(Worthy News) – Italy denied permission last week for U.S. military aircraft to land at the Sigonella air base in Sicily before continuing on to the Middle East, according to sources cited Tuesday, highlighting growing sensitivities among European allies over the ongoing conflict with Iran.
The decision, first reported by the Italian daily Corriere della Sera and confirmed to Reuters by sources familiar with the matter, was based on Washington’s failure to seek prior authorization from Rome. Under existing agreements governing U.S. military installations in Italy, such clearance is required before operations can proceed.
Sources indicated that several U.S. bombers had been scheduled to land at the strategic base in eastern Sicily, but Italy refused permission on March 27 after determining proper procedures had not been followed. Officials emphasized that all requests involving military facilities are reviewed on a case-by-case basis in accordance with national policy and international agreements.
In a statement, the Italian government underscored that relations with the United States remain “solid and based on full and loyal cooperation,” while reiterating its commitment to parliamentary oversight for any involvement tied to the war effort.
The move comes amid broader tensions within NATO, as some European nations distance themselves from U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran. Pedro Sánchez has been among the most outspoken critics, with Spain recently closing its airspace to U.S. aircraft involved in the conflict.
By contrast, Giorgia Meloni has maintained close ties with Donald Trump and has avoided direct opposition to the campaign, though domestic pressure is mounting. Opposition leaders in Italy have called the denial of landing rights an appropriate step, urging the government to resist deeper involvement in the war.
