SPEAKER 07 :
It’s finally Friday on Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush. So I tell him I’m a pro jack. And who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama himself. So we finish 18 and he’s going to sniff me. And I say, hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know. And he says, oh, it won’t be any money. But when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness. So I got that going on. And movie reviews with Andy Payne.
SPEAKER 18 :
I think that you got the wrong impression about me. I think in all fairness, I should explain to you exactly what it is that I do.
SPEAKER 15 :
What I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.
SPEAKER 05 :
Jim Ray, what do you want to do tonight?
SPEAKER 07 :
The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world. Stick a fork in me, Jerry. I’m done. Now, here is your host of Rush to Reason, John Rush.
SPEAKER 08 :
All right, we are here. Friday edition, Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Myself, Andy Pate, Charlie Grimes, and Andy had a nice little vacation.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yes, I did.
SPEAKER 08 :
Glad to have you back.
SPEAKER 04 :
It was fantastic. My gosh, Arizona’s beautiful.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. It is. It is. You are right.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, and as we were talking about before the show, I was just struck by how good the food was down there and also the service. Everywhere we went, Corey and I, we went to several restaurants. And then we also went to a restaurant in Santa Fe. And the thing, and she’s even been posting about it online. The service, like we get good service here in Colorado, too. Don’t get me wrong.
SPEAKER 08 :
I agree.
SPEAKER 04 :
But it was like great. Every single place we went.
SPEAKER 08 :
They understand where their money comes from.
SPEAKER 04 :
I think so.
SPEAKER 08 :
They understand the market, Andy.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, they didn’t. John, it’s like you always talk about. So many workers feel entitled. And that entitlement mentality comes through in how they treat a customer. That’s right.
SPEAKER 01 :
Right.
SPEAKER 04 :
They’re not available enough or they don’t play it up enough. They don’t use any other personality and whatever. And down there, every single place we went, just bam, bam, bam, bam. I was really impressed. Is it like this when you travel a lot or no?
SPEAKER 08 :
When you go to places where they understand tourism and what their… Like Sedona, which is where we went. What their market is, and they understand that, hey, we need to do X, Y, Z to keep these people coming back. And by the way, when it comes to tourism, we’re competing with a lot. And I mean, Andy, a lot of other choices people have to go. And given that, I think the… The better establishments understand that, and so they cater to individuals in a better way. Now, you would think in Colorado that we would be thinking along those same lines because we are exactly that, Andy. We have a lot of people that will roll through, whether it be skiing, whether it’s spring break, whether it’s during the summer, whether they’re going to parks, traveling through, whatever. I’m here to tell you that we have got establishments in this town that don’t understand what I’m talking about.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, they don’t.
SPEAKER 08 :
They’re totally, you know, they’re just moronic about how they do things.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, John, you know I like going up to Breckenridge, places like that. Is the service good up there? Yeah, it’s good. I think it’s fine. It’s quite good. It’s not like this. It’s not like what we saw there. I’m sorry. No, I agree with you. I don’t know if Colorado has a little…
SPEAKER 08 :
bit different mindset or not i have no idea yeah we and it’s not to say that we’re more liberal than sedona because sedona is very liberal very liberal so i don’t want to say it’s that and that’s the issue i just think it’s a matter of knowing again knowing your market okay knowing who’s rolling through and what you need to do to cater to them to keep them coming but i think at times andy we kind of have this attitude of oh we’re colorado they’re coming regardless well you know maybe not
SPEAKER 04 :
Boy, I tell you what, we stopped in Santa Fe on the way back. We went to a restaurant, a barbecue place. You know, I’ve been to all kinds of barbecue places. You know, I’m a connoisseur. It’s everything to me. I live barbecue. The service there, they were falling over themselves. I just couldn’t believe it.
SPEAKER 08 :
We don’t do that here in most cases. We just don’t.
SPEAKER 04 :
It was really nice.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, we don’t do that. And for those of you listening where you would say, well, John, how would you know? Well, you have to realize I live on the west side of town and frequent some of the places like Golden, which, by the way, is very much a touristy area now to go to.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yes, it is very much. Or it’s very much right at the base of the launch point for tourism. So you get lots of tourists there.
SPEAKER 08 :
traffic going through. With School of Mines and Red Rocks and all that, it’s becoming its own destination. And I will tell you that some places do really well at what we’re saying, Andy. Other places, not so well.
SPEAKER 04 :
Not so well.
SPEAKER 08 :
And you would think that they would start realizing that, hey, we need to do this differently so we can keep not only our locals, but even those that are coming through from out of town, we want them to keep coming back. Well, it was just a bit of a stark difference for me. I can’t argue with you on that. I agree with you. And we need to learn some things. Our tourism head, or however you want to say that, whatever that department is, needs to be doing a better job of getting that message out here in Colorado as far as I’m concerned.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, I was really surprised. And, you know, as you know, I go to South Dakota. The service is quite good there. Go to Minnesota, go to Chicago. Obviously, I spend a lot of time in Wisconsin. It’s my homeland. The service in those places is generally pretty comparable to Colorado. Not bad, but not incredible. Not great. And there are two places where I’ve really found it to be incredible. One is the Southwest. When I go to the West Coast, it is not good. Okay, in California, it was awful, just so you know. But when I go down into the Southwest and also the Southeast, the Bible Belt, incredible service. You go to Savannah, Georgia, wow. Incredible.
SPEAKER 08 :
Again, Andy, I don’t think it’s you. I don’t think it’s anything just you are noticing. I’ve heard that from others. I’ve seen it for myself. You are 100% correct. I mean, even places like Atlanta, go there and see what the service is like there versus what it’s like here in Denver. And even Atlanta being a big city, it’s still better than what it is here.
SPEAKER 04 :
Wow.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay. You are correct. I can’t argue that at all. All right.
SPEAKER 04 :
Movies.
SPEAKER 08 :
What are we doing today?
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay. Movies. We’re going to be doing Death of a Unicorn, which, believe it or not, it’s about unicorns, but it’s also a horror movie.
SPEAKER 10 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay. And then we’re doing A Working Man with good old Jason Statham, who we love.
SPEAKER 08 :
There you go. That looks like a good movie, actually.
SPEAKER 04 :
There we go.
SPEAKER 08 :
All right, we’ll be back and do those here in just a moment. And don’t forget, hour number two today. You can start texting these answers in if you would like. We’re going to do sports movies because just that kind of time of the year where we’ve got, you know.
SPEAKER 04 :
March Madness.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, March Madness. Baseball’s kicking off. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER 04 :
Draft.
SPEAKER 08 :
Everything. Well, even football. You have some spring games and things like that even rolling around.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. The draft, all of that. And you’ve got NBA, hockey. Both of them are coming up on the playoffs. I mean, it’s just such a big sports time of year. I thought, let’s do sports movies.
SPEAKER 08 :
Which is always fun, so we’ll do that here in hour number two. SPEAKER 04 :
And welcome back to Rush to Reason, Dead First Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560, John Rush, together with Andy Pate and John. Are you ready for a movie?
SPEAKER 08 :
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, John. Well, you know, John, unicorns are usually very happy creatures, aren’t they?
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER 04 :
Aren’t they sparkly?
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, I have a pet unicorn.
SPEAKER 04 :
Even kind of rainbow?
SPEAKER 08 :
You have a pet unicorn? I do, yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, that’s great.
SPEAKER 08 :
Unicorns, rainbows, all that, yeah.
SPEAKER 1 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, normally they’re very happy and sparkly, but not in Death of a Unicorn. This entire nature preserve was donated by the Leopolds. It’s truly untouched by man.
SPEAKER 11 :
Spot any big game on the way?
SPEAKER 07 :
What was that?
SPEAKER 03 :
Must be moose mating season or something.
SPEAKER 11 :
Aren’t you the most magnificent thing?
SPEAKER 12 :
Unicorns used to be seen like these divine monsters because people fully believed that they could heal literally anything.
SPEAKER 03 :
It’s an opportunity for immortality! We have a moral imperative to harvest every last one.
SPEAKER 12 :
They’re gonna kill us.
SPEAKER 04 :
Don’t move, John. Now, John, when you go home tonight, don’t move because of that unicorn. They’re very dangerous.
SPEAKER 08 :
I see that.
SPEAKER 04 :
Now, you like Paul Rudd, don’t you? Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. He’s funny.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. Well, I’ve always liked him, and he and Jenna Ortega, they star as a father-daughter pairing of Elliot and Ridley. Okay? Now, having lost Ridley’s mom, Elliot’s wife, the two are estranged. Now, Elliot feels they can get some healing of their relationship by driving up to the home of his uber-wealthy boss in North Canada. Now, this boss is Odell Leopold. He’s played by Richard Grant, and he runs a pharmaceutical company. Odell is dying from cancer, so he’s preparing his son, Shepard, played by Will Poulter, to take over. Well, filling out the cast is Odell’s pampered wife, Belinda. She’s played by Tia Leone, one of my favorite actresses. And then, of course, they have their butler, Griff. Oh, wait, I forgot to mention, there’s another character, John. You see, on the way up there, on the drive up to the Leopolds, Elliot gets distracted and hits an animal. Imagine how shocked he and Ridley are when they realize it’s an actual unicorn, a baby unicorn. The animal is in terrible pain, so Elliot does a mercy killing. He doesn’t want to, but he does. And Ridley, though, she touches its horn and instantly connects with the magical creature. So she has this connection and can see way into the future. It’s pretty incredible. Well, once at the Leopold’s, they try to keep it hidden, you know, in the car. But eventually the truth gets out and the greedy Leopold’s, they see dollar signs in exploiting the unicorn’s healing properties. Remember, they run pharmaceutical. OK, time to dissect and torture it, because that’s what every pharmaceutical CEO wants to do. You got to admit, this feels kind of good. I mean, having, sorry to get political for just a second, but having come through COVID, it was kind of remarkable what pharmaceutical companies were willing to do with the human race. or willing to hide from the human race. Just in terms of information, is that pretty fair to say? Yeah. And so watching this, I don’t know, I was kind of watching this and going, this is not entirely surprising, even though it’s a comedy. Well, this is an eat-the-rich story depicting wealthy people as heartless and exploitative. And, of course, the only wise person is the teenage girl who complains about oligarchs. Yuck. Okay, I didn’t like that part. Well, anyway, Ridley, she Googles unicorns, seeing past their happy front into the deep mythology and lore surrounding these magical beasts. And she realizes they’re dangerous. Well, when the unicorn’s parents show up, they’re terrifying. They’re murderous monsters bent on revenge, desperately wanting their baby back. Can’t blame them. I mean, it seems fair to me. They want their baby back. But, of course, the wealthy can’t let it go. The love of a mother. Yeah. You don’t want to come between a bear and its cub. That’s right. I’m just saying.
SPEAKER 08 :
That’s right. Exactly.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, you know, and, of course, this greedy pharmaceutical CEO family, what do they want? The magical qualities, the healing qualities that they can market it. You know, they want the money. Well, in aliens style, the unicorns attack the humans, their scientists, their military style security detachment, everyone. The unicorns are slaughtering at will. Will the rich learn? Will wise Ridley save them? Can anyone be saved? And here’s the question. Should they be? And that’s the story of Death of a Unicorn. What do you think?
SPEAKER 08 :
It doesn’t sound bad for a horror movie, actually.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, it doesn’t sound too bad for a horror movie. Well, what works in Death of a Unicorn? First of all, Jenna Ortega, she always excels in her depressed goth girl routine. That’s what she always does, moping around as only she can. The fact is, she’s very good at it, and she does this role. Winona Ryder used to do it a lot when she was young.
SPEAKER 08 :
Good point.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, and so did Christina Ricci. And now the new one is Janet Ortega. Paul Rudd, he plays a different character from his norm, which is kind of interesting. He’s weak, he’s sucking up, and he’s good at it. He does very well. Reasons, though, run deeper for the being weak and sucking up and his devotion to his daughter is explored as the story unfolds. You kind of see why he’s really sucking up to these rich people that he has no respect for. And it’s for his daughter. And I thought that was pretty interesting. They were adding some heart into the movie. Because for a while there, you’re looking at Paul Rudd and saying, what a jerk, dude. You can’t possibly side with these people. And then you start to realize why and you start to say, you know, you’re all right. And I like that. Will Poulter, do you know him?
SPEAKER 08 :
It doesn’t ring a bell.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay. He is a terrific young actor. He’s excellent as the pampered son. And by the way, so is Anthony Kerrigan. He plays the bitter butler. I thought that they were two of the best characters, maybe the two best characters in the movie. They kind of stole the show. They were terrific. There are several good moments of humor along with a growing dread and gore throughout the movie because these things, when they kill, they really kill. Okay. What doesn’t work in Death of a Unicorn? Well… Jenna Ortega, she’s 22 now. And I just got to say this. It’s time to learn some new roles. She’s playing the same role over and over and over again. And I think maybe it’s time for her to do something new because, boy, is she getting typecast. It’s nothing bad on her in the role in the movie. I’m just saying she probably should do something new next. Naive wealthy people versus wise liberal teen. That’s a threadbare formula that we have seen how many times?
SPEAKER 08 :
Far too many.
SPEAKER 04 :
My gosh. It’s got to be hundreds. And it’s just like, you know, guys, you’re making, first of all, it’s insulting, of course. These liberal teens do not know everything in the universe. But secondly, you’re making this totally predictable right from the start. When you put out that formula, we already know the movie. Yep. I kind of want to see it unfold. The runtime is too long at an hour and 45 minutes. And you might think, well, Andy, that’s not that long. Yeah, it should have been.
SPEAKER 08 :
For this movie, it is?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, it is. Because of what they were trying to do, it really should have been an hour 30. It dragged at times. Just trying to get, especially, I would say, the second quarter of the film really drags. Because they’re wanting to wait a bit before they really unleash the unicorns, right? And so what you’re watching is some of the interplay between the characters. And honestly, it should have been written better. It should have been funnier. If they had had much funnier characters, because this is a comedy horror, right? Then I wouldn’t have minded it dragging because it wouldn’t have been dragging because I’d be laughing. I wasn’t laughing that much just now and then. It wasn’t good. Okay, next. And I’ve already touched on this painfully predictable story. The greed, the greedy, you know, amoral Leopolds. They’re as obvious targets as the lawyer in Jurassic Park or the heartless company man in Aliens. I mean, they’re there to be impaled. They are there to be torn apart, right? And you’re just looking at them saying, what? This is too much of a setup. You’re overdoing it. I’m not sure why the unicorns specialized in pulling out the insides of people.
SPEAKER 08 :
Hmm.
SPEAKER 04 :
I mean, they were overdoing it.
SPEAKER 08 :
Test and grabbers, huh?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. Yeah. You know, and I’m watching this and I’m saying.
SPEAKER 08 :
It’s kind of disgusting.
SPEAKER 04 :
Obviously, I see plenty of horror movies. You know, I can handle it just fine. But it’s like you’re just doing silly shocks. And you’ve already got a movie that’s running long. And you’re trying to do a lot of things here. I’ll get to that in a moment. You’re trying to do a lot of things here. Why don’t you just do straight gore rather than trying to add the disgusting nature to it? And finally, it tries to do too much. You’ve got comedy, horror, anti-rich preaching, family drama, action. You’re trying to do everything at once, and guess what you’re doing well? Nothing. Because comedy, it isn’t that funny. It’s funny at times, but it’s not that funny. Why? Because it’s also trying to preach about the rich. But it doesn’t do that very much. Why? Because it’s also a horror movie. But it doesn’t do that that much until the end. Why? Why? Because you’re a family drama and action. Make one movie, okay? You can combine a few things, but this is over the top. Got it. Rotten Tomatoes gave this movie 57%. That’s not very good. It’s not very good, really. And I kind of grappled a little bit with, I’ll be honest, for me, this was at least a three-and-a-half-star movie. I actually liked it. For general audiences, though, I’m going to take it down a notch to three. Three stars for general audiences. For me, it was three-and-a-half, even four. Overall, I liked it, but I did understand the drawbacks of how it was dragging at times and preaching at times. Political, obviously, one. No, I don’t want to hear this girl know everything when these rich people don’t. Yeah, more religious, too, for obvious reasons. Do I recommend going to Death of a Unicorn? Honestly, sure, if you know what you’re getting going in. OK, go go to this movie. It’s actually a fair amount of fun because I like Paul Rudd and I think Paul Rudd does a really good job in it. I think Jenna Ortega does a good job in it. I think you got some other characters. I thought Will Poulter was terrific and he was a great villain. Anthony Kerrigan was terrific as the butler. So you got some really good performances throughout. And you do have a lot of really good action. Those things are really coming after you. They move really fast, good special effects. I think this is, because I’m going into this, I’m just saying, okay, is this really entertaining? And the answer is yes. You know what? I’m going to go three and a half.
SPEAKER 10 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
I’m going to go three and a half stars quality. It’s entertaining. It’s just a very entertaining, though very much flawed movie. Do I recommend Death of a Unicorn? If you’re into that kind of movie, yeah, it’ll be a fun time out.
SPEAKER 08 :
All right. Veteran Windows and Doors, 35% off. Up to three windows, and if you have four or more, it’s 40% off. Free labor, by the way, on either one of those. Talk to Dave today. Just go to klzradio.com.
SPEAKER 03 :
Veteran Windows and Doors never uses sales reps who are only trained to close the deal. You will work with the owner, Dave Bancroft, and he knows windows are very prescriptive, meaning each home is unique in where it is in elevation and whether the windows face the sun or not. That’s why Dave makes sure you understand every value and rating for your windows so you don’t pay extra for windows that you don’t need. And every window manufacturer advises against using gas filled windows at or above 4000 feet. Other companies will say they have the highest quality and rated windows, yet they still use the wrong products like gas filled windows at the wrong elevations. Those windows will eventually fail. Don’t sign anything until you have met with Dave. Even if you have signed a contract with another company, it may not be too late if the windows don’t meet code or Energy Star criteria for Colorado. Veteran windows and doors will give you 40% off when buying five or more windows and free installation. Find them at klzradio.com today.

You like him. Yeah, I do.

I can watch him. Me too. Really quick before we get into it. Is he one of the most magnetic stars in Hollywood today? I think he is.
SPEAKER 08 :
And I think one of the most underrated. Yeah. Literally. He does his role well. He does it very well. And he’s, you know, I put him on actually probably a better acting level than even like The Rock, although The Rock gets way more notoriety than he does. Am I making sense?
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, yeah, he’s a better actor than The Rock. Not a lot better. I mean, Jason Statham is not going to – nobody’s going to confuse him with Tom Hanks.
SPEAKER 08 :
I like them both, but I just – I think – in both, I think from everything I’ve read, hardworking, solid actors, all of that, don’t get into a lot of political things. I mean, I don’t know if I could even tell you where either one of them stand on those cases because they just don’t get into it.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, Statham I do believe is left-leaning, but here’s the thing. He keeps it to himself. And by the way, he works well with right-leaning people. Sylvester Stallone helped produce this movie. Stallone endorsed Trump. Statham doesn’t care.
SPEAKER 08 :
He just wants a job.
SPEAKER 04 :
And he gets along with everybody. That’s what I like. Okay, let’s jump in. Did you like the movie Taken? Yes. I loved it, right? Well, how about Taken with a British accent and more action? Let’s watch A Working Man.
SPEAKER 20 :
Jenny’s missing. She went out with her friends on Friday.
SPEAKER 01 :
The police don’t have the resources to work these cases. They take a report and forget about it.
SPEAKER 20 :
Please, find our daughter. Where’s the girl? You a cop? You wish I was a cop.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yo, these guys are next level.
SPEAKER 05 :
Look at those bricks. You ain’t a cop. You’re a working man. That’s right.
SPEAKER 18 :
Let’s play.
SPEAKER 20 :
This isn’t just some kidnapping. This is human trafficking. Remember Gunny? Your blind war buddy that doesn’t know he’s blind? That’s the one. If you shot a foot to the left, I’ll be dead.
SPEAKER 11 :
If I wanted you dead, you’d be dead. I will be your weapon sommelier for this evening. This is the real beast here, M-14. Pulled direct from Saddam’s palace. Then I added a Bluetooth scope. Where is she?
SPEAKER 20 :
There’s a special place, high rollers only. They can do anything, as long as they pay. Gangs, the mob, corrupt government officials, they’re all involved in human trafficking. You’re in the payroll too.
SPEAKER 11 :
He killed your way into this. You’re gonna have to kill your way out of it. Food is much. All of this is for a girl. I’m not stopping until I bring her home. That’s for slapping that woman. That woman was my wife.
SPEAKER 08 :
There we go.
SPEAKER 04 :
What do you think, John?
SPEAKER 08 :
That sounds good.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, well, Jason Statham, he stars as Levon Cade, an ex-Royal Marine who now works as a construction foreman for a company owned by Joe Garcia. And Joe Garcia is played by Michael Pena. I love him, don’t you? Remember him in Ant-Man? By the way, really quick, the first Ant-Man, Michael Peña dominated that movie. He was hilarious. Okay. Well, Levon, he has left his fighting days behind for a good reason, John, since he’s trying to rebuild his relationship with his daughter, whom he lost when his wife committed suicide. You see, his father-in-law now has custody of his daughter. His daughter, I think she’s about 8 to 10 years old. And his lawyers are using Levon’s alleged PTSD against him for visitation rights. So Levon has to avoid violence at all costs. And that’s why he’s laying low. It’s not that he’s hiding from his past. It’s that he doesn’t want his past coming between him and his daughter. That’s right. Makes sense. Yeah. But now Jenny, she’s the daughter of Levon’s boss. OK, Levon’s boss, who is Joe Garcia, Michael Pena. OK, she’s kidnapped by Russian mafia in a human trafficking scheme. And before we say that that is to Hollywood, that actually happens quite a bit. The Russian mafia, they do get involved in this. She’s gorgeous, of course, and she’s worth a lot to the worst people. Well, Levon wants to avoid violence, but his love for his daughter makes it impossible to ignore a daughter who has been taken. Besides, she’s also a friend of his. She does the accounting for the company where he works as the construction. You know, so they hang out. There’s some connection. They laugh. Yeah, and so he’s really just… devastated when she’s taken so leave on he unleashes his skills and goes into the dark underworld of drugs and human trafficking he looks up his old contacts tracks down leads and gets bad guys to talk naturally this involves him torturing slime balls for information and fighting endless henchmen but unbeknownst to leave on every bad guy he nails has a higher level bad guy behind him so leave on must work his way up the criminal ladder earning trust eliminating evil Well, ultimately, Levon realizes the whole network must be removed or there will never be peace. Not for him or for any of his friends and family. And of course, not for the Garcia’s. How much can his body take and how much time does Joe’s daughter have? That’s the story of a working. Sounds good. OK, it does sound good. Well, what works in a working man? First of all, watching Statham interact with his daughter was rather heartfelt. It was unique for him. You usually don’t see Jason Statham have such heartfelt moments. You did a little bit in The Beekeeper, though. Okay? This was even more so, and I like that. I like when they broaden it out because, like you said, he’s actually a better actor than he’s given credit.
SPEAKER 08 :
I agree.
SPEAKER 04 :
And so it was kind of nice to see him do that next. As expected, there were some really good fight and chase scenes, some pretty fun stuff. And a couple of the interrogation scenes, these were my favorite. They felt great watching truly evil men get their comeuppance. Yeah, I have no problem with waterboarding these people who are trafficking young women. Yeah, you go for it, buddy. You do what you got to do. I do not care. Okay, and Taken, you keep flipping that switch. I’m fine with it. OK, and I just loved it. It’s good also to have another film looking at human trafficking. I just think we we need a few more of them. We’ve had a few, but I think we need a few more. I love it. What else works in a working man? Oh, no. I was so disappointed by this, okay? What doesn’t work in a working man? Well, John, it’s far too long. It was almost two hours. And that can work for certain movies, not this one. There were too many steps to finding the daughter. There were too many villains that he had to go through and too many scenes and settings that he had to work his way through. Sometimes that can be really interesting, right? It wasn’t here. It just didn’t work. Next, this is going to be weird, but ridiculous outfits, even for Russia mafia types. There were a couple of them, these young ones. They were in these shiny tracksuits. They looked like, you remember the wild and crazy guys from Saturday Night Live, Steve Martin and Dan Aykroyd?
SPEAKER 10 :
Right.
SPEAKER 04 :
They looked almost as ridiculous as that.
SPEAKER 08 :
It’s just like. Why’d they dress them up like that?
SPEAKER 04 :
I don’t know.
SPEAKER 08 :
Is that something new that we’re missing on how to dress?
SPEAKER 04 :
There was a time when basically these Eastern European and Russian mafia types were known for wearing these track outfits, shiny, ridiculous outfits. But we’re past that, folks. I mean, that was a few decades ago. We’re talking 80s, maybe 90s. Okay. Here’s one that really hurt. Too little Michael Peña. What a waste.
SPEAKER 08 :
He’s good, too. I like him.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, he’s such a talent. This film desperately needed his humor because, by the way, Jason Statham is a funny guy, too. And he was barely funny in this movie. So what if you had had Michael Peña following along with him, wanting to get his daughter, and also being a comedic sidekick? Two, a guy who’s also very funny and knows how to play off a comedic sidekick in Statham. I think the two of them would have been great throughout the movie. And that would have been a great tag along. It would have helped big time. They didn’t have it. Pena was barely in the show. He was in it at the beginning, maybe a touch later. And then at the end, that’s it. And what a waste. One thing I learned about the Russian mafia, they can’t shoot. OK, I mean, if you’re running from them, John, and there’s several of them shooting right at you and you’re not far away, they will all miss you. OK, I mean, they’re going to if they have to hunt in the wild, they’re going to starve.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, and that’s not accurate.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, it isn’t accurate. And, you know, when you have better directing, this isn’t the writing. This is the directing. When you have better directing and they set up these chase scenes and they set up that you get just around the corner before they shoot at the corner and take, you know, pieces of the wall off and stuff like that, that works really well, right? When you’re out in the open and they’re shooting at you, you’re on a motorcycle and they’re in a car that’s literally 50 feet behind you going with a machine gun They would blow you right off the bike. Okay. Well, this happened throughout the movie several times. And you’re just like, you know, I’m sorry, but you’re killing the fun here.
SPEAKER 10 :
Right.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay. Because you’re reminding me I’m watching a movie, not a real story. Okay. Here’s another one. If they surround you in a bar or in this guy’s lair or whatever, and there’s like six of them around you, they’re not going to wait and come at you one at a time. Mm-mm. right and they did and it’s just like after a while you’re watching this saying you know this isn’t working right it’s not very fun it’s not very funny you’ve got to be able to do this better you got to be able to set it up what what the real problem was jason statham he was doing great he was doing all the fight moves and everything he was terrific but whoever was choreographing the fight scenes was not making it realistic. And so you got this guy who’s great at what he does in a scene that’s not great at what it does. And it kills a lot of the fun. Okay. Next, this film really lost focus. Remember The Beekeeper last year?
SPEAKER 10 :
Oh, yeah. Good movie.
SPEAKER 04 :
I liked it. No, no. I did, too. It got silly toward the end, right? It got too much, but it kept focused. The story was focused all the way through. True. Boom, boom, boom. You knew what he was doing, why he was doing everything. Well… The beekeeper didn’t have five, six, seven steps that he had to go through in tracking things down to that degree. And so the beekeeper was focused. This was not. And that really hurt the movie. I was like, oh, man. In Taken, watching Liam Neeson uncover the mystery is fascinating and goes at a quick pace from piece to piece to piece. In this film, watching Statham do the same thing is a complete slog. So while this film had the trademark, you know, Statham, tough guy, badassery, it was boring, predictable, dragged out, not funny, and frankly, uninteresting. A lot of it was. Now, I personally, for me, still saw it as an average movie. Because I like that kind of movie.
SPEAKER 10 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
So for me, it’s still two and a half stars. It’s just like the beekeeper. I gave, I think three and a half, I think, even though I said for me, it was a four because it’s my kind of movie. Right. And maybe I gave it a three. I forget, but I, I liked it more for me than for general audiences.
SPEAKER 08 :
I liked it.
SPEAKER 04 :
The, uh, for this one, that’s the same thing. Rotten tomatoes. They gave this, um, I think it’s dropped down to 54%. Okay. All right. And, uh, For quality, I’m going to give it for general audiences. I hate to do this. One and a half stars. There were people next to me at the end who just flat out said out loud, that was awful. And they were just like, yeah. Oh, man, I was bored. That was awful. For me, it was two and a half stars. I’m going to give it one and a half for general audiences. Hate to do it. But I think for guys like me and you, it’s an average movie. It’s tolerable. Political four. Because you’re torturing these human traffickers. I’m all in for that. Right there, you got me. More religious, too, obviously, because of the world, the seedy underworld you’re going into. I mean, obviously, I could say worse, but come on, it’s part of the genre. Yeah, it’s part of what happens. Right. But I don’t want to give it a three because, you know, it’s pretty seedy. So we’ll give it a two.
SPEAKER 10 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
Do I recommend going to a working man? Folks, only if you really want to see Jason Statham, which, by the way, I did. But I think for most people, they’re going to say, you know, this was too long, too slow, and it lost focus. There you go.

SPEAKER 08 :
Now back to Rush to Reason on KLZ 560. All right, we are back. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. All right, tomorrow, Andy, is the Colorado GOP. It is the assembly whereby they will vote for their elected officials that we will then have over the course of the next two years, correct?
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. The leadership for the state party, it’ll be the reorganization meeting for the state party, is tomorrow morning at 9.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
There you go.
SPEAKER 08 :
I am one of the voters. And when, granted, a lot of us won’t be there. I don’t know of any feeds or anything that you’ll be able to watch in. I haven’t really looked into that. What do you think time frame-wise, when does this thing start? When do you think we’ll have a result?
SPEAKER 04 :
I think it’ll be six hours long.
SPEAKER 08 :
And it starts when?
SPEAKER 04 :
Nine. Nine.
SPEAKER 08 :
9, okay, so it won’t be until 3 o’clock or so in the afternoon.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, but you have to keep in mind they’re going to be talking about bylaws and other things as well. You’re going to have people who are going to want to give speeches, people who are going to want to hear their voices for a very long time. This will be Dave Williams’ last time as chair, and so he will want to be giving his speech. Hope Shepelman is running again for vice. And so, you know, and of course you have the candidates for secretary. So it’s, it’s a wide field. There’s five or six. Now there might be a sixth running for chair. Now I believe someone I don’t even know. So, but basically you’ve got five candidates running for chair and three of them are people who would, we would say be more like-minded with you and me. And then you’ve got two who are like-minded with Dave Williams.
SPEAKER 10 :
Right.
SPEAKER 04 :
Who want to basically have the party. I’m not even going to just rip on it. I’m just going to be honest about their stances, okay? Opting out of the primary, closing the primary is numero uno, the number one most important thing at all costs. They will not look at the consequences of it. They only want to do it at all costs. They are people who will file lawsuits at everything in sight. Right. They are people who will work together with Rhino Watch very closely, hand in hand. And these are Lori Sane and Darcy Shaning. And they will work with Rhino Watch. They will call anybody they don’t like a rhino. and continue everything that Dave is doing. And then you’ve got three other candidates. Really, the leading one is Britta Horne. I think it’s going to come down to those two and Britta Horne. I think about 60% of the voters… See, everybody thinks, well, this is the Colorado Republican Party. Aren’t they going to… No, it’s not. No, folks.
SPEAKER 08 :
This is a small faction of…
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. This is why I have problems with the caucus and assembly system being used to choose the leadership. Not against caucus and assembly. I’m against them being used for that purpose. Because the result is… You stack the deck. Right. You stack the deck. You have an entire system that’s attended, even at its widest point, by less than 1% of Colorado Republicans. Well, then you get a sliver of a sliver of a sliver. And that’s this group that’s less than 500 people, I’m one of them, who are going to choose the next chair.
SPEAKER 08 :
For almost a million Republicans in Colorado.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, from almost a million Republicans, we have less than 500 people who are going to choose the next chair. Pretty sure it’s about that. And that group is about 60% Dave people. Davidians. Davidians. And so these are people who want to hyperventilate about… You know, we have to go back to paper ballots. Now, by the way, I would be all for that. But overwhelmingly, Colorado voters do not want that. You know, same day and all this. And they’re going to say the 2020 steal, we must stop it. They’re going to hyperventilate about the 20. What they do is they will push everything that the Colorado voters don’t care about. They are going to – those two candidates will continue to make our party completely unmarketable to most Colorado voters. Now, Britta Horne is the leading candidate of the other side. She would make our party much more marketable to most of those people. And it doesn’t matter if you happen to like Britta, don’t like Britta, or you don’t like – I don’t care.
SPEAKER 08 :
It’s not an issue.
SPEAKER 04 :
I’m just talking about what are we going to focus on.
SPEAKER 08 :
Structurally speaking, you’re talking about that end of it.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, because the Colorado, you tell me, John, doesn’t the Colorado market want, let’s see, better roads? No. Okay, that’s what they want. They want better roads. They are very worried about their skyrocketing home costs.
SPEAKER 08 :
Home prices, grocery prices, all those sorts of things, energy, et cetera.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, because of insurance and taxes, our house payments have gone through the roof. This, you know, and obviously things like eggs, which were driven up even further here in Colorado. These are the things they care about. They care about plastic bags. They’d like them back. They care about those things. They don’t care about the things that the Davidians unfortunately fixate on. That’s what we’re going to see tomorrow. Do you want any kind of a prediction?
SPEAKER 08 :
No, let’s talk about that. We’ll do a recap on Tuesday. I’ll briefly talk about things Monday just to give everybody an idea of what the results are, but we’ll get into more depth of that and kind of recap. You’ll be at the meeting. You can recap some of that on Tuesday and so on. And one thing I’ll add, too, on the prediction side is there’s a lot of folks out there, some that maybe have some clout, some I would question whether there’s any clout there or not that endorse anything. a particular candidate i’ve never will never endorse anyone publicly uh nor have i on any level just because i don’t feel like it’s my place to do so you know publicly you have to do your own research and determine who it is you would like to vote for at any given time and i mean i think there’s times where you’ll probably know who i would be for but do i do any kind of public endorsements i haven’t in the decade plus i’ve been on air and don’t plan on doing anytime soon
SPEAKER 04 :
No, me either. I won’t do it.
SPEAKER 08 :
So I’m just not that guy.
SPEAKER 04 :
Look, I’m a member of the media, okay? And I’m not going to do endorsements of these candidates. I’m not going to do it.
SPEAKER 08 :
In fact, I think a lot of folks that have, bad idea that you did. I’m not sure why you did. I’m not going to get into those details. You have your own reasons, but I just gave you… Mine. So let’s do this. If you want to teach young kids how to read, which, by the way, is really, really important. Our literacy rate in the country is dropping continually. We’ve got great tools, a tool, I should say, but there’ll be more than one book here in the near future. American Stonehenge by Mike Goldstein, where you can give that book to a young person. You can use it in your family, however you want to do this to actually help young people learn how to read. 10% off if you use code KLZ. Go to jimmyandandrew.com.
SPEAKER 16 :
Only 31% of eighth graders can read proficiently.
SPEAKER 1 :
31%.
SPEAKER 16 :
This is Mike Goldstein, and I wrote American Stonehenge, The Adventures of Jimmy and Andrew, specifically to help fix our children’s illiteracy problem. Reading is a key to critical thinking, and it opens doors for kids as they grow. Reading helps us to figure out the world, to learn new things, and to experience life to its fullest. American Stonehenge has some bigger words, but your child or grandchild will expand their vocabulary. Unlike many other books, American Stonehenge doesn’t talk down to kids. It asks them to continue learning. But it’s more than just big words. It’s a carefully crafted journey, along with history, into a land of imagination. Find out what others are saying about my book by going to klzradio.com slash read where you’ll find a sample and see reviews from people all over the world. And for a limited time, we’re giving 10% off to KLZ listeners. Just use the promo code KLZ.
SPEAKER 08 :
Live and local, back to Rush to Reason. All right, that’s it for this first hour. Hour two coming up here in a moment. We’re going to do movies with or about sports, so hang tight. We’ll come right back. Myself, Andy, and Charlie, Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 20 :
Average Guys.
SPEAKER 09 :
Ordinary Average Guys.
