SPEAKER 11 :
Good afternoon, everybody. This is Phil Anderson in for John today. And this is a live show, October the 17th. And if you want to call in and or text in, the main line is 303-477-7000.
SPEAKER 09 :
5600 or text 307-200-8222. So last week we were on the topic of its fall and I know when I got it in the car this morning it was ice on the window. So yep here it is. It doesn’t matter whether we’re ready or not. It is that time. I think as far as I know it’s the first ice that I’ve experienced you know on the car in the morning. So we definitely have turn that corner and you know we have nice days it’s nice outside right now but have frost advisories already in effect for tonight depending where you live but here it is and so last week we were talking about things you can do to be ready for this season this transition of seasons in particular with your car and we could you know leave in the middle of the day let’s say at 10 o’clock and go about our business. And then, you know, by noon, three o’clock, we could see a 20 degree temperature swing, which is normal for Colorado. It’s happened. Very common. And all of a sudden it goes from a 60 degree day down to a 40 degree day. Maybe some rain comes. Maybe that rain turns to snow. Maybe it turns to ice. And now we’ve left the house. In our short sleeve shirt. And now we’re, you know, now we’re cold because it’s, you know, much colder outside. So we talked about having some things in your car and taking some time now to say, hey, this is a good time to make sure this is there. Spend maybe a half an hour or so going through your car. We had some great suggestions. One of the suggestions from last week was using the, you know, side compartments that you would get into for your lights and things. you know, to use those as storage places because, you know, real estate, meaning space within the car and how much can I store, what can I take, how much can I carry with me, you know, becomes an issue. If you have a smaller compact car, you know, you may not have the space for that. And one of the suggestions was to put these items in these spots. And the first thing I said to John, I actually texted him and I said, yeah, the problem is, is I forget they’re there. You know, I probably have stuff stored away in these nooks and crannies and hey, I forgot the stuff was there. And not only that, but I have stuff in plain sight and I forget it’s there. I’ll dig all over the place looking for something and it was right there the whole time. So, you know, take 30 minutes or so, whatever, go through your car, make sure all your stuff’s in working order. You know, in the military, we always performed what we call functions checks on our weapons. You know, functions check your system, functions check your prep, functions check, go through, make sure there’s batteries in those flashlights, make sure there’s you know, power charged to your, you know, your jump starter and your little inflators, make sure you got those gloves in there. Make sure a mouse didn’t get in there and, you know, chew up all your stuff, chew your spare socks and your shirts and things like that. So I kind of want to pick up a little bit or pick up where we left off and finish that topic. And then I got another topic that I want to finish the program out with. And so we talked about things like, you know, having candles for your car, having flares, either the LED style and or the, you know, the old traditional kind of light, having a jacket in your car, having some type of a water container carry device. We talked about having tow straps or a tow rope. We talked about having tie-down straps and I mentioned, you know, if you’re going to do that, get the high orange visibility ones because you can, you know, dual purpose that and maybe use it as a flag or an indicator tied on your antenna or on something. So if you’re calling for help, you know, you can say, hey, I’ve got, you know, an orange ribbon tied around my door handle or something just to help, you know, identify, you know, your car a little quicker if you need that. One thing that… we would like to continue on with this conversation is on that very topic is consider getting a safety vest and you can pick them up at Home Depot or whatever. They come in orange or I’ve seen them in yellow, but they’ve got the reflective kind of stripes on them. And you know, that’s good if you got to put that on, visibility’s low and you’re out there having to do something, dig out of your car with those foldable shovels we talked about last week. um maybe you’re out there and you’ve got that extra you know visibility because you know it’s a little harder to see it’s getting dark or it’s getting dusk out and yeah we like to change tires you know on an off ramp or somewhere where not you know even if we’ve got to drive on the rim for a little bit to get to a little safety you know safer spot you know that’s always a good idea but sometimes you can’t sometimes you’re stuck and you got to change that tire right there on the side of the road put your your flares out your led lights out throw that vest on It just helps people see you. And on a side note with that, if you do find yourself in the middle of a riot or an event or something happens and it’s chaotic, you throw that vest on and people associate you as part of the event. And you’ll be amazed that you can just walk right through, walk right across lines and barriers and all kinds of stuff just because you got that vest on. You look official. So there’s another dual purpose for that guy right there. One thing you can do is, you know, around this time of year, you can find deals on those hand warmers, those toe warmers, those little packet things that you can put in your gloves. I do have some that, you know, have the chargeable battery kind where you can, you know, recharge and the power pack is in a sock or in a glove, you know, you could do that. But again, with any of those things, you got to make sure that you have the ability to power them up. Because there’s nothing worse than thinking you’re all set, and you’re all good, and you pull that out, and oh, the battery’s dead. So you want to make sure that you have the availability to keep that charge, check on that, make sure it stays charged. So those little hand warmer things are great. They last forever. You can buy them in bulk, throw them in your glove box, and at least you’ve got something there that can provide you a little bit of warmth if you need it. The other thing we did not talk about is the jump starter, jumper cables. I like the jump boxes with the tire inflator. Now, you’re not going to inflate your tire very fast with one of those, but it could be something that you’re a little low or whatever, and you need to top it off. It takes a little bit of time. Yes, I understand that, but it’s better than nothing. And if you have the ability to pull a nail and use a plug kit, I think that’s something that everybody should know how to do is plug a nail as long as it’s not in the sidewall. And even if it’s in the sidewall, it could get you out of a pinch. It could get you somewhere else. Learn how to use that. And they make some now that are actually mechanical. And so, you know, you have to push those in really hard, those plugs. and reaming it out can take some strength there. But they have mechanical ones now, and you can have that in your kit. All these things are great ideas to save you, but consider this too. You can also now become a good Samaritan and help somebody else out if you want to. That’s really important. So you come out of the store, and somebody’s there with a flat tire or a you know, dead battery and you’re able to jump them and get them going, you know, great. I mean, I was at 7-Eleven fueling up and this guy had this really nice car. It was like a 1972 something. I don’t know. I do remember the year, but he had his hood up and I came by and I was, hey, everything okay? You know, this is a gas station. People have their hoods up for checking their oils or whatever, but he kind of looked at me and kind of waved and I said, you okay? He’s like, hey, could you give me a jump? And he told me, it’s like, you know, I was really surprised that you’re the only one that would help me. Everybody else just wouldn’t look at me, wouldn’t make eye contact, just drove right by. And, you know, it’s still okay to be a good person. It’s still okay to help people out. You know, there’s wisdom in that. You know, if you’re a female, I probably wouldn’t help a guy out, but that’s just using wisdom. You can’t trust everybody. Unfortunately, evil does exist. But, you know, you can be a good Samaritan, help out. John mentioned last week that having some snacks in the car, I’m kind of, I’m not too worried about snacks in the car because to be honest with you, pretty much every American’s probably got two to three days, if not a couple of weeks worth of groceries around their waistband. So you’re not going to starve to death if you don’t eat for a few hours or maybe in a few days. But what it does do is it helps with that mental state. It’s a comfort. And, you know, people think they’re starving to death and they’re not. Maybe their sugar gets a little low if you’re diabetic. This is a different conversation, by the way. But, you know, there’s something to be said about, hey, I’m in a stressful situation and I’m going to eat a granola bar or a Snickers bar or something with a little bit of sugar in there. And all of a sudden now my stressful situation is a little bit more manageable. So there is something to be said about that. But as far as like survival food in your car, you know, again, that real estate is pretty important. Kind of goes along the same lines around this time of year of water. You know, if you’re carrying water bottles around, it can be pretty hard to keep it from freezing. And then if you have a bottle frozen and it’s a block of ice that’s not much good to you, yeah, you can put it in your dashboard and you can heat it up. Yeah, yeah. I understand all that stuff, but That also takes other resources. Speaking of which, having a lighter, having a flashlight, all the basic stuff that we had, a boo-boo kit, band-aid kit, whatever you want to call it, trauma kit, accidents happen, things go through, body parts cause bleeding, you might need to turn a kit, you might need to pack a wound, you might need to do these things. One of the other things I would strongly suggest around this time of year is make sure you’ve got the windshield wiper fluid topped off in your car. and go ahead and check those wiper blades because, you know, we haven’t used them. Yeah, we’ve gotten some rain here and there, but maybe it’s time to go ahead and change those guys out. Check your tires. Make sure you’ve got plenty of tread on your tires. If you want to carry chains, great. They also make those nylon strap things that you can put around there. Kitty litter I mentioned last week, having a jug of that can sometimes get you out of the tight spot, especially with the wet, slushy snow that we tend to get during the fall and the spring. These things are all great. And if anybody else has any other ideas or wants to add to anything, you know, you can call or text in and we’ll talk about that. Charlie will get me and get my attention and let me know that someone’s on the line. Carry a couple pairs of gloves. I like to carry a lightweight pair of gloves and then a heavier pair of gloves and then I also can double stack those gloves. So if I have the lighter pair, it can serve as an under layer to the heavier pair. And I’ll usually buy a size bigger with the heavier pair. So I buy, let’s say, a really tight medium. I have to stretch out a medium with my hands. It should really be a large pair. But I like that really tight fit. Or they have those flexible gloves. You can pick them up, you know, Home Depot, whatever. You can buy them in bulk usually. I don’t know what they’re called. They’re not like the dentist gloves or the medical gloves. They’re worker gloves. I usually use those a lot. And, you know, they kind of flex and stretch to the shape of your hand, but they make a great under layer. And then you can put that heavier glove on top and you can put that hand warmer in between the layers if you want. You do have to be careful with the hand warmers because your body temperature will regulate based on the palm of your hand and the bottom of your feet. And so if I’m putting that hand warmer in the palm of my hand, it’s going to heat my body up, which is what we want. But you’ve got to be careful that you don’t keep it there too long, that now you’re overheating. And so that’s something else you’ve got to really watch. And wintertime is a dangerous time where you can become dehydrated really easy and not realize it because you’re not as thirsty as you are in the heat of the summer. So you want to make sure that you’re drinking plenty, plenty of water during this time. So one thing… that I want to kind of sum up with this, this car preparation for the fall winter here is, you know, I do all my gun classes with this. I start every single cloth. I say, Hey, fill in the blank, right? Knowledge is here’s the blank. Knowledge is blank. And everybody shouts power. Knowledge is power. And I said, okay. And he says, you have a book. It’s at home on your bookshelf. Right. Is that telling you, you’re telling me that that’s power. What good is that going to do? Or you have so much information on your phone. Is that power? Well, yeah, sure. Because all I have to do is go read what the book tells me to do. And therefore I’m powerful. So I said, oh, you just answered the young question. So it’s not power. It’s potential power. But even at that, it’s not power. So what is real knowledge? Knowledge is information. You see the stuff we talk about on the radio show, or if you go to church and you hear something from church or you attend a seminar or you read a book or whatever it may be, that’s just information. Now, if you just take that information and put it on a shelf, does you no good? Sure. It’s potential. I could go back and I could read it. I could incorporate it into my life, but, but the information itself, but I’ve received it or put on a shelf or whatever, doesn’t really do anything. It’s not until I take that information and I apply it to something. And we call that experience. So I take the information and I go, okay, I’m going to try this. The information is plant this seed. Now, depending on where I’m at, whether I’m in Florida or whether I’m in Colorado, and depending whether it’s December in Colorado or September or July or April in Colorado, all of those have different outcomes. So the information just says take the seed and plant it. Great. Experience goes, hey, I can’t do that in December. I can’t do that in, you know, I can’t take an orange seed and plant it in Colorado. It doesn’t work. It may sprout, but it’s going to die. We don’t have the climate for it. So I take the information and then I test things out. And then I say, okay, I gain experience. Maybe you’ve got to tweak the information a little bit. Maybe you’ve got to adjust. But you go, oh, okay. I’ve applied the information. I’ve gained experience. That is knowledge. So knowledge is experience times information. Very important. So as we go through this stuff in our car, we go through it. Then we start to get reps in. And this is where the good Samaritan can help it, right? Because I got this jump kit and I go, somebody’s got dead battery and I pull out my jump kit and I’m like, huh, it doesn’t work. Or maybe that’s not a big enough amperage jump kit to jump a bigger car. Guess what I’m getting? Experience and I’m gaining knowledge. So getting the reps in, guys, is super important for us to do. Going through your stuff, functions check, looking in those nooks and crannies, you know, testing out my lighter and different various things, testing out hand warmers, playing around with, hey, can I cook, you know, can I make coffee in a parking lot? I do this a lot. I’ll make, you know, with my little camping gears or whatever. I got various different coffee makers, things like that. And yeah, I’m sitting in a Starbucks parking lot and I’m not buying Starbucks, but I’m making my own coffee. I’m getting a rep in. I’m getting experience going, okay, this works, this doesn’t work. Because in the time that I need it, that’s not the time to try to figure out what works and doesn’t work. Super important. So get the reps in. Get the experience in. You can’t control the variables, but you can gain understanding of what to do when a variable arises. I’ve seen this before. We’ve been doing electrical and HVAC work for a long time, and we still come across things that are brand new. We came across one just the other day, and I was talking to my son-in-law about it, and he’s like, out of the hundreds and thousands of furnaces that I’ve fixed and repaired, I have never seen that. And I said, okay, well, put it in your back pocket because now you’ve got that needle in that haystack, that unicorn that you can pull back from your experience, and now you’ve got knowledge. And now when you go into a similar situation, similar call, similar recovery shooting thing, you can go, hey, I remember that time that it was this. And now you can go check it. You see, guys, that’s knowledge. That’s knowledge. All right. So I’m going to talk about we’re going to change topics here. But I did want to wrap that one up so we can complete that, because I think it’s important to understand the time. So after the break, we are going to come back and we’re going to talk about a new thing. One of my favorite topics I mentioned on the radio all the time. And it’s a controversial topic. So stay tuned and we’ll come right back. 560 Kelsey.

can become extreme in situations. They can become extreme and caught up in the potentials of what the news is talking about, things of that nature. I mean, if you look at even like Y2K, you know, for many of us that remember that, how extreme that went and actually nothing happened. But there were a lot of people that were You know, going to the extremes of, you know, quitting jobs, selling houses, doing all kinds of crazy stuff because they were fully convinced that something was going to happen. And it wasn’t really within any of their control. So here’s what I want to talk about. What you can’t control and what you can. I’ve said this a lot here on the show with John. And I said, you know, there’s things that you can control in the world and there’s things that you can’t. And a lot of times we get hyper-focused on things that honestly, folks, you can’t control. And when I say that, a lot of people respond with, well, are you just telling us to ignore it? Are you just telling us to be lemmings and walk off the cliff? Are you telling us just to stick our head in the sand and ignore these things that it’s just, you know, what’s going to happen? And we just got to go along with the system. And I’m not saying that at all. I’m just saying it’s, that’s factual, that there’s things that are going to happen in this world that you cannot control. If a tornado comes down my street, I can’t control that. And what people will do is they’ll run outside and they’ll yell and scream and get all mad and, you know, get on the internet and have all kinds of conversation about how bad the tornado was and, you know, how wrong it was to come down their street. And you can’t control that. But if you live down tornado alley, you know, you should know that that’s what’s going to happen. And we are living in a time where we’re seeing things at rapid pace. We’re seeing the very world we live in change at a rapid pace. And maybe you’re not noticing it, but the crime’s up. The expression of the division is up. You know, I live in a very conservative county. And there’s people going around and all the political signs, all the Republican political signs, they’re spray painting swastikas all over them. You know, this is stuff that, you know, even honestly, a couple of years ago, never would have happened. It’s coming. It’s faster. The things that are happening are they’re getting bolder and they’re coming more quicker. And yeah, there’s nothing you can do about it. You have to understand that. So what can’t you control and what you can, we’re going to sum this up is you need to own your circle. And that’s what I will say, because that’s what you can control. In the book, the seven highly habits of the highly effective people. He says this, he says, proactive people focus their efforts in the circle of influence. Reactive people focus on the circle of concern. So I’ll say that again, proactive people focus, focus their efforts in the circle of influence, meaning proactive people spend their time and their efforts in the circle of what they can influence. Reactive people spend their time and their focus on the circle of concern. The what ifs. What if tariffs go up? What if You know, Donald Trump becomes a king and goes for a third term and, you know, declares that, you know, we’re a dictatorship now. What if the Ukraine Russia war never ceased? What if the tariffs go up? What if China gets into our grid? What if the Gaza strip peace deal doesn’t fall through? It doesn’t come through. What? What if? Who killed this person? Who killed that person? Was he the only shooter? Was he part of a team? Was the people on January 6th, how many of them were insiders? My point is this is all interesting conversation, but what are you going to do about it? You’re going to do nothing about it. At the end of the day, you’re not going to do anything about it. People that are spending their time griping and worrying about things they can’t control aren’t being proactive in their very lives. Let me ask you this question. If something were to happen, if that tornado did come down your street, wipe out your house, took away your job, took away the place where you worked, how long could you survive without a paycheck? Most people say, oh, you know, a couple of weeks, whatever. Okay. You’re not in control. You only have two weeks worth of money saved up in a, in a very likely event that you could lose your job. The place could go out of business. You could just get fired. They could downsize. Um, some new company could come in and buy it and say, Hey, we don’t need you anymore. You could be reaching that, that age where they’re like, sorry, we’re going to force you to retire. You could be driving, somebody run into you and now break your leg, break your back, whatever, you can’t work. Well, no, I’ll call Frank Azar and I’ll get my million dollars. Okay, sure, but there’s a time gap between the event and when you get the check. Can you float the time gap? Or is it going to be such a big time gap that you’ve gone into so much debt that now everything you want in your case now has to back pay everything, get you caught up. But I’m worried about what’s happening. Who shot this guy? Who shot that guy? I’m worried about the terrorists. I’m worried about our president claiming to be a king. I’m worried about the Democrats not voting and keeping the government shut down. See where I’m going with this, guys? These people that are complaining and spending all their efforts and time don’t have two weeks worth of financial ability to float the boat if they have to? What if they can’t buy food? What happens if their freezer goes out and now they got no food? How long could you go without going to the grocery store? Whatever. So this is my point. So don’t focus, and I say focus your attention. I didn’t say Hey, we’re not paying attention. We’re not listening. We’re not involved in the conversation. I’m not saying that. We’re not doing our part with our votes and things of that nature. But I’m not focusing my efforts, my time, my resources on things I cannot control. I’m going to take those resources and I’m going to put them into the circle of influence. Because the reality is, You can’t fix the system. But what I can do is I can build a life that is resilient, that is ready, that the system doesn’t matter. Yeah, I’ve got enough money put away. Got enough resources put away that this happens. Yeah, I’m good until I can replace that with something else. It’s the same thing. Stop wasting time on what you can’t change and master what’s in your reach. So what can I control? The economy, government policy. Yeah, I’ve got a local vote, but your one vote probably didn’t change the party or the outcome one way or another. If one election came down to one vote, then everybody could say, yeah, that was my vote that changed it. But we can’t because there’s such huge margins in there. I still do my part. Please hear me what I’m saying. Because this is the extreme that people do. Oh, well, he said not to vote, so it doesn’t really matter, so I’m not going to. No, that’s not what I’m saying either. Doing my part. I can’t control weather, disasters, global events. I can’t control what’s going on on the other side of the world. I can’t control, here’s a big one, other people’s opinion. I can’t control other people’s reactions or beliefs. Can’t control it. If that guy believes that killing me because of my beliefs gets him 70 virgins in heaven, I can’t control that. But I can protect myself against that person. I can’t change his beliefs. I can’t control what he’s going to believe. Right? But I can protect myself for sure. I can’t control traffic. I can’t control prices. Supply shortages, tariffs, can’t control any of that. And here’s another big one that a lot of people need to realize. You can’t control the past. You got to let that stuff go. Right? Yesterday is gone. Yesterday is gone. No do-overs, no repeats. Can’t change anything that happened yesterday. What can I control? My response. I can control how I act and how I act towards others. I can control my response. I can control my preparation, my skills, my supplies, my finances, my health, what I put in my car for the time of the season change. I can control that. I can control my attitude. I can be prepared, be ready, be watchman. I can be grateful or I can be bitter, angry, mad at the world, hold resentment. I can control my habits. What I do on a day-to-day basis. I can control my priorities. What I give attention and energy to. Am I giving my attention and energy to watching CNN, NBC, Fox News? Am I giving my attention to that? I’m going to tell you something. All of those news stations, I don’t care who they are, they are educating you. They’re not informing you. They’re educating you. That’s the system, folks. We are educating you on this radio show. Hopefully in a good way to be ready and be prepared. But it’s not information. Here’s what happened today. That’s long gone. They try to dress it up as here’s your nightly news. Here’s what happened today. But if you watch closely, they’re not informing you. They’re educating you. They’re trying to get you to go one direction or the other. So watch your inputs. What you read, watch and listen to. You know, especially in today’s world with social media and with everybody has a voice. You really have to use discernment of who you’re listening to. I can tell, you know, at church, you know, any given Sunday, oh, I heard this from so-and-so. Somebody else comes and they’ll have something totally opposite. Oh, I heard this. And this is a man of God. They’re both men of God. And they’re saying two opposite things, which tells me they’re probably not men of God because God’s not an author of confusion. But anyway. And then you can also control your circle, who you choose to associate with, right? You can pick your friends. And hopefully you’re picking friends that build you up, not tear you down, building that community. So what do I do? Well, you need to start auditing your circles. Where are you spending your time and your resources? Is it in the concern or is it in the influence circle? And then start to make those shifts. Right? Somebody yesterday said to me, hey, life’s too short to be worried about such a petty thing. Are you worried about a petty thing that you can’t really change? Or maybe you’ve got to call somebody and talk to them and make amends with them and get past it because life’s too short. He’s right. Life’s too short. Start your day. You own your day. You control your time. You do. And if not, guess what? I train people. I teach, I coach at 6 a.m. You know why? Because that’s the only time I can do it. And you know what the response is that when people, I tell people that, oh my gosh, there’s no way I could get up that early. Why not? You can control the time you go to bed. You can control, you know, how well you sleep. You can control. And if you got to, you know, shorten your sleep to get up a little early to do something that you don’t have time to do because you got to be at a job at eight o’clock or whatever, seven o’clock, whatever, it doesn’t matter. Get up earlier. You can work out in your home. You can control it. Are you making excuses or are you making effort? That’s a big one. We have a saying in our family. It’s like, hey, FSO, figure stuff out. Figure it out. You got to go do it. And then build those habits, right? Build the habits and start small. Pick one area. Maybe it’s your health. I can control my health. You know, I can buy what I put in my body, what I don’t put in my body. Whether I get a little bit of exercise, I can control my finances, what I spend my money on, what I don’t spend my money on. Most of the time, me, myself included, you know, we spend our money on wants. All your spending breaks down into two categories, needs and wants. And that’s really it. And a lot of times we kind of make it a really gray area Well, I need that, and it’s really a want that. All right? So really break that down. You can do that. And then you can also do mindset and preps and whatever. Just break them down like we talked about earlier. Hey, I’m going to go spend 30 minutes on going through my cars, making sure my car is set, make sure, you know, my wife’s car is how many cars I got, making sure they’re all set and ready to go for the winter. Trim the noise. That’s important. You know, turn off. the input of negativity, get trapped in it. And I don’t care. I don’t care who you’re listening to. They’re all educating you, right? I can go from one station and I often do this, go from one station and one is anti-president and the other one is, well, the president could do no wrong. It’s two extremes and it’s really hard. If you go to a source called Ground News, they try to analyze all the new sources and they go, hey, this is leaning left, this is leaning right, this is factual, this isn’t, this is kind of in the middle, and they kind of give you that non-biased grading, if you will. It’s called ground news. And then you need to stack wins, small victories, right? When you think of any major battle, It’s, hey, we took the beach in Normandy and then we went into France and then we took town by town and city by city and then country by country. And then finally we got all the way in. But, you know, little, little steps. That’s how you overcome this little tiny stacks. Teach it. If you really want to learn something, go and teach it. You might say, well, I’m not equipped to teach. I’m not qualified to teach. If you know more than somebody in a particular area, you are qualified to teach them because you know more. You’re qualified. So go and teach it. And then also review what you did. How can I make this better? What worked? What didn’t? And what am I gaining? putting that information into experience, and then gaining knowledge. You see, guys, it’s about stewardship, not control. And I can’t control things that are happening to me, but I am responsible regardless of what happens to me. Okay, that’s a big statement. Can’t control, but I am responsible. So I can’t control whether it’s going to snow tonight, but I’m responsible whether or not I was ready for it. I can’t control if it rains tonight, but I can control, and I am responsible to make sure the roof doesn’t leak. Super important. All right, we got one more break, and then we’ll wrap this up with some more kind of personal readiness ideas and home readiness ideas that we can talk about as we conclude, and even community readiness. So 560-KLZ.

And I was talking about our circle of influence, what we can control and what we can’t, whether it’s the circle of influence or the circle of concern. And so I’d like to wrap up today talking about here’s some things we can look at at different areas of our life. Maybe we can apply. So personal readiness. First thing you should do, hey, get that food and water storage supply. 30 days. Like I said, in my example, you know, some people are like, yeah, I could probably last a couple of weeks, 30 day, 30 day. And if you’re able to, you know, grow a garden, you know, start somewhere. And again, everybody is, you know, in different places, different situations. Some people in an apartment, some people have land, just, it doesn’t matter. FSO, figure it out. right? We have a tower garden inside. It’s a Juice Plus item, but there’s many different brands out there. It’s a little hydroponic system. I have a mushroom grow tent, and I do all this stuff indoor. In fact, last night, I made some spaghetti squash from spaghetti squash in my garden. I made my own spaghetti sauce from tomatoes that I grew, onions that I grew, bell peppers, jalapenos that I grew, basil that I grew all from that tower garden there that basil was from there. The garlic and everything made it all and we cooked it up. The only thing I didn’t provide was the hamburger and You know, I have rabbits and chickens. I could have threw that in there, but I didn’t go that route this last night. But that meal 100% was stuff from my own garden there. And learn to can, put stuff up. You know, that could be part of the 30-day thing. You know, you can buy a little instant canner. It’s Nesco is the one that we have. It’s an automatic one. So you don’t have to deal with, you know, the old, the old pressure pots and things like that. This is one, but it’s all automatic. You put it in, push the button, set it. And then when it beeps, you go and push another button and it’s done. And we’ve canned a lot of stuff. You know, you come across deals at the store sometimes at church someone will bring like one day somebody brought three cases of bananas that they had gotten and here’s a whole bunch of bananas so everybody took a whole bunch and my wife made like four or five different banana bread loaves and we threw them in the freezer so you can do this um you know so you can start to build your own 30-day readiness thing so before we move on the next one we got a caller coming in hello
SPEAKER 08 :
Hey, it’s Mark from Wiggins. How are you this afternoon?
SPEAKER 09 :
Good, Mark. How are you doing?
SPEAKER 08 :
Good. So you’re talking about readiness and something that came into my mind when you were talking about water. So I keep like a stock tank full of water and I put a little bit of chlorine in it. And we also have a hot tub. And over the years, I’ve learned that using the liquid chlorine is too much work. Using the granule chlorine works, but it’s expensive unless you buy the 25-pound box or the container that’s 25 pounds, which is a lot. It may be that we don’t use that for like 10 years, but the amount of money per pound or ounce or however they figure it is lowest cost when you buy it in the 25-pounders. And the other comment real quick was – For cars, I always tell people to get a flashlight that’s headband type, that has a little strap and you can put it on your head. So if you have to change a tire in the dark, you can have your hands free. And I’ve heard a lot of people change tires over the years. I mean, dozens of people. And usually the biggest hurdle for them was getting the lug nuts off because they were trying to do it with their arm with a little tiny wrench. And I said, just stand on it while the tire’s still on the ground. You know, use the gravity. Use your weight. Stand on it to make it loose because you’re not going to hurt anything. And then jack the vehicle up to get the tire off. But anyway, that’s all the comments I had for you, Bill.
SPEAKER 09 :
You know, that’s great. You make a great point because you see that builds into what we’re talking about. You can’t control the price of the individual smaller chlorine, but you can control what you buy and what you do with it. So you’re buying in bulk and you are kind of, you know, adjusting a little bit and saving on how you can buy. I remember one time with our hot tubs, somebody had given us those really big, they’re about hockey puck sized. chlorine and I said okay yeah I can use those and I took them to my bandsaw and I thought I was going to cut them up Worst mistake ever. First of all, holy cow, I had a mask on, but it still got through and it corroded my whole bandsaw. I had to throw the thing away because all that chlorine got up in there. So that was a bad idea. But yeah, buying in bulk, that’s good. On the headlamp thing, I like to carry two, okay? And here’s the reason why. You make a really valid point about, you know, the hands-free stuff, which is huge. The problem with that is that if I’m not in that scenario, and let’s say we’re in more of a safety scenario, and I’m having to navigate through maybe downtown or in the woods or whatever it may be, I don’t like that on my head because, one, I can’t control on and off, but also, two, when I look at my partner or whoever I’m with, I look at my wife, guess what I do? I blind them. So that’s one thing that I don’t like about the headlamp. So I kind of go both ways on that. I have the handheld one and then the headlamp one. But I have the Mini Warrior 2. It’s by Olight and it has a really big clip. And if you wear a baseball cap, it can clip on there. It’s what one of my son-in-laws does. He clips it onto his baseball, but then it’s also a handheld. I don’t wear baseball hats. So there’s options in there, but that’s a really good point about that. And then on the lug nut thing, so I had some elderly relatives that travel. They live in Arkansas, and they come up to visit my parents there in Iowa. And they went out and they bought – I think it was a DeWalt one. I don’t know. They all make them, but they DeWalt a bigger impact wrench, a battery packed one to bust lug nuts just in case, because they just didn’t have the strength. They were elderly and they threw that battery pack, you know, and if you get, if you got the means, you can, it’s got the space, you know, that’s another option too, is to, you know, get one of those impact wrenches that will bust a lug nut, you know, such as a DeWalt or, or, or a Milwaukee is one or two. So yeah, that’s great stuff.
SPEAKER 08 :
Great stuff. Have a great day, sir. Appreciate your time.
SPEAKER 09 :
All right. You take care. All right. Moving on. We’re only going to probably get through this personal radio side. We got the home stuff later, but. We’ll see what John wants to talk about when he comes back next week. But the next item I have is, you know, that seven-day blackout box. We’ve talked about these with, you know, lots of batteries, lights, things like that, that when the power goes off, you have those stages. You have level one, level two, level three. You’ve got, hey, the power’s going to be out for a couple hours to a couple days to a couple of weeks, and you stagger those stages. Those kind of state levels, if you will, based on the power outage you want. And, you know, again, you know, most of the time, guys, power goes out for an hour or two. We’re going to be OK. You know, the world’s not going to end. Your food’s not going to go bad. You’re going to be OK. You know, that’s where you want a couple of those little little things. So, you know, bash your toe or whatever. Or if you got to cook something or, you know, you can get in the kitchen and use a can opener or something. You need some kind of lights. And again, those headlamps work work well for those. Uh, batteries are good radio, you know, something that if you got to listen to the weather station or, you know, get some kind of a news, they have alerts on them, you know, have your first aid kits. I’ve got several first aid kits staged throughout the house. I’ve talked about this before, but my big trauma, my big medical kit is actually in a backpack and it’s hanging in the garage right next to the door. And the reason for that is because it’s my biggest kit, but it’s a grab and go. You know, I live on a couple acres here and if I got to grab that thing and run down to the, you know, the back of the fence there, you know, I’ve taken that with me or if I get a call. and I need to jump in. My wife says, hey, I just went off the road. I’m hurt. I’m just down the block, whatever. I can grab that backpack easy enough on my way to the car and go with it. Personal readiness. Here’s a big one. Guys, you are your best tool. You got to get yourself in shape. A lot of people neglect this. A lot of people have desk jobs. A lot of people can’t run a mile. I don’t care what pace. You can’t even run a mile. A lot of people can’t do You know, 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups. They can’t do three pull-ups. I mean, these are simple things that you should get up every day. You know, do some squats, do some push-ups, some sit-ups, do some pull-ups. Do something. Get better. Get stronger. Are you able to carry your loved one out of a burning house? I mean, that’s how you need to look at that. I mean, heaven forbid, you know, you lose your loved one in a fire. because you were too weak to carry them out. Now I understand age and disability. So don’t get all, you know, mad at me for saying that, but most of us can figure stuff out, right? Most of us aren’t there and we should be able to, you know, be able to carry our loved ones out in emergency. Cause I don’t know. I just couldn’t imagine the guilt I would have myself going, man, I was just, I neglected my body so much that I wasn’t able to carry my grandchildren out. That’s, that’s, That would be a bad day. That just would be horrible. Learn skills. This is your biggest asset is learning skills. I’m all for it. You’re never too old to learn. Learn how to start a fire. Learn first aid. You’re more likely to encounter a first aid event than any of this other stuff, guys. 90 seconds. Every 90 seconds, somebody suffers from cardiac arrest. Are you trained and prepped to give basic CPR? Do it. Our church gives it for free. Come out to our church. We’ll get you in a class. We’ll get you certified. It’s a tangible skill that, yes, I did it 10 years ago. Okay, that’s too long. I did it 10 months ago. That’s getting too long. These are practical skills. We’ve got to get those reps in. Learn water purification, just like our caller said. Is there other means to purify that stock tank or whatever? Tool repair, basic repair. Reduce your debt. Create small cash reserve. Invest in other things, gold, silver, Bitcoin, all that stuff. Do it all in small, small chunks. All right, gang. Well, that’s all I had for you today. I mean, actually, it’s not all I had, but that’s all the time we have today. And I’m sure John’s got a great topic for us when he comes back next week. In the meantime, be ready. Stay alert.
SPEAKER 11 :
Stay alive.
