Welcome to Sportsman of Colorado, Colorado’s premier outdoor radio show heard every Saturday afternoon on KLZ 560 with insights on hunting, fishing, archery, guns, and ammo from Colorado’s top outfitters featuring the industry’s leading experts on how to enhance your experience in the great outdoors. Now, here’s your host, Scott Watley.
SPEAKER 15 :
Welcome to Sportsman of Colorado. Thank you so much for joining us today. Quick reminder, you miss our live show here on Saturdays. You can catch us twice on Sundays, 8 and 8, 8 a.m., 8 p.m. Then the following Thursday at 9 a.m., again, you will hear the previous Saturday show. So, hey, four times a week you can catch Sportsman of Colorado. And, of course, you can get our podcast wherever you get yours or at sportsmanofcolorado.com as well. Well, it’s the first Saturday of the month, even though we’re already into February a few days, and that means LT Arms is in the house. Or, actually, I’m in their house. We’re coming to you live from the world headquarters here of LT Arms, 8130 Schaefer Parkway in Littleton. The normal crew… Evan Lee. How are you? Howdy, Scott. Brandon Anderson. How are you doing? And then the unnormal person here. No. Parker Wiley is with us. And Parker has been on our show before. He is a well-known gunsmith in the area and is the lead gunsmith, official gunsmith here at LT Arms. So, Parker, good to have you back. Glad to be here. So let’s, first of all, we’re going to kick off the day about the Mile High Hunt and Fish Expo. We are super, super excited to be at the brand new event center at the Western Stock Show there. So it’s the brand new event center. You can go to milehighhuntexpo.com for tickets and for information. Now, we’ve got a promo code. We work really close with Phil and Abe on the show, of course. So we’ve got a promo code for ticket discount. Put in SOCR for Sportsman of Colorado Radio, SOCR 2026. Then you will get a 10% off of your ticket purchase. Now, some people said, why are you doing a percentage and not just like $3 or $4 off a ticket? Looking back at the ticket sales the last few years, we’ve had a lot of people buy multi-day tickets. If you’re going to do that, that 10%, can mean more money to you than doing $2 or $3 off a ticket. If you just buy one ticket, it’s still going to give you like $2.50 off of a ticket, so it’ll save you a few dollars. But it’s going to be a great, great show. You’re going to hear more and more and more about it as we get closer to the date of March 20th through the 22nd. And one of the special vendors that will be there will be our friends here at LT Arms. So, Brandon, we’ll kick it off with you today. Man, it’s going to be great to have you guys out there. And you did the recent International Sportsman’s Expo. And so let’s reflect back on that a little bit and how that went.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, we had a really good time out there. We actually met a lot of new customers that have already come through the store, a lot of new people every single day. So it was nice to get out there to a wide audience that’s in our local area because we’ve gone to a few shows like out in Texas and stuff like that. And we’ll get some business, but it’s nice to have some people who are local to the shop. Yeah, you can meet and they can come over here next week. Yeah, they don’t have to travel, you know, a 10-hour plane ride. Or, you know, not 10 hours, but, you know, it’s just a nice local…
SPEAKER 04 :
local audience to actually get in touch with that’s good did you make it out there at all i did not i have to stay here and work yeah but i’m looking forward to this one i mean it just yeah as brandon says it’s just great to get the opportunity to showcase what we do here the visibility aspect of it and let people know that we’re here for them and and we got really good local options for yeah for gunsmithing work and for availability for firearms ammunition education looking forward to meeting some some people out there you know we got a pretty good variety
SPEAKER 15 :
people that like I mean there’s people that just are gun people they like any kind of gun but then there’s a lot man that if I said hey I need to sell a shotgun you could probably have 30 people you could call because you know they like shotguns you know lever action or military rifles or western stuff whatever but it’s a pretty good mix of people here in Denver as far as looking at guns isn’t it oh absolutely yeah we have we I mean we see them all in here we have guys that you know
SPEAKER 05 :
Just came in, they own a pistol and they decided to get more into it and they want to build an AR-15. Or we have guys that have, you know, five safes in their garage and they want to build the craziest, most decked out custom hunting rifle possible and paid, you know, attention to every single little detail, every screw and everything in the rifle. So yeah, we get a nice wide array of people through here that are, you know, their interests are all over the place. Some tactical guys, a lot of local hunters, African big game hunters, guys looking for stuff to take on safari. So, yeah, we get a lot of really good crowd in here, so it’s nice.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yep. And Evan, man, over the last few months, you guys have gotten in some good collections, man. Wow, yeah. Some unique collections.
SPEAKER 04 :
stuff yeah some really interesting firearms those highlights stand out in your mind oh a really interesting collection of uh of winchester 788s and odd chamberings that was fun um a lot of old west arms uh some cool single action revolvers those have been really good got some really interesting 1911s and it’s just been a really good mixture of things got some high-end shotguns we got a few things coming in next week we’re pretty excited about um looking forward to seeing that collection but yeah it’s been it’s been really good Interestingly enough, we sell a lot of new guns, don’t get me wrong, but man, the interest in vintage firearms right now is one of the highest I can recall in the last few years. People are really getting into that older stuff and wanting to fill a spot in a collection with an older World War II used firearm or an older hunting rifle. It’s been really interesting talking to those guys.
SPEAKER 15 :
If you’ve got some guns you’re not using anymore, and we say collections, it can be a couple of guns, one gun, whatever. You want to sell, you want to put on consignment, whatever the case may be. Consignment program here works well. Personal testimony, I brought three in a couple months ago, I guess, and I don’t know, I’m trying to be extremely honest here, which I always try to be, but in about 40 days, now, one of them sold in like a week, okay? Next one, another one sold in a couple weeks, and the last one sold, you know, a few weeks later. So, I mean, in about… Easily a 45, 50-day period, you know. And like I say, I’m giving some grace there. But all three of them gone. So you guys reached out and did it. So, yeah, it worked out good.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah. I mean, we’ve had a few recently. It’s crazy. They’ve been brought in, written up, photos were taken, put it on the wall. And that afternoon some guy came in and was like, oh, you have one of these? And I’m like, yeah, it’s been there about two hours. And sometimes they go real quick and sometimes they hang out a little bit longer.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, it just depends on what they are. Sure. So and I don’t know who’s best ass is. How do you work when somebody brings a gun in? You always get the guy that thinks it’s worth a bazillion dollars, you know. But I mean, how do you get them to be reasonable in the way? Because you don’t want a museum piece in here. You know, you don’t want it to be here two years. You want to sell it, too. So how are most people? Just to say, hey, what do you think I should ask for?
SPEAKER 04 :
As I always explain to them, I try to get an idea of what they think they want to get out of it first. If it’s realistic, we’ll talk about that. Ultimately, as I explain to them, it’s worth what somebody’s going to pay. We try to average it between Blue Book and recent auction prices realized through several different auction vendors and online places such as Guns International, Guns.com, Gun Broker, the usual suspects. And we usually come up with a range that’s suitable for them. And we always try to start high and get them as much as we can out of there. But we try to come up with a realistic range for what things you’re actually bringing. And they’re usually pretty comfortable with it. Sure. Sometimes it’ll be some, well, this was granddad’s and I’ve got this sort of thing. I said, well, let’s try it high and let’s see if the market will bear that. And sometimes it does. But more often than not, they want to lower the price a little bit after 30 days or so of trying that and then We always get something that they’re happy with.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right. You know, it takes a lot of time. You know, take a gun in, look at it, you know, clean it up, maybe whatever, getting photos. All the photography, the write-up, the whole thing. I mean, you have to spend some time.
SPEAKER 04 :
There’s a marketing angle to it. There really is. I mean, some guns, they deserve a nice write-up. We had a really interesting pair of A-square. Art Alfin made A-square Hannibal rifles at a custom – our customer had ordered from him back in the 90s at the safari club show and he used these to go to africa every year from his home in alaska and he’s aged out now and decided he wanted to sell this pair of rifles and being a custom job like that that he and art worked on together back in the 90s and it took some time writing that up and it’s a premium price and a premium pair of rifles with a lot of accessories took a little while to sell it but they finally went and it was it was the marketing treatment it truly was because they were that special all right again we’re
SPEAKER 15 :
At the world headquarters here of LT Arms, 8130 Schaefer Parkway in Littleton. And I want to get to Parker now. Hey, he is the gunsmith here. And Parker, how long have you been in this industry of gunsmithing?
SPEAKER 14 :
I’ve been doing this professionally for about 10 years and another 10 or 15 before that non-professionally for Uncle Sam.
SPEAKER 15 :
No. Okay. Well, we appreciate your service.
SPEAKER 14 :
What branch were you in? I was in the Army.
SPEAKER 15 :
In the Army. Okay. When you look back, you first got started in logistic professional there, 10 years. Second year to today, what’s changed the most in gunsmithing?
SPEAKER 14 :
I’m seeing a lot of the old stuff come back. When I first started, it was all the tactical stuff. People only wanted Cerakote. People only wanted plastic guns, which is great. I have a safe full of those. But people are wanting the more bespoke custom hunting rifles. The ELR stuff’s getting really, really huge right now. Everything old is new again.
SPEAKER 15 :
Mm-hmm. And I tell you, looking at all the different things, you guys do a great job in videos, by the way. I mean, before I even started doing business with you, I saw your videos, you know. You guys do a great job with videos. So if you’re not following LT Arms on social media, make sure you do that. You can see a lot of cool stuff they do. But what are you seeing now here at LT Arms? And you’ve been here how long?
SPEAKER 14 :
I’ve been with LT Arms about three years now. About three years. Okay.
SPEAKER 15 :
All right. And so, man, it looks like a pretty good mixture. Like we were talking, different people like different guns. But, man, I see all kinds of things walking in here when I’m here for people, for you to work on things.
SPEAKER 14 :
Oh, yeah. Just today I’ve been inside of an old World War I Maxim machine gun, getting that up and running. The current project that I’m working on is an African dangerous game gun built on a 1906 Parker Grade III shotgun action.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay. Now, for those of us that are not as smart as you, what is a Parker Grade III? What does that mean?
SPEAKER 14 :
The Parker Brothers, that was one of those Northeastern America really classic double guns for bird hunting. And they make a really lovely platform to start for a side-by-side double rifle. okay so so it was a shotgun it was a shotgun i’ve still got the original barrels i could probably still shoot them really and in your chamber and this and what this is going to be in 45 70. okay yeah it’s a 24 inch barrels made for real quick engagements real heavy hitting calibers uh that’s where all your 450 nitros your 500 nitros were developed for guns like this and it’s for it’s for a game that hunts you back yeah winner gets to eat the loser
SPEAKER 15 :
I’ve been there, and in Africa I did get a Cape Buffalo. Of course, when you’re hunting over there, when you get in a dangerous game, you have to use at least a .375, you know, as your minimum caliber, and that’s what I shot mine with. But, man, when you’re standing 75 yards from a Cape Buffalo and there are six of them standing there, son, you’re like, oh, man, don’t miss, you know. Don’t wound them because, boy, they will come after you for sure. Building guns has become huge. I mean, you know, 20 years. I never thought about building a gun. You know what I mean? I mean, that wasn’t even a thing, I don’t think, 20 years ago. But now, it’s ginormous, isn’t it?
SPEAKER 14 :
Oh, certainly. And we do offer classes here for things like ARs. If you want to learn how to put your first set of Legos together, we’re more than happy to build it out from soup to nuts with you every last pin in spring. We’ll do a sanity check with you and make sure that you’re ordering the right parts through us. Make sure that everything fits before you come here and that you know exactly how to put your gun together, how to tune it, how to maintain it. And we can go absolutely wild with our full custom bolt action builds.
SPEAKER 15 :
really okay now are those classes you just kind of as needed so once you get a few people or those scheduled throughout the month it is all one-on-one when you’re ready to build you let us know and we’ll get into it with you wow well that’s cool and you know what doing it one-on-one i mean you got 10 or 15 people there, and there’s always the guy that can put it together like you can, and another guy will sit over and go, oh, my God, which end of this points that way? And so it is nice to have that one-on-one because then they get your personal attention as well, right?
SPEAKER 14 :
Oh, certainly. And all the years of experience. In the back of the shop, we’ve got closing in on three, maybe three and a half decades of combined experience back there.
SPEAKER 15 :
That’s awesome. We are visiting with LT Arms, 8130 Schaefer Parkway in Littleton. Come see them. Don’t go anywhere. We’re just going to take a quick break and more coming back right after this.
SPEAKER 08 :

SPEAKER 15 :
Welcome back to Sportsman of Colorado. If you’re just joining us, my name is Scott Watley. We are at LT Arms, 8130 Schaefer Parkway. If you haven’t been to the store, and maybe if you were here six, eight months ago, you were across the street, right, Brandon? So if you haven’t been to the new LT Arms, let me put it that way. Get by and see them. Once again, 8130 Schaefer Parkway. If you’re just joining us, Evan is with us, Brandon, and we are talking to the gunsmith, Parker, here for this segment mostly. But I tell you what, let’s circle back to the double rifle. I want to get into your complete custom bills, but what in the world would make you think to do that?
SPEAKER 14 :
Take a shotgun and make a double rifle. Was it your idea? It was. I’ve wanted to build one of these since I was in school. A man named Ellis Brown literally wrote the book on it. He’s another Colorado gunsmith. Had he not really laid out the roadmap for me, I never would have taken this on. It’s 400 hours and counting of my life that I will never get back.
SPEAKER 06 :
Oh, jeez.
SPEAKER 14 :
But it’s turning out nice. When I have to hand this over to the customer, they’re going to need a spud bar to get it out of my hands. Yes. It is rapidly becoming one of the favorite guns I’ve ever built.
SPEAKER 15 :
So where does it start?
SPEAKER 14 :
So it starts with a good, strong, solid side-by-side shotgun action. Not everyone’s going to do the trick. It has to be a real strong action. And from there, you start off with a 7.5-pound block of 4140 steel and a couple of barrel blanks and just hours and hours on the machines and hand filing and making everything just perfect. One of the biggest challenges is getting both barrels to agree where they ought to be pointed. The regulation process is incredibly critical to this because you don’t want, you know, one barrel shooting straight and true and the other one, you know, off the next county over. It is very difficult to get the math right on that.
SPEAKER 15 :
Wow. You don’t want to pull the trigger and have two buffaloes fall. Shoot the one on the left. Boom. The one on the right goes too. And so, Evan, there’s a lot that goes into this. I mean, you’re talking about the build. And then you’re talking about, you know, what the preciseness of shooting it and getting a trigger right, getting everything right, and then getting on the range, seeing how it shoots. What all goes into it from some things you’re into?
SPEAKER 04 :
We were out there working on some other customer load projects, but Parker came along with us last week to regulate these barrels. Watching him do it was fascinating because literally it’s just moving these things either vertically or along the horizontal axis to get them to agree at a certain point of impact at a certain range. And he was moving little shims around and soldering things and clamping things together right there at the bench. It was impressive. It was really satisfying to watch a craftsman at his level get that kind of results. It was really, really neat. It’s a really cool project. I’m excited about seeing the completion of it, but I’m just hoping that we can potentially get some customers interested in doing such a thing. As you probably know, you’ve been to Africa. You can spend many, many figures, six figures on a double rifle from England or even from Germany or France or Belgium. That’s why I don’t have one. To take an American, a good, solid old American action and turn that into a double rifle at an agreeable price that you can then take and shoot in Africa, that’s an awful cool prospect.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right. So is there a market for anything if people have guns? Let’s say they just got a regular stock, whether it be type Mark V or something, and they just want some different things done to it to make it a better gun. Is there something like that, or are you just better off starting off with just like your custom builds that you guys are doing?
SPEAKER 14 :
Well, there is always room for improvement inside of any gun. Whatever you’re buying, no matter how gold-plated it is, it’s always built down to a price. And a lot of manufacturers skimp out on the bedding. That is one of the easiest ways to bring your shot groups in just a little bit tighter. We can also do custom things with the stock, custom bluing. If it’s hitting a little too hard, a little bit more recoil for some of our listeners that are a little bit more advanced in age and don’t have the… the ability to handle that 300 wind mag without a break on it anymore we can fix that we can also do things to the stock to to lessen the recoil but if what you really want is that dream gun the one that you came up with in your head and you can’t draw it you can’t put it on paper but you could tell me about it We’ve got a line of custom guns where we’ve got some jumping off points, but everything is customizable. The length of barrel, the caliber, the contour, the material of the barrel, how you want a chamber to have, what sort of sights you want on it. Do you want a big high power scope? Do you want African safari sights? Do you want wood? Do you want carbon fiber?
SPEAKER 15 :
it it there really is no limit to what we’re willing to do nothing beats having a gun in your hand that you know and trust you know there’s no worse feeling of sitting there trying to get on an animal with a scope or something you’re like i wonder where this is going to hit you know if you hadn’t shot you know and i tell you that’s a It kills me how many really experienced hunters do that sometimes. They don’t shoot their gun, you know, from last year. Oh, it was on last year. It’ll be fine. Dude, I’ve taken it, and I’m like six inches off. I’m like, what happens when that? I mean, all you did was put it in the safe, and it was on last year. How does it get off? You know what I mean?
SPEAKER 04 :
Great question. Did you drop it down the stairs when you weren’t paying attention and knock it over? I don’t know. But it can happen, can’t it? Yeah, it sure can. You’re really not doing the animal justice if you’re not going to go and check zero at least before going hunting. I don’t know how these guys go and do it with rental guns. I just can’t get my head around it. I guess if you practice a bunch and make sure you’re on before you head out to the field, I guess it would be okay. But, again, going back to the custom thing, if that’s a gun that’s built for you and it’s the way you want it and you treat it right and you’ve got it zeroed and your loads are working, nothing more satisfying than having something that just you know is going to work every time.
SPEAKER 15 :
Anytime the word custom is in something. That’s it. I mean, it’s perfect fit. Built for you. I mean, I’ve shot guns that didn’t fit me, you know, right? And there’s a lot in that and shotguns, isn’t it, Parker? We’re getting it fit right for you for length of pull, everything, right?
SPEAKER 14 :
Oh, certainly. Somebody that can do the cast off, can do the toe just right, can do your length of pull. It’s the difference between getting a men’s warehouse off the rack suit and having a professional tailor it for you.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, good analogy. And you know what? You don’t know what you don’t know until you shoot a few custom things, you know, with a better trigger, different things like that. I mean, I never knew the difference, you know, until I started shooting some different deals. And, man, a two-pound trigger feels very different than this. Off the rack, right?
SPEAKER 05 :
You can get an entry-level rifle that’s decently priced, and you can go out, and it’s accurate, and you can shoot with it, and have no problems. But, yeah, once you step it up a couple levels and start shooting with something really nice, you absolutely notice a difference.
SPEAKER 15 :
Long-range. We’ve talked about this on a couple of shows, but, man, that has gone crazy, long-range rifles, hasn’t it, Parker?
SPEAKER 14 :
Oh, absolutely. What is that one that we built, the 3378? Yeah. Yeah, we’ve got one that we built that was kind of our test bed. And that thing, by weight, it is all scope. It is a thin light barrel. It is a skeletonized light action. The stock, if you take the action out of the stock, you have to put a rock on top of it to keep it from floating off. It is just all carbon fiber and completely minimalist material. great for hiking uh up there where you where if you’re going after sheep and you’re shooting peak to peak you won’t notice it on your back all day and it is just deadly accurate and i tell you the older you get you guys aren’t there yet man that light rifle i’ll take the i’ll take the recoil because i’m not carrying you know 13 pounds up somewhere oh yeah 80 pounds of lightweight gear still weighs 80 pounds exactly and then of course um you know
SPEAKER 15 :
Just finish up the big game season, but certainly remember, hey, you need to get some good optics. You need to get it, you know, all set up. They can bring them in and get all that done. But don’t wait until the last day, you know. Don’t wait until the season’s already here. Get it over here this summer and, you know, early fall before the season starts. But you can handle all that, right?
SPEAKER 14 :
Oh, certainly. And now’s the time. If you were out there in the weather and you were just happy to get back in where it’s warm and dry and you forgot to do your cleaning regimen on your gun, do it now. Bring it in. Have us do it. Don’t be that guy that comes in like, oh, I’ve got a rusty chamber and the bluing’s blown. I need to repolish and blue it. I need it re-cerakoted. I need the chamber cleaned out and repolished. And I need a trigger and I need the thing bedded because it wasn’t that accurate. No rush. I won’t be back until Tuesday. Our work line gets to be two, three months long sometimes, right up to hunting season. So now’s the time to bring it in.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, for sure. Once again, if you’re just joining us, we’re at LT Arms, 8130 Schaefer Parkway. Get by and see them. And today’s show is brought to you by the Colorado Wildlife Council, and we want to thank them. And once again, you’ll be hearing more about them throughout these next several months as well. The CPW thing coming up in August where they’re supposedly going to be training over the training of all this stuff. Dude, this is going to be such a nightmare.
SPEAKER 05 :
Thoughts? I think it’s going to create a bunch of panic buying through the beginning of the summer. And then…
SPEAKER 15 :
And for those who don’t know, explain what that’s for, detachable magazine type deal.
SPEAKER 05 :
For, yeah, SB 25003, the new law, the detachable magazine gas-operated gun. It’s basically attacking ARs. It says it isn’t, but when you look at the fine print of the law, it’s ARs. And they say, well, there’s pistols, too. And I’m like, well, yeah, it’s short-barreled AR pistols. There’s AR pistols, but yeah, it’s… It’s basically making it a pay-to-play system. So, you know, you can still get them. You just have to jump through a bunch of hoops and go get… It’s almost like getting a hunting license, but you have to get your AR-15 license. So, yeah, it’s going to cause panic buying amongst all the regular people. And then it’s pretty much going to price a lot of people out. And it’s only going to make it accessible to people who want to pay a little bit of money and spend a bunch of time in a class. Right. I don’t see how the CPW is even going to man these classes or handle this system because they’re stretched pretty thin already. Sure.
SPEAKER 15 :
I mean, I think I was telling you. Well, you and I have talked about it. I had some friends that had to drive the Western Slope just to get their kids, you know, certified and everything to get their license and all. I mean, just for hunter safety training. I mean, you can’t even find a class locally for that.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah. And like we talked about, we’re considering maybe doing something like that. But the unfortunate thing with the whole SB25 situation is that you can’t… Like a gun shop person who does concealed carry classes and things like that, they can’t go register to teach these classes. It has to be actually through CPW. So they’re kind of limiting the ability to spread that out amongst capable people and make it more accessible.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right. Right. And Evan, I want to wrap up with you here, but man, you built some great loads for me over the last year and things. And so tell people a little bit about what you do as far as helping them out and making some good loads for them.
SPEAKER 04 :
We offer reloading classes here for those that want to get into it. We also offer custom loading projects for customer rifles. If they don’t want to do it themselves, we’ll do it for them. using the bullets they want to use, and get a really good, accurate, reliable, repeatable load for them, we can do that. And again, if they want to learn how to do it themselves, we’re happy to teach them at the bench and take a reloading class with us, and we’ll get you started, and we can… pretty much uh fulfilling your wishes with that as well yeah we try to be we try to cover all the bases here for all the firearm sports as much as we can but you know we have a hunting focus of course because as like yourself that’s really what we’re into but we find uh being able to offer all these different things it really helps the customer base explore all the different options they have in this wonderful world of firearms i’d say overall as a store you guys don’t sit still long man i mean
SPEAKER 15 :
Every time I come in here, y’all are doing something different. But it shows, you know, I think, one, you’re listening to customers. You’re looking for need. You know, for years I was Jake Jabs, corporate sales manager at American Furniture. And Jake always had a saying, find a need, fill that need, and you’ll be successful. That’s what he always used to say. And you guys are, man, always finding needs and filling the need. And, man, just growing and growing. Yeah, we have five new side quests a week. That’s awesome. Hey, you need a custom cowboy hat?
SPEAKER 05 :
Come on over to LT Arms.
SPEAKER 15 :
They can get you fixed up. Seriously, great staff over here. Super, super knowledgeable. If you’ve been in some stores lately and you’re like, wow, tried to ask a few questions, didn’t get anywhere, come on over to LT Arms, 8130 Schaefer Parkway. When you come in, let them know you’re here on Sportsman Colorado, and we’d appreciate that as well. Just to wrap up, Mile High Hunt and Fish Expo, once again, go to milehighhuntexpo.com. It is March 20th through the 22nd at the new event center at the Western Stock Show area there. And put in the promo code SOCR2026. That’ll save you 10% off of your ticket purchase. and more to come on that in the coming weeks. So, guys, appreciate it. Thank you, Scott.
SPEAKER 14 :
Thank you, Parker.
SPEAKER 15 :
Thanks for stepping out of your area there from the gunsmithing area. Good to see you again, Scott. Thank you. All right. You’re listening to Sports from Colorado. We’ve got to hit another quick break. We’ll be back with more right after this. SPEAKER 03 :
Here’s why you need personal injury attorney Kevin Flesch on your side. He understands the way the jury thinks. In the context of a personal injury case, you’ve been hurt by someone else’s negligence. The idea is that you’re going to try to recover so that you can get back to where you were just prior to that incident occurring. What that really means from a jurist’s perspective is that you’re going to be asking them to award you money. So when we talk about fairness, we’re talking about six people that you don’t know. Those six people view the evidence and make a unanimous decision that will decide what the fair value is. When you’re the one who’s hurt, you have a good idea of what you think it’s worth. The question is, can you persuade those other individuals whom you don’t know and were witnesses to believe that’s what the case is worth? Kevin Flesch understands the way the jury thinks. Here’s your Water Talk Minute with Paul the Waterman, brought to you by Water Pros.
SPEAKER 01 :
So, one of the things that we’ve learned, and you can check this out factually information for yourself by going to theepa.gov. The EPA has a laundry list of unregulated contaminants. And what that means, folks, is that your municipality does not have to test for these contaminants, and so they’re not reported in your annual water quality report. This is something that has to change. We have a false sense of security about the quality of our drinking water, from pharmaceuticals to the levels of PFAS and Gen X chemicals, which was recently removed from the EPA contamination list. And for example, there’s a contaminant on the unregulated list called 1,4-Dioxin. 1,4-Dioxin has been in our water supply since the early 1900s. Check out my podcast on Spotify, Paul the Waterman, or waterpros.net.

SPEAKER 09 :
You’re listening to 560-KLZ, your home station.
SPEAKER 15 :
Welcome back to Sportsman of Colorado. Again, just a quick reminder now, you missed our show here on Saturdays, 1 to 2. You can catch us twice on Sundays. That’s 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Then the following Thursday at 9 a.m., you can catch a replay of the previous Saturday show. And, of course, you can get our podcast wherever you get yours and at sportsmanofcolorado.com. Well, always good to have our buddy Tim Christopherson with us. It is Shoot Indoors, and Shoot Indoors Buckley is the store closest to us here. And, hey, they’re our exclusive range that we promote here on the show. Just do a great job. Hear so many great things about the range and all the different classes and things. So, Tim, welcome, man. Hey, it’s good to be here. 2026, man. Here we are.
SPEAKER 07 :
Now, when did you get involved with Shoot Indoors? What year? So I got involved with Shoot Indoors in 2013. Okay. Their original location up in Broomfield. I was one of their managers there for several years. And 2020 is when I opened my own location, the Buckley location here in Aurora. That’s cool. It’s been a while.
SPEAKER 15 :
That’s the same year I started Sportsman of Colorado. Our first show was January of 2013, and the first Saturday in January there. And so, hey, first Saturday. when I started too, so good deal.
SPEAKER 07 :
Coming on, yeah, 13 years here, so.
SPEAKER 15 :
Well, I tell you, like I say, man, you know, I bump into people, people see my truck, and they go, oh, that’s your show and everything. We wrapped up the International Sportsman’s Expo, and people were stopping by, and I probably had a half a dozen people mention the range, you know, that said that they shoot over there and everything, and, you know, have been members and like the other locations, and when they’re all around, just you guys got some good locations around. We’ll get to those here in a minute as well, but I was looking at your social media, and I saw a post there at the first of February. You guys are doing a really cool promotion right now.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
And I think it’s called Test Your Aim.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yep, Test Your Aim. So we sell you a target, and it’s a skills-based entry program. So based on how you shoot your target is how many entries you get to win a gun. And we do that every month, and this might be the – most exclusive one we’ve had so far. We’ve got a Glock Gen 6, Glock 17 that we’re giving away. So get it at Aurora before you can buy one. They’re hard to get your hands on.
SPEAKER 15 :
It’s got to be more than just hitting the target then. So what are you looking at? Like hole in hole or what are you looking at?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, so with a pistol, you’re shooting at 21 feet, and you’re shooting at four different targets, and you shoot 25 rounds. So based on how many of the targets you hit out of 25 rounds is how many entries you get, either one, two, or three tickets into the entry. Wow, that’s cool.
SPEAKER 15 :
Man, what a giveaway.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, it’s a big one this month. And we also include some range gear for you. You get some ammunition to take home, gun cleaning kit. So we’ve got some really good sponsors with that as well that put a really nice package together. Wow, that’s super cool.
SPEAKER 15 :
Now, your address is 1310 South Abilene.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yep, 1310 South Abilene. So just off of 225 in Mississippi, basically. Right, right.
SPEAKER 15 :
And your hours, I’m always astounded, man. You’re there for the convenience of your customers, so give us your hours you’re open.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, we’re open when anybody can come in, hopefully. Monday through Friday, actually Monday through Thursday, we’re open 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Friday is 10 a.m. until 9 p.m., and then Saturday, Sunday, we are open 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. So try to accommodate as many work schedules as we can, and we’re open when the other guys aren’t.
SPEAKER 15 :
And what’s so cool about you’re small enough yet big enough to do what I’m about to say here. I mean, man, all through the years here we’ve been doing this, I mean, I’ve seen from bachelor, bachelorette parties. I’ve seen company functions. I mean, just about anything anybody wants to put together, they can get with you guys and you can tailor something for them, whatever they want to do, right?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, absolutely. We do birthday parties as well. So a lot of people reach out for birthdays for significant others or whoever. But, yeah, if you reach out to us, we can usually accommodate groups of any size. With the number of lanes we have, we can really accommodate. We’ve done after-hours events for people if they want to come in before or after hours, we do that. We work with a lot of security companies as well. Security companies are always training their officers. So we work with security companies coming in as early as 6 a.m. sometimes. So yeah, we really try to help the community and help who we can.
SPEAKER 15 :
Is there anything you don’t allow to be shot?
SPEAKER 07 :
at shoot indoors buckley any type caliber or type gun you know the only thing we don’t allow is 50 bmg now we are rated for it however i don’t want to uh test the limits of our equipment right and uh also uh shotgun anything with birdshot or bb shot so shotgun with slugs or buckshot is okay and all handgun calibers are okay and kind of explain your target system you know what you have in each bay for people sending the targets down and kind of explain your system Yeah, so it’s a super intuitive system. It’s as easy as using your phone. It’s a touchscreen, so you set your distance, tape your target up, and watch it go downrange.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, and it’s super easy. I don’t know if they taught it. I have a young lady that’s Dr. Melissa Fling, Custom Ear Solutions. She makes custom ear protection.
SPEAKER 06 :
Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
And so she had never been in a range, so I brought her over there. But it was super intuitive, you know, to just…
SPEAKER 07 :
First time in. And somebody in that industry should understand. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
She really did. Matter of fact, she wants to get with you and maybe come over and set up sometime and do some things for you. It’s custom air solutions. But, again, Tim Christopherson is with us at Shoot Indoors Buckley, 1310 South Abilene. GoShootIndoors.com is the website. And follow them on social media. They do a great job on social media as well. But if you’ve been looking for a range and maybe it’s been a while since you’ve Been doing some shooting, but if you’re looking for just a great place, friendly staff, highly recommend shoot indoors Buckley. Now, training. Wow, a lot of changes going on and probably more to come. Man, we are in just a fight of our lives here for a lot of gun stuff. We’ll just say it like that. But training, let’s talk a little bit about that and what you guys offer, and then we’ll give some advice for those that maybe have their concealed carry and expiring dates and things like that.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, so we have a ton of classroom space and a ton of classes going on frequently. We go everything from our free firearm safety class, which is no obligation to us other than coming in and sitting in our classroom for an hour to get a basic block of instruction on firearm safety, firearms operation. We do have our intro to pistol class as well, which does include some range time. And then we’re also running renewal courses and full-on CCW courses for anybody that needs a renewal, which is now required to our class that we teach. And then the eight-hour CCW class, which both of those include the range time as well. So if you need to either obtain your first CCW or renew that existing permit, we can help facilitate that for you.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right. Now that free firearm safety, I want to talk about that because I tell a lot of people about that because sometimes you talk to people, oh, do you got to shoot or have a gun? Oh, no, we can never have a gun in our house. And I’m like, man, go over there and check out that class. Because a lot of them, they just don’t know about things.
SPEAKER 07 :
And that’s really why we do it. And we’ve done that since our inception, Scott, back in 2013. We run this free course a few times a month. And it’s really just to provide a community service. We’re doing that for the community and giving everybody the opportunity to, like I said, no obligation. come in, sit through our class, and let us know how we did. Right.
SPEAKER 15 :
And do you recommend that people have, like teenagers, bring them to where they can hear some of it too?
SPEAKER 07 :
Absolutely. And we don’t need to be teenagers. I mean, kids can sit through that class, and it’s basic firearm safety, and that’s huge. If you have firearms in the home, you know, there’s Colorado laws that require you to lock them up and keep them out of reach and out of the wrong person’s hands. Right. We cover that in the class as well, and requirements. You’ve got a toddler versus a teenager. Those security requirements are very different.
SPEAKER 15 :
Now, let’s say your CCW card is expiring, let’s say, in June of this year. When can we, when are we allowed to, I mean, do we have to be within a certain time of the expiration to take the renewal or?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yep, that renewal course needs to be taken within 90 days of the expiration. And then that’s when you can, within 90 days, you can also go in and process your renewal application as well. So you got a 90 day window from when you need to take that class and when the permit expires.
SPEAKER 15 :
And what, let’s kind of walk through what they can expect from that class.
SPEAKER 07 :
Um, so that class is going to be two hours, uh, part of it in the classroom. Uh, we’re going over, you know, updated Colorado laws for the last five years. That’s one of the state requirements. Now, uh, we’re also going to do that in two hours. Wow. Just the new ones. Yeah. That list is getting longer though. It appears, but, uh, yeah. So two hours, uh, You know, we go over Colorado laws. We go over, again, basic firearm safety as we do in all of our classes. And then we’re going to go over, you know, the shooting portion. There is a qualification required now as well. So you get to go out on the range, spend some time with the instructor as they’re walking you through the qualification as well.
SPEAKER 15 :
You know, you hate regulation stuff, but I’d be the first one to say I’m certainly not against training and some extra training. Because you know what? If you’re not careful, you’ll find yourself getting your permit and then just not really going in and shooting very much. You know, people just get busy.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, and that’s one thing we try to instill in our customers. A lot of our customers view the CCW course, the renewal course, as their last step. And in my personal opinion, I think that’s your first step. You’re getting the permit, you’re taking that responsibility, but now you need to own that responsibility and really practice and train. Because if you ever do need to use your firearm, you want to know that you’re doing it legally and following all the rules.
SPEAKER 15 :
Sure. You know, probably 15 years ago when I got mine, best I can remember, it was 30 guys in a room. That is not the case today.
SPEAKER 07 :
You see a lot of women coming in, don’t you? Yes, absolutely. You know, that’s probably the fastest growing sector in our industry is female shooters. and we try to help facilitate that any way we can as well, including our Ladies’ Day promotion. We do that all day every Thursday. Women shoot for $10, they get a free target and free gun rentals. The only other purchase they would have to make would be ammunition. Okay. And you do something for veterans too, right? Yep. Veterans always get a discount. We’ve got that discount at $18 for the range fee. That’s $7 off for our regular pricing. And that’s actually including current former military, law enforcement, firefighters, and EMTs. So first responders, we try to take care of them as well as they take care of us.
SPEAKER 15 :
All right. Now, let’s talk about for folks that have their own gun, great. But if not, they want to – and I always tell people, man, go over there and shoot before you buy a gun. You know, because you’ve got a pretty good selection. You know, there’s not too much – at other stores you don’t have. So I always say go over there and shoot and feel how it holds in your hand because so many people when it comes to, I think, concealed carry, they’ll ask friends what they carry and what they have. And, you know, it’s all right to do that, but you don’t know if that gun fits you.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, absolutely. And we are always expanding our rental fleet. We’ve got over 70 firearms now available for rent, which we grow it almost monthly, including that new Glock Gen 6. We’ve got that available to try out as well, which people have been really wanting to get their hands on that. So that’s a fun one. And, yeah, I definitely don’t want somebody buying a gun and having buyer’s remorse. So come in and try it out because gun stores have a zero return policy. So once you buy it, it’s yours unless you want to get rid of it on your own. Right.
SPEAKER 15 :
All right, let’s kind of walk through memberships a little bit and some of the different programs you have because, man, your prices are untouchable. So let’s tell them some of the prices and packages and some of the benefits there.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, so our standard membership, we actually did change our membership pricing model a little bit very recently. It’s still $40 a month if you’re paying on a monthly basis. We are, however, giving you guys a deal. If you’re paying on an annual basis, you get that for $30 a month. So $360 will cover you for range membership for a year. It includes use of our rental fleet, so you can use any of our rental guns with that membership. All access to the range, so you’re not paying a per-visit fee when you come in. And then also you’re getting really good discounts on ammunition, targets, classroom, any classes you take. So we really try to… Make that membership very valuable to our customers. All right.
SPEAKER 15 :
And then if a couple wants to join, is there deals for like a couple or is it all on individual basis?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, no, we do offer. You can add an additional member to any of our memberships for $30 a month. So if you were a couple wanting to come in on a regular basis, use that membership. It would be $70 a month on a monthly basis. All right.
SPEAKER 15 :
You know, in August, I think it is, that’s when supposedly CPW is supposed to be in charge of this training thing and all this. Man, do you see any of this working out? Well, I do.
SPEAKER 07 :
And actually, there’s a forum coming up in the next couple of weeks, I think the 19th of February. I will be sitting in that room helping.
SPEAKER 15 :
And kind of tell our audience what that’s about.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, so there’s going to be a requirement where you have to have a 12-hour class to be able to purchase a handgun. And that 12-hour class is going to hopefully be taught by verified instructors, which we are set up very well in all of the counties we operate in as far as having verified instructors. And if they’re able to teach that class, that’s the route they take. we’ll be offering those classes immediately. It’ll be a high-demand class. So we’re going to find out more information, like I said, this month and hopefully be able to start building a plan around how we’re going to help facilitate people’s ability to still purchase firearms.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah. And like I say, man, I’m all for training and stuff, but you hate to see so much of this government overreach, you know.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, it’s hard for me to be really mad at these laws because I feel like they’re just driving business to us. Well, at that point, it is good for you. But I don’t want more regulations. We’re just adapting and seeing how we can still keep this community as strong as it is and really support anybody in their wishes and what they want to do with the firearm world.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right. Again, Tim Christopherson is with us. It is Shoot Indoors Buckley, and that is his store there at 1310 South Abilene. And give us your other locations as well.
SPEAKER 07 :
So we’ve got four locations total in the Denver metro area. Our original location in Broomfield, that’s 1 Park Street, just off of Highway 36 and 120th up in Broomfield. We’ve got our location in Denver, 410 Raritan Way. That is just off of 6th Avenue and I-25. And then we’ve got our newest location, our Central Park location, at 39th and Monaco, just past the railroad tracks down there. Right, right.
SPEAKER 15 :
And I tell you, it’s relaxing for people to come in there and shoot. But it’s also needed, you know, to just come in there and shoot your farm and get to where you know that gun and where you’re confident with it. And that’s what I tell people all the time. You know, I push everybody I can, man, to you guys for your concealed carry and things. And I tell them, but you’ve got to shoot, you know, and you’ve got to carry it, and you’ve got to know how to do all that. And that’s what these classes are all about, isn’t it?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, and that goes back to what I said earlier. The classes you’re taking aren’t your end point. They’re your beginning. And we do private instruction as well. So if you feel more comfortable in a one-on-one basis, we’ve got several instructors that can help facilitate that as well. Just schedule with one of us. $125 gets you the first session is 90 minutes, 30 minutes in the classroom, 60 minutes on the range, and then it would just be 60-minute sessions after that. And sometimes there are people that like to do that. Oh, absolutely. And it’s a super valuable tool, especially with our instructors. I like to brag because I feel like we have some of the best instructors in the industry.
SPEAKER 15 :
And you have male and female instructors?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, we do have male and female instructors. Our female instructor is on a sabbatical right now. She’ll be back in a couple months. But she does some women’s only classes that were very popular. So we’re anxious to have her come back. Right, right.
SPEAKER 15 :
And, you know, again, things we hear are just about, again, friendly staff, knowledgeable staff, you know, your gun rental program. We’ve got a lot of guns to shoot there, too. But it’s, I mean, it’s everything you need and not a bunch of stuff you don’t need. So many rangers try to have all these different things. And, you know what, just give me a nice, clean place that’s safe, you know, got some guns to shoot, and, man, that’s all you need.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. Kind of the tagline that we started, you know, over a decade ago was be safe, have fun. And that’s truly what we’re out there to facilitate. And, you know, we keep it simple and we keep it fun and safe.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right. And, you know, there is always someone, and the young lady I brought there, Dr. Fling, a few months ago was talking about it. Are they in here all the time, you know, someone watching? I go, yeah, you know. And that is something that, you know, we really want to tell everybody. If you’ve never been to a range before, you don’t know what you’re doing, so to speak, there are people there to help you, make sure everybody’s safe around you, make sure you’re safe and all that.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, and that’s actually where we shine is with new shooters or new to the industry people. We have, like I said, well-trained staff. We’re going to walk you through the steps and the process, and we’re instilling safety in every step of the way. But it’s really, you know, shooters of all ability levels are welcome, and we will walk you through the process wherever your abilities are. Yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
It is Shoot Indoors Buckley. Hey, go by and see them. Let them know you heard them here on Sportsman of Colorado. We’d appreciate that as well. You can check out the website at GoShootIndoors.com. Tim, we appreciate it. Anything else we missed or you want to touch on?
SPEAKER 07 :
I don’t think so. That covers most of our business and most of how we do things. Really, it’s all about the customers.
SPEAKER 15 :
All right. Good deal. Man, we appreciate it so much. Don’t forget the Mile High Hunt and Fish Expo, March 20th through the 22nd. It’s going to be at the brand-new event center at the National Western Expo area there. And use the promo code now if you go to milehighhuntexpo.com. Put in the promo code SOCR for Sportsman of Colorado Radio, SOCR2026, and that will get you 10% off of your tickets. And, man, it’s going to be a great, great show for three days, and you’re going to hear more about that here in the coming weeks. So I want to thank all of our guests today. Thank you for being with us. Hope you have a great weekend, and we’ll talk to you next week.
