social platform, First Amendment issues, but we’ve also got the intertangling of a government. The Chinese government is involved with this platform, and we all know they’re mining information. This is not conspiracy theorist stuff. This is what’s going on. So you have a clash. You have a clash of the national interest. You have the First Amendment rights of a platform. Where does it go? The Supreme Court will weigh in on January 10th.
SPEAKER 03 :
Judge John Nazaro, a former, again, retired, once a judge, always a judge, retired Supreme Court justice in Connecticut.
SPEAKER 01 :
What did I say? Supreme Court?
SPEAKER 03 :
Superior. All right. I want to give you a promotion. What can I tell you? You deserve one. Thank you, brother. I appreciate you coming on today. Judge John Nazaro. All right. You’re listening to The Mike Gallagher Show. We’ll take a short break. We’ll come right back. Stick around, everybody.

SPEAKER 03 :
Best in the business. There he is, Mike Gallagher, 1-800-655-MIKE. A reminder, if you guys want to call in, I do want to change gears a little bit. And I don’t have this committed to memory, but I want to just read a couple things, if you don’t mind, because it’s about one of the most important topics that we can possibly cover. And I’d love to hear from teachers if you’re out there during this next break. So 800-655-MIKE. A former student. is suing the Hartford Public School system because she did not get the services she needed to address her deficiencies. This student was, I guess, had kindergarten, first grade reading level in the sixth grade and was continuously promoted to the next grade. She then graduated with honors, honors from high school, even though she is technically illiterate. She applied to the University of Connecticut. She was accepted. Failure on all accounts. Now, in the 80s, the U.S. ranked among the top in global literacy. However, disparities in education funding began to grow. This is the 80s. So we were at the top of the heap in the 80s. In the 90s, focus shifted to standardized testing, goals 2,000, but reading and math scores stagnated, particularly among lower-income students. 2,000 came along. Despite No Child Left Behind, U.S. students ranked 25th in math and 21st in science globally by the decade’s end. 2010 reading and math scores on the National Assessment Education Progress, NAEP, showed no significant improvement with declines noted as 2015 and 2019. And finally, in the 2020s, the pandemic disruptions led to historic drops in test scores with the NAEP reporting the largest declines in reading and math proficiencies since it began. In 2023, nearly 25% of high school graduates were found to be functionally illiterate. 2023, listen to that again. In 2023, 25% of high school graduates were found to be functionally illiterate, unable to read or unable to write at a basic level. One in four. Why? Here’s the reason. Schools now focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, right? They focus on sexual education, gender ideology, partisan topics, throwing politics into just about every single aspect of it. Nobody focuses in on what you really have to do. And now we live, by the way, in a time where artificial intelligence, it’s here. It’s not going anywhere. It’s here to stay. And the power behind AI. is it’s actually a magical thing, believe it or not. And I say that in a very trepidatious way because AI actually can, I mean, it’s going to dumb down even further these kids. I thought about this. I said, okay, so you get something that opens up the entire world for you. You can just type into AI, find me X, Y, and Z, and bang, it finds everything you could want in a second. But you had gone through no work to get there. When we were kids, and again, I know the old when we were kids kind of scenario is always sort of like, like I said, cliché. But the truth is we had to go out and actually dig for information. We had to find stuff out. We had to read stuff. And we sort of kept things. How can you be a high school student and graduate and can’t read? How could 25% of the high school graduates not be able to read? So, yeah, Trump. And I know I tried to get Linda McMahon to come on the show today, who is going to be in charge supposedly of dismantling the Department of Education. She wouldn’t come on. But it’s time to make America smart again. MAGA turned into something maybe like a NASA outcry. But make America smart again. Where are my teachers? Why is this happening? Why are there so many kids that can’t read or can’t write when they have all of these artificial intelligence tools at their fingertips? I don’t understand that. And somebody needs to explain that to me. I know kids get left behind. I know there are different speeds that kids learn at. But there’s no excuse. You know, you’re not doing the kid any service. If you say, okay, sure, go on, go on, go on. What happens when they get to be this point? Like this woman, this high school senior who graduated and then got accepted supposedly to a good school, UConn. She gets in. She can’t read. So who’s the loser? She’s the loser. We’re all the loser in that case. All right. I just wanted to throw that out there. We’ll grab a couple of calls. We’ll go to Connecticut, where Leo is on. Leo, you are a teacher. What’s on your mind? Why are kids unable to read when they graduate high school?
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, you kind of hit the nail on the head. These high-stakes tests, performance tests, And it becomes a check-the-box scenario. Schools and school districts are under the gun because of the federal government and their expectations. So it’s the analogy I would use is, you know, you’re trying to climb over a fence and you can’t make it, so I push you over the top, and they check that off as, okay, VLC made it.
SPEAKER 1 :
Right.
SPEAKER 09 :
And that happens more often than not. And it’s unfortunate. And we’ve gotten away from… the basics. We’ve got all these avant-garde, you know, psychology and this and that. We need to go back to the old reading, writing, arithmetic, and science and get the basics. I find that a lot of the kids that I have as freshmen, they don’t know the metric side of a ruler from the English side of the ruler. And, you know, it’s important. It’s the system.
SPEAKER 03 :
Leo, is a teacher left alone if the kids just pass? If they just keep passing these kids alone, you know, there’s no waves, no mess for the teacher themselves. Is that part of the equation too?
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, I think so. And unfortunately, these teachers unions are like a dog, a pit bull with no teeth in it. You know, they throw these teachers under the bus the minute there’s any kind of pushback. And it’s unfortunate. You know?
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, Leo, listen, I thank you for checking in. I got a million to get to, but I appreciate your call and your insight from the great state of, of, well, I was going to say, I was going to make some joke, but I’m not going to, I’m going to keep it on the up and up. Let’s go to Columbus, Ohio, where Catherine is waiting. Catherine’s also a teacher. Am I wrong on any of this stuff? Catherine?
SPEAKER 01 :
No, you’re not. Um, I taught, um, high school English 20 years ago, and one of the things that I noticed is their disconnect from English literature. The kids? Yeah, the children are disconnected from it. Sometimes it’s because many of my students were, I was teaching in Los Angeles, so many of my students were from another country, but still, they needed to understand English literature to write, And it’s really important in English literature that the children have children’s literature as well, like Hansel and Gretel and, you know, the three bears and all of that. And my students didn’t have that. So what I did was I took out some time and I read those things to them or they read them. And I had them have a journal every day so that they had a practice of writing every day. And I really noticed that compared to my education, And their education, they had gaping holes in literature. And there was this trend of saying that, you know, English literature was kind of white supremacy, and they were trying to incorporate other types of literature. But it wasn’t working because it’s not English literature. So that’s what I did. And my students became very engaged and very interested. And that’s what you have to do.
SPEAKER 03 :
You’re not a teacher anymore, though? You’re not a teacher?
SPEAKER 01 :
No, I’m retired, and I work as an assistant teacher.
SPEAKER 03 :
I’m curious. Do they assign – like how many books would they assign to a junior in high school now to read during the course of a year? I remember we had to read probably half a dozen at least, right, when I was a kid. So do they even do that?
SPEAKER 01 :
They do, but a lot of the literature was irrelevant, and they didn’t really – address, you know, the enhancing the child’s perception of literature or their involvement in it. And and then, you know, the question would always come up like, like, what does this have to do with us? You know, that was their focus. Like everything has to do with us. And I’m thinking and I’m saying, you know, this isn’t Disneyland, you know, and I’m not your mommy. You’re here to learn something outside of. What you’re used to, you know, you need to learn something new and you need to expand your cognitive, you know, skills. And that was the thing is overcoming their self-centeredness. Now, kids can be very self-centered anyway. Sure. especially I saw a lot of it 20 years ago and how they were just pushing the kids along and just trying to make them happy and trying to really education. This isn’t education anymore. It’s just not.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, Catherine, thank you for that. I listen. Great call. Appreciate that very much. I want to grab one more before we take a break, but she made an interesting point, which is how much is the, The decline right now in the school system is a result of a lot of non-English speaking kids in class that have to be catered to. Let’s go to Mitch in Atlanta, Georgia. Mitch, you are a teacher as well?
SPEAKER 13 :
No, Mike Hourly. I worked as a grief counselor and did some work with the Educational Foundation to revamp some of the curriculum in Georgia. But I just wanted to point out that school was intended or came along in the mid-1800s Because we wanted to migrate a workforce, an agricultural workforce, into the factories. We’ve never retooled that mindset. We’re still trying to create factory workers in Googles and Ford, and we forgot that individuals have to have an emotional attachment to their education so they’ll want to study it. We’ve still got an agricultural sector. We’ve got a small business or entrepreneurial sector, and we’re not teaching that. So everybody’s being crammed into a box, and it goes to your first subject about freedom of speech. And, you know, you’ve got to have the maturity to let things go. I mean, we’re just creating drones for Google, and we’re not developing their self-esteem. And there’s a lot of emotional problems, but the educational system is not teaching them how to take care of themselves.
SPEAKER 03 :
Do magnet schools, in your mind, do magnet schools, would that be a better way to teach these kids, give them an opportunity to sort of flourish in what they love?
SPEAKER 13 :
Individuality, just like with food, not everybody’s going to eat the same thing. It’s the same way with education. You have to offer a well-rounded post-secondary. You’ve got to give them agricultural. You’ve got to give them mentorship. We just have to expand the boundaries in order to meet the individual needs. We’re just cramming every, you know, we’re taking square pegs and pounding them into round holes. and they’re just not able to take care of themselves. They hate my work. I’m home at night.
SPEAKER 03 :
No, I get it, Mitch. I think you’re onto something. That’s sort of why I thought maybe a magnet school, because at least that directs kids in an interest level. And, you know, also these trade schools, some of these trade schools are amazing, too, for kids to get involved with those as well. All right, so we’ve obviously struck a chord with this, so we’re going to come back and we’ll talk a little bit more about education. So please don’t go anywhere. My name is Lee Elsie, and I am filling in for the one. And only Mike Gallagher.
SPEAKER 05 :
Oh, my love. I posted it. Like a precious stone in front of her.

SPEAKER 10 :
You don’t run a daycare. You run a business. So why use high-priced recruitment agencies who charge you up to 40% of an employee’s first year salary? So they’re focused on getting you the costly talent, not the best fit. Which means you get more of this.
SPEAKER 04 :
What’s your policy on paying employees to attend protests? I demand eight weeks of vacation. I need at least 12 weeks of paid vacation. I’m going to need a lot of mental health days. Do you have a game room? My pronouns are Zs and Zs.
