Does everybody know what time it is? Fix It Radio!
John Rush (Host) :
It’s Fix It Radio, KLZ 560. Thanks for joining us today. We appreciate it very much. Beautiful day, November the 2nd. Don’t forget to fall back. Tonight, that’s I think at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning is when you actually fall back. But most people do that before. Anymore, most people don’t change clocks at all because everything’s so digitized. But those of you that still have analog clocks, you can either set those back tonight or first thing in the morning. This is the time change we have where it doesn’t make you late the next day if you forget. In fact, it will make you early if you forget. So not as big of a deal as it is in March when we go back the other way. I wish they’d just leave it on daylight saving time all the time and leave it alone and not go back and forth. But some people like… Standard time, I’m not one of them. I’ll be the first to tell you I do not like standard time at all. I hate the darkness at, you know, 4.30 at night in the winter months. And as we even get closer to the equinox in December, it gets worse and worse. And I’m not a fan of that at all. So I’m one that would prefer the extra hour of daylight, especially in the winter. And I love it in the summer. And for those that love standard time, I guess in the summertime, they like having it light at 4 a.m. instead of 5 a.m. So in the middle of summer, it’s it’s light, you know, at about 5 a.m. with daylight saving time. And if you back that up an hour, it would be light at about 4 a.m. So it’s always my argument back to folks like standard time and light. The old argument of, you know, well, the farmers need this, the farmers need that, and this, that. That’s all total BS, by the way, to make a hill of beans bit of difference. The animals and all of the things that they do on a daily basis, they run off of the daylight itself, not what the clock says. So anyways, will we ever get full daylight saving time? Who knows? Hard to say. Again, I would prefer it. It would be nice if the whole country did it. This hodgepodge of certain states doing certain things and – certain sections of certain states doing certain things. I think Indiana’s that way, isn’t it, Charlie, where some of it’s daylight saving time and some of it is not. It’s the goofiest thing ever. But anyways, speaking of that, though, the reason why I wanted to mention the time change is there was an article this last week on Nine News. And it’s just a fact. I mean, they reported on it, but I’m sure some other agencies may have done the same thing as well. News agencies may have done the same thing. But Nine News. dinner time burglaries reported in Arapahoe County. So what I wanted to talk about today on Fix-It Radio, because this applies, I think, to some of the security measures that we talk periodically on Fix-It Radio, and I’ll get into some other things today in regards to furnace and heating your home and so on as we have time, but I really did want to talk about with the time change, it will now be dark in your area, in your neighborhood, five o’clock at the latest, and that will slowly tick earlier and earlier each day. So if I look, for example, at sunset tonight, is at 5 55 so tomorrow night sunset will be 4 55 sunday night and moving moving on down the line through standard time it’ll be even before you know that sunset granted it’s not totally dark then you’ve got i don’t know depending on the cloud cover and how things are and so on you might have up to 30 minutes of more daylight before it’s you know pitch dark and the street lights and all that have illuminated and so on but my point is it’s darker earlier These are burglaries that happened typically on Friday nights. Between February and October 18th, almost $1 million in stolen goods. Nine different thefts, meaning these guys must have been targeting particular homes, watching people’s patterns. When are they there? When are they not? I’m guessing these are individuals that must have not had any kind of security cameras. They were typically homes that, and this is for those of you listening, this is a reminder as well. These were homes that backed up to open space and or golf courses. Things along those lines where they were heavily shaded but easily accessible. So think about that with your own home. Heavily shaded, but easily accessible. If that’s your home, you probably should do some things to make sure you’ve got the right security cameras in place, motion detectors or lighting, things along those lines. And I’ve talked about that in the past. You can look at fixitradio.com and find some of those previous shows where I’ve talked about some of those measures. But it’s just a reminder this time of the year. And it really should be reminded of it all of the year. But just a reminder that, you know, there’s people out there that weren’t raised like me. I was raised to where if you left your house completely unlocked and the doors were wide open, would I enter across your threshold or, frankly, would I even enter up into your yard? Unless I had a reason to be there to talk to you, the answer is no. That’s how I was raised. You could leave the keys in the car. It could be running for all I care. I might go up and shut the car off just to help you out because you might have forgotten it, but am I going to hop in your car and steal it? No. That’s just how I was raised. You could leave a gold bar on your front step and would I take it? No, it’s not mine. It does not belong to me. That’s how I was raised. Problem is, we haven’t taught several generations what I just said. We haven’t taught them that if it’s not yours, don’t touch it. So in turn, we have to be more diligent in making sure that our stuff stays our stuff and somebody else doesn’t grab it. I was watching, just to prove my point, I was watching some news this morning on, you know, the L.A. Dodgers won the World Series. Good for them, by the way. Congratulations. My brother was a big Dodgers fan, so congratulations, Dodgers, and those of you that are Dodgers fans. But the looting that went on after the win, I just think to myself, what are you people doing? These are boarded up stores that they basically took the plywood down. One Nike store they literally emptied out. Police are watching, not really doing anything about it, and the store is just getting emptied out. And what people don’t realize is that costs all of us money. If you’re somebody that buys Nike products, those shrinkages, those thefts, get factored back into the cost of those businesses, and those people will pay more money down the road. It’s so stupid. It’s almost like, do you not have a brain? Of course, the answer is no, they don’t. Because if they had a brain, they wouldn’t steal stuff in the first place. But my point is, these are evidently people that have been brought up that what belongs to someone else isn’t really theirs. It must belong to you. And you can just go steal it and take it. It’s not a big deal. I don’t understand that mentality. And a lot of you listening are probably agreeing with me right now, 100% saying, yeah, I don’t understand this either. I grew up, yes, in this area. Boulder was where I was raised. East Boulder, basically. But we’d go to town quite a bit. And I remember, Charlie probably does as well when you were a kid. I remember we’d go to the store. My mom just left the keys in the car. I don’t know that she ever took the keys out of the car. You’d pull up to the store, and it doesn’t matter whether we were going in for haircuts or she was going in to buy a dress. Or my mom used to sew a lot back in the day, and she would go into the material store. I don’t remember what you call those specifically, Charlie. But, you know, you’d go into the material store, and she’d buy a pattern. And I hated that. By the way, those are the trips I hated the most. It was like, oh, so boring. Looking at just, you know. What do they call those things, Charlie, that the material’s on? A bolt or something? What’s it called? A bolt. Okay, yeah, so the bolts of material. And, you know, my mom would be in there looking at all, and it’s just so boring. Anyways, I’m digressing, but I can remember going shopping with my mom at a young age, and you just left the keys in the car. You didn’t lock anything up. You didn’t lock the house. That’s how I grew up. Yeah, I’m old, but not that old. And it’s amazing that in 50 years’ time, roughly, we’ve gone from that to where you better have everything bolted or screwed down or it’s not going to last no matter what neighborhood you’re in. And I’m not exaggerating when I say that. So point being, for your home, because this is Fix-It Radio, make sure you’ve got those things dialed in. I was reading the local Facebook page. I live over in kind of the Arvada area, and I was reading the Facebook page the other day. Somebody posted, if you’re the person that stole my claw tub that had my planters in it, please bring it back. And I’m thinking, really? You’re basically stealing, in my opinion. I get it. Claw tubs have some value, and they’re very decorative in the situation that this one must have been in. But I’m thinking to myself, that’s more trouble than it’s worth. Those things are heavy. By the way, one guy didn’t take that. That I can assure you. That wasn’t a one individual that picked that claw tub up and threw it in the back of the truck and hauled it off. That was a team effort by someone. So where I’m going again is you better make sure you have your things dialed in. Nail down security cameras, whatever else you want to have to make sure that you’re protecting the things that you own the best you can. And the modern camera systems, again, I’ve talked about these before, but the modern camera systems have the ability to alert you the minute somebody crosses a particular break in that camera. You can change the sensitivities, the coverage areas and so on. You can set them to where… If it’s an animal, it doesn’t set it off, but if it’s a person, it does. If it’s a car, it does. All sorts of ways you can do these things now. Everything from battery-operated, wirelessly controlled, to wired in, and they record 24-7. And everything in between. Pick your poison. There’s really, in my opinion, no favorites. If you’re looking for a very, very simple, easy-to-use system that works extremely well, that is the Blink system. Amazon sells them. And if you want constant monitoring after, it’s $10 a month. And it’s about as cheap of a system as you’ll find. And I’m not exaggerating when I say that. It’s like $9 a month, I want to say, maybe. around 10 bucks and the cost of the equipment is minimal you could put three cameras up you know a couple out front even a doorbell type camera one in the back you watch your backyard and literally do all of that for 100 bucks or so it’s really minimal compared to what you risk in losing it’s very very minimal now lighting is another big deal i wanted to talk about that today as well lighting is a big issue like I was talking about with these homes. These were well, you know, backed up to open space or some type of open area, larger lot, something along those lines. And from the sounds of the amount of dollars they stole, probably higher end homes. And well shaded, meaning once the thieves got in, nobody really knew they were there. So you need to take a walk about your own property and look and see what do I need to do to make sure that I’m fully protected in this area. And, Frank, I wouldn’t go without them. That’s my own opinion. In today’s world, I wouldn’t go without them. Something even as simple as a doorbell cam most people should have today. So do your research. Find out what you need to do along those lines. Make sure things are well lit. And again, even as far as the motion lights and so on, you can hire an electrician or a handyman to come out and help you put those things up. But the reality is there’s so many of them today that are out there that are made that even operate off of battery power, solar power. The need to actually run electrical wires to them is really, it’s not essential anymore. You don’t have to. Sorry, electricians. you can put up motion sensor lights anymore that are very reliable very robust and again as soon as that thief or that you know you know potential individual nefarious individual would walk into the motion sensing area the light comes on and in a lot of cases this article even talks about that a piece police will tell you in a lot of cases that’s one of the first things that will run them off now i also know from reading lots of articles over the years the next best protector from having people enter your home as a dog. I don’t think it even matters. Most thieves know that any kind of a dog’s going to be a distraction, and they don’t know whether the dog’s friendly or mean, and they’ll just avoid it and move on. It’s sort of like a club on your car. Only those that are really intent on taking it will bother with the club. But the average thief will just look at that, say, yeah, that’s too much trouble. I’m going to the next one that’s much easier. They do the same thing when it comes to a pet and a dog. If they notice your home has, especially a large dog, they don’t know if that dog’s friendly. It may look friendly to you, and it probably is to you. Probably is to the neighbors and the kids, but will it be to a stranger? In most cases, no. It depends on the dog. But here’s the thing. The burglar, the thief doesn’t know that. They’re not going to take that risk. They don’t know if the dog’s friendly. Again, it’s one more thing for them to have to mess with that they don’t want to deal with and they’ll move on. So that’s another great deterrent. And some people are pet people, some are not. I fully understand that. Not everybody is. Some people, because of the lifestyle and traveling and so on, they don’t really have the ability to handle pets. I get that. And if that’s you, I fully understand. But for some of you that have pets, that’s something else to think about and kind of make sure that maybe even your pet is pretty visible if and when you’re not around. So something to think about. But bottom line, I want you to stay safe. I want you to understand how to prevent some of these things. And the one thing that I always… am on people about is if you have a car and you own a house with a garage and you don’t park in your garage my question is why i usually know the answer because i drive around different neighborhoods at times and look normally it’s because there’s so much stuff in the garage you can’t park in it so my advice is Even now, as we’re heading into the winter months, get one of the junk folks to drop off something to throw junk into, decide what you no longer need in the garage, and toss it. And then park in your garage. The likelihood of a thief breaking into your garage and stealing your car is much, much, much lower than it is if it’s just parked in your driveway or out on the street. So my advice, if you’ve got the ability to park in the garage and you can’t because of what I just said, take care of that problem. Clean things out. Throw things away. And some of you may come back and say, well, but I’m storing such and such a stuff. Okay, so tell them that. Hey, you’re on a deadline. I’ve stored this stuff for X amount of time. I’m going to park in my garage, and you’ve got X amount of time to either figure out how to get a storage locker, how to do this, how to do that, or I’m tossing this stuff, one of the two. I know that sounds really harsh, but it’s your garage. You’re paying for it. They’re not. Why are you storing it? Why are you hanging on to that junk? And we all have junk, myself included, and I throw stuff away on a pretty routine basis. But you need to do the same thing and make sure you can park in the garage. Another way to stay safe and bypass some of the things that we’re talking about. And last but not least, make sure that you have the ability to keep your garage door locked, all of that. i like the smart garage door opener some might argue with me on that but i like them because you can tell at any given time is your door open or closed your overhead door is it open is it closed you can even remotely control it i highly recommend those because of what we’re talking about right now so Also, and I just got a text message on this, security systems for your home. In today’s world, I don’t leave the house without arming my security system too. Yes, that’s another way to look at it. And there are simple security systems made. There is a system made by Simple Safe. Simple Safe. No, I’m not a spokesman for them. But if you want a really simple, easy-to-use alarm system that will work no matter what, Even in the case of a power outage, they’ve got battery backup and cell service. So if you want a really simple alarm system and you don’t want to pay the big money to the alarm companies to do it, just order your own simple, safe system. They walk you through with videos how to install it. It’s extremely simple. That’s why it’s called Simple Safe, and I’m not exaggerating. It’s one of the easiest things to put in. I would highly recommend you get one of those. All right, Fix It Radio, we’re going to take a quick break. We’ll come right back. Our line, by the way, 303-477-5600. The text line, 307-200-8222. And if you’re listening to the replay, you can text me a question, and I’ll answer it that way as well. We’ll be right back, though. This is Fix It Radio, KLZ 560.

Fix-It Radio, KLZ 560. Thank you all for joining us today. We appreciate it very much. Larry Unger, who normally is with us, he’s out on a little knee replacement and has some therapy and stuff. I talked to him today. He’s doing great. He should be back with us next week. But he said, speaking of home security, don’t forget Christmas is coming, which also gives thieves a reason to invade your home or car. Larry, thank you for that. Yes, absolutely. So we’re getting into that time of the year. We’re more of a target than ever. John and Cheyenne, go ahead.
Caller (Guest) :
Hey, John, quick question, little change of the subject. That’s fine. But before that, I like the dusk to dawn lights on your house.
John Rush (Host) :
Good idea.
Caller (Guest) :
They just leave on and they turn off during the day. I have them on my front door and my side door. And this way they just come on and off on their own. And if we’re home, when we lock up for the night, we just turn them off. But the nice thing is when you’re away, they’ll come on every evening. and that helps with the doorbell camera also because now there’s light if the sensor goes off.
John Rush (Host) :
Makes sense.
Caller (Guest) :
I haven’t figured out how to adjust the sensitivity, and every now and then I’ll have a pronghorn or something just walk by the front of the house and set it off when nobody’s home. Not a big deal.
John Rush (Host) :
That’s not a problem most have, by the way.
Caller (Guest) :
No, no. But just your opinion, I’ve been doing my research on garage door openers, And the new sidewinders look like really good and easier to install than hanging track and everything.
John Rush (Host) :
I agree. I have had a few comments on the side openers. Some people hate them. I’ve had some people that love them. I have some of them on my overhead shop doors, and they work extremely well. So I’m not sure, John, whether some that don’t like them have had some previous issues, maybe not installed correctly. I mean, I don’t know. To me, they seem, especially those of you where you’re looking to have more people height inside the garage. Maybe you’re trying to even store some stuff up above, or some of you may even want to put a lift in your garage. In that case, yeah, you can’t have that garage door opener hanging from the ceiling.
Caller (Guest) :
No, and it’s, you know, in the pole barn, it’s 30 by 40, but it’s only the ones I’ve looked at are only about 50 bucks different than the other ones.
John Rush (Host) :
On that particular situation, like my shop doors, John, I would put the ones that go up on the wall.
Caller (Guest) :
Yeah, I’m thinking the same thing, because You know, what you’re spending extra, you would be spending in getting, like, angle iron to hang it down on, you know, the track and stuff.
John Rush (Host) :
Plus, it’s just in the way is the other thing.
Caller (Guest) :
Yeah, it’s in the way, and it’s harder to work on if you have to fix it. Correct. You know, you’re in the middle of the shop. You’ve got to probably get a taller ladder. Maybe not, but I just was wondering what you thought of them. You see them a lot in bigger shops. Yeah, like mine.
John Rush (Host) :
I mean, like I said, I’ve got them on ours, and I’ve got some really tall, heavy doors, and we’ve had little to no problems with them after putting them in four years ago now, I want to say.
Caller (Guest) :
Yeah, and mine’s just a 10-foot wide by 8-foot high standard garage door. You’ll be fine. No, it’s just you haven’t heard it. I couldn’t find really any bad reviews on them online when I did research.
John Rush (Host) :
And, again, I’ve gotten some quote-unquote reviews from listeners, and, again, I don’t know the particular circumstances of them, who installed them, how old they are, and so on. I think the new LiftMaster stuff is fine, frankly.
Caller (Guest) :
And then one other thing. What is the Wi-Fi range, if you know, on, like, a Blink camera? Not a camera. I want to get the – they have it, and I have a Blink already, and I have the little – you know, module, I just would have to connect with an additional device. It’s probably 75 feet, maybe a little less, maybe 60 feet from the house to the front of the pole barn. And I was thinking of putting one of the motion sensor lights, like they have the spotlights connected to the blink. Do you think that would reach that device? It’ll be close.
John Rush (Host) :
You’ll have to give that a whirl. It’ll be close. If not, you’ll have to put another blink, you know, base station in.
Caller (Guest) :
Yeah, the problem with that is there’s really no Wi-Fi service out by my barn. I’d have to boost the Wi-Fi then.
John Rush (Host) :
I see. I see.
Caller (Guest) :
Yeah. You’ve got to remember, John, I am… I can’t see a cell tower from my house.
John Rush (Host) :
Right, right. Well, and did you probably, did you put a sleeve or anything in where you could run a Cat5 cable out to the barn or anything?
Caller (Guest) :
Oh, yeah, yeah. I sleeved the whole thing.
John Rush (Host) :
You could run a Cat5 cable out there and do another, you know, just put another Wi-Fi hotspot out in the barn pretty easily.
Caller (Guest) :
Yeah. Oh, okay. That’d be a good idea.
John Rush (Host) :
That’s how I do mine.
Caller (Guest) :
Yeah, because I want to just get a motion sensor light, but Blink has a nice motion sensor light with a camera attached to it.
John Rush (Host) :
Actually, you use your regular camera, and you just use their base station, and it just runs off of D batteries.
Caller (Guest) :
Yeah, yeah.
John Rush (Host) :
Or the base for the light is what I’m trying to say. It runs off D batteries.
Caller (Guest) :
Yeah. Oh, you can’t run it off AC? No.
John Rush (Host) :
Uh, not the ones that I’m aware of. They run off of D batteries, their motion, uh, activated and the camera just snaps onto that.
Caller (Guest) :
Oh, okay. Okay. Yeah. Because we figured it would be just as easy if like we’re coming back at night to pull up in front of the, and just have the light come on. I don’t blame you. Absolutely. Um, okay. So yeah. And I like the blink. Tell it. I put the blink in and oh my gosh, just the doorbell camera. And it took like 20 minutes to get the whole thing up and start. And the hardest part was downloading the app and then syncing everything to the app. And that wasn’t hard. But let me rephrase. That took the longest amount of time to get the app set up and work.
John Rush (Host) :
Yes.
Caller (Guest) :
Putting everything else up is easy.
John Rush (Host) :
Absolutely.
Caller (Guest) :
Oh, yeah. Plug and play.
John Rush (Host) :
Yep.
Caller (Guest) :
And that’s the nice thing. All right, John. Well, thanks. You’re welcome. I’ll talk to you later.
John Rush (Host) :
All right, John. Appreciate you very much. Have a good rest of your day. Joe, you’re next. Go ahead.
Caller (Guest) :
John, three quick things with your garage doors. If you’re going away for a week or so, you’re going on a cruise, if you don’t have a lock on your garage doors, we all know, well, we should know that with a coat hanger, you can grab the cord, the emergency release cord, and release your garage door with a coat hanger. So a big bolt in the track so that nobody can, while you’re gone, just… reach in and pull your release cord and open your garage door.
John Rush (Host) :
Yeah, for some of you guys, they’re a little handier, might even have a pair of channel locks kicking around all year. You can also just take a pair of channel locks and just channel lock it right next to a roller and it ain’t opening.
Caller (Guest) :
Yeah, but again, it’s so easy to open a garage door. If they know you’re not home, it’s so easy to pop your garage. And even though you hit the lock on your garage door opener, That simply disables the garage door opener. It doesn’t prevent that emergency cord from being pulled.
John Rush (Host) :
Correct.
Caller (Guest) :
Which just frees it. And then, so, you want to do that. But that’s not what I call it. Two things. Have you talked about reversing the rotation on your ceiling fan yet?
John Rush (Host) :
No, I haven’t got there yet. I was going to do that here. I got off on this other stuff and haven’t got there yet.
Caller (Guest) :
Well, you want me to talk about it now?
John Rush (Host) :
Sure. No, go ahead. That’s fine. Yeah, absolutely.
Caller (Guest) :
All right. Ceiling fans have either a little chain or a little slide switch. on them that allows you to change the rotation. In the summer, you want your ceiling fan blowing down so that you feel a little breeze to keep you cool. But in the winter, you don’t want a breeze blowing on you because people say it’s drafty. So in the wintertime, you want to change the rotation on your ceiling fan so that it’s pulling up and not blowing down on you. A lot of people don’t even know that you can do that. They have no clue which way it’s been blowing all summer. But Anyway, your ceiling fan should blow down to give you a breeze in the summer, and it should suck up in the winter so you don’t feel the draft. So that’s one. The other thing is, I don’t know if you have a chance to look at it, but you know on some French doors, they have a little spring-loaded ball on top that pops into a little socket on the top of the door jamb.
John Rush (Host) :
A little catch mechanism.
Caller (Guest) :
I’ve got a couple of those, a little catch mechanism. And I saw this thing, and I actually installed a couple. instead of the ball and socket with clicks and noisy and sometimes you have to lubricate them, they now make a magnetic catch to replace the ball and socket. You put a little piece of foam on the jam and when you close it, there’s no more click, snap, pop. You just close the door and the magnet grabs it and the little foam, it’s silent. I don’t want to say virtually silent. It is absolutely silent. When you push that door closed, The magnet grabs it, and it’s absolutely dead silent. You don’t have to tug it. You don’t have to overcome that ball to get the ball out of the socket. If anybody’s got those, there is an option, which is a magnetic latch. You can just find them on Amazon, a magnetic door latch, which I think is a great idea.
John Rush (Host) :
That’s a great idea. No, I like that. Because like you say, the other ones, the problem with some of those is they can get goofy. And to your point, if you don’t lubricate them, they can get sticky and noisy. And I don’t know. They’re just a pain in the rear.
Caller (Guest) :
Yeah. So I think the one I ordered, I got a pair of them for $12, John. Nice. Because mostly if you’ve got French doors, you typically have two, one on each side. Yeah. I got a pair for $12, and it took me maybe five minutes aside to unscrew the old ball and socket and to install the two magnetic plates. And it even comes with a little piece of hard white foam that you just stick on the door jamb so that when it does close, it just presses up against that little foam.
John Rush (Host) :
Nice and quiet.
Caller (Guest) :
That’s my other nice and quiet. So that’s my suggestion for if you’ve got French doors.
John Rush (Host) :
Nice. Nice. Nothing wrong with that. That’s very nice.
Caller (Guest) :
All right, John, that’s all I got.
John Rush (Host) :
I appreciate it, Joe. Thank you very much. And really quick, back to John from Cheyenne. He was talking about the Blink system. And, yeah, for those of you that that’s an Amazon system, you can buy it right from them. Now, I also talked about the SimpleSafe alarm system. So do your research because SimpleSafe also has cameras that will go with the alarm system. So this is one of those things, and I’ve talked about this in the past, where you really need to sit down and determine what system do I want to use. The worst case is having a hodgepodge. You’re using SimpleSafe for the alarms, and you’ve got a camera system for all the cameras, which, by the way, you can do. But if you want everything in one place, do a little bit of research and figure out what the best alternative is for that. Now, some of you also are familiar with Google Home. Google Home is a Google app whereby a lot of companies that work with Google will allow you to add those devices into one single app so that, let’s say you have an alarm system and a camera system and something else and something else and something else. You get where I’m going with that. As long as all of them are compatible with Google Home, you can still see all of them in one app. also do a little bit of research there as well because in some cases you may find a really good deal on one item and a great deal on another and no they’re not the same but they’ll get you where you want to go and if they’re both compatible with google home they’re still able you’re still able to see those devices in google home so say for example you’ve got a camera system and you’ve got a security system and you’ve got smart thermostats If they’re Google compatible, you can see all of those devices through your Google Home app if you want to. So that’s something else to think about when you start looking at some of these quote unquote smart home devices. That includes even, you know, Joe from Jersey’s talked about some of the smart switches and things that are available along those lines as well. That’s something else that you can also use. you know look at as to will those switches and will what i’m looking at there coincide with in this case google home to where i can put everything inside of one app so that’s something to think about and you may want to go that route so we’ll be right back don’t go anywhere questions again you can call in 303-477-5600 or the text line 307-200-8222 fix it radio klz 560.

Hi, John. This will be quick. Sure. Joe, I think he’s in New Jersey, right? Yes, he is. When he was talking about somebody using, he said a coat hanger, but I would call it a Slim Jim, to latch on to that emergency release. I think I’ve shown you a picture of what I’ve done for 50 years in my garages. I just take that cord and turn it upside down. So the T-handle’s up at the top, and the cord at the bottom doesn’t have anything to grab onto. I mean, you could hook it all up. forever with a slim Jim, you’re not going to pull anything. That’s one. John in Cheyenne, I got a good cheap way to protect his pole barn. What he needs to do is get some white paint, not chalk, but a white paint, and paint the outline of a dead body right near his pole barn. Sprinkle it around a few spent. That’s not a bad idea. And then go to Walmart and buy the biggest dog bowl that they have and paint the name killer on the side.
John Rush (Host) :
Yeah, there you go. Not a bad idea. That’s not a bad idea.
SPEAKER 08 (Advertisement) :
I don’t think he’s old enough to remember this, but I’m a New Yorker, too. Not New York City, but New York State. They had a garbage strike when you’re talking about not locking your cars and stuff like that. I worked with a friend many years ago from Coldwater, Kansas, and he said his father, his mother, all their farm equipment, the teen cars, nobody ever took the keys out of them. That way anybody could drive anybody’s car. They went to town. They never took the keys out of the car. But in New York, and I think it was the early 70s, so John might have not been old enough or been in the Army, I don’t know. So they had this garbage strike, and people were… uh couldn’t get rid of their garbage so they got some big cardboard boxes packed their garbage in the cardboard boxes and wrapped them with gift wrap put them in the car and left the car doors open and their garbage was picked up that’s hilarious okay talk to you later i appreciate it bob nope thank you very much and yep those were definitely different times than we have today all right speaking of
John Rush (Host) :
sort of this security theme and and all of that joe thank you for the ceiling fan tip as well that’ll help a lot of you when it comes to the the heat of your home and some of you have ceiling fans some don’t just depends on your home a lot do a lot a lot of homes with ceiling fans yeah make sure you’re changing that direction uh right now and we haven’t talked about this in the last few weeks but it’s kind of assumed that it’s this time of the year where we’re switching from air conditioning to the heat time to change filters make sure everything’s all dialed in if you’ve got a high efficiency furnace you may want somebody to come out and actually service that because they take a little bit of different service than what you would typically find on a regular furnace and some of you may not even know if you have that if you’re unfamiliar with those things just get a a good hvac person whoever you would normally use to come out help you along those lines I’ve got several during the you know during the week you know Cub Creek and so on that can do that for you if worse comes to worse so we’ve got sponsors during the week that can help you with that also so at any rate most of you can do that yourself if not I can kind of direct you on what you need to do but along the security lines of things this is something Charlie sent me a few weeks back and I was kind of waiting for the right time to use this and I don’t know that I’ve ever covered this topic in the past if i have forgive me um my memory uh i don’t remember doing this but if i have i’m gonna do it again anyways and that is for some of you that have bought a home from someone else you bought a used home some of you live in new homes and this can even be the you know a factor there as well but a lot of you have bought homes from someone else at one point your you know the other party the seller took pictures and did all sorts of things and that realtor most likely through a particular service by the way not only uploaded those photos to their own website but then that populated among other websites as well realtor.com zillow and so on so Granted, there are previous pictures and you may have changed some things since those past pictures, but you need to double check that. So it’s a good idea periodically to go into the different sites that are out there. Realtor.com, Redfin, Zillow, and so on. Check your own address, your own house. What pictures are showing up? You really don’t want any pictures at all to show up, if at all possible. So in the way you do that is with each one of these services, you take ownership of the home. So you have to create an account and then you claim ownership of that home. Hopefully it hasn’t been claimed by someone else. Typically they’re open and somebody hasn’t, but claim ownership. And in doing so, you can then go in and change your home facts, who owns it if you want, some of the details of what’s the square footage and so on. If you want to make some adjustments to that, you can. But last but not least, the pictures. If you want to leave some pictures up, that’s your call. If you want to take pictures out, again, that’s your call. I would say you’re better off with less than more unless you’re trying to sell your home, of course. If you’re thinking of or want to sell your home, then, of course, you may want to do some things differently along these lines. But for most of you that are just trying to make things more secure, which is partly what we’ve been talking about in today’s show. is go in there and delete anything that would show internal pictures, even folks’ backyard pictures, side pictures. I mean, some of the things we’re talking about when it comes to security, don’t give a thief any more ability to look at what you have going on other than what they can pick up off of satellite images from Google, which, remember, they’re there also. you that’s another area to check what does your house look like from the different applications that are out there google google earth apple and so on they’ll be different by the way they’re not always the same they don’t all use the same satellite companies to give them those images you can through google also do street view what does that look like and that’s one where i’m not super technical on that end of things that i just haven’t looked i’m not sure that if there’s something in particular in the google home view you know as the cars the camera cars driving by your particular street in your home i don’t know with google if you can go in and actually change What’s shown, that I don’t know. And if one of you out there listening has more expertise on that, please call in and let us know, 303-477-5600, or send me a text message, 307-200-8222. And even if that’s during the week through the replay and you hear this and you want to give me some updates on that, please do, and I’ll update folks next weekend. So if you know how to go into Google on the Street View and either block that, gray it out, fuzzy it out, change it, whatever, please let me know. Some of you may have, you know, maybe the car drove by and your garage door was up. And there’s things in your garage you don’t necessarily want people seeing. Again, I’m going to get into some of that on the security side here in just one moment. But there may be things in Google Street View, and if you haven’t checked that, you don’t know what it looks like. And even if you checked that a year ago, they will update things. Check it again. You should probably about once a quarter go in and check what does your street view and things look like for your home. What does the overhead satellite image look like for your home? How close can you zoom in? What can you see and so on? Because again, folks, these are things, and we talked about those thieves earlier, $1 million in nine homes of things they stole. I guarantee you those were cased out in some ways, just like I’m talking. You literally can get on Google and zoom into different areas and say, well, you look like a pretty wealthy neighborhood. Let’s see who has the best access off of XYZ open space. You can tell what the foliage is like and all of that based on the images I’m telling you. Believe me, and it’s good and bad. This is where technology can be good. It can be bad. Back in the old days, you had to literally go walk someplace to see what it looked like. Nowadays, no offense, I can go to some village in Africa and see what it looks like. And I’m not exaggerating. If you don’t believe me, go look. You can pretty much look at anything you want to on planet Earth with some of the tools I just mentioned. So in your own home, could be your own business, double check what I just said. And what does that look like? Now, really quick, some of you that have businesses, by the way, a tip for that, sometimes your business listing and the address of the pin drop and where people go to find you won’t be where you’re actually at. You can go into Google. That part I do know. You can go in and fix that. And if you have a business, you should. That’s different from what we’re talking about with your home. Somebody’s searching out, you know, X, Y, Z, whatever. You want people to be able to find you and come right to you through the mapping things that are out there. Make sure that that all gets mapped correctly and they can find you because sometimes they’ll have you a block or two off. So if that’s the case, fix it. But on your home, yeah, you want to make that as discreet as possible. So check your Google Street View. Check the overall satellite view and look at all the different satellite tools that are out there because there’s more than just the two. And double check those to see what they look like and what’s visible. Now, I’m also one where if you live in a regular neighborhood, And there’s lots of traffic roaming around and so on and so forth. Depending upon what’s in your garage, you may want to leave your door shut most of the time. You’re somebody that’s got a big toolbox. You’re a whatever kind of a do-it-yourselfer. And you may have different types of tools and things even in the garage. And I get it. In the summertime, it’s hot. You want to leave the door open and so on because you get a breeze through. Just remember, whatever’s in there, people driving by can see. Do you want them seeing it is the point. You might live on a corner and they may be able to see all of your back of your house, you know, your patio and so on. What do you have out there? What looks inviting for thieves and such? These are things to think about as you’re you know trying to be more secure and hold on to your stuff so if you’re somebody that you know some of you have you know everything from wood lathes and shop equipment things like that that might be inside of your garage do you really want everybody else seeing what you have i would say for the most part Probably not. I would be more secretive along those lines, and anymore, the world that we live in, I don’t think I’d be promoting the things that you actually have inside of your garage, because typically they know, well, if you’ve got that, you may have other things inside, and I would not want to be a target in any way, shape, or form. Jeff, you’re next.
John Rush (Host) :
Hey, morning. We were talking about Google and being able to look at your property. One of the things I… I’ve noticed, I don’t think it’s unique to here because I noticed in Colorado Springs too, is that if you try to use that as a place to find your property lines, you’re going to be wrong. Absolutely. The cadastral for the state does not match up. So don’t go out there and try to say, oh, my property line is here. No, mine is probably out by 5 to 10 feet, depending on which search engine I use. You know, Zillow, Realtor.com, Google Earth.
John Rush (Host) :
Good point.
John Rush (Host) :
They all vary.
John Rush (Host) :
Great point, Jeff. Yes, don’t utilize that to know where to put fences and things along those lines and so on. You’ll be sorely mistaken because it doesn’t work very well when you do that.
John Rush (Host) :
Yeah, you can do it, but then you have to risk the consequences of litigation later.
John Rush (Host) :
Yeah, these are things when you’re talking, Jeff, surveys are the only way you’re going to know specifically where you need to be handling things along those lines. So absolutely, everything you’re talking about, spot on, absolutely.
John Rush (Host) :
Yep, that was it.
John Rush (Host) :
I appreciate that. Nope, thank you very much for that, Jeff. Yeah, if you guys are looking to build anything, do anything, fence lines, parking even, maybe you’ve got a little bit more of an acre or so and different things along those lines, you know where your property line is or you should know. And if not, do what Jeff’s talking about and make sure that you’re all dialed in when it comes to that. So, again, by the way, there’s Google Maps. There’s Apple Maps and there’s Google Earth. And just as a side note, I was just looking at my own address as Jeff was talking. You may find different images from different sources based upon when they’re downloading that satellite imagery and how often they’re, quote unquote, updating and paying for it. you will most likely, of those three sources I just mentioned, have three different images. So just food for thought, I just really quick went to Google Earth and looked at mine a moment ago, and it’s a pretty accurate depiction of what I’ve got going on, meaning I can pretty much look at this and tell you that this was probably taken, and I know some different things that I’ve changed around on my property, but this was taken last summer. I can tell you from this one that this is a last summer image. and i can tell from the way the trees are actually starting to change in this image that it’s probably last fall is when this was taken it wasn’t just the last few days this would have been last fall and i can tell by looking at the foliage and so on so point being double check what can other people see when it comes to your property Go check Google Street View as well. And that’s just in the regular Google Maps. And you can just go look at Google Street View. And I would highly recommend that you do some of these things. Again, we’re talking about the security end of things to make sure that you’ve got things, you know, dialed in as best as possible to avoid that story I was sharing earlier. And this is, again, this is the other thing that I think I’m really big on. And this is something that probably ought to make sure your kids are aware of and so on as well. Don’t tell people what you own. That’s where I know some people like to be a little bit more braggadocious on, you know, I have this and I have that. Yeah, I don’t think I do that. You know, how many guns do you own? How much art do you have? How much of this do you have? And so on. And some people really like to to make it known what they own. I think that’s a really, really bad idea. I got a text message a moment ago on the heat track snowmelt mats and. I love those. I have some of them. I’ll talk about that. Thank you, Mark. I’ll talk about that next week. For some of you, that may be something you want to look at and invest a little bit of money in. It keeps you from having to shovel. I’ll explain what those are next week. We do have some snow potentially coming in this week. In fact, as you’re listening to the replay on Tuesday, you might have already had some. We’ve got some snow coming in potentially maybe even into Monday morning. We’ll see how that all goes. Turns out here in the next couple of days, but we’ve got about three or four storms backed up coming into the state. So be aware of that and be safe. All right, guys, that’s it for today. Fix It Radio. FixItRadio.com is our website. Again, the text line 307-282-22. Have a great rest of your day. This is Fix It Radio, KLZ 560.
