Being an expert on general automotive knowledge, what would the correct ignition timing be on a 1955 Bel Air Chevrolet with a 327 cubic inch engine and a four-barrel carburetor?

It is a trick question. Watch this. A Chevy didn’t make a 327 in 55. The 327 didn’t come out till 62. And it wasn’t offered in the Bel Air with a four-barrel carb till 64. However, in 1964, the correct ignition timing would be four degrees before top dead center.

All right. Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Thank you all for joining us. Roy and Dietze from ProTech Auto Shield with us today. We’ve been talking during the first hour about ceramic coating and things along those lines. I did get a text message that came in that said entire vehicle except the roof is PPF. Are any of the spray waxes that you can use today better than the waxes of old on top of the PPF? Or I said, you know, you can actually ceramic coat the PPF, which is probably what I would do. And that’s what I recommend. That’s what I would do versus trying to wax a PPF.
SPEAKER 08 :
And that’s the nice of a PPF. You can do – I mean, you can’t – I mean – You can’t stop doing whatever you want to do with the car. I mean, actually, it’s better because you can scrub it. If you’re washing the car, you can use a brush. You can use whatever you want. It’s all PPF. And it’s all PPF. And then you can still apply wax on top of that or ceramic coating, which is what I recommend, the ceramic coating.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay, so walk me through, because I think this is the other misconception that’s out there. Like everything out there, and you would think most people would understand this, although unless we explain it, most wouldn’t. Is there a quality difference in PPF from one even brand to another? Yes.
SPEAKER 08 :
I know what you’ve told me in the past. Yes. Yeah, I mean, through the years, I mean, technology is getting better and better. Okay. You know what I mean? So, and right now, can I mention brands? Sure, yeah. I mean… 3M used to be one of the best. Used to be on the top, right? Yeah, it used to be on the top. And nowadays, I mean, we have a lot of brands, I mean, different brands, which combines the technology. I mean, they’re pretty good.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, competition breeds more excellence, so that’s a good thing. The more the merrier, in my opinion.
SPEAKER 08 :
Santec, Lumer, which is the same company, you got Expel, you got 3M, and other brands. Personally, I really like, I mean, Expel, which is my main… For PPF and window tint, right? PPF and window tint, what we use at our shop.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. And why is that? Why do you like… Explain why you like their product better than somebody else’s.
SPEAKER 08 :
This company just do the PPF and window film. That’s it. Yeah, and they’re doing ceramic coatings too. Okay. But 3M, let’s compare it with 3M. 3M, they do everything. Right. So for some reason, they got a little behind on the PPF part.
SPEAKER 07 :
Even though they were one of the originators of, right?
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I mean, personally, I mean, they’re still making a really good film. Okay. It’s just, I mean, the adhesive and all that is very aggressive. Meaning, when you go to do a repair or take it off… Removing the PPF, I mean, you leave a lot of adhesive. I mean, even for the installer, for the installation process…
SPEAKER 07 :
it takes longer I mean it’s it’s just more they are I mean the adhesive I mean it’s just to agree agree aggressive aggressive yeah okay so it’s an aggressive adhesive making it harder to work with going on also making it harder to work with coming back off because folks listening you guys all know this things can happen You can have an issue where there needs to be a repair made or something to that effect. And in that case, you’re going to be redoing that particular area of PPF, meaning it has to come off and go back on, right?
SPEAKER 15 :
And not just that. PPF has a warranty. So after most of it’s like 10 to 12 years. So once that time comes, you have to remove it.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay, so you’re going to be taking it off and redoing it at that time. Yeah. Or it starts to get yellow and can cause other issues and so on. Am I thinking correctly along those lines?
SPEAKER 15 :
It depends on the quality of the film, but yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay, so that was the other thing I was going to ask you guys, the quality of the film, because there’s… again going back into the conversation i’ve had a couple of text messages on this when it comes to the dealership level of things and i until meeting you guys i didn’t know this i thought you know i thought ppf was clear bob was clear bob was clear broad i mean i should have known that there’s a difference in quality but again not being in that world i wasn’t really aware of the differences in quality even in regard to the self-healing properties the mill thickness the anti-yellowing and so on there’s a big difference in all of that from one product to another correct
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, that’s correct. So every company, they have like two or three different levels of PPF.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
Which is, I mean, like you have the cheap.
SPEAKER 07 :
Which in a lot of cases, when you go to the dealership and they’re telling you that we’ve, you know, we’ve clear broad this car, we’ve PPF’d it, or we’ve done this, or we’ve done that. Chances are, not always, but chances are they’re probably using the lesser quality film because their cost is less, right?
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So a lot of dealerships in… Even PPF, Chops, I mean, they offer, oh, we use 3M products. Okay. But they don’t tell you which one.
SPEAKER 01 :
Which level of 3M product.
SPEAKER 08 :
Which level are you using. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER 01 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
They have the cheapest one, which is a three, five-year warranty. And then they have the other one with no top coat. You know what I mean? And you never know. So they just tell you the name, 3M, and you think. You think good quality. Good quality is the best.
SPEAKER 07 :
Because you think that’s where I’ve gotten other products from, adhesives and so on. So if they’re using 3M, then it’s got to be top quality product. But they have a good, better, best just like anybody else has, is what you’re saying, right?
SPEAKER 08 :
That’s what I’m saying.
SPEAKER 15 :
And even sales reps, when they come to sell us their product, they’ll tell you, like, oh, you know, like, use this one for your customers. And then you can use this lower brand to sell to the dealerships. So they even advertise it that way.
SPEAKER 07 :
So they even are telling the providers, here’s what you can use for your customer pay person that walks in the door and has top level versus what you’re going to go resell to the dealership because you can get the cost down knowing the dealership is going to mark that up. And by the way, this is how this works, folks. So at the end of the day, that person that comes in, we’ll just use round numbers. Let’s say that person comes in. and the ppf is a thousand dollars okay i’m just going to use round numbers to make this easy so they come into protec it’s a thousand bucks well let’s say they go to the dealership and do the same install it’s 700 but the customer buying the car is still paying the thousand the problem is the same thousand dollars is not the same product at the end of the day even though it’s the same thousand dollars because of the markup that the dealership had to have in that to make that and i’m not against this this is how they make money i I understand that part of it, but what I’m trying to train all of you on is it’s not apples to apples because what that dealership is selling is typically, to Dietz’s point, a lower quality product that’s now being marked up that you could go right to the horse’s mouth, quote unquote, right to the installer and actually get a higher quality product for the same price. Does that make sense?
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Now, here’s the big difference. This is why dealerships are able to do this. At the dealership, they’re wrapping all of that into the price of the car, and you’re financing it. So unfortunately, you’re not even paying $1,000. You’re paying $1,000 plus interest for that particular install where you could use your whatever, your credit card or whatever you want to do, and go to ProTech and have the same job done for that actual $1,000, get a higher quality product done, save money on your monthly payments because that’s not going to get wrapped into the price of the car. And away you go. But that’s how these dealerships are selling that is they’re wrapping all of that, the PPF, the window tinting, the floor mats, the whatever. They’re throwing all of that into the deal and financing it for you. And by the way, they’re making money on the financing as well. So they’re double dipping because they’re making money on the upcharge of what the PPF actually cost or the ceramic coat or whatever it was. Plus, they’re making money on the financing side of that as well. So they’re double dipping, if you would.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
And I’m not against them. Those of you that are in the dealer world that are listening to me, I’m not against you guys. I don’t know dealership guys. I get messages from you all. I know you’re listening and that’s fine. I’m not against you. I’m just trying to explain to the average person and driver out there how this all works. And there are choices. They can go and get these things done on their own. You don’t have to have it all wrapped into the deal. And at the end of the day, you’re typically going to get a higher quality product doing it on your own than letting the dealership do it for you. That’s my point. Now, you could also tell the dealer, listen, I don’t want your general run-of-the-mill stuff. If you’re going to get this done for me, yes, I want to be able to finance this into the package of the car, but I want the highest quality product of what your installer is offering, not the normal dealership cheap level product that you’re probably getting right now. Does that make sense? Yeah. and you can you could you could ask that and just see how how that goes now typically uh they should work with you on that and they’re going to want to have the deal done but you’ve got to ask some of these questions on the front side and by the way most people out there buying cars right now and there’s dealerships right to the west of us where there’s people down there right now as i speak buying cars that have no idea what i just said because they’re not listening to us they should be mike you’re next go ahead

okay and i think i got that when you’re breaking up a little bit but talk about a we’re going to talk about chamois versus other ways to dry and then wd-40 on glass even removing soap scum stains things along those lines did i hear that correctly mike Still losing you. All right, we are back. Mike, go ahead. I apologize. You were breaking up. What I got was the chamois question to start with, but then you were breaking up on the WD-40 question. So hit us again on that one.

Yes, WD-40. It takes off when you have water drop mineralization. On your windshield, I think that WD-40 is the perfect thing to handle that situation.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 09 :
I’ll let you visit about that later. I ask about radiator flush. Your favorite brand, such as if I want a do-it-yourself. Do you have a favorite brand? I know you like the K2 made by Blue Devil for repairing the radiator.
SPEAKER 07 :
And BG on the radiator flush makes probably the best product for that. You can buy that at the Napa stores.
SPEAKER 09 :
And then you can talk about this later also because I’d be listening. are they placing out the green entries and wanting us all to go to yellow? Yes. Oh, interesting. Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yes. Yes is the standard answer, mainly because of the types of metallurgy that are in all of the engines. They’re getting very specific on the type of coolant each manufacturer wants you to use according to what they’re doing. So GM has their DEX cool. Toyota has their particular product. On down the line we go.
SPEAKER 09 :
So let me ask you this. I heard this. You mentioned this in just the last week. I heard you say this. The radiator test strips, they do have an expiration date on them. They do. And so I went and I checked my bottle. My little bottle of test strips is from 2008. So is that a little – that’s when it was supposed to expire?
SPEAKER 07 :
That’s a little old. Yeah, I would buy new ones on that, yes.
SPEAKER 09 :
Wow, I’ve got to go spend like $6.
SPEAKER 07 :
And they do that, and just for everybody listening, they do that, and the same thing happens on test trips for your pool or your hot tub or whatever. They do that because over time, they will degrade. Okay.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, I got to do that then. I knew I had one more question, but I’ll let you go.
SPEAKER 07 :
No worries. No, we’ll answer those. No, Mike, appreciate it. Okay, so let’s start with the – we’ve got a review we’re going to do here in a moment, but let’s start with the drawing sides of things. This is something we haven’t talked a ton about on, you know, you get a car all washed, everything’s all dialed in. What’s the proper way to drive? Mike’s question was back in the day when I grew up, all we had were chamois. Me too. There wasn’t really anything else that had been invented. In fact, I still to this day – have one of the old Maytag roller, what do you want to call it, where basically it’s an old washing machine that just has the tub, it has the rollers on it, where you use that to actually wring out, it’s got a wringer on it is what I’m trying to say, make sure you don’t get your fingers caught in that, but we used to use that to actually dry out the chamois, because when I was a kid, that’s all we had to dry with. I haven’t drugged that machine out for quite some time because there’s newer products out now that allow you to dry the car easier. One of those being, for all of you listening, is forced air, which if you’ve got an exotic car with really nice paint or a car just with really nice paint in general, I will tell you that air drying with a blower is probably one of the best ways to do it, right? One of the best ways, yeah. Just works.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, it works. I mean, better than the chamois, better than a microfiber rack. All of that. You know what I mean? That’s the best way to dry your car.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, and what I would suggest is blow it off. A lot of you even have handheld blowers, like a backpack-type blower only in a handheld version. You have to be careful not to get the tube against the car, of course. But if you’ve got the ability to blow the water off of the car, compressed air, anything along those lines, that’s a great way to do it. So I would do that. Use your microfiber towel or something along those lines around some of the edges where you might not be able to get everything all blown out nice. But that’s what I would do.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, if you don’t have access to an air blower or whatever, use a microfiber rack.
SPEAKER 07 :
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 08 :
Like we’re looking about to dry your vehicle. 500, 600 GSM. That’s the scale. Okay. Microfiber for drying. Okay. That’s a good rack.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. So that’s the proper way to do that. So, Mike, if you’re listening, not that chamois aren’t. The problem with chamois is it’s just hard to get them wrung out. I mean, they worked back in the day. They were awesome. They are expensive, as you guys all know. So buying, you know, even back in the day, I can remember being young in my teens and And the detail guy would roll around. And even at that time, a really good chamois was $40, $50. I mean, this was back in the 80s. It was that much money. Good chamois, yeah. A good chamois was that much money. So think about what that cost would be. And I don’t know if they’ve gotten any cheaper. There’s synthetic versions now. Now, for a lot of you that if you’re… you’re just your daily driver and you’re looking for a good dryer and i’ve used these for years and they’re great they’re not perfect but they work pretty well and that’s the brand absorber and they’re nice where you could actually throw one of those in the door pocket where if you go to a car wash in the winter and you’ve done your underneath and you’re just trying to get the rest of it dried off and You’re not at home, but you’re wanting to get some of that off so it doesn’t potentially – which a car wash shouldn’t water spot because it’s filtered water. But if you want to get some of the excess water off, nothing wrong with an absorber. They work really well. The other nice thing about an absorber is you can use it inside on the screen of your car so that it doesn’t mess up the radio screen or anything like that. It’s a – It’s not really a microfiber, but it’s not a chamois. Think of it as a synthetic chamois. They’ve been around for years. They don’t work half bad as long as you keep them clean. That’s, by the way, true with any of these things. It’s a one-time use, then wash it after you’re done. You don’t want to reuse it, right?
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, I was going to mention that. I remember years ago when I was still using the chamois. We use it. I mean, we use it. We dry the car, and then we wash it right away.
SPEAKER 07 :
And back then, there was even chamois soap that we would use to actually wash the chamois with because that’s the era that, again, as you guys all know, that’s the era that I grew up in because we didn’t have ceramic. I mean, even the waxes we had back then aren’t what we – well, the paint wasn’t even what we have today. Everything is different today from what it was at that time. All right, we’re going to do a car review here in a moment. Before that, though, Conrad, let’s slip you in before we do that. Go ahead.

How’s it going, guys? Good. Good show. My favorite car, of course, is her Camaro Rally Sport that she has, so that answers that question.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 10 :
And my question today is that we’re thinking about maybe moving to a different house, and it’s got a really awesome garage, and the ceiling’s like 10 feet 7 inches from the floor to the ceiling.
SPEAKER 12 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 10 :
And I’m wanting to put a floor lift in there to lift cars up on to change oil and whatnot. Okay. And I was looking at some online there, and I found one I think will fit. But I just wanted to ask you, John, is what brand do you recommend of the two posts? It has about 10,000-pound capacity. What brand do you use?
SPEAKER 07 :
For me, if you’re doing 10,000-pound, I would either look at – and Napa, by the way, sells all these. You can buy them direct from the Napa store. Rotary, Challenger is another good lift. Typically, anything that Napa’s going to have in their line, I would not hesitate to buy. Where I would be hesitant to buy is some of the off-brand stuff that you see listed online and so on. On a two-post especially, I would be really leery of buying somebody’s Chinese import two-post Lyft. Conrad and on a two-post lift when you go to install those the biggest thing on that too is while you might have ceiling height and 10 is minimal you’ll be squatting underneath that car at 10 feet because you won’t get it up high enough to be able to stand up underneath the car you need about 14 foot clearance on a ceiling to really be able to lift a car up and walk underneath it so 10 you’re going to be about four foot short of that. So just think that you may be on, you may be still underneath the car, but you may be sitting on a roll-around stool or something along those lines. Still would work. Your post won’t be 10 feet high, so you can still get the car, you can still get the rack mounted. But your biggest thing in that, you’ve got to double-check, Conrad, is you’ll probably have to drill a hole for this, but you’ve got to check and see how thick your concrete is.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, put footers down, right?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, depending upon where that lift is going and so on, because the last thing you want, and you all have seen pictures of this, where somebody puts a rack in, they bolt it to the floor, put the hilties down into the floor, and the entire floor breaks out.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, I don’t want that to happen.
SPEAKER 07 :
It can happen.
SPEAKER 10 :
But is there a company that could do that?
SPEAKER 07 :
If you contact NAPA, they actually have a, in our area here, they’ve actually got through the tool division installers that will put that in for you also. So that’s why I would, in your case, I’d go to NAPA and have them help you with a whole nine yards.
SPEAKER 10 :
I thought about Napa, too, Johnson, but I wanted to double-check.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yep, they can do the whole thing for you.
SPEAKER 10 :
I know your knowledge a little about all this stuff. All right.

And it’s that time of the week where we do new car reviews. We’ve got a couple to do this week, Richard. We both were in both of these vehicles, but I’ll start with the 2025 Santa Cruz. And I will say that’s a Hyundai Santa Cruz is what I should say. We drove the limited all-wheel drive. This vehicle came in at a… A Monroney price of $4,500, fully equipped. And I’ve talked about this vehicle on Drive Radio numerous times because people will call in and ask, you know, what do I get? You know, what options do I have? I don’t want to buy a full-size, you know, pickup truck or, you know, the medium-sized pickup trucks like… You know, Tundra and Colorado and Ranger, you know, what what other alternatives are there? I just need to pick up bed for some things periodically. Well, the Santa Cruz has got you covered. And what I mean by that is even the load itself. It comes with a retractable cover on the back, Richard. So it’s much like think of it this way. It’s like having. an SUV only with the ability to put a lot taller stuff in the back, yet having all of the same interior creature comforts you would get out of an SUV with the same power of an SUV, all-wheel drive. And I will say, if there’s anything about this car, Richard, that I really enjoyed is, A, it’s very comfortable, very quiet, and it runs fabulous.
SPEAKER 04 :
It does. It is a fabulous running vehicle with that turbocharged engine, especially, as we always say, Dad, At our altitude. Correct. It just works great. And you said it best. It is a small SUV, basically with no back end, which gives you some extra functionality, right? Because you can put some taller things in there, as long as they’re not super heavy, right? This is not a, you know, full, you know, half-ton, three-quarters-ton, one-ton pickup, right? This thing’s not hauling several thousand pounds. No, that’s right. However, it’s not meant to be. But if you do, you know, you did go pick up, I’ll be honest, I actually picked up a safety the other day, 500 pounds. This vehicle would haul that. I think it has a max payload of about 1,400 pounds. Yep, it would haul it just fine.

And you could stand it up and you could put tie-downs on it. Ours did come with a really nice locking kind of a built-in tonneau cover, right? Yes. You could put some stuff in the back. It was easy to pull and easy to slide, which made it easy. There is some storage in the bed compartment. It is not an overly large vehicle. vehicle truck because it is a truck on the inside at least for the backseat passengers the front passengers are just fine however dad if you’re looking for a lot of the creature comfort that comes standard and as you mentioned all-wheel drive this is a vehicle for you right

No, it’s got everything that you could ever want in that size of vehicle. And for those of you listening, yes, this competes with like the Ford Maverick. The Ford Maverick, I should say. The Honda Ridgeline is a little bit larger vehicle. Now, I’m going to say this, and Hyundai, I know you hear all these reviews. Here’s my only complaint. I think it’s a little bit high-priced for what you get at the end of the day. And let me explain, folks, when I say that. This particular vehicle, granted, this was the upper end, and it’s in the low 40s, 42,500. You can spend about $4,000 more. and buy a Honda Ridgeline. Nothing against this particular vehicle. So, again, Hyundai will listen to this. But great vehicle, Hyundai. But I think when you’re trying to compete in the marketplace and have an edge, that price difference, in my opinion, Richard, needs to be a little bit farther apart. That’s my only, literally, that is my only negative with this car. It’s one of the first things I even told my wife when I got in it. Outside of that, is this a car I would own? Absolutely. I just wish the price was a little lower, Richard.

Yeah, well, and with that price increase, if you’re wondering what do I get, you get some more creature comforts, right? You get a little bit more. The touchscreen on the side is a little bit different than some of its competitors. Some more creature comforts as far as, I think, heated and ventilated front seats, if I’m not mistaken, Dan. You get some of those extra features that maybe you deem as more important to you and you would rather have than more room. And follow up on a couple of the questions we had a moment ago from Mike and Conrad. Thanks, by the way. And let me start with Conrad first. For all of you listening, if you’ve got the ability, the ceiling height, you maybe have a little bit bigger shop or barn, or some of these lifts now will even go inside of a regular garage, as long as you have a high enough ceiling to where you can turn a… you know three-car garage into a four-car garage because you can double stack cars in doing so so if you’ve got the ability to put one of the we call them homeowner type units but if you’ve got the ability to put a homeowner unit you know lift into where you can raise one car and drive under it and park the other one knock your socks off it gives you one more parking place that you wouldn’t have otherwise for for a lot less money than adding on to your house to get an extra space out of it is my point.
SPEAKER 01 :
Absolutely, yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
You can put a lift in like that installed for probably $6,000 or so new, and there’s used one of those even available. So if you think about $6,000 to be able to park another car in your garage versus adding on, add a zero to that six if you do an add-on, that’s probably on the minimal side. $60,000 to add on. It’s worth it. So yeah, that lift… enabling you to raise your car up and park under it and also be able to do oil changes and other things along those lines on that same lift. Yeah, it makes it really, really versatile. Now, here’s the nuts and bolts on the homeowner-type car. units versus a production unit that you would have in a regular shop and it really comes down to not the heaviness of the lift and what it’s able to lift and so on because if it’s rated for a certain rating it’ll lift that so if it says that it’s a you know 10 000 pound drive on lift and you can park under it it’s rated for 10 000 pounds now where you start running into two uh differences is maybe the best way for me to say that is speed for example In my shop at home, I’ve got some of these lifts that we’re talking about where I double stack and I park under them. The downside is, and they do exactly what we’re talking about, you can drive on them, change oil. They’ve even got the rolling jacks where if you want to raise the car up on the lift itself, on the drive-on lift, you can do all of that. But for me, my frustrating part with these particular lifts is because of what I’ve always done in my background is they’re slower than Christmas going up and down. because they’re a homeowner unit and they’re usually driven off of 120 volt, not 240 volt. They are literally slower than Christmas. So in my case, I’m so used to a rack, just, you know, you push a button and up it goes and then down it goes and you can work on it. And if you’ve got to go up and down, it’s so simple and easy. Mine, literally, I think I could drink a cup of coffee while the thing raises up.
SPEAKER 01 :
And I’m not exaggerating.
SPEAKER 07 :
It’s that slow. That’s the downside to a homeowner unit to a regular shop production unit. They both will do the same thing at the end of the day, but the speed in doing it isn’t the same. Now, for most of us at home, and even me, I just have to remember to be a little… Even my wife’s like, hey, what’s the big deal? Just cool your jets and take your time. Well, I got stuff to do. I mean, I’m wanting that thing to go up, and I got other things to do. That’s the downside to the homeowner units is they’re just not as fast as… as what a regular production two-post, four-post lift. Now, back to really quick, I wanted to add this in to what Conrad was saying earlier as well. So on the two-post lifts, and this is something to think about for all of you if you’re thinking about doing one at home. Depending upon what you’re lifting, if you’re lifting a full-size F-250, 350, big truck, buy a regular two-post lift. But if you’re not, and if you’re just doing regular cars and even a half-ton truck, a 1500 series truck, buy what they call the isometric lift. So an isometric lift is the posts are tilted. One arm is really short. The other arm is really long on each side. And it enables you to open the doors all the way on a two-post lift, which on a regular two-post lift, because the doors are right where the posts are, you can’t do. And the reason I say that is because your chances of banging the doors, getting in and out of the car once it’s even on the rack on an isometric lift are way less than it is on a regular two-post lift downside is you can’t lift as much and they’re not as stable as they are on a regular you know the isometrics aren’t as stable on a larger vehicle so for example back in the day when i had my shops i had a combination of some some stalls i had isometric lifts in some stalls i had regular lifts in because we did a lot of truck work as well and we wouldn’t put on an isometric lift a full you know f-250 even though it was rated at 9 000 pounds theoretically it would lift it we never did because i didn’t feel safety wise that that’s what i wanted to be underneath on an isometric where a regular two posts with regular length arms and so on, they were fine. But as far as a homeowner use is concerned, if you’re just lifting up your car or whatever, the isometric lifts will do everything you need to do. So, Conrad, if you’re still listening and you’ve got the ability weight-wise to do an isometric lift because you can open the doors all the way up, which some of you are thinking, well, who cares about that? Well, A, it’s the… not having your door ding okay that’s one end of it and there are times when you’re working on your vehicle where you want to raise the vehicle up but have the door open so say for example you’re working on an electrical problem and you got to get into the fuse box it’s nothing better than being able to raise the car up to chest height be able to get in underneath the dash at chest height where you’re not leaning over to work on those things but still have the door open That’s hard to do on a regular two-post lift. Does that make sense? And until you do some of this work, for some of you out there listening, it doesn’t make sense until you’re actually physically doing it. But once you use some of these different pieces of equipment, it starts making sense. So in a homeowner’s application, I personally would only ever buy either… Again, unless you’ve got big trucks, I would only buy an isometric or the smaller homeowner drive-on lifts where you’re just trying to double stack and park. Now, for some of you, depending upon how many cars you have, there is a company out of Texas, I’ll think of their name in a moment, where they make a double drive-on four-post lift. And there’s an advantage to that versus having two four-post lifts because since there’s no center posts in the middle, you can drive two cars on, park two cars under, get four parking places out of one two-stall area, and get it more compact because you don’t have those other two posts down the middle. Now, they’re a little bit… Weird because you can’t really open doors fully. In fact, you may want to drive one on and back one on because that way the doors are opposing, you know, the driver’s door are opposing each other. So you drive one on one way and back the other one on so both doors are out. Otherwise, they’re really tight in the middle. to get in and out of the car. But those are really handy if you’re somebody that’s trying to get extra parking places out of what you own without adding on to your shop, barn, whatever it happens to be. So just something to think about. And if you’re looking at homes, this is another side note for some of you out there where you may be home shopping, because some people are right now because it’s a good time to buy. We were talking about that during the break. Good time to buy a home right now because prices are a little bit down. I’ve always been one to where I’m measuring the garage. I’ve always driven trucks, for example. Most garage lengths are 19 1⁄2 to 20 feet long. Guess how long a truck is? That. Or a little longer. So I’ve always looked at garages that I at least want to have about 23 feet minimum because then you can put a full-size truck inside of the garage. If it’s shorter than that, you may not get that truck inside. Now, that’s me, and I also like the high ceiling. So if it’s got a higher ceiling, that’s a bonus because of some of the things that we’re talking about right now in regards to lifts and things along those lines. Just something to think about. None of what I just said, you know, these are all first world problems. I understand these are not things that, you know, most people have to even worry about. But if you’re thinking about doing those sorts of things, that’s something to look at going back to Conrad’s question. I’ll get to Mike’s other questions in a moment as well. But Dennis and Lakewood, go ahead.
SPEAKER 11 :
Hey, John. I’ve got this 22 Tacoma. Okay. And one of the maintenance procedures is to re-torque the propeller shaft bolt and When they talk about re-torquing something, would that mean to you break a bolt loose and then bring it to torque?
SPEAKER 07 :
I would just check the torque. I think in that particular situation, breaking those loose and re-torquing it, there’s no advantage of. And I will be honest with you, Dennis, in all of the years of working on vehicles, I can tell you I never in my entire life, unless it’s something I worked on, you know, a week or two earlier and we’re just double checking to make sure that everything’s good to go. Never in my life have I retorqued a propeller shaft ever. Yeah. Okay, thank you, yeah. It’s just not something that comes loose. It’s not natural for those to come loose. Those coming out of the factory should have had a little bit of Loctite on them in the first place. That’s why I would not break them loose, because they typically have a little Loctite on them anyways that comes from the factory on the bolt itself when it was installed. And to me, that’s just something they’re throwing in the manual just to be a CYA more than anything. The chances of that coming loose are slim to none. Okay. All right. Thank you for that. Then does that make sense? It does.

No, you’re good, Dennis. You’re all good. That one is one of those where just look at it. If they look good and tight and all of that, I wouldn’t mess with them. Okay, great. Thanks again. All right, we are back. Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Myself, Roy, and Dietze, both from Pro-Tech Auto Shield. And we were just online looking through different lifts and so on. And again, folks, it really does come down to what you like, what you’re used to, and so on. You know, I would tell you that the majority of lifts that are sold by name brand folk, again, Rotary, Challenger, somebody mentioned BendPak.com. personally never been my favorite doesn’t mean they’re a bad lift it’s just for me personally i’ve just never been a big fan and again there’s nothing against them it’s just i guess it’s like in my world working on cars all the years that i did and owning shops and everything you get used to a particular brand of something so for example you get used to a snap-on ratchet versus somebody else’s? Does it mean that one’s better than the other? Well, I think Snap-on’s the best. Will they both do the same thing at the end of the day? Sure. You could take a Craftsman ratchet or a Snap-on ratchet, and they both, at the end of the day, would pretty much do what you needed to do. Just the Snap-on’s a much better way of doing it at the end of the day. So everybody kind of has their preference on that. I am not… I’m going to tell you, go buy one brand over another. I just always found, frankly, personally, my biggest issue with BendPak is I just always found them to be a little bit more clunky. Maybe that’s the way to say it, and I don’t know if that’s the exact word to use or not, but I just found them to be not as refined. Maybe that’s the word that I’m looking for, some of the other lifts that were on the market at that time. But again, this comes down to what do you want to do, and for homeowners, I’ll just be straight up honest. Even if you found a really good used lift, even if the shop was going out of business or something, as long as you’re looking at all of that and the safety cables aren’t stretched and everything’s in good shape and the hydraulic hoses are good and so on, would I hesitate to buy a used lift? No, I would not hesitate to buy a used lift as long as you go through the sort of rebuilding of that, putting it back up, making sure that everything is good to go. Here’s the reality. Will lifts last decades? Yes. Absolutely. There are some lifts out there running around today that are probably 30 years old or more that are still operating and functioning just fine as long as proper maintenance is done to those. And you go through and do the things necessary to make the adjustments. Again, cables need adjusted periodically. Double checking to make sure cables aren’t frayed. There’s no issues there. Those are the safety things that keep things up in the air in case there’s a problem. you know, a cylinder blows or something like that, make sure cylinders aren’t leaking and so on. But, you know, lifts need inspected even in a shop on a routine basis. There are companies that actually do that as a living, I guess you could say, for shops themselves. And as long as things are kept up to speed and you don’t have any issues, you know, going on with a particular lift, would I buy a used lift? Sure. All day long. I mean, keep in mind, there are places in the country, Arizona, California, and others, where they use lifts outside. Mm-hmm. We don’t hear because of our climate and our temperatures in the wintertime, but there’s a lot of people that will put a lift outside and they will work just fine. The other advantage I didn’t mention earlier on the four post homeowner type units as well is the majority of those have a caster system that you can use with them whereby they don’t have to be bolted to the floor. You can put a caster on it on all four corners, and literally one person can move that lift around and reposition it if need be. So if you want to rearrange your shop or your garage and you decide that, oh, I don’t like it in this spot, I want it in this spot, okay, put the casters back on, roll it around. put it in the position you want it to be, take the casters off. There’s a procedure for all of this. And you can roll that lift around and put it wherever you want to accordingly. And somebody actually sent me a picture of one of the double wide lifts that they have on the text line. So what I said is they work. And for those of you that are looking for, you know, more room and you’re trying to get two extra spaces out of it and use one lift to do so, those double wide lifts work really well for that. So. Again, that whole world is no different than what kind of window film are we using versus what kind of ceramic coating are we using versus what kind of PPF. Now, one thing before we end this hour, Roy, that I wanted to talk to you guys about that I get questions on as well is talk to us about paintless dent removal because you guys do that as well. So somebody gets some hail damage or they’ve got a door ding or something along those lines. In most cases, not all, but in most cases, those can be taken out as long as the finish of the car is good. You can typically take that dent out, right?
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. And now that is the season we’re getting some hail storms around the city.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. There was a bunch, there was a bunch yesterday.
SPEAKER 08 :
I was texted earlier this morning about, yeah. Yeah. Give us a call.

So where, where, or how big of a dent can’t you remove?
SPEAKER 08 :
It depends. I mean, uh, I have a guy that works for me and he’s been doing, um, pretty good size dent.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
Uh, but it depends. I mean, it depends on the area. Uh,
SPEAKER 07 :
I mean, if it’s like sandwiched and there’s wrinkles in the, that’s a fixed panel replacement, something along those lines, right? Yeah. But as far as like a dent, and for a lot of you listening, even where there’s a corner, I guess I should say, or there’s a line, they can fix those.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, we can fix that. I mean, in some cases, I mean, we can get it until, I mean, I’m going to say about 98%, 95%. Okay. And you’re not even going to notice it. And that’s what you want. I mean, you don’t want to… It’s better to have it like that than take it to the body shop and then get it fixed, repaint it, and everything.
SPEAKER 07 :
I have said for years, and I’m kind of this way on most anything, if you can keep the factory paint… Yeah. And this is kind of true with all finishes, I feel. If you can keep the factory paint, leave it. I mean, almost at all costs. Even if you’ve got a teeny bit of a dent left, but you’re keeping the factory paint, leave it. Call it good. Get used to it. If you can get that to 90%, leave the factory paint alone, and off you go. And for most people looking at it, minus you, no one will ever know that was there. You might, but no one else will ever know.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. So that’s what we recommend. I mean, if it’s in an area where you can get it 100%, but you can get it 95%, 90%, If you’re good with that, I mean, that’s what we recommend. I mean, just stay like that.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. And, again, for those of you listening where you may have had some hail damage or some of you, you know, depending upon where you park, I happen to be in a building right here to where if I’m not really careful on where I park, I’ll have something, a door ding, a bumper ding, a whatever, because in the area that we’re in where the station is, I’m just going to be straight up honest, they can’t drive for beans down here. It’s awful. I don’t know why, but it is awful. They can’t drive. They don’t seem to care about the car next to them. They look at a car as a tool, and if I bang the door next to me, nobody cares. Roy and Dietze took a big dent out of my truck, a big door ding. I mean, a big door ding not that long ago that you guys got. I would say it’s 100%. Granted, it’s a white truck, so it’s always more forgiving. That’s the other thing, too, folks. As you’re looking at a daily driver and buying a color, lighter is better. Darker is worse because even though they’re pretty and dark colors really come out nice when they’re nice and clean, when it comes to dents and things like that, they show more than the light colors do. Now, what Dietze will say, though, is if you want to wrap the car, get a black one. Get a black one. Darker is better, right? Because it’s easier to wrap.
SPEAKER 15 :

Okay. And really quick, why is that?
SPEAKER 15 :
Uh, because you can, you don’t have to over wrap because everything inside is going to look like it’s the shadow rather than if you have a white car and you’re looking at it from far away, you can like, you know, if you move to the side, you can still see some of the white.
SPEAKER 07 :
Gotcha, because the dark is more forgiving for those deep areas, right?
SPEAKER 15 :
Yes, especially on the trunk where they’re usually somewhat unaligned. If you’re standing very close to it, you can see that you have a different color inside. So unless you pull the whole car apart and do a full, full over-wrapped wrap, then you will be able to cover the color. But in a black car, you can’t see that.
SPEAKER 07 :

I would say it’s pretty much fair game, unless you have like really like paint that’s falling apart, then you require a lot more prep. But yeah, pretty much, you can pretty much wrap anything.

Okay, so those of you listening, it doesn’t have to just be, most people think wrapping is only for advertising and putting your business name and everything like that on it. No, you can do color changes. You can do all sorts of things with wrapping that have nothing to do with advertising your business or having logos or anything like that on it.
