The latest episode of Drive Radio on KLZ 560 invites car enthusiasts and experts alike to discuss car performance and maintenance. From the mighty power of the ‘road king’ vehicle to Buck’s enthusiastic review of his service at Altec Automotive, the team covers it all. Along with advice on fluid change baselines and kudos to supportive services, the episode underscores the value of regular automobile maintenance for sustaining engine power and efficiency.
SPEAKER 03 :
It’s a mighty fancy automobile. Oh, she’s a real road king, all right. Zero to 60 in 7.5. She’ll do a quarter of a mile, 13.40. 390 horsepower, 500 foot-pounds of torque.
SPEAKER 16 :
Whatever that is. Performance and image, that’s what it’s all about.
SPEAKER 22 :
There’s no such thing as a stupid question. This is Drive Radio. All of your automotive questions are just one phone call away. 303-477-5600. Drive Radio is made possible by the member shops of Colorado Select Auto Care Centers. To find one near you, go to drive-radio.com. Now, Drive Radio on KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 19 :
All right, Hour 3, Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Myself, Pat Schneidt from Altec Automotive up in Fort Collins. Steve Horvath from Geno’s Auto Service, of course. Larry Unger answering phone for us, of course, as always. And Charlie Grimes, our engineer. Buck and Cheyenne, you are next. I guess it’s afternoon.
SPEAKER 14 :
Oh, yes, it is.
SPEAKER 19 :
Good afternoon. About six minutes after.
SPEAKER 14 :
I finally got down to Altec. last week, and Pat was in Mexico, so he didn’t buy me lunch like he promised.
SPEAKER 09 :
I am so sorry I missed you, Buck.
SPEAKER 14 :
That’s awesome. But anyhow, that’s a class operation. The people are so friendly, and then I wanted all of the fluids changed in it, and They checked it out, and they tried to talk me out of changing a couple of the fluids. And I told them no. I said I wanted the baseline. Okay. Good idea. So I knew when I bought the car, I wanted to know when every fluid was changed to begin with.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, that’s a good point.
SPEAKER 14 :
Good way to do it. So we did that, and we had the – Carbon, I can’t remember the name, the BG carbon thing.
SPEAKER 19 :
The decarbonization.
SPEAKER 14 :
And the MOA. Anyhow, then when we got back, it took most of the day. They gave us a loaner car, which was very nice. It wasn’t new, but it was very adequate. Then we… When we got back and I talked to the tech that worked on the car, and he actually, it was probably 5.30 before I got out of there. And I mentioned to him, a little after 5, I said, you probably want to go. He said, no, that’s fine. You just stay and we’ll talk. So I want to compliment what a good show it was. And I could tell on the way home the difference in power between between when I was driving it. I thought it was pretty good. But the difference in power after having the carbon and the MOA done, you could feel it in the seat of your pants.
SPEAKER 09 :
That’s awesome. Yeah, what a great story, Buck. Thank you for that. What was the vehicle?
SPEAKER 19 :
Oh, well, you went away. That’s all right. We’ll figure that out. Buck, thank you again, though. I appreciate that very much. Andy in Westminster, go ahead.
SPEAKER 17 :
John, were you ever associated with Cypher Engineering? I’m an old guy.
SPEAKER 19 :
Cypher Auto used to be a part of us, but not engineering.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay. And what’s the difference?
SPEAKER 19 :
You know what? Steve, do you know?
SPEAKER 17 :
No, engineering, yeah.
SPEAKER 19 :
I don’t know the difference, to be honest with you. I just know they’re not the same. That’s all I’ve ever known.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, Cypher Auto had a general repair shop and kind of a custom hot rod shop. Correct.
SPEAKER 19 :
The engineering side, I have no – I’ve never been involved with that one at all, Andy.
SPEAKER 05 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 19 :
I don’t know if it’s the same family or – Yeah, I mean, there’s not that many Cyphers, but it’s kind of like Rush. There’s more than one of us. Sure.
SPEAKER 05 :
Maybe too many.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay, I appreciate that. I was just wondering about that. No, not a problem at all, Andy. I’ll tell you another thing I was wondering about. Sure. Do you remember, I’m really an old guy, but do you remember on 41st and T-Home, there was a, I think it was a NASA, distributor, Nash Place, and that’s where they kept that 777 that broke the speed record in the assault flaps. Do you remember that?
SPEAKER 19 :
I don’t.
SPEAKER 18 :
I don’t.
SPEAKER 19 :
That’s before my time. My dad would know all of that, or my uncle might know all of that. Next time I see him, I’ll ask him, Andy, he might remember that. I don’t. That’s before my time. Well, I can understand that. I’m 86. You’ve got 30 years on me.
SPEAKER 17 :
All right, John. Andy, thank you.
SPEAKER 19 :
I appreciate you. Thank you so much for listening. Buck is back. Buck, go ahead, sir. You’re back with us.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, I hope we don’t have the same ups like we did last time. No worries. It was a 2016 Taurus, an ex-cop car with a 3.5 EcoBoost.
SPEAKER 09 :
There you go. Yep, I see your work order here, and thank you for the services and the comments. The technician that you were working with, he’s just a real solid guy. He’s one of our ASC Master Certified. He’s been with us about 16 years.
SPEAKER 14 :
Everybody there was very nice. You have a lady manager. Yes, Michelle. Also, I found out from one of your customers that you guys are heavily involved in supporting the youth in Fort Collins, so I want to give you kudos for that.
SPEAKER 09 :
Thank you very much.
SPEAKER 14 :
The other thing is, I put my wife, the top card didn’t have, I had a power seat on my side. And so I found a power seat off of eBay and put it in for the passenger side. And it hooked right up, no problems with four bolts. The connectors, everything worked fine. But we were giving the airbag light not working properly. And so I’ve got a scan tool, but I didn’t think it was powerful enough. But your guys got their scan tool out and erased the code off of it and took care of it so we don’t have that showing up anymore. So I appreciated that, too.
SPEAKER 09 :
Heck, yeah, a little creative ingenuity.
SPEAKER 14 :
And my wife is very happy with the power seat.
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, thank you very much for the shout-out. That’s just amazing.
SPEAKER 14 :
Oh, and you didn’t pay me a quarter.
SPEAKER 09 :
That’s right. That’s awesome. But I would love to grab lunch with you sometime.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, we’ll probably be back down that way. As I get older, some of the things that I used to find fun, like changing oil and things of that sort, have become not so much fun, so… I’m maybe phasing out a little of my stuff that I do. And you guys can do some stuff. I can’t afford some of the equipment that you guys have down there, like the BGs and some of that. You guys also found out the brake fluid needed changing. And so there’s stuff like that that I’m smart enough to know that I can’t do. But again… Thank you. You have run a class operation. And as always, I appreciate John on Saturdays.
SPEAKER 19 :
Thank you, Buck. Appreciate you very much. Thanks for your kind words for Pat as well. You bet. Made my day. Yep. Thank you, Buck. Appreciate you very much. Have a great rest of your day. We’ll be right back. Lines are open 303-477-5600. Drive Radio, KLZ 560.

SPEAKER 19 :
All right, we are back. Drive Radio, KLZ 560. By the way, thank you very much. I had somebody actually text in and said, are we live today? Yeah, we are live. This is not a prerecorded show. You would be hearing messages that it were if that were the case. No, we are live. March the 8th, we are here. I was not on air. Maybe some of you are confused because I wasn’t on air yesterday afternoon for my evening show because I had my family funeral. Some of you know that story, but I had a family funeral, too. So, yeah, I was not here yesterday afternoon because of that. But, no, I’m here. We’re all live and going at it myself. Pat Schneidt from Alltech Automotive up in Fort Collins. Steve Horvath from Geno’s with me today. Larry Inger, of course, answering phones. Charlie Grimes is here. And if you’re listening to this on Sunday, now that will be. the show from Saturday. So if you’re listening on Sunday, we appreciate that very much. And we’re not here live on Sundays, of course. And most of you, of course, know that. But no, on this particular Saturday, March the 8th, we are very alive and well and looking out the window at a nice, beautiful day here in Colorado.
SPEAKER 05 :
It’s not that many days that we don’t. No, not too many. Yeah, we have a handful a year.
SPEAKER 19 :
And what we’re doing on that is I’ve actually got – I’m actually going to – might as well say this. There’s no harm in saying this. Later this month is the Mecham auto auction, which I normally go to Barrett-Jackson, but because of everything happening with the election and so on, I didn’t get a chance to do that this year. So – I’ve decided to go to the Mecham auction instead. Kind of still gives you a good idea of what’s going on in the marketplace and what’s happening in the classic world and so on. And Josh and Justin from Legacy Automotive and Ridgeline are going to fill in for me that day. I think they’re more than capable of handling that. And they’ll have some other helpers with them as well that day. So we’ll still be live live. that day as well so you might hear one day this month where i’m not here but others will and there’s a rarity we’ll keep things rolling along because i honestly don’t like doing replay shows but there’s just simply times where for whatever reason like pat being in mexico i’m not here Yeah, I can drag gear along and do that, but then it’s not really vacation when you do that. So anyways, yes, we’re here live today. And again, taking your calls, 303-477-5600. The question of the day, which we’ve had a few things or a few inputs on, is what would you tell your younger self? So if you were able to go back in time and give advice to your younger teenage self, what would that be? You guys didn’t chime in much. What would your advice be? You first, Steve. Be nicer to yourself.
SPEAKER 05 :
I was pretty hard on myself.
SPEAKER 09 :
I was too. I agree with you. Yeah, I definitely agree with that. I agree with the be patient that you brought up, John. And I would say also just be a little bit more assertive. I was always just a little bit cautious. And later in life, I think I could have been a little more assertive and gotten a few things done earlier as well. But yeah.
SPEAKER 19 :
That was kind of the opposite.
SPEAKER 09 :
Really?
SPEAKER 19 :
I would imagine.
SPEAKER 05 :
I bet John has been pretty assertive.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, I wanted to get things done, and in some cases probably could have slowed down slightly and may have had things work out differently, but who knows. Yeah, I watched my dad do what you just said, and that’s why I just stepped back just a little bit. Yeah. So you went the opposite. There’s a balance, right?
SPEAKER 09 :
There’s a balance.
SPEAKER 19 :
Oh, there is. Absolutely. Absolutely. And folks listening, that’s true across the board.
SPEAKER 05 :
But honestly, I don’t think either one of us would go back and change any of it.
SPEAKER 19 :
Oh, no.
SPEAKER 05 :
No.
SPEAKER 19 :
No, I had somebody actually, it’s funny you say that, Steve. Somebody a couple of weeks ago on The Daily Show asked me if I were myself in this day and age at that same age. Would I still start and run a business today knowing everything I know that today’s world is different than it was then? And my answer was, of course. Yeah, I would do it all over again. And then I went into kind of a couple of segments of why do I think businesses make it versus those that don’t and so on and so forth. And I went into a lot of that today because, frankly, it isn’t any different today than it was back then as far as that goes.
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, see, that’s exactly what I’m saying. So my father was a small businessman, and I chose to go to college and join the corporate world for almost 30 years. And knowing what I know now, I would not have done that. I would have done the small business from the get-go. And don’t get me wrong. I’ve had a great life, got a great family, but I would have done the small business thing from the get-go, and it would have been a different.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay. And so I can refer this even during the weekday show. Why?
SPEAKER 09 :
I just think that’s who I am as a person. And it took me a little while to realize that. And there’s the customer service side of it. So the automotive repair is a perfect combination of the things I love in life, which are cars, people, and customer service.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay, good answer. Great answer. No, I appreciate that very much, Pat. Rob, you’re next. Go ahead.
SPEAKER 15 :
Gentlemen, I thought I’d fire off a couple of proverbs that came in handy as I got older. Okay, let’s hear it. Let’s hear it. command proposes god that what disposes the other line is god laughs you can make your long-term plans you can do everything i think we carefully but you’re going to be ready to get those plans with the were changing world that’s why i have my academic both with the government doctor i’ve said it’s very hard to get a graduate school everything else but i never was able to get a university job it just didn’t exist at the time i got my doctorate Now, the thing is, Alexander Graham Bell said, when one door closes, another door opens, and people waste a lot of time staring at the closed door.
SPEAKER 19 :
That’s true. Oh, for sure. You’re right about that.
SPEAKER 15 :
You have to be able to pivot, to swing and to adjust and to adapt, and I’ve done the best I can and not too badly. Don’t have customers or business partners. Have friends. Trust the people you’re dealing with. Have a relationship with them. If you do that, though, you’ll be amazed at how well you can work together. There’s a mutual trust and mutual concern for the other person’s comfort and well-being. It’s much better than throwing the money down on the counter and walking out.
SPEAKER 19 :
Can’t argue that.
SPEAKER 15 :
If there’s an opportunity that looks good, particularly if you’re trying to get a part for a vehicle, buy it immediately. That’s another good piece of advice.
SPEAKER 19 :
Absolutely. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 15 :
If you have older cars, especially, if you see the part, grab it immediately because it may not be there. Rob, that’s kind of off.
SPEAKER 19 :
A little different direction of what I was looking for, but you are correct on that, by the way, especially those of you where you’ve got a car you know you’re going to hang on to. If you happen to see a consumable, if you would, that’s something that you know you’re going to need, yes, and buy it. Absolutely. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 15 :
And have a little faith in things. A lot of this boils down to courage. You can think of all the problems, all the threats, all the difficulties, everything else. You just think about them enough, you’re going to be in the fetal position in the corner of the room, too scared to do anything or to try anything. You’ve got to be brave and have faith in God, except that there’s going to be a risk, there’s going to be danger. But you cannot just… cower from everything in the rest of the world and try to draw apart from it. You’re correct.
SPEAKER 1 :
100%.
SPEAKER 15 :
I love the fact. Words of wisdom. And of course, you also play off your courage with reason. The brain says this might not work. Evaluate. Do the hard math.
SPEAKER 18 :
Right.
SPEAKER 15 :
And then the other thing there being that the more you trust God, the more God will help you along with what you’re doing in your life and guide you and guard you. Have the humility to realize you’re going to make mistakes. Have the patience to go back and undo the mistakes. And don’t get sloppy when you’re angry. And the final thing, sorry to throw all this. No, you’re perfect. Go ahead. Anger is an addictive drug that kills you.
SPEAKER 19 :
You’re right. Yeah. Absolutely, Rob.
SPEAKER 15 :
If you’re so good to be angry, you feel so righteous, and you’re so full of hate, and you’ve got all this strength and everything else, you are killing yourself.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yep, you’re right.
SPEAKER 15 :
Just move on. Don’t dwell upon your wrongs. Don’t dwell upon people who have done you harm, bad things. Overcome and take pride in that, but be a better person than the person you’re dealing with. That’s one of the most important things. If somebody does you a horrible wrong, don’t be another creep.
SPEAKER 19 :
Walk away clean.
SPEAKER 15 :
You’ll feel better about yourself later. Man, Rob, words of wisdom.
SPEAKER 19 :
I might actually cut that out and use it again sometime. That was perfect. That was good. You’re the man. Thanks for bringing God’s plan into it. He’s got one. You’re awesome.
SPEAKER 15 :
Any mechanic who doesn’t pray is a fool.
SPEAKER 09 :
Good one, Rob.
SPEAKER 19 :
That is a fact.
SPEAKER 09 :
I will use that Monday.
SPEAKER 19 :
Rob, I’m really quick. I cannot tell you over the years how many times I would leave the shop with a problem, praying all night long that it would be fixed by the next morning, but you know what? In doing so, it prepared you for that next morning where, no, the problem wasn’t fixed, but your mental side was… and it enabled you to attack that differently than you were the night before. And how many times it got fixed within 10 minutes.
SPEAKER 15 :
That’s right. Have the faith that you can complete the job. You have the faith to undertake it, and you have the humility if things go wrong to fix what you have to do to fix it. You’re right. If you’re without courage, you’re nothing.
SPEAKER 19 :
You’re right.
SPEAKER 15 :
Thank you very much, John.
SPEAKER 19 :
Rob, thank you. That was great words of wisdom. I appreciate that very much. Howard, you are next.
SPEAKER 11 :
Hey, John.
SPEAKER 19 :
Hey, Howard.
SPEAKER 11 :
Listen, I sent a lot of information to you. I’m still looking for a water pump for my 2001 BMW 750. You know, those sites I went to, as a matter of fact, I called the people that you told me. And when you call them, they’ll say, oh, sorry, don’t have it. The one that fits my car is, you know, 1999 through 2001. And it’s got the outlet for the water-cooled generator, alternator.
SPEAKER 19 :
Right.
SPEAKER 11 :
And I can’t find them anywhere except in Napa has one in Sydney, Australia.
SPEAKER 19 :
In Australia, right. Really?
SPEAKER 11 :
Just got to get it here. Yeah, and I don’t care what it costs. You know, I’m at the point now, I’ve been looking so long that… I’ll pay whatever.
SPEAKER 19 :
Will they not charge you and get a credit card and ship that to you, Howard, or have you gone that route yet?
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, I tried. I talked to the parts guy down there, and he said, you know, we just can’t do it. For some reason, Napa won’t ship anything international. Okay. You know, I know you’re a Napa guy, and I’m hoping you know somebody in corporate that can fix that problem because he said they had two on the shelf in their warehouse. And I’ve heard that in Europe, they’re still making the part. They’re just not making it over here.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yours isn’t a gray market car, is it?
SPEAKER 11 :
No, no.
SPEAKER 05 :
It wasn’t chipped over.
SPEAKER 19 :
So here’s a question. I was thinking about this, Howard, and I apologize. The last couple of weeks I’ve had some family stuff going on and not a lot of extra time to look at things along these lines. But the one thought that I had was, is could you potentially find an international shipper in Australia that could go buy that and then ship it to you? In other words, we’re working then outside of the Napa realm. Right. Right.
SPEAKER 11 :
An international shipper.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, somebody in Australia that just ships parts over to the U.S., could you find a way to get this in their hands and then have them ship it?
SPEAKER 11 :
That’s a great idea, but I’ve never heard of an international shipper.
SPEAKER 19 :
Oh, yeah, there’s people that specialize in doing that in literally every country to the U.S., the U.S. to other countries. There are people that literally, Howard, that’s all they do.
SPEAKER 11 :
Oh. Okay, now would they be online?
SPEAKER 19 :
Yep, I’m actually looking at a few online right now. There are actually some that, again, that’s what they do. And honestly, the thing you might even be able to do is go to somebody like DHL. and say, listen, I’m going to have a, you know, I want to make sure that I arrange for a part to be shipped from Australia to here, and then once that’s arranged, just figure out how your Napa store there, once you pay for it, can just deliver that to the DHL drop-off site and go.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, the manager at the Napa store here, I think I told you about him, he’s tried, he’s been very helpful, and he even talked to corporate, he said,
SPEAKER 19 :
And what I’m saying is we’re going to go around that. We’re going to just get the store in Australia. You pay them, and then part of that payment is they’ve got delivery drivers and stuff just like you would have here. Hey, I want you to drop that off at the DHL. You’re going to box it up, put my name and everything on it, and you’re just going to drop it off, and DHL will handle the rest.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay. Well, I haven’t tried that yet. I’ve tried everything else.
SPEAKER 19 :
That was the only other thought that I had in thinking through all of this with you, Howard, is how do we get it from Australia to here and working outside the Napa system. Yeah, that’s a good thought, though.
SPEAKER 05 :
Do you have the NAPA part number by chance? I do. I can get to you, Steve.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, I have it. I gave it to you.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, I have it.
SPEAKER 11 :
It was in that package of information I sent to you.
SPEAKER 05 :
I’ll look on my own, too. Okay, I’ll send that to Steve. Yeah, I’ll see if there’s another source.
SPEAKER 19 :
But I wouldn’t, any Monday even, Howard, just, well, DHL, I know they’ll ship, and then just say, okay, DHL, if I got this, what location near this parts store would I need to have this part dropped off at, and then work through that. Right.
SPEAKER 11 :
I see. Okay. Well, I’ll give them a call.
SPEAKER 19 :
I mean, it sounds foreign to us because it is, but they’ve got the same system there. It’s just they’re in Australia and we’re not.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yep, that’s true. And I don’t know why. they won’t send it to the Napa store here. That would be great.
SPEAKER 19 :
Another idea from Josh from Legacy. Josh Goff from Legacy just came in. He just texted me. Also, C. Howard, is there a BMW club down there that would go, you know, you get the part all paid for and handled, and all they have to do is pick it up and take it over to DHL, and DHL ships it. That’s another good thought. See if there’s a BMW club down there that will help you. And you might get a new friend out of it.
SPEAKER 09 :
Exactly. You know what I mean? Yeah, for sure. The Internet makes the world smaller.
SPEAKER 11 :
Oh, yeah. Okay, well, John, thank you so much.
SPEAKER 19 :
You’re very welcome, Howard. No, I appreciate that. Thank you. You bet. And Josh, thank you, by the way, for that as well. And, yeah, I can get you the number too, Steve, as well. But I did a lot of back-searching to try to figure out how to do this, and he is right. There isn’t anything in the U.S. at all, and even the couple that I found that I thought might have worked, they did not have inventory. So we just got to figure out how to get it from Australia first. Mike and Bruce, you guys hang tight. We’ll come right back. This is Drive Radio KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 20 :

SPEAKER 16 :
Good afternoon. How are you? Good, Bruce. Good. Love your show. You guys do a great job. I’d always love to listen to you on Saturday.
SPEAKER 19 :
Thank you.
SPEAKER 16 :
So we’ve talked before. I actually have two vehicles with flathead V8s in them right now. And one of them, a 59 Woody, runs like a Singer sewing machine. And I’ve got some fuel problems with the other one. And do you guys know anybody in town? You’re talking about older guys.
SPEAKER 19 :
tools earlier i thought i could call back and ask about the woodies but do you guys know anybody that work on woodies i do not i mean on flathead v8s on flatheads um outside of me my dad and my uncle no actually my dad’s in memory care so me and my uncle know i also don’t um what what what what do you need done bruce i mean they’re not that complicated what are you looking for
SPEAKER 16 :
Well, I think I’ve got a fuel pump problem, and I pulled it off. And as you know, I’m flat on the back.
SPEAKER 19 :
You broke up there because I didn’t hear that part. Oh. Bruce, I’m still losing you. I’ll tell you what, Bruce, what I’m going to do, I’m going to put you back on hold. Let’s let Larry get him a better connection because maybe I can help him on some of this flathead stuff. Mike in Highlands Ranch will squeeze you in. Go ahead.
SPEAKER 07 :
Hey, thanks. This will be real brief. Shout out to Steve at Geno’s and John and Chris and Doug. Got my 2020 limited 4Runner struts replaced, shocks replaced, and did a great job. Great group of people. Thank you. Chris was delightful and wonderful. And John and I got into a huge conversation about some of my favorite exotics that I’ve owned from that little factory in Italy called Modena. Nice. Nice. I didn’t realize that John had spent some time working on those things. And I was also, Steve, thankful for being able to talk to Doug, the actual mechanic that worked on it, which I really like to be able to do. And so I want to say good work, and I’ll let you get back to your next call.
SPEAKER 19 :
Thank you. Mike, as always, appreciate you, sir. All right. All right, man, take care. Let’s go back to Bruce. Bruce, are you back with us now?
SPEAKER 16 :
Yeah, is this better?
SPEAKER 19 :
Yes, that’s much better.
SPEAKER 16 :
So my question was on the coupe I’ve got. I pulled the fuel pump, and I think I’ve got a bad fuel pump. But, you know, there’s a push rod that operates that fuel pump that – It looks like it probably works off of the cam. Is that right?
SPEAKER 19 :
That’s correct.
SPEAKER 16 :
So when you go to put that back together, because it’s kind of hard to get over the fender and seat down in there, how do you line up that push rod? Or is there a little seat that you just sort of feel for?
SPEAKER 19 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 16 :
Okay. As you put the fuel pump on, I guess you just pray and hope that it’s going to stay aligned on the cup.
SPEAKER 19 :
And not much different than what small blocks used to be.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yeah. Okay. Okay. So you asked about thought of the day.
SPEAKER 19 :
Before I forget, too, Bruce, I’ve got a ton of flathead parts and so on, too, by the way. So if there’s something you need before I start selling a bunch of stuff off, please let me know. Do you have any fuel pumps? You know what? Let me look. I have a ton of stuff. I’m not joking. I mean a ton of stuff.
SPEAKER 05 :
Does that rod ever get worn to where it’s too short, or is that not a common thing?
SPEAKER 19 :
Not really a common thing.
SPEAKER 05 :
It was common on another car.
SPEAKER 19 :
Now I’ve got everything, Bruce, from engines itself, blocks, heads, manifolds, intake, exhaust manifolds, you name it. I’ve got a ton of stuff. So contact you how? Just send me a text on the text line, 307-200-8222. Literally, I have a ton of stuff.
SPEAKER 16 :
Okay. So is it odd? Because I looked in that block, it’s real rusty in there, and I assume that that’s just from cleaning.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yep, condensation and junk. That’s right.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yep.
SPEAKER 16 :
So getting back to your question about what would you do different with your teenage years, I would have concentrated a little more on high school and a lot more on college.
SPEAKER 19 :
Ah, nice.
SPEAKER 16 :
And I probably wouldn’t have had to go to the School of Hard Knocks as much as… Good one, Bruce.
SPEAKER 09 :
I’m not sure those two are related, but it could be.
SPEAKER 19 :
I did the School of Hard Knocks, Bruce.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yeah, let’s not go there.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER 16 :
All right, gentlemen.
SPEAKER 19 :
Bruce, thank you very much. I appreciate it. If you need any help on those, yeah, by all means, let me know. John and Aurora, you’re next. Hello, John. Are you there?
SPEAKER 08 :
Great. Oh, there we go. How are you, John? Great. I’m here. Praise the Lord. I pray you guys can answer my question. Okay. I got a 1989 Chevy Suburban 350 throttle body. Okay. And this motor, I had it rebuilt about 30 years ago, and it just runs like a beautiful time clock.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
But a few years ago, I should have known better. I would call a backyard mechanic. I had him work on it. The fuel pump wasn’t kicking in. We rewired them. Monkey rewired them. And I rechecked that. On top of that, I didn’t know that the fuel tank was empty. And I went to start the vehicle, started for a little bit, and beautiful. And, you know, like I said, you can tell with something. We did run sweet. And so I went to try to start it again. She wouldn’t start. And so I… Starting fluid, I didn’t do the fluid, so I thought the best way to go is raw. Bad mistake, went to raw fuel, and then, boy, did she ignite. She didn’t start, she just ignited that throttle body. My question is, is she lactose, or can I take that motor and leave? Finding parts for throttle bodies is pretty hard, I think.
SPEAKER 19 :
No, they’re still around. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, that’s not an issue, John.
SPEAKER 21 :
Yeah, I don’t think so either.
SPEAKER 19 :
No, there’s plenty of parts still.
SPEAKER 05 :
So the fire was underneath the hood then?
SPEAKER 08 :
Pardon?
SPEAKER 05 :
The fire was underneath the hood then? Yes. What all did it damage?
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, it burned a lot of the parts, the auto body parts. Okay. You know, but then it go in the motor.
SPEAKER 09 :
Okay. I think the throttle body bolt-on parts you can actually get at Napa.
SPEAKER 19 :
I was just going to say that. Okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
Now, would you, as a word of advice, would you go for it or just say, hey, like I said, that motor doesn’t even have 3,000 miles on it. Even though it was rebuilt over 30 years ago, I’ve had it. I’ve had that motor start a few times, and she just went like, no. And to me, to give up on it, or just say, hey, get rid of it, no.
SPEAKER 19 :
very sensitive to that motor i don’t know why no it was a good engine the throttle body worked very well it was very reliable and i’m looking right now not only what pad said with what napa may have ebay has plenty of throttle body units for sale new used etc i would redo what you’ve got and keep driving it yep drain the motor and save the motor yes
SPEAKER 08 :
I mean, especially the oil. Should I drain that motor and start that with new oil? Oh, change the fluids? Absolutely.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yes, for sure. You know, I’m looking at a remanufactured throttle body unit on eBay for like $500. So, again, you’ve got multiple options on that one. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay. Well, that’s a good start. My objective is they work to go into her. and do what I want to do instead of having somebody else. You know, you can go to these backyards and I’ll tell you this and this and that, but at least you guys are honest enough to say, yeah, I would.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, absolutely. I would too.
SPEAKER 08 :
Thank you. You’re very welcome, John.
SPEAKER 19 :
Appreciate the phone call. Sharpie and Ron, guys, hang tight. We’ll be right back. Drive Radio, KLZ 560.

You listen to Drive Radio because you have a lot of questions about your car. You have questions about what kind of oil to use, what the best tires are, where to get the best parts. But have you ever asked what will happen to your car after you die? Did you know that if you don’t have a will that specifically states what will happen, a probate judge will order your family to split your car evenly. And because you can’t cut up a car into pieces, your family will be forced to sell it and just split the money. According to Michael Bailey, the mobile estate planner, it is estimated that two out of three people don’t have a proper will in place. And oftentimes, things like your favorite classic car are accidentally forgotten completely. Michael understands that the only way to be absolutely certain that all of your final wishes will be honored is to take a small amount of time to talk about it. 720-394-6887 720-394-6887 Call Michael Bailey, the mobile estate planner, right now to set up a free consultation and make absolutely sure that you don’t leave anything to chance.

All right, we are back. We’ll roll through these calls. Sharpie, you’re next. Go ahead.
SPEAKER 10 :
Hey, how you doing, John? Good, Sharpie. Good. Good to hear from you. Well, good for me to hear from you.
SPEAKER 19 :
Good to talk to you, Sharpie. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 10 :
Hey, I wanted to give you guys a call. I had a college student from Boulder come up to our shop, and I’m too busy to get to this, but it’s about a 91 Camaro.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 10 :
And she got tapped in the right rear quarter in… Whoever hit her had a fairly good-sized truck. Okay. She says that this person backed into her tire in a quarter panel with a trailer hitch, so you could see a mark on the tire. Okay. And then I told her, you know, she said it’s growling, that rear end’s growling back there on that right side. Okay. So I told her, you know, park the car because, you know, we don’t know if there’s brake damage or if there’s capsule damage or whatever, you know. Yep. So anyhow, I was going to ask you. Didn’t you have a shop in Boulder, a mechanical shop? We do.
SPEAKER 19 :
So Legacy Automotive can handle the mechanical aspects of that, and then if it needs any collision work, I’ve got some recommendations I can help you out with in that area as well, Sharpie, or they could also, but on the mechanical side, absolutely, Legacy can do that for you.
SPEAKER 10 :
Okay, Legacy Automotive, okay, because that’s, you know, I do the collision stuff, it’s no big deal.
SPEAKER 19 :
Right. And it’s very… Oh, yeah, then on the repair side, yeah, absolutely, just have Legacy handle it.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, so that’s what I’m going to send her that Monday. Okay. Because I just don’t want her diving it and having that brake issue or something like that. Okay. Yeah, it’s very cosmetic damage to her.
SPEAKER 19 :
And on that one specifically, Sharpie, Legacy asked for Brent. Brent? Yep, tell him I sent you and he’ll take care of you.
SPEAKER 10 :
Okay, perfect.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 10 :
Well, I appreciate it. Appreciate you, Sharpie.
SPEAKER 19 :
Thank you, man. Appreciate you very much. Have a good rest of your afternoon. Ron, you’re next. Go ahead.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah. I’ve got a noise problem that I’d like to have you help me diagnose. It’s on a 2012 Chevy Impala.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 06 :
And it happens only at one time, and it’s the front left. I thought it was the axle, you know, the CV. Okay. But when I back out of the garage, I’m back over a cement driveway and then into a gravel driveway. And then I’ll take a sharp right and then put on the gas, and it’s like the traction control is going on. You know, like the wheels spinning or something, you know, that chattering noise.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, uh-huh, I understand.
SPEAKER 06 :
That’s the noise that I’m trying to diagnose. And I thought it was the… the cv but i you know i’ve tried everything to try to get the cv to make a noise you know in the garage and whatnot and i i it it seems tighter than heck
SPEAKER 19 :
I’m guessing that is part of the traction control is what you’re hearing. Something thinks that it needs to be on with your description of everything you just told me. It thinks for some odd reason it should engage when it shouldn’t be.
SPEAKER 05 :
Okay. That’s my thought. It actually might even be in the wheel bearing itself. Could be. Because that’s where the sensor is and all that stuff.
SPEAKER 06 :
Oh, okay. So the wheel bearing could be bad. Do you think?
SPEAKER 05 :
Bad as far as not making a good connection and not getting a good signal.
SPEAKER 19 :
And then it thinks, I’ve got an issue here, let me turn the traction control on.
SPEAKER 05 :
It doesn’t know the wheel’s turning. That’s right. That’s right.
SPEAKER 09 :
Did I understand too, Ron, you’re backing up and it’s when you hit gravel and give it some acceleration, so something might actually be slipping. And turning. And turning, right. That’s true. That’s true.
SPEAKER 06 :
That’s very true. And it only happens when, you know, it’s in reverse and then I put it in drive and and then put on the gas, and it’s cranked sharply to the right so I can, you know, get out of the driveway correctly.
SPEAKER 09 :
Right, right, yep.
SPEAKER 06 :
Okay, well, that’s maybe better than a CV joint.
SPEAKER 05 :
Probably about the same. Yeah, right. You know, the other thing you might do is you might pull that sensor out just to make sure it doesn’t have any metal or anything on it, but I doubt it does.
SPEAKER 06 :
All right, okay, good, all right.
SPEAKER 05 :
Okay, I appreciate it.
SPEAKER 19 :
You bet, Ron. Thank you so much for that. We appreciate it. James, you’ll be our last caller. Go ahead, James.
SPEAKER 12 :
Okay, my wife has a 2000 Honda Civic that she bought brand new. And the steering was kind of shaking when I was coming to stop signs and stuff like that. Not bad. But as you sat there, the thing would shake. So they got diagnosed as motor mounts, which have never been replaced. So I went ahead and said replace them. And we got those replaced, but the vibration is even worse or not as good now with new motor mounts in it. So they’re saying it’s probably the rack and pinion to replace all that. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER 05 :
First things first, what kind of mounts were they put on? Did they put on an aftermarket or dealer or?
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, actually, you know, they’re going to do an exchange thing. They didn’t put Honda ones on, and they’re going to exchange them.
SPEAKER 05 :
Because sometimes it’s hard to get, you know, some aftermarket manufacturers don’t make good mounts on certain cars, so it’s a challenge those times. Good point.
SPEAKER 12 :
And that’s what they told me, and they asked me to bring it back and see if the shaking, you know, didn’t stop. But they also gave me an estimate, which it’s a 2000, so, you know, we bought it brand new. It’s in great shape. Other than it needs stuff, like, you know what I mean, probably some rack and pinion because that stuff wears out anyway, doesn’t it? And when you’re talking about the tire rods and stuff?
SPEAKER 05 :
Yes, the tire rods are part of the rack and pinion, but they’re replaceable without replacing the rack and pinion. Correct. Correct.
SPEAKER 12 :
Oh, they are. So if one of those or two of those are worn out, you can replace those without it?
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah. Oh, yeah. You just do a new tie rod and a new outer inner tie rod is what we call it.
SPEAKER 09 :
They thread on to the end of the rack and pinion assembly.
SPEAKER 12 :
And the way we’re looking at it is that the new motor mounts was about $1,000 to put four of them on. And then to fix the whole car up to par is another $3,000. Which we figure is worth it because those probably, if you need to sell them and you have proof, you’ve done all this, they probably sell pretty good, don’t they?
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, very. Very good. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 1 :
$2,000.
SPEAKER 12 :
Do you know what we would ask for that if we invested this $4,000 in it? How many miles? $160,000. Not very many for a car that age.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, that’s probably a $500 to $7,500 car when it’s all said and done, depending upon paint, interior, all the rest of it.
SPEAKER 12 :
Right. Okay, yeah, I can relate with that. And how about stuff like the shocks? You need to replace those before you do all that stuff.
SPEAKER 05 :
If they’re bad, yes. Especially at that mileage. I wouldn’t be surprised this age is mileage. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, if they’re original. And I guess my perspective on the value of the car, if you’re putting this money and repairs into it, this is something that you’re going to want to drive for a while because you’re getting in a great condition so you can enjoy it. Absolutely. With that, James, I’ve got to run.
SPEAKER 19 :
I apologize. We’re out of time, but I appreciate it very much. Anything else on that, by the way, you can text me, James, 307-282-22. Steve, Pat, both, thank you guys very much. You’re welcome. Appreciate you, Larry and Charlie as well. Guys, this has been Drive Radio, KLZ 560.
