SPEAKER 04 :
Welcome to Sportsman Colorado. Thank you so much for joining us today. Hey, just a quick reminder now, if you miss our live show on Saturdays 1 to 2, you can catch us twice on Sundays, and that’s from 8 to 9 in the morning and 8 to 9 in the evening. Then also on Thursdays at 9 a.m., hey, you’ll hear a replay as well, so hopefully one of those four times you’ll be able to catch Sportsman of Colorado Radio. Well, we’ve got a new guest we’re going to kick things off with today, and if you’ve been listening to our show, Quite a while. Willie Schmidt, good buddy of mine through the years. And Willie was a great encouragement for me to start Sportsman and just really helped us a lot. And I saw Willie actually doing a video on our next product and the gentleman that we’re going to be speaking with here. And I was like, wow, that is really, really cool. And, of course, Willie’s experience in his Pure Hunting TV show for years. I said, man, I got to find that guy. And we did. Cole Daniels joins us today from Dead Nuts Outdoors. Cole, how are you?
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, I’m doing well. Thank you guys so much for having me on. How are you guys doing?
SPEAKER 04 :
We’re doing great. We’re doing great, man. So was that at the Western Hunt Expo, I believe it was, that Willie met you?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, so Willie met my dad.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, your dad, okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
My dad, Corey, yeah. So Willie and my dad have grown a relationship now over the, I’d say the last couple of months, maybe the last year. And so Willie’s out in that Bozeman area, and we live just north of Bozeman sometime of the year, and my younger brother goes and rodeos at Western, and so we’re in Montana all the time, so we get an opportunity to see Willie.
SPEAKER 04 :
um uh while we’re out there yeah he’s a great guy awesome guy absolutely absolutely a good mentor yeah oh for sure absolutely all right so um tell us how this all came about maybe a little bit background with you and your dad and stuff and your outdoor life and then how this came about for you guys to come up with these targets yeah for sure so i mean well my family were originally from northwest washington so we hunt coastal rosies and blacktails and
SPEAKER 07 :
not the most fun hunting, but that’s what we get after and do. And, uh, um, during, during COVID, this is kind of, the idea kind of came around. We were, there’s nothing else to do. We were locked in our homes. And so we got to shoot our bows every single day, hours on end. And, um, we, uh, we’re just, you know, shooting at regular block and bag targets. And, you know, it’s kind of, my family were very competitive and you get a little tired of just shooting at dots. And, I mean, I know for myself, I’ve been hunting my whole life and haven’t seen a dot on a deer or an elk telling me exactly where to shoot. And I was like, well, heck, let’s go. Me and my brother got together and we’re like, let’s go shoot. Let’s go buy one of those 3D archery targets and throw it up. And we had had some in the past and kind of had poor results and opinions on them just because they didn’t last for the price that we had spent. And my folks had a sign shop in our local community and were like, you know what? What if we just printed a picture of a deer on this corrugated plastic material and shot it. And so that’s what we did. You know, initially it was just for us. We came in here, printed one out, cut it out with, you know, a Husky box knife, drilled it into our block target and just shot the heck out of it. And it was like, it was awesome because You know, for the first time, I felt like I was truly understanding bone structure and vital areas and, you know, kind of like your no man’s land on on a real sized animal.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right.
SPEAKER 07 :
And so that was kind of how it started. And it was just for us. And we had a couple of buddies who liked them and made them some. And they’re like, well, maybe we got something here and we could, you know, be at a price point that’s affordable for most. You know, a lot of people will complain that, you know, 3D targets are a little too expensive. And so Um, that’s what we did. Um, we came in and we just kind of got better as the months and years went on, got customer feedback on, you know, making them fold down into a fraction of the size. Um, we have a hanging tab that’s, you know, on a hinge system, so it can mount directly to, you know, whether it’s a vertical or horizontal target. And, um, then the biggest thing is just the detail, in my opinion, that we’re able to, to put into it, you can see, you know, find exact hairs and, And everything’s measured out to scale. So if you’re, like, hunting a mule deer or an elk, it’s exactly, you know, the size that you’re going to be hunting, not like a three-quarter size that you’ll oftentimes see.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, no doubt. No, and I mean, since, you know, I saw Willie talking about your product, then I went on and started watching all your videos and, you know, connected with you on Facebook and Instagram, things like that, and just watching some of the videos. And, man, I mean, they are incredible. And, you know, you mentioned coming out of COVID. I can’t tell you how many… businesses with our other show we do during the week, Haystack Help Radio, and then with Sportsman. How many things great came out of that era for people just having time on their hand and creating businesses, man? That’s awesome. Congrats.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. Well, thank you. Yeah, it was pretty exciting because, you know, like I said, it was just for us. And then I went to college and I learned a couple of things and we’re like, hey, let’s really go for it. I mean, for us, it’s really about trying to make a change in the industry because I mean, I don’t know about you, but I’m on YouTube every night watching just, it could be just a random video with a thousand views. I want to see what other people are doing that’s bringing them success or failure in the field. And we oftentimes saw many outdoorsmen taking uneducated and just improper, unethical shots, essentially. And then they’d go out and post it and they just didn’t know any better. And I’ve been there too, you know, where I’ve made a poor shot or a poor choice and Wasn’t quite sure on my placement. And so to bring something that really teaches you, you know, good bone structure, good vital area with, you know, exact measurements and realistic detail, that was what we thought the industry needed.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, I fully agree with you.
SPEAKER 07 :
And so that was kind of the thought on that. How can we make a change at a price point that’s available for, you know, the majority of outdoorsmen out there? We spend thousands of dollars on our equipment, our bows, our camo, our tags, our fuel, and we just seem to be okay with shooting at dots. You know, if you’re a couple inches right or high on a dot, you’re like, well, I’m tuned and okay, but at 80 yards, it’s bigger, and now you’re shooting at the gut, you know?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. You’re right.
SPEAKER 07 :
That was a thought there, yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
For sure. Cole Daniels is our guest. Once again, it’s deadnutsoutdoors.com. So I got to ask you, all right, you guys are all sitting around the table, and you’re like, what are we going to name it? Who won that award?
SPEAKER 07 :
Kind of a crazy story, so my great-grandpa Herman, my dad’s grandpa, he would always say, that’s dead nuts, you know, about anything in life. And so that trickled down to my dad’s, you know, best man and best friend, my uncle Greg, who every time he smoked a buck, he would be like, well, Corey, that’s dead nuts. And finally it trickled down to us boys, and there’s a really funny video somewhere in our camera rolls of my younger brother Carson smoking. who’s imitating Stan Potts. And we got a video of my brother on there shooting his bow just at a dot. And he looks back at the camera and he goes in a super high-pitched nine-year-old voice, that there’s dead nuts, folks. And it was hysterical. And so it’s like, well, you know, it’s running that family, the dead nuts name. And so we’re naming the business after it.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, that’s awesome. That’s awesome. Yeah. All right, so let’s kind of walk folks through what you offer. We’re going to hit a couple of things here. You’ve got a life-size banner target, and then you get into 2D targets. So let’s talk about that life-size banner and then, you know, what species you offer there.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yep, so the life-size banner, we offer all of the species that we do as the archery target. So we got mule deer, whitetail, elk, bear. bighorn sheep, and the next couple weeks is going to be huge for us because we’re getting so many more animals out in the month of July and August. We’ll have caribou, moose. We’ll have pronghorn. I mean, pretty much any western big game animal you can think of, we’re going to have on the banner side and the archery target side in the next two months. We’re really pushing that. Right now, it’s just You know, I’d say you’re more common Western big game, your mule deer, your white tail, your elk, your black bear. And then we do have a ranch target on there as well on the banner side.
SPEAKER 04 :
And what is that made of?
SPEAKER 07 :
So it’s made out of like just like any type of banner material that you might see hanging out around town with like a, you know, like a billboard almost, you know, big lettering. And so it’s made out of that. like that banner material and the reason it’s that the banners are made out of that is it extremely you can you can fold it up it’s like very very small roll it up and put it away but then it’s also really good in weather so like if wind hits it it’s not going to like damage it if sun hits it it’s not going to fade it if rain hits it it’s not going to like you know fall apart like paper um and so it’s it honestly holds up very very well and then with that said we have Just like if you’re shooting, you know, with your rifle sighting in and you shoot those little targets that flash yellow or green when you hit them.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right.
SPEAKER 07 :
And you see the hole. Well, we have stickers that you can cover up all your bullet holes on the banner target. And then an entire replacement vital area that covers from like the front folder to about the guts to cover up all your bullet holes. And so how we have that set up is we’ll roll the banner target out. And then drive two T-posts in the ground. We found that to be the best way to do it and put a gong behind the vital areas. So especially guys that are out long range shooting or, you know, for myself at my range, I have three targets, 100 to 300. And I can like get my younger cousins, you know, get comfortable in the scopes. seeing where they need to be, you know, pulling the trigger at, understanding, you know, your bullet drop or if you’re shooting long range, how much wind’s affecting your bullet, you know, on a real life-size deer or elk. And then you put that gong behind it so when you hear the gong hit, then you’re like, all right, I’m in the vital area.
SPEAKER 04 :
Wow, that’s cool. Once again, if you’re just joining us, Cole Daniels is with us. It’s deadnutsoutdoors.com, and they’ve got a great website. It’ll explain all the things that we’re talking about here, and I was just on there this morning, Cole, and so you can put in your email and phone number and everything, and you’re offering a little discount there, I believe.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yep, that’s another thing is we offer a 10% discount to people who give their email and then their phone number is optional as well. Kind of the biggest thing on that is we’re always doing sales. I look at the QU approach and heck, they’re always doing these amazing sales and we’re like, well, let’s get to that too where we can get the people who are you know, supporting us and true to us and following us, you know, better prices than everybody else, you know, why not? And keep them kind of up to date with what we’re doing on new releases, new product releases, new target releases. We’re going to be filming an entire hunting show episode. This will be our first year doing a season. filmed, and so that will be updated on that as well on the email and text messages.
SPEAKER 04 :
Cole, don’t go anywhere. We’re going to take a quick break. We’re going to be back with Dead Nuts Outdoors. We’re going to be talking about their 2D targets. They’ve got the replacement vital zones, and Cole will tell us all about that. You’re listening to Sports from Colorado Radio. We’ll be back with more right after this.
SPEAKER 11 :
Here’s why you need personal injury attorney Kevin Flesch on your side. He understands the way the jury thinks. In the context of a personal injury case, you’ve been hurt by someone else’s negligence. The idea is that you’re going to try to recover so that you can get back to where you were just prior to that incident occurring. What that really means from a jurist’s perspective is that you’re going to be asking them to award you money. So when we talk about fairness, we’re talking about six people that you don’t know. Those six people view the evidence and make a unanimous decision that will decide what the fair value is. When you’re the one who’s hurt, you have a good idea of what you think it’s worth. The question is, can you persuade those other individuals whom you don’t know and were witnesses to believe that’s what the case is worth? Kevin Flesch understands the way the jury thinks. It’s Colorado’s premier outdoorsman event April 11th through the 13th. Get tickets now at milehighhuntexpo.com. KLZ 560, your home station. Welcome back to Sportsman of Colorado. Well, it is that time of year. Hey, all of our archery folks, hopefully you’re already out making sure your bows are tuned up and getting some practice in. And we have Cole Daniels with us. It is deadnutsoutdoors.com. And if you missed my opening, I certainly want to give Willie Schmidt a big thank you for doing a video on this and their products. And man, really caught my eye. And the more I researched it, I had to reach out to Cole and Try to get them on the show because I think this is a winning thing here you just got to have. I mean, it’s so easy. And, Cole, you know, every time you go out to maybe shoot guns and you’ve got to carry all this stuff with you and you go out to shoot a bow and you’ve got to carry these block targets, all these different things. And, man, just what you have makes it so much easier when you’re just ready to get out and do some practicing with your bow, doesn’t it?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, that’s kind of the biggest thing is like it’s a convenient thing. With our archery targets, what we noticed was, you know, the only way you can shoot at something that’s even close to, you know, what you’re going to be hunting in the field, you have to spend a pretty penny on for a 3D target. Or you can buy, you know, an extremely cheap 3D target that just isn’t going to hold up to, you know, active outdoorsmen and hunters that are shooting every day and shooting high targets. technology equipment um and so kind of our thought process was behind that was one we sat down and we listed what are in our opinion all the problems with 3d targets the first came with price to get anything with quality you got you got to spend a lot of money um and then and then secondly it was detail and realism um and in our opinion that the 3d archery target they don’t offer a true look on your vital areas or your bone structure or what we call no man’s land especially when you’re hunting elk you know hit them high zone and so to offer something that is true to scale has extreme realistic detail so that when you’re looking through your peep it it looks like there’s a real buck or bull out in front of you was important to us because you know you get a lot of guys that get focused on shooting dots, shooting dots, shooting dots, and then when the opportunity comes in the field, we’ll have it shot at anything that looks like what they’re hunting.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, that makes sense.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, so we were like, well, we need to figure out how we can make a cost-effective archery target that can help the masses out there, the mass amount of archery hunters in our industry. And so we got together, and we did just that. And so our archery targets are made out of corrugated plastic material, so they hold up very well in the wind, the rain, the snow, and then they don’t fade out in the sun. They all have a very cheap replacement vital area. So after you shoot out your vital area, instead of having to go find $100 foam, you can just purchase the vital area on our website. They’re $20, and we’re always throwing out discounts for us. 50% on vital areas if you give through email. So you can get those for two for 10 essentially with the discount. And then also the targets fold down to a fraction of the size. And so when you’re done shooting, kind of the biggest thing is we had a couple of 3D targets and they took up a bunch of space in our garage after, you know, it comes wintertime and you put your bow away. Ours will fold up. They’re extremely small and they go right back in the box that they came in. So you can stack them in your corner and then pull them back out when you’re ready to shoot. Or then when you’re going to hunting camp, you know, not everyone has space in the bed of their truck. They want to bring their block to make sure they’re dialed in. But if you just fold ours up when we’re going from camp to camp, we throw the small box in the back and then it mounts directly to your block target at camp. Wow.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, man, you guys did well, bud. I’m telling you, to come up with all this. And I think, like I say, I know it’s going to be a winner for you guys. And so, again, congratulations on it. You know, you’re so right. I think when you get to looking at, you know, blocks and blocks and blocks and blocks and all that, and you’re not really looking at anything, and then you get out, and, man, this really gives you a chance to see exactly where you’re hitting. I mean, to me, that’s crucial because, you know, a lot of guys can say, oh, I can shoot 70 yards, I can shoot 80 yards. But there is something called your effective range, too, the way I put it, you know, of where you’re hitting that animal and where you need to hit it, which that’s what we all want to do. So, again, I think that’s a – A great, great deal for you there.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. Yeah, kind of like I was saying earlier with, you know, a lot of people get complacent with missing a couple inches left or right of the dot on the dot target, on a block target. And when you measure that from a dot to then the vital area to the front shoulder on an elk or from the vital area to the guts on any other animal, you know, it’s, I mean, especially at distance, you know, you really need to like key in on, that vital area and what I like to call the vital V just behind the front shoulder to find your most ethical and lethal shot. And so that’s kind of what we tried to make was just to offer something to outdoorsmen that will give them a true-to-scale image of the game that they’re pursuing come hunting season.
SPEAKER 04 :
Absolutely. All right, it’s deadnutsoutdoors.com. And when you go on, hey, you can put your email, you can put your phone number there, and they offer a 10% discount. And as you said, it’s just, hey, you’ve got to connect with them, connect on their social media. They do some great videos there. And to be honest, I looked up some of the reviews, and, man, all of them, Cole. I mean, people are glad to see this product because there’s nothing like it.
SPEAKER 07 :
yeah yeah that was that’s kind of the biggest thing for two for us he was like awesome you know people like him you when you first when we first started up we’re like man we hope we’re not just you know we’re not the only ones that love him you know and we’re like well i guess we’ll have to see and so we constantly like reach out i was actually talking to a guy this morning um funny enough uh he was we were going back and forth about how we could make things better and he gave me his input and and where we that better than 3d targets but what he liked about 3d targets it was awesome because my mind just got spinning on all right then we need to implement that if that’s what our customers need you know originally the vital areas were just our opinion on vital area and other people disagreed with that and so we changed our our the entire form of our vital area to fit both our opinion and other people’s opinion um because some people you know are going to shoot middle middle Some people are going to thread the needle right there at the, you know, front shoulder. Um, and so we, we made that better fit for, you know, kind of the feedback we got from our customers. Um, and so, yeah, that’s been, it’s been really cool. I love seeing all the, my favorite part of seeing the success stories last year, we had a gentleman out of Wisconsin, send us a couple of pictures and not only did he draw like a once in a lifetime elk tag in Eastern Nevada, but he also drew the once in a lifetime mule deer hunt in Eastern Nevada in the same year. And he sent us pictures, and they were just, you know, a tank bull and a tank buck. And he goes, man, this helped me so much because being from Wisconsin, you know, we don’t have the mule deer and the elk like you guys got out west. And it really gave me a visual of what I was going to be seeing for three months before the season started.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, wow. Hey, and I noticed on your website as well, man, you got a hoodie, you got some hats and T-shirts.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. Yeah, those are kind of fun. I mean, we don’t really market the hats or the t-shirts. We’re hoping to grow the social medias and then the hunting show that we’re going to be putting out this year on YouTube to where we can start to get people enjoying the brand. That’s kind of one thing I’m focusing on is really growing Dead Nuts as a brand and not just a target company. I want people to like us for us and kind of like us for our mission and what we’re trying to do in the industry and You know, at the end of the day, we’re just like everybody else. We wake up, put our pants on, and go to work. And so there’s no difference here. We go to hunting camp and have a great time and sit by the fire. And so I just want to, like, honestly just show off the brand. I love it when I see people wearing a dead nut hat at a, you know, like a Western Hunt Expo, and some guy comes up and goes, hey, man, I love your target. I got your hat here. I wear it all the time. Like, That makes me, you know, I think that really means the most. Sure.
SPEAKER 04 :
Absolutely. And, you know, here’s another cool thing, and I almost forgot to mention this, but on your 2D targets, you know, a lot of times whenever you do see some kind of target of some sort, it’s just a strictly and all broadside shot, you know? Yeah. Where you guys, you know, I’m looking at it right now, where you’ve got the 2D. the bull elk broadside, then you’ve got the elk frontal. You’ve got the whitetail broadside, you know, with the mule deer, all that. And then you’ve got your quartering away on the pronghorn, quartering away on a mule deer. And, man, that’s awesome again.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. Yeah, that’s what’s awesome about it. Like, I love the way I have my range set up is this happened to me two years ago. I was hunting mule deer in Montana. Yeah. and I had with my bow, and I shot, and I missed a buck at 40 yards. I can’t believe it happened, but it did. And it was broadside, perfect, nothing wrong, just I totally airmailed. And that buck ran up 20 yards and turned around quartering away at the top of the hill and looked back at me. It wasn’t quite sure what it was. And I was so baffled that I was like, oh, what the heck, grabbing an arrow, didn’t have one knocked, and then it ran over the edge. And I just totally blew it. And so I was like, you know what, I’m never going to let that happen again. And so the way I have my range set up is I’ll have a broadside target at 40 and then a corner away target at 60. And then I’ll throw like a pronghorn target at 80 or 70 just to get that realistic detail of shoot broadside, hurry up, knock another arrow up. Boom, shoot, shoot 60 or maybe it’s 30, 50 or however you guys are looking at it.
SPEAKER 05 :
Sure.
SPEAKER 07 :
But kind of the biggest thing for me is, you know, you talked about that frontal shot is, you know, you see, especially on the YouTube hunters, as I like to say, is a lot of people take that shot. And if you miss just by an inch or just by a hair, you’re in the shoulder and you’re not, you know, in that extremely lethal position. deadly shot area like vital area that that shot can be now i don’t really personally want to promote that shot a ton no i get it i get it yeah many people take it that if you’re going to take it you might as well understand where you need to be shooting um and so that’s why we offer that target and for me personally i won’t shoot it outside of 20 maybe 30 um but uh but we see a lot of people take that shot and if we’re gonna i just You know, kind of on my side is I don’t want to see game go to waste and get wounded and see people unsuccessful come their season. So, you know, offer them, you know, all the shots that we’re seeing.
SPEAKER 04 :
Sure. And the turkey, too. You know, that’s cool. Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. The turkey’s awesome. And we’re currently working on a decoy line. It’s probably not going to be out this year. But we’ve shot quite a few turkeys over our dead nut target since the beginning. It’s been pretty fun. The turkeys will just come running right at them. So that’s been pretty cool to see. They actually do look real, real.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, no, no, they look great here on the website. Once again, it’s deadnutsoutdoors.com. Hey, check them out. And I can tell you, and just being very transparent, I have not ordered mine yet. I’m going to. But I’m telling you, I trust Willie Schmidt. And when you look online, you’ll see why we wanted to get Cole on. Because, I mean, these are very, very realistic. And they will help you. And just simply much easier to set up and, you know, carry around. Right, Cole?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. Yeah, I’m glad you bring that up because, you know, 3D targets can get really hunky. They’re just in the way and they’re heavy. And, you know, in my experience, you get a good tricep workout pulling your arrows out of them. And so our targets, you know, they fold down to a fraction of the size and in about 15 seconds they fold out and you can set them up on, you know, any backing target, block, bale, bag. And so they mount to all of them. And, you know, I think shooting at dots is essential, especially for tuning up your bow. However, when the season comes around and you’re getting ready to go, you need to start shooting at the game you’re going to be pursuing.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right.
SPEAKER 07 :
And so this gives you a cost-effective way. You know, I really am – we’re going to start pushing our bundles because, you know, a lot of guys, they don’t just archery elk, but they’ll hunt – archery hunt mule deer elk and pronghorn or white-tail elk.
SPEAKER 04 :
No, I’m telling you, I think that would be very smart to put a package together. Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, so we have a couple of them on there, but we’re going to start doing more because, you know, essentially for the price of three of our targets, you can buy a cheaper end 3D target. And I was looking at some of those legit 3D elk targets, and the cheapest I can find is $1,800, and ours is listed at $159. And so, you know, you’re $1,500, $1,600. dollars cheaper and it doesn’t take four four weeks to deliver we deliver next day and so uh
SPEAKER 04 :
You know, I don’t have time to get into all the reviews, but just for the fun of it, I just clicked on one of the replacement parts here that you can do. And here’s just a couple of notes here. Miles S. says, real-life practice. This adds a new perception to our archery practice. Dialing in on a spot is important. Picking a spot on a live animal is another part of the puzzle to success. Here’s another one from Adam. He says, bull elk broadside kill zone. Here’s one from Brock. Almost life-size, easy setup, great for storage. Dirk says, again, the bull elk broadside kill zone is awesome. Dave Deming, love the target. And I could go on and on, but just quick little deals. But, man, people are loving it.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, yeah, and that was awesome. I’m going to pull it up right here because I’m close to my computer as well. Yeah, if you’ve got a couple there you want to… Yeah, I’d like some of our ones on our website. You know, there’s this one guy that talked about it quite a bit, and he was skeptical about… Here it is. Jason W., I appreciate your review because it meant a lot. He goes, I waited some time to do this review. Let me say at first I was very skeptical about this target, as many people are, especially when we see in our ad content comments. He goes on to say, he goes, I purchased this in August, and now it’s December. I’ve shot every 3D target there is, and for the cost, this is my new favorite. I use hay as my backstop, and it works great. The vitals hold up good and are very realistic. For $20, you can get replacement vital. 3D vitals are more expensive and hard to find. It’s a great target, and I would highly recommend it. In over 20 years of archery hunting, this is an amazing target to prepare for the season. I will be purchasing more targets from this company. I would highly recommend to anyone who’s thinking about purchasing. I’m like, wow. So, you know, you see, that’s like a thought-out, thorough… you know, review. And so that really excites us that, you know, especially you get a guy that’s got 20 years of experience, has probably shot everything out there, and, you know, he really likes them. That makes us happy.
SPEAKER 04 :
Sure. And you know what, man? I can’t think of anything better for someone just getting into archery, too. I mean, what a great way to get started and learn animals, you know?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. Yeah. So that’s, that’s really cool. My, my, uh, my nieces, they have a ball shooting it. Um, I got three little, uh, or three little cousins and then my one niece. Um, but they just have a ball. It’s so much fun watching them shoot and you know, they were all cool. maybe 20 yards because they weren’t pulling any weight. But they have a ball going out and shooting their buck, is what they like to say.
SPEAKER 04 :
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, Cole, man, we will do this again. Again, congratulations, you and your family, man. You came up with something good here, man. And you didn’t have to go on Shark Tank and raise money or something.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, that was kind of the thing. We wanted to bootstrap it and do it ourselves. We didn’t want to listen to anyone else telling us how we have to run our business and so forth. But, yeah, Scott, I really appreciate you having me on. Thanks so much for everything you do and kind of bringing awareness to the industry. That’s the same goal we have over here is just bring products, you know, to an industry that we think needs a little bit of change and at a price point affordable for most.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right, man. Well, I appreciate your time, too, and I’ll be in touch with you, and we’ll set up some more of these, and hopefully our paths will cross soon, sir.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yes, sir.
SPEAKER 04 :
Thank you again. You bet. That’s Cole Daniels, deadnutsoutdoors.com. Listen, just trust me, all right? We’ve been here a long time on the radio. I’ll never lead you astray. Go there. SPEAKER 03 :
Our favorite car dealer, Len Lyle Chevrolet.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, definitely not your typical dealership. That’s so true, Jack. No high-pressure sales tactics. They respect your time. And when you have two jobs, that’s important. You know, I’d recommend Len Lyle Chevrolet to anyone. And with their low overhead, that means… Lower prices.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, we really do have something in common.
SPEAKER 13 :
Len Lyle Chevrolet. Go east and pay the least. Chevy. Find new roads.

SPEAKER 04 :
Welcome back to Sportsman of Colorado. Again, thank you so much for joining us. Always good to have Dr. Melissa Fling with us. She is our audiologist for Sportsman of Colorado Custom Ear Solutions. Her number is 720-839-7705. Melissa, good to see you.
SPEAKER 08 :
Good to see you, too. I love being the resident audiologist here.
SPEAKER 04 :
You are. Hey, you are the official audiologist for Sportsman of Colorado, for sure. And, wow, I’m so glad, you know, I came in to see you and our paths crossed to get my hearing tested, you know, a month or so ago. And then, you know, we decided what custom… Things I needed and one was designed for me was just when I’m at the range and just doing some shooting and don’t really need to talk with anybody, just protect my ears. And before I move from that, one thing you’re suggesting, too, is not only the custom equipment. moles that you made me, but then also using the muffs around. That’s just going to be extra protection, right?
SPEAKER 08 :
Right, for indoor shooting.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, for indoor shooting.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, because with indoor shooting, the sound, you know, you’d have to tell me, but from what I know, there’s a lot of hard surfaces in there, and it’s an enclosed room, so the sound is bouncing, you know, it’s ricocheting all over the walls, which amplifies it a little bit more. So it makes an already loud sound louder.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. Yeah. And what what most of the ones that, you know, I’ll go to, they’re kind of individual cubicles, so to speak. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Maybe some wood or sometimes there’s glass, whatever paneling kind of between you and the next shooter there. And you may be shooting a lower caliber gun, but the Person next to you on either side can be shooting a large caliber. And so all of a sudden you’re sitting there. I mean, man, you know, a big gun goes off and you just weren’t ready for that, you know. And so, you know, so those actually just got today from her. And but then once I got back a couple weeks ago from you. uh these are the ones with the filters so i can use when i’m hunting and i do need to maybe converse with some guys i’m hunting with and i do you know they need to tell me something i need to tell them something i could hear them perfectly and yet when the guns went off it shut down that protection and uh it you know and it was weird wearing them because i haven’t done it you know as much as i should have through the years but i’m telling you one they were super comfortable okay two super easy to put in you know it’s got the little um Removal string. Removal string, yeah. Boy, so you know you’ve got them in right and then just easy to pull out and put back in when you’re taking a break or whatever. But, yeah, I mean, super, super nice. As I told you, I just wish I would have done this. I wish you would have crossed my path many years ago. I know. So I wouldn’t be hearing this ringing that we constantly hear because – When you look at damaging your ears, I mean, it’s not just like one time, but that progression of time. Well, one time can do it. I shouldn’t say that because one time a loud sound can do that. But we’ve said this, it’s never too late. So, hey, I’ll be 67 in May. Okay. So it’s never too late. And I’m going to do my best to never be without these, you know, with anything I do now, because You know, it’s just going to get worse, you know, with hearing and tinnitus flaring up more and all of that. And the custom thing, and we talked about this when you were on our Haystack show, but, you know, the custom ear solutions, great name, because three things. Hey, it’s custom, okay? You’re focusing on our ears, and you’re providing solutions, and so… And we talked about this, too. I mean, with your hearing test, I mean, this is all you’re really trying to, hey, let’s check your hearing and let’s find out, you know, what you need.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. Right. Pretty simply. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
And we said this, and I want to bring this up because I think a lot of people do expect if they come into an audiologist and then they figure, okay, boy, they’re going to have all kinds of hearing aids and maybe be pushed to buy something there and all that. Sure. And, again, there’s nothing wrong with that. Both of us have friends in that business, and that’s what they do, and they’re really good at it.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, it’s important and necessary.
SPEAKER 04 :
But your business model is a little different of where you just want to work with the hearing, figure out – Are there some custom mold solutions you can do to help them protect what they’ve got?
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. Yeah. My focus is on prevention, really. And then the custom part of it comes into play, which I think is fun because not all non-custom options are a good option for everybody, depending on… one what they’re using hearing protection for but two some people have the shape and size of their ear canals don’t jive well with foam ear plugs or silicone ear plugs or muffs get uncomfortable after a long time so it’s fun to kind of figure out who is a good candidate for custom based on what they need and the shape and size of their ear canal right you know a lot of people have Like with Apple AirPods, for example, a lot of people come to me curious about the molds for those because they’re exercising with them on and so their ears get sweaty or they’re running or whatever and the pods either feel loose or they fall out. So they want something that’s just going to secure it. So that kind of stuff comes up, too. So it’s not just about protection, but also customization of a product, of a mold or of your ear to make another product work better so you can use it and not have to worry about it falling out.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right, right.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
And $125 is a hearing test. Correct. Tell us what they’ll get for that.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. So it’d be consultation one. So we’d go over, you know, your health history comprehensively. Examination of the ear canals and the eardrums. a test to make sure that your eardrums are functioning properly, a pressure test, and then the in-booth testing, which will measure your hearing sensitivity, how well you can discriminate speech in quiet, and also how well you can discriminate speech in noise. And then another thing I wanted to highlight that not a lot of audiologists are doing right now is testing the extended high frequency range of hearing which we did with you so it’s standard to test hearing from low pitch a low pitch like 250 hertz up to a higher pitch like 8 000 hertz and that’s usually the cut off But we could hear up to 20,000 hertz. And that whole area from 8,000 to 20,000 is often not getting tested. It’s just completely ignored. But that’s an important part of hearing. So that’s something that I offer as well. I can test up to 18,000 hertz. That’s kind of where it stops for my equipment. But that’s a useful area because I’ve seen a lot of people that come in, young, healthy people that come in that feel like they’re not… something’s just a little off about their hearing. Mostly this happens with veterans that I see. And they have normal, beautiful hearing between 250 and 8,000 hertz, and then we go beyond that, and they’ve got this huge drop off at 14,000 hertz or something. So that’s something that wouldn’t be found unless we tested that area. So that’s something I want to highlight is that I offer that, which is important for people that are noise exposed. Doesn’t matter what you’re doing. If it’s firearms, if it’s industrial, if it’s music, That area of your hearing is likely to get damaged more, and we wouldn’t know about it until later because we don’t test beyond 8,000 hertz. So I do test beyond 8,000 hertz, and we can find damage sooner and then try to make a plan to prevent it from getting worse.
SPEAKER 04 :
Here’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to do a little special here. Shoot indoors, Buckley. Tim Christopherson, you just heard on our Sportsman of Colorado show recently. Tim and I have worked out something where we want to get you to the range, but we want to get your ears protected first. All right, so here’s what we’re going to do. If you call Melissa, make an appointment, get a hearing test, 720-839-7705. and you get some custom ear molds done, whether that just be one set or you get several, whatever she suggests for you, I would highly recommend you do because she knows what she’s doing. She’s really helped me. But we’re going to get you a $50 gift card. to shoot indoors buckley all right so just know that she knows that and we’ll have the gift card for you at the store so she won’t have it with her but she will just let me know when you come in and we will get you a 50 gift card again there’s several shoot indoors locations but it’s only good at the buckley location which is off of 225 in mississippi So close to our station here, hopefully convenient for you. We’ll get you a $50 gift card to shoot indoors Buckley. Let’s walk through a couple of your most popular models that you’re doing for people. Or you can talk about what you did for me, too. The range type, the ones with the filters, and let’s kind of walk through those for a minute.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, so I would say for shooting, there’s kind of three levels. The most basic would be the solid ear molds, which we got for you for indoor target shooting, which you would pair with ear muffs, just so double protection when you’re doing indoor shooting. And those are when you don’t really need to be aware. You don’t need to communicate or really be aware of your surroundings as much. You just need the most hearing protection that you can get. pricing, you want me to go over pricing with that? Sure, sure. Those would be $155 for the pair. Now, there is a little caveat to that that I didn’t mention before, that I charge a service fee for the ear mold impressions, and that’s $50, so $25 per ear for impressions. And something unique also that I can do is I can convert the physical impressions into digital files. So I’ll have those digital files indefinitely, and we can order— more molds off of those same impressions without having to do them each time you need a new pair of molds. Now people’s ears will change a little bit over time, so I would say if it’s been five years or more, we probably need to do new impressions. So 50 for impressions, 155 for the solid ear molds. The next level up would be filtered, which is a little higher cost because they have those filters in them. Those are great for hunting when you need to be aware of your surroundings, but you also need protection at the same time. So molds with impulse filters in them will allow that communication and then protection when there’s any kind of impulse noise, like a gunshot. Those are $205 for the pair. And then the third level up, which would be the highest level, is electronic. Those would be useful in the same situation as the impulse filters, hunting, if you need to be aware of your surroundings. But they have microphones on them, and they amplify, just like hearing aids. They’re very, very basic technology hearing aids, pretty much. And you have volume control on those. Those are beneficial for people that… might have a little bit of hearing loss too but they also want to be able to hear well and protect so it allows you to turn the volume up the microphones will shut off immediately with any impulse noise above 90 db input and they’re bluetooth capable so you can stream from your phone so you could use them like airpods but they’re custom fitted they’re rechargeable batteries in them so you don’t have to change the batteries. Those are $1,350 for the pair. So that’s more of an investment because they’re electronic and they’ll last a long time.
SPEAKER 04 :
Once again, our office is right here in Greenwood Village. Tell us about that real quick.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yes, so Greenwood Village, kind of in the Denver Tech Center area, I-25, and Bellevue, basically, is where the office is located.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, all right. Enter number 720-839-7705. So once again, if you’re just joining us, give her a call, get a hearing test. If you purchase any of those, all of those, whatever, all right? Hey, if you purchase two, I might give you another gift card. All right, but hey, we will get you a $50 gift card to shoot indoors Buckley. And get you out on the range, but certainly get your ears protected first. Now, another service you offer, because some people may know they already have this condition, I guess we’ll call it, is a problem with wax in the ears.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
So you can…
SPEAKER 08 :
We may have talked about this before, but I got this exciting new piece of equipment called the Irrigator. And it just makes flushing wax out of the ear so safe, so easy, so comfortable. I’ve used other tools in the past that just, it’s like, man, we really need something better than this.
SPEAKER 01 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
So if somebody came out with a really great piece of equipment and it’s just safe and comfortable and easy and quick to flush wax out of the ears, if that’s the best way to get it out. But, yeah, so I can offer that service to earwax removal. Right. Yeah. All right. A lot of people have that? Well, yeah, actually they do. You know, I would say most people’s ears that I look in, their ear canal is either clear or they have just a little bit of normal amount of wax. But some people, just like some people sweat more than others, some people produce more wax than others and it can get impacted and it has to be taken out regularly. So those are the people that I can help.
SPEAKER 04 :
And I would bet there have been people that… I thought they really had a hearing loss and maybe got a wax removed.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, yeah, just had a huge chunk of wax in their ear. And then it’s like, oh, my God, I can hear. And then, you know, air is flowing into your ear. You know, it just feels better when you get it out. So, yeah, that’s another important service that I can offer.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. And, you know, I always tell people, too, with kids, I mean, a lot of guys or ladies may take kids hunting and their things. Man, this is something really important for them, too. Right. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, they have got to have their ears protected. So what a way to start out when they’re young like that. is to have some custom ear protection. So, you know, hey, you spend a couple hundred bucks, 150 bucks, whatever the case is, man, to protect your children’s ears, I promise you they’re going to be very grateful to you for doing that.
SPEAKER 08 :
So important. You know, and I will say custom is not as good of an option for kids under a certain age. Because it’s changing. Their ears are growing quickly, yeah. But I have done that. Actually, I had a family come to me at the… mile high hunting fish expo okay we did custom for the for the kids and they love them but probably under the year of maybe under eight years even that’s a pretty young it’ll start to the growth of those starts to slow down a little bit there versus you know birth to but if they get that 13 14 15 good choice Yes.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. Teenage ears. Definitely. It’s pretty stable then. But yeah. And they can they can still do custom if they want. We just might have to replace them more often or we would have to replace them more often than with an adult because their ears are growing. Sure. But yeah. Or muffs. Ear muffs are fine for them, too. Right.
SPEAKER 04 :
Just make sure you’re wearing something.
SPEAKER 08 :
Make sure you’re protecting. Yeah. Bystanders, anybody, whether they’re shooting or not, if they’re near it, they need to be wearing hearing protection.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, for sure. Hey, it’s Custom Air Solutions, customairsolutions.com. Give her a call, 720-839-7705. Once again, I’ve got a couple sets of these and I’ve really enjoyed them. And I hope that you will give Melissa a call. Hey, get a $50 gift card to shoot indoors buckly when you get a hearing test. And buy now. Any of those, okay, from her will get you a $50 gift card. And her office address, I’ll give you that, is 7350 East Progress Place in Greenwood Village. Again, just right off of Bellevue there in the Denver Tech Center. So unless our time goes too quickly, but thank you for yours. Thank you. Quick reminder now, if you miss our live show on Saturdays 1 to 2, catch us twice on Sundays. That’s 8 to 9 a.m. and once again, 7 to 8 p.m. on Sunday evening. And we thank you for being with us. Hope you have a great rest of your day and a great rest of your weekend.
