Warm January weather sets the stage for this fast-moving hour of https://Fix-ItRadio.com, where John Rush and Larry Unger ask a simple question: Are you using this unexpected break in winter to your advantage—or missing a critical window? From winter watering along Colorado’s dry Front Range to pruning trees, roses, and grasses, this episode is packed with timely advice that could save your landscape before spring even arrives. Should sprinklers really be running in January? How do you know if the ground is too frozen—or just frozen enough? The conversation shifts indoors with smart, practical guidance on organization and tax
SPEAKER 03 :
Walter? Upstairs! Are you alright?
SPEAKER 11 :
In the floor behind the chair.
SPEAKER 03 :
This is America.
SPEAKER 01 :
Does everybody know what time it is?
SPEAKER 03 :
Fix It Radio!
SPEAKER 06 :
And it’s that time, Fix It Radio, KLZ 560. Thanks for joining us today. Myself, Larry Unger, with me today in studio. It’s Saturday, the 31st of July. If you’re listening to a replay of this program, you know what day it is.
SPEAKER 10 :
January.
SPEAKER 06 :
Sorry, January.
SPEAKER 10 :
What did I say? July.
SPEAKER 06 :
Oh, sorry, not July. No, I don’t wish it was July. Time goes by too fast as it is. I don’t know why I said July. January. They both start with J’s. It all works. Yeah. So it’s January 31st. Yes. And I knew that. And beautiful day outside. Although the way the weather is, you would think we were not in January. So maybe that’s why I said that, Larry.
SPEAKER 10 :
We are in July temperatures almost.
SPEAKER 06 :
The weather has been really great, so we need some snow. Of course, you all know that, and the mountains need it, and we need it down here as well. But we don’t have it right now. It’s going to be a beautiful weekend. You may be out doing a few things, and I’ll talk about a few things along those lines today as well. If you’re listening to a replay, as always, thank you so much for that. We appreciate it. I’m going to talk a little bit of probably some outside things you can do right now during this time of the year, and then also going to get into, which we were going to do a few weeks ago, just didn’t get a chance to do it, some of the organizational things that you may be wanting to do this time of the year. Some of you will be getting ready to do taxes, and there’s organizational things that can be done with, you know, filing and, you know, closets and things like that. So we’ll get into some of that today as well. But again, Larry Enger with me today. Charlie Grimes, our engineer. Text line 307-217. 307-282-2222, and you can text us pretty much any time. I answer those as quickly as I can throughout the days and evenings and such even. So if you text me if it’s super late at night, I probably won’t answer. But if it’s throughout normal hours, I will do my very best to answer that and typically will answer the next day if it’s a late night. Text message, again, 307-282-2222. You can call in live on this Saturday. If it’s a replay show, of course you cannot, but on this Saturday program we’re live and you can call in Direct 303-477-5600. Now, one thing, and I’m just going to slip this in because it’s important, because of the lack of moisture that we’ve had this season, especially down here at our elevation. And for some of you, it might be a little different depending upon where you live. But along this Denver Front Range area, all the way up even into Cheyenne and eastern Colorado and so on, we have not had a lot of moisture, meaning you do need to do some winter watering. So if you haven’t thought about that or you haven’t done it, this is a good weekend to do that. The temperatures will be up enough. Drag out your garden hose or whatever you use to do whatever it is you need to do. And at least get your trees and some of your shrubs and things like that watered. Now, the way to do that on your larger trees, of course, we’ve talked about this with tree experts in the past, is… to take a slower trickle of the hose set that to the wherever the branches extend that’s where you want to water you don’t water at the trunk water out to where the branches are extending because that’s where the roots down below actually are and that’s where that that’s where that’s the water that they need or that’s how they’re going to need to be fed now you can also do some tree feeding if you would like that’s a little bit more complicated Probably not going to get into that right now. That’s something we can get into at a later date. But you at least need to do some winter watering. Some of you that have sprinkler systems, yes, I know you’re going to go back through the drain sides of things, which I talked about as we went into winter. And for some people, myself included, I’m actually running my sprinkler system as we speak. It doesn’t run as much as it normally would in warmer weather. But this time of the year when we’ve got it as dry as it is, yes, I’ll go ahead and run the sprinkler system. That runs the drip system. still gets some moisture on the lawn, and it needs it. We haven’t had enough moisture this year to where if you want to keep your things alive as we head back into the spring, which if you think about it right now, we are five weeks away, I believe it is. I have to count for sure, but I think it’s five weeks away from daylight saving time. And when that happens, people start thinking more about spring. I get it. It’s still, we’ve got all of February. We’ve got all of March. We can have snowy weather during February and March, but you know what? We could not. You don’t know. Point being, it’s a nice weekend. It’s going to be about 55, 57 degrees today on the 31st. And on the 1st of February tomorrow, going to be around 60 degrees here in the metro area. So when it’s that warm, yes, go ahead and do some winter watering. Not going to hurt anything other than maybe your wallet for the little bit of water you’ll have to spend. And you’ll be safe because we don’t know what kind of moisture we may get as we head down the road. You’ve got a nice warm weekend to do some of these things. would encourage you to do that the other things that if you haven’t done already outside type chores if you haven’t done them is you know pruning of your tall grasses or rose bushes or things along those lines great time of the year to do some of those things rose bushes you can cut way way way back not going to harm them at all they typically grow very well and this would be a great weekend to do some of those things along those lines pruning of trees and so on. Same thing. You can do that as well if you would like to. It’s the time of the year where it’s a whole lot easier to prune trees when there’s no leaves on them than when there is. And if you get the pruning done now, the less you have to do this next summer. So it’s a nice warm weekend. If there’s things that you need to do outside, I would encourage you to get some of those things done. in Colorado we can make that shift and swing I mean last weekend it was extremely cold we were almost down to zero degrees so we can we can make huge swings from one weekend to the next but we have really nice weather this weekend take advantage of that and go ahead and do some things outside Larry have you done any of that yet or what are your plans
SPEAKER 10 :
Oh, yeah. I’ve already started. In fact, I just cranked up my sprinkler system yesterday, as a matter of fact. But mine’s easy to drain, so firing it up and running it for a day or two or a week… Is not a big deal. Not a big deal.
SPEAKER 06 :
And for some of you, that may be something you want to do, where instead of having to drag a hose and all that, you may want to go ahead and just reverse your… your process on your sprinkler system knowing what you need to do to drain it back out right now i can look at the weather really quick for you all i should have done this earlier this morning i apologize frankly we aren’t getting we’re not getting cold enough really at night where you could literally just leave the sprinkler system on if you put some insulation around your backflow valve outside you could literally leave your sprinkler system on for the remainder of the week looking at the weather We’re getting cold again next Monday night, it looks. And again, that could change. You’ve got to look at the weather every day. But, you know, when we’re in the upper 20s, it isn’t cold enough to worry about freezing anything. As long as you’ve got some insulation around the backflow valve, you could leave that on and not have any issues at all and handle your watering that way. Now, here’s a recommendation. And I talk about this on the seasonal adjustments. So on almost all clocks, all modern irrigation clocks. You have the ability to make global settings with the time. In other words, you can make seasonal adjustments. You can change the percentage instead of it being at 100% this time of the year. You may want to run it at 50%, for example. You won’t need to run it 100%, back that off to 50%, let it run its cycle. meaning that if a zone normally would run for 20 minutes it’s going to run for 10. So the only thing you have to be careful of there is your drip system because drip takes a while to be effective and you need to be careful to not pull that back too far because you still want to get adequate water this time of year. That’s why we’re doing this is to get some water onto some of the plants and shrubs so you don’t have any winter kill and lose anything as we head into spring and for those of you that are more in the plant expert end of things you know which ones need more water than others but I’ll tell you right now all of your trees and things like that unless it’s an old established you know tree that’s going all the way down into the water table You’ll need to do some watering, especially if they’re young and immature and so on. You’ll need to do some watering of those trees especially, or you stand a chance of actually losing those trees. So some of you that may be planting some things even this last summer, even into the fall, maybe last spring even, believe it or not, those have not fully taken. You’ll need to go ahead and water some of those to make sure that you’ve got those dialed in because if not, you have a chance of losing those trees and shrubs. John up in Cheyenne is next. Go ahead. Good morning. Good morning, John.
SPEAKER 11 :
So I got a question. I got my garage door opener. Works great. Except I have to be in the car like three feet from the door to make the remotes work. And I’m thinking it might be because of the metal building is blocking the signal. Because it’s an all metal building. Right. I was wondering what your thoughts were. of extending the wire that it uses for the antenna. It’s got a little wire hanging down. And just mounting that outside the door. Sure, I would.
SPEAKER 10 :
Is this a new problem? No, since I put it up.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, I would try that.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, I’m going to try that. I’m also going to check the batteries in the remote. I think, Larry, you were going there? Yes. It was brand new. It came with new batteries, but You don’t know how long it was sitting on the shelf.
SPEAKER 06 :
That’s true.
SPEAKER 11 :
So how those batteries are. So, yeah, I just wanted your opinion on that because they got a lot running. You know, it’s just a little probably, you know, 20 or 24 gauge, you know, real thin little wire. So I could, you know, attach another piece to it and run it out the door.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, basically just extend that, you know, what you’re talking about is just extend that antenna.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, because I think the building’s picking it up. The other thought I had was, and see if this is what you think. If I took the wire and put a little end on it and attached it to the building, would that create the building being a – I have no idea on that one.
SPEAKER 06 :
No idea. I would doubt it because the building’s got some grounds and stuff. It’s attached to other things. I don’t know that that – and I’m not an expert in this. If somebody is and they want to chime in, feel free. I don’t think that would be advantageous.
SPEAKER 11 :
OK. Yeah. Either way. And you were talking storage.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 11 :
I saw that I was in Costco and they’ve got that metal storage rack that fits the containers they sell on special again. Oh, good. So anybody needs it. I made my own in my storage closet at a two by fours because I had a whole bunch of leftover two by fours. Might as well not spend money when you don’t have to.
SPEAKER 06 :
Right.
SPEAKER 11 :
And that works just as easy. And I made them so they slide in. There’s a little gap between each on the floor.
SPEAKER 06 :
Nice. And it works nice. So, all right, John, thanks. No, you’re very welcome, John. I appreciate it. And if anybody else has any ideas on that problem John’s got, let us know. But I don’t think attaching to the building is going to be advantageous. In fact, it might actually hurt versus help.
SPEAKER 10 :
I don’t know. I notice that sometimes if I’m using my radio out in the garage and if I touch the antenna of the radio to the metal frame for the garage door, I get better reception.
SPEAKER 06 :
Okay. And just be one of those things, just give it a whirl and try it. That’s all you can do.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 06 :
can’t hurt anything if you do it’s all you can do so again any of you that have some ideas on that please let us know uh yes as far as again really quick going back and i got a text message a moment ago saying well you know john in your case don’t you have some parts of the lawn that still have uh frozen so yeah i do i have some areas where it is some of the north sides yes you can walk on it and tell that it’s pretty hard and packed and it’s frozen in those areas although i’ve got other areas where No, it gets enough, those southern exposure, you know, the direct sunlight areas where it’s got plenty of exposure. No, it’s not frozen. In fact, I noticed this week that each day I walked on it, you could tell it was getting a little bit looser and looser and so on. And again, mainly what we’re doing here is not so much the lawn, but the shrubs and the drip and everything else around it. But some of you that have direct sunlight, sunlight on you know the lawn and so on yeah you can go ahead and get some water on that not gonna hurt anything at all and again you can walk it you can feel it you can even take a screwdriver or some sort of a you know pointed object and poke it down in the soil and see how frozen or not it is and determine whether or not you want to go ahead and water or not again use your own judgment you’ll know your own lawn better than than anyone and some of you have total north facing where it’s going to be solid frozen in that case just water your shrubs and don’t worry about it but some of you have nice southern exposure and if that’s the case then yeah you want to go ahead and make sure you’re getting some water on things because you’re gonna you’re gonna need that so just a side note again outside chores Warm enough this weekend whereby if you want to do anything from, you know, gutter cleaning to just making sure things are dialed in, window washing, I mean, you name it. It’s a nice, beautiful weekend. I get it. Our daylight hours are not as long as they are in the summertime, but we’re gaining daylight every day right now, finally. Charlie and I were noticing this past week, it’s finally getting to the point where down here we look west. out towards the the sunset and you know we’ve got daylight now you can actually still see a hint of sun behind the mountains at six o’clock now it’s dark then but about 5 15 to 5 20 it’s still light enough out where you can still see and it wasn’t long ago where it was 4 30 and it was dark so we’re gaining sunlight every day so it’s getting better and better as that goes and as i said daylight saving time is coming up just around the corner so Anything you guys need, we’re here for you. Give us a call like John just did, 303-477-5600. We’ll take a quick break. Come right back. Myself, Larry Unger. This is Fix It Radio, KLZ 560.

What if you could get over 110 lab biomarkers tested, just like Dr. Mark Hyman advertises, but for a fraction of the cost, and with a doctor who actually explains the results? At Castle Rock Regenerative Health, Dr. Scott Faulkner has recreated this powerful biomarker test panel at a substantial savings. We have a special price for both men and women. Just $689. That’s a savings of over $2,500 over the standard price. And here’s the difference. With Hyman, you get numbers on a page. With Castle Rock Regenerative Health, you get Dr. Faulkner and his team walking you through every result, showing what’s off and creating a personalized plan to fix it. What’s even better, you don’t even have to be a concierge patient to get this pricing. This is open to everyone. Think about it. Most people’s deductible is higher than this special price. SPEAKER 06 :
Okay, we are back. Fix-It Radio, KLZ 560 website, by the way, fixitradio.com. Myself, Larry Unger. And one more thing I should mention, too. Actually, I mentioned this during the week that Paul from WaterPro, so you just heard an ad from a moment ago, was going to join us today. We’re going to talk water quality and just all the things involving that, forever chemicals and so on. And Paul texted early this morning and just wasn’t feeling well. He’s had a little bit of issues here lately. uh with some surgery and such not getting into great detail but uh he’s still able to work and handle everything else but wasn’t able to make it with us today so if you need anything at all be sure to check with paul great guy by the way and when it comes to water water quality and all that and i’m not exaggerating when i say this is one of the smartest guys i know when it comes to all the things involving that so if you want really good fresh drinking water or some of you that struggle with you know hard water or stains or deposits or you know what i mean when you don’t have good quality water and even good quality water that might taste good in some of the emissaries, they still have a lot of those forever chemicals and plastics and things in it. That’s what I was going to get Paul on to talk about, whereby it might taste okay and might even feel okay on your skin and such, but it still has things in it that you need to make sure you’re taking out. So we’ll get Paul on here in the weeks ahead. We’re going to do a rain check on him today. But he was planning on being here today, so he sent his apologies and really appreciate Paul and his support for what we do here. We will get him on here in the not-too-distant future. So if you need anything along those lines in the meantime, make sure you give Paul a call and let him know that you heard him here, by the way, as well on Fix It Radio. Okay, one thing that we should talk about for a moment. is, and this goes along with some of what John from Shine was talking about a moment ago with the interior organization of things and so on, tax prep. So a lot of you, today is the day where if you’re a business owner, you’ve got to make sure that all of your stuff is getting sent out, W-2s and 1099s and all that sort of stuff. So there’s a lot of folks scrambling today to get some of those things done because it’s the deadline for that. And some of you have already, as if you’re a regular employee, you’ve received all of your items and you’re probably getting ready to do tax preparation and so on. So It’s also a good time when you’re going through a lot of your files and different things and so on. And some of us might keep things that you may or may not need when it comes to tax preparation and so on. And my point is, go ahead and do that cleaning now. Go through some of those things that, you know. well i’ve been keeping this letter from such and such well and really quick too this is something i’ve noticed with with um as i went through a lot of my folks’s stuff and helping clean out things from their house and so on and i do this and i don’t know if everybody else does i if i get a letter or anything that comes in the mail and i need to save it i take it out of the envelope anything else that gets attached to it that i don’t need sometimes there’s blank copies sometimes there’s a cover page sometimes there’s a follow-up page on the back and reality is none of that has anything to do with the actual document i need to save i throw everything else away i don’t keep the envelope i don’t keep the stuffers that are inside of it i keep the main document that i might need for tax purposes only And that’s all I do. Now, I’ve known people and I’ve tried to do this in the past and not to much success because, frankly, it’s time consuming. I have found it to it’s handy and it’s not. A lot of people will take and it’s legal to do this. You can convert that piece of paper into an electronic form and you can store that as a PDF, put that into a folder and have that for tax purposes and everything. And quite frankly, if I had more time to do that, I would. In my case, it’s easier for me to take whatever document I need, put it into whatever file it goes in. It takes me one fell swoop to do that. I’m not scanning. I’m not taking pictures. I’m not dinking around with anything. And I get it. I could quickly maybe sit there and scan it or take a picture, which my phone will turn it into a document, and you could do all those things. But at the end of the day, I don’t find myself really – Larry, I don’t find myself – how do I want to say this? I don’t find myself getting any further ahead in doing that. And I used to, I did that for a while. I had one of the little, one little scanners, receipt scanner things where you’d run everything through it. What I found myself doing is I spent more time dinking around with scanning those things in and then making sure they were going to the right file and then filing the file and, you know, dinking around with all of that. I found myself actually spending more time than just putting that particular receipt into a folder.
SPEAKER 10 :
Well, you usually end up putting that receipt into a folder anyway. At least I did.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, and again, for a lot of people, they could scan it, shred it, do that. And I used to do some of that. Again, for years, I had a scanner. I was really good about taking receipts and doing that. And then as time went by, I’ll just be frank, it just got to the point where that became, frankly, more cumbersome than just sticking the receipt into a folder. file and then being done with it yep so now the important documents you guys need to keep and this is on the tax side of things of course is all of your pertinent documents you get from the bank your w-2s of course if you get a 1099 anything income wise you’ve got to have that your accountant or whoever does your taxes will need those things to file things you know properly at the end of the at the end of you know at the end of the the the tax season you’ll need to get all that stuff done and then you know they’ll they’ll need all of that to make sure that you’re all dialed in of course now everybody does those things a little bit differently some of you do your own taxes that’s fine some of us don’t we have you know accountants that handle things for us and so on i have too much to do to do it myself nor would i ever intend to even do that myself so uh yes i’ve got an accountant that does all of my things and the one thing too that you need to keep track of and the the rules change on this you talk to your your tax advisers on this, but your donations to charitable organizations and or you take something down to Salvation Army or Goodwill or whatever. Make sure you’re tracking all of those things as well because, believe it or not, that stuff adds up pretty quickly and there’s some nice donation credit that you can get for some of those things, but make sure you can back up what you’re doing. There’s some laws around that. You can look that up and determine what that is, but that’s something else you want to make sure you’re keeping all of your receipts on. And then you guys that are business owners, you know what to do on that. I’m not… I’m not going to give any of you advice on those things. You know exactly what you need to do on the business sides of things and what receipts you need and all of that. So, you know, bottom line, you know, you guys do what you need to do on that. I’m not telling you anything you need to know, but going back to, and some of you might have your own systems on the scanning of and so on. And as much as I’m a digital electronic guy, I mean, I don’t even use paper anymore. I’ve got one of the remarkable tablets that I ride on and I don’t use hardly any paper at all, hardly print anything, but I, I just haven’t gotten a really good, fast system down whereby I can take receipts, scan them, and put them into a place to make that easy. To me, it’s more cumbersome, and it’s easier to stick that into a file. Oh, Charlie wanted me to explain what Remarkable is. Yeah, it’s called Remarkable. So I have a tablet that looks like an iPad, only it’s really thin. So it looks like an iPad or one of your Android pads, whatever. It’s really thin, and you write on it like you would paper. It’s got the same feel, and you can erase and write. You can turn your writing into text if you want. You can put text in. I use it daily for all of my show notes. I use it now if somebody calls in. I need to jot down notes or what the caller is, what they said, etc., I used to use regular paper for all of that. I would have a notebook that I would carry around almost all the time. And the problem is, you know, as with anything else, now there’s one extra piece of paper that you’re trying to deal with, keep track of. If I wanted to go back and look at show notes of something maybe I had said or somebody I’d talked to or a phone number I’d written down or whatever. It was always cumbersome to go back and find that. So now I write everything down in this remarkable tablet that I have. If I do my coaching calls, all of what I write down when I’m on the phone with them goes into this. You can organize things by notebooks and folders and so on. It’s a really great system. I did a ton of research. I literally spent almost a year researching which ones of these to buy because I knew I needed something with all the different things I do. I needed something to keep myself more organized. And the remarkable tablet ended up being it for me. Now, I’m not… I’m not paid by them. That’s the research I did on my own. Funny, though, I’ve sold three or four of them to my clients after they see me using them because they’re so slick that I’ve got others now using them. And there’s several different versions. You can just go to the Remarkable website and check it out if that’s something you’re interested in. But that’s what I use to help be a little bit more organized, and it works very well for me. So thank you, Charlie, for asking that. Yes. Steve in Colorado Springs, you’re next. Go ahead.
SPEAKER 12 :
Good morning, Commander John.
SPEAKER 06 :
How are you? Good morning. Good. How are you?
SPEAKER 12 :
Good, good. Quick question. We were talking about it at dinner last time, and I don’t know where, in fact, nobody else, any of the neighbors had this problem. But anyway, you know, if anybody listens to your show knows we have a lot of highway.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yes, we do.
SPEAKER 12 :
And a while back, maybe six, seven years ago, with 80, I guess to 95, there is a half-moon window on the upper level. It does nothing but look pretty. You let the heat in when you don’t want it. Right. So anyway, this thing blows out. And I’m going, that’s just crazy. So anyway, plywood, the window and a 2000 bucks layer, we get it fixed, but there’s gotta be something about the orientation of the house that creates kind of a Bernoulli low pressure effect for that thing to blow out.
SPEAKER 06 :
It has to be.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah. I still can’t figure out all the ins and outs. Nobody else has had that problem. Even people with the same model, same builder, but they don’t have, they’re not a, uh, corner house. with nothing else by it.
SPEAKER 06 :
But the other nice… Basically, you’re saying something inside the house is getting pressurized, making that blow out.
SPEAKER 12 :
Or something outside the house creates enough pressure differential to suck it out.
SPEAKER 06 :
Right. Right. Yeah, one of the two.
SPEAKER 12 :
Either way, same thing. You know, it’s tempered glass, so you’ve got glass all over the creation to pick it up. And I’m just kind of at a loss why we would have that wonderful feature and nobody else does. Anyway…
SPEAKER 06 :
Honestly, again, learn something new every time I do a program, whether it’s this one or all the other ones I do, Steve, and I’ll tell you straight up, yeah, you got me on that one. I’ve never heard of anything like that in my life.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, the other thing that happens is because of that low pressure area, back when people were much more dependent on, like, bank statements, brokerage statements, medical records, they would put them in trash and they wouldn’t shred them. And the kind of stuff would blow and wind up in my front yard. Right. And I’m going, you know, not too great, guys. I mean, I’m an honest guy. I’m not going to steal this stuff and put it on the web. But, you know, it’s a little bit better now that things are more digitized and you have auto pay and all that jazz. But just crazed the stuff I would find in the front yard after every windstorm.
SPEAKER 06 :
Wow. Yeah, and again, by the way, those are things that, as you know, Steve, yeah, we don’t want that. We don’t want those kind of things blowing around.
SPEAKER 12 :
No, I’m a privacy guy, not exactly a freak. And, you know, back to something else we talked about that came up last night, nobody else was aware of that you and I have talked about, and that’s these bad guys have this little small box, two switches. Switch A defeats the Wi-Fi. Switch B defeats the cell phone service. And so all these billions and billions of dollars people spend cameras and networks and alarms and alert security company and cops is pretty much useless. And as we talked about, this has already been used extensively, at least if they’re publicizing high profile, high net worth people think like NFL players where they know they’re going to be gone on a certain day, playing a game at a certain place. The only thing I have been able to find that might be a potential solution, albeit extremely expensive, is to go back and hardwire everything, every camera, every sensor. And when your house is already built, you know how expensive that is when you start screwing around with walls and hardwiring. Anyway, do you have any other options as far as preserving your integrity? the alarm videos with the Wi-Fi?
SPEAKER 06 :
No, I think you’re on the right track. And again, for a lot of folks listening, and this is something that we could even do, almost do an entire program on, Steve, is when you’re using a lot of those in the Wi-Fi mode is maybe the best way for me to say that, or if you’re using Wi-Fi. Probably, as you know, probably one of the easiest things… For a hacker to come along and hack into is Wi-Fi. There are devices now, and some of you won’t believe this, but there are devices now where literally they are less than the size of a cell phone that they can program in with an antenna to literally not only jam up your Wi-Fi if they wanted to, but with really pretty fast… Speed, Steve, literally figure out what your password is and connect to your Wi-Fi and see everything they want to that quickly. And folks, if you’re listening and don’t think I’m exaggerating, I’ve seen some of these videos of some of these high-end… By the way, these are good hackers that are trying to let people know these are the things that can be done. And they’ll even demonstrate, Steve, how quickly they can get into the back end of things. So to your point… The only way to eliminate that, and it doesn’t eliminate it totally because a good hacker can still get into a system even when it’s hardwired, but if you want to eliminate the casual person that’s out there trying to gain access as easily as possible, yeah, figure out a way to not use Wi-Fi.
SPEAKER 12 :
And those have been out there for several years now.
SPEAKER 06 :
Oh, yes. And Steve, they just keep getting better, and I’m not exaggerating, by the day. Not the month or the year, but literally by the day they’re getting better.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, I’m going to hope cybersecurity on a national security level has got this figured out, or we’re in a world of hurt.
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, and some of the guys that I follow, some of you are asking, John, how do you know about this stuff? Well, I follow some people on social media that actually are experts in this, and it’s amazing the things that they do now, Steve.
SPEAKER 12 :
Now, somebody asked me last night at dinner, does that include key fobs? I said, oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 06 :
Oh, yes. Oh, yes.
SPEAKER 12 :
And they’ve already got that thing open and ready to go before you even get in the store.
SPEAKER 06 :
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 12 :
And I’m not sure what you can do about that except keep them in some sort of parity box or lead line coffin or whatever. I don’t know. Just don’t know. Anyway, back to your tax thing, I don’t know, but it seems like, people putting out K-1s have some sort of automatic pass because a lot of times you don’t get K-1s until after April 15th, which, of course, is no problem getting extension in October. But I would say the vast bulk of corporate entities putting out K-1s, you know, partnerships and LLCs, they do not put out K-1s on a timely basis. I mean, January 31st to them, forget it. Doesn’t matter.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, and that one, you might have me on that one. I’m not sure. I don’t know that I have an answer on that one.
SPEAKER 12 :
I just thought maybe they had some sort of special carve-out order.
SPEAKER 06 :
That one, I don’t know, Steve. Again, that’s above my pay grade. I do not know. Just curious. That one, I do not know.
SPEAKER 12 :
Make it a fabulous Saturday. Always enjoy your show in Wisconsin.
SPEAKER 06 :
I appreciate it, Steve. Thank you very much. I appreciate it. All right, more to cover on that as soon as we come back. Let’s take a break. We’ll come right back here in a moment. Fix-It Radio, KLZ 560.

SPEAKER 06 :
All right, we are back. Fix It Radio, KLZ 560. I was just telling Larry and… Charlie there during the break that I follow a guy. He’s a white hat hacker. That’s what they’re called. And I’ve literally watched this guy in real time hack into Wi-Fi systems, a computer that’s on the Wi-Fi network. I mean, you name it. This guy can literally take a very small handheld flipper device and literally be into those systems in a matter of not minutes, seconds. It’s fascinating. But that’s the technology that Some of these guys have. If they’re really good at what they do, they can really be in and be solid. Now, this is more drive radio than it is fix-it radio, but it applies because it’s in the house. It’s what you’re doing and so on. Steve had mentioned the whole key fob end of things and car theft and so on. Yes, car theft is big. One of the biggest ways they’re doing that is they’re picking up the receiver of the key fob itself. We’ve talked about this in the past, but I want to remind people that your key fob, is sending a signal out, it is checking in with that car routinely. The only way to stop that is to either have the car in the garage and then keep it out of sight and out of mind is kind of how that works with thieves, so that’s one way to handle things. The other side of that that you can do is put your key fobs, because in most cases you’ll have more than one, Put them in a Faraday bag. They’re on Amazon for $10 or $15. I looked this up the other day for somebody when we were talking about it on air, and you can literally put those key fobs in a Faraday bag. They will not then send that signal out to that vehicle, and there’s no way that a thief rolling by can pick that up. There’s actually video of, in some cases, this is organized crime. In a lot of cases, it’s organized crime. They’ve got very sophisticated tooling. They’ve got a fairly sophisticated antenna system whereby they’re literally walking up and down sidewalks trying to pick up particular vehicles that they may want to take and trying to figure out if they can pick up the key fob signal because if they can, they can intercept that, create their own key, if you would, quote unquote, and literally drive off with your vehicle and no one’s a wiser.
SPEAKER 10 :
It doesn’t take them long.
SPEAKER 06 :
No, they can do all of this in a matter of a few minutes, and as people are sleeping and not really paying attention and so on, reality is you’re not going to know they’re doing that until you wake up the next morning and your car is gone, and even if you have a security camera, maybe you’re looking the night before. And back to Steve’s point a moment ago, these guys are sophisticated enough that if you’re using any of the Wi-Fi-driven security systems, they’re jamming that, and you’re not going to see what they’re doing anyway. So at the end of the day… they’re useless really at the end of the day. So point being, if you have a nice high-end car, in fact, look and see what some of the hottest cars stolen are, if you’re owning one of those cars. Right now, some of the hottest cars being stolen in the way that I just said are cars that are high performance and or supercharged. So think Hellcats, think Raptors, think anything with a supercharger on it. They are stealing those cars. faster than they are some of the other models. I’m guessing because their resale value is probably a little higher and they can do more with that vehicle and get more money back out of it when it’s all said and done. But yes, that is one of the ways that they’re actually able to steal your car. Like I said, this is probably more of a drive radio conversation, but you guys are driving, you’re pulling up at home and does apply to what we do here on Fix It Radio because, as I’ve said, for a lot of you listening, and this includes some of you that have family and neighbors and so on, if you have the ability to park inside and you aren’t because you have too much junk in the garage, then fix that. Put the car in the garage and fix the other side of it. In other words, what junk do you have? We’ve talked about this on this program so many times in the past. Every time I talk about it, I get lots of comments in from people that keep saying, they keep saying keep talking about that john because everybody needs a reminder to get rid of some of this stuff but yeah if you’re basically you know not able to park in the garage because of too much stuff a figure out what that stuff is can it be better organized or do you even need said stuff or does some of that stuff larry just need to go bye-bye well in some cases it’s even cheaper just to build yourself a little shed Yeah, that’s an option too. And for some of you, that could be, you know, there’s sheds that are pre-made. There’s sheds you can put that attach to the side of your house. There’s sheds that are standalone. Some of you have attic space where you could put some things in attics. Some of you have crawl spaces. Some of you have other storage capabilities. Again, just think outside the box. I am not a fan of, I’m going to say this straight up, sorry storage unit folks as we look out to the west and literally we look down on these and Larry and Charlie and I look every week at the people that come and go down here. I’m not a fan. of buying a storage unit just to go store your stuff in. Now, if you’ve got a lot of things and it’s pertinent to your business or maybe family things and so on and they’re things that you just have to keep for whatever reason and it’s taking up garage space that you could be parking in, if you’ve got the means and the ability, sure, go rent a storage unit, put all that stuff in there and park in your garage because now you’re just more secure. And those of you that park in garages, you know what I mean by this. Once you start doing that, you’ll never stop.
SPEAKER 10 :
Well, it’s just so convenient, especially in the wintertime.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, it’s night and day. I mean, those of you that do, you know exactly what I mean. Those of you that don’t, you don’t know what you’re missing. Parking in a garage, yes, I know this is a first-world problem and thing. I get that. I fully understand, and I’m very blessed to be able to park in a garage and have for years and years, and I’m very thankful to be able to do that. But if you have never done that, you’re missing out. And some of you have garages. You just can’t park in them.
SPEAKER 10 :
Unfortunately.
SPEAKER 06 :
So fix that. And there’s ways to do that. There’s even businesses out there that will help you with the removal of certain items. There’s the junk guys. There’s guys that will drop off a dumpster. There’s bag dumpsters now where you can fill up the bag and they haul things off. You can haul it yourself. You can hire a company to come do it. There’s numerous ways to get rid of things, and my point there is just be meaningful in what those things are and determine what you need and don’t need. Now, there’s another way you can do that. You can actually take, and this is what we kind of did with some of my folks’ stuff, you can mark things. You go to the office supply store, Amazon, whatever, and you can buy colored stickers. They make little round colored stickers. White, red, yellow, whatever. And you can take those stickers and then put those upon the things that you know you either need to save or you’re thinking about throwing away or this, in fact, is going to get thrown away. You can also do it in piles. You can do it that way as well. But bottom line, go through and organize the things that you have and determine what it is you want to get rid of. And at the end of the day, Complete that process. Not that hard, Larry.
SPEAKER 10 :
No, it isn’t. And the other thing you ought to consider is every city has a bulk pickup program.
SPEAKER 06 :
Very good point.
SPEAKER 10 :
That you can use. And for senior citizens, they also offer a significant reduction in cost to do that.
SPEAKER 06 :
Good point. Yep. So, again, there’s ways to do this. And it’s part of what I was talking about with interior organization. This is one of the things that really I had down as a topic today is, okay, how do you get things more organized internally? And in this case, we’re talking garage. But you know what? This could be everything from a garage. It could be… closet inside it could be a crawl space it could be the basement itself could be your attic it could be your storage shed as Larry just mentioned a moment ago you know go through and again we’ve a really nice weekend to be able to stop and do some of these things determine what it is that you really want to keep things that you have to keep things that you know are special to you but be careful even on that is it special to you
SPEAKER 10 :
And that’s most of the case.
SPEAKER 06 :
In only you? Yep. Or is it special to others that you might pass that down to? If you come down to the fact that it’s only special to you and you’re the only one that cares about it, why are you hanging on to it?
SPEAKER 10 :
Well, it goes back to what we were talking about during the Christmas time is when you have people over, if there’s things that you think they might want, ask them.
SPEAKER 06 :
And for those of you that are getting up in age, and I say up in age, Mark Ernst, he just joined us, so he would apply to this as well. He’s not young either. I mean, none of us are young. I mean, all of us, as time goes by, start aging. And as we raise kids and families and then kids leave and they start going away and it ends up just being empty nester end of things. And here’s my point with that. Even as your kids maybe are growing up, but those of you especially that are in the empty nest end of things, yeah, by all means, start looking at the things that you have. Do you need all of those items? And Larry has talked about this in the past, and it’s a good tip. When people come over to the house, the kids, the grandkids, if there’s certain items that you’re wondering, are they going to want these things or not, ask them. I mean, you’re not dead yet. Ask them. There’s nothing wrong with that.
SPEAKER 10 :
Well, if they say no, it doesn’t hurt you, does it?
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, it shouldn’t. Don’t let it hurt your feelings. If they say no, no, dad, no, mom, no, I really don’t want that. Okay, then you know what? Determine what you’re going to do with that particular item moving forward and do something with it. Because if they’re not going to want it, why are you keeping it?
SPEAKER 10 :
Unless you absolutely want it.
SPEAKER 06 :
If it’s something that you want to keep, then more power to you. I’m not telling anybody to get rid of something that they shouldn’t. But in a lot of cases… I think a lot of us, and this is true even for us as shop owners and myself, Mark and Larry have all been there. Larry and I used to do it. Mark still does. But even sometimes as businesses, we hang on to something.
SPEAKER 09 :
Tools, equipment.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, piece of equipment, tool, whatever. And we think, oh, well, I might need that someday. Well, you know, that someday – I’ll give you an example. So my wife and I were talking about this last night, and we had some friends we were discussing a few things with. And something came up about – I saw an ad on – that’s what it was. I saw an ad on one of the TVs for one of the – franchise brake companies, and they were turning a rotor. And I’m like, well, that’s the dumbest ad I’ve ever seen. We haven’t turned rotors in eons. I don’t know why there’s a brake lathe even in the commercial. The industry hasn’t turned rotors forever. So I started the comment, and I’m like, well, on the same token, you haven’t replaced brake linings on brake shoes for eons. I learned how to do that way back in the day. When I first started, you actually took the linings, you would drill out the rivets, you would put new linings on, and then there’s a machine whereby you then put the brake shoe itself into a machine that’s an arc machine that makes sure that you have the right arc. It’s a little grinder, and you set it up correctly, and you re-arc the the shoe to make sure that it’s got the right arc to be adequate for you know fitting inside of the drum and and all of the shoe surface hitting so it didn’t have to wear in but everything hit originally well guess what i own one of those machines Which will never be used because, you know, even some of the old stuff from back in the day where I guess you could still buy linings and things. I mean, the reality is you’re going to buy a complete assembly. It’s already put together, done, handled. You’re not going to buy just linings. And the safety factor of that is the biggest reason why we went away from that. But at the end of the day, do I still own that machine and do I need to do something with it? It’s an antique. I get it. Somebody might want it. But for me personally, I’m never going to use it. It’s just taking up space and I need to figure out how to get that thing sold and gone and done because I’ll never use it.
SPEAKER 10 :
Well, in reality, there’s not many cars that have drum brakes anyway.
SPEAKER 06 :
Not new cars. You’ve got to get way back into the old stuff to even do that. Jeff in Montana, go ahead.
SPEAKER 13 :
Hey, good morning, Jeff.
SPEAKER 06 :
Good morning, Jeff.
SPEAKER 13 :
Quick question about Steve. Is he back from Hawaii? Did he call from Hawaii?
SPEAKER 06 :
Oh, I didn’t ask him. You know what? I didn’t think to ask. I apologize. I didn’t ask him.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, it sounded like he was back in the spring.
SPEAKER 06 :
He may be.
SPEAKER 13 :
So welcome back.
SPEAKER 06 :
That’s right. That’s right.
SPEAKER 13 :
You had picked the perfect weekend to be gone.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yes, I did. Especially in Arizona where it was warmer. Yes, I did. I got lucky.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yes, you did. Yeah, you did. So Wi-Fi security. I know a little bit about it. I’m an expert in it at all, but You’re saying that there’s nothing you can do to secure a network?
SPEAKER 06 :
Nope. Not the way these new hackers have devices that can literally roll through and in a matter of seconds figure out whatever you think your strong password is. Yeah, they can figure it out in a matter of seconds. If they really want to. Now, I will say this, Jeff, that in most cases, for most of us, we’re such small potatoes, probably not a big thing. The only time that’s an issue is if, again, if they want to jam up your cameras and they want to do something along those lines because they’re trying to steal a car in your driveway, okay, yeah, you’re going to be a little more susceptible to that than somebody that is out in the middle of Timbuktu like you and I. I mean, no offense for you and I. It’s a non-issue for me because I don’t know what they’re going to get once they get in anyways.
SPEAKER 13 :
I can see him coming from over a mile away, so yeah, it’s going to be really hard.
SPEAKER 06 :
Not to burst anybody’s bubble, but yeah, there really is no, I mean, when it comes to the true hackers that know exactly what they’re doing and have the device in their hand, no, there is no protection, Jeff.
SPEAKER 13 :
Okay, because there’s about four different levels of security, Wi-Fi security. The oldest one, WEP, is not secure at all. I mean, it’s been known for years. But the strongest one, WPA3, is supposed to provide a very, very good level of protection. So I’m just wondering if they’re taking advantage of networks that are out there that are not – Not secured to the maximum.
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, this white hat hacker that I follow is on Ryan’s show all the time. And he does lots of interviews, and I see different clips of him. And you know that this is a high-end show where you guarantee they’re going to have the highest level of security they possibly can, given what they do, Sean Ryan. And he can hack into his in a matter of seconds.
SPEAKER 13 :
Wow.
SPEAKER 06 :
He shows it. Yeah, shows it, proves it, and so on. Absolutely. Absolutely. I mean, it really is. I mean, I watch it just because to me, Jeff, it’s just fascinating to see what these guys can do now. And he’s the good guy. What he’s trying to tell everybody is, listen, I’m the good guy and I can do this. Look out for the nefarious guys that are doing things that they really shouldn’t be doing.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, that’s called white hat hacking. The white hats out there protect us against the black hats.
SPEAKER 10 :
Well, and I would think that the black hats are the ones that are out there going after corporate issues, not necessarily the private sector.
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, that, and depending upon what maybe your job is and what kind of things you might be doing at home, and maybe you’re a work-from-home individual and you’re working for somebody that they may want to have some… you know, pertinent info and such. I mean, I’ve always said that, you know, no offense, Jeff, the things that I do and most people even like me. I mean, okay, hack into my stuff. I don’t know what you’re really going to find at the end of the day. You know, you might find, in my case even, I don’t even keep bank accounts and things like that stored anywhere. I keep all that internally into the banking end of things itself. So the reality for me is they’re not going to find anything. So have at it. Have fun.
SPEAKER 13 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 06 :
But I think there are people out there, even people right now listening, that have higher-level jobs and do things that, yeah, Jeff, they’d be a lot more susceptible to things like that than even you and I would be.
SPEAKER 13 :
So a year or two ago, you had a guy who’d been down to one of the car sales, and he had a… you could put around the battery in your key fob and it would actually turn it off after 30 seconds or a minute or something. Correct. Is that in effect anymore? You know what?
SPEAKER 06 :
I haven’t talked to them. I found them at SEMA. That was three years ago I talked about that, so it’s been a while now. I’ll have to reach back out and see. They’re a Canadian company, and I did not see them at SEMA this past year, so I don’t know whether that’s something that took off and really worked well or if they went under. I don’t know. I don’t know.
SPEAKER 13 :
Okay. It would be interesting to find out if you can.
SPEAKER 06 :
I’ll do some research. Truthfully, until you reminded me of that, I totally forgot about them.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yep, sure. Okay, thanks.
SPEAKER 06 :
I’ll do that. I’ll reach back out and let you guys know what I find on that. Again, some of where this came up from was, hey, Steve, talking about the Wi-Fi end of things and dovetailing that into, yeah, those of you that have high-end vehicles whereby maybe you’re not parked in the garage or maybe you’re visiting a friend’s house or a kid’s house or whatever, yeah, you could be very susceptible for that. So some of you even that have those types of vehicles that travel – maybe you’re parking in a hotel uh things like that yeah i i would i would have a you know the faraday bags that i just mentioned that are on amazon for 10 15 bucks you could throw them in suitcase glove box whatever they’re really easy really handy if you’re going to be parked in a situation like that and again i know it’s more of a drive radio topic but i would throw my key fob into a faraday bag if you’re parked at you know your kids house grandkids house the the motel may be on the way or whatever i yeah i would do that because i have seen in fact some of you have texted me situations where guys have had their complete rig so truck trailer the whole nine yards parked out in front of a motel and it’s gone the next morning when they wake up and they guarantee you they’re doing that the way i just mentioned they’re not breaking in they’re figuring out how to use the rolling code coming out of your key fob they’re duplicating that they’re hopping in the vehicle and off they go so It is a problem, and again, the best way to take care of that, and it’s simple. I mean, think about this. Some of these guys are losing hundreds of thousands of dollars of stuff to these thieves that a $15 Faraday bag would have protected. Now, granted, they’ve got insurance and so on, but still, you’ve got deductibles and hassles and so on, and literally for $15. You could fix the problem that we’re talking about relatively easily. So I get it. That’s more of a drive radio topic, but it does apply to fix it radio because it is something that you’re going to do around the house as well. And you just got to get in the habit of doing that if you have to park outside or, as I mentioned a moment ago, if you have to travel around and you’re parking your rig someplace else that you wouldn’t normally have access to be parked inside and so on. that’s something you may think about having. So really, for all of us, it might be something you want to just have on hand at all times just in case you travel or do anything along those lines. So that’s it for Fix It Radio. We appreciate you all listening. If you’re listening to a replay show, it’s fixitradio.com. And don’t forget the text line, 307-200-8222. This is KLZ 560.
