John Rush returns with a thought-provoking discussion about RFK’s recent appearance on Capitol Hill and the unwavering support Big Pharma garners in the political arena. Through insightful commentary, our hosts unpack the complex relationship between politics and pharmaceuticals, questioning the integrity of decision-making that impacts public health. The episode transitions into lighter content with an entertaining movie review segment, keeping the Friday vibe alive with laughter and relaxation.
SPEAKER 04 :
It’s finally Friday on Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush.
SPEAKER 15 :
So I tell him I’m a pro jack.
SPEAKER 06 :
And who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama himself. So we finish 18 and he’s going to sniff me. And I say, hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know. And he says, oh, it won’t be any money.
SPEAKER 15 :
But when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.
SPEAKER 03 :
So I got that going. And movie reviews with Andy Pate.
SPEAKER 16 :
I think that you got the wrong impression about me. I think in all fairness, I should explain to you exactly what it is that I do.
SPEAKER 08 :
What I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.
SPEAKER 02 :
Dude, man, what do you want to do tonight?
SPEAKER 16 :
The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world. Stick a fork in me, Jerry. I’m done.
SPEAKER 04 :
Now, here is your host of Rush to Reason, John Rush. Actually, it’s Andy Pate, party of choice. And I’m your host, Andy Pate, filling in for John Rush. It is good to be back from vacation, and it’s good to hear all of you calling in. So I look forward to hearing from you together with me today. Joining me is Tanner Cole. Man. And Luke Cash. Man. That’s right. Now, Luke is actually on the other side of the glass today. Charlie is taking a very well-deserved day off. We rarely let him out of the studio. And, yes, he does have an ankle bracelet on. He can’t go very far legally.
SPEAKER 06 :
I understand why he likes it. It’s cozy back here behind the glass.
SPEAKER 04 :
It is cozy back there behind the glass. But, you know, we do let Charlie go. What has he got, about a two-mile radius? How far are we? I’m not sure.
SPEAKER 06 :
I think a little less than that. I think we bumped him down to a mile and a half.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, because, you know, we just don’t let – he hasn’t done anything wrong. We just don’t want him to have any freedom. Speaking about freedom, RFK, as you know, does believe in freedom. He was grilled on Capitol Hill yesterday. I just want to spend a moment on this because I was angry. I listened to some of the clips, as I think a lot of people did, and you have all these… People in the Senate grilling him, grilling him and attacking him and saying that, you know, you and your followers, they’re all conspiracy theorists and they’re all quacks and they’re not real doctors and all this. It’s like, folks, people on both sides of the issue and a lot of this is vaccines, but there are other things to people. People on both sides of the issue have degrees. They’re real doctors, okay? They really studied. They look at real evidence. Both sides look at real evidence, okay? And this idea that RFK is backed by a bunch of quacks is really insulting, especially since I happen to agree with a lot of what he says. But here’s what really gets me. And he pointed this out. Pretty much everybody up there, but especially the Democrats to a much greater degree, are receiving money from Big Pharma.
SPEAKER 09 :
Right.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, now Tanner, you tell me. During COVID, how much money did Big Pharma make during COVID?
SPEAKER 10 :
More than they ever have.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. Basically, they brought in more than most countries do in a year.
SPEAKER 10 :
If not more, depending on the country.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. And so Big Pharma has unbelievable, unlimited sums of money. What I’m getting to is this, folks. When you were watching the grilling that RFK got on the Hill yesterday, he was getting that grilling. From people, because he is seen as an enemy of Big Pharma.
SPEAKER 09 :
Right.
SPEAKER 04 :
And he isn’t really, but he does want to hold back some of what they’re doing. I guess what he wants to say is this. Look, before you unleash things on the American public, I want those things grilled. Okay. And he is seen as an enemy of Big Pharma. So meanwhile, this big panel in front of him are a bunch of people who are owned by, Right. By Big Pharma. He was talking about what’s her name? Pocahontas. Pocahontas getting eight hundred and fifty five thousand dollars a year from Big Pharma. OK, it’s incredible. But all of them, you look at Bernie, he’s got tons of money coming in from Big Pharma. And here’s here’s what we’re getting to, folks. When you are one of these senators up there and you are getting this kind of money from Big Pharma, your words aren’t your own.
SPEAKER 10 :
Right. Well, in my opinion, you shouldn’t even be allowed to have a seat if you’re getting all this outside money coming in.
SPEAKER 04 :
So what you’re saying is that there should be some sort of recusal.
SPEAKER 10 :
I mean, at least if you’re getting money from a company that is, I mean, the discussion or the topic of discussion, you shouldn’t be allowed to be on just like a juror. If a juror, you know, I had a father that died in a vehicle accident, and that’s what the case is about, they usually excuse him or something along those lines. I think that should be the same with the Senate, but obviously it’s not.
SPEAKER 04 :
Obviously, it’s not… You know, at the very least, let me get kind of a middle ground here, okay? Because, look, I’m not against big companies being able to pour money into candidates and politicians who back their beliefs, who back what they’re selling, who help themselves. Big oil, okay? I’m a huge supporter of big oil. I hate green energy, hate it with a passion. I believe it all needs to go, okay? But just because… I’m sorry, the bang for the buck. It isn’t there, okay? And… If big oil wants to give to a politician, I think that’s an awesome thing. But here’s the thing. We can grill big oil on what they do. We can look at, okay, how much money does it take going into what you do to produce how much energy? And, of course, what will be the environmental impact? consequence of that we can we can lead everything they do but with what happened with big pharma a lot of it was hidden behind the scenes why because they own congress and what did congress do congress shut down any look into big pharma i’m not against big pharma i think they do a lot of fantastic things i think they you know look american big pharma has created drugs and treatments that are the envy of the world They have. They’ve also made some big mistakes.
SPEAKER 10 :
A lot. And you see with the amount of money they’ve given in settlements. Thank you. They’ve never really gone to court.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. Huge money in settlements. Here’s what I’m getting to. All RFK is looking for is he’s saying, I want new eyes, fresh eyes, looking at all the evidence either way. And the thing that bothered me the most, and I’ll be done here. The thing that bothered me the most that I saw from all these senators who are attacking, attacking, attacking is this. They were calling him a kook. They were calling him a quack or his followers, whatever. And they were saying all these negative things about him. By the way, everything he predicted during COVID regarding the vaccine and masks and distancing all was right. Okay, he got it all right, guys. You guys got it wrong. I’m sorry, but you got it wrong. He got it right. You know, later this hour, you and I are going to be doing NFL picks. What if one of us got them all right every week? Wouldn’t you have a pretty good track record?
SPEAKER 10 :
You better go to the casino, get a DraftKings account, something.
SPEAKER 04 :
Go to Blackhawk. That’s my advice, if you’re always right. But he has been right far more than them, and yet they’re whining. Here’s what I didn’t like. Not once did any of them bring forward a study and say, this is what shows. Here’s the evidence. Here is the methods used. Here’s what shows you are wrong. Not once. All they did was name call and say, you’re quacks, you’re this, you’re that, which the left always does.
SPEAKER 10 :
You don’t know what you’re talking about.
SPEAKER 04 :
You’re not professional. You’re not professional and all this. So you had this row of people who are totally bought and paid for by Big Pharma, the people he is a threat to. He’s a threat to Big Pharma. Big Pharma owns these people. Now, they have the right. They have the right to put money into candidates. I’m fine with that. Here’s what I would like to see. I would like every single one of them to have to admit before they start their questions. You can do your questions. But before you do, how much money did you get from Big Pharma?
SPEAKER 09 :
Right.
SPEAKER 04 :
That doesn’t mean that your words are not true. But I think people have the right to know how much. Have these companies put into your coffers before you get to tear into the guy who is a threat to them? Go ahead.
SPEAKER 10 :
I think it was RFK, but there was one time when Bernie Sanders and I think Elizabeth Warren were up there, and I can’t remember who it was, but they asked him straight up, how much money do you get from Big Pharma? And they said, I don’t get any. And then the guy brings up, well, I have a list, Bernie. You’ve made $1.2 million every year from Big Pharma. And then they just deny, deny, deny.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. And it’s like, I thought you took an oath, but… So not only do they not announce, because you’re saying they’re conflicted. They shouldn’t even be able to be out there. 100%, in my opinion. Okay, yeah, they should have to recuse themselves. And I’m saying, well, first of all, they won’t do that. In Senate rules, they’re allowed to speak on these things. So I’m saying, okay, here’s the middle ground. How about they at least have to admit… how much money they’ve gotten from these companies, because they go up there and levy all these accusations against him, and they give nothing to back it up. They didn’t say one single thing, one study, one piece of evidence, one factoid, nothing to back it up. All they did was attack him and call his followers a bunch of kooks and quacks. That angers me, especially when the lives of our children are at stake here. Autism is through the roof. Obesity is through the roof. We’ve got all kinds of physical problems through the roof in America. And all he’s saying is, I want to take a look at it.
SPEAKER 10 :
And we, out of any country in the world, I’m pretty sure we have the most required vaccines by about, I want to say it was at least eight vaccines. But all you have to do is go and watch some of these movies like Pain Hustlers with Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Andy Garcia.
SPEAKER 04 :
And they’re a bunch of lefties.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, I mean. And even they admit it. Exactly. The pharmaceutical companies get away with everything and they ruin some people’s lives. They accidentally kill some people and they’re never held accountable. And it’s kind of unfortunate. Plus, some of these vaccines or medicine, whatever it may be, is way overpriced.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, let me tell you this. And I think we can sum up everything RFK is trying to do with these simple words. We want to take another look. That’s it. We want to take another look. Hey, before we pump all these vaccines into our kids far more than any other country. Right. We’ve tripled the number of vaccines they got to have in the last like 30 years or 20 years or so. I forget how many years, but we’ve tripled it. We put so many shots in our kids. And he’s saying, guys, before we do that. especially with kids who have incredible immune systems. All right. I want to take another look. Right. And not with your eyes, not with the eyes of your approved people who are all approved by the pharmaceutical companies. I want people who are not approved by the pharmaceutical companies to take a look at it, too.
SPEAKER 09 :
Right.
SPEAKER 04 :
And I want to hear from the big pharma, too. I want to hear from both sides. OK, but we’ve only heard from one side for decades now. He’s breaking that. They don’t like it. I do.
SPEAKER 10 :
I 100% agree.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right. Let’s take a break. When we come back, we’re going to do some movies. Are you ready for that?
SPEAKER 10 :
I’m ready.

Buddy, you know, we’ve known each other a while. Can I ask you something personal? Sure, sure. Luke, are you ready for a movie? I am always ready.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right. Well, Luke, Austin Butler, have you heard of him?
SPEAKER 06 :
Maybe. I don’t think so. It’s not ringing a bell.
SPEAKER 04 :
We’ll talk about this later, but I have been campaigning for him to be the next James Bond.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
I have. Okay. Austin Butler, he’s a rising star, but can he lead in a comedy action thriller? Let’s see in Caught Stealing. It’s the last call. Drink them if you got them.
SPEAKER 12 :
Let’s go back to your place so you can take advantage of my poor judgment. I depend on your poor judgment. I want to know if I can take this seriously. What do you need to take us seriously? Come on, kids. Get in the room. Sorry, Miss Kitty.
SPEAKER 1 :
Oi!
SPEAKER 12 :
What are you doing, geezer? Is that the best you can do? I’ve got to fly back to London. I need you to take care of my cat. I like cats. I like dogs. Hey! Is Russ home? Who are you? Ah, what’s the big one, mate?
SPEAKER 05 :
Who did this to you? La pistola. Either I get what I want or my pistol. Talk for me.
SPEAKER 15 :
These guys you messed up with, they’re scary monsters.
SPEAKER 20 :
I don’t know anything. What did you get me into? Welcome to Narnia. How much is there?
SPEAKER 12 :
Over four million. Everyone gets a cup. The Russians, the Puerto Ricans, the Hebrews. What are you doing? So what happens to me? Sorry, mate. You run away from what you’re afraid of, then it owns you. Buckle your seatbelts. You’re just
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, what do you think there, Luke? Sound good? I think it sounds kind of cool.
SPEAKER 06 :
They picked a good song.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. I’m kind of hyped. Exactly. There you go. Okay, Austin Butler, he stars as Hank, a one-time baseball player who was headed for the big leagues before getting injured in a car crash. Now he attends a New York bar and has a happy relationship with his girlfriend, Yvonne. She’s played by Zoe Kravitz. Do you like her? Anybody?
SPEAKER 06 :
What’s she in?
SPEAKER 10 :
The Batman.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, the Batman.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, I like her.
SPEAKER 04 :
But I forgive her.
SPEAKER 06 :
It’s a good movie.
SPEAKER 04 :
Ah, you’re so harsh. Okay, anyway, but I like her. And he loves the San Francisco Giants. That’s kind of cool. But then Hank’s punk rock friend, Russ, he has to leave town for a few days to see his dad. So he asks Hank to watch his cat while he’s gone. At Yvonne’s insistence, Hank agrees. But soon, Hank is cornered by mob members outside his apartment, and they want to know where Russ is. Where did Russ go? Well, Hank has no idea what’s going on, so they pummel him. Hank wakes up in a hospital with Yvonne at his side. By the way, she’s a paramedic. I like that. And he’s in bad shape and will even have to make some life changes. Now, one of these is that he has to give up drinking alcohol. This is a real problem. Why? He’s a lush. Hank is a full-on alcoholic. And so for him to give up alcohol is going to be really tough. Meanwhile, there’s still the issue of mobsters wanting information. And Hank has to figure out why. The cops are demanding answers, too. They’re led by a woman named Roman, played by Regina King. Now, she’s a very good actress. Trust me on this. She warns Hank about all the gangsters who are after whatever Russ had. Even the Jewish mob is involved. Now, that’s weird.
SPEAKER 1 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 04 :
You’ve seen the previous.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay. So even the Jewish mob is involved with two Jewish hitmen tailing Hank and battling the original mobsters, too. So now we have a turf war with two killing gangs and the cops and Hank. in the middle with his girlfriend and cat. Weird, huh? Can Hank survive when everyone is against him? Can he keep his loved ones safe? That’s very important, including his mom, by the way. And can the Giants win the pennant? It’s very important. Nope. It’s hope against hopeless in caught stealing. Luke, what do you think?
SPEAKER 06 :
I think it sounds kind of fun. It sounds like a good ride. I thought so, too. I feel like I’ve seen this movie before.
SPEAKER 04 :
Probably many times.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, well, what works in caught stealing? First of all, I’m going to say it, guys. Austin Butler is a superstar. It is time to accept it. He’s a great actor. He’s a super hunk. And he’s equally adept at drama, action, and humor. There’s simply no limit to what this young actor can become. I mean it. Austin Butler has no ceiling. I agree. He’s like that new draft pick. You take number one in the draft because there is no upper ceiling. He can do anything.
SPEAKER 10 :
Abdul Carter.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, he’s Abdul Carter, okay? Only in acting form. He’s great. And he’s terrific in this as well. The runtime is a fairly lean 1.47. I like that. Hour and 47. But it contains lots of twists and turns, so it keeps you involved. You never know what’s coming next, which is good. I like that. I don’t like predictable kind of action thrillers. I don’t want one that just feels like every other one.
SPEAKER 10 :
When I watch action movies now, I try to predict what’s going to happen to see if I could write a movie nowadays because Hollywood’s so poor at it.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yes, and I got news for you. I do that kind of too, and when I can do it, I don’t like it.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, I’m about 85% most of the time.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, that’s not good. Next, Regina King is an excellent actress, and she brings a lot to the cop, Roman. She brings a lot to that role, and I liked it. I just like her style. Now we get two terrific side performances from Liev Schreiber and Vincent D’Onofrio. I love both those guys. They’re the two Jewish hitmen. Liev is great. Oh, he’s terrific. And they bring humor with violence. I like that. And finally, the final third of this film really intensifies, bringing lots of strategy and action. All right. That’s what works in this. What doesn’t work in Caught Stealing? Well, it’s far too depressing for most of the run time. Really, it’s a downer. None of the characters are really likable, especially early on, except maybe a guy living down the hall. I liked him. There’s far too little humor. Now, when you see the preview, you think this is going to be a funnier film. It isn’t that funny. There’s too little humor in a film that could have had much more. All right? This is like Midnight Run without 80% of the jokes. Okay. It’s just Pulp Fiction. You ever see that?
SPEAKER 10 :
Love Pulp Fiction.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay. Imagine Pulp Fiction now kill 80% of the jokes. See what I’m saying? Yeah. You know, basically, I don’t know. It’s just basically tell Samuel Jackson he can’t talk. Okay. And then you got this movie. The middle third just seems like drudgery to me. There’s too much time spent on the Jewish culture, which I find interesting. Don’t get me wrong, but of course I do. I have a degree in the ministry. That’s me. That’s not the audience. All right. It kind of loses people very quickly. There’s an idiotic political jab at Rudy Giuliani at the beginning. This is set back when he was mayor of New York. OK, so it’s set back at that time. Thankfully, though, there were no politics after that. Thank goodness, man. Just just do the movie, whatever. I don’t want you to take jabs at the left either. Just do the movie. Um, several times characters make pretty improbable decisions. They really do. One guy opens the door to charge the bad guys when it’s certain he’s going to get shot. They’re all sitting there with guns on the other side of the door. He knows they’re sitting there with guns on the other side of the door. He opens the door with a gun. You know, come on. And there are moments like that when you’re just like, no human being would do this. OK. In fact, I don’t know any species that would be that stupid. All right. And so it was totally implausible. And there were actually three or four times during this movie where the characters do things so stupid that you’re just like, no. Okay, there’s another one where a guy gets out of a car and starts rushing people with guns. It’s like, no, you’re not going to do that. Okay, it doesn’t make any sense. And so that kind of kills a little of the believability. And a lot of this movie is that it’s raw and believable.
SPEAKER 09 :
Right.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right? So you’ve got to keep it believable. Don’t mess with it. Okay, Rotten Tomatoes gave caught stealing 84%. Wow. Very good score. Okay, the audience score was also about 84, 85. You know, it bounces around about the same. Right. For quality, I’m going to give it three stars. And I would have gone higher if it were funnier. But when you’ve got these kind of actors, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, when you’ve got so many good actors, you’ve got to make it funnier, man. I mean, you’ve got to bring some more jokes, some more gags to keep it going because this got really depressing for quite a while. I can handle a depressing movie, but that’s not what you sold me.
SPEAKER 09 :
Right.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay. You sell me chocolate, don’t give me, you know. Poop. Yeah. Okay. So I’m going to give it three stars. Not a bad movie. Pretty good movie, but it fell apart here and there. Political, I’m going to give it two and a half. Just a smidge down for a stupid little comment. More religious, obviously a two. I could have gone lower, but come on. It’s the genre. What are you expecting to see, a Jesus movie? I mean, come on. Right. You’re making Caught Stealing. It is what it is. Overall, do I recommend you go to Caught Stealing? Look, folks, it’s the end of summer. This isn’t the beginning of summer. Okay, so you’re generally not going to see the best of the best of the best, but I will tell you this. It’s not a bad movie. If you want this kind of movie, and if you want to see yet another great performance from, I think, the hottest young star coming up today, Austin Butler, go see Caught Stealing. It’s worth your time. It’s not a bad night at the movie. Sound good?
SPEAKER 10 :
Sounds good.

SPEAKER 1 :
100%.
SPEAKER 04 :
Exactly. You’ve met Dave, though, right?
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, he’s my client. Love him.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, he’s totally… Great guy. Great guy. Well, Dave works by appointment, so call Mile High Coin at 720-370-3400.
SPEAKER 17 :
David Gonzales here, owner of Mile High Coin Brokerage and Consulting. Whether it’s a Rolex, Cartier, Breitling, or any other high-end watch, we’ll help you determine its value and the best way to go about liquidating it. We also work with mid-range watches and vintage pocket watches. High-end timepieces can be complicated, and that’s why we have a team of experts who can help authenticate your watch and give you a clear picture of its worth. While the watch market has been volatile in recent years, some makes and models have not only held their value, but have significantly increased in worth. Schedule an appointment to have your watch reviewed. Just visit milehighcoin.com and complete our contact form. We look forward to seeing your timepiece.
SPEAKER 19 :
The best export we have is common sense. You’re listening to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 04 :
And welcome back to Rush to Reason. Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Andy Pate filling in for John Rush along with Luke Cash. Man. And Tanner Cole. Man. And Tanner, I got a question for you, buddy. What’s going on? Are you ready for a movie? I’m ready for a movie. Okay, Tanner. Ed and Lorraine are back for more scares in The Conjuring Last Rites.
SPEAKER 08 :
The devil has come to Pennsylvania.
SPEAKER 12 :
Jack and Janet’s evil presence has found its way into their home.
SPEAKER 11 :
Eight people live in this house. Eight people have experienced this. Eight people are not crazy.
SPEAKER 06 :
So, when did this start?
SPEAKER 01 :
Heather’s confirmation. There’s something.
SPEAKER 05 :
There’s an evil here. Something I’ve felt before. This thing in your house is a demon. It’s the first one that we ever encountered. We were young. We were scared. We ran away.
SPEAKER 10 :
after well are you afraid yeah I can hear Tanner shivering my whole body is like tense just watching Tanner doesn’t like you don’t like scary movies I like you’re like John Rush I’ll take thriller anything on the thriller side like Midsommar is about as far as I will go as scary okay what about you Luke
SPEAKER 06 :
I adore scary movies so much so that I struggle to find good ones.
SPEAKER 10 :
He has them on loop in his house.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, there you go. Then this is more for Luke, but Tanner, it’s still for you. Here we go. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson. You guys know them, right?
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, great. Yes.
SPEAKER 04 :
Terrific actors. They return as Ed and Lorraine Warren, a real-life couple known for going to haunted houses and battling evil spirits. At this point, Ed’s health, well, it’s failing. From too many close encounters, and Lorraine wants their ghost hunting to end. It’s time to retire. There’s also the issue of their daughter, Judy. Daughter Judy. You don’t know the Jetsons. Never mind. After a scary childbirth, they raised her while enduring all their terrifying investigations. Well, naturally, they don’t want that life for her. That makes sense, right?
SPEAKER 07 :
Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. Well, there’s a problem, though. She has mom’s gift. Now, what gift is that? Well, Lorraine can sense the ghosts and spirits and she sees visions. This helps her battle them. Right. Well, Lorraine, unfortunately, has passed this gift along to Judy. She has the same gift. Meanwhile, another family, they’re called the Smurls. By the way, they really existed. Okay, this is a real family. So this is semi-historical, right? With a lot of Hollywood mixed in. Well, they’ve been given a mirror. No big deal, right? Well, it’s creepy looking. But much worse, this mirror brings terrible visions and accidents to their family. Their home is now clearly haunted, putting them in real danger. Well, as good Catholics, they reach out to the church, but are pretty much stonewalled. Only one priest approaches to help. His name is Father Gordon. He’s been in a lot of these movies. He’s worked with the Warrens before. Well, Father Gordon can quickly see there are evil spirits haunting the Smurls. And he believes their only hope is help from the Warrens. He just needs to get church approval. But there’s a real problem. He’s got to get into the higher ups and get that. And it isn’t going so well. I’ll just say that. Don’t want to give away any more. Well, finally. There is one more storyline. Judy Warren is in love. The young man’s name is Tony, and he’s a good guy who also supports what the Warrens have done in life. So everything is coming to a head. The Warrens want Judy out of that life, but she’s far too gifted and tormented for that to happen. A new family desperately needs their help, but Ed needs to retire. And can the new guy help? Is Tony going to be important to the team? We think he is. In this long-anticipated send-off, because it has been, the people who love this movie, it was packed last night. We get all the answers in The Conjuring Last Rites. What do you think?
SPEAKER 10 :
I’m not going to see it. I’m not even going to watch the preview again.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, couldn’t you go and just cry in the corner? I did that for… You would probably cry during the previews of other scary movies.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, I cried in A Fault in Our Stars, and I was the only dude in the whole theater, so I don’t think a scary movie will help me.
SPEAKER 06 :
I don’t think so. Don’t you think your girlish screams would add to the ambiance for everyone else?
SPEAKER 04 :
I think they do.
SPEAKER 06 :
It’s a public service.
SPEAKER 04 :
I mean, he just screams at such a high pitch. You know what? Actually, you don’t want to be wearing glasses.
SPEAKER 06 :
No, it’s a danger.
SPEAKER 04 :
Because you’ll shatter them with your high, girly…
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
You know where I’m going with that.
SPEAKER 10 :
The Conjuring, whatever the creature, the demon would steal him off my face.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, it wouldn’t be too good. Okay, what works in The Conjuring last rights? Here we go. Excellent acting all around. Farmajohn Wilson, they’re both underrated actors.
SPEAKER 10 :
Wilson’s great.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, he always is. And their chemistry is magic. Mia Tomlinson, she’s new on the scene. And Ben Hardy, they’re welcome additions as Judy and Tony. They do a great job. And all the Smurl family members convey normal family struggles, you know, like teenagers bickering, limited finances. They convey that with shock at the terrorists that they witness. Now, this is important because you got teenagers, but you also got smaller kids around eight or nine. And a lot of times they’re not going to be very good actors. They are. They pull it off. They do a great job. They scream just like just like you, Tanner. All right. Just like you. And it was so realistic. Let’s see here. It does a good job setting up new characters while honoring the old ones. I like this. So what you’ve got here is a real send off for Ed and Lorraine. Well, I think it’s a real launch for the young ones. All right. I could really see this going forward with them. You got good special effects bringing the horror with lighting, CGI, makeup, all of it. So, you know, all the kind of normal things you would expect with a horror movie. And also you have a fairly engrossing story. We really care about the characters. It’s not just a scare fest on a lot of these scare movies. you don’t have a great story to go with them it’s scarier when you got a really good story too that’s when it’s much better all right what doesn’t work in the conjuring last rights well first of all there was too much of the same old same old that you see in a lot of the modern things you know ever since the ring did you see the ring yes forever ago okay have you noticed ever since the ring everything looks like the ring
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, it did kind of set up an aesthetic.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yes, it did. And so now you’re kind of seeing that aesthetic through every one of these horror movies. You have a lot of it in this one, too. Next, it’s too long at 2 hours and 15 minutes. This is their send-off, right? So they’re going to put everything into it. You don’t want that. They tried to do a little too much with too many storylines. It’s hard to maintain horror when you’re wrapping this up, introducing these people, wrapping that up and, you know, all these kind of storylines. You’re trying to maintain horror here. I mean, you really want this to be centered around the scares. And they didn’t do enough of that, in my opinion. Some of the church aspects, though important to the war in history, they slowed it down. And you would think me, well, Andy’s a church guy, right? He’d really like that. Yeah, but you know what? I thought it was slowing down the movie. I was kind of like, you know, why don’t you just move? We already know they’re good Catholics and priests help them and all this. Why don’t you just move on to the next scene and get it going? We’ve already set that up in past movies. Next. Ironically… This could have used more humor to break it up. Now, you guys know as well as I do, Patrick Wilson is a funny guy.
SPEAKER 10 :
Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, he can bring it. So is Vera. They are very funny actors, and funny and scary works well together. It breaks it up. It moves it along. And it also kind of makes the scary come out of nowhere more, right? When you loosen people up with a joke or two, then the scary hits, it’s better. And they could have done that, and they really didn’t. But it’s unfortunate because you had the actors to pull it off. All right. Rotten Tomatoes was not in love with this movie. They gave it 53%. So The Conjuring Last Rites got 53%. But the crowds, now keep in mind, it’s going to be people who are fans of the show, right? So they’re going to grade it up. They gave it 78%. So you would think that I would probably come in at about two, two and a half stars. I’m not. I’m actually coming in quality at three and a half stars. I thought this was a good, solid movie. I thought, yeah, it dragged a bit as they were putting a bit too much in. But I thought this was a really good send off for the two main characters. I thought it was very touching. And yet it kept you involved in the main story of that family that was being haunted. And it introduced new characters. What they did is they covered a lot of ground and they did it very artfully. They moved through it. I didn’t feel like I was being sent off in too many tangents and couldn’t get into the story, which I was worried of. But I was into the story. I was into the characters. I wanted to see more. I enjoyed it. And I enjoy the new characters. I enjoy their daughter. And I enjoy Tony. And I like what’s going to come next with them if it does. I’m just assuming they will. So I’m going to give this three and a half stars. I thought it was a very good little horror flick. Yeah, you’re seeing stuff you’ve seen before. Everything’s been the same since The Ring. But it was good. Okay, political three. Moral religious three. Within the genre of the movie, obviously. This didn’t have anything that really offended me in any way. I was fine with it. So there you go. You’re going to go see a movie that you’re not being preached at. Do I recommend that you go to The Conjuring Last Rites? Well, obviously not if you’re Tanner and scream like a little girl because that’ll scare people next to you. And they paid money for this movie. All right. So don’t do that. But in general, if you like a scare, I will say this on the scarometer. And John kind of wants me to do this. Right. So on a scale of one to five on the scarometer, where is this? Oh, it’s about a three for us for a scary movie. It’s about a three. I mean, there are movies that are much scarier. I still think fall is the scariest one I’ve ever seen, but it is scary enough that. Do I recommend you go to this movie? Yes, I do. First of all, if you like the characters, you’re going to want to see it wrapped up. And secondly, I think you’re going to see a pretty good movie with a good story, and you’re going to enjoy it, and you will be engrossed, and it’s worth your time out. If you are not into scary movies, though, don’t go see The Conjuring of any kind, much less Last Rite. Sound good?
SPEAKER 10 :
Sounds good.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right. Let’s take a break. When we come back, we are going to do what?
SPEAKER 10 :

Now back to Rush to Reason on KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 04 :
And welcome back to Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560, Andy Pate filling in for John Rush, along with Tanner Cole and Luke Cash. Now, Luke, of course, is also handling Charlie’s duties, and Luke has requested to be called the talent. So I guess we will refer to him. And he also makes his girlfriend refer to him that way, which is rather unsettling. Okay, it is time for NFL picks. Are you ready?
SPEAKER 10 :
I’m ready.
SPEAKER 04 :
Cue that music, Luke. Okay, that’s good. All right, Tanner. We’re going to start out, and I know this one’s emotional for you tonight. The Kansas City Chiefs, they are favored by three and a half. They are at your L.A. Chargers. We’ve got Patrick Mahomes and Kelsey versus Herbert and McConkie. Here’s a big question for me. Can the Chargers change Taylor Swift’s mind about, you know, marrying Travis Kelsey? Can they ruin this by showing her that he is not even a real man? Can they pummel this man into the ground? And put her back on the market.
SPEAKER 10 :
I think Travis is actually going to have a big game just because he seems to always have a big game against us. However, our quarterback is now dating Madison Beer, who in my opinion is way better looking than Taylor Swift.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, there you go, man.
SPEAKER 10 :
However, we have no Rashawn Slater, our left tackle. Paid him $100 million. Of course, he goes down immediately. Chiefs have two new offensive tackles. The game is in Brazil. For some reason, I think with the humidity down there, I think that just favors the Chiefs.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, you know what? I’m going to go with you. So we’re both taking the Chiefs because I don’t think it’s fair. I don’t like this whole thing where it’s called your home game. Yeah, we lose a home game. But it’s overseas.
SPEAKER 10 :
And it’s 12,000 miles away from L.A.
SPEAKER 04 :
And by the way, you know how I wanted to do this? Really quick here. We’ll take a moment. I wanted there to be four overseas cities that get four games a year. So in that city, they get four games during the year where they see NFL teams. Okay, that’s 16 games, so all 32 teams, right?
SPEAKER 09 :
Right.
SPEAKER 04 :
And then what you do is have everybody have a home game and balance it out, and everybody has a road game.
SPEAKER 10 :
Right. I like that.
SPEAKER 04 :
What do you think? Okay, up next is Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They are favored by one and a half. They’re on the road at the Atlanta Falcons. You’ve got Baker Mayfield. By the way, he’s got a trio to throw to. You’ve got Evans. You’ve got Godwin. You’ve got Egbuka, the rookie, who is very good out of Ohio State. And they are going up against Michael Penix. I know, but he’s very talented, so you don’t know it’ll show up. And he’s got three to throw, too. London, Mooney, and Pitts. That great tight end, Kyle Pitts. And Bijan. And Bijan out of the backfield. So, what do you think? I mean, is Tampa going to go in there and take it away, or are the Falcons going to shock them?
SPEAKER 10 :
Tampa will not have Godwin or Jalen McMillan, so it will be Emeka Egbuka and Mike Evans are the main guys he’s going to.
SPEAKER 04 :
Still good, but not great.
SPEAKER 10 :
Right. I am not sold on Pennix yet, so I have the Buccaneers, and I like the one-and-a-half.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yep, so do I. I think the Buccaneers are going to be a little too much for Atlanta. All right. Up next is Cincinnati Bengals. They are on the road. They’re favored by five and a half against the lowly Browns of Cleveland. My gosh. You know, wouldn’t Ohio be okay with just one team? I’m just saying. But here we go. Joe Burrow, he of course has Jamar Chase, Higgins, and Jacecki, and he gets to go up against Joe Flacco. But they got Miles Garrett on defense, so can Cleveland.
SPEAKER 10 :
And Mason Graham.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. Can Cleveland upset the Bengals?
SPEAKER 10 :
I think this might be the most one-sided betting game of the weekend, and I think everyone’s going to be on the Bengals. Granted, the Bengals lost last year in the opener to the Patriots and kind of threw their season awry. So they have to go and win this game. I think Burrow’s just better than a 40-year-old Joe Flacco, plus the Browns don’t have Judkins because he hasn’t signed his contract yet.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, I think the Bengals mow them down, but there’s a game later that’s a much bigger blowout, I think, and it’s happening with Denver. Okay, the Dolphins are on the road at the Colts. Colts favored by one and a half. You got Tua, you got Tyreek, you got Waddle. By the way, on defense, you got Chop Robinson and Bradley Chubb on each side.
SPEAKER 10 :
Jalen Phillips.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, the Dolphins got a few players here. They’re going up against Daniel Jones, but he’s got Jonathan Taylor to hand off to. Can the Colts beat the Dolphins?
SPEAKER 10 :
I was shocked to even see the Colts were favored. The problem with Miami is they don’t have any corners. Their starting corner is like Storm Duck. So that’s all you need to know. Yeah, and some other, a few other guys, they trade Ramsey for Minka. I still am going to take Miami.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, are you really?
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Geez, four in a row we’re doing the same because I’m taking Miami too. All right, maybe we’ll disagree on the next one. No, probably not. It is the… Las Vegas Raiders. They are on the road at the New England Patriots. Patriots favored by just two and a half at home. The Raiders, it’s going to be fun to watch. Do you know, Smith? They got Ashton Gentry at running back, who’s exciting. They got Brock Bowers at tight end. They’re going up against Drake May, Stephon Diggs, Hunter Henry, who you know from your team. What do you think? Do the Patriots just walk away with this, or do the Raiders give them a game? I mean, Ashton Gentry…
SPEAKER 10 :
I have Ashton Genting in two fantasy leagues, and he’s my favorite NFL player already just because of what he did at Boise State. Even though Boise State laid basically an egg last week in our opener, I am taking the Raiders, and Genting goes crazy.
SPEAKER 04 :
Whoa! I’m going to take the Patriots. I think their defense is going to stifle. Ashton Gentry. Sorry about that. Okay, up next, we’ve got the Arizona Cardinals favored by 6.5 at the Saints. Let’s do these. We’ve got to go rapid fire, okay? The Cardinals got Kyler Murray, Marvin Harrison. The Saints got Spencer Rattler, Chris Alave. Okay, should the Saints show up?
SPEAKER 10 :
I’m taking the Cardinals. I want Kellen Moore to do well since he’s a Boise State alum as well, but Cardinals are winning.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, rapid fire. Steelers, led by Aaron Rodgers, are favored by two and a half with the Jets. What do you say?
SPEAKER 10 :
It’s a revenge game for both quarterbacks. I took the Jets, though.
SPEAKER 04 :
You’re taking the Jets. I’m going to take the Steelers. I like DJ Metcalf. Next game, the Giants. John and Cheyenne, his Giants, are on the road. The Commanders, Commanders favored by five and a half. Can Russell Wilson get the Giants to a win?
SPEAKER 10 :
I think it’ll be a one-score game, but I’m still taking the Commies.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, so am I. Okay, next game, the Panthers, who are terrible. They’re on the road at the Jaguars, who are favored by three and a half. Trevor Lawrence, I don’t know if he’s ever going to be great, but he is good. Do the Jags win?
SPEAKER 10 :
I am taking the Jags. I think they pull it out.
SPEAKER 04 :
So do I. Okay, here’s the blowout of the week. Of course, the Titans, they might be the worst team in the NFL. They’re coming to the Broncos. Cam Ward, who has nothing around him against Bo Nix and everything. This game is over.
SPEAKER 10 :
Calvin Ridley, Tony Pollard, Elick, Aya Nomar or something. But yeah, Broncos are winning.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, they’re going to kill them. Okay, next game. 49ers are favored by one and a half at the Seahawks, led by Purdy, McCaffrey, Pearsall. They’ve got a defense. What do you think?
SPEAKER 10 :
McCaffrey, they’ve been saying, has been having some problems. He has a calf injury now, and it’s hard to go up there and play in Seattle in division games, so I have Seattle winning. Oh, wow, so do I. They are 9-1 in home openers.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, we only got a minute left. The Lions are going to play my Packers. My Packers are actually favored by one and a half against the Lions. We now have Parsons, so we are the Parsons Project. What do you think?
SPEAKER 10 :
I am still going to take the Lions.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yes, so am I. I’m taking the Lions by 10. Next game, the Texans are at the Rams. Rams favored by 3.5. What do you say?
SPEAKER 10 :
I’m taking the Rams.
SPEAKER 04 :
I’m going to take the Texans on the road. I like the upset there. The Ravens favored by 1.5 going in against the Bills.
SPEAKER 10 :
Revenge game, I’m taking the Ravens.
SPEAKER 04 :
I am taking the Ravens as well. Last game, the Vikings are favored by one and a half going in against the Bears.
SPEAKER 10 :
I’m going to take the Vikings. Bears haven’t showed me enough still.
SPEAKER 04 :
I am going to take the Bears in an upset. Dan, I know you hate me up in Minnesota, but I’m sorry, but I think the Bears are going to be one of the surprise teams in the league. I think they are assembling a rather obscene amount of talent.
SPEAKER 10 :
Right. Young as well.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, my gosh. Do they have wide receivers? Okay, we did it. What do you think? Are you excited?
SPEAKER 10 :
Not for tonight, but for Sunday I am.
SPEAKER 04 :
You know what? Give your team a chance.
SPEAKER 10 :
I’m going to bet on the Chiefs, so it’s a win-win.
SPEAKER 04 :
You’re going to bet on the Chiefs. You know what? Hey, I’m doing the same thing, though. I’m picking the Lions to beat my Packers.
SPEAKER 10 :
There you go.
SPEAKER 04 :
Look, I think the Lions are the most talented team in the NFL, bar none.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, but losing two coordinators, we’ll see.
SPEAKER 04 :
Eh, players play. That players play. Okay, folks, that’s it for our number one. In our two, it’s movies we regret, movies to avoid. Folks, I know that you can help us out and tell some people some movies to avoid. Until then, keep it right here on Rush to Reason, KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 08 :
Bye. Bye.
