Join hosts John Rush and Andy Pate for an engaging discussion on the timeless appeal of Western movies and how they starkly contrast with contemporary American culture. This episode dives into the cultural shifts that have occurred over the decades and the persistent nostalgia many have for simpler, more straightforward times as depicted in classic Westerns. Along the way, they explore how Western films serve as a mirror reflecting societal ideals and gender roles that provoke thought and discussion.
SPEAKER 20 :
This is Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 07 :
You are going to shut your damn yapper and listen for a change because I got you pegged, sweetheart. You want to take the easy way out because you’re scared. And you’re scared because if you try and fail, there’s only you to blame. Let me break this down for you. Life is scary. Get used to it. There are no magical fixes.
SPEAKER 15 :
With your host, John Rush.
SPEAKER 18 :
My advice to you is to do what your parents did.
SPEAKER 07 :
Get a job, sir. You haven’t made everybody equal. You’ve made them the same, and there’s a big difference.
SPEAKER 31 :
Let me tell you why you’re here. You’re here because you know something. What you know you can’t explain, but you feel it. You’ve felt it your entire life, that there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there. It is this feeling that has brought you to me.
SPEAKER 22 :
Are you crazy? Am I? Or am I so sane that you just blew your mind?
SPEAKER 10 :
It’s Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush. Presented by Cub Creek Heating and Air Conditioning.
SPEAKER 15 :
All right, and we are into hour number two, Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Myself, Andy Pate. Richard should be joining us here momentarily again this second hour. We have got your favorite Western movies. Some of you are still texting those in. By the way, you can do that. 307-200-8222, 307-200-8222. We’ll take a break here in a moment, come back, and we’ll get rolling along. Any parameters, Andy? No.
SPEAKER 19 :
No, I mean, I think everybody knows what a Western is and, you know, just something of the Western motif. OK, but really quick here, John, you know, one reason I think people love Westerns today.
SPEAKER 15 :
Why is that?
SPEAKER 19 :
Because it’s the absolute opposite of America today.
SPEAKER 15 :
True.
SPEAKER 19 :
It really is. And once again, I’m just saying we do have a highly feminized culture. You know that. And I I’m you know, I’m not picking sides. I’m saying no culture should be dominated by either. And ours is, you know. And I just think there’s something about the Old West that looks at that and just says a man is a man and a woman is a woman and they’re both great and be yourself and just get out there. You know, everybody carried a gun. Protect yourself. You see what I mean? There’s something real about the Old West, something exciting.
SPEAKER 15 :
I can’t argue that. It’s sort of that lost time.
SPEAKER 19 :
That lost time, which today we kind of need back.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yep. Agree.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 15 :
All right. We will be back in a moment. We’ll get rolling. Paul Lundberger is next. He is my insurance agent. He would love to help you with all of your insurance needs as well. He’s a broker now, and he’ll help shop what’s best for you, teach you how to save money on insurance. 303-662-0789.

SPEAKER 03 :
Here’s why you need personal injury attorney Kevin Flesch on your side. He understands the way the jury thinks. In the context of a personal injury case, you’ve been hurt by someone else’s negligence. The idea is that you’re going to try to recover so that you can get back to where you were just prior to that incident occurring. What that really means from a jurist’s perspective is that you’re going to be asking them to award you money. So when we talk about fairness, we’re talking about six people that you don’t know. Those six people view the evidence and make a unanimous decision that will decide what the fair value is. When you’re the one who’s hurt, you have a good idea of what you think it’s worth. The question is, can you persuade those other individuals whom you don’t know and were witnesses to believe that’s what the case is worth? Kevin Flesch understands the way the jury thinks. Call now for a free consultation, 303-806-8886. Is your office ready for a new copier?

SPEAKER 1 :
Phone ringing.
SPEAKER 09 :
National Weather Service in Denver has issued a tornado warning for northwestern Adams County in northeastern Colorado until 4.30 p.m. At 4.10 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado is located over Lake Bowie, or 21 miles northeast of Denver, moving northeast at 15 miles an hour. Hazard. Tornado. Impact expects damage to mobile homes, roofs, and vehicles. Locations impacted include Brighton. Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a well-built building away from windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.
SPEAKER 12 :
The law was the gun, right?
SPEAKER 20 :
You know, right, wrong, or otherwise. It was pretty straightforward, right? You know, you wronged the guy, you either got beat by him or her or whoever it was, and you took your lickings, or you shot the person, or you went, again, like I said, right, wrong, or otherwise. You know, it was against the old west, right? That’s why they call it the wild, wild west. There wasn’t much law. And, you know, again, I think that there is a benefit to, you know, some level of government and some laws, right? A little bit more civilized society. But I also think you hit the nail on the head, Andy, which is this idea that, you know, we go back, right? You know, so we live in that time. Actually, my wife and I sort of… You could go back in time to any time, right? When would it be? And I think for a lot of people, it would be the Western times, like you say, for a variety of the reasons that you mentioned, but also because, I don’t know, it would kind of be cool to walk into a saloon. It would.
SPEAKER 15 :
No, everybody stunk back then, and there wasn’t any bathrooms. So, no, you guys can have that.
SPEAKER 19 :
They didn’t have those in Britain either, let me tell you.
SPEAKER 15 :
I want toilet paper and running water, so it’s all yours.
SPEAKER 19 :
You wouldn’t want to be around the people in Britain back then.
SPEAKER 15 :
No, no.
SPEAKER 20 :
I’m not saying you want to live there, Dad. I’m just saying that you don’t have to go visit. It would be cool to be Clint Eastwood.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, for about two days.
SPEAKER 19 :
You’re killing the fun here.
SPEAKER 15 :
I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Why do you hate fun? I like running water. Not the kind you have to run and get.
SPEAKER 19 :
This is like musicals. You just can’t enjoy anything. You know, I will say this, Richard. I mean, look, let’s say you killed somebody or you stole, you know, robbed a bank or raped a woman, which would be horrible. Or if you stole a horse or whatever, yeah, the law would come after you, right? And you’d have the, they’d be giddy up and they’d go off and try to hunt you down. But the government wasn’t in every detail of your life. They weren’t hounding you about your property. They weren’t hounding you about everything that you do on your property. Well, you got to have it this way. You got to have it that way. You got to have your house this way. You got to meet these requirements with, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER 01 :
You’re right.
SPEAKER 19 :
Everything we do today, the government tells us how we can do it. Back then, you lived.
SPEAKER 20 :
Does that make sense? No, you’re right, Andy. And, Andy, in some sense, too, you have this situation, you know, it’s like if someone does commit a crime, again, not saying our whole current justice system is terrible, but, yeah, you know, we could save a lot of money instead of putting these guys into jail. You know, a 10-cent bullet, you know, solves a lot of problems. Yeah, it does. The reason it was wanted dead or alive back then, you know, like they didn’t care. They just wanted the person brought to justice.
SPEAKER 19 :
I agree. I agree. Okay, let’s go to some really honest government. We’ll start with Blazing Saddles. Here we go.
SPEAKER 22 :
Holy underwear! Sheriff murdered? Innocent women and children blown to bits? We’ve got to protect our phony baloney job, gentlemen. We must do something about this immediately! Immediately! Immediately! Harumph! Harumph! Harumph! Harumph! Harumph! Harumph! I didn’t get a harumph out of that guy. Mr. Governor, harumph. Harumph!
SPEAKER 26 :
You watch your ass. Gentlemen, please rest your sphincters. Well put. Thank you very much, sir. As Attorney General, I can assure you that a suitable sheriff will be found to restore the peace in Rock Ridge. Meeting is adjourned. Oh, I am sorry, sir. I didn’t mean to overstep my bounds. You say that. What? Meeting is adjourned. It is? No, you say that, Governor. What? Meeting is adjourned. It is? Here, play around with this for a while. Oh, thank you, Hedy. No, it’s Hedley. It is? Why don’t you give these out?
SPEAKER 19 :
Now, that was actually more effective government than we currently have in California.
SPEAKER 15 :
That’s true. Harumph.
SPEAKER 1 :
Harumph.
SPEAKER 19 :
Harumph. Harumph. Our meaningless jobs. I know. It’s about right. I just love it. Richard, you are up. Good luck following that.
SPEAKER 20 :
Andy, did you see, I don’t know if you saw this, did you see Mel Brooks’ tweet yesterday?
SPEAKER 19 :
That he’s going to be in the next one? Spaceballs 2. Yeah, Spaceballs. I meant the next Spaceballs, yeah. I’m excited about that.
SPEAKER 20 :
I don’t know if it’ll be good, but. You know, it’s up for whatever it might be. It probably won’t be because the sequels are really hard to do, especially that many years later, right? It’s sort of hard to kind of get it doing. But no, great choice, Andy. Blazing Saddles. Again, let’s file that as we always do into the category of movies. Not that they can’t make today. They won’t make it today. No. But they should make it because it would be very funny.
SPEAKER 19 :
That’s hilarious. You’re right. They won’t make it. You’re up.
SPEAKER 20 :
All right. I’m going to go with… One that my father-in-law loves this movie.
SPEAKER 15 :
Three Amigos. Oh, yes. I think that’s on my list. Hold on here.
SPEAKER 20 :
With Chevy Chase. Dad, you’re one of your least favorite people. Steve Martin.
SPEAKER 19 :
I know.
SPEAKER 20 :
Martin Short.
SPEAKER 19 :
Here we go. Really quick here from the trailer.
SPEAKER 33 :
Who are you? The Three Amigos.
SPEAKER 19 :
Just kill one of them. So dumb. It was actually a pretty slow movie, but it had some really funny moments.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay. You’re up, John. You say so.
SPEAKER 19 :
You didn’t like any of it?
SPEAKER 15 :
I don’t like Steve Martin. Oh, yeah. I forgot about your bigotry. He’s just a dope. Okay.
SPEAKER 19 :
Go ahead.
SPEAKER 15 :
I’m going to leave some of the good ones for later. Now, I did think, Richard, I’ve got Andy’s favorite Western, so I thought I’d start off here just to make sure. He probably has a clip because this is one of his favorite movies, Brokeback Mountain.
SPEAKER 19 :
You’re not going to go with that.
SPEAKER 15 :
No, just kidding.
SPEAKER 19 :
Just kidding. Do a real movie. Real movie.
SPEAKER 15 :
I demand a real movie. 310 to Yuma.
SPEAKER 12 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 15 :
You and I were talking about that the other day.
SPEAKER 09 :
The National Weather Service in Denver has issued a tornado warning for southwestern Weld County in northeastern Colorado until 4.30 p.m. At 4.17 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado is located over Lake Bowie, or 25 miles northeast of Denver, moving northeast at 15 miles an hour. Hazard Tornado to mobile homes, roofs, and vehicles. Locations impacted include Brighton, Fort Lupton, Lock, Bowie, and Hudson. Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a well-built building away from windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.
SPEAKER 07 :
Listen, mister, I’m getting awful tired of your… I’m getting tired of your gas. Now jerk that pistol and go to work. I said throw down, boy.
SPEAKER 17 :
You gonna do something or just stand there and bleed?
SPEAKER 15 :
Chubby Billy Bob. Billy Bob. Was it Chubby? Yeah, I know. It was Chubby Billy Bob Thornton. It does not look like he does today at all. No. Gosh, no. Are you kidding? He’s like half the size today of what he was in that movie. I know. But he was good. He played that jerk. Oh, he did.
SPEAKER 19 :
Perfectly. And it was a minor role.
SPEAKER 15 :
I know.
SPEAKER 19 :
With a great actor.
SPEAKER 15 :
But still, it was great. Oh, yeah. It was so good. That’s a good scene.
SPEAKER 19 :
Kurt Russell. All right, Richard, you’re up.
SPEAKER 20 :
Okay. My wife, and it wasn’t a great movie, obviously. One of the top three, top five.
SPEAKER 19 :
Oh, yeah, yeah. Definitely.
SPEAKER 20 :
All right. Suggested by my wife, a good old Will Smith, Selma Hayek. Yes. Wild, wild west, Andy.
SPEAKER 19 :
Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
I like that movie. I did, too.
SPEAKER 19 :
Most people didn’t. Why? I did. I don’t know.
SPEAKER 15 :
It’s kind of corny.
SPEAKER 19 :
It was totally corny.
SPEAKER 15 :
But it’s good.
SPEAKER 19 :
I liked it.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, I agree with you.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, I had fun.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay. Mine is another corny movie, How the West Was Won.
SPEAKER 1 :
Oh, yes.
SPEAKER 15 :
So corny.
SPEAKER 19 :
That is totally corny.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay, we can’t get… Here you have to ask, which is cornier, it or Blazing Saddles? Because it’s kind of a takeoff of Blazing Saddles on a modern…
SPEAKER 19 :
I’m going to say how the West was won is actually cornier.
SPEAKER 15 :
I think so, yeah.
SPEAKER 19 :
Blazing Saddles is just so irreverent.
SPEAKER 15 :
That’s true. Good point.
SPEAKER 19 :
You know, we can’t go any further without having John Wayne. I mean, the godfather of Westerns. Here he is in true grit being interrogated in court.
SPEAKER 23 :
Come now, how many?
SPEAKER 21 :
We’ll count them two wardens. Twenty-three.
SPEAKER 23 :
I felt you would come to it with a little effort. 23 dead men in four years. That makes about six men a year.
SPEAKER 21 :
It’s a dangerous business.
SPEAKER 23 :
Oh, how much more dangerous for those arrested by you. Now, is it not true that you sprang upon old man Wharton and his two sons with a deadly six-shot revolver in your hand?
SPEAKER 21 :
I always try to be ready.
SPEAKER 23 :
Was this revolver loaded and cocked?
SPEAKER 21 :
Well, a gun that’s unloaded and cocked ain’t good for nothing. Just answer my questions, if you please. Well, a question don’t make sense. Don’t bandy words with counsel, Mr. Cogman. Yes, sir.
SPEAKER 23 :
I believe you testified that you backed away from old man Wharton.
SPEAKER 21 :
Yes, sir.
SPEAKER 23 :
Which direction were you going?
SPEAKER 21 :
Backward. I always go backward when I’m backing away.
SPEAKER 23 :
I appreciate the humor of that remark. Aaron Wharton was standing by a pot when you arrived.
SPEAKER 21 :
More like squatting. He was stirring the fire under the scalding pot. How far did you back away?
SPEAKER 19 :
Six, eight… Actually, it takes a little long to get to the next line, but… It was good.
SPEAKER 15 :
Which one do you like better, that one or the remake? Because the remake’s good, too.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, the remake. I actually like the remake, but no, the original was fresher. The original was better, just more powerful. He was John Wayne, the charisma, and obviously the other characters were so well done. But I thought the original did it justice, was really good, too. Okay. All right, Richard, you’re up.
SPEAKER 20 :
All right. A few animated ones, Andy. Okay. For my kids, a good old Johnny Depp movie, Rango.
SPEAKER 19 :
Rango. It’s on my list. I actually thought it was pretty slow. But, you know, it had moments.
SPEAKER 20 :
It’s definitely a slower kid movie, Andy, but it gets fun colors. They do a good job at, you know, kind of getting a story going. But, yes, it’s a little bit slower than most. I agree. Good one.
SPEAKER 19 :
Go ahead, John.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay. Let’s see here. There’s so many. How about trying to pick ones that we don’t talk about on a routine basis. Young Guns. Yeah.
SPEAKER 19 :
That was a lot of fun.
SPEAKER 15 :
It was a great movie, by the way.
SPEAKER 19 :
I enjoyed it. What a cast, huh?
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, you talk about a great young cast.
SPEAKER 19 :
What a cast.
SPEAKER 15 :
All those guys went on to do miraculous things. Yep.
SPEAKER 19 :
Now, you can have a Western in Austria.
SPEAKER 15 :
Hold on. We got Joe. Oh, we got Joe. Go ahead, Joe.
SPEAKER 19 :
I didn’t see that.
SPEAKER 08 :
Go ahead, Joe. Guys, you know, I’m older than both of you, and I’ve seen, you know, hundreds of westerns well you were in the west and i and i was in the west and i grew up riding horses i gotta tell you for cinematography scenery horseback riding silverado is my all-time favorite it just captures everything in the plot uh you know you had a young kevin costner doing some incredible writing you had brian dennehy as the uh corrupt cop linda hunt as the bar as a saloon paper just scott glenn danny glover uh you know Don’t know if you guys have seen the movie, but it’s one of my all-time favorites.
SPEAKER 19 :
First of all, it’s one of my all-time favorites. Second of all, here’s a quick clip, and it’s John Cleese. He’s the sheriff, and they’re out, and his group is getting shot at. And he talks about his jurisdiction. Here we go.
SPEAKER 17 :
That damn shooting. No, it’s coming from those rocks. Well, let’s go. He ain’t in, Bevan. He’s hit everything he’s aimed at. They won’t be at our jurisdiction until they pass flat time.
SPEAKER 18 :
Today, my jurisdiction ends here. All right, really quick.
SPEAKER 19 :
Because his hat is shot off from a half mile away.
SPEAKER 15 :
Really quick. Whoever recorded that, do they know we have modern hi-fi stereo systems now?
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, I know, and I could not find a good recording, and I looked.
SPEAKER 15 :
I think that was black and white.
SPEAKER 19 :
It was terrible. But… I will say this, though. What a scene. And it’s Danny Glover, and he is about a half mile away, and he’s shooting their hats off.
SPEAKER 08 :
He says, well, they haven’t hit anything. And the guy says, they’ve hit everything they’ve aimed at. And I love the finale with Brian Dennehy and Kevin Kline. The old friends have decided to, one has decided to go bad, and the other has decided to go good.
SPEAKER 19 :
Have you ever seen Kevin Kline play such a not-funny, on-purpose character in a movie?
SPEAKER 08 :
No, and he did it so well. Oh, he did. He nailed it. And Linda Hunt’s one of my all-time favorite actresses. Wonderful. And Jeff Goldblum got the sleazy gambler down with the knife.
SPEAKER 15 :
Gamblers aren’t sleazy. Come on, Joe.
SPEAKER 08 :
He did such a great sleazy job. You can’t get a better cast. couldn’t i’ve never seen a cat there’s been some great westerns with like one or two like you got john wayne and somebody else yeah but you look at the cast i mean you know you’ve got seven eight nine you know big names all did a fantastic job i know you talked earlier about uh somebody who couldn’t act everybody in that movie could act yeah and they nailed it and they nailed it that’s all i got guys awesome joe as always i appreciate you dan you’re next go ahead
SPEAKER 16 :
You guys are forgetting the Clint Eastwood ones, maybe?
SPEAKER 15 :
No, just haven’t gotten there yet. Oh, we got some coming. Yeah, it’s not that far yet.
SPEAKER 16 :
Good, bad, ugly.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yep.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay, just a sec. Here we go. Here we go.
SPEAKER 11 :
Five for you and five for me. Know how much it was now?
SPEAKER 25 :
No, how much?
SPEAKER 1 :
$3,000.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 25 :
There are two kinds of people in the world, my friend. Those with a rope around their neck and the people who have the job of doing the cutting. Listen, the neck at the end of the rope is mine. I run the risks. So the next time I want more than half.
SPEAKER 11 :
You may run the risks, my friend, but I do the cutting.
SPEAKER 19 :
because they had a scam going, and he would shoot the rope and save the guy. It was brilliant. It was so well done. Great movie. I loved it. Keep going, Dan.
SPEAKER 17 :
Yeah, how about a more recent one you guys do quickly, Down Under?
SPEAKER 15 :
Nope, it’s not on my list. We haven’t got there yet.
SPEAKER 19 :
Sorry, but I’ve got to play it. Here we go. I’m ready for you.
SPEAKER 24 :
Some men are born in the wrong century. Good one. Oh, classic scene.
SPEAKER 19 :
And an actor, by the way, who always plays a great villain, I just want to say. But go ahead.
SPEAKER 17 :
John Rickman was awesome. And he played Snape, which was kind of the anti-hero in Potter.
SPEAKER 19 :
Well, actually, his greatest one was Die Hard.
SPEAKER 17 :
Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 19 :
Hans. Yeah. Oh, he’s wonderful. Yeah.
SPEAKER 17 :
Yep. Anyways, I’ll let you guys, I’ve probably got more, but I’ll let you discuss it.
SPEAKER 15 :
That’s all right. No, appreciate you, Dan, very much. Have a good night. Happy Father’s Day as well. All right, Andy, take it away. It’s all you.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay, we’ve got to do, this one is from the trailer for The Quick and the Dead.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay, perfect.
SPEAKER 16 :
Some people deserve to die.
SPEAKER 18 :
TriStar Pictures presents Sharon Stone. I’m gonna kill you if I have to ride all the way to hell to do it. Gene Hackman. There’s nothing on this earth that frightens me now. Nothing. Leonardo DiCaprio.
SPEAKER 03 :
I hate my pants.
SPEAKER 18 :
In a film by Sam Raimi. The quick and the dead. In this town, you’re either one
SPEAKER 19 :
or the other now that movie now i’m not going to say i like it as much as silverado i like it a lot but silverado i like even more however i will say the quick and the dead had a cast that rivaled silverado absolutely oh yeah yeah what do you think richard
SPEAKER 20 :
Yeah, absolutely. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that one, Andy.
SPEAKER 15 :
Quick and the Dead?
SPEAKER 20 :
Quick and the Dead, you should see it.
SPEAKER 15 :
Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman. Oh, yes, sorry. Yes, you have. We used to watch it a lot when you were a kid.
SPEAKER 20 :
Gene Hackman, right?
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 20 :
And Russell Crowe, right? He’s the pastor.
SPEAKER 15 :
He’s the preacher. He calls him preacher. Preacher. He used to be a gunman, and then he became a preacher, and then Gene Hackman wants him back to be a gunfighter.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, you know Gene Hackman. He played a good guy in Hoosiers and Never Again.
SPEAKER 20 :
Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER 15 :
He’s so good.
SPEAKER 20 :
And then they had the blind guy in there, right, too? The blind kid? Yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, yeah. I forgot about him. Throws the bullets out.
SPEAKER 20 :
Where he finds the bullet and he tosses it in the void.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, that’s right. He throws the bullets out to Russell Crowe. So good. 45 long. 45 long. That’s awesome.
SPEAKER 20 :
Do they have 45 long anymore?
SPEAKER 15 :
No. Those old calibers, no. We figured out there’s better ones now. Things develop, even in guns. Yes.
SPEAKER 20 :
We have developed.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yes. Okay.
SPEAKER 20 :
All right, Andy, it would not be a thing if I did not bring in a TV show. That’s the one you’re thinking. Cheater! But I’m going to go with Spirits for my kids. Again, animated movies about horses. Oh, yeah, yeah. It’s a horse show.
SPEAKER 19 :
Didn’t they make… Well, wait a minute. Didn’t they make a movie off of that? They did make a movie, Spirits.
SPEAKER 20 :
See, Andy? You’re not even cheating well. There you go. I got to find another one to cheat.
SPEAKER 15 :
I know. All right, I have one. I don’t know. This is a TV series, but it’s like a movie. It’s like a mini-movie series. It only was one season. I wish they would have done more, by the way. It is, for all those of you that don’t know about it and have never seen it, and I’m not joking, this is one of the best Western miniseries of all times because Yellowstone is not a Western. It’s in modern days. But this is godless. It’s the name of the series. Okay. It is literally one of the best miniseries, all Western, that you’ll ever find. And what’s Dumb and Dumber, the blonde guy’s name? What’s his name? Richard, what’s his name? Jim Carrey and… Charlie, what’s the blonde guy’s name in Dumb and Dumber? Why can’t I think of his name?
SPEAKER 19 :
I’m just spacing his name.
SPEAKER 15 :
Huh?
SPEAKER 19 :
Jeff Daniels.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yes, Jeff Daniels. So Jeff Daniels in this series, because you always picture him in Dumb and Dumber as being the dumb guy. He is the bad, he’s the outlaw in Godless and plays the part to a T. Well, Jeff Daniels is a terrific actor. Oh, he does a wonderful job. And then Miss Mary from Downton Abbey is the sweet maiden. It’s against him, the outlaw. It’s a really great series. If you’ve never seen it, you guys listening, if you’ve never seen it, it’s on, I think, Netflix. It is well worth watching.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay. All right. Okay, can I play the best line I’ve ever heard in a Western? And this is at the end of the scene. It’s from Unforgiven.
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, yeah, good movie.
SPEAKER 19 :
With Clint Eastwood. And who’s the villain? Gene Hackman, of course.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yes, of course.
SPEAKER 19 :
Here we go.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, sir, you are a cowardly son of a bitch. You just shot an unarmed man. He should have armed himself.
SPEAKER 19 :
Should have armed himself. Should have armed himself. That’s hilarious. I just love that scene. It’s actually a slow movie, but it’s a very good one.
SPEAKER 15 :
Again, I’m trying to find ones we don’t always talk about. How about Pale Rider, speaking of Clint Eastwood? Oh, yeah. By the way, has there been, outside of John Wayne, ever been a better Western actor than Clint Eastwood?
SPEAKER 19 :
No.
SPEAKER 15 :
Him and John Wayne have to be like tops, right?
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah. And I would say John Wayne is the all-time classic, and I would put Eastwood second.
SPEAKER 15 :
But both of them are so great. I would say it depends on the era you grew up in. I would say it’s Clint Eastwood.
SPEAKER 19 :
Well, we grew up, we’re the same age, John.
SPEAKER 15 :
I know. I’m a few months older than you. I watch way more Clint Eastwood stuff than I did John Wayne stuff.
SPEAKER 19 :
I grew up on John Wayne. Well, but I love Clint too. Look, they’re both so far in ahead. I don’t even know who’s number three.
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, I don’t either. That’s a good question.
SPEAKER 19 :
Honestly, who would even be number three? I can’t even imagine. It would be somebody so far back from those two. They’re not even worth mentioning.
SPEAKER 15 :
Because there’s not that many that played that many Westerns over and over and over again. Other than maybe Gene Hackman, actually, to be honest with you. He played as many Westerns as anybody else did. Yeah, but he’s a bad guy. I know, he’s always a bad guy. That’s a great question, by the way.
SPEAKER 20 :
Hey, Kurt Russell was a pretty good Western guy, but he didn’t do it very often.
SPEAKER 15 :
He didn’t do very many. Yeah, he only did a couple. I mean, you can look at Robert Redford and Jeremiah Johnson, which is on my list. That’s another one who did a really great job in Westerns, but didn’t make that many, not like Clint Eastwood and those guys did.
SPEAKER 19 :
No, he only made like three.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay. Anyways, food for thought. Yeah, let’s do this. The other John and Cheyenne is on the phone. We’ll take this before we go to break. Go ahead, John.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, I got a bunch of them to get the time, but my most favorite one, the best Western of all time is Once Upon a Time in the West.
SPEAKER 14 :
Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 06 :
It’s on my list.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, it’s on my list.
SPEAKER 06 :
Henry Fonda and Charles Bronson. That’s a real good favorite one of mine.
SPEAKER 19 :
You know, and if I may, Henry Fonda, he did make a fair share of Westerns. He still wasn’t the Western guy like John Wayne, though.
SPEAKER 15 :
Somebody just texted, a good friend just texted, Tom Selleck’s actually a pretty good Western star.
SPEAKER 19 :
Oh, yeah. Really good.
SPEAKER 15 :
He’s probably right up there with, yeah, I would agree with that one. He fits the pill really well. Yeah.
SPEAKER 06 :
Also, Henry Fonda in Cheyenne Social Club. He was in that one. That one I don’t remember.
SPEAKER 15 :
That’s a good movie, too. I forgot about that. Good one. Good answer.
SPEAKER 06 :
I just love Henry Fonda. That’s a real funny one. Yeah, it is. That’s a real funny one. A bunch of funny ones that were big at the time, but people forgot them, were like Great Scott and Cat House Thursday. That one I don’t know. That one’s got… uh lee marvin in it ah okay um and uh it’s it’s a really funny movie you gotta see it’s a long explanation lee marvin was best when he played villains and he did though he did those in a few westerns he was great you you should look that up i was a real famous movie the great scott and cat house thursday that is a real great movie okay um the other one is um lightning jack With the guy from… Yeah, can’t argue that. Yeah. Yeah. An offbeat one is with Cody Hahn called The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox.
SPEAKER 15 :
Never saw that one.
SPEAKER 06 :
I never saw that. I like Goldie Hahn. George Siegel and Goldie Hahn. She’s funny. You guys probably got these two on your list. Maverick with Mel Gibson.
SPEAKER 19 :
I do not.
SPEAKER 15 :
I think I do have it on my list. Yes, I do.
SPEAKER 19 :
I mean, that’s a riverboat one, but that’s close enough. It’s got some Western in it. Yeah, I’ll go with that. Oh, yeah. It’s all Western. They’ve got guns and horses.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, yeah. It’s Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, and James Gardner. Yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
That’s right.
SPEAKER 06 :
It’s a real good one.
SPEAKER 15 :
They were all really good. Yeah, it was a good one.
SPEAKER 06 :
And the most funniest Westerns is a pair of them, Support Your Local Sheriff and Support Your Local Gunfighter, with James Garner again.
SPEAKER 19 :
James Garner. He was so good in those.
SPEAKER 15 :
I loved him in those. Got those on my list, too. Somebody else mentioned that earlier. John, a good one. Appreciate you. Happy Father’s Day, by the way. Thank you, sir. Thank you, John. Appreciate it. All right, we’ll take a break. We’ll come right back. Listen to this interview that Al Smith did from Golden Eagle Financial.
SPEAKER 05 :
We’ve got Al Smith from Golden Eagle Financial with us in the studio here at KLZ. And Al, I know you’ve been helping people plan for and transitioning through retirement for many, many years, but there are a lot of financial advisors out there. What makes you different?
SPEAKER 28 :
Well, a lot of advisors spend a lot of their time touting their company and the sophistication of their planning software with AI and algorithms and everything like that. And some of the graphs and projections are useful, but I think it’s more important first to get to know more about the people that you can help. That involves more than growing a nest egg. The conversation often goes in the direction of a passion for giving back. That may involve skiing with disabled skiers up in Winter Park or mission trips with their church or mentoring young people. That may be involving fighting human trafficking. I know one volunteers and goes all over the country. in their motor home to help assist those victims of tornadoes and hurricanes and so forth.
SPEAKER 05 :
That is really outstanding. How can people learn more about how you help other folks move through the retirement process and plan for it?
SPEAKER 28 :
Well, they can reach me at my office, which is 303-744-1128. And if you choose to come into the office, I will be sure and make one or both of those books that I’ve written available to you. They’re 18 Holes to Retirement and also The Christian Path to Retirement. The books are very short, but they summarize the important steps involved I guide my clients through whether they have 20 years till retirement or if they’ve been retired for 10 years.
SPEAKER 05 :
That’s great.
SPEAKER 28 :
And how can people reach you, Al? 303-744-1128 is my office number. If I’m not there, either my office manager will pick it up or it’ll go to voicemail. I return my voicemails very promptly and we can arrange a time to sit down and see how what I do can be of help to you.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yes, he does. I can vouch for that. Again, it’s 303-744-1128 for Al Smith of Golden Eagle Financial. You can also find him on the klzradio.com advertisers page.
SPEAKER 29 :
Investment advisory services offered through Brookstone Capital Management, LLC, a registered investment advisor. BCM and Golden Eagle Financial Limited are independent of each other. Insurance products and services are not offered through BCM, but are offered and sold through individually licensed and appointed agents.
SPEAKER 10 :
All right, we are back.
SPEAKER 15 :
And Andy asked me during the break, has John Wayne and Clint Eastwood ever been in a movie together? And no, they have not.
SPEAKER 19 :
That’s funny. I mean, they did overlap.
SPEAKER 15 :
They did. John Wayne was old, and Eastwood was young.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
And they never did, even though they overlapped, they never did a movie together.
SPEAKER 19 :
My gosh, they dominated two eras. It was really cool. Okay.
SPEAKER 15 :
You’re up.
SPEAKER 19 :
I’m just going to do one more clip, and it’s not even Western, but the movie was. It was City Slickers, and this is Billy Crystal, and he’s a depressing dad talking to his kid’s school class at career day. Here we go. And they’re just a bunch of little kids.
SPEAKER 04 :
value this time in your life kids because this is the time in your life when you still have your choices and it goes by so fast when you’re a teenager you think you can do anything and you do your 20s are a blur 30s you raise your family you make a little money and you think to yourself what happened to my 20s 40s you grow a little pot belly you grow another chin the music starts to get too loud one of your old girlfriends from high school becomes a grandmother 50s, you have a minor surgery. You’ll call it a procedure, but it’s a surgery. 60s, you’ll have a major surgery. The music is still loud, but it doesn’t matter because you can’t hear it anyway. 70s, you and the wife retire to Fort Lauderdale. Start eating dinner at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. You have lunch around 10, breakfast the night before. Spend most of your time wandering around malls looking for the ultimate soft yogurt and muttering, how come the kids don’t call? How come the kids don’t call? The 80s, you’ll have a major stroke. You end up babbling to some Jamaican nurse who your wife can’t stand, but who you call Mama. Any questions?
SPEAKER 19 :
You should see the kids’ faces. I’m sure. Anyway, that’ll be the last clip today. Go ahead, Richard. We’re going to go rapid fire.
SPEAKER 20 :
Oh, man. Okay. Let’s see here. Andy, where was I? Oh, Django Unchained.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yep. Weird movie. Very weird. Right?
SPEAKER 20 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
Very angry. Somebody texted this one in, but I’m going to list it anyways because it’s on my list, and it was a funny movie, Cowboys and Aliens. Yeah, it was pretty funny. Wasn’t bad at all.
SPEAKER 19 :
I enjoyed it. Okay, I’m going to do two movies because they were made one after the other, and they’re spaghetti westerns that are comedies, and they call me Trinity, and Trinity is still my name.
SPEAKER 15 :
I have never seen those.
SPEAKER 19 :
They’re surprisingly funny. Very good about two brothers. Go ahead, Richard.
SPEAKER 20 :
This is a rom-com, Andy, just a romantic movie, although I think it’s a little bit of a stretch. My wife sent it in. The longest ride, it actually has Clint Eastwood’s son, Scott Eastwood, in it.
SPEAKER 19 :
Hey, for that alone.
SPEAKER 20 :
It’s a little bit of a stretch, but we’ll give it to her because there’s cowboys and stuff in it. It’s kind of like a western.
SPEAKER 19 :
And there’s an Eastwood. And it’s way better than the one that your dad mentioned earlier in the show. My goodness. Go ahead, John.
SPEAKER 15 :
Let’s see. We did Cowboys and Aliens. How about Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man?
SPEAKER 19 :
Good. Okay. How about Dances with Wolves?
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, slow but good.
SPEAKER 19 :
Slow but good.
SPEAKER 15 :
Jeez, you’ve got to pack your lunch for that one.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, you do. Three hour. Well, this is when Costner was making three hour movie, three hour movie, three hour movie. That was the best one by far.
SPEAKER 15 :
Tatanka.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
Richard, you’re up.
SPEAKER 20 :
Did we do The Magnificent Seven?
SPEAKER 19 :
No, it’s on my list. Yep, next on mine, too. I love that one. Love that one. Open range. And that was next on my list. Okay, how about Rooster Cogburn? Love it with John Wayne. Go ahead. Go ahead, Richard.
SPEAKER 20 :
Oh, maybe I missed this one. Did we do Butch Cassidy?
SPEAKER 15 :
Nope. Nope. And the Sundance Kid. That’s a good one.
SPEAKER 20 :
And the Sundance Kid.
SPEAKER 15 :
That’s such a classic. Go ahead, John. This one’s a funny movie, and I see clips of it all over the place now. The Ballard of Buster Scruggs.
SPEAKER 19 :
Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
It’s hilarious. Yeah.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay. John Wayne Toward the End, The Shootist. Oh, yeah. Wonderful movie. Yeah, it’s a good one. Go ahead, Richard.
SPEAKER 20 :
Let’s see here. Did we do Hostiles with Christian Bale?
SPEAKER 15 :
No, that one counts. Yeah, that’s a good one. Good job. Yep. Well, let’s see. I’ll save that one. Gunsmoke, even though it’s not really a movie, it’s one of the best TV series of all time.
SPEAKER 19 :
It’s totally a TV series. It is. I should say Bonanza.
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, that’s fine, too. That’s a great… No. We grew up on that stuff.
SPEAKER 19 :
No, I’m going to go really Western. Back to the Future 3.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, really. Back to the Future 3.
SPEAKER 19 :
We’re going to really go Western. There we go. Well, at least it’s a movie. Go ahead, Richard.
SPEAKER 20 :
Andy, if we’re going to go that way, I’m going to go with Toy Story 3, the opening scene… And they’ve got Woody and Jesse in it. But the opening scene is them trying to save the orphans from the train. And so that’s an old Western.
SPEAKER 19 :
Hey, in my opinion, all the Toy Stories are Westerns because of Woody. Great character. Great character. Go ahead, John. The Cowboys. Oh, another one I was about to do. Okay, one that John would never do, Shanghai Noon. I never saw that one. It’s funny. It’s very funny. It’s a lot of fun. Okay, go ahead, Richard. We didn’t do No Country for Old Men yet, did we?
SPEAKER 15 :
Nope, that’s one of mine. That’s a great movie.
SPEAKER 19 :
You guys are doing everyone off my list.
SPEAKER 15 :
I love that movie.
SPEAKER 19 :
Go ahead.
SPEAKER 15 :
Did you do Hell or High Water already, Andy?
SPEAKER 19 :
No, I mentioned it at break. Hell or High Water, good movie. Hell or High Water, yeah, that is a good movie. Okay, what about El Dorado? Oh, that’s a good one. Totally a classic. Go ahead, Richard.
SPEAKER 20 :
Um… I don’t know if it’s quite. Oh, I’m going to make it. It’s going to qualify. The Revenant with old Leo.
SPEAKER 19 :
Oh, yeah. I still liked him better in Quick and the Dead. Legends of the Fall. Oh, I did not think of that one. Okay, how about they’ve got to go way back for a classic gunfight at the O.K. Corral.
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, yeah. Yep. Richard, you’re up. Which you know never really happened. Doesn’t matter.
SPEAKER 20 :
What’s that new Costner one?
SPEAKER 15 :
Horizon.
SPEAKER 20 :
Horizon movie? Yeah.
SPEAKER 19 :
Why do you kill the fun of everything?
SPEAKER 20 :
He’s doing like three and whatever. And he didn’t like that one.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, you know what, Richard? I’m still getting over it. You know, I went to gunfight at the old K Corral, and John stands up in the front and says, you know, factually, this didn’t happen.
SPEAKER 15 :
This never happened.
SPEAKER 19 :
We were all having a good time. Never happened. Just wrecked it. Okay, John, you’re up.
SPEAKER 15 :
Let’s see here. You did El Dorado. Shane, it’s an old movie.
SPEAKER 19 :
Oh, yes, and it’s a good one, too. Okay, another really good one, My Darling Clementine. Okay. Classic. Go ahead, Richard.
SPEAKER 20 :
I think we did this one, Brad Pitt, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 20 :
Long title. I don’t know why they do movies like that.
SPEAKER 15 :
I’m going to throw this one in just because of my brother. This was like his favorite movie of all time, Giant.
SPEAKER 19 :
I did not see it.
SPEAKER 15 :
No, it’s like an oldie, and it’s like his favorite, so I’ve got to mention it.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay, how about a little more Samuel Jackson, The Hateful Eight? Oh, weird movie. A little Kurt Russell there? Yeah, definitely a weird movie, but some good acting.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, I agree.
SPEAKER 19 :
Richard, you’re up. Did we do Stagecoach?
SPEAKER 15 :
We did not. No, it’s on my list.
SPEAKER 20 :
I’ve never seen it, but I know you people like those old things.
SPEAKER 15 :
Another old one, but it was a good one. I love old things. Old one, but good one, Buck and the Preacher.
SPEAKER 19 :
Oh, okay. Okay, how about here’s a real classic, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Trust me, good movie. Richard, you’re up.
SPEAKER 20 :
The Wild Bunch.
SPEAKER 19 :
Never saw it.
SPEAKER 15 :
I’m going to rattle off a few from listeners. It’s on my list. I’m going to rattle off a couple from listeners. Go ahead. Murphy’s Romance and Lonesome Dove.
SPEAKER 19 :
Seen them both. Liked them both. Here’s a newer one, Appaloosa. Oh, okay. A little dark, but pretty good. Okay, Richard, you’re up.
SPEAKER 20 :
Another new one, Andy, on Apple. I don’t know if you saw it. I heard it was good, but Killers of the Flower Moon, right?
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, is that good or not?
SPEAKER 20 :
I don’t know.
SPEAKER 15 :
It dragged. It dragged. I keep wanting to watch it, but then I haven’t.
SPEAKER 19 :
It had good moments, but you just wait too long between them, and there you go.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay. Cry Macho.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
Later movie.
SPEAKER 19 :
I actually like that better.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay, The Outlaw Josie Wales.
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, yeah, getting back up to my top. Get back to Clint, baby.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay, Richard, you’re up. The Rider. Nice, okay.
SPEAKER 15 :
Magnificent Seven, did we do that one yet? Yes.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 15 :
Why did I not cross that? That was your son who did that. Yeah, I should have crossed that off. Your son, who you love and who you should always listen to. Two mules for Sister Sarah. Yeah.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 15 :
Or she’s not really a sister.
SPEAKER 19 :
No, no, and that was John Wayne. She’s actually a prostitute, right? Yes. Yes, that’s what I thought. I’m going back to Clint for a few dollars more. Oh, good one.
SPEAKER 20 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 19 :
Richard, you’re up.
SPEAKER 20 :
The Salvation.
SPEAKER 19 :
What is that? I never saw it. That one I don’t know.
SPEAKER 20 :
All right. I don’t know either. Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s in it, and he’s pretty good. Oh, yeah, okay.
SPEAKER 19 :
Wind River. Wind River, yep. It’s on my list. John Wayne, Fort Apache.
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, it’s not on my list. Fort Apache.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yep, classic. Okay, Richard, you’re up. Blackthorn? That one I don’t know. Blackthorn. Oh, yes, I do know that one. I’ve actually seen part of it. Okay, go ahead, John. Hell on Wheels. Okay. How about The Oxbow Incident?
SPEAKER 15 :
Never saw it.
SPEAKER 19 :
It’s quite good. Quite good. Richard, you’re up.
SPEAKER 20 :
I have a random one. I remember we had this DVD, weird, whatever it is, Andy. The Horse Whisperer.
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, yeah. It’s on my list.
SPEAKER 20 :
Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah. Yeah, it’s on my list. That’s a good one.
SPEAKER 20 :
That’s a good movie, actually.
SPEAKER 15 :
And you said The Long Riders is my next one.
SPEAKER 19 :
Okay. How about Jeremiah Johnson?
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, yeah. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 19 :
Go ahead, Richard.
SPEAKER 15 :
The Keeping Room. The Keeping Room? Yeah. Oh, I forgot about that. Yeah. Okay. John? Let me rattle off a couple from listeners. Hidalgo. Hidalgo. Or Hidalgo, yeah, and Rifleman.
SPEAKER 19 :
Oh, yeah. Rifleman was a TV show. Right, but I’ll mention it. Oh, cheaters. Sorry. I got to go back to Clint. High Plains Drifter. Oh, yep. On my list.
SPEAKER 20 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 19 :
Richard, you’re up.
SPEAKER 20 :
It’s not really a Western, and it is a TV series because it’s on Netflix. And it’s got the guy that was in Las Vegas, Josh Duhamel.
SPEAKER 15 :
It’s a good series. Yeah, say it again.
SPEAKER 20 :
Ransom Country.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, it’s good, actually. tv it’s new it’s good actually it’s worth watching is it a movie it’s a it’s like a mini series it’s worth watching actually it’s good yeah it’s like each hour you know each series is a movie basically each hour you know hour and a half have either of you seen deadwood yes good good series also you know i liked it at first it got it got boring as time went by but the original the first parts are very good yeah the first couple absolutely absolutely yes i agree yeah you’re gonna take that one that’s like western
SPEAKER 19 :
No, I wasn’t going to take that one. It’s not a movie. I’m going to John Wayne, Rio Bravo, baby.
SPEAKER 15 :
Rio Bravo? Never saw it.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, it’s a good one. Go ahead, Richard. Did we do hostels?
SPEAKER 15 :
Yes, you did that, Marie. You did it. I did it? Yeah, you did it.
SPEAKER 20 :
No, I didn’t. Yes, you did. Yes, you did. Wow, well, see, there you go. That’s what I’m paying attention to.
SPEAKER 19 :
And you know what you said when you did it? You said, have we done hostels? And we said no. Go ahead.
SPEAKER 20 :
So you took it. The wind. The wind.
SPEAKER 15 :
The Wind. Go ahead, John. I will do this one as my last one. We’ll let Richard go. The Unholy Trinity.
SPEAKER 19 :
The one I just did.
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, you did that one? Sorry, I didn’t remember. No, I just reviewed it today. Yeah, that’s right. Let me add Brimstone then as well, so I’ll put that one on top of that.
SPEAKER 20 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 15 :

Or would you want to make those instructions very clear so your family can know your final wishes in detail? That’s what an estate plan does. It’s not about luck. It’s about making sure what you want to happen is followed, your assets are protected, and your family isn’t left searching for answers.
