Talent Optional: Rachael “Raygun” Gunn

by Tanner Coleman

by Tanner Coleman

Tanner is KLZ's staff writer and producer, and an avid sports fan.

With any luck, you missed the B-Girl with the leastest.

“Raygun,” born as Rachael Gunn, is an overnight international sensation and not for good reason.

She performed Friday, August 9th, in the Olympic breakdancing competition. She holds a PhD in cultural studies, and is a researcher and lecturer at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. A lot of people tuned in specifically for her performance, and in a sense, she didn’t disappoint. The 36-year-old Australian, ended up losing her three round-robin battles by a score of 54-0.  You read that right.

In any sport that is a massive blowout, I think you can say the same for breaking. She competed against young b-girls in their late teens and early 20s. She even claimed, “I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best — their power moves…what I bring is creativity“, according to ESPN.  And a creative style, was beyond what she did.

Obviously, a performance with no head spins, and a weird poses like kangaroos (see below), doesn’t seem to qualify as one of the best break dancers in the world. Many people dubbed her performance as a young Stuart from MadTV demanding that you “look what I can do!”

Gunn claimed after the Olympics that she knew she wouldn’t win. Why even go to the Olympics then?

I am sure there are plenty of other break dancers form other nations that would have put up a stronger performance. Gunn made some slithering snake movements and replicated a hopping kangaroo, and even what looks like a frozen praying mantis. It might be the most comical sporting event ever recorded. Yes, we have seen bloopers in every American sport, but to see someone try and fail so miserably makes it an international sensation for everyone.

If she wanted to be famous, she sure earned it!
