Charlotte 49ers hire ex-Cincinnati coach Wes Miller as men’s basketball coach

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte^ also known as UNC Charlotte^ is a public research university located in Charlotte^ North Carolina. July 13^ 2018 - Charlotte^ North Carolina^ USA

The Charlotte 49ers has turned to a familiar name in regional basketball circles, hiring Wes Miller as its new head men’s basketball coach on a five-year deal. The move comes just days after the program parted ways with Aaron Fearne, signaling a fresh start under new athletic director Kevin White.

White said in a statement that “Wes Miller is a proven leader with a deep understanding of the game and strong ties to basketball in our state. Throughout this process, what stood out most was his passion, competitive energy, and clear vision for building a championship culture here at Charlotte.”

Miller brings extensive head coaching experience, having spent the past 15 years leading programs at UNC Greensboro and Cincinnati. He owns a 285-209 overall record, highlighted by seven 20-win seasons and eight postseason appearances. Despite steady results, his tenure at Cincinnati ended earlier this month after five seasons without an NCAA tournament berth, including multiple near-misses.

Before his time with the Bearcats, Miller built UNC Greensboro into a consistent winner. Over a decade, he compiled a 185-135 record and emerged as one of the top mid-major coaches in the country. His final five seasons were particularly dominant, producing a 125-43 mark, three Southern Conference regular-season titles, two NCAA tournament appearances, and an average of 25 wins per year. He also earned SoCon Coach of the Year honors twice and guided the program to its first postseason victory.

As a player, Miller’s roots run deep in North Carolina. After beginning his college career at James Madison, he transferred to North Carolina, where he played under Roy Williams and was part of the Tar Heels’ 2005 national championship team. He later served as a team captain and helped lead UNC to an Elite Eight run.

Miller said in a statement: “I’m incredibly honored to lead the Charlotte Basketball program. This is a university with tremendous momentum, a passionate city behind it, and deep basketball roots in the state of North Carolina. From the moment I began talking with Kevin White and Chancellor Gaber, it was clear there is a shared vision to build a program defined by toughness, passion, and relentless energy. We’re going to pour everything we have into developing our student-athletes, competing at the highest level, and building a team that our campus and this city are proud to rally around. The foundation is here for something special, and I can’t wait to get to work because Charlotte’s stock is rising.”

Charlotte is coming off a 17-17 season and a three-year stretch under Fearne that produced a 47-51 record without an NCAA tournament appearance. After a promising start, the team struggled in conference play and faded late, prompting the change.
